Adaptive Neural Network Finite-Time Prescribed Performance Consensus Control for a Class of Second-Order Multi-Agent Systems

This research investigates the semi-global practical finite-time prescribed performance consensus control issue for a class of second-order multi-agent systems with unknown nonlinear functions. Unlike the previous finite-time control set by a finite-time performance function, we give finite-time control by constraining the terminal sliding manifold in a performance function. In addition, an adaptive neural network control scheme is designed, which simplifies the controller and avoids the chattering issue existing in traditional sliding mode control. Eventually, a novel adaptive finite-time prescribed performance consensus control strategy is designed, which ensures that all system variables are semi-globally practical finite-time stable and consensus errors of the multi-agent systems converge within the prescribed region in finite time. The effectiveness and practicality of the presented control strategy are evaluated by conducting simulation cases.

Adaptive Neural Control for a Class of Random Fractional-Order Multi-Agent Systems with Markov Jump Parameters and Full State Constraints

Based on an adaptive neural control scheme, this paper investigates the consensus problem of random Markov jump multi-agent systems with full state constraints. Each agent is described by the fractional-order random nonlinear uncertain system driven by random differential equations, where the random noise is the second-order stationary stochastic process. First, in order to deal with the unknown functions with Markov jump parameters, a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) structure is introduced to achieve approximation. Second, for the purpose of keeping the agents’ states from violating the constraint boundary, the tan-type barrier Lyapunov function is employed. By using the stochastic stability theory and adopting the backstepping technique, a novel adaptive neural control design method is presented. Furthermore, to cope with the differential explosion problem in the design course, the extended state observer (ESO) is developed instead of neural network (NN) approximation or command filtering techniques. Finally, the exponentially noise-to-state stability in the mean square is analyzed rigorously by the Lyapunov method, which guarantees the consensus of the considered multi-agent systems and all the agents’ outputs are bounded in probability. Two simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the suggested control strategy.

Adaptive neural predefined-time hierarchical sliding mode control of switched under-actuated nonlinear systems subject to bouc-wen hysteresis

For switched under-actuated systems subject to bouc-wen hysteresis, an adaptive neural predefined-time control scheme is presented first time in this paper. To improve the robustness and response rate of the system under consideration, a hierarchical sliding mode control technique is introduced. Based on a predefined-time stability criterion, the stabilization time of the system can be directly preset under the designed controller. Besides, the convergence time depends only on the preset value and is independent of all other parameters. The projection algorithm is introduced to avoid the singularity problem in the controller design process. Meanwhile, it is proved that all signals of the closed-loop system are bounded after a preset time through the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, a simulation example and a comparison example are given to further illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of developed control approach.

Adaptive disturbance rejection neural output feedback control of hydraulic manipulator systems

This paper proposes an adaptive disturbance rejection neural output feedback control (ADRNC) scheme for multi-degree-of-freedom (n-DOF) hydraulic manipulator systems, subjected to unknown nonlinearities, external disturbances and unmeasured system states. The controller design is formulated by integrating Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNNs) with state and disturbance observers using the backstepping method. The RBFNNs are synthesized to handle unknown nonlinear functions and the residual estimate error, coupled with external disturbances, is estimated through the combination of state observer and disturbance observer. The unique features of the proposed controller lies in its capability to estimate both matched and unmatched lumped disturbances. The auxiliary disturbance estimation law is guided by the neural learning weights and estimated system states provided by state observers. By effectively utilizing neural networks to approximate and mitigate most nonlinear uncertainties, the workload of the disturbance observer is substantially reduced. High-gain feedback is therefore avoided and improved tracking performance can be expected. Moreover, to avoid the tedious analysis and the problem of “explosion of complexity” in the conventional backstepping method, we employ a first-order sliding-mode differentiator. Rigorous analysis via Lyapunov methods establishes the stability of the entire closed-loop system, ensuring guaranteed and satisfactory tracking performance under the integrated influence of unknown nonlinearities, unmeasured states, and external disturbances. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the nested control strategy.

Adaptive Online Neural Predictive Control of Hydraulic Actuator Using FPGA Acceleration

Hydraulic actuators have recently been widely used in control systems as efficient output devices. However, high-precision control of hydraulic actuators in industrial applications remains challenging due to the conflict between controllers' complexity, especially in theoretical modeling, and their generalization abilities, including adaptability to parametric uncertainties and versatility for various working conditions. To address this issue, we propose an adaptive online neural predictive control (AONPC) scheme, which is capable of handling unmodeled nonlinearities and uncertainties with a simple structure and low demand for system modeling. Specifically, an artificial neural network (ANN) is responsible for data-driven system identification and predictive control, while upper confidence bound (UCB) algorithm is introduced for hyperparameter self-adaptation. The ANN structure and the iteration number for solving the optimization problem are determined through a simulation study. Then, to complete the whole control loop within a short and fixed tracking interval, the proposed controller is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA), which can effectively improve the tracking precision. Finally, extensive experimental results on a realistic hydraulic actuator device demonstrate the superiority of the proposed controller.

Command filter-based event-triggered control for stochastic MEMS gyroscopes with finite-time prescribed performance

This paper proposes an adaptive neural control strategy for stochastic microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscopes, aiming to achieve a prescribed performance in a finite time. The radial basis function neural network is introduced to address the system’s unknown nonlinear dynamics and stochastic disturbances. Then, the technology of finite-time prescribed performance function, along with the method of command-filtered backstepping design, is utilized to ensure both transient and steady-state performance and simultaneously solve the problem of "explosion of complexity." Moreover, a switching threshold event-triggered control law is proposed to cut down on communication resources and eliminate corresponding parametric inequality restrictions. The proposed adaptive state feedback control strategy is able to guarantee that the output tracking error converges to a prescribed, arbitrarily small residual set. Additionally, the closed-loop system’s signals can be semi-globally ultimately uniformly bounded in probability. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed strategy.

A novel adaptive neural predefined time control for a class of nonlinear systems

AbstractIn this article, a novel adaptive neural predefined time control scheme is designed for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems. In the design procedure, the unknown smooth nonlinear functions are approximated by the neural networks (NNs). A neural adaptive predefined time controller is proposed based on NNs, adaptive backstepping technology, and predefined time stability theory. The designed control strategy includes a new adaptive updating law which ensures that the derivative of the Lyapunov function satisfies the predefined time stable form. The proposed control scheme ensures that all the signals in the closed‐loop system are predefined time stability. A practical simulation example validates the effectiveness of the designed controller.

Event-Triggered Adaptive Neural Impedance Control of Robotic Systems.

This article presents an event-triggered adaptive neural impedance control (ETANIC) scheme for robotic systems, where the combination of impedance control (IC) and event-triggered mechanism can significantly reduce the computational burden and the communication cost under the premise of ensuring the stability and tracking performances of the robotic systems. The IC is used to achieve the compliant behavior of the robotic systems in response to the environment. The uncertainties of the robotic systems are estimated by the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), and the update laws for RBFNN are derived from the designed Lyapunov function. The stability of the whole closed-loop control system is analyzed by the Lyapunov theory, and the event-triggered conditions are designed to avoid the Zeno behavior. The numerical simulation and experimental tests demonstrate that the proposed ETANIC scheme can achieve better efficiency for controlling the robotic systems to perform the interaction tasks with the environment in comparison to the adaptive neural IC (ANIC).

Adaptive Neural Cooperative Control of Multirobot Systems With Input Quantization.

This article develops the adaptive neural cooperative control scheme for a group of mobile robots with a limited sensing range in presence of input quantization by a dynamic surface control technique. First, to make the controller design feasible, the original robotic system is transformed into a new fully actuated system using a transverse function. Then, taking into consideration the effects of a hysteresis quantizer, an adaptive neural cooperative controller is developed based on the universal approximation property of the radial basis function neural networks and the connectivity preservation strategy. Furthermore, the proposed control scheme can guarantee that all closed-loop signals are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded. Meanwhile, desired constraints are not breached and tracking errors are within the predefined domains. Finally, several simulation results are carried out to testify the feasibility and efficiency of the theoretical findings revealed in this article.

Adaptive Neural Control of Constrained MIMO Nonlinear Systems With Asymmetric Input Saturation and Dead Zone.

In this article, the adaptive neural control is studied for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems with asymmetric input saturation, dead zone, and full state-function constraints. A suitable transformation is introduced to overcome the dead zone and saturation nonlinearity, and radial basis function (RBF) neural networks (NNs) are used to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions. What is more, we apply the Nussbaum function and time-varying barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) to deal with the unknown control gains and full state-function constraints, respectively. Based on the backstepping method, a universal adaptive neural control scheme is presented such that not only the state-function constraints of the closed-loop system cannot be violated and all signals of the closed-loop systems are bounded, but also the tracking error converges to a small neighborhood containing the origin. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by an application to the mass-spring-damper system and a numerical example.

Adaptive neural output-feedback control for nonstrict-feedback stochastic nonlinear time-delay systems with hysteresis

This paper proposes an adaptive neural outputfeedback controller for a class of nonstrict-feedback stochastic nonlinear time-delay systems with unknown backlash-like hysteresis. First, a state observer is established for estimating the unmeasured states. Second, an appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional is used to compensate the unknown time-delay terms, and the neural network is employed to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions. At last, an output-feedback adaptive neural control scheme is constructed by using Lyapunov stability theory and backstepping technique. It is shown that the designed neural controller can ensure that all the signals in the closed-loop system are 4-Moment (or 2 Moment) semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) and the tracking error converges to a small neighborhood of the origin. Two examples are presented to further show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Dynamic learning from adaptive neural control for full-state constrained strict-feedback nonlinear systems

This study focuses on the learning and control issues of strict-feedback systems with full-state constraints. To achieve learning capability under constraints, transformation mapping is utilized to convert the original system with full-state constraints into a quasi-pure-feedback unconstrained system. Utilizing the system transformation technique, only a single neural network (NN) is required to identify the unknown dynamics within the transformed system. Combining the dynamic surface control design, a novel adaptive neural control scheme is developed to ensure that all closed-loop signals are uniformly bounded, and every system state remains within the predefined constraint range. In addition, the precise convergence of NN weights is further transformed into an exponential stability problem for a category of linear time-varying systems under persistent excitation conditions. Subsequently, the converged NN weights are efficiently stored and utilized to create a learning controller to achieve better control performance while abiding by the full-state constraints. The viability of this control strategy is demonstrated via simulations.

Adaptive-Neuro-Learning Tracking Control for the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Full-State Prescribed Performances and Time Delays

High-performance tracking control is essential for permanent magnet synchronous motors in the perturbed environment. Given this, a new hybrid controller is proposed in this study for a permanent magnet synchronous motor with load disturbances as well as time delays. First, a new prescribed performance method is proposed to achieve the full-state performance constraints with load disturbances. Second, a time-varying filter is proposed for the first time to avoid the “complexity explosion” problem of the backstepping method while guaranteeing the convergence of the filtering error. Third, by combining Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals with adaptive neural networks, the time-delay disturbance and unknown nonlinear dynamics of the control system have been solved. The stability analysis proves that all signals in the closed-loop system are bounded. To show the effectiveness of the intelligent controller, the comparison simulations are given to confirm the advantages of the proposed adaptive neural control scheme.

Motion-Tracking Control of Mobile Manipulation Robotic Systems Using Artificial Neural Networks for Manufacturing Applications

Robotic systems have experienced exponential growth in their utilization for manufacturing applications over recent decades. Control systems responsible for executing desired robot motion planning face increasingly stringent performance requirements. These demands encompass high precision, efficiency, stability, robustness, ease of use, and simplicity of the user interface. Furthermore, diverse modern manufacturing applications primarily employ robotic systems within disturbed operating scenarios. This paper presents a novel neural motion-tracking control scheme for mobile manipulation robotic systems. Dynamic position output error feedback and B–Spline artificial neural networks are integrated in the design process of the introduced adaptive robust control strategy to perform efficient and robust tracking of motion-planning trajectories in robotic systems. Integration of artificial neural networks demonstrates performance improvements in the control scheme while effectively addressing common issues encountered in manufacturing environments. Parametric uncertainty, unmodeled dynamics, and unknown disturbance torque terms represent some adverse influences to be compensated for by the robust control scheme. Several case studies prove the robustness of the adaptive neural control scheme in highly coupled nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom mobile manipulation robotic systems. Case studies provide valuable insights and validate the efficacy of the proposed adaptive multivariable control scheme in manufacturing applications.

Adaptive Neural Trajectory Tracking Control for n-DOF Robotic Manipulators With State Constraints

This paper proposes an adaptive neural trajectory tracking control scheme for n-DOF robotic manipulators subjected to parameter variations, unknown functions, and time-varying external disturbances. First, the computed torque control (CTC) method is designed to reduce the system's nonlinearity. Second, radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) are constructed to approximate the uncertainties due to parameter variations and unknown functions. It's also important to note that the RBFNN's centers and widths are defined by state constraints. As a result of the nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO), the RBFNNs' approximation errors and disturbances are estimated to further improve tracking performance. The barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) ensures the closed-loop system's stability, guaranteeing tracking performance while preventing state constraint violation. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis provides a ranking of the importance of design parameters in influencing dynamic responses. Finally, simulations on a 7-DOF robotic manipulator are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Prescribed Fixed-Time Adaptive Neural Control for Manipulators with Uncertain Dynamics and Actuator Failures

In this paper, a fixed-time adaptive neural control scheme is proposed to solve the prescribed tracking problem of robot manipulators in the presence of uncertain dynamics, and stuck-type actuator failures which are unknown in time, pattern, and values. Technically, the combination of neural networks and adaptive control is used to handle the uncertainties in system dynamics, an adaptive compensation mechanism is designed to accommodate the failures occurring in actuators, and also a systematic design procedure based on the prescribed performance bounds is presented to establish the conditional inequality for ensuring fixed-time stability. With our scheme, it can be proved rigorously that the tracking errors in joint space can always be kept within the prescribed bounds, and converge to a small region of zero in a bounded settling time, in addition to the closed-loop signal boundedness. The proposed scheme is validated through simulations.

Adaptive neural control for non-strict feedback stochastic nonlinear systems with input delay

In this paper, the problem of adaptive control is investigated for a class of non-strict feedback stochastic nonlinear systems with input delay. First, the effect of the input delay is eliminated by constructing an appropriate auxiliary system with the same order as the considered system. Then, with the help of the backstepping technique and the structural characteristics of the radial basis function (RBF) neural network (NN), an adaptive neural control scheme is extended to non-strict feedback stochastic nonlinear systems with input delay, in which uncertain nonlinear functions are approximated by RBF NN. Furthermore, the proposed adaptive controller ensures that all the closed-loop signals remain bounded in probability. Finally, two examples are provided to confirm the effectiveness of the designed strategy.

Adaptive Artificial Neural Network-Based Control Through Attracting-Manifold Design and Lipschitz Constant Projection

Abstract This article presents an adaptive artificial neural network-based control scheme that strategically integrates the attracting-manifold design and a smooth Lipschitz-constant projection operator. The essence of the scheme is elaborated through the design of the reference-command-tracking control law of an nth-order single-input uncertain nonlinear system that can be transformed into the Brunovsky form. The method offers two major advantages: First, by employing the attracting-manifold design, it is possible to achieve asymptotic recovery of the ideal (deterministic) closed-loop dynamics. In other words, the perturbation caused by parametric uncertainties will be driven to zero asymptotically as a result of such a design, fostering a superior control performance. Second, the established smooth projection operator ensures the Lipschitz constant of the adaptive artificial neural network is bounded from above, thereby providing a certain degree of robustness against adversarial perturbations. The proposed method is validated through a numerical simulation example and compared with a standard certainty-equivalent neural-adaptive control method to demonstrate its superior performance.

Deterministic learning-based neural control for output-constrained strict-feedback nonlinear systems

This paper studies learning from adaptive neural control of output-constrained strict-feedback uncertain nonlinear systems. To overcome the constraint restriction and achieve learning from the closed-loop control process, there are several significant steps. Firstly, a state transformation is introduced to convert the original constrained system output into an unconstrained one. Then an equivalent n-order affine nonlinear system is constructed based on the transformed unconstrained output state in norm form by the system transformation method. By combining dynamic surface control (DSC) technique, an adaptive neural control scheme is proposed for the transformed system. Then all closed-loop signals are uniformly ultimately bounded and the system output tracks the expected trajectory well with satisfying the constraint requirement. Secondly, the partial persistent excitation condition of the radial basis function neural network (RBF NN) could be verified to achieve. Therefore, the uncertain dynamics can be precisely approximated by RBF NN. Subsequently, the learning ability of RBF NN is achieved, and the knowledge acquired from the neural control process is stored in the form of constant neural networks (NNs). By reutilizing the knowledge, a novel learning controller is established to improve the control performance when facing the similar or same control task. The proposed learning control (LC) scheme can avoid repeating the online adaptation of neural weight estimates, which saves computing resources and improves transient performance. Meanwhile, the LC method significantly raises the tracking accuracy and the speed of error convergence while satisfying of the constraint condition simultaneously. Simulation studies demonstrate the efficiency of this proposed control scheme.

A deep motion reliability scheme for robotic operations

This paper proposes a motion reliability analysis method for robotic operations considering uncertainties and external disturbances in the system. First, the kinematic and dynamic model of the robot is established, and the interval number is adopted to describe the uncertain parameters. Then, an observed-based neural adaptive control scheme is developed to guarantee uniform ultimate boundedness of all the signals in the closed loop. Furthermore, a motion reliability model is presented based on interval set operation with the time series of tracking error boundaries. In addition, to improve the computational efficiency, a non-linear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (NARX) and a segmented sampling technique are proposed to model the dynamic response of the system. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed analysis method has high accuracy and efficiency in assessing motion reliability.
