Effects of mind-regulating acupuncture on pain, negative emotion and sleep quality in patients with postherpetic neuralgia： a randomized controlled pilot trial.

To observe the effect of mind-regulating acupuncture on pain intensity, sleep quality, negative emotion in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), and evaluate the clinical effect of mind-regulating acupuncture combined with surrounding needling and heavy moxibustion at Ashi points (Extra) in treatment of PHN. The patients with PHN were randomly divided into a control group (35 cases, 2 cases dropped out) and a comprehensive therapy group (35 cases). The patients in the control group were treated with surrounding needling and heavy moxibustion at Ashi points. In the comprehensive therapy group, the mind-regulating acupuncture therapy was delivered besides the treatment as the control group. The treatment was given once daily, one course of treatment was composed of 6 days and 2 courses were required in the 2 groups. Before and after treatment, the pain conditions were assessed using pain rating index (PRI), visual analogue scale (VAS) and present pain intensity (PPI), the negative emotions were assessed using Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA) and Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), and the sleep quality with Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). One week before and one week after treatment, the average sleep time was recorded. The therapeutic effect of 2 groups was evaluated. The effective cases of 2 groups were followed up in 2 months after treatment completion and the recurrence of neuralgia was recorded. There were no statistical differences in the above indicators between the 2 groups before treatment. After 2 courses of treatment, the scores of PRI, VAS, PPI, HAMA, HAMD and PSQI were reduced when compared with those before treatment in the patients of the 2 groups (P<0.05), and the average sleep time was increased (P<0.05). The scores of PRI, VAS, PPI, HAMA, HAMD and PSQI in the comprehensive therapy group, as well as the average sleep time were all improved when compared with those of the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate in the comprehensive therapy group (34/35, 97.14%) was higher than that of the control group (27/33, 81.82%, P<0.05) and the recurrence rate was lower (［2/34, 5.88%］vs［8/27, 29.63%］, P<0.05). The combination of mind-regulating acupuncture with surrounding needling and heavy moxibustion at Ashi acupoint can effectively relieve PHN. Compared with the traditional surrounding acupuncture in pain area combined with moxibustion at Ashi points, this comprehensive therapy is more effective for ameliorating pain intensity, improving sleep quality and reducing negative emotions. It is also effective for declining the recurrence.

Comparative efficacy of psychological interventions on anxiety and depression in patients with cancer: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that psychological interventions are effective in alleviating anxiety and depression in patients with cancer. However, the optimal psychological intervention to alleviate anxiety and depression in patients with cancer remains unknown. This study was carried out to compare and rank the comparative effectiveness of various psychological interventions on anxiety and depression in patients with cancer. Databases, namely PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CNKI, WanFang, VIP and CBM were systematically searched from their inception dates to December 2023 for randomized controlled trials of psychological interventions for anxiety and depression in patients with cancer. Utilizing the Cochrane Review Manager 5.4, we evaluated the risk of bias in the studies included in the current study based on the Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 Methodological Quality Evaluation Criteria. The NMA was conducted using STATA 15.0. This study did not involve human participants and therefore did not require ethical approval. Thirty-one randomized controlled trials involving 3471 participants were included. MT [SMD = 1.35, 95% CI (0.76, 1.93)] and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) [SMD = 0.97, 95% CI (0.53, 1.42)] were superior to usual care in alleviating anxiety. Besides, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) [SMD = 1.17, 95% CI (0.06, 2.28)], CBT [SMD = 0.97, 95 % CI (0.63, 1.30)], and MT [SMD = 0.93, 95% CI (0.35, 1.50)] were superior to usual care in alleviating depression. In addition, CBT was superior to family therapy in alleviating depression [SMD = 0.73, 95% CI (0.08, 1.38)]. The MT, CBT, and IPT ranked in the top three in alleviating anxiety, while IPT, CBT, and MT ranked in the top three in alleviating depression. MT and IPT would be a more appropriate option in alleviating anxiety and depression in patients with cancer, respectively. This study also suggested that CBT had a significant effect in alleviating negative emotions in patients with cancer. However, the results need to be validated by high-quality and large-sample studies.

Respiratory symptom perception during exercise in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

We investigated whether central or peripheral limitations to oxygen uptake elicit different respiratory sensations and whether dyspnea on exertion (DOE) provokes unpleasantness and negative emotions in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). 48 patients were categorized based on their cardiac output (Q̇c)/oxygen uptake (V̇O2) slope and stroke volume (SV) reserve during an incremental cycling test. 15 were classified as centrally limited and 33 were classified as peripherally limited. Ratings of perceived breathlessness (RPB) and unpleasantness (RPU) were assessed (Borg 0–10 scale) during a 20 W cycling test. 15 respiratory sensations statements (1–10 scale) and 5 negative emotions statements (1−10) were subsequently rated. RPB (Central: 3.5±2.0 vs. Peripheral: 3.4±2.0, p=0.86), respiratory sensations, or negative emotions were not different between groups (p>0.05). RPB correlated (p<0.05) with RPU (r=0.925), “anxious” (r=0.610), and “afraid” (r=0.383). While DOE provokes elevated levels of negative emotions, DOE and respiratory sensations seem more related to a common mechanism rather than central and/or peripheral limitations in HFpEF.

The white matter characteristic of the genu of corpus callosum coupled with pain intensity and negative emotion scores in patients with trigeminal neuralgia: a multivariate analysis.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a chronic neuropathic pain disorder that not only causes intense pain but also affects the psychological health of patients. Since TN pain intensity and negative emotion may be grounded in our own pain experiences, they exhibit huge inter-individual differences. This study investigates the effect of inter-individual differences in pain intensity and negative emotion on brain structure in patients with TN and the possible pathophysiology mechanism underlying this disease. T1 weighted magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging scans were obtained in 46 patients with TN and 35 healthy controls. All patients with TN underwent pain-related and emotion-related questionnaires. Voxel-based morphometry and regional white matter diffusion property analysis were used to investigate whole brain grey and white matter quantitatively. Innovatively employing partial least squares correlation analysis to explore the relationship among pain intensity, negative emotion and brain microstructure in patients with TN. Significant difference in white matter integrity were identified in patients with TN compared to the healthy controls group; The most correlation brain region in the partial least squares correlation analysis was the genus of the corpus callosum, which was negatively associated with both pain intensity and negative emotion. The genu of corpus callosum plays an important role in the cognition of pain perception, the generation and conduction of negative emotions in patients with TN. These findings may deepen our understanding of the pathophysiology of TN.

Intervention model under the Omaha system framework can effectively improve the sleep quality and negative emotion of patients with mid to late-stage lung cancer and is a protective factor for quality of life.

This study aims to evaluate the effects of Omaha System framework interventions on quality of life, emotional well-being, and sleep quality in 507 mid to late-stage lung cancer patients. Retrospectively, we compared data of 294 patients receiving conventional care (conventional group) with 213 patients undergoing Omaha System interventions (intervention group) from January 2019 to January 2023. Key indicators included quality of life (FACT-L), anxiety (SAS), depression (SDS), sleep quality (PSQI), hope (HHS), and dignity (PDI). Post-intervention, the intervention group showed a significant increase in FACT-L scores (P<0.001), indicating enhanced quality of life. There was a notable reduction in PSQI scores (P<0.001), suggesting improved sleep quality. Additionally, their anxiety and depression levels significantly decreased, as evidenced by lower SAS (P<0.001) and SDS scores (P<0.001). Logistic regression revealed that care nursing intervention scheme (P=0.007), age (P=0.008), marital status (P=0.002), per capita monthly household income (P=0.004), SAS after intervention (P=0.002), and PSQI after intervention (P=0.002) had a positive influence on quality of life. In conclusion, the Omaha System interventions markedly improved the quality of life, emotional state, and sleep in lung cancer patients.

Analysis of the Risk Factors for Negative Emotions in Patients with Esophageal Cancer During the Peri-Radiotherapy Period and Their Effects on Malnutrition.

Esophageal cancer has a high incidence in China. Many patients also have a heavy psychological burden due to clinical features such as wasting and choking on food. This study analyzed the risk factors of negative emotions in esophageal cancer patients during the peri-radiotherapy period and its effects on malnutrition. We retrospectively analyzed 339 patients with esophageal cancer during the peri-radiotherapy who received treatment at our hospital from April 2017 to April 2020, and followed up for 3 years. t test and Chi-square test were used to analyze the relationship between patients' negative emotions and clinical data. Binary logistics regression was performed to analyze the independent risk factors for the occurrence of negative mood and malnutrition in the patients. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to analyze survival rates. Our results showed that 18.3% of patients undergoing radiotherapy for esophageal cancer had negative emotions, and 41.9% suffered from malnutrition. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis showed that monthly household income (OR=0.470, P =0.022), the TNM stage (OR=2.030, P =0.044), concomitant gastrointestinal symptoms (OR=2.071, P =0.024), sleep status (OR=2.540, P =0.003), swallowing disorders (OR=1.919, P = 0.048), and post-radiotherapy complications were independent risk factors for the development of negative emotions in patients. Negative emotions (OR=2.547, P =0.038) were also a risk factor for malnutrition in patients with esophageal cancer. Many patients with esophageal cancer suffer from anxiety and depression in the peri-radiotherapy period, which might lead to complications such as malnutrition or aggravate and affect the prognosis of patients. Therefore, psychological care should be provided based on conventional care to effectively relieve their psychological pressure, and improve their prognosis and quality of life.

Risk Factors for Negative Emotions in Patients Undergoing Radical Resection of Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma and Their Influence on Prognosis.

Hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCCA) is a common malignant tumor of the biliary system. Factors such as limited physical function, intractability, and high mortality caused by the tumor lead to negative emotions, such as anxiety and depression in patients. In this study, we investigated the risk factors for negative emotions in patients undergoing radical resection of HCCA during the perioperative period and its effect on prognosis to provide strategies for alleviating the negative emotional disorders of patients and improving prognosis. From September 2016 to August 2021, we retrospectively examined 205 patients with HCCA who underwent radical resection in our hospital. The incidence of negative emotions and the clinical parameters of patients were compared using Chi-square tests and t-tests. The independent risk factors for unfavorable feelings in patients during the perioperative period were determined using binary logistic regression. The key variables influencing the postoperative survival status of HCCA patients were identified using the log-rank univariate analysis and Cox proportional risk regression analysis. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis showed that perioperative negative emotions were independently influenced by family monthly income (OR = 0.069), medical insurance (OR = 0.089), family care (OR = 0.013), sleep quality (OR = 0.071), TNF-α (OR = 5.851), and bile leakage (OR = 29.412) (P < 0.05). The age of the patient (OR = 2.003), preoperative CA19-9 (OR = 2.038), lymph node metastases (OR = 2.327), and negative mood (OR = 3.054) were independent risk variables that affected the survival status of patients, as determined by the results of Cox regression analysis (P < 0.05). In this study, we found that anxiety and depression in patients undergoing radical operation of HCCA are related to family monthly income, medical insurance, sleep quality, family care, TNF-α, and bile leakage; also, negative emotions have adverse effects on prognosis.

Clinical Impact of Risk Pre-warning Nursing Model Combined with Early Nasojejunal Enteral Nutrition on Nutritional Status, Neurological Function and Negative Emotions in Patients with Severe Stroke

The present study aimed to clarify the practical implications of implementing a risk pre-warning nursing model combined with early nasojejunal enteral nutrition in patients with severe stroke. One hundred patients with severe stroke treated at the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, Nantong City, China between January 2022 and June 2023 were recruited. The control group received early enteral nutrition support and conventional nursing, whereas the experimental group was subjected to a risk pre-warning nursing model. After the intervention, the serum albumin, prealbumin, and total protein levels were higher in the experimental group than in the control group. However, the experimental group demonstrated shorter bowel sound recovery, anal exhaust, and anal defecation times. The incidence of complications was lower in the experimental group (4.0%) than in the control group (18.0%). The experimental group exhibited a reduction in intensive care unit hospitalization time, total hospitalization time, and expenses than the control group. The National Institute of Health stroke scale, self-rating depression scale, and self-rating anxiety scale scores were lower in the experimental group than in the control group. In conclusion, early nasojejunal nutrition with risk pre-warning nursing model can improve nutritional status and gastrointestinal function, regulate neurological function, alleviate negative emotions, reduce complications, and shorten the hospital stay of patients with severe stroke.

Effects of low-level laser therapy on burning pain and quality of life in patients with burning mouth syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundBurning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a complex chronic pain disorder that significantly impairs patients' quality of life. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) uses infrared or near-infrared light to produce analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and biological stimulation effects. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the effect of LLLT on burning pain, quality of life, and negative emotions in patients with BMS.MethodsThe PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched up January 2023 to identify relevant articles. All randomized controlled trials that were published in English and examined the use of LLLT treatment for BMS were included. The methodological quality of the included trials was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate burning pain, quality of life, and negative emotions. Sensitivity, subgroup, and funnel plot analyses were also carried out.ResultsFourteen RCTs involving a total of 550 patients with BMS met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that LLLT (measured by the Visual Analog Scale; SMD: -0.87, 95% CI: -1.29 to -0.45, P < 0.001) was more effective for reducing burning pain than placebo LLLT or clonazepam. LLLT improved quality of life (evaluated by the Oral Health Impact Profile-14; SMD: 0.01, 95% CI: -0.58 to 0.60, P = 0.97) and negative emotions (evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; SMD: -0.12, 95% CI: -0.54 to 0.30, P = 0.59), but these effects were not statistically significant.ConclusionsThe meta-analysis revealed that LLLT may be an effective therapy for improving burning pain in patients with BMS, and producing a positive influence on quality of life and negative emotions. A long-term course of intervention, a larger sample size, and a multidisciplinary intervention design are urgently needed in future research.Trial registrationPROSPERO registration number: CRD42022308770.

Nursing measures in the fast-track surgery on negative emotions in breast cancer patients: A meta-analysis.

To critically evaluate the effects of different nursing measures based on the concept of fast-track surgery (FTS) on the negative emotions of patients with breast cancer. A systematic search of 8 databases, namely PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Psycho info, China national knowledge infrastructure, Wanfang, China science and technology journal database, and China biomedical literature database, was performed to find randomized controlled trials from inception to April 2023. Two reviewers critically and independently assessed the risk of bias using Cochrane Collaboration criteria and extracted correlated data using the designed form. All analyses were performed with Review Manager 5.3. Ten studies were included in the systematic review, with a total of 830 patients (FTS group: 415; control group: 415). The results showed that different nursing measures based on the concept of FTS could significantly reduce anxiety (MD = -1.74, 95% confidence intervals [-2.41, -1.08], P < .00001) and depression (MD = -1.98, 95% confidence intervals [-2.44, -1.51], P < .00001) in patients after modified breast cancer surgery compared with the control group. Based on the concept of FTS, the nursing measures such as reducing preoperative fasting time, posture management, preventive analgesia, and early functional exercise can effectively reduce the anxiety and depression of patients during the perioperative period.

Interplay between negative symptoms, time spent doing nothing, and negative emotions in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: results from a 37-site study

This study evaluated the relationship between negative symptoms, daily time use (productive/non-productive activities, PA/NPA), and negative emotions in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSDs): 618 individuals with SSDs (311 residential care patients [RCPs], 307 outpatients) were surveyed about socio-demographic, clinical (BPRS, BNSS) and daily time use (paper-and-pencil Time Use Survey completed twice/week) characteristics. Among them 57 RCPs and 46 outpatients, matched to 112 healthy controls, also underwent ecological monitoring of emotions (8 times/day for a week) through Experience Sampling Method (ESM). RCPs spent significantly less time in PA than outpatients. Patients with more negative symptomatology spent more time in NPA and less in PA compared to patients with milder symptoms. Higher time spent in NPA was associated with negative emotions (p < 0.001 during workdays) even when correcting for BNSS total and antipsychotic polypharmacy (p = 0.002 for workdays, p = 0.006 for Sundays). Future studies are needed to explore in more detail the relationship between negative emotions, negative symptoms, time use, and functioning in individuals with SSDs, providing opportunities for more informed and personalised clinical treatment planning and research into interactions between different motivational, saliency and behavioural aspects in individuals with SSDs.

Association Between Activity Pacing and Negative Emotions in Patients With Chronic Pain: A Systematic Review.

Chronic pain is a major health problem given its high prevalence and its multiple consequences on the physical and psychological functioning of patients. It is therefore important to determine the relation between these consequences and pain management strategies such as activity pacing. This review aimed to examine the association between activity pacing and the level of negative emotions in chronic pain. A second objective was to explore sex differences in this association. A systematic review of the literature was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Three independent reviewers used a combination of keywords within four databases to include studies examining the link between pacing and negative emotions in chronic pain. Results showed that pacing was associated with less negative emotions when measured using multidimensional tools, distinguishing it from avoidance, and highlighting the major components of pacing such as maintaining a constant activity or conserving energy. Data did not allow examination of sex differences. Pacing is multidimensional and consists of various strategies of pain management which are not equally associated with negative emotions. It is important to use measures reflecting this conception to strengthen knowledges about the role of pacing in the development of negative emotions.

Therapists' oxytocin response mediates the association between patients' negative emotions and psychotherapy outcomes

BackgroundExisting literature suggests that patients' experiences of emotions, especially negative emotions, predict outcomes in psychotherapies for major depressive disorder. However, the specific mechanisms underlying this effect remain unclear. Based on studies pointing to the role of oxytocin (OT) in attachment relationships, we proposed and tested a mediation model where the therapists' hormonal responses, as represented by increases in their OT levels, mediates the association between negative emotions and symptomatic change. MethodOT saliva samples (pre- and post-session, N = 435) were collected on a fixed schedule over 16 sessions from the therapists of 62 patients receiving psychotherapy for major depression. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression was administered to the patients before the sessions, and the patients reported their in-session emotions after the sessions. ResultsThe findings support the proposed within-person mediation model: (a) higher levels of negative emotions in patients predicted greater increases in therapist OT levels pre- to post-session throughout treatment; (b) greater OT levels in therapists, in turn, predicted reduction in patients' depressive symptoms on the subsequent assessment; and (c) the therapists' OT levels significantly mediated the association between patients' negative emotions and reduction in their depressive symptoms. LimitationsThis design precluded establishing a time sequence between patients' negative emotions and therapists' OT; thus, causality could not be inferred. ConclusionThese findings point to a possible biological mechanism underlying the effects of patients' experiences of negative emotions on treatment outcomes. The findings suggest that therapists' OT responses could potentially serve as a biomarker of an effective therapeutic processes.

Effect of targeted responsibility system nursing combined with psychological intervention on compliance and complications of patients with autologous nasal septum and ear cartilage transplantation.

The purpose was to explore the effect of targeted responsibility system nursing combined with psychological intervention on compliance and complications of patients with autologous nasal septum cartilage and ear cartilage transplantation filling. A retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 80 patients who underwent rhinoplasty with autologous septal cartilage and ear cartilage graft filling was conducted. Patients before the implementation of the "targeted accountable care combined with psychological intervention" program from January 2020 to December 2020 were set up as the control group (N.=40), and patients after the implementation of the program from January 2021 to December 2021 were set up as the study group (N.=40). The Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Lund-Kennedy Endoscopy Score, Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), treatment compliance, and complications were compared between the two groups. At two weeks postoperatively, HAMA and HAMD were lower in the study group than in the control group (t=9.087, 9.265, P<0.05), and bilateral Lund-Kennedy scores were lower in the study group than in the control group (t=8.761, 10.267, P<0.05). The study group had a higher compliance excellence rate (75.00% vs. 52.50%) than the control group (χ2=4.021, P<0.05) and a lower complication rate (7.50% vs. 27.50%) than the control group (χ2=4.242, P<0.05). Targeted accountable care combined with psychological intervention can alleviate negative emotions in patients with nasal septum cartilage and ear cartilage graft filling, reduce the risk of postoperative soft tissue edema and other complications, and improve patient compliance with treatment.

Analysis of risk factors for negative emotions in patients with severe pneumonia and their impact on prognosis.

Severe pneumonia (SP) is a common acute and critical illness in internal medicine, with typical symptoms such as cough, fever, generalized aches and pains, loss of appetite, weakness, and shortness of breath. Patients feel threatened by the disease and are prone to negative emotions, resulting in reduced compliance with treatment, which in turn affects treatment outcome. The purpose of this study is to analyze the risk factors of negative emotions in patients with SP and their impact on prognosis, to provide a reference basis for improving the prognosis of patients. We retrospectively analyzed 243 patients with SP admitted to our hospital from June 2017 to June 2021. The general characteristics of the study subjects were compiled using a general information questionnaire designed by the researcher. The t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square test were used to analyze the relationship between the negative emotions of patients and prognosis. Binary logistic regression and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the independent risk factors for the occurrence of negative emotions and poor prognosis. Binary logistic regression analysis showed gender, fertility or not, spouse or not, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score, and complications such as infectious shock and hemoptysis were independent risk factors for anxiety, whereas a history of underlying disease, monthly household income, fertility or not, spouse or not, APACHE II score, and complications such as bronchodilation and hemoptysis were independent risk factors for depression. Multiple linear regression analysis showed albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), duration of mechanical ventilation, and negative emotions were independent risk factors for patient prognosis. SP patients have serious conditions and are prone to complications and psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression, which affect treatment outcome. Therefore, the negative emotions of patients and independent risk factors should be identified in a timely manner in clinical work, and targeted and effective measures should be actively taken to improve the prognosis of patients.

Factors Determining the Level of Acceptance of Illness and Satisfaction with Life in Patients with Cancer.

Cancer threatens life and brings about many negative emotions in patients, which influence their satisfaction with life and contribute to a low level of their acceptance of illness. This is why the acceptance of illness is a serious problem among patients with cancer; contributes to the intensification of symptoms; and influences the patient's physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual condition. The purpose of this work is to assess the acceptance of illness and satisfaction with life in patients with cancer, as well as to identify social, demographical, and clinical factors that significantly differentiate their acceptance of illness and satisfaction with life. The study involved 120 patients with cancer aged 18 to 88. The study was conducted in the form of a questionnaire based on standard research tools: Acceptance of Illness (AIS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Social, demographical, and clinical data were collected in the original questionnaire. A group of 120 patients was studied, including 55.83% (n = 67) women and 44.16% (n = 53) men. The average age was 56. A general acceptance-of-illness index obtained by the patients was 21.6 ± 7.32 and a general satisfaction-with-life index was 19.14 ± 5.78. The statistical analysis indicated a significant correlation between the acceptance of illness and the intensity of pain (rHO = -0.19; p < 0.05), fatigue ((Z = 1.92; p > 0.05), and diarrhoea (t(118) = 2.54; p < 0.05). The correlation between the intensity of pain and satisfaction with life was negative (rHO = -0.20; p < 0.05). The greater acceptance of illness, the greater satisfaction with life in patients with cancer. Pain, fatigue, and diarrhoea decrease the acceptance of illness. In addition, pain decreases the level of satisfaction with life. Social and demographical factors do not determine the level of acceptance of illness and satisfaction with life.

Awareness of Dysphagia-Related Complications and Risks and the Importance of Early Intervention in Patients with Parkinson's Disease: A Qualitative Study.

To investigate the awareness of dysphagia-related complications and risks and the importance of early intervention in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Using the phenomenological approach of the qualitative study, 18 patients with PD in a Grade A tertiary hospital in Nantong were selected, and semistructured personal in-depth interviews were conducted. The interview content was analyzed using Colaizzi's seven-step method, and the topics and subtopics were further refined. Awareness of dysphagia-related complications and risks and the importance of early intervention in patients with PD can be summarized into three topics: lack of knowledge about PD and dysphagia, changes in emotional cognition, and low need for early intervention for dysphagia. Patients with PD have a low awareness of dysphagia, do not follow any preventative measures, and have difficulty in recognizing the disease symptoms; hence, there is a vital need for early intervention. Medical staff need to create awareness among patients and their families, provide health education through multiple channels, popularize the knowledge of PD complications such as dysphagia, improve patient compliance with respect to medication, regular consultation, and medical treatment, guide the transformation of negative emotions in patients to positive emotions, and help patients with PD to actively prevent dysphagia and other complications and improve their quality of life.
