Synthesis of chitosan-grafted poly-acrylic acid (CTS-g-PAA) hydrogel and its potential application in biosensors for signal enhancing and bioanalysis.

Nowadays, hydrogels have been attracted a lot of interest due to their immense potential in different fields such as biomedicine and biotechnology. Biodegradable and biocompatible pH-sensitive chitosan-grafted polyacrylic acid (CTS-g-PAA) hydrogel was synthesized by grafting an acrylic acid monomer onto chitosan at the presence of methylene bisacrylamide as a cross-linking agent and ammonium persulphate as an initiator. FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the properties of the obtained hydrogel. The synthesized hydrogel is suitable for the delivery of many hydrophilic drugs or species. Using a multi-walled carbon nanotube modified-glassy carbon electrode (CNT-GCE), the loading and release conditions of Nile Blue (NB) as an electroactive compound were evaluated utilizing the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The effect of various parameters on the electrochemical signal of NB was investigated, and the optimal conditions for the efficient performance of hydrogel to delivery of NB were obtained. The electrocatalytic current values show linear dependence to NB concentration in the range of 0.098 – 0.971 μM while the detection limit of this electrochemical platform was 12.3 nM. The unique proposed hydrogel with the electroactive NB has a broad range of possible applications in biosensors for signal enhancement and bioanalysis.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10854-021-06939-7.

Cytochrome c/Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode for the Detection of Streptomycin in Pharmaceutical Samples.

A novel electrochemical glassy carbon electrode modified with a multi-walled carbon nanotube, cytochrome c (Cyt c) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) was fabricated to increase the sensitivity of electrode for the detection of streptomycin (STN) in certain pharmaceutical samples. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry techniques were used for an electrochemical characterization of the electrode. Furthermore, the electrochemical biosensor construction phases were examined by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Under the optimal experimental conditions, the electrode offers a high selectivity and sensitivity signaling in the co-existence method of STN with the linear concentration ranging from 0.02 to 2.2 μM. The detection limits (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found to be 0.0028 and 0.0562 μM, respectively. The fabricated sensing electrode has good stability, reproducibility and sensitivity towards STN in the pharmaceutical samples. Preliminary determinations of binding sites within the specified grid box size, which covers both Cyt c and STN, were done by molecular docking analysis. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed to provide insightful information into the optimized geometry of STN.

Electrochemical Determination of Dopamine at Pre-Anodized Helical Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

In this article we electrochemically investigated the determination of dopamine (DA) at pre-anodized helical multi-walled carbon nanotubes (H-MWCNTs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The pre-anodized H-MWCNTs/GCE could catalyze DA redox reaction greatly, and the oxidation current of DA from DPV measurement on pre-anodized H-MWCNTs/GCE was about 25 time bigger than on GCE. Furthermore, the pre-anodized H-MWCNTs/GCE could separate the oxidation peak potentials of DA, ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA) with well-defined peak separation as 164 mV for DA and UA, and 208 mV for DA and AA. The calibration curves of DA were obtained linearly in the range of 1 × 10−7 ∼ 2 × 10−6 M and 6 × 10−5 ∼ 2 × 10−4 M with the limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) and the limit of quantification (LOQ, S/N = 10) as 2.1 × 10−8 M and 7.0 × 10−8 M respectively. The sensor had been applied for DA measurement in dopamine injection samples with satisfactory results.

Gold Nanoparticles–Fe3O4 Beads/multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode as a Sensing Platform for the Electrocatalytic Determination of Loratadine in Biological Fluids

ABSTARCT: The glassy carbon electrode was modified by gold nanoparticles (AuNps)–Fe₃O₄ beads/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Surface morphology characterization of the bare and modified electrodes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy technique. This modified glassy carbon electrode was applied for electro-catalytic determination of loratadine. The modified electrode lowered the reduction overpotential of loratadine with the enhancement of its peak current; this behavior was attributed to the electro-catalytic activity of the modified electrode toward loratadine electro-reduction. Various parameters, such as pH of the working solution, amounts of MWCNTs, Fe₃O₄ beads and AuNps affecting the electrochemical performance of the modified electrode toward loratadine determination were optimized. The linear response of the modified electrode toward loratadine concentration using hydrodynamic amperometry method was between 0.05–5 μM with a detection limit of 0.04 μM (S/N = 3). The modified electrode figures of merit were high repeatability, reproducibility, long-term life time and low response time (<3 s). The practicability of this proposed method was examined by loratadine content quantification in commercial pharmaceutical samples, human blood serum and urine samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

Amperometric Ascorbic Acid Sensor Based on Disposable Facial Tissues Derived Carbon Aerogels

In this study, the disposable facial tissues derived carbon aerogels(DFTs-CAs) were synthesized using disposable facial tissues as the raw material for fabricating a sensitive amperometric ascorbic acid(AA) sensor. The experimental results indicated that compared to glassy carbon electrode(GCE) and the popular carbon nanotubes modified GCE(CNTs/GCE), DFTs-CAs modified GCE(DFTs-CAs/GCE) exhibited better electrocatalytic activity(i.e., lower peak potential and higher peak current) for AA electrooxidation and higher analytical performance for AA determination(i.e., wider linear range, higher sensitivity and lower detection limit), which could be most likely due to the high density of defective sites and large specific surface area of DFTs-CAs. Especially, the DFTs-CAs/GCE was used for evaluating the AA level in real samples(i.e., medical injection dose, vitamin C tablets, fresh orange juice and human urine) and the results are satisfactory.

Synthesis of a three-dimensional interconnected carbon nanorod aerogel from wax gourd for amperometric sensing.

The authors describe a method for synthesis of a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected carbon nanorod aerogel (3D-ICNA) starting from wax gourd (Benincasa hispida) which is a low-cost biomass. The 3D-ICNA possesses unique 3D interconnected and porous nanostructure, with abundant edge-plane-like defective sites, a large specific surface area (823m2g-1) and a large pore volume (0.12cm3g-1). This makes the material attractive in terms of electrochemical sensing. To validate the feasibility, the voltammetric response towards ferricyanide, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), acetaminophen, ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine, uric acid and epinephrine was investigated by using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with 3D-ICNA. The modified GCE shows higher electron-transfer capacity than a conventional GCE. In addition, as an electrochemical sensor for AA or H2O2, the electrode exhibits better analytical performance with lower detection limit [3.5μM for AA or 0.68μM for H2O2 based on 3σ/m criterion (where σ is the standard deviation of the blank and m is the slope of the calibration plot)], wider linear range and higher sensitivity (0.14, 0.11 and 0.080μAμM-1cm-2 for AA or 0.24 and 0.20μAμM-1cm-2 for H2O2) compared to a plain GCE or a carbon nanotube-modified GCE. The modified GCE exhibits a large potential for the amperometric determination of AA or H2O2 in real samples. Graphical abstract By employing the biomass of wax gourd (Benincasa hispida) as the precursor, a three-dimensional interconnected carbon nanorod aerogel was prepared. It is shown to be a viable material for the construction of an advanced electrochemical sensor for H2O2 and ascorbic acid.

Low-cost and environment-friendly synthesis of carbon nanorods assembled hierarchical meso-macroporous carbons networks aerogels from natural apples for the electrochemical determination of ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide

In this work, the low-cost carbon nanorods assembled hierarchical meso-macroporous carbons networks aerogels (CNs-HMCNAs) was environment-friendly synthesized from a cheap and abundant biomass of apples (Malus pumila Mill) for the first time. The biomass of apples derived CNs-HMCNAs exhibited the unique hierarchical meso-macroporous structure with large specific surface area and high density of edge defective sites. At the CNs-HMCNAs modified GCE (CNs-HMCNAs/GCE), the electron transfer between the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and the ascorbic acid (AA) (or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)) was effectively enhanced, and thus induced a low overvoltage for AA electrooxidation (or H2O2 electroreduction). As an electrochemical AA (or H2O2) sensor, the CNs-HMCNAs/GCE exhibited wider linear range, lower detection limit, higher sensitivity and stability than GCE and the carbon nanotubes modified GCE (CNTs/GCE). In particular, the CNs-HMCNAs/GCE showed great potential feasibility in the practical determination of AA (in AA injection, Vitamin C tablet and kiwi juice) or H2O2 (in human urine, milk and beer).

Amperometric sensing of ascorbic acid by using a glassy carbon electrode modified with mesoporous carbon nanorods

Mesoporous carbon nanorods (MCNRs) were prepared from honey as the carbon source and by using crab (Brachyuran) shells as the hard template. The unique nanostructure of the MCNRs with their uniform mesoporous size, abundant defective sites and numerous oxygen-functional groups was characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammograms of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with MCNRs revel a higher peak current density and lower peak potential (-0.03V vs. Ag/AgCl) for ascorbic acid (AA) electrooxidation compared to a conventional GCE and a carbon nanotube-modified GCE. Figures of merit for this sensor include (a) a wide linear range (10-2770μM), (b) high electrochemical sensitivity (216.91μAmM-1cm-2) and (c) a low detection limit (2.3μM). These compare favorably to the respective data for a CNT-modified GCE (50-2150μM, 5.20μAmM-1cm-2 and 26.8μM) and a plain GCE (100-2000μM, 0.58μAmM-1cm-2 and 54.6μM). The modified GCE was successfully applied to the determination of AA in (spiked) real samples including an injection, soft drinks and fresh lemon juice. Therefore, the new sensor can be considered as an affordable tool for electrochemical sensing of AA in real samples. Biomass waste derived carbon nanoballs aggregation networks-based aerogels as electrode material for electrochemical sensing

In this work, we reported the synthesis of carbon nanoballs aggregation networks-based aerogels (CNANAs) from the biomass waste of shaddock (Citrus maxima) peels for the first time. On the basis of the unique nanostructure of CNANAs with large surface area (446.39 m2 g−1), hierarchical pores (centered at 2, 12 and 87 nm) and high density of edge-plane-like defective sites (EPDSs), the CNANAs as a kind of advanced electrode material exhibited remarkable performance in electrocatalysis. Compared to carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (CNTs/GCE) and glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the CNANAs modified GCE (CNANAs/GCE) showed higher electrocatalytic activities towards some important inorganic and organic molecules, such as the probe molecule of potassium ferricyanide, the oxidase-related molecule of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the neurotransmitters of dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Based on the superior electrocatalytic activities, the CNANAs/GCE exhibited a wider determination linear range (5–1760 μmol L−1), a higher sensitivity (42.4 μA mmol L−1 cm−2) and a lower detection limit (3.53 μmol L−1) than those at CNTs/GCE and GCE for H2O2 detection. Especially, the CNANAs/GCE also showed great potential for the H2O2 determination in human urine and serum samples. The utilization of environmentally-friendly biomass waste of the shaddock peels as the raw material is a promising way to synthesize low-cost and advanced carbon based electrode material for electrochemical sensors construction.

Cost-effective synthesis of three-dimensional nitrogen-doped nanostructured carbons with hierarchical architectures from the biomass of sea-tangle for the amperometric determination of ascorbic acid

In this work, the three-dimensional nitrogen-doped nanostructured carbons with hierarchical architectures (3D-NNCsHAs) with high density of defective sites, high surface area and pluralities of pore size distributions was prepared through the pyrolysis of sea-tangle (Laminaria japonica), an inexpensive, eco-friendly and abundant precursor. Benefitting from their structural uniqueness, a selective and sensitive ascorbic acid (AA) sensor based on 3D-NNCsHAs was developed. Compared to the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and the carbon nanotubes modified GCE (CNTs/GCE), the 3D-NNCsHAs modified GCE (3D-NNCsHAs/GCE) presents higher performance towards the electrocatalysis and detection of AA, such as lower detection limit (1 μM), wider linear range (10–4410 μM) and lower electrooxidation peak potential (−0.02 V vs. Ag/AgCl). In addition, 3D-NNCsHAs/GCE also exhibits high anti-interference and anti-fouling abilities for AA detection. Particularly, the fabricated 3D-NNCsHAs/GCE is able to determine AA in real samples and the results acquired are satisfactory. Therefore, the 3D-NNCsHAs can be considered as a kind of novel electrode nanomaterial for the fabrication of selective and sensitive AA sensor for the extensive practical applications ranging from food analysis, to pharmaceutical industry and clinical test.

Electrocatalytic Oxidation and Determination of Insulin at Rhodamine B –Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

The modified electrode surface was provided with the electropolymerization of the rhodamine B in the presence of carbon nanotube (CNT). The modified electrode offers dramatic improvements in the stability and sensitivity of voltammetric measurements of insulin compared to the bare and rhodamine B modified glassy carbon electrodes. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards insulin is indicated from lowering the potential of the oxidation process (starting around 0.75 vs. Ag/AgCl) and the substantially higher sensitivity over the entire potential range. A linear dynamic range (100–600nM) was achieved with a detection limit of 5nM. The accuracy of the modified electrode was indicated by insulin recovery test in the real samples as human plasma and pharmaceutical samples.
