Rodinia palaeogeography: Laurentia as the geological ‘Key’

Abstract Laurentia, core of the North American continent, is surrounded by Neoproterozoic to Cambrian rifted margins. This led to early suggestions that it was located within a Neoproterozoic supercontinent, Rodinia. Recent models of Precambrian palaeogeographical development also point to a ‘Laurentia-centric’ Rodinian supercontinent. Before plate tectonics, the geometry of continental margins, comparison of cratonic interiors and sedimentary covers, and orogenic piercing points were employed to postulate the geography of Phanerozoic Pangaea. Marine studies have subsequently demonstrated that the results were remarkably accurate. Absent in situ Precambrian oceanic crust, the same lines of evidence are employed here to reconstruct Rodinia, together with others unavailable at that time. A strong case can be made for the former juxtaposition of the Pacific margins of Laurentia and East Antarctica–Australia approximately as proposed in the 1990s, even though the precise match remains elusive. The Atlantic margin is likely to have rifted from Baltica, Amazonia and other South American cratons along the Grenvillian orogenic suture in the early Paleozoic, although the suture itself makes accurate reconstruction difficult. A piercing point and ‘tectonic tracer’ can be used to position the Kalahari craton and Coats Land crustal block of Antarctica off the present southern margin of Laurentia and contemporaneous large igneous provinces point to Siberia being located off the Arctic margin. Hence Laurentia does appear to be the ‘Key’ to Rodinian palaeogeography even though the exact geometric fit to its surrounding cratons remains to be refined.

Early Neoproterozoic (870–820 Ma) amalgamation of the Tarim craton (northwestern China) and the final assembly of Rodinia

Abstract In the paleogeographic configuration of the Neoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia, the Tarim craton (northwestern China), traditionally seen as a single block, is placed either on the periphery near northern Australia or India or in a central position between Australia and Laurentia. To distinguish between these possibilities, we present here new primary paleomagnetic results from ca. 900 Ma volcanics in the Aksu region of the northwestern Tarim craton. The data reveal a ~28° latitudinal difference between the North Tarim and South Tarim blocks at ca. 900 Ma and constrain the age of amalgamation of the Tarim craton to between 870 and 820 Ma. Combining paleomagnetic poles from Tarim and major cratons of Rodinia with geological evidence, a two-stage orogenic model is proposed for the assembly of Rodinia. Late Mesoproterozoic orogenesis (1.3–1.0 Ga) led to the assembly of Australia–East Antarctica, Baltica, Umkondia, South Tarim, and Cathaysia with Laurentia, forming the core of Rodinia. Thereafter, the Jiangnan–Central Tarim Ocean separating North Tarim and Yangtze from South Tarim and Cathaysia was closed before ca. 820 Ma. This second Jiangnan–Central Tarim orogeny caused nearly coeval amalgamation of the peripheral Tarim and South China cratons by the welding of North Tarim and Yangtze to South Tarim and Cathaysia, respectively. The supercontinent of Rodinia was thus assembled by two orogenic phases separated by ~200 m.y.

Meso-Neoproterozoic Grenville-Sveconorwegian intracontinental orogen: history, tectonics, geodynamics

The objective of this paper is to represent the main features inherent to Grenville-Sveconorwegian Orogen (GSNO) and to propose a model of tectonic and geodynamic evolution of this orogen based on the results of research concerning similar Precambrian tectonic units in the East European Craton. The studies of the conditions and settings related to origin and evolution of GSNO are of special interest, because it is located geographicaly and in a certain sense ideologically in the center of Rodinia, a supposed Neoproterozoic supercontinent. GSNO originated in the MezoNeoproterozoic in the inner region of the Lauroscandia continent. At present, the synformal tectonic structure of GSNO is divided into two portions: Grenville sector along the southeastern margin of the Canadian Shield, and Sveconorwegian sector in the southwestern Scandinavia. The integrity of Lauroscandia was twice disturbed in the MezoNeoproterozoic when oceanic structures resembling the Atlantic Ocean were formed. Later on, the continuity of the continent was restored with the involvement of oceanic lithosphere subduction and accretion and obduction of the island-arc and oceanic terranes. We distinguish two stages in the GSNO history: (1) ‘preparatory’ stage (from ~1.90 to ~1.16 Ga), and (2) formation of GSNO proper (from ~1.19 to ~0.90 Ga). The manifestations of granulite-facies metamorphism were repeatedly recorded before the Grenville Orogeny at 1.67–1.66, 1.47–1.45, 1.37–1.35, and 1.20–1.18 Ga. The Ottawan stage of the Grenville metamorphism proper is dated between 1.16 and 1.05–1.03 Ga. Metamorphism at the base of Allochthonous Belt corresponds to high-pressure granulite facies and, in a number of places, to hightemperature eclogite facies (800–900 °C at pressure in the range between 14 and 20 kbar). The age of metamorphism of rocks within Paraautochthonous Belt is 1.05–0.95 Ga; metamorphic grade increases from the greenschist facies near the Grenville front to the high-pressure amphibolite facies near Allochthon Boundary Thrust showing an inverted metamorphic zoning. High-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism is characteristic of Sveconorwegian sector; and high-temperature eclogites are observed locally at the base of the allochthonous complexes and within the paraautochthonous complexes. A distinctive feature of GNSO is the abundant occurrence of specific intrusive magmatism. Massifs of anorthosite-mangerite-charnockite-granite (AMCG) and anorthosite-rapakivi granite (ARG) complexes formed 1.8–1.5 Ga ago frame the orogen as a wide arc. In the internal region of GSNO, these complexes were formed successively at 1.16–1.13, 1.09–1.05, 0.99–0.96, and 0.93–0.92 Ga. Later on, after the intrusion, the massifs unevenly underwent granulite-facies metamorphism. The high-temperature magmatism and metamorphism, numerous repeated thermal pulses and enormous crustal body that underwent high-temperature transformation point to a mantle plume as the most adequate source of thermal energy. The model of intracontinental development of GSNO comes into conflict with popular ideas, which assume origination of this orogen as a result of the collision and welding of the formerly distant continents (Laurentia, Baltica and Amazonia), which, as suggested, completed the assembly of Rodinia supercontinent. A conclusion is drawn that the concept of tectonic position and geodynamic evolution of GSNO, which is not a counterpart of the Tibet-Himalayan Orogen, should be revised.

Magmatic history and crustal genesis of western South America: Constraints from U-Pb ages and Hf isotopes of detrital zircons in modern rivers

Western South America provides an outstanding laboratory for studies of magmatism and crustal evolution because it contains Archean–Paleoproterozoic cratons that amalgamated during Neoproterozoic supercontinent assembly, as well as a long history of Andean magmatism that records crustal growth and reworking in an accretionary orogen. We have attempted to reconstruct the growth and evolution of western South America through U-Pb geochronologic and Hf isotopic analyses of detrital zircons from 59 samples of sand mainly from modern rivers. Results from 5524 new U-Pb ages and 1199 new Hf isotope determinations are reported. Our data are integrated with previously published geochronologic and Hf isotopic information, yielding a combined record that includes >42,000 ages and >1900 Hf isotope analyses. These large data sets yield five main conclusions: (1) South America has an age distribution that is similar to most other continents, presumably reflecting processes of crustal generation and/or preservation related to the supercontinent cycle, with age maxima at 2.2–1.8 Ga, 1.6–0.9 Ga, 700–400 Ma, and 360–200 Ma; (2) <200 Ma magmatism in western South America has age maxima at ca. 183, 166, 149, 125, 110, 88, 65, 35, 21, and 4 Ma (with significant north-south and east-west variations), yielding an average cyclicity of ∼33 m.y.; (3) for the past 200 m.y., no correlation exists between magmatism and the velocity of convergence between central South America and Pacific oceanic plates, the age of the downgoing plate, or the absolute motion of South America; (4) Hf isotopes record reworking of older crustal materials during most time periods, with incorporation of juvenile crust at ca. 1.6–1.0 Ga, 500–300 Ma, and ca. 175–35 Ma; and (5) the Hf isotopic signature of <200 Ma magmatism is apparently controlled by the generation of evolved crust during crustal thickening and eastward arc migration, versus juvenile magmas during extensional tectonism and westward and/or outboard migration of arc magmatism.

Origin of the North Qinling Microcontinent and Proterozoic geotectonic evolution of the Kuanping Ocean, Central China

The high Pb isotopic ratios among the North Qinling Microcontinent (NQM), the western margin of the Yangtze Craton (WYC) and the western part of South Qinling (WSQ) indicate an identical or very similar origin of their basement. In addition, the analogical peak values of Paleoproterozoic detrital zircons also agree that the NQM originated from the WYC. The evolution of the NQM and the Kuanping Ocean is closely related to the aggregation and break-up of the Columbia supercontinent. According to the formation of the Supercontinent Columbia in the Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2.0–1.8Ga), the debris from the WYC accreted vertically to form the NQM. Then the Kuanping Ocean began its subduction when the Supercontinent Columbia was rifted after the Paleoproterozoic (ca. 1.8Ga). As a result, the passive continental margin of the North China Craton (NCC) and the Yangtze Craton (YZC) turned into an active continental margin. The continental arc (the Xiong’er Group) at the southern margin of the North China Craton (SNCC) and separation of the Qinling Group from the WYC in the Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic (ca. 1.8–1.0Ga) are also the consequence of this subduction. In the context of the amalgamation of the Neoproterozoic (ca. 1.0–0.9Ga) Supercontinent Rodinia, the NQM and the YZC collided with each other, thereby generating the closure of the Songshugou back-arc basin. Moreover, the terrigenous clastic sediments from some cratons of the Rodinia Supercontinent and the remnant oceanic crust of the Kuanping Ocean constituted the protolith of the present-day Kuanping Group.

A possible buried Paleoproterozoic collisional orogen beneath central South China: Evidence from seismic-reflection profiling

The South China Craton consisting of the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks has figured importantly in the Neoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia. However, its lack of Grenville-age structures and metamorphism and the presence of Paleoproterozoic high-grade metamorphism and S-type magmatism raise questions about the timing and nature of the Yangtze–Cathaysia collision. Here we present results of a 400-km-long high-resolution seismic reflection profile across the purported suture between the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks. The seismic profile reveals folded and thrust-imbricated seismic reflectors which we interpret to represent the relics of the Yangtze–Cathaysia collisional orogen. The inferred orogen was extended in the Neoproterozoic, resulting in its burial by Neoproterozoic flysch strata. Geochronological data suggest that this buried orogen was formed in the Paleoproterozoic (∼2.0–1.9Ga), likely associated with the assembling of the Columbia supercontinent. These results call for major revision of the models for the formation of the South China craton and its role in the assembling of the Rodinia and the Columbia supercontinents.

Antarctica and supercontinent evolution: historical perspectives, recent advances and unresolved issues

AbstractThe Antarctic rock record spans some 3.5 billion years of history, and has made important contributions to our understanding of how Earth's continents assemble and disperse through time. Correlations between Antarctica and other southern continents were critical to the concept of Gondwana, the Palaeozoic supercontinent used to support early arguments for continental drift, while evidence for Proterozoic connections between Antarctica and North America led to the ‘SWEAT’ configuration (linking SW USA to East Antarctica) for an early Neoproterozoic supercontinent known as Rodinia. Antarctica also contains relicts of an older Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic supercontinent known as Nuna, along with several Archaean fragments that belonged to one or more ‘supercratons’ in Neoarchaean times. It thus seems likely that Antarctica contains remnants of most, if not all, of Earth's supercontinents, and Antarctic research continues to provide insights into their palaeogeography and geological evolution. One area of research is the latest Neoproterozoic–Mesozoic active margin of Gondwana, preserved in Antarctica as the Ross Orogen and a number of outboard terranes that now form West Antarctica. Major episodes of magmatism, deformation and metamorphism along this palaeo-Pacific margin at 590–500 and 300–230 Ma can be linked to reduced convergence along the internal collisional orogens that formed Gondwana and Pangaea, respectively; indicating that accretionary systems are sensitive to changes in the global plate tectonic budget. Other research has focused on Grenville-age (c. 1.0 Ga) and Pan-African (c. 0.5 Ga) metamorphism in the East Antarctic Craton. These global-scale events record the amalgamation of Rodinia and Gondwana, respectively. Three coastal segments of Grenville-age metamorphism in the Indian Ocean sector of Antarctica are each linked to the c. 1.0 Ga collision between older cratons but are separated by two regions of pervasive Pan-African metamorphism ascribed to Neoproterozoic ocean closure. The tectonic setting of these events is poorly constrained given the sparse exposure, deep erosion level and likelihood that younger metamorphic events have reactivated older structures. The projection of these orogens under the ice is also controversial, but it is likely that at least one of the Pan-African orogens links up with the Shackleton Range on the palaeo-Pacific margin of the craton. Sedimentary detritus and glacial erratics at the edge of the ice sheet provide evidence for the c. 1.0 and 0.5 Ga orogenesis in the continental interior, while geophysical data reveal prominent geological boundaries under the ice, but there are insufficient data to trace these features to exposed structures of known age. Until we can resolve the subglacial geometry and tectonic setting of the c. 0.5 and 1.0 Ga metamorphism, there will be no consensus on the configuration of Rodinia, or the size and shape of the continents that existed immediately before and after this supercontinent. Given this uncertainty, it is premature to speculate on the role of Antarctica in earlier supercontinents, but it is likely that Antarctica will continue to provide important constraints when our attention shifts to these earlier events.

Paleoproterozoic–earliest Mesoproterozoic basin evolution in the Mount Isa region, northern Australia and implications for reconstructions of the Nuna and Rodinia supercontinents

Paleoproterozoic-earliest Mesoproterozoic sequences in the Mount Isa region of northern Australia preserve a 200 Myr record (1800-1600 Ma) of intracontinental rifting, culminating in crustal thinning, elevated heat flow and establishment of a North American Basin and Range-style crustal architecture in which basin evolution was linked at depth to bimodal magmatism, high temperature-low pressure metamorphism and the formation of extensional shear zones. Rifting initiated in crystalline basement ≥1840 Ma old and produced three stacked sedimentary basins (1800-1750 Ma Leichhardt, 1730-1670 Ma Calvert and 1670-1575 Ma Isa superbasins) separated by major unconformities and in which depositional conditions progressively changed from fluviatilelacustrine to fully marine. By 1685 Ma, a deep marine, turbidite-dominated basin existed in the E and basaltic magmas had evolved in composition from continental to oceanic tholeiites as the crust became increasingly thinned and attenuated. Except for an episode of minor deformation and basin inversion at c. 1640 Ma, sedimentation continued across the region until onset of the Isan Orogeny at 1600 Ma. A near-identical record of crustal thinning and basaltic magmatism accompanied basin formation (lower Willyama Supergroup) in the formerly contiguous Broken Hill region from 1730-1670 Ma. This was followed by further extension and a second phase of basin development that lasted until at least 1640 Ma. Modern-day rifted continental margins preserve a comparable record of crustal thinning and near-continuous basin formation over 100-200 Myr timescales, supporting suggestions that the late Paleoproterozoic-early Mesoproterozoic rift basins of Mount Isa and Broken Hill similarly evolved to continental breakup and formed part of a continental margin sequence no later than 1640 Ma and possibly as early as 1670 Ma. This rifted margin predates assembly and breakup of the Neoproterozoic Rodinia supercontinent to which Australia once belonged and best accords with a pre-Rodinia, SWEAT-like super-continent (Nuna) that matches the E-facing late Paleoproterozoic-early Mesoproterozoic rift sequences of eastern Australia against rocks of comparable age in western Canada. Reconstructions of Rodinia (AUSWUS) based on the distribution of Grenville-age orogenic belts that coincidently position the continental rift sequences of Broken Hill along strike from more juvenile 1700-1650 Ma accreted terranes in the SW United States (Yavapai and Mazatzal provinces) are only possible if the proposed alignment of terranes is not original but an artefact of Neoproterozoic supercontinent assembly. The SWEAT hypothesis avoids this complication but, like AUSWUS, presupposes that eastern Australia and western Laurentia remained juxtaposed throughout the Mesoproterozoic until onset of Rodinia breakup after 830 Ma.

U–Pb zircon chronology of the Pangidi–Kondapalle layered intrusion, Eastern Ghats belt, India: Constraints on Mesoproterozoic arc magmatism in a convergent margin setting

The Pangidi–Kondapalle layered intrusion is emplaced within high-grade supracrustal rocks in the southern sector of the Eastern Ghats Granulite Belt proximal to the south-eastern periphery of the Indian plate. This layered complex consists mainly of anorthosites and gabbronorites with pyroxenite cumulates containing orthopyroxenites and chromitites in a regressive intrusive sequence. Here we report laser ablation ICP-MS data and REE geochemistry of zircons from three co-spatial anorthositic bodies in this complex. Our results show mean 207Pb/206Pb ages of 1634±18Ma (MSWD=0.55) for the anorthosite from Pangidi. Two anorthosite samples from Kondapalle yield mean207Pb/206Pb ages of 1628±36Ma (MSWD=0.54) and 1693±110Ma (MSWD=5.5). The zircons from all the anorthosite samples show high REE contents, prominent HREE enrichment and a conspicuous positive Eu anomaly, suggesting a common melt source. The prominent Mesoproterozoic ages revealed from our U–Pb dating of zircons from these layered complexes suggest subduction-related magmatic underplating in a convergent margin setting associated with the amalgamation of the Columbia-derived fragments within the Neoproterozoic supercontinent.

Tectonic evolution of western Amazonia from the assembly of Rodinia to its break-up

Plate tectonic reconstructions of the late Mesoproterozoic–Neoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia juxtapose the western margin of Amazonia against eastern Laurentia based on palaeomagnetic, isotopic, and geological evidence. Mesoproterozoic (‘Grenvillian’) orogenic belts are of crucial importance to these reconstructions as they act as key tectonic tracers for Amazonia–Laurentia interactions. They include orogenic belts sited on Amazonia (such as the Sunsás Orogen), para- autochthonous elements such as the Mesoproterozoic metamorphic basement inliers within the Andean Belt (e.g. in the Colombian Andes), exotic terranes accreted to Amazonia during Rodinia assembly (such as the Arequipa Massif), and orphaned fragments of Amazonian basement in Central and North America. A review of the timing of Sunsás orogenesis demonstrates that it occurred from about 1.2–1 Ga in eastern Bolivia and the western Amazon region of Brazil. This is significantly older than the timing of metamorphism in Mesoproterozoic basement inliers of the Colombian Andes, which record a late metamorphic event between 0.9 and 1.0 Ga. Orphaned fragments of Amazonian basement in Laurentia (such as the Blue Ridge/Mars Hill terrane) suggest collision between southeastern Laurentia and Amazonia at ca. 1.15 Ga. The Arequipa Massif (and Antofalla Basement) most likely represents an exotic basement terrane that was caught up in the collision of southeastern Laurentia with western Amazonia. Recent palaeomagnetic data suggest that Amazonia moved northeastwards along the eastern Laurentian margin during Grenvillian collision. Amazonia evidently collided with southern Laurentia at ca. 1200 Ma and, as a result of progressive dextral transcurrent movement, it encountered the Labrador–Greenland sector of eastern Laurentia (and possibly Baltica) by 980 Ma. The timing of the Rodinia break-up in western Amazonia is poorly constrained. Evidence exists supporting a Neoproterozoic western Amazonian active margin, which would imply its at least partial separation from the conjugate rift margin of eastern Laurentia (i.e. formation of a proto-Iapetus Ocean) prior to ca. 650 Ma. This rifting event may be linked to A-type magmatism at ca. 770–690 Ma which is documented in both southeast Laurentia and western Amazonia. Final separation must have been completed by Early Cambrian times based on the unequivocal evidence for drift-related sedimentation on the Laurentian margin of the Iapetus Ocean.

Mesoproterozoic ophiolitic mélange from the SE periphery of the Indian plate: U–Pb zircon ages and tectonic implications

The Kanigiri mélange within the Proterozoic Nellore–Khammam schist belt in southern Peninsular India includes ophiolitic fragments that represent the remnants of an oceanic plate. The ophiolitic units were accreted along a NE-trending suture that juxtaposes the Proterozoic Eastern Ghats Granulite Belt (EGGB) against the Archean Nellore Schist Belt of the Dharwar craton. The ophiolite components in the Kanigiri mélange include plagiogranites and gabbros which show mutually intrusive relations indicating their coeval nature. We report laser ablation-ICP-MS age data and REE geochemistry of zircons from the gabbro and granite. The zircons from both gabbro and granite show high REE contents, prominent HREE enrichment and a conspicuous negative Eu anomaly, suggesting a common melt source. Zircon REE abundances and normalized patterns show little intersample and intrasample variations. U–Pb dating of the zircons reveals prominent Mesoproterozoic ages for the plagiogranite, with the ca.1.33 Ga age of the Kanigiri ophiolitic mélange offering important clues for arc–continent collision during the final stages of amalgamation of the Columbia-derived fragments within the Neoproterozoic supercontinent assembly.

Late Proterozoic plate tectonics and palaeogeography: a tale of two supercontinents, Rodinia and Pannotia

AbstractThe plate tectonic and palaeogeographic history of the late Proterozoic is a tale of two supercontinents: Rodinia and Pannotia. Rodinia formed during the Grenville Event (c. 1100 Ma) and remained intact until its collision with the Congo continent (800–750 Ma). This collision closed the southern part of the Mozambique Seaway, and triggered the break-up of Rodinia. The Panthalassic Ocean opened as the supercontinent of Rodinia split into a northern half (East Gondwana, Cathyasia and Cimmeria) and a southern half (Laurentia, Amazonia–NW Africa, Baltica, and Siberia). Over the next 150 Ma, North Rodinia rotated counter-clockwise over the North Pole, while South Rodinia rotated clockwise across the South Pole. In the latest Precambrian (650–550 Ma), the three Neoproterozoic continents – North Rodinia, South Rodinia and the Congo continents – collided during the Pan-Africa Event forming the second Neoproterozoic supercontinent, Pannotia (Greater Gondwanaland). Pan-African mountain building and the fall in sea level associated with the assembly of Pannotia may have triggered the extreme Ice House conditions that characterize the middle and late Neoproterozoic. Although the palaeogeographic maps presented here do not prohibit a Snowball Earth, the mapped extent of Neoproterozoic ice sheets favour a bipolar Ice House World with a broad expanse of ocean at the equator. Soon after it was assembled (c. 560 Ma), Pannotia broke apart into the four principal Palaeozoic continents: Laurentia (North America), Baltica (northern Europe), Siberia and Gondwana. The amalgamation and subsequent break-up of Pannotia may have triggered the ‘Cambrian Explosion’. The first economically important accumulations of hydrocarbons are from Neoproterozoic sources. The two major source rocks of this age (Nepa of Siberia and Huqf of Oman) occur in association with massive Neoproterozoic evaporite deposits and in the warm equatorial–subtropical belt, within 30° of the equator.

Cambrian Naraoiids (Arthropoda): Morphology, Ontogeny, Systematics, and Evolutionary Relationships

Naraoiids, defined as lightly sclerotized arthropods with a dimidiate tergum of two sclerites separated by a single transverse articulation, have been found in the Cambrian and Silurian. During the Cambrian they had a wide distribution coinciding with trilobite realms. This pattern may be related to the breakup of a Neoproterozoic supercontinent, probably Pannotia, which implies that naraoiids originated before the Cambrian “explosion.” Based on new observations on the original material from the Burgess Shale (Middle Cambrian, British Columbia),Naraoia haliais reconsidered as a valid species. The validity is further confirmed by a new record of the occurrence of this species in the Chengjiang Lagerstätte (Lower Cambrian, China). In addition, some structures ofN. compactaof the Burgess Shale have been reinterpreted. Two more naraoiid species are redescribed in detail from the Chengjiang Lagerstätte on the basis of more than 1,000 well-preserved specimens.Naraoia spinosashows dimorphism andMisszhouia longicaudataexhibits geographical variation in the overall shape of the dorsal exoskeleton. Naraoiids may have a protaspis-like larva, but the previously assigned protaspis has proven to be a separate taxon,Primicaris. In dorsal view, naraoiids resemble a giant “degree 0” meraspis (i.e., without thorax), and could have originated from different heterochronic processes, neoteny or hypermorphosis. Naraoiids are generally accepted as vagrant benthos. A predatory/scavenging life mode is supported by functional morphology and recent analogues. A healed injury inM. longicaudatasuggests that they could be the prey of larger predators, most likely anomalocaridids. We suggest that differences in exopod composition might represent evolutionary changes through the Early–Middle Cambrian. The monophyly of the Naraoiidae is not firmly established. Similarity to liwiids, supposed to be the close relatives of naraoiids, is limited to overall shape. We exclude naraoiids from the Trilobita, though there do exist a number of similarities between them.

Eolian deposits in the Neoproterozoic Big Bear Group, San Bernardino Mountains, California, USA

Strata interpreted to be eolian are recognized in the Neoproterozoic Big Bear Group in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California, USA. The strata consist of medium- to large-scale (30 cm to > 6 m) cross-stratified quartzite considered to be eolian dune deposits and interstratified thinly laminated quartzite that are problematically interpreted as either eolian translatent climbing ripple laminae, or as tidal-flat deposits. High index ripples and adhesion structures considered to be eolian are associated with the thinly laminated and cross-stratified strata. The eolian strata are in a succession that is characterized by flaser bedding, aqueous ripple marks, mudcracks, and interstratified small-scale cross-strata that are suggestive of a tidal environment containing local fluvial deposits. The eolian strata may have formed in a near-shore environment inland of a tidal flat. The Neoproterozoic Big Bear Group is unusual in the western United States and may represent a remnant of strata that were originally more widespread and part of the hypothetical Neoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia. The Big Bear Group perhaps is preserved only in blocks that were downdropped along Neoproterozoic extensional faults. The eolian deposits of the Big Bear Group may have been deposited during arid conditions that preceded worldwide glacial events in the late Neoproterozoic. Possibly similar pre-glacial arid events are recognized in northern Mexico, northeast Washington, Australia, and northwest Canada.

Epeiric Sea Formation on Neoproterozoic Supercontinent Break-up: A Distinctive Signature in Coastal Storm Bed Amalgamation

Literature review underlines uncertainty in the configuration of the Neoproterozoic supercontinent, (with Rodinia and Palaeopangaea reconstructions enjoying wide support), that stems primarily from inadequate palaeomagnetic data. Nonetheless, breakup of this supercontinent at ca. 0.65 Ga was conducive for epeiric sea formation globally. In the Vindhyan basin, India, a carbonate depositing sea developed over a fluvial-aeolian plain, at approximately 0.6 Ga. The top part of the Vindhyan Supergroup, the Upper Bhander Sandstone, was, however, able to prograde because of a decline in the rate of relative sea level rise. Within this general setting, temporal increases in this rate caused storm deposition at the coastline, largely in a supralittoral setting. Bizarre amalgamation of these storm beds without erosion likely owes its origin to severe curtailment of the velocity of the downwelling flow on the very gentle, muddy coastal slopes, and is thought to be a hallmark of deposition in an open epeiric setting. The storm domination in the Bhander embayment shelf is compatible with the Palaeopangaea supercontinental configuration.

A 90° spin on Rodinia: possible causal links between the Neoproterozoic supercontinent, superplume, true polar wander and low-latitude glaciation

We report here new geochronological and paleomagnetic data from the 802±10 Ma Xiaofeng dykes in South China. Together with existing data, these results suggest that Rodinia probably spread from the equator to the polar region at ca. 800 Ma, followed by a rapid ca. 90° rotation around an axis near Greenland that brought the entire supercontinent to a low-latitude position by ca. 750 Ma. We propose that it was the initiation of a mantle superplume under the polar end of Rodinia that triggered an episode of true polar wander (TPW) which brought the entire supercontinent into equatorial latitudes. An unusually extensive emerged land area at the equator increased both atmospheric CO 2 drawdown and global albedo, which, along with waning plume volcanism led directly to the low-latitude Sturtian glaciation at ca. 750–720 Ma.

Palaeomagnetic configuration of continents during the Proterozoic

Palaeomagnetic data are used to study the configurations of continents during the Proterozoic. Applying stringent reliability criteria, the positions of the continents at 12 times in the 2.45- to 1.00-Ga period have been constructed. The continents lie predominantly in low to intermediate latitudes. The sedimentological indicators of palaeoclimate are generally consistent with the palaeomagnetic latitudes, with the exception of the Early Proterozoic, when low latitude glaciations took place on several continents. The Proterozoic continental configurations are generally in agreement with current geological models of the evolution of the continents. The data suggest that three large continental landmasses existed during the Proterozoic. The oldest one is the Neoarchaean Kenorland, which comprised at least Laurentia, Baltica, Australia and the Kalahari craton. The protracted breakup of Kenorland during the 2.45- to 2.10-Ga interval is manifested by mafic dykes and sedimentary rift-basins on many continents. The second ‘supercontinental’ landmass is Hudsonland (also known as Columbia). On the basis of purely palaeomagnetic data, this supercontinent consisted of Laurentia, Baltica, Ukraine, Amazonia and Australia and perhaps also Siberia, North China and Kalahari. Hudsonland existed from 1.83 to ca. 1.50–1.25 Ga. The youngest assembly is the Neoproterozoic supercontinent of Rodinia, which was formed by continent–continent collisions during ∼1.10–1.00 Ga and which involved most of the continents. A new model for its assembly and configuration is presented, which suggests that multiple Grenvillian age collisions took place during 1.10–1.00 Ga. The configurations of Kenorland, Hudsonland and Rodinia depart from each other and also from the Pangaea assembly. The tectonic styles of their amalgamation are also different reflecting probable changes in sizes and thicknesses of the cratonic blocks as well as changes in the thermal conditions of the mantle through time.

Geologic complexes of the southern marginal part of the Siberian Craton as indicators of the Neoproterozoic supercontinent evolution

The aim of this paper is to discuss the Late Precambrian rock complexes in the southern margin of the Siberian Craton, associated with the extension. The analysis of the data available suggests two episodes of intracontinental breakup which resulted in the opening of oceanic spaces (1300-900 and 850-550 million years). The time sequence of volcanogenic terrigenous of rifting origin ! basic dike swarms ! carbonate- terrigenous rock sequences ! ophiolites and island-arc rocks reflects the consecutive change of geodynamic environments in the marginal part of the craton. The stage of intracontinental rifting was replaced by the stage of advanced rifting, which preceded the continental breakup and the formation of the oceanic crust. Next followed two stages of oceanic crust evolution: the passive stage (sedimentary complexes of the passive margins) and the active stage (island arcs, backarc seas, and the like). Dierent versions are discussed for the manifestation of extension processes in the southwestern and southeastern segments of the Siberian Craton in connection with the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent.
