Diabetes mellitus: association of cystatin C- versus creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate with mortality and cardiovascular events.

To explore the association between the differences between cystatin C- and creatinine-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFRdiff), and the risk of mortality and cardiovascular (CV) events in individuals with diabetes. Three prospective cohorts analyzed data from adults with diabetes from the Incident, Development, and Prognosis of Diabetic Kidney Disease (INDEED) study (2016-17 to 2020) in China, the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 1999-2004 to 2019) in the USA and UK Biobank (UKB, 2006-10 to 2022) in the UK. Baseline eGFRdiff was calculated using both absolute difference between cystatin C- and creatinine-based calculations (eGFRabdiff), and the ratio between them (eGFRrediff). Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to investigate the association between eGFRdiff and outcomes including all-cause mortality and incident CV events. A total of 8129 individuals from INDEED (aged 60.7±10.0years), 1634 from NHANES (aged 62.5±14.4years) and 29358 from UKB (aged 59.4±7.3 years) were included. At baseline, 43.6%, 32.4% and 42.1% of participants in INDEED, NHANES and UKB, respectively, had an eGFRabdiff value ≥15mL/min/1.73 m2. During a median follow-up of 3.8years for INDEED, 15.2years for NHANES and 13.5years for UKB, a total of 430, 936 and 6143 deaths and a total of 481, 183 and 5583 CV events occurred, respectively. Each 1-standard deviation higher baseline eGFRabdiff was independently associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and CV events, with hazard ratios of 0.77 and 0.82 in INDEED, 0.70 and 0.68 in NHANES, and 0.66 and 0.78 in UKB. Similar results were observed for eGFRrediff. eGFRdiff represents a marker of adverse events for diabetes among general population. Monitoring both eGFRcys and eGFRcr yields additional prognostic information and has clinical utility in identifying high-risk individuals for mortality and CV events.

PPARα Senses Bisphenol S to Trigger EP300-Mediated Autophagy Blockage and Hepatic Steatosis.

The internal exposure dose of bisphenol S (BPS) is increasing since its use as a substitute for BPA. The relationship between BPS and nonalcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) and the underlying mechanism remain unclarified. In this study, we evaluated the correlation of BPS with NAFLD in populations from the Jiangsu Survey and the 2013-2016 National Health Nutrition Examination Survey and unraveled the molecular pathway by which BPS blocked hepatic autophagy, contributing to lipid accumulation. The study found that serum and urine BPS were associated with NAFLD risks in both the Chinese and US populations. For each additional unit of the BPS level, the NAFLD risk increased by 3.163-fold (serum) and 3.979-fold (urine) in the Chinese population. In addition, after BPS exposure at a dose equivalent to human exposure for 20 weeks, mice developed liver lipid accumulation. BPS could trigger PPARα-mediated transcriptional activation of EP300 expression. BPS promoted the translocation of EP300 from the nucleus to the cytoplasm to regulate the acetylation of Raptor and the activation of mTORC1, which in turn induced autophagy blockage and interfered with lipid degradation in hepatocytes. Conversely, knockdown of EP300 reduced Raptor acetylation and ameliorated autophagy blockage. This study demonstrated that EP300 was a key enzyme for the development of BPS-related NAFLD and provided novel evidence that BPS causes NAFLD.

Socioeconomic and Racial Trends in Human Papillomavirus Vaccination: A 10-Year Retrospective Review [ID: 1366482

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in the United States is low, and lack of vaccination disproportionately affects minority patients and those of a lower socioeconomic status. We sought to assess the effect of race and ethnicity and socioeconomic factors on HPV vaccine adoption over the last decade. METHODS: An analysis was conducted on data from the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey from 2009 to 2018 of individuals aged 12–26 years. Sociodemographic and vaccination history was gathered via self-report. Logistic regression models assessed relationships between HPV vaccination and variables of interest. RESULTS: Data from 8,120 individuals were included in the analysis. Vaccine initiation among females rose from 30.5% (95% CI 25.7–35.8) in 2009–2010 to 55.1% (95% CI 50.0–60.0) in 2017–2018 and from 8.3% (95% CI 6.2–10.9) in 2011–2012 to 36.4% (95% CI 31.2–41.9) in 2017–2018 for males. Individuals with insurance coverage were 2.0 times more likely to report being vaccinated (95% CI 1.8–2.6). Independent of insurance coverage, having a routine place to seek health care was associated with a 1.9 times increase (95% CI 1.5–2.3) in HPV vaccination. Independent of insurance and access to care, Mexican American and non-Hispanic Black individuals were 1.7 times (95% CI 1.3–2.2) and 1.4 times (95% CI 1.1–1.9) less likely to complete the vaccine series compared to non-Hispanic White individuals. CONCLUSION: Human papillomavirus vaccination initiation has increased in the United States over the past 10 years; however, vaccination has plateaued among women with only half of females vaccinated and nearly a fifth initiating but not completing the series. Access to care appears to be a significant predictor of HPV vaccination.

Associations between Healthy Lifestyle and All-Cause Mortality in Individuals with Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease.

Background and Aims: There is limited evidence about the association of healthy lifestyle and all-cause mortality in individuals with metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). We aimed to examine this association and compare it with the association in those without MAFLD. Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed and linked mortality data through 2019 in the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999–2010). A healthy lifestyle score was constructed from cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, healthy eating score, and leisure-time physical activity. Risk stratification was conducted in participants with MAFLD by fibrosis biomarkers and liver enzymes. Survey-weight adjusted Cox regression was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause mortality associated with healthy lifestyle. Results: There was a protective association between healthy lifestyle and all-cause mortality in participants with MAFLD (HR per 1-unit increase of healthy lifestyle score 0.77 [95% CI 0.69–0.85]), with no difference from the association in participants without MAFLD (HR 0.77 [0.72–0.82]). In participants with MAFLD, the associations tended to be stronger in those with lower risk of advanced fibrosis (HR per 1-unit increase of healthy lifestyle score 0.64 [0.50–0.79] for low NAFLD fibrosis score [NFS] and 0.84 [0.75–0.93] for high NFS, p-value for interaction 0.02), but did not differ by liver enzymes. The results for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) mirrored those for MAFLD. Conclusions: Healthy lifestyle showed protective associations with all-cause mortality regardless of MAFLD status, and the associations tended to be stronger in those with lower risk of advanced fibrosis. Timely lifestyle modification matters for individuals with MAFLD.

Association between Relative Handgrip Strength and Insulin Resistance in Korean Elderly Men without Diabetes: Findings of the 2015 Korea National Health Nutrition Examination Survey.

BackgroundEvidence regarding the association between handgrip strength (HGS) and insulin resistance in a non-diabetic population is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the association between relative HGS and insulin resistance in older men without diabetes, using a representative sample of the Korean male population.MethodsThe study population comprised 206 participants aged 65–80 years, selected from the 2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Insulin resistance was defined as the upper tertile of the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for insulin resistance were assessed using multiple logistic regression analyses after adjusting for confounding variables.ResultsThe prevalence of insulin resistance decreased with increasing relative HGS. The prevalence in the T1, T2, and T3 groups was 46.0%, 32.2%, and 26.4%, respectively. Compared with the individuals in the highest tertile of relative HGS, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for insulin resistance in individuals in the lowest quartile was 2.82 (1.10–7.21) after adjusting for age, smoking, alcohol consumption, aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, residential area, household income, and education level.ConclusionLower relative HGS was inversely associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance in older Korean men without diabetes. In clinical practice, relative HGS, which is a simple and inexpensive tool, could be a useful measure for identifying older men with insulin resistance. Moreover, these findings suggest that muscle strengthening exercises should be considered to reduce insulin resistance and increase insulin sensitivity.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder medications and bone mineral density of adults in the United States

IntroductionSeveral medications used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been associated with diminished bone mineral density (BMD) in children. The objective of this study was to determine if evidence exists for a similar association among adults. Materials and methodsA retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data collected by the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey 2013–2018. Data from 7961 individuals aged 18 to 50, 79 of whom were taking medications to treat ADHD. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans provided measure of body composition. Linear regression models were used to examine associations between ADHD medication use and body composition. ResultsStimulant ADHD medication usage was found to be associated with decreased BMD in both the skull (−6.6%; 95% CI 5.9–7.2) (P < 0.05) and thoracic spine (−6.0%; 95% CI 5.1–7.0) (P < 0.05). No difference in BMD was seen in any other skeletal region based on stimulant ADHD medication use (P > 0.05). We found no evidence to suggest that duration of use affected the observed decreases in BMD, P > 0.05. ConclusionThis study using a nationally representative sample assessed whether stimulant medication use in adults with ADHD was associated with decreased BMD. The overall results are inconclusive. Further study is needed to better evaluate if ADHD and/or stimulant medication use is independently associated with bone health.

Inverse Association of Serum Folate Level with Metabolic Syndrome and Its Components in Korean Premenopausal Women: Findings of the 2016-2018 Korean National Health Nutrition Examination Survey.

Research on the association of serum folate levels with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in premenopausal women is lacking. This study was aimed to investigate this association in 1730 premenopausal women using the 2016 to 2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Participants’ mean age and BMI were 35.9 years and 22.7 kg/m2, respectively. Participants were divided into three groups according to serum folate tertiles. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for abdominal obesity, elevated blood pressure (BP), high fasting plasma glucose (FPG), high triglycerides (TG), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and MetS were calculated in multiple logistic regression models adjusted for possible confounders, by serum folate level tertiles. Prevalence of MetS (14.9, 11.0, and 8.6%); abdominal obesity (17.8, 16.0, and 11.4%); high TG (17.5, 14.0, and 11.1%); and low HDL-C (50.3, 44.6, and 42.5%) decreased with increasing folate level tertile. Prevalence of elevated BP (14.3, 12.0, and 11.7%) and high FPG (11.9, 15.8, and 13.0%) showed no significant differences according to serum folate level tertiles. The multivariate-adjusted ORs (95% CIs) for MetS, abdominal obesity, elevated BP, high TG, and low HDL-C in the highest folate level tertile were 2.17 (1.46–3.22), 1.80 (1.25–2.60), 1.77 (1.16–2.70), 1.90 (1.35–2.67), and 1.49 (1.14–1.94), respectively. The ORs for high FPG did not show significant differences according to serum folate level tertiles. In conclusion, serum folate levels were inversely associated with an increased risk of MetS in Korean premenopausal women. These results suggest that MetS can be prevented and managed by improving the serum folate levels in premenopausal women.

Regional Exposure to Air Pollution and Health Behaviors as a Risk Factor for Suicide Attempt: The Seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 2016-2017, Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Background/Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the influencing factors of fine particleconcentration levelby region and health behaviors on suicide attempts.Method/Statistical Analysis: This study used the 7th (2016-2017) primitive data disclosed by the NationalHealth Nutrition Examination Survey. Considering the design features of the sample data, it is analyzed witha complex sampling method by reflecting stratas, clusters, and weight. The data were analyzed using logisticregression analysis of the complex sampleusing the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.Findings: As a result of logistic regression analysis, the provability of suicide attempt was 12.32 times(95% CI 5.33-28.49, p&lt;.001) higher in depression diagnosis group, 5.55 times (95% CI 1.87-16.46, p=.002)higher in 10 or more drinks in single session group, 2.48 times (95% CI 1.07-5.73, p=.003) higher in highperceived stress group, and 0.1 unit increase in Health-related Quality of life (? = -2.35, p=.030) resulted in0.79 times factor on suicide attempt rate.Improvements/Applications: This study can provide basic data to develop an intervention program that canreduce suicide attempt rate by analyzing environmental and health related factors affecting suicide attempts.

Access to Dental Care and Depressive Illness: Results from the Korea National Health Nutrition Examination Survey.

Background and Objectives: Recent evidence suggests that oral health is associated with various systemic diseases including psychiatric illnesses. This study examined the association between depression and access to dental care in Korean adults. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional evaluation was performed using data from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014. The general characteristics of the participants, the current depression status, and issues with access to dental care were collected to evaluate the factors for not being able to make dental visits according to care needs. Results: The study population comprised a total of 5976 participants who were 19 years of age and older and represented 40.7 million Koreans. A multivariable logistic regression analysis with weighted observations revealed that participants with current depressive illness were about two times more likely to express that they could not make dental visits in spite of their perceived care needs (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 2.097; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.046–4.203). The reasons for not making dental visits included financial problems, perceived importance of the dental problem, and fear of visiting dental professionals. Conclusions: Korean adults with current depressive illness were less likely to make dental visits when they had dental care needs. To improve dental health accessibility for patients with depressive illness, coordinated efforts can be considered involving multidisciplinary health care professionals.

Multi-Modal Stacked Denoising Autoencoder for Handling Missing Data in Healthcare Big Data

Supply and demand increase in response to healthcare trends. Moreover, personal health records (PHRs) are being managed by individuals. Such records are collected using different avenues and vary considerably in terms of their type and scope depending on the particular circumstances. As a result, some data may be missing, which has a negative effect on the data analysis, and such data should, therefore, be replaced with appropriate values. In this study, a method for estimating missing data using a multi-modal autoencoder applied to the field of healthcare big data is proposed. The proposed method uses a stacked denoising autoencoder to estimate the missing data that occur during the data collection and processing stages. Autoencoders are neural networks that output value of x <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">^</sup> similar to an input value of x. In the present study, data from the Korean National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES), conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), are used. As representative healthcare data from South Korea, they contain a large number of parameters identical to those used in the PHRs. Based on this, models can be generated to estimate missing data occurring in PHRs. Furthermore, PHRs involve a multi-modality that allows the data to be collected from multiple sources for a single object. Therefore, the stacked denoising autoencoder applied is configured under a multi-modal setting. Through pre-processing, a set of data without missing value in KNHNES is designed. In the data set based learning, a label is set as original data, and an autoencoder input is set as noised input that additionally has as many random zero numbers as noise factor. In this way, the autoencoder learns in the way of making the zero-based noise value similar to the original label value. When the amount of missing data in a dataset reaches approximately 25%, the accuracy of the proposed method using a multi-modal stacked denoising autoencoder is 0.9217, which is higher than that achieved by other ordinary methods. For a single-modal denoising autoencoder, the accuracy is 0.932, with a slight difference of approximately 0.01, which falls within the allowable limits in data analysis. In terms of computational performance, a single-modal autoencoder has 10,384 parameters, which is 5,594 more than those used in a multi-modal stacked autoencoder. These parameters affect the speed of the model. Both models exhibit a significant difference in the number of parameters but demonstrate a relatively small difference in accuracy, suggesting that the proposed multi-modal stacked denoising autoencoder is advantageous over a single-modal model when used on a personal device. Moreover, a multi-modal model can save additional time when processing large amounts of data in locations such as hospitals and institutions.

Background/Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors which may influence a healthrelated quality of life in middle age women in Korea.Method/Statistical Analysis: This study used the 7th (2017) primitive data disclosed by the National HealthNutrition Examination Survey. Considering the design features of the sample data, it is analyzed with acomplex sampling method by reflecting stratas, clusters and weight. The data were analyzed using descriptivestatistics of the complex sample, general linear model of the complex sample and multiple regression usingthe SPSS/WIN 18.0 program.Findings: As a result of conducting the regression analysis, the explanatory power of above 3 variables wasappeared to be 16% including subjective health status (? =-.055, p&lt;.001), Perceivedstress (? =. 016, p=.007)and subjective body shape (? = .011, p = .012).Improvements/Applications: This study will be used as basic data for developing nursing interventionprograms that can improve health related quality of life of middle age by establishing factors that affect wellbeingof middle age using variables of multilateral aspects.

Centroid of Age Neighborhoods: A New Approach to Estimate Biological Age

Estimation of human biological age is an important and difficult challenge. Different biomarkers and numerous approaches have been studied for biological age prediction, each with its advantages and limitations. In this paper, we propose a new biological age estimation method, and investigate the performance of the new method. We introduce a centroid based approach, using the notion of age neighborhoods. Specifically, we develop a model, based on which we compute biological age using blood biomarkers, by considering the centroid or mediod of specially selected age neighborhoods. Experiments were performed on the National Health and Human Nutrition Examination Survey dataset with biomarkers (21451 individuals). Compared with current popular methods for biological age prediction, our experiments show that the proposed age neighborhood model results in an improved performance in human biological age estimation.

Gender Differences in the Prevalence of Chronic Pain and Leisure Time Physical Activity Among US Adults: A NHANES Study.

Gender disparities in chronic pain are well documented in the literature. However, little is known regarding the relationship between physical activity (PA) and gender disparities in chronic pain. This study described gender differences in prevalence of chronic pain and PA, and identified a type of leisure time PA that individuals frequently chose in a nationally representative sample of US adults (N = 14,449). Data from the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2004 were analyzed. Individuals were categorized into no chronic pain (NCP), localized chronic pain (LCP), and widespread chronic pain (WCP) groups based on responses to a pain questionnaire. A self-report PA questionnaire was used to estimate the time spent in different types of PA. Women showed higher prevalence of LCP and WCP compared to men. Men spent more hours per week for leisure time PA compared to women, but men and women showed similar prevalence of sufficient PA to meet a PA recommendation (≥150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA) across chronic pain categories. However, the prevalence of sufficient PA was substantially higher among men and women with NCP compared to men and women with LCP and WCP. Additionally, both men and women chose walking as the primary type of leisure time PA. Together, gender disparities exist in the prevalence of chronic pain and hours spent for leisure time PA. More research is needed to explore the role of increasing leisure time PA, such as walking, in reducing gender disparities in chronic pain.

Unpacking the paradox: testing for mechanisms in the food insecurity and BMI association

ABSTRACTObjective: Using data from the 2007–2008 continuous National Health Nutrition Examination Survey NHANES, this study conducted gender-specific analyses to examine the influence of food insecurity on individual Body Mass Index (BMI). The recent literature has identified the existence of the food insecurity–obesity paradox such that individuals who are food insecure are more likely to have higher BMI, and this association is especially prevalent among women. Various mechanisms have been proposed as having the potential for explaining this paradox.Design Cross-sectional: The relationship between food insecurity and women was assessed. Potential mediating risk factors were tested using multiple regression techniques.Setting: The 2007–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, USASubjects: Women 24–64 years of ageResults: Food insecurity is associated with greater body mass index among women. Potential mechanisms such as availability of health foods, time to grocery store, stress, and health insurance access had independent associations with BMI but did not mediate the relationship between food insecurity and BMI.Conclusion: Results confirm the positive association between food insecurity and elevated BMI among women. However, these analyses do not provide evidence for a mediating role of mechanisms described in the research literature. Future research should strive to identify and test for other potential pathways of influence that might explain this food insecurity–obesity paradox.

Variation in genital human papillomavirus infection prevalence and vaccination coverage among men and women in the USA.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection that causes majority of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. Prophylactic HPV vaccine is available for the primary prevention of cancer and HPV transmission. Here, we are going to discuss the variation of HPV prevalence, HPV vaccination coverage and potential risk factors of men and women, retrieved from the cross-sectional study of the National Health Nutrition Examination Survey, a representative sample of noninstitutionalized, civilian residents in the USA. The overall penile HPV prevalence in men was 45.2% and the high risk oncogenic HPV prevalence defined by DNA testing was 25.1% that appeared to be widespread among all the age groups, which contrasts the vaginal HPV prevalence of 26.8% in women.

Measuring the variation between self-reported osteoarthritis pain assessments

Self-reported pain questions are the established way to determine osteoarthritis (OA) related pain in population cohort studies, of which NHANES-type (National Health Nutrition Examination Survey) questions and WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index) are the most common. However, there is limited understanding of how wording variations relating to the duration of pain (i.e. most days in the month) and period of pain recall (i.e. in the last year) affect the prevalence and comparability of these questions. The aim of this research was to assess four common NHANES pain questions and to establish an equivalent threshold within the WOMAC pain subscale.

Validity of muscle-to-fat ratio as a predictor of adult metabolic syndrome.

[Purpose] This study was aimed at determining the validity of the muscle-to-fat ratio as an indicator for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome by establishing an optimal cutoff value. [Subjects and Methods] Data from the first and second year of the fifth Korea National Health Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare and Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were used. A total of 6,256 subjects were included in the study. Diagnostic accuracy was measured by using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. [Results] The receiver operating characteristic curve for the muscle-to-fat ratio, which represents the diagnostic power for predicting metabolic syndrome, was 0.713 in men and 0.721 in women. The optimal cutoff value for the prediction and diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was 3.09 kg/kg in men and 1.83 kg/kg in women. Intergroup differences based on the muscle-to-fat ratio indicated that the low-ratio group had higher values for all indicators of metabolic syndrome than the high-ratio group. [Conclusion] The muscle-to-fat ratio can be used as an indicator for the prediction and diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, and early prevention and management of metabolic syndrome can help in improving public health.

Latent Class Typologies for Emotional Support Among Midlife and Aging Americans: Evidence from the National Health and Human Nutrition Examination Survey

Using data from 40-year-old and older respondents in the 2007–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Study, this study sought to identify variations in emotional support networks among midlife and older adults and examine how those variations were related to depressive symptoms and to perceptions of inadequate support. Latent class analyses were used to identify six typologies of emotional support networks. Typologies were labeled, and multinomial logistic regression was used to examine how membership in typologies was related to variations in depressive symptoms and perceived adequacy of emotional support. The findings indicate that when the focus is emotional support, social support from spouses is related to fewer depressive symptoms and less perceived need for increased emotional support. The results of this study suggest that access to family members, especially spouses, for emotional support is related to fewer depressive symptoms and a decreased probability of reporting inadequate social support. Overall, this study suggests that emotional support networks that include family members, especially spouses, are supportive of older persons’ quality of life.

Comparison of chronic disease risk by dietary carbohydrate energy ratio in Korean elderly: Using the 2007-2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Purpose: It is reported that most senior people consume a high carbohydrate diet, while a high carbohydrate diet could contribute to the risk of chronic disease. The aim of this study is to determine whether a high carbohydrate diet can increase the risk of chronic disease in elderly Koreans. Methods: Using the 2007-2009 Korean National Health Nutrition Examination Survey data, out of a total of 3,917 individuals aged 65 and above, final 1,535 subjects were analyzed, divided by dietary carbohydrate energy ratio into two groups of moderate carbohydrate ratio (MCR, 55-70%) and excessive carbohydrate ratio (ECR, ＞ 70%). All data were processed after the application of weighted value, using a general linear model or logistic regression. Results: Eighty one percent of elderly Koreans consumed diets with carbohydrate energy ratio above 70%. The ECR group included more female subjects, rural residents, lower income, and lower education level. The ECR group showed lower waist circumference, lower diastolic blood pressure, and lower frequency of consumption of meat and egg, milk, and alcohol. The intake of energy and most nutrients, with the exception of fiber, potassium, vitamin A, and carotene, was lower in the ECR group compared to the MCR group. When analyzed by gender, the ECR group showed lower risk of dyslipidemia in male and obesity in female subjects, even though the ECR group showed low intake of some nutrients. No difference in the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and anemia was observed between the two groups in male or female subjects. Conclusion: This result suggested that a high carbohydrate diet would not be a cause to increase the risk of chronic disease in the elderly. Further study is needed in order to determine an appropriate carbohydrate energy ratio for elderly Koreans to reduce the risk of chronic disease.
