An observation study of the effect of "Internet + Nursing" on psychological status and quality of life of patients with thyroid eye disease.

"Internet + Nursing" refers to medical institutions using Internet technologies and big data to provide nursing services to discharged patients or those with severe illnesses unable to visit hospitals, through online applications and offline care provision. This study aimed to explore the influence of "Internet + Nursing" on the psychological status and quality of life of patients with thyroid eye disease. Sixty-eight patients with thyroid eye disease from January 2021 to December 2022 were divided into a research group (n = 34, joined the platform) and control group (n = 34, not joined the platform) based on their voluntary participation in our hospital's "Internet + Nursing Platform." The self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) scores of the research group were lower than those of the control group (P < .05). The short form-36 health survey (SF-36) scores in various dimensions were higher in the research group compared to the control group (P < .05). The incidence rates of retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, diabetic retinopathy, and iris neovascularization were lower in the research group compared to the control group (P < .05). After nursing, exophthalmos, blink frequency, and eyelid height of the research group were lower than those of the control group, while tear film breakup time was higher than that of the control group (P < .05). The visual acuity of the research group was higher than that of the control group (P < .05). After nursing, the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI-VFQ-25) scores in various dimensions were significantly higher in the research group than those in the control group (P < .05). Additionally, after nursing, the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the research group were lower than those in the control group (P < .05). The patients in the research group exhibited higher recognition scores of nursing compared to those in the control group (P < .05). Through the implementation of "Internet + Nursing" for patients with thyroid eye disease discharged from our hospital, we can provide better out-of-hospital nursing for patients, reduce the occurrence of complications, improve ocular surface symptoms, promote visual acuity recovery, and improve patients' psychological status and quality of life.

Varenicline Solution Nasal Spray for the Treatment of Dry Eye Disease Following LASIK.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of a varenicline solution nasal spray (VNS) for reducing the signs and symptoms of dry eye following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Subjects electing to undergo LASIK were randomized to VNS (study group) or placebo/vehicle (control group) and initiated treatment with the nasal spray twice daily 28days prior to surgery with continued treatment for 84days following LASIK. After initiation of treatment, subjects were seen on the day of surgery and postoperatively on Days 1, 7, 28, 84 (3months) and 168 (6months). The primary outcome measure was the mean change in NEI-VFQ-25, a 25-item dry eye questionnaire, from baseline to 3months. The second primary outcome measure was the mean change in corneal fluorescein staining. Secondary outcome measures included evaluation of tear break-up time, Schirmer testing, tear osmolarity and eye dryness score (EDS). Twenty subjects were enrolled in each group and successfully underwent LASIK. Both groups demonstrated an improvement in the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) at 3months. The study group demonstrated improved corneal staining scores at months 1 and 3. Similarly, the study group demonstrated improvement in tear osmolarity scores versus the placebo group at the same time points. Although the study group was numerically greater than placebo for each time point for both corneal staining and tear osmolarity, the differences were not statistically significant for any primary or secondary outcome measures. VNS is a dry eye treatment option for patients following LASIK and may have potential benefit for patients hoping to avoid additional topical medications. The results were not statistically significant compared to placebo in this trial, and further investigation of the use of VNS following LASIK in a larger trial would be beneficial.

Vision-related quality of life in patients with retinal vein occlusion.

This study aims to assess the vision-related quality of life in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) among those referred to Labbafinejad Medical Center and Imam Hossein Hospital between 2019 and 2021. This comparative study included 37 eligible patients diagnosed with various types of RVO, with an average age of 61 ± 9. To ensure data validity, we included 74 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. Only cases with a definitive diagnosis of RVO, confirmed by two retina specialists (ND and RN), were included. We assessed the vision-related quality of life of our participants using the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25). All participants underwent interviews. In our study, we examined the vision-related quality of life in different subgroups of RVO patients. Overall, RVO patients had a significantly lower total VRQoL score compared to healthy individuals (P < 0.001), except in the subscale analysis of specific factors such as ocular pain, color vision, and driving, where no statistically significant difference was observed. A statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of subgroups, indicating lower VRQoL in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) patients (P = 0.010). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between lower VRQoL and decreased vision (P = 0.009) as well as longer disease duration (P = 0.011). Retinal vein occlusion can significantly reduce vision-related quality of life, particularly in more severe cases.

Mix-and-match vs bilateral trifocal and bilateral EDOF intraocular lens implantation: the spline curve battle.

To compare the postoperative visual acuity curves following 3 pseudophakic presbyopic correction techniques. Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, Alexandroupolis, Greece. Prospective, randomized, comparative trial. For this study, patients with stage 2 Lens Opacities Classification System III cataract were divided into 3 study groups: (1) premium monovision group, including patients who received the Panoptix intraocular lens (IOL) in the recessive eye and Vivity IOL in the dominant one; (2) bilateral trifocal group, including those who received bilaterally the Panoptix IOL; and (3) bilateral xEDOF group, including patients who received bilaterally the Vivity IOL. Postoperative bilateral uncorrected distance visual acuity was measured at 25.5, 28, 33, 40, 50, 66, 100, 200, and 300 cm distances. Spline curve fitting was attempted, and areas of the curves (AOCs) and curvature k were calculated. All patients responded to the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25). 90 patients were equally divided into the 3 groups. Premium monovision and bilateral trifocal implantations delivered similar visual acuity (all AOC P > .05); however, the trifocal patients suffered from drops in vision acuity in certain distance ranges as expressed by negative curvature values. Bilateral xEDOF patients demonstrated worse near vision acuity ( P < .05). Premium monovision patients reported better scores in NEI-VFQ 25 ( P = .03) and in the near activities ( P = .02) and distant activities ( P = .04) subscales. All surgical options provided impressive outcomes. Premium monovision appeared to deliver the best results.

Associations Between Self-Reported Visual and Hearing Functioning and Cognitive Function Among Hispanics/Latino: Hispanic Community Health Study.

To investigate the associations between self-reported visual functioning (VF) and hearing functioning with cognition in the Hispanic/Latino population. We utilized data from the Miami Ocular Study of Latinos ancillary study to Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos with 1,056 participants aged 45 and older. The outcomes were cognitive performances assessed by the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), Word Fluency, Brief-Spanish English Verbal Learning Test-recall (B-SEVLT recall), words recalled over 3 trials, and the Six-Item Screener. VF was measured by National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ), and hearing function was measured by Hearing Handicap Inventory Screening Questionnaire for Adults and Elderly (HHIA/E-S). Multiple regressions were performed for each cognitive outcome while controlling for covariates and complex sampling design. NEI-VFQ was associated with 3 of the 5 cognitive outcomes. A 4-point NEI-VFQ score difference was associated with a 0.56-point difference in DSST (standard error [SE] = 0.27, p < .001), 0.17 in Word fluency (SE = 0.16, p < .01), and 0.08 in B-SEVLT-recall (SE = 0.07, p < .01). HHIA/E-S was not associated with any of the cognitive measures examined. These data suggest that impaired VF is associated with worse cognition in the Hispanic/Latino population. Although previous work in this cohort indicated hearing loss assessed by pure tone audiometry was associated with worse cognition, we found self-perceived hearing function was not associated with cognition, suggesting the potential limitation of self-reported hearing function as a proxy for hearing loss in epidemiological research in Hispanic/Latino populations. Results also imply impaired VF and hearing function may be linked to cognition differently in the Hispanic population, and more research is needed to better understand the underlying linking mechanisms. Visual and hearing impairments are common and treatable and represent important modifiable risk factors that can be treated to preserve cognitive function in Hispanics/Latinos.

Vision-related quality of life among released from treatment cases of leprosy evaluated with NEI-VFQ-25: a cross-sectional study

BackgroundPeople with leprosy who have been declared Release From Treatment (RFT) are often not aware of the leprosy sequelae possibility which can decrease their quality of life. This could be because they have been adapting for a long time hence they do not feel the need to see physicians. This study seeks to compare the results of Vision-Related Quality of Life (VR-QoL) among RFT persons based on the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire–25 (NEI-VFQ-25) and WHO grading disability based on physical examination.MethodsA cross-sectional study of 325 RFT subjects from leprosy communities (Singkawang, West Kalimantan and Tangerang, Banten) was conducted between 2018 and 2019. We used the NEI-VFQ-25 questionnaire that had been validated and translated into Indonesian and distributed to the leprosy population. Relationships and comparisons among variables were evaluated using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests.ResultsThere were three main results: The median composite score of VR-QoL for WHO grade 0, 1, and 2 disabilities has decreased by 13%, 25.5%, and 30% of the maximum value, respectively. Of the total, eleven subscales were statistically significant between WHO grading disability and VR-QoL based on the NEI-VFQ-25 (p < 0.05). The comparison between grade 0 and grade 2 disability in all subscales was statistically significant (p < 0.05).ConclusionsThe grade of disability is related to their VR-QoL assessment using the NEI-VFQ-25 questionnaire. Thus, it can be used as an initial screening in primary healthcare settings to increase awareness of disability before a thorough physical examination.

ASCEND-Eye: Rationale, design and baseline characteristics for a sub-study of the ASCEND randomised trial, exploring the effects of aspirin and omega-3 fatty acids on diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration

BackgroundAspirin and omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) have potential disease-modifying roles in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but randomized evidence of these effects is limited. We present the rationale and baseline characteristics of ASCEND-Eye, a sub-study of the double-blind, 2x2 factorial design, randomized placebo-controlled ASCEND (A Study of Cardiovascular Events iN Diabetes) trial of 100 mg aspirin daily and, separately, 1g omega-3 FAs daily for the primary prevention of serious cardiovascular events, in 15,480 British adults, aged 40 years or older with diabetes. MethodsEye events will be derived from three sources: 1) participant follow-up questionnaires from ASCEND, 2) electronic NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP) data and 3) responses to the National Eye Institute's Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25) sent to a subset of participants after the main trial ended. Analytic cohorts and outcomes relevant to these data sources are described. The primary outcome is referable diabetic eye disease, a secondary outcome is incident AMD events. ResultsParticipant-reported events were ascertained for the full cohort of randomized individuals who were followed up over 7.4 years in ASCEND (n = 15,480). Linked DESP data were available for 48% of those (n = 7360), and 57% completed the NEI-VFQ-25 (n = 8839). The baseline characteristics of these three cohorts are presented. DiscussionEstablishing the risks and benefits of drugs commonly taken by people with diabetes, the elderly, or both, and finding new treatments for DR and AMD is important. ASCEND-Eye provides the opportunity to evaluate the effect of aspirin and, separately, omega-3 FAs for both conditions. Progressive Visual Field Loss and Subsequent Quality of Life Outcomes in Glaucoma

To evaluate the association between baseline severity of visual field (VF) damage and the initial rates of VF progression with quality of life (QOL) outcomes over an extended follow-up in glaucoma. Retrospective cohort study. Both eyes of 167 glaucoma or suspected glaucoma patients were followed for 10.0±0.3 years. The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ)-25 was performed at the end of the follow-up. Separate linear regression models included the VF parameters of the better eye, the worse eye, and the central and peripheral points of the integrated binocular VF to evaluate the association of baseline and initial rates of change of VF parameters (first half of the follow-up) with NEI-VFQ-25 Rasch-calibrated disability scores over an extended follow-up. All models demonstrated association of worse baseline severity of VF damage with worse subsequent NEI-VFQ-25 scores. Faster rates of decline in VF mean deviation of the better eye and the mean sensitivity of the central and peripheral test locations of the integrated binocular VF were significantly associated with worse subsequent NEI-VFQ-25 scores. VF parameters of the better eye performed better than those of the worse eye (R2 of 0.21, and 0.15, respectively), and the VF parameters of the central test locations performed better than those of the peripheral test locations (R2 of 0.25, and 0.20, respectively). Baseline severity and initial rates of change of VF damage are associated with QOL outcomes over an extended follow-up. Assessment of longitudinal VF changes, especially in better eye, provides prognostic utility to identify glaucoma patients at a higher risk for developing disease-related disability.

The Effect of Self-Reported Visual Impairment and Sleep on Cognitive Decline: Results of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

Visual impairment could worsen sleep/wake disorders and cognitive decline. To examine interrelations among self-reported visual impairment, sleep, and cognitive decline in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Miami-site. HCHS/SOL Miami-site participants ages 45-74 years (n = 665) at Visit-1, who returned for cognitive test 7-years later (SOL-INCA). Participants completed the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ), validated sleep questionnaires and test for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) at Visit-1. We obtained verbal episodic learning and memory, verbal fluency, processing speed, and executive functioning at Visit-1 and at SOL-INCA. Processing speed/executive functioning were added to SOL-INCA. We examined global cognition and change using a regression-based reliable change index, adjusting for the time lapse between Visit-1 and SOL-INCA. We used regression models to test whether 1) persons with OSA, self-reported sleep duration, insomnia, and sleepiness have an increased risk for visual impairment, 2a) visual impairment is associated with worse cognitive function and/or decline, and 2b) sleep disorders attenuate these associations. Sleepiness (β= 0.04; p < 0.01) and insomnia (β= 0.04; p < 0.001) were cross-sectionally associated with visual impairment, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, behavioral factors, acculturation, and health conditions. Visual impairment was associated with lower global cognitive function at Visit-1 (β= -0.16; p < 0.001) and on average 7-years later (β= -0.18; p < 0.001). Visual impairment was also associated with a change in verbal fluency (β= -0.17; p < 0.01). OSA, self-reported sleep duration, insomnia, and sleepiness did not attenuate any of the associations. Self-reported visual impairment was independently associated with worse cognitive function and decline.

Association between myopia and anxiety: a cross-sectional study based on Chinese university freshmen.

At least 1 billion people are affected by blindness or vision impairment worldwide, and in China, the proportion of myopia among college students is even higher. Anxiety and self-harm are becoming more and more common among college students, which indicates the importance of paying attention to their mental health. Previous studies have demonstrated that vision impairment has a negative impact on the mental health of adults. However, few studies have focused on the effects of myopia on college freshmen's mental health, and the association between the two factors in college students remained elusive. This is a large cross-sectional study. A total of 5,519 college freshman would be assessed for the eligibility of the present study, and the inclusion criteria of this study were as follows: (I) first-year college student; (II) diagnosed as myopia and emmetropia through vision test; (III) gave informed consent. Five questionnaires were utilized to collect anxiety data, which include the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25), the Self Esteem Scale (SES), the Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SAD), for data collection. In addition, a socio-demographic questionnaire was designed and utilized to collect corresponding information. All enrollees were required to complete the all the above questionnaires. In total 4,984 college students were enrolled. The proportion of males is 60.43%, and the mean age was 19.8 years old. Both right and left vision had a statistically significant association with NEI-VFQ-25 score (P=0.006, r=0.070; and P=0.021, r=0.060, respectively; Pearson correlation analysis) and SAS score (P=0.003, r=0.075 and P=0.004, r=0.075, respectively; Pearson correlation analysis). However, the correlation coefficient was very low (all less than 0.1). No significant correlation was observed between eye vision and other questionnaire scores. Our data suggested that there is week correlation between myopia and anxiety. However, since this is a single-center study, the observed weak correlation may be caused by selection bias. Therefore, our results still need to be validated in further studies with a larger sample size.

Dry eye symptom questionnaires show adequate measurement precision and psychometric validity for clinical assessment of vision-related quality of life in glaucoma patients.

To ascertain the presence of Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) in patients being treated for glaucoma, using subjective and objective methods and to examine DES impact on their quality of life (QOL). A cross-sectional study was conducted by employing 156 glaucoma patients recruited from treatment centers in the Cape Coast Metropolis in Ghana. All the participants underwent dry eye examination and completed the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ), the Dry Eye-related Quality of Life Score (DEQS) and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Comparisons of the clinical tests, NEI VFQ-25 subscale item and composite scores and scores of DEQS and OSDI were made among subgroups divided according to the presence of dry eye symptoms or signs. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors that influence DES related-QOL among the patients. The study involved 156 subjects with a mean age of 47.88 ± 16.0 years and made up of 81 (51.9%) females and 75 (48.1%) males. A One-Way ANOVA was conducted, and the F-statistic (F) indicated that there was a significant difference in the mean scores of the groups. There were significantly lower Tear break-up time (TBUT) values found in the group with definite dry compared with the group without DES and the group that was symptomatic with no signs DES in both eyes, [(F(3,151) = 13.703, p<0.001 (RE): (F(3,152) = 18.992, p<0.001 (LE)]. Similar results were found for Schirmer test (ST) [(F (3,151) = 28.895, p<0.001 (RE): (F (3,152) = 17.410, p<0.001 (LE)]. There was statistically significant difference in the mean composite score (64.93 ± 20.27) for the NEI VFQ-25 and sub-scale score of ocular pain, which was significantly lower in the group with definite dry as compared to other sub-groups (F(3,152) = 4.559, p = 0.004). OSDI scores of the group with definite dry eye (47.69-19.17) and the group that was symptomatic but with no signs (38.90-22.44) were significantly higher than those without dry eye and those that were asymptomatic but had a sign (F(3,152) = 17.896, p<0.001), with a similar trend occurring in the groups with relation to DEQS scores (F(3,152) = 8.775, p<0.001). There was a strong correlation between the DEQS and the OSDI questionnaires, and a weak correlation between the DEQS and the NEI VFQ-25 questionnaire after adjusting for all other factors (all p < 0.01). The study established a high presence of DES and consequently low DES related-QOL in glaucoma patients. Dry eye questionnaires are able to discriminate those who have definite dry eye from the other groups, showing its appropriateness for clinical use in glaucoma patients. Ocular surface evaluation should be conducted among glaucoma patients on topical anti-glaucoma therapy to ensure the timely detection and treatment of signs and symptoms of DES and improvement of dry-eye related QOL.

Vision-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Keratoconus: A Nationwide Study in Saudi Arabia.

To evaluate the impact of keratoconus(KC) on quality of life and assess visual performance via the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ-25) in the Saudi population. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using the NEI-VFQ-25to evaluate the vision-related quality of life among previously diagnosed KC patients. An online questionnaire was used to distribute the validated survey through various social media networks. The data were extracted, reviewed, coded, and then analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). A total of 429 patients completed the questionnaire. The overall score of NEI-VFQ-25 was 58.6 (SD: 18.0). The visual performance was worse in females than males (with a score of 55.1), especially in patients aged less than 30 years. Visual function improved with the use of low-vision aids (spectacles and contact lenses) compared with those who did not use them. Our study confirms the functional impairment in patients with KC, especially in females, patients aged less than 30 years, and those with no low-vision aids. Moreover, it suggests a significant role of these vision aids (spectacles and contact lenses) in improving the quality of life in patients with KC.

Risk factors for poorer quality of life in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration: a longitudinal clinic-based study.

To examine the risk factors for poor vision-related and health-related quality of life (QoL) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) who present for anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy. In a clinic-based cohort of 547 nAMD patients who presented for treatment, the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NEI-VFQ25), Short-Form 36 (SF-36) and EuroQoL EQ-5D-5L questionnaires were administered to assess vision-related and health-related QoL. Of these, 83 participants were followed up one-year later to provide longitudinal data. Individuals with mild or moderate visual impairment or blindness at baseline had significantly lower NEI-VFQ-25 scores at follow-up. The presence of ≥3 chronic diseases was associated with lower SF-36 mental component scores (MCS) (p = 0.04) and EQ-VAS scores (p = 0.05). Depressive symptoms were associated with significantly lower MCS (p < 0.0001) and EQ-VAS scores (p = 0.02). Individuals with versus without impaired basic activities of daily living (ADLs) exhibited NEI-VFQ-25 and EQ-VAS scores that were 10.96 (p = 0.03) and 0.13 (p = 0.02) points lower. Those with impaired instrumental ADLs scored 11.62 (p = 0.02), 13.13 (p < 0.0001) and 15.8 (p = 0.0012) points lower in the NEI-VFQ-25, SF-36 physical component score and EQ-5D-5L summary score, respectively. The QoL of nAMD patients is affected by visual acuity as well as patients' medical history, mental health and functional status.

Vision-Related Quality of Life Among Healthy, Preperimetric Glaucoma, and Perimetric Glaucoma Patients

To investigate the association of vision-related quality of life (VRQOL) with the central visual field and macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness in healthy control participants, patients with preperimetric glaucoma, and patients with perimetric glaucoma. Retrospective cross-sectional study. A total of 39 healthy, 34 preperimetric glaucoma, and 145 perimetric glaucoma patients completed the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ). A linear mixed-effect models was used to investigate the association between the glaucoma stage as measured by binocular 10-2 visual field mean sensitivity (VFMS) and GCC thickness with the Rasch-calibrated NEI-VFQ score. A total of 436 eyes from 218 participants (mean age=67.2 [95% CI=65.1 to 69.2] years) were enrolled. VRQOL calculated by the NEI-VFQ Rasch-calibrated score was worst for patients with perimetric glaucoma (50.7 [95% CI=47.2 to 54.2]), followed by patients with preperimetric glaucoma (41.2 [95% CI=34.5 to 47.9]) and healthy controls (29.3 [95% CI=24.0 to 34.7]. Worse VRQOL had a moderate association with a worse global binocular 10-2 VFMS (-3.4 [95% CI=-5.0 to -1.9] dB per 1 score; P < .001; adjusted R2=0.27), but not with a thinner global GCC in the better eye (-0.1 [95% CI=-0.2 to 0.1] µm per 1 score; P =.0485; adjusted R2=0.17). These findings suggest that patients with perimetric and preperimetric glaucoma have worse VRQOL than patients with healthy eyes. As compared to macular thickness measurements, the central visual field is more strongly associated with VRQOL and may better help to identify patients in need of intervention.

Quality of life in glaucoma patients: Comparison of medical therapy, trabeculectomy, and glaucoma drainage device surgery.

To compare the quality of life (QoL) in patients with glaucoma on medical therapy and after trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage device (GDD) using vision, glaucoma, and surgery-specific questionnaires. This cross-sectional study enrolled 30 patients of moderate to severe glaucoma, each in medical, trabeculectomy, and GDD groups. National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEIVFQ-25), Glaucoma Quality of Life (GQL-15), and Surgery Specific Questionnaire (SSQ) were administered, and cumulative scores were compared. The mean age of the participants was 58.95 ± 13.6 years with a male preponderance (73.3%, n = 66). The mean scores (SD) in the medical, trabeculectomy, and GDD groups using NEIVFQ-25 were 68.97 (6.98), 72.83 (7.81), and 75.20 (8.77), respectively, those using GQL-15 were 20.63 (6.00), 26.23 (9.12), and 28.43 (7.74), respectively, and for the SSQ, they were 74.33 (8.75) and 72.10 (5.92) in trabeculectomy and GDD groups, respectively. NEIVFQ-25 showed a better QoL in the GDD group compared to the medical group, whereas GQL-15 showed a better QoL in the medical group and comparable QoL in trabeculectomy and GDD. Both these QoL scores correlated to the LogMAR visual acuity. SSQ scores did not show a significant difference in the QoL across both surgical groups. NEIVFQ-25 questionnaire scores provided a holistic measure of QoL. GQL-15 assessed the activity limitation and visual disability of the patients but did not take into account the general health and psychological factors influencing the QoL. We did not find a significant difference between trabeculectomy and GDD using the SSQ. For QoL assessment in medically or surgically treated glaucoma, vision-specific and disease-specific questionnaires should always be used in conjunction.

The influence of the topographic location of geographic atrophy on vision-related quality of life in nonexudative age-related macular degeneration.

To examine associations between the topographic distribution of geographic atrophy (GA) and vision-related quality of life (VRQoL). This study included 237 eyes from 161 participants in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). GA lesions were manually delineated with color fundus photographs obtained by the AREDS Research Group and atrophic area was measured in an Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid. VRQoL was measured using the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ). Area of atrophy in the ETDRS grid subfields was correlated with VRQoL by linear regression modeling. The average area of atrophy in the better and worse eye was 3.43mm2 and 7.15mm2 respectively. In multivariable analysis, VRQoL was not associated with total area of atrophy in the better eye(β, - 0.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], - 1.11 to 0.05; P = 0.07) or worse eye (β, 0.12; 95% CI, - 0.32 to 0.55; P = 0.59). However, area of atrophy in the central 1-mm-diameter zone of the better eye was significantly associated with VRQoL when the ETDRS subfields were examined individually (β, - 14.57; 95% CI, - 27.12 to - 2.02; P = 0.023), grouped into quadrants (β, - 18.35; 95% CI, - 30.03 to - 6.67; P = 0.002), inner and outer zones (β, - 17.26; 95% CI, - 29.38 to - 5.14; P = 0.006), or vertical and horizontal zones (β, - 18.97; 95% CI, - 30.18 to - 7.77; P = 0.001). In patients with GA, greater area of atrophy in the central 1-mm-diameter zone of the better eye was independently associated with lower VRQoL, while total area of atrophy in the better or worse eye was not.

Randomised, Single Blind, Controlled, Three-Month Clinical Trial on the Evaluation and Treatment of the Ocular Surface Damage Following Phacoemulsification.

Background: To determine efficacy of two lacrimal substitutes on signs and symptoms of ocular surface disease after phacoemulsification; to determine impact of surgery on patients’ vision related quality of life. Monocentric, randomised, physician blinded, three parallel groups clinical trial. Design and Methods: Patients in the operative list for phacoemulsification have been screened for eligibility; they underwent (at time 0, 15, 45 and 90 days): slit lamp examination; tear film break-up time (BUT); corneal staining; tear volume; 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ); Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Treatments to be compared were: 1. standard of care-SOC (lomefloxacine and tobramicine/dexamethasone fixed combination 4 times a day for 2 weeks), 2. SOC + carboxymethylcellulose sodium 0.5% and glycerin 0.9%, 3. SOC + Sodium Hyaluronate 0.15%. Study treatment started at T15. Groups were compared with parametric or nonparametric tests, and with Pearson’s χ2 test. Correlation between continuous variables was assessed by means of Pearson’s or Spearman’s coefficient. Results: Fifty-three patients were enrolled. At 45 and at 90 days from surgery, the group receiving lacrimal substitutes presented better BUT and Schirmer I test (p = 0.009, <0.001, <0.001 and 0.001, respectively); dry eye presence showed significant difference by group at time 90 (p = 0.019). General vision, near activity and vision-specific dependency subscales improved after surgery (p = <0.001, 0.004 and 0.048, respectively). At 45 and 90 days from surgery, the OSDI score significantly changed (p < 0.001).Conclusions: Cataract surgery causes the onset or the worsening of dry eye. Use of artificial tears can significantly reduce symptoms and signs of dry eye in patients after phacoemulsification.

Chinese Version of the Vision-Related Quality of Life (NEI-VFQ-25) among Patients with Various Ocular Disorders: A Pilot Study.

Background and Objectives: Subjective visual function is currently becoming an increasing appreciation in assessing the health-related quality of life. This study aimed to assess the vision-related quality of life (VRQOL) among patients with refractive errors, keratoconus, senile cataract, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using the Chinese version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI-VFQ-25). Materials and Methods: The questionnaire of NEI-VFQ-25 was filled out in a clinical setting or by telephone/mail. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine which factors are associated with the NEI-VFQ-25. Results: From June 2018 to January 2019, 28 patients with refractive error, 20 patients with keratoconus, 61 with senile cataracts, and 17 with AMD completed the questionnaire NEI-VFQ-25. There were significant differences in the NEI-VFQ-25 subscale of general vision (p = 0.0017), ocular pain (p = 0.0156), near activities (p = 0.0002), vision-specific social functioning (p = 0.007), vision-specific mental health (p = 0.0083), vision-specific dependency (p = 0.0049), color vision (p < 0.0001), peripheral vision (p = 0.0065), and total score (p < 0.0001) among four disease groups, respectively. The multiple linear regression revealed that the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and disease group were important factors of the total NEI-VFQ-25. After adjusting for BCVA, patients with AMD had a worse total NEI-VFQ-25 score than patients with refractive error, keratoconus, or senile cataracts. Conclusions: Among the patients with four ocular disorders and a broad vision spectrum from normal, partial sight, low vision to legal blindness, the BCVA of their better eye was the most important factor in the VRQOL.

Comparison of vision-related quality of life in patients with homonymous hemianopia and monocular blindness

To evaluate the vision-related quality of life (QoL) in patients with homonymous hemianopia (HH). The study compared the QoL in 32 patients with HH and 33 patients with monocular blindness. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and visual field test were investigated. The National Eye Institute-Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI VFQ-25) and independent mobility questionnaires (IMQs) were used to assess their perceived visual and physical functioning abilities. The results of QoL questionnaires were compared in two groups. The mean deviation (MD) in the better eye was significantly lower in the HH group than in the monocular blindness group. The composite scores of NEI-VFQ and IMQs were significantly lower in the HH patients than in the monocular blindness patients. The driving-related score was significantly lower in patients with right hemianopsia than in those with left hemianopsia. The outdoor activity-related score was significantly lower in patients aged less than 55 years than in patients aged 55 years and more. Homonymous hemianopia had a negative impact on patients’ QoL by limiting their vision related activities compared to monocular blindness. The MD of the better eye in the HH patients reflects the binocular visual field and can affect the real visual function and QoL.
