ABSTRACT Experiments on the composites of liquid crystals and quantum dots showed the significant role of quantum dots on the properties of the nematic–smectic-A phase transition. The effects of quantum dots on the nematic-smectic-A phase transition have been discussed using Flory- Huggins theory of isotropic mixing and Landau-de Gennes theory. The impact of quantum dots on the smectic-A order parameters, nematic–smectic-A transition temperature, splay and bend elastic constants has been discussed. The smectic-A order parameters, transition temperature and elastic constants decrease with the increase of volume fraction of quantum dots.
