The new forms of therapy, especially of pneumococcal pneumonia, shorten the duration of disease, eliminate the causative agent from the sputum, and thereby lessen the incidence and duration of the carrier state. By so doing, it was hoped the spread of infection to others would be retarded and the incidence of pneumonia would decline.
