Ninety Years and Counting: The Past, Present, and Future of the Nursing Professional Development Specialty.

This article describes the long history of the specialty of nursing professional development (NPD), the founding of NPD's specialty organization, National Nursing Staff Development Organization, and the organization's transformation and growth to meet the ever-changing needs of NPD practitioners. Finally, the future of the NPD specialty is envisioned. This article provides the NPD practitioner with critical information to advocate for the specialty.

Using a High-Performance Planning Model to Increase Levels of Functional Effectiveness Within Professional Development.

Nursing professional practice models continue to shape how we practice nursing by putting families and members at the heart of everything we do. Faced with enormous challenges around healthcare reform, models create frameworks for practice by unifying, uniting, and guiding our nurses. The Kaiser Permanente Practice model was developed to ensure consistency for nursing practice across the continuum. Four key pillars support this practice model and the work of nursing: quality and safety, leadership, professional development, and research/evidence-based practice. These four pillars form the foundation that makes transformational practice possible and aligns nursing with Kaiser Permanente's mission. The purpose of this article is to discuss the pillar of professional development and the components of the Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice model (American Nurses Association & National Nursing Staff Development Organization, 2010) and place them in a five-level development framework. This process allowed us to identify the current organizational level of practice, prioritize each nursing professional development component, and design an operational strategy to move nursing professional development toward a level of high performance. This process is suggested for nursing professional development specialists.

Nursing Professional Development

The specialty of nursing professional development (NPD) has evolved over the years. The first educational focus in nursing started with the establishment of the first national nursing organization, the American Society of Superintendents for Training School Nurses in 1893. In 1971, the American Nurses Association established the Council on Continuing Education, and in 1974, Helen Tobin, often referred to as the Godmother of Staff Development, published The Process of Staff Development: Components for Change. The first standards related to nursing professional development were the Standards for Continuing Education in Nursing, also published in 1974. The Journal for Nurses in Staff Development was first published in 1985, and in 1989 Belinda Peutz spearheaded the establishment and incorporation of the National Nursing Staff Development Organization (NNSDO). NNSDO has now become the Association for Nursing Profesional Development (ANPD). The Association for Nursing Professional Development advances the specialty practice of nursing professional development for the enhancement of healthcare outcomes. There was tremendous increase in NPD publications and activities in the 1990s. ANPD published the latest Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development in 2016. The standards define Nursing Professional Development as a specialized nursing practice that facilitates the professional role development and growth of nurses and other healthcare personnel along the continuum from novice to expert.

Research Priorities for Nursing Professional Development

In 2010, the National Nursing Staff Development Organization Research Committee identified the need to delineate research priorities for nursing professional development (NPD). A Delphi study with 13 experts in NPD resulted in the identification of 24 priorities for the next 5 years. These priorities provide the future direction for NPD research and funding.

During the JNSD Editorial Board meeting in Indianapolis in July of last year (at the National Nursing Staff Development Organization’s [NNSDO] convention), board members discussed the large number of exhibits at the convention—the largest exhibit hall ever! Several commented that it was a shame that more staff development educators could not be present to visit with the exhibitors and learn about their products and services. Thus, the idea for this column was born. Vendor Spotlight is intended to provide you, the reader, with information about the products and services featured at the NNSDO convention this year. Identifying performance criteria for staff development competencies.

Performance criteria for specific staff development competencies need to be developed. The primary investigator (PI) surveyed the literature and developed specific performance criteria for objective staff development competencies. A survey was sent to a random stratified sample of 300 nurses certified in nursing continuing education and staff development asking them to rank the performance criteria for the objective statements and provide suggestions for an additional five subjective competencies. The PI reviewed the data and developed criteria for the subjective competencies. A survey with performance criteria for all 10 competencies was sent to National Nursing Staff Development Organization (NNSDO) affiliate groups for validation. Performance criteria were identified for all 10 competency statements. The mean scores for the national and regional samples were very similar in most areas. The data will provide a mechanism to promote and advance evidence-based practice in staff development. Instructors, individual staff development specialists, or organizations can use these performance criteria to determine if staff development personnel are meeting specified competencies.

Development of educator competencies and the professional review process.

As staff development educators prepare themselves and their organizations for forthcoming healthcare challenges, educators influence the practice of staff development through the use of competencies. Because competencies and peer review are expectations for staff, educator competencies and educator professional review should be essential for those who train staff. Based upon the American Nurses Association Standards of Practice, National Nursing Staff Development Organization research, and Patricia Benner's work, competencies for educators reflect practice levels from novice to expert and challenge educators to attain levels of excellence in practice. Use of educator competencies includes the professional review process components of peer input, self-evaluation, and portfolio development. Portfolio development provides documentation of educator accomplishments for the organization. This approach to educator competencies serves as a strategy to position educators to meet healthcare demands and demonstrates leadership in the profession. The staff development educators at a large Midwestern health system have refined this process during the past 2 years, and their unique approach to educator competencies and professional review can benefit both individual educators and healthcare organizations now and in the future.

Computer use in staff development. A national survey.

The Informatics Task Force of the National Nursing Staff Development Organization (NNSDO) conducted a national survey soliciting information about computer use in staff development. More than 600 members responded to the survey, suggesting that informatics and the issues surrounding nurses' use of computers are of concern to many staff development professionals. Responses from focus groups held at the National Nursing Staff Development Organization annual convention provided additional input. The results of the survey and discussion sessions have implications for preparing nurse educators for the specialty practice of staff development in the future.
