Dunn ( 1 ) stated that coefficients of equivalance for Forms A and B of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test appeared to be satisfactory for both average and mentally retarded children. The present study sought to determine alternate form reliability coefficients for the Peabody. Data were collected from 317 Negro males, 241 white males, 161 Negro females, and 151 white females ( N .= 870), ages 6 through 15 yr. and Grades 1 through 10. The children were performing poorly in school, and, as a result, were being considered for placement in classes for the educable mentally retarded. The children were from 37 integrated public schools in South Central and Southeast Alabama. Forms A and B of the Peabody were administered individually in counterbalanced order to all subjects by the same white male examiner. Mean IQs and standard deviations on the Peabody Form B were as follows: for Negro subjects, M = 67.92; SD = 11.67; for white subjects, M = 77.33; SD = 15.27; for male subjects, M = 73.60; SD = 13.83; for female subjects, M = 69.66; SD = 14.83; and for all subjects, M = 71.93; SD = 14.69. On Form A of the Peabody, mean IQs and standard deviations were as follows: for Negro subjects, M = 68.63; SD = 11.28; for white subjects, M = 77.21; SD = 14.30; for male subjects, M = 74.23; SD = 13.95; for female subjects, M = 71.71; SD = 13.69; and for the total sample, M = 73.16; SD = 14.32. Mean IQs on Form B were significantly lower ( p 6 .05) than Form A mean IQs for Negroes ( t = -2.12), whites ( t = -3.54), males ( t = -2.57), females ( t = -3.35), and for the total sample ( t = -4.21). Pearson correlation coefficients berween Form A and Form B of the Peabody were as follows: for Negroes, .85; for whites, .75; for males, 3 8 ; for females, .72; and for the total sample, .83. All rs were significant ( p L .001). For this sample, Form A of the Peabody yielded significantly higher mean IQs than did Form B. Coefficients of equivalence were comparable to others': .72 to .84 ( I ) , .84 ( 3 ) , and .86 ( 4 ) , but higher than .61 ( 2 ) .
