FirepanIF: High Performance Host-Side Flash Cache Warm-Up Method in Cloud Computing

In cloud computing, a shared storage server, which provides a network-attached storage device, is usually used for centralized data management. However, when multiple virtual machines (VMs) concurrently access the storage server through the network, the performance of each VM may decrease due to limited bandwidth. To address this issue, a flash-based storage device such as a solid state drive (SSD) is often employed as a cache in the host server. This host-side flash cache saves remote data, which are frequently accessed by the VM, locally in the cache. However, frequent VM migration in the data center can weaken the effectiveness of a host-side flash cache as the migrated VM needs to warm up its flash cache again on the destination machine. This study proposes Cachemior, Firepan, and FirepanIF for rapid flash-cache migration in cloud computing. Cachemior warms up the flash cache with a data preloading approach using the shared storage server after VM migration. However, it does not achieve a satisfactory level of performance. Firepan and FirepanIF use the source node’s flash cache as the data source for flash cache warm-up. They can migrate the flash-cache more quickly than conventional methods as they can avoid storage and network congestion on the shared storage server. Firepan incurs downtime of the VM during flash cache migration for data consistency. FirepanIF minimizes the VM downtime with the invalidation filter, which traces the I/O activity of the migrated VM during flash cache migration in order to invalidate inconsistent cache blocks. We implement and evaluate the three flash cache migration techniques in a realistic virtualized environment. FirepanIF demonstrates that it can improve the performance of the I/O workload by up to 21.87% compared to conventional methods.

Setting Up an ePathology Service at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi: Joint Collaboration With Cleveland Clinic, United States.

The production of whole slide images is the most advanced form of digital pathology, in which a high-resolution digital scanner is used to rapidly scan glass microscope slides and produce a computer-generated whole slide image that can be saved, stored in a network-attached storage device, and accessed through slide management software within the hospital domain and remotely by authorized users. Digital transformation of glass slides has revolutionized the practice of anatomic pathology by facilitating and expediting consultative services, improving clinical workflow, and becoming an indispensable tool in education and research. To highlight the institutional need of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) and the cultural background for obtaining the United Arab Emirates' first comprehensive digital pathology program; to describe a multiphase road map for achieving full implementation of this platform; and to describe the system's clinical applications and its future potential growth. At Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, we prioritized our efforts to initiate digital consultations (eConsultations) and digital immunohistochemistry services (eIHC) with Cleveland Clinic Laboratories (Cleveland, Ohio). After this, we established an internal archiving system together with a subspecialty-based, organ-specific digital library of pathologic diseases. We describe the strategic adoption and implementation of digital pathology into the clinical workflow of the pathology and laboratory medicine institute of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, and we highlight its impact on clinical operations, educational activities, and patient care.

STMIK Lombok is an institution engaged in education that process data, about students, student practical data, lecturer data, and correspondence. Media file storage applied STMIK Lombok still on a separate computer, both academic data and practical data, so to access the file must be done on the computer where the storage. Based on the capability of Network Attached Storage in local network, by looking at the need of data storage media on the network at STMIK Lombok and the observation result then designed a network architecture by utilizing Network Attached Storage device with focus on fast storage and data transfer process. Stages of research include Data collection, design, and methods of testing To be able to help solve the problem of separate data access then implemented Network Attached Storage (NAS) which is a network to perform distribution of storage assets owned by the server of a network system that has the advantage of faster access to data stored through Local Area Network, minimal cost and cheap and easy maintenance, from setup to configuration, and available Open Source Software. After doing the testing phase it can be concluded that FreeNas as an operating system used for the processing of network storage media is very capable of handling the task well and the facilities that exist in it is very supportive in storage and accessing files. FreeNas web is very helpful and allows users to configure it other than it can be used without having to spend a large cost, and with the facilities in the FreeNas.

Efficient live migration of virtual machines using shared storage

Live migration of virtual machines (VM) across distinct physical hosts is an important feature of virtualization technology for maintenance, load-balancing and energy reduction, especially so for data centers operators and cluster service providers. Several techniques have been proposed to reduce the downtime of the VM being transferred, often at the expense of the total migration time. In this work, we present a technique to reduce the total time required to migrate a running VM from one host to another while keeping the downtime to a minimum. Based on the observation that modern operating systems use the better part of the physical memory to cache data from secondary storage, our technique tracks the VM's I/O operations to the network-attached storage device and maintains an updated mapping of memory pages that currently reside in identical form on the storage device. During the iterative pre-copy live migration process, instead of transferring those pages from the source to the target host, the memory-to-disk mapping is sent to the target host which then fetches the contents directly from the network-attached storage device. We have implemented our approach into the Xen hypervisor and ran a series of experiments with Linux HVM guests. On average, the presented technique shows a reduction of up over 30% on average of the total transfer time for a series of benchmarks.

TESA: a temporal and spatial information aware writeback policy for home network-attached storage devices

Home Network-Attached Storage (NAS) provides an easy way for data sharing and backup among multiple consumer electronic devices in home networks. Because of large capacity and cost effectiveness, disks are widely adopted in home NAS devices. In addition, data writes are common for many home NAS devices since these devices are usually used for data storage and backup. A writeback policy selects which dirty buffers are to be flushed to the disk, which is critical to the system performance under write-intensive workloads. In this paper, an intelligent writeback policy for home NAS called TESA is proposed. In contrast to most existing writeback policies, TESA considers both temporal and spatial information of the dirty buffers to improve the writeback performance. Considering the temporal information helps to reduce the frequency of writing back recently used dirty buffers, and hence leads to reduced write traffic. Considering the spatial information causes a reduction in the overall seek time and rotation delay of the dirty buffer writeback. The TESA writeback policy was implemented on a NAS evaluation board running Linux kernel. The performance results shows that TESA yields a significant performance improvement (i.e., up to 33.1%) over the original writeback policy of Linux. Moreover, TESA outperforms the policy that considers only the temporal information of the dirty buffers by up to 21.0%, and it also has up to 10.9% performance improvement over a previous policy that considers both the temporal and spatial information.

Giga-stack: A method for visualizing giga-pixel layered imagery on massively tiled displays

In this paper, we present a technique for the interactive visualization and interrogation of multi-dimensional giga-pixel imagery. Co-registered image layers representing discrete spectral wavelengths or temporal information can be seamlessly displayed and fused. Users can freely pan and zoom, while swiftly transitioning through data layers, enabling intuitive analysis of massive multi-spectral or time-varying records. A data resource aware display paradigm is introduced which progressively and adaptively loads data from remote network attached storage devices. The technique is specifically designed to work with scalable, high-resolution, massively tiled display environments. By displaying hundreds of mega-pixels worth of visual information all at once, several users can simultaneously compare and contrast complex data layers in a collaborative environment.

An audiophile's utopia

The Sonos wireless audio streaming system works with a proprietary 802.11n type wireless network called SonosNet to prevent interference or drops caused by existing wireless Internet traffic. It can stream from any storage device on your network that supports the common Internet file system (CIFS), such as a NAS (network attached storage device). The user can be located using a Wi-Fi enabled device such as a smart phone. Alternatively, users can authenticate themselves via radio frequency identification. Thus technology companies have demonstrated that our audiophile's utopia is feasible.

Network-attached storage (NAS) is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to serve files over a network in a cross-platform environment. NAS devices face the same security challenges as other network components. This article discusses how NAS fits into the world of IP storage, some security features present in (and missing from) NAS devices, and some security considerations in choosing a NAS.

File server scaling with network-attached secure disks

By providing direct data transfer between storage and client, network-attached storage devices have the potential to improve scalability for existing distributed file systems (by removing the server as a bottleneck) and bandwidth for new parallel and distributed file systems (through network striping and more efficient data paths). Together, these advantages influence a large enough fraction of the storage market to make commodity network-attached storage feasible. Realizing the technology's full potential requires careful consideration across a wide range of file system, networking and security issues. This paper contrasts two network-attached storage architectures---(1) Networked SCSI disks (NetSCSI) are network-attached storage devices with minimal changes from the familiar SCSI interface, while (2) Network-Attached Secure Disks (NASD) are drives that support independent client access to drive object services. To estimate the potential performance benefits of these architectures, we develop an analytic model and perform trace-driven replay experiments based on AFS and NFS traces. Our results suggest that NetSCSI can reduce file server load during a burst of NFS or AFS activity by about 30%. With the NASD architecture, server load (during burst activity) can be reduced by a factor of up to five for AFS and up to ten for NFS.

An analytic model of hierarchical mass storage systems with network-attached storage devices

Network attached storage devices improve I/O performance by separating control and data paths and eliminating host intervention during data transfer. Devices are attached to a high speed network for data transfer and to a slower network for control messages. Hierarchical mass storage systems use disks to cache the most recently used files and tapes (robotic and manually mounted) to store the bulk of the files in the file system. This paper shows how queuing network models can be used to assess the performance of hierarchical mass storage systems that use network attached storage devices. The analytic model validated through simulation was used to analyze many different scenarios.
