Generation of high-order optical vortices with nanostructured phase masks

We report theoretical and experimental studies on generation of high-order optical vortex beams using fiber-based nanostructured gradient index converters. The components were made of two types of in-house developed soft glasses with lead, bismuth, gallium compositions to ensure the high refractive contrast of the synthesized glasses. As a result, the vortex components, fabricated using the stack-and-draw method, allow converting Gaussian beam into vortex beams with high-order topological charges in the visible and near-infrared regions. We experimentally verified the formation of optical vortex beams with topological charge up to 5 by using the free-space binary-nanostructured vortex components. In addition, the vortex converter integrated into the standard fiber tip generated optical vortex beams with topological charge up to 4.

Broadband optical vortex beam generation using flat-surface nanostructured gradient index vortex phase masks

We developed a new kind of compact flat-surface nanostructured gradient index vortex phase mask, for the effective generation of optical vortex beams in broadband infrared wavelength range. A low-cost nanotechnological material method was employed for this work. The binary structure component consists of 17,557 nano-sized rods made of two lead–bismuth–gallium silicate glasses which were developed in-house. Those small rods are spatially arranged in such a way that, according to effective medium theory, the refractive index of this internal structure is constant in the radial direction and linearly changes following azimuthal angle. Numerical results demonstrated that a nanostructured vortex phase mask with a thickness of 19 μm can convert Gaussian beams into fundamental optical vortices over 290 nm wavelength bandwidth from 1275 to 1565 nm. This has been confirmed in experiments using three diode laser sources operating at 1310, 1550, and 1565 nm. The generation of vortex beams is verified through their uniform doughnut-like intensity distributions, clear astigmatic transformation patterns, and spiral as well as fork-like interferograms. This new flat-surface component can be directly mounted to an optical fiber tip for simplifying vortex generator systems as well as easier manipulation of the generated OVB in three-dimensional space.

All-fiber nanostructured gradient optics vortex beam converter

We study optical performance of a vortex beam converter comprising a nanostructured gradient index vortex mask, a compact gradient index microlens and an optical fiber. The converter generates high quality focused optical vortex from the input Gaussian beam without support of any additional external optical elements. Integration of a nanostructured lens allows control of the size and the position of focus of vortex beams, while at the same time maintaining their quality. This confirms that nanostructured gradient index micro-optical components can be used sequentially to form complex optical systems and maintain full compatibility with fiber optics. Our experimental results are supported by numerical simulations.

Fiber microprobe with integrated gradient index vortex mask

Novel fiber microprobe comprising a nanostructured gradient index optical vortex phase mask and single-mode fiber was investigated numerically and experimentally. The mask which, consists of spatially distributed sub-wavelength nanorods, was fabricated via the modified stack-and-draw fiber drawing technique. The mask has flat input and output surfaces and transverse dimensions of a standard single-mode fiber. The microprobe allows efficient generation of high-quality optical vortex beams in different environments such as air and water.

Numerical analysis of optical vortices generation with nanostructured phase masks.

We study the theoretical formation of optical vortices using a nanostructured gradient index phase mask. We consider structures composed of spatially distributed thermally matched glass nanorods with high and low refractive indices. Influence of effective refractive profile distribution, refractive index contrast of component glasses and charge value on the quality of generation of vortices are discussed. A trade-off between waveguiding and phase modulation effects for various refractive index contrast is presented and analysed.

Optical characterization of single nanostructured gradient index vortex phase masks fabricated by the modified stack-and-draw technique

The optical performance of nanostructured gradient index vortex phase masks (VPMs) in various external media was investigated. We utilized a modified stack-and-draw technique to fabricate the microscopic-size masks. Its structure contains spatially distributed sub-wavelength rods made of two thermally matched glasses with high and low refractive indices. Measured optical characteristics of the generated vortices with azimuthal phase distribution are presented. The numerical and experimental study shows that such VPMs with the same designed structure but varied thickness can convert fundamental light beam into optical vortices with different charges. Furthermore, we found that the mask performance is unaffected by the refractive index of the surrounding media making it an excellent candidate for microfluidic applications.

Light field camera based on hexagonal array of flat-surface nanostructured GRIN lenses.

In this paper we present a light field camera system where a flat-surface hexagonal array of nanostructured gradient index lenses was used as a lens matrix. In our approach we use an array of 469 gradient index microlenses with a diameter of 20 µm and 100% fill factor. To develop the single lens and the lenslet array we used a modified stack-and-draw technology. In this technique, variation of refractive index is achieved by using quantized gradient index profiles and rods from different types of glasses. We show experimental results of using this type of lenses for imaging in a system of two kinds of light field cameras. In the first one, the microlens array is located in the focal plane of the main lens. The image is reconstructed, in this case using a Fourier slice photography algorithm. This allowed a partial reconstruction of a 3D scene with spatial and depth resolution of 20 µm and field of view of 500×500×500 µm. In the second configuration, the microlens array is located between a sample and a microscopic objective, thus allowing for superresolution 3D reconstruction of a microscopic image. The scale-invariant feature transform method was used for image reconstruction and obtained a partial 3D reconstruction with a field of view of 150×115×80 µm and a spatial resolution of 2 µm and depth resolution of 10 µm.

Formation of optical vortices with all-glass nanostructured gradient index masks.

We report the development of microscopic size gradient index vortex masks using the modified stack-and-draw technique. The vortex mask has a form of flat surface all-glass plate. Its functionality is determined by an internal nanostructure composed of two types of soft glass nanorods. The generation of optical vortices with charges 1 and 2 is demonstrated.

High resolution Shack-Hartmann sensor based on array of nanostructured GRIN lenses.

We present a novel method for the development of a micro lenslets hexagonal array. We use gradient index (GRIN) micro lenses where the variation of the refraction index is achieved with a structure of nanorods made of 2 types of glasses. To develop the GRIN micro lens array, we used a modified stack-and-draw technology which was originally applied for the fabrication of photonic crystal fibers. This approach results in a completely flat element that is easy to integrate with other optical components and can be effectively used in high refractive index medium as liquids. As a proof-of-concept of the method we present a hexagonal array of 469 GRIN micro lenses with a diameter of 20 µm each and 100% fill factor. The GRIN lens array is further used to build a Shack-Hartmann detector for measuring wavefront distortion. A 50 lens/mm sampling density is achieved.

Compact plasmonic optical biosensors based on nanostructured gradient index lenses integrated into microfluidic cells.

We report on a compact and cost-effective integrated label-free biosensor configuration which is based on the refractive index sensitivity of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanostructures. Aiming for compactification and miniaturization of the sensor, arrays of nanodiscs were fabricated on the planar surface of a gradient index (GRIN) lens, which acts as a substrate as well as an imaging objective for the light scattered by the gold structures. Integration of the lens into a microfluidic flow cell enabled the controlled exchange of liquid media at the sensor surface. The light scattered by the nanostructures was investigated spatially and spectrally resolved making use of the imaging properties of the GRIN lens. Dynamic spectral analysis during refractive index changes was conducted, revealing high sensitivities of up to 372 nm per refractive index unit for the shift of the LSPR. Biosensing capabilities were demonstrated by the detection of binding of an analyte by means of a testosterone-immunoassay.

World-smallest fiber-GRIN lens system for optofluidic applications

We have developed a new type of an optical fiber probe which integrates the standard single mode fiber with a gradient index (GRIN) microlens. The system is perfectly suited for optofluidic sensor applications since the diameter of the lens module is exactly the same as the diameter of the optical fiber. Moreover, the performance of the GRIN lens is not degraded by low contrast of the refractive index between of the lens and the fluidic environment. Nanostructured gradient index microaxicons made by a modified stack and draw method.

We report the design and fabrication of nanostructured gradient index microaxicons suitable for integration with optical fibers. A structure with the effective refractive index decreasing linearly from the center to the edges (i.e., an axicon) was designed using a combination of a simulated annealing method and the effective medium theory. The design was verified numerically with beam propagation method simulations. The axicons were made by the modified stack and draw method and integrated with optical fibers. The optical properties of the fabricated elements were measured and showed good agreement with the numerical simulations. The fabricated axicons produced an extended line focus at a distance from about 70 to 160 μm from the lens facet with a minimum FWHM diameter of 8 μm at 90 μm. At smaller distances, an interference pattern is observed both in the experiment and in simulations, which is attributed to the uneven effective refractive index profile at the structure.

Soft glasses for photonic crystal fibers and microstructured optical components

Thermally stable tellurite, lead-bismuth-gallium oxides based boron-silicate and lead-silicate glasses dedicated for multiple thermal processing are presented. The glasses are successfully used for the development of photonic crystal fibers, nanostructured gradient index lenses, all-solid microstructured fibers as well as refractive or diffractive micro-optical elements with ultra-broadband transmission.

Modelling of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser beam collimation using a nanostructured gradient index microlens

In this paper we show that the recently developed nanostructured gradient index (nGRIN) rod microlens can be utilised for the collimation of the beam generated by a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The modelling of the nanostructured lens structure is performed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with realistic nGRIN parameters and a Gaussian model of the light source. The large refractive index gradient of the nanostructured microlens allows the final microlens thickness to be only 70 μm with a diameter of 10 μm. Successful collimation of a single-mode VCSEL beam with a waist half-width of 1.53 μm is presented with a reduction in divergence half-angle from 10.1° to 3.3°. We show that the linear polarisation of the incident beam is preserved as well as presenting the tolerance of this type of lens to variations in overall thickness.

Large diameter nanostructured gradient index lens

In this paper we report on the development and optical properties of nanostructured gradient index microlenses with good chromatic behavior. We introduce a new fabrication concept for the development of large diameter nanostructured gradient index microlenses based on quantized gradient index profiles and the use of nanostructured meta-rods. We show a dependence of the quality of performance on the number of refractive index levels and the lens diameter. Measurements carried out at 633 and 850 nm show good optical properties and similar focal lengths for both wavelengths.

Focusing a Gaussian beam in nanostructured non-periodic GRIN microlenses

Modeling the propagation of a Gaussian beam in a nanostructured gradient index microlens is reported. The nanostructured GRIN microlens is composed of subwavelength discrete dielectric rods. We compare the performance of nanostructured gradient index microlenses against conventional GRIN microlenses for Gaussian beam focusing. Nanostructured elliptical gradient-index microlenses

We show theoretical and experimental characterizations of a nanostructured gradient-index lens. The elliptical lens is a nonguiding element fabricated using the mosaic method, which is widely used for the fabrication of photonic crystal fibers. For the first time we show experimental data in the optics regime that confirm the effective medium approximation for discrete mosaic structures with subwavelength feature size. This opens the door for the development of general asymmetric gradient-index materials.

Nanostructured GRIN microlenses for Gaussian beam focusing

Gaussian beam propagation through a novel high refractive index contrast nanostructured Gradient-Index (GRIN) microlens with an arbitrary refractive index distribution is investigated. The concept of the nanostructured GRIN microlenses is based on the effective medium theory and we show numerically, using the FDTD method, that nanostructured GRIN microlenses can focus Gaussian beams in an identical manner to conventional GRIN microlenses. Nanostructured GRIN microlenses have a reduced thickness by almost two orders of magnitude compared to conventional GRIN lenses. We also investigate the accuracy of the standard scalar and paraxial GRIN theory in the case of a very high contrast nanostructured GRIN microlens. The paraxial GRIN lens theory is shown only to give an approximate description of Gaussian beam propagation in such a high contrast nanostructured GRIN microlens.

Design and fabrication of nano-structured gradient index microlenses

We present a novel fabrication technology for nano-structured graded index micro-optical components, based on the stack-and-draw method used for photonic crystal fibres. These discrete structures can be described with an effective refractive index distribution. Furthermore we present spherical nano-structured microlenses with a flat facet fabricated with this method and designed using an algorithm based on the Maxwell-Garnett mixing formula. Finally we show theoretical verification by using FDTD simulations for a nano-structured lens as well as experimental data obtained in the microwave regime.

Nanostructured gradient index optical filter for high-speed humidity sensing

A high-speed optical humidity sensor was fabricated from a nanostructured titanium dioxide thin film. A refractive index depth profile designed to yield a narrow-bandpass optical interference filter was obtained through nanoscale porosity variations produced by a physical vapor deposition technique known as glancing angle deposition (GLAD). The GLAD process provides film morphology control on the 10 nm scale through a combination of deposition at highly oblique vapor incidence angles and controlled substrate motion. Under varying humidity conditions the transmittance spectrum of the filter shifts due to effective index changes of the porous structure resulting from water vapor adsorption/desorption. Performance analysis has shown that this device is highly sensitive, exhibits minimal hysteresis, and is extremely fast. The adsorption and desorption response times were measured to be 270 ms and 160 ms, respectively.
