Rigor versus Relevance in Economic Theory: A Plea for a Different Methodological Perspective

A recent exchange between the late Mark Blaug and Heinz Kurz and Neri Salvadori on the relevance of Sraffian economics (and a significant amount of more orthodox approaches, for that matter) does not seem to offer conclusive arguments, mainly because both contenders share some outmoded approaches to the philosophy of science. If we instead adopt the perspective of the so-called semantic view of theories, the trade-off between rigor and relevance naturally comes out as a possible characteristic of models we encounter in many scientific disciplines, with economics not being an exception. Thus, those who argue in favor of an economic analysis both rigorous and relevant should at least have to bear the burden of the proof of its possibility.

An Error in the Interpretation of Sraffa's 'Standard Commodity'

Piero Sraffa's masterpiece, The Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities, is written in a remarkably terse style and presents many problems of interpretation and understanding. The role of the Standard commodity in Sraffa's work is one contentious area in interpretations. This paper shows that M. Reder made mathematical errors on this topic in an early review of Sraffa's book. Mark Blaug took up one of these errors and inserted it in successive editions of his well-known textbook on the history of economic thought and in a New Palgrave entry. Heinz D. Kurz and Neri Salvadori point out this error in an exercise in their textbook on the theory of production and in a later paper. Finally, this paper points out Blaug's recent acknowledgement of this error, leading to the likelihood of its removal from at least his textbook in future editions. Nearly half a century after the publication of Sraffa's book, the error described in this paper might be removed from the textbook containing it.

Uncertainty, Evolution, and Economic Theory

A modification of economic analysis to incorporate incomplete information and uncertain foresight as axioms is suggested here. This approach dispenses with “profit maximization”; and it does not rely on the predictable, individual behavior that is usually assumed, as a first approximation, in standard textbook treatments. Despite these changes, the analytical concepts usually associated with such behavior are retained because they are not dependent upon such motivation or foresight. The suggested approach embodies the principles of biological evolution and natural selection by interpreting the economic system as an adoptive mechanism which chooses among exploratory actions generated by the adaptive pursuit of “success” or “profit.” The resulting analysis is applicable to actions usually regarded as aberrations from standard economic behavior as well as to behavior covered by the customary analysis. This wider applicability and the removal of the unrealistic postulates of accurate anticipations and fixed states of knowledge have provided motivation for the study.
