Planetary Atmosphere Studies in Russia in 2019–2022

Russian Research in the Field of Atmospheric Chemistry in 2019–2022

A brief overview of the work of Russian scientists in the field of atmospheric chemistry in 20190–2022 is presented, including work on the chemistry of the troposphere, the chemistry of the ozone layer, work on the study of heterophase processes, as well as work on the chemical aspects of climate and its change. The review was prepared in the Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry of the Section of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences of the National Geophysical Committee.

This publication is an overview of the results of Russian polar research in 2019–2022, based on paper prepared by the Commission on Polar Meteorology of the National Geophysical Committee for the National Report on Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences to the XXVIII General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (Berlin, Germany, July 11–20 2023).

March 15, 2021 Chief Researcher, Head of the Laboratory of Hydrological Processes of the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, DSc, ex-president of the International Association for Physical Ocean Sciences (IAPSO) Evgeny Morozov is 75 years old. E.G. Morozov is a prominent scientist and organizer of world-class science in the field of studying the temporal and spatial variability of hydrological processes and internal waves in a wide range of scales. He was the first to build a map of the amplitudes of tidal internal waves of the World Ocean. His monograph “Oceanic Internal Waves” published in 1985 in Russian, as well as his article “Semidiurnal internal wave global field”, published in the Deep Sea Research in 1995, are among the most cited on the problem of internal tidal waves. Unique results were obtained by E.G. Morozov in the study of internal waves in the Arctic, including under the ice and near the front of glaciers sliding into the ocean on Spitsbergen. He made a significant contribution to the study of various currents: the Gulf Stream, the Kuroshio and their rings, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the California Current, the Falkland Current, the Lomonosov and Tareev subsurface equatorial currents. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO) and since 2011 he has been elected President of the IAPSO, represented the IAPSO in this capacity on the Executive Committee of the International Geodetic and Geophysical Union (IUGG) and on the Executive Committee of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic research (SCOR). E.G. Morozov is the chairman of the Ocean Physical Sciences Section of the National Geophysical Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Istoriya issledovanij Geofizicheskogo centra RAN. 2016 god

The article is devoted to the main directions of scientific activities of the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GC RAS) and the National Geophysical Committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences (NGK RAS) in 2016. The most important results of scientific research of the year, topics and projects carried out within the framework of a state assignment, fundamental programs of the Presidium and ONZ RAS, Federal Target Program, projects of the RFBR and RSF, as well as a grant from the President of the Russian Federation are listed. The article reflects publishing and international activities.

The Russian open scientific conference “Modern problems of remote sensing, radar, wave propagation and diffraction” (MPRSRWPD) 2021 took place in the Russian Federation in the city of Murom on May 25-27, 2021.The conference has been held at the Murom Institute of Vladimir State University since 1991. The organizers of the Conference MPRSRWPD 2021 are the Russian Academy of Sciences, diverse scientific organizations and a number of leading universities of Russia.Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic limited the travel of scientists and personal participation in the conference. Under these conditions, the Organizing Committee decided to hold MPRSRWPD 2021 completely online with remote meeting control from the Murom Institute.Such a decision required a different organization of the conference itself, the need for more precise compliance with the schedule for presentations, taking into account the differences between the time zones in which the speakers were located. Thanks to the efficient work of the Organizing Committee, these difficulties were successfully overcome.Of course, this format of the conference significantly narrowed the opportunities for personal communication of participants, practically eliminating discussions during breaks and after the end of meetings, which has always been an indispensable attribute of this conference. Nevertheless, the discussion of the reports took place, and at the end of the meetings, a general discussion took place in the format of a “round table”.Sixty two reports on the issues of wave propagation and diffraction, remote sensing, methodological and instrumental issues of sounding, and measurement accuracy were presented at the conference. Thirty four papers of them were recommended by the Program and Organizing Committees for publication in the JPCS collection. Twenty eight articles based on the results of peer review met the standards of IOP Publishing.The Organizing Committee expresses its gratitude to everyone who, at this difficult time, managed to find opportunities to participate in the conference, to everyone the organization of the work of the meetings depended on, and especially to our esteemed experts-I. An overview of the results of Russian studies of the average atmosphere in 20152018, prepared by the Commission on the average atmosphere of the Section of meteorology and atmospheric Sciences of the National geophysical Committee for the National report on meteorology and atmospheric Sciences to the XXVII General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (Canada, 2019 ).

Russian Investigations in Atmospheric Chemistry for 2015–2018

This is a brief review of Russian studies in the field of atmospheric chemistry for 2015–2018, covering studies on tropospheric chemistry, chemistry of the ozone layer, heterophase processes, and those related to the chemical aspects of climate and its changes. The review was prepared by the Commission for Atmospheric Chemistry of the Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences Section of the National Geophysical Committee. The report was considered and approved at the 27th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG)1.

ИСТОРИЯ ЖУРНАЛА «ОКЕАНОЛОГИЧЕСКИЕ ИССЛЕДОВАНИЯ»

The history of the Journal started from the organization of the National Geophysical Committee during the International Geophysical Year in 1957-1958 (IGY). The IGY continued the researches started during the two International Polar Years in 1882-1883 and 1932-1933. The idea of the International Geophysical Year was suggested by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. The issues of the terminated in 1993 by the last number 44. In 2017, the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology decided to continue this series and organized its electronic journal. According to the agreement with the National Geophysical Committee it was decided to continue the issues of the Journal of Oceanological Research, thus publish a new journal continuing the series of the previous publications.

Polar meteorology: Results of Russian research in 2011–2014

A review of the results of Russian polar research performed in 2011–2014 is provided. It is based on material prepared by the Commission on Polar Meteorology of the National Geophysical Committee, Russian Academy of Sciences, for the National Report on Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences submitted to General Assembly XXVI of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics1 [1].

This review is based on the information prepared by the Commission on the Dynamic Meteorology of the National Geophysical Committee, Russian Academy of Sciences, and included in the general information report of the Section of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences at the XXV General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics.
