Dual-beam cross-correlation spectrometer for radial velocity measurements.

Measuring the radial velocity of an object can be achieved by quantifying the Doppler shift of Fraunhofer lines. Measurements are typically made using high-resolution conventional spectroscopy, in which the Doppler shift is calculated numerically on a computer. An alternative technique includes cross-correlation spectroscopy, which performs an optical correlation of the incident spectrum against a reference spectrum embedded in the instrument. Many existing correlation spectrometers leverage a chrome mask and obtain a single beam measurement, making the sensors more sensitive to atmospheric turbulence without moving parts. In this paper, we present a static dual-beam polarization-based technique for acquiring cross-correlation spectra that is insensitive to atmospheric turbulence and contains no moving parts. The instrument is based on acquiring light both inside and outside of the solar Fraunhofer lines using a twisted nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. Correlation spectra can be calculated as a ratio of these two components. A model of the dual-beam cross-correlation spectrometer is presented and subsequently validated with experimental observations of Venus. Radial velocity accuracies, as calculated against reference ephemerides, yielded an absolute error less than 0.24%.

Optical techniques for Rydberg physics in lattice geometries

We address the technical challenges when performing quantum information experiments with ultracold Rydberg atoms in lattice geometries. We discuss the following key aspects: (i) The coherent manipulation of atomic ground states, (ii) the coherent excitation of Rydberg states, and (iii) spatial addressing of individual lattice sites. We briefly review methods and solutions which have been successfully implemented, and give examples based on our experimental apparatus. This includes an optical phase-locked loop, an intensity and frequency stabilization setup for lasers, and a nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator.

Spatial Light Interference Microscopy (SLIM) using twisted-nematic liquid-crystal modulation

We report the use of a twisted nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (TNLC-SLM) for quantitative phase imaging. The experimental setup is a new implementation of the SLIM principle, which is a phase shifting, white light method for quantitative phase imaging. The approach is based on switching between the phase and amplitude modulation modes of the SLM. Our system is able to deliver a 0.99 nm spatial and 1.33 nm temporal pathlength sensitivity while retaining the optical transverse resolution. The system is implemented as an additional module mounted to a conventional microscope, which makes the system very easy to deploy and integrate with other imaging modalities.

Improvement of the switching frequency of a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator with optimal cell gap

In the application of a nematic liquid-crystal (LC) spatial light modulator, we derived the formula of retardation dynamic response of the device by solving the Erickson-Leslie equation. Then, the response time of the 2π phase change can be expressed as a function of the LC cell gap. The theoretical and experimental results all indicate that the response time of 2π first decreases and then increases with the LC cell gap increasing, and there is an optimal cell gap to obtain the shortest response time. Therefore, the method of optimizing the cell gap shows potential to improve the switching frequency for all type of nematic LC optical device with specific modulation quantity.

Holographic photolysis of caged neurotransmitters

Stimulation of light-sensitive chemical probes has become a powerful tool for the study of dynamic signaLing processes in living tissue. Classically, this approach has been constrained by limitations of lens-based and point-scanning illumination systems. Here we describe a microscope configuration that incorporates a nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator to generate holographic patterns of illumination. This microscope can produce illumination spots of variable size and number, and in patterns shaped to precisely match user-defined elements in a specimen. Using holographic illumination to photolyze caged glutamate in brain slices, we show that shaped excitation on segments of neuronal dendrites and simultaneous, multispot excitation of different dendrites enables precise spatial and rapid temporal control of glutamate receptor activation. By allowing the excitation volume shape to be tailored precisely, the holographic microscope provides an extremely flexible method for activation of various photosensitive proteins and small molecules.

A Projection System for Real World Three-Dimensional Objects Using Spatial Light Modulators

We discuss a projection system for real world three-dimensional objects using spatial light modulators (SLM). An algorithm to encode the digital holograms of real world objects on to an SLM is presented. We present results from experiments to project holograms of real world holograms using a nematic liquid crystal SLM. We discuss the case when the pixel sizes of the charge-coupled device (CCD) and SLM used for recording the hologram and projection are different.

Digital speckle shearing interferometer using a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator

A digital speckle shearing interferometer is developed using a dynamic binary phase grating realized by an electrically addressed, twisted nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator as the shearing element. The standard phase-shifting algorithm can be easily achieved by changing the grating pattern displayed on the spatial light modulator. The method has a number of advantages including variable sensitivity, no moving part, and no requirement for calibration of the value of the phase shift. The error due to the unexpected diffraction order is also discussed.

Retrocommunication utilizing electroabsorption modulators and nonmechanical beam steering

A novel retrocommunication link utilizing reflective multiple quantum well (MQW) optical modulators and nonmechanical beam steering and tracking is demonstrated. Large aperture reflective MQW modulators using AlGaAs/GaAs are optimized and manufactured. The modulators exhibit a contrast ratio larger than 4:1 and a modulation bandwidth of 10 MHz. Nonmechanical beam steering and tracking are studied using nematic liquid crystal (NLC) spatial light modulators (SLMs). The communication link is comprised of a retromodulating array with four MQW modulators and a transceiver using a NLC SLM for beam steering and tracking. Transfer of audio, real-time image data and pseudorandom bit sequences over 100-m range while tracking the moving retromodulator is shown. The link is capable of transferring data at approximately 8 Mbps.

Polarization properties of a nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator for phase modulation

The polarization properties of a nematic zero-twist liquid-crystal (NLC) spatial light modulator (SLM) were studied. A large ratio between the liquid-crystal (LC) layer thickness and the pixel pitch combined with spatial variations in the applied electric field causes fringing fields between pixels. Depending on the LC alignment, the electric field components within the LC layer can result in a twist deformation. The produced inhomogeneous optical anisotropy affects the polarization of light propagating through the device. We experimentally examined polarization effects in different diffraction orders for both binary and blazed phase gratings. Simulations of the LC deformation together with finite-difference time-domain simulations for the optical propagation were used to calculate the corresponding far-field intensities. It was demonstrated how rigorous simulations of the NLC SLM properties can be used to understand the polarization features of different diffraction orders.

Multi-phase modulation for nematic liquid crystal on silicon backplane spatial light modulators using pulse-width modulation driving scheme

In phase modulating diffractive optical devices multi-phase modulation provides improved performance over binary modulation. Multi-phase modulation can be achieved by using nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulators (NLCSLM) with pulse-width modulation driven from a binary CMOS backplane. This paper presents the characteristics and the driving scheme of the 512 × 512 Si-backplane SLM for the implementation of the multi-phase modulation while comparing the binary and four-level phase holograms. Diffraction efficiency of 39.7% for binary grating and 72.9% for four-level blazed grating were obtained at the spatial frequency 1.56 lines/mm.

Formation of a doughnut laser beam for super-resolving microscopy using a phase spatial light modulator

The formation of a doughnut-shaped laser beam is presented. To generate the beam, we use an optically addressed parallel-aligned nematic liquid-crystal phase spatial light modulator (PAL-SLM), and observe the shape of the focused beam. By using a compensating technique for wave aberration, the beam has a symmetric doughnut shape with a hole size of 1 µm on the focal plane. The experimental result shows that the generated beam can be expected to be applicable to super-resolving microscopy based on the fluorescence depletion process.

Two-dimensional holographic frequency-division demultiplexing using an acousto-optic modulator

Two-dimensional holographic frequency-division demultiplexing using an acousto-optic modulator is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the image multiplexing side and the demultiplexed side are connected by one optical transmission facility. By using a parallel-aligned nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (PAL-SLM) as a thin hologram, we successfully demonstrated image demultiplexing with carrier frequencies of approximately 80 MHz.

Digital phase-shifting interferometer with an electrically addressed liquid-crystal spatial light modulator.

A digital phase-shifting interferometer with a liquid-crystal-display coupled, parallel aligned, nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator is developed. The optical phase shift in the Michelson-type polarization interferometer is achieved by a digital phase shift of a grating displayed on the spatial light modulator. Accurate experimental results of using the heterodyne system for pi/2 phase steps were demonstrated. A phase-shifting interferometer with no moving parts and no requirement for calibration of the value of the phase shift was achieved.

Amplitude apodizers encoded onto Fresnel lenses implemented on a phase-only spatial light modulator

We show that both a lens and a nonuniform amplitude transmission filter can be encoded simultaneously onto a twisted nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) working in the phase-only mode. The inherent equivalent apodization that is due to the pixelated structure of the SLM is compensated for. In addition, different types of nonuniform transmission pupil such as transverse apodizing, transverse hyperresolving, and axial hyperresolving (multifocusing) filters are implemented. The excellent agreement between numerical and experimental results shows the capability of this method to encode amplitude apodizers on a phase-only SLM.

Two-pixel computer-generated hologram with a zero-twist nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator

We present a method of producing a computer-generated hologram by use of a zero-twist linear nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. A 2x1 macro pixel method is used; one pixel represents the real data, and one, the imaginary. A method is shown that produces both positive and negative analog amplitude modulation.

Phase-aberration correction with dual liquid-crystal spatial light modulators

A phase-aberration-correction system that uses high-resolution, twisted nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulators in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is presented. A correction algorithm is described and experimentally verified by use initially of one liquid-crystal panel. Phase aberrations are successfully removed by a single liquid-crystal panel, but unacceptably high amplitude variation is introduced into the wave front because of the phase-amplitude coupling of the spatial light modulator. A second panel is used to remove the amplitude modulation. The modified optical system with a multiplicative architecture is described, and results are presented that show the correction of phase aberrations with an amplitude variation of less than 10%.

Characteristics of a 128??×??128 liquid-crystal spatial light modulator for wave-front generation

Spatial and temporal characteristics of a 128x128 zero-twist nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator are investigated for wave-front generation at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The modulator is found to have the capability of producing at least eight phase levels between 0 and 2pi , and the rate of arbitrary phase modulation is limited to approximately 4.5 Hz. Wave-front generation of the first 55 Zernike polynomials is demonstrated.
