Upcycling Food Waste into Biomaterials Applicable to Medical Products

Globally, an estimated 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted each year, according to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. A variety of waste streams constantly generate large amounts of food waste that end up in landfills. As food waste is left to naturally decay in landfills, it emits greenhouse gases that pollute the environment and induce climate change. However, most types of food waste contain valuable components that can be extracted to manufacture industrial products. Therefore, instead of abandoning food waste to decay and harm the environment, there is an alternative to upcycle it as a new raw materials supply source. This review provides a comprehensive update on how environmental sustainability can be improved using diverse types of food waste as sources to generate biomaterials for fabricating medical products, including lignin, cellulose, chitosan, pectin, collagen, hydroxyapatite, and biodegradable polymers. The review also highlights biochemical technologies applied for extracting useful components from food waste and details the current advances for developing medical products, including wound dressings and nanoparticles for tissue engineering and drug delivery.

Potential Biomedical Applications of Terbium-Based Nanoparticles (TbNPs): A Review on Recent Advancement.

The scientific world is increasingly focusing on rare earth metal oxide nanomaterials due to their consequential biological prospects, navigated by breakthroughs in biomedical applications. Terbium belongs to rare earth elements (lanthanide series) and possesses remarkably strong luminescence at lower energy emission and signal transduction properties, ushering in wide applications for diagnostic measurements (i.e., bioimaging, biosensors, fluorescence imaging, etc.) in the biomedical sectors. In addition, the theranostic applications of terbium-based nanoparticles further permit the targeted delivery of drugs to the specific site of the disease. Furthermore, the antimicrobial properties of terbium nanoparticles induced via reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause oxidative damage to the cell membrane and nuclei of living organisms, ion release, and surface charge interaction, thus further creating or exhibiting excellent antioxidant characteristics. Moreover, the recent applications of terbium nanoparticles in tissue engineering, wound healing, anticancer activity, etc., due to angiogenesis, cell proliferation, promotion of growth factors, biocompatibility, cytotoxicity mitigation, and anti-inflammatory potentials, make this nanoparticle anticipate a future epoch of nanomaterials. Terbium nanoparticles stand as a game changer in the realm of biomedical research, proffering a wide array of possibilities, from revolutionary imaging techniques to advanced drug delivery systems. Their unique properties, including luminescence, magnetic characteristics, and biocompatibility, have redefined the boundaries of what can be achieved in biomedicine. This review primarily delves into various mechanisms involved in biomedical applications via terbium-based nanoparticles due to their physicochemical characteristics. This review article further explains the potential biomedical applications of terbium nanoparticles with in-depth significant mechanisms from the individual literature. This review additionally stands as the first instance to furnish a "single-platted" comprehensive acquaintance of terbium nanoparticles in shaping the future of healthcare as well as potential limitations and overcoming strategies that require exploration before being trialed in clinical settings.

Hydrogelated Virus Nanoparticles in Tissue Engineering

Abstract: Hydrogels are an integrated three-dimensional network of water-absorbing hydrophilic polymers that can support tissue regeneration and release medication under controlled conditions. Hydrogel-based structures physically resemble the extracellular matrix besides being effective for biomedical applications and tissue engineering. Hydrogels must provide relevant biological signals to control the cell behavior to become an ideal bioactive scaffold for tissue regeneration. Incorporating virus nanoparticles (VNP) that can release essential peptides into the hydrogels is a promising option to formulate a bioactive scaffold that can facilitate cell proliferation, adhesion, migration, and differentiation. Over the recent period, virologists have discovered many viruses that lead to a great understanding of the diversity of viruses in nature. Viruses affecting the plants are called plant viruses, and they have a wide variety of shapes and sizes, yet each species produces monodisperse nucleoprotein particles. Plant viruses are not capable of infecting or reproducing in humans. Therefore, VNPs are engineered from plant viruses whose genetically programmed structures can be manipulated at the gene level, bioconjugated, or encapsulated. Plant VNPs can act as clinical diagnostic agents, immunomodulators, medicines, nanoreactors, and biosensors by displaying protein molecules or epitopes, constructing inorganic hybrid materials, or carrying molecular charges. The present review focuses on the plant virusmediated nanoparticles encapsulated in bioactive hydrogels to provide an ideal platform for tissue engineering.

Smart Electrospun Hybrid Nanofibers Functionalized with Ligand-Free Titanium Nitride (TiN) Nanoparticles for Tissue Engineering.

Herein, we report the fabrication and characterization of novel polycaprolactone (PCL)-based nanofibers functionalized with bare (ligand-free) titanium nitride (TiN) nanoparticles (NPs) for tissue engineering applications. Nanofibers were prepared by a newly developed protocol based on the electrospinning of PCL solutions together with TiN NPs synthesized by femtosecond laser ablation in acetone. The generated hybrid nanofibers were characterised using spectroscopy, microscopy, and thermal analysis techniques. As shown by scanning electron microscopy measurements, the fabricated electrospun nanofibers had uniform morphology, while their diameter varied between 0.403 ± 0.230 µm and 1.1 ± 0.15 µm by optimising electrospinning solutions and parameters. Thermal analysis measurements demonstrated that the inclusion of TiN NPs in nanofibers led to slight variation in mass degradation initiation and phase change behaviour (Tm). In vitro viability tests using the incubation of 3T3 fibroblast cells in a nanofiber-based matrix did not reveal any adverse effects, confirming the biocompatibility of hybrid nanofiber structures. The generated hybrid nanofibers functionalized with plasmonic TiN NPs are promising for the development of smart scaffold for tissue engineering platforms and open up new avenues for theranostic applications.

Application of Nanoparticles of Ceramics, Peptides, Silicon, Carbon, and Diamonds in Tissue Engineering

This review purports to fill the gap in knowledge that exists about the role of nanoparticles in Tissue Engineering. In this review, the use of the term nanoparticles will be exclusively confined to those materials or composites with grain sizes ranging from 100-500 nm. First, a brief description of the field will be provided. Next, research findings on the use of cells on ceramics, peptides, carbon, silicon, and diamond, will be scrutinized. Then, future applications and directions will be outlined. Finally, a succinct account will summarize some of the developments in the field of Tissue Engineering involving nanoparticles.

Use of Nanoparticles in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

Advances in nanoparticle (NP) production and demand for control over nanoscale systems have had significant impact on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM). NPs with low toxicity, contrasting agent properties, tailorable characteristics, targeted/stimuli-response delivery potential, and precise control over behavior (via external stimuli such as magnetic fields) have made it possible their use for improving engineered tissues and overcoming obstacles in TERM. Functional tissue and organ replacements require a high degree of spatial and temporal control over the biological events and also their real-time monitoring. Presentation and local delivery of bioactive (growth factors, chemokines, inhibitors, cytokines, genes etc.) and contrast agents in a controlled manner are important implements to exert control over and monitor the engineered tissues. This need resulted in utilization of NP based systems in tissue engineering scaffolds for delivery of multiple growth factors, for providing contrast for imaging and also for controlling properties of the scaffolds. Depending on the application, materials, as polymers, metals, ceramics and their different composites can be utilized for production of NPs. In this review, we will cover the use of NP systems in TERM and also provide an outlook for future potential use of such systems.

Nanoparticles in tissue engineering: applications, challenges and prospects.

Tissue engineering (TE) is an interdisciplinary field integrating engineering, material science and medical biology that aims to develop biological substitutes to repair, replace, retain, or enhance tissue and organ-level functions. Current TE methods face obstacles including a lack of appropriate biomaterials, ineffective cell growth and a lack of techniques for capturing appropriate physiological architectures as well as unstable and insufficient production of growth factors to stimulate cell communication and proper response. In addition, the inability to control cellular functions and their various properties (biological, mechanical, electrochemical and others) and issues of biomolecular detection and biosensors, all add to the current limitations in this field. Nanoparticles are at the forefront of nanotechnology and their distinctive size-dependent properties have shown promise in overcoming many of the obstacles faced by TE today. Despite tremendous progress in the use of nanoparticles over the last 2 decades, the full potential of the applications of nanoparticles in solving TE problems has yet to be realized. This review presents an overview of the diverse applications of various types of nanoparticles in TE applications and challenges that need to be overcome for nanotechnology to reach its full potential.

Nanoparticles for bone tissue engineering.

Tissue engineering (TE) envisions the creation of functional substitutes for damaged tissues through integrated solutions, where medical, biological, and engineering principles are combined. Bone regeneration is one of the areas in which designing a model that mimics all tissue properties is still a challenge. The hierarchical structure and high vascularization of bone hampers a TE approach, especially in large bone defects. Nanotechnology can open up a new era for TE, allowing the creation of nanostructures that are comparable in size to those appearing in natural bone. Therefore, nanoengineered systems are now able to more closely mimic the structures observed in naturally occurring systems, and it is also possible to combine several approaches - such as drug delivery and cell labeling - within a single system. This review aims to cover the most recent developments on the use of different nanoparticles for bone TE, with emphasis on their application for scaffolds improvement; drug and gene delivery carriers, and labeling techniques. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles in tissue engineering--a perspective.

In this review, we summarize the latest developments and give a perspective on future applications of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) in regenerative medicine. MSNs constitute a flexible platform for controlled delivery of drugs and imaging agents in tissue engineering and stem cell therapy. We highlight the recent advances in applying MSNs for controlled drug delivery and stem cell tracking. We touch upon novel functions of MSNs in real time imaging of drug release and biological function, and as tools to control the chemical and mechanical environment of stem cells. We discuss the need for novel model systems for studying biofunctionality and biocompatibility of MSNs, and how the interdisciplinary activities within the field will advance biotechnology research.

Investigating composite systems based on poly l -lactide and poly l -lactide/triclosan nanoparticles for tissue engineering and medical applications

In this study, the encapsulated triclosan with a low molecular weight PLLA (LATC30) is dispersed into a PLLA having higher molecular weight via melt blending to increase the overall properties and particularly antibacterial activity of the system. The proposed method results in a completely homogenous composite as 5% LATC30 improved mechanical properties. For instance, the elongation at break was increased ca. 3%. The mechanical properties of the fabricated composites were also affected by the plasticizing role of LATC30. The kinetics of hydrolytic degradation in an accelerated condition was obtained using a novel method by the Beer-Lambert equation. It was found that the incorporation of LATC30 into the composite increases the rate of hydrolytic degradation. The calorimetry showed a reduction in crystallinity upon addition of LATC30. Moreover, the degradation of the composites was studied and fully described the kinetic analysis by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method. From which, it was found that the activation energy of the system was decreased. As the LATC30 content of the composite was increased, the hydrophilicity of the composite was increased. The fabricated scaffolds with 5% LATC30 demonstrated a good osteoblast cell attachment and mineralization on the composite scaffolds. This composite is a suitable antibacterial candidate for the bone tissue engineering and medical applications since the real dosage of triclosan stays at ca. 1.5%.

Application of Magnetic Nanoparticles in Tissue Engineering

On account of its unique physicochemical properties, magnetic nanoparticles attracts many attentions in its applications of tissue engineering. Here, we briefly described two major characteristics of magnetic nanoparticles, surface chemical activity and the magnetic properties. The main synthesis methods of magnetic nanoparticles in biomedicine was included. Based on the two major characteristics of magnetic nanoparticles, we mainly reviewed methods of the designing biomaterials in tissue engineering and the assembling growth factors or genes released vector. We also summarized the research progress of mechanical stimulation, stem cell labeling, tracking and cell patterning on the magnetic nanoparticles construction in this paper.

The effect of process parameters on the size and morphology of poly(D,L‐lactide‐co‐glycolide) micro/nanoparticles prepared by an oil in oil emulsion/solvent evaporation technique

AbstractFor the past few decades, there has been a considerable research interest in the area of biodegradable polymeric micro‐ and nanoparticles for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, implants, stents, medical devices, and drug delivery systems. Poly(D,L‐lactide‐co‐glycolide) (PLGA) is well‐known by its safety in biomedical preparations which has been approved for human use by the FDA. The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of process parameters on size characteristics of PLGA microparticles prepared by oil in oil (o/o) solvent evaporation technique. This method has been introduced as one of the most appropriate methods for hydrophilic agents. Scanning electron microscopy showed that prepared particles were spherical with smooth surface without aggregation. Particle size varied from 570 nm to 29 μm in different experimental conditions. Stirring speed, polymer concentration, impeller type, and dropping size had a significant effect on the particle size. The polydispersity index of particles showed a strong relationship with the surfactant concentration, impeller type, and dropping size. It was concluded that increasing in temperature up to 50°C or changing in dropping rate has a little effect on reducing the size of PLGA particles. The residual solvent content in the final suspension was less than 0.1 ppm that is in appropriate range for biomedical application. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010

Drag-loaded nanoparticle is a new delivery cartier of drug and biomacromoleculc,which have many fortes such as target ability,permeability,controlled release ability and function of promoting cell differentiation.Polypeptide combined nanoparticles can deliver drugs to the targeted tissues by conjugating with specific ligands.Growth factor combined nanoparticles may have better curative effect by maintaining the activity of the growth factors longer.Nanoparticles can effectively deliver genes to the cells in the injured tissue for the enhancemem of the specific function of the cells.Three dimension nanometer fibrous structure combined with nanoparticle based drug delivery could significantly promote the growth of the cell.Magnetic nanoparticles are widely used for the targeted delivery of drugs or genes and separation of biomolecules.Drug loaded nanoparticles have been increasinsly used in tissue enginerring which have shown a tremendous potential.In the present paper,we reviewed the application of drug-loaded nanoparticles in the field of tissue engineering. Application of chitosan and chitosan nanoparticles in tissue engineering

Chitosan has drawn more and more attention for their particular biological effect. Nanometer materials displayed great perspective in medical application. In the present paper, we reviewed the biological characteristic of chitosan, the preparation methods of chitosar nanoparticles, as well as the applications of chitosan and chitosan nanoparticles in tissue engineering.
