Experimental Analysis of ViLTE Service

Long-term evolution (LTE) is a broadband wireless cellular system currently available in about 200 countries. From the mobile network operator point of view, one of the most appealing characteristics of LTE is the possibility of providing the users with mobile broadband services like voice over LTE and video over LTE (ViLTE), with strict quality of service (QoS) guarantees. The success of such services, which usually require a subscription fee, is obviously tightly bound to the users' quality of experience (QoE), that must be significantly better than the quality perceived in case of free services. This paper attempts to evaluate the perceived quality of the ViLTE service. In more detail, we present the results of an experimental test-bed realised at one of the most popular italian MNO, aimed at evaluating the impact of several network layer QoS parameters on the QoE of the ViLTE service.

Optimal network selection in heterogeneous wireless multimedia networks

The complementary characteristics of different wireless networks make it attractive to integrate a wide range of radio access technologies. Most of previous work on integrating heterogeneous wireless networks concentrates on network layer quality of service (QoS), such as blocking probability and utilization, as design criteria. However, from a user's point of view, application layer QoS, such as multimedia distortion, is an important issue. In this paper, we propose an optimal distributed network selection scheme in heterogeneous wireless networks considering multimedia application layer QoS. Specifically, we formulate the integrated network as a restless bandit system. With this stochastic optimization formulation, the optimal network selection policy is indexable, meaning that the network with the lowest index should be selected. The proposed scheme can be applicable to both tight coupling and loose coupling scenarios in the integration of heterogeneous wireless networks. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

Cross-layer radio resource allocation in packet CDMA wireless mobile networks

An efficient radio resource allocation scheme is crucial for guaranteeing the quality of service (QoS) requirements and fully utilizing the scarce radio resources in wireless mobile networks. Most of previous studies of radio resource allocation in traditional wireless networks concentrates on network layer connection blocking probability QoS. In this paper, we show that physical layer techniques and QoS have significant impacts on network layer QoS. We use a concept of cross-layer effective bandwidth to measure the unified radio resource usage taking into account both physical layer linear minimum-mean square error (LMMSE) receivers and varying statistical characteristics of the packet traffic in code devision multiple access (CDMA) networks. We demonstrate the similarity between traditional circuit-switched networks and packet CDMA networks, which enables rich theories developed in traditional wireless mobile networks to be used in packet CDMA networks. Moreover, since both physical layer signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) QoS and network layer connection blocking probability QoS are considered simultaneously, we can explore the tradeoff between physical layer QoS and network layer QoS in packet CDMA networks.

Collected experience from implementing RSVP

Internet quality of service (QoS) is still a highly debated topic for more than fifteen years. Even with the large variety of QoS proposals and the impressive research advances, there is little deployment yet of network layer QoS technology. One specific problem domain is QoS signalling, which has recently attracted increasing attention to bring forward new standardization approaches. In this paper, an extensive study of RSVP is presented, covering protocol design, software design, and performance aspects of the basic version of RSVP and of certain standardized and experimental extensions. This work is based on and presents the experience from implementing RSVP for UNIX systems and the ns-2 simulation environment. The implementation includes a variety of protocol extensions and incorporates several internal improvements. It has been subject to extensive functional and performance evaluations, the results of which are reported here

Efficient Radio Resource Management in Integrated WLAN/CDMA Mobile Networks

The complementary characteristics of wireless local area networks (WLANs) and wideband code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular networks make it attractive to integrate these two technologies. How to utilize the overall radio resources optimally in this heterogeneous integrated environment is a challenging issue. This paper proposes an optimal joint session admission control scheme for multimedia traffic that maximizes overall network revenue with quality of service (QoS) constraints over both WLANs and CDMA cellular networks. WLANs operate under IEEE 802.11e medium access control (MAC) protocol, which supports QoS for multimedia traffic. A cross-layer optimization approach is used in CDMA networks taking into account both physical layer linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) receivers and network layer QoS requirements. Numerical examples illustrate that the network revenue earned in the proposed joint admission control scheme is significantly more than that when the individual networks are optimized independently.

Jointly optimal power and admission control for delay sensitive traffic in CDMA networks with LMMSE receivers

Quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees for multiclass code division multiple access networks are provided by means of cross-layer optimization across the physical and network layers. At the physical layer, the QoS requirements are specified in terms of a target signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) requirement, and optimal target powers are dynamically adjusted according to the current number of users in the system. At the network layer, the QoS requirements are the blocking probabilities and the call connection delays. The network layer guarantees that both physical layer and network layer QoS are met by employing admission control. An optimal admission control policy is proposed based on a semi-Markov decision process formulation. The tradeoff between blocking and delay is discussed for various buffer configurations. The advantage of advanced signal processing receivers is established using a comparative capacity analysis and simulation with the classical scenario in which the system uses matched filter receivers.

Scheduling in multimedia cdma wireless networks

Wireless systems in the future will have to provide multimedia services where different users have different physical-layer quality of service (QoS) requirements (e.g., bit energy per interference power density, E/sub b//N/sub 0/, or bit error rate and power constraints) and network-layer QoS requirements (e.g., delay bound, delay-jitter, throughput, and loss). We investigate the use of power control, processing gain and/or multiple codes, and scheduling in CDMA systems to accommodate these diverse service requirements. We first show that the instantaneous capacity region, given in terms of the set of user bit rates that can be supported simultaneously subject to peak power and E/sub b//N/sub 0/ constraints, is nonconvex. This suggests that by time-sharing the channel, one may be able to get better system throughput. We define the capacity region as the convex hull of the instantaneous capacity region and we show that it may be obtained by time sharing between operating points, where each user either uses full power or is silent (bang-bang control). We then consider the problem of scheduling so as to meet prespecified delay bounds or minimum service curve requirements for traffic streams, which are specified in terms of a traffic profile such as a sigma-rho constraint (enforced by a leaky bucket) and a guarantee that the system is stable.
