This paper presents a comprehensive review of natural fiber-reinforced composites (NFRCs) for lower-limb prosthetic designs. It covers the characteristics, types, and properties of natural fiber-reinforced composites as well as their advantages and drawbacks in prosthetic designs. This review also discusses successful prosthetic designs that incorporate NFRCs and the factors that make them effective. Additionally, this study explores the use of computational biomechanical models to evaluate the effectiveness of prosthetic devices and the key factors that are considered. Overall, this document provides a valuable resource for anyone interested in using NFRCs for lower-limb prosthetic designs.

Acoustics characterization of reinforced composite for noise reduction

These days, noise pollution is becoming worse due to the faster globalisation of nations, and its effects on human health go beyond hearing impairment. As a result, effective noise pollution control methods are needed. Use a composite reinforced with natural fibres for acoustical purposes. Natural fiber-reinforced composites have several benefits, such as being inexpensive, simple to produce, and eco-friendly. Additionally, natural fibre improves composite sound absorption, structural stability, and mechanical durability. The methods for assessing the acoustical properties of composites improved by natural fibres are described in the paper. Acoustical measures, such as sound transmission losses and absorption efficiency, are also evaluated. This work also examines a factor that influences the mechanical and acoustical properties of composites reinforced with natural fibres. The variables that determine the outcome include the fiber’s characteristics, density, sample thickness, porosity, adhesive material, and filler substance. Increases in the percentage of fibre weight, binder material, and filler material improve the durability and sound absorption of natural fiber-reinforced composites.

Sustainable seedling pots: Development and characterisation of banana waste and natural fibre-reinforced composites for horticultural applications

Plastic pots used in horticultural nurseries generate substantial waste, causing environmental pollution. This study aimed to develop biodegradable composites from banana pseudo-stem reinforced with agricultural residues like pineapple leaves, taro and water hyacinth as eco-friendly substitutes. The aim of this study is to develop optimised banana biocomposite formulations with suitable reinforcements that balance mechanical durability, biodegradation, and seedling growth promotion properties to serve as viable eco-friendly alternatives to plastic seedling pots. This study was carried out by fabricating banana fibre mats through pulping, drying and hot pressing. Composite sheets were reinforced with 50 % pineapple, taro or water hyacinth fibres. The mechanical properties (tensile, yield strength, elongation, bursting strength), hydrophilicity (contact angle, water absorption), biodegradability (soil burial test), and seedling growth promotion were evaluated through appropriate testing methods. The results show that banana-taro composites exhibited suitable tensile strength (25 MPa), elongation (27 %), water uptake (41 %) and 82 % biodegradation in 60 days. It was observed that biodegradable seedling trays fabricated from banana-taro composite showed 95 % tomato seed germination and a 125 cm plant height increase in 30 days, superior to plastic trays. The finding shows that the study demonstrates the potential of banana-taro biocomposites as alternatives to plastic nursery pots, enabling healthy seedling growth while eliminating plastic waste pollution through biodegradation.

A comprehensive review on: Mechanical and acoustical characterization of natural fiber-reinforced composite

In our modern era of rapid development, the issue of noise pollution has become increasingly pressing. This relentless surge in noise pollution has brought about significant adverse effects on human health, extending beyond just auditory concerns. To combat this escalating problem, it becomes imperative to explore innovative solutions, such as the utilization of natural fiber-reinforced composites in acoustical applications. These composites offer environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and enhanced mechanical and sound-absorbing qualities. In the context of this review, we examine various methods for evaluating both the mechanical and acoustical attributes of these composites. We examine significant acoustical metrics, including the sound absorption coefficient, sound transmission losses, and noise reflection coefficient, as well as mechanical aspects encompassing tensile, flexural, impact strengths, and hardness. Moreover, this comprehensive review delves into the realm of influencing parameters, which exert a notable impact on the mechanical and acoustical characteristics of natural fiber-reinforced composites. A range of variables is encompassed by these influencing parameters, including fiber properties, binder-filler amount, specimen thickness, etc. It is worth noting that manipulating these parameters can yield significant enhancements in mechanical strength and sound absorption. However, it is crucial to recognize and respect certain limitations to avoid adverse effects. In conclusion, this review emphasizes the importance of carefully considering these performance-influencing parameters to optimize the mechanical and acoustical attributes of natural fiber-reinforced composites. By doing so, we can fully harness the potential of these composites to address the challenges posed by escalating noise pollution effectively.

Influence of Alkali Treatment on Bamboo/Coconut Husk Hybrid Fibre Polyester Composite

This research addresses the importance of hybrid composites in material science, specifically, demonstrating the effective reinforcement of unsaturated polyester with bamboo and coconut husk fibre through alkali treatment. The primary problem this work aims to solve is the improvement of the mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester by combining it with bamboo and coconut husk fibres which contain both lignocellulosic and cellulose fibres. Alkali treatment, particularly, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, was used in this study due to its cost-effective nature and its ability to enhance the strength of both individual fibres and resulting composite. The effect of NaOH treatment with concentrations ranging from 2 – 10 wt.% on dried hybrid fibres was investigated. Chemically treated fibre composites were discovered to have improved mechanical characteristics as both tensile tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed higher strength and thermal stability after being treated. Notably, findings identified an optimal content of 8 wt.% NaOH solution for surface modification, showcasing the potential for using NaOH-treated waste fibres to reinforce polyester resin. The implications of this study extend to a promising avenue for enhancing the performance and application of natural fibre-reinforced composites. The insights provided here offer a foundation for advancing the utilization of hybrid composites.

Mechanical properties and design of hybrid composites of carbon and jute fibers with polypropylene

Natural fibers have both environmentally friendly and ecological advantages in the fiber material industry. Improving the mechanical properties and durability of natural fiber composites is an important research approach. As one of the representatives of synthetic fibers, carbon fiber has excellent mechanical properties and chemical stability, but its high cost and low toughness limit further application. Combining environmentally friendly, low-cost natural fibers with carbon fibers can broaden the development of natural fiber-reinforced composites in industrial applications. In this paper, the composites made of jute fibers and polypropylene (PP) as well as carbon fibers coupled with KH550 modification were prepared and their properties were investigated. By introducing a macroscopic model similar to the core-shell structure, an environmentally friendly material with better mechanical properties was achieved, with carbon fiber woven fabric serving as the shell and jute fiber mat as the core. The results show that a low-cost hybrid composite was successfully prepared by using a small amount of carbon fiber woven fabric instead of jute fiber mat, and the tensile, flexural and impact properties of the composites were improved by 488.27%, 70.75% and 463.39%, respectively, compared with those of the pure jute fibers composites. This study provides a rapid and reliable approach to improve the mechanical properties of the natural fiber composites.

Modeling and analysis of TiO2 filler's impact on specific wear rate in flax fiber-reinforced epoxy composite under abrasive wear using Taguchi approach

PurposeThis study explores how titanium oxide (TiO2) filler influences the specific wear rate (SWR) in flax fiber-reinforced epoxy composites (FFRCs) through a Taguchi approach. It aims to boost abrasive wear resistance by incorporating TiO2 filler, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly materials.Design/methodology/approachThis study fabricates epoxy/flax composites with TiO2 particles (0–8 wt%) using hand layup. Composites were tested for wear following American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) G99-05. Statistical analysis used Taguchi design of experiments (DOE), with ANOVA identifying key factors affecting SWR in abrasive sliding conditions.FindingsThe study illuminates how integrating TiO2 filler particles into epoxy/flax composites enhances abrasive wear properties. Statistical analysis of SWR highlights abrasive grit size (grit) as the most influential factor, followed by normal load, wt% of TiO2 and sliding distance. Grit size has the highest effect at 43.78%, and wt% TiO2 filler contributes 15.61% to SWR according to ANOVA. Notably, the Taguchi predictive model closely aligns with experimental results, validating its reliability.Originality/valueThis paper integrates TiO2 filler and flax fibers to form a novel hybrid composite with enhanced tribological properties in epoxy composites. The use of Taguchi DOE and ANOVA offers valuable insights for optimizing control variables, particularly in natural fiber-reinforced composites (NFRCs).

Analysis of the Effects of Fiber Loading on the Mechanical Behavior of Jute Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites

Natural fiber-reinforced composites are becoming a growing trend because of their affordability, sustainability, abundant natural source, and minimal environmental effect. It has also shown to be an effective replacement of synthetic fiber, particularly in the transportation and construction sectors as ceiling, paneling, partition etc. In this study the jute fiber (Hessian Cloth) reinforced (10% to 50% fiber content by weight) Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE) composite were made by compression molding technique to understand the effect of fiber loading on mechanical properties of two different thermoplastic composite materials. For jute fabric-reinforced thermoplastic composites, it was discovered that with 30 % fiber loading with PP and PE yielded the best results. It was found that the mechanical properties of the composites enhanced significantly with 30 % fiber content with PP and PE thermoplastic matrixes in contrast to 10% and 20% fiber content composites. However, increasing the fiber content over 30%, dramatically decrease the mechanical properties of the composite samples. The relationship between Tensile Strength (TS), Bending Strength (BS), Impact Strength (IS) and Tensile Modulus (TM), Bending Modulus (BM) was examined, along with water resistance properties for both composites. Additionally, the jute-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composite showed superior mechanical capabilities compared to the jute-polyethylene (PE) composite. This suggests that it could be a suitable replacement for the toy manufacturing, home or garden furniture, automotive and interior construction industries in the future.

Fabrication and Physico-mechanical Characterization of Short Natural/Synthetic Fiber–Reinforced Hybrid Composites: Effects of Biodegradation and Chemical Aging

The main goal of this study was to develop eco-friendly and low-cost multiple short natural fiber-reinforced hybrid composites with the hybridization of comparatively high-strength glass fibers. The hybrid composites were fabricated via hand lay-up by using short jute, silk, water hyacinth, and glass fibers for the reinforcements and unsaturated polyester resin for the thermoset polymer matrix. The reinforcing fibers were randomly oriented, and five types of hybrid composites were fabricated with different types of fiber content (wt.%). The performance of the manufactured hybrid composites was assessed by tensile, flexural, and impact testing, as well as water uptake (%). It was revealed that composites with high glass fiber content (wt.%) exhibited optimum mechanical performance in most cases, while poor moisture resistance performance was exhibited for the hybrid composites containing higher natural fibers (wt.%). The hybrid composite samples were also aged in soil medium (biodegradation) for 25 days and different chemical solutions (alkaline, acidic, and salt) for 10 days. After biodegradation, the drop of tensile strength (TS) and tensile modulus (TM) was revealed to be approximately 38–61 and 58–72%, respectively. On the other hand, after chemical aging, the drop of TS and TM was exhibited to be approximately 49–76% and 51–65%, respectively, for alkali solution aging; 42–75% and 29–76%, respectively, for acid solution aging; and 43–59% and 51–65%, respectively, for salt solution aging.

Homogenised strength criterion for natural fibre-reinforced composite

A representative model for multilayer natural fibre composite (NFC) plates is introduced to investigate its homogenised strength criterion. A three-layer NFC plate model is used to analyse the local stress–strain characteristics in multi-layered NFC. Finite element analysis (FEA) is performed on the representative volume element (RVE) under various boundary conditions to investigate stress and strain at macroscopic and microscopic levels. The explicit assessment of homogenised strength requires calculating stress tensors and equivalent stresses to determine parameter values. The precise specification of homogenised strength requirements assists in comprehending the material's behaviour under various loading conditions, which affects composite application design and optimisation techniques. The study examined the effect of fibre orientation angles on NFC's mechanical behaviour. The results demonstrate that flax fibres have comparatively higher stress levels than coir fibres. This study improves the understanding of natural fibre laminate composites’ macroscopic and microscopic behaviours, that is, the material's response under different loadings. The definition of homogenised strength criterion on NFC improves their design evaluations.

Bamboo fiber reinforced poly (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic)/chlorinated polyethylene via compabilization

In the quest to enhance the performance of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites, achieving optimal dispersion of fiber materials within a polymeric matrix has been identified as a key strategy. Traditional approaches, such as the surface modification of natural fibers, often necessitate the use of additional synthetic chemical processes, presenting a significant challenge. In this work, taking poly (acrylonitrile–styrene–acrylic) (ASA) and bamboo fiber (BF) as a model system, we attempt to use the elastomer-chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) as a compatibilizer to tailor the mechanical properties of ASA/CPE/BF ternary composites. It was found that increasing CPE content contributed to more remarkable reinforcing efficiency, where composite with 15 phr CPE exhibited a nearly four-fold increase in reinforcing efficiency of tensile strength (20 %) compared with that of composite system without CPE (4.1 %). Such improvement was ascribed to the compatibilizing effect exerted by CPE, which prevented the aggregation of BF within polymeric matrix. Surface properties suggested the stronger interface between CPE and BF compared to that between ASA and BF and thereby contributed to the compabilizing effect. Since no chemical process was involved, it is suggested that the introduction of elastomer to be a universal, green and sustainable approach to achieve the reinforcement.

Sustainable activation of sisal fiber-reinforced slag composites: Mechanical strength and microstructural insights through recycling of alkali-treated wastewaters

An alkali treatment is necessary for natural plant fibers employed as reinforcing additives in inorganic cementitious materials, aiming to diminish moisture sensitivity and facilitate interlocking between the matrix and additives. Recycling alkali-treated fiber wastewaters (ATFWs) is crucial to prevent significant environmental pollution. Sisal fiber (SF)-reinforced alkali-activated slag-based composites incorporating ATFWs were prepared and compared to the control, aiming to investigate the effects of alkali-treated SFs and recycled ATFWs on the long-term mechanical properties and microstructures. Initially, the influence of the treated duration of SFs was examined on the electrical conductivity (EC) of ATFWs. Subsequently, the effects of SFs and ATFWs on the 28-day and 360-day flexural and compressive strengths were investigated, including an observation of failure modes. Furthermore, the effect mechanism of ATFWs in SF-reinforced composites was detected concerning morphology, microstructure, and composition by using diverse analytical techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Thermogravimetric-Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG-DSC). The results show that the inclusion of ATFWs diminishes electrical conductivity (EC) and density while augmenting the flexural and compressive strengths of the composites. When extending the treatment duration of SFs in a 10% NaOH solution from 1 hour to 3 hours for SF-reinforced composites, the 360-day flexural and compressive strengths for samples without SFs show an enhancement of 1.1 times and 0.9 times, those with 1% SFs exhibit an increase of 0.7 times and 0.5 times, and those with 2% SFs demonstrate an improvement of 0.3 times and 0.4 times, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of ATFWs enables the physical embedding and sequestration of organic components released from SFs in a matrix without local aggregation. Therefore, recycling ATFWs as an alkaline activator is deemed feasible to produce SF-reinforced SP-based composites. The research outcomes offer an innovative approach for whole-waste utilization in the realm of natural fiber-reinforced composites.

Exploring the use of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites in electronic circuit boards

Sustainable banana fiber has become potential alternative reinforcement materials instead of synthetic fibers for the development of the polymer composites. These natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites can be utilized for numerous applications. The current study aims to fabricate the epoxy/banana fiber composites under varying fraction of banana fibers. Compression molding process was employed to fabricate the composites since it is frequently used for production of large-scale composite parts like automotive components. Various weight percentages of banana fiber (50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% by weight) and epoxy (50%, 40%, 30%, and 20% by weight) were utilized for the development of the composites. Results revealed that the combination of the epoxy (40 wt. %)/banana fiber (60%) has the higher tensile strength of 22.67 MPa, flexural strength of 39.56 MPa, impact strength of 2.97 kJ/m2, and Barcol hardness of 35.24 among the various combinations of the epoxy and banana fiber composites. This work highlights the viability of sustainable materials within the materials engineering field, promoting the development of eco-friendly alternatives in composite fabrication.

Adapting a phenomenological model for predicting acoustical behaviour of Camellia sinensis/Ananas comosus/E-glass fibre-blended epoxy hybrid composites

Developing a hybrid phenomenological model for predicting the sound absorption coefficient of a pineapple leaf fibre/waste tea leaf fibre/glass fibre/epoxy-based natural fibre-reinforced hybrid composites is the predominant topic of this article. Phenomenological models excel at extrapolating characteristic impedance and wave number whereas empirical models require fewer inputs but overlook wave propagation in pores. Existing models apply only to single-fibre-reinforced composites, necessitating the creation of a hybrid model for hybrid composites. The developed hybrid Zwikker–Kosten and Johnson–Champoux–Allard model shows good agreement with experimental data across the frequency range, with standard deviations of 0.001–0.029 and percent deviations of 1.11%–11.43%. The overall noise reduction coefficient between the model and experiments is 0.31 vs. 0.30, with a 3.33% deviation. Furthermore, the application of alkali treatment increased the surface roughness which in turn, enhanced the sound absorption capabilities of these composites. The increased fibre roughness also amplified friction between fibres and sound waves, resulting in higher sound absorption coefficients. In addition, X-ray diffraction, thermal stability (thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry), and scanning electron microscopy examinations were performed on the designated composition (5% by weight of pineapple leaf fibre and 25% by weight of waste tea leaf fibre) of the pineapple leaf fibre/waste tea leaf fibre/glass fibre/epoxy-based natural fibre-reinforced hybrid composite.

Experimental investigation on mechanical performance and drilling behavior of hybrid polymer composites through statistical and machine learning approach

The current study focuses on fabricating partially biodegradable composites added with nettle and grewia optiva fibers in epoxy. The mechanical properties of various fiber reinforcement combinations, such as tensile, impact, and flexural strength were evaluated. One of the main issues when drilling natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites is delamination damage. Therefore, the drilling ability of the hybrid composites was investigated by various drilling operation conditions: drill diameter (4, 6, 8 mm), feed rate (0.125, 0.212, 0.3 mm/rev) and spindle speed (400, 600, 800 rev/min). The experimental investigation was carried out using a twist drill at dry and ambient temperatures. The response surface methodology (RSM) was adopted during the investigation and the contribution of feed rate (65.31%) was found as the dominant factor, followed by spindle speed (35.83%) and drill diameter (10.72%) to influence the delamination factor of hybrid composites. The grey relation analysis was further applied to the experimental results to rank the experiments. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the fractured surface of tested samples and delamination damage caused by drilling operations. The developed composites offered a maximum tensile strength (34.3 MPa), impact strength (11.13 J) and flexural strength (23.91 MPa) observed in the hybrid composites for a reinforcement combination of 5% nettle and 15% grewia optiva fibers. The prediction models developed by RSM and artificial neural network (ANN) were matched with the investigated results and ANN was noticed to be more accurate than the RSM. The research work will be beneficial for the industries involved in the development of structural panels reinforced with nettle and grewia optiva fibers.

Effect of microcrystalline cellulose on the mechanical properties of flax reinforced methylmethacrylate and urethane acrylate composites

Many structural applications are attracted to natural fibre-reinforced polymeric composites due to their eco-friendliness, recyclability, and cost-effectiveness. While significant progress has been made, their interface compatibility with the polymeric matrix is still challenging. Therefore, the present study proposed a method for improving the mechanical and dynamic mechanical performance of flax-reinforced novel methylmethacrylate (Elium®) and urethane acrylate (Crestapol®) composites. The technique involved the dispersion of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in the matrix at different weight percentages (0.5–0.75%) to improve the fibre/matrix interface. Flax/Elium® (FE) and flax/Crestapol® (FC) composites with varying weight percentages of MCC were manufactured using the vacuum infusion method. The resulting improvements in mechanical and dynamic properties were evaluated through in-plane shear (± 45° tensile), flexural, short beam shear, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The effects of MCC on these properties of flax/Elium® were compared to those of flax/Crestapol® composites. The addition of MCC improved the in-plane shear strength (FE: 13–20%, FC: 10–17%), flexural strength (FE: 6–13%, FC: 13%) and interlaminar shear strength (FE: 9–17%, FC: 10–20%). Also, FE composite showed 7–11%, 10–14% and 10–17% higher in-plane shear, flexural and interlaminar shear strengths, respectively, compared to FC composites. The DMA results confirmed the positive effect of Elium® resin and MCC on the dynamic storage and loss modulus.

Evaluation of mechanical properties of hybridised coir-carbon-basalt reinforced epoxy composites

ABSTRACT The present work focuses on the evaluation of the mechanical properties of epoxy composites reinforced with coir/carbon/basalt fibres. Reinforcements were used in as-received condition without any surface modifications. Composites were subjected to tensile, flexural and impact tests as per ASTM standards. Water absorption analysis was performed on the prepared composites using normal, salt and distilled water. The highest void fraction of 0.57% was obtained for the composite reinforced with carbon and basalt fibres. Highest tensile strength and modulus of 280 and 2500 MPa were achieved for composites reinforced only with carbon fibres. Hybrid composites fabricated using carbon fibres as outer layers and basalt as inner layers exhibited the highest flexural strength of 55 MPa. Composites reinforced only with basalt fibres displayed maximum impact strength of 22.64 kJ/m2 among the tested laminates. Inclusion of coir fibres significantly reduces tensile strength and modulus by 92.86% and 90%; flexural strength and modulus by 90.91% and 82%; impact strength by 71.74%, respectively. Composites reinforced only with basalt fibres absorbed more water than other combinations under all testing conditions. Scanning electron micrographs showed better interfacial bonding between synthetic fibres and the matrix as compared to natural fibre-reinforced composites.

The influence of different fiber sizes on the flexural strength of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites

This experiment aimed to investigate the impact of varying fiber lengths on the flexural strength of coconut fiber composites with epoxy resin. Coconut fiber composite panels were produced using rectangular molds. The effects of various fiber sizes, especially 2, 4, and 6 mm, respectively, were compared with fiberless and continuous fiber polymer composites on the flexural strength of Natural Fiber-reinforced Polymer Composites (NFPC). The lowest flexural strength is 10.04 MPa, was obtained for the NFPC sample with a fiber length of 2 mm, while the highest flexural strength value was 10.70 MPa with a fiber length of 6 mm. Generally, flexural strength is influenced by variations in fiber size but not significantly. The flexural modulus and flexural strength values exhibit the same trend. Fiber pullouts are visible on the fracture surface of the sample, and voids in the form of trapped gas are also apparent on the sample surface. Short fiber size is one of the causes of fiber pullout, which can reduce the flexural strength of short fiber polymers.

An effective hybrid particle swarm—artificial neural network optimization for predicting green bio-fiber mechanical characteristics and optimizing biomaterial performance

Natural fiber-reinforced composites are currently utilized in several applications due to worldwide environmental and cost concerns. However, these composites have production challenges such as poor reinforcement-matrix adhesion, that sophisticates the prediction of their mechanical properties. This study presents a novel, robust hybrid particle swarm—artificial neural network optimization (PSO-ANN) methodology to assess and create accurate predictions of the green bio-fibers to optimize and improve the mechanical features of biomaterials for green bio-products instead of performing tedious experimental works. As the mechanical qualities of green bio-fibers might differ from one fiber to another due to several interacted parameters, high complexity in predicting the bio-fiber capabilities exists. Therefore, this work utilizes suitable methods with a non-linear activation function to predict the mechanical characteristics of natural fibers that allow the researchers to improve the choices of natural fibers for biomaterials on the basis of cellulose content, the microfibrillar angle, and the diameter of natural fibers, decreasing the duration of the process required to characterize materials experimentally. The reliability of the introduced PSO-ANN model was verified by the investigations of the fiber’s tensile stress and Young’s modulus. Results showed that the presented model is capable of consistently and accurately monitoring the mechanical performance to a large degree, in comparison with experimental results. This in fact would facilitate and simplify the process of selecting the best natural fiber composites, which speeds up the experimental characterization phase and improves energy efficiency in the process of converting energy into monetary income, which would have ramifications for both economies and ecosystems. The anticipated method would also boost scientific evaluation of green fibers, confirming their role as a replacement material for green product fulfillment in future eco-friendly manufacturing.
