Al2O3 Nanoparticles Infiltered in the Fifth-Generation Adhesive to Carious Dentin. A SEM, EDX, μTBS, and FTIR Assessment

Aluminum trioxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) loaded in a fifth-generation adhesive to caries-affected dentin. Molars with occlusal caries were selected. Specimens underwent acid etching and were categorized into 4 groups based on the concentration of Al2O3 NPs in the fifth-generation adhesive. Group 1: 0% Al2O3 NPs, Group 2: 2% Al2O3 NPs, Group 3: 5% Al2O3 NPs and Group 4: 10% Al2O3 NPs. Surface characterization of Al2O3 NPs was assessed via SEM, elemental distribution of particles in Al2O3 was evaluated via EDX, DC was assessed via FTIR, and antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated through the pour plate method. Teeth underwent μTBS testing using the universal testing machine. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to assess the difference in survival rates of S. mutans. The means of different groups were compared using ANOVA and Tukey’s posthoc test to ascertain significant differences. The highest DC was observed in unmodified adhesive. The lowest DC was displayed in group 4. The highest μTBS scores were observed in group 3 samples. The lowest μTBS was observed in group 1 samples. The most effective group against S. mutans was 4. The ER adhesive loaded with 2 wt% and 5 wt% Al2O3 NPs exhibited superior μTBS and antibacterial effectiveness. The addition of Al2O3 to the adhesive resulted in a reduction in the degree of conversion.

Therapeutic Potential of 18-β-Glycyrrhetinic Acid-loaded Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) Nanoparticles on Cigarette Smoke-Induced in-vitro model of COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is strongly linked to cigarette smoke, which contains toxins that induce oxidative stress and airway inflammation, ultimately leading to premature airway epithelial cell senescence and exacerbating COPD progression. Current treatments for COPD are symptomatic and hampered by limited efficacy and severe side effects. This highlights the need to search for an optimal therapeutic candidate to address the root causes of these conditions. This study investigates the possible potential of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-based nanoparticles encapsulating the plant-based bioactive compound 18-β-glycyrrhetinic acid (18βGA) as a strategy to intervene in cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and senescence, in vitro. We prepared 18βGA-PLGA nanoparticles, and assessed their effects on cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, anti-senescence properties (expression of senescence-associated β galactosidase and p21 mRNA), and expression of pro-inflammatory genes (CXCL-1, IL-6, TNF-α) and inflammation-related proteins (IL-8, IL-15, RANTES, MIF). The highest non-toxic concentration of 18βGA-PLGA nanoparticles to healthy human broncho epithelial cell line BCiNS1.1 was identified as 5µM. These nanoparticles effectively mitigated cigarette smoke-induced inflammation, reduced ROS production, protected against cellular aging, and counteracted the effects of CSE on the expression of the inflammation-related genes and proteins. This study underscores the potential of 18βGA encapsulated in PLGA nanoparticles as a promising therapeutic approach to alleviate cigarette smoke-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and senescence. Further research is needed to explore the translational potential of these findings in clinical and in vivo settings.

Plasma synthesis and characteristics of nanocomposite coatings based on PVA and chitosan with incorporated nanoparticles for the healing of skin wounds

This study investigated the impact of new composites based on PVA and chitosan on wound healing in mice. Metal or metal oxide nanoparticles were synthesized without reagents by creating an impulse discharge between metal electrodes in a polymer dispersion. Polymer composites and coatings were then prepared using these nanoparticles. The composites were analyzed using various techniques, including UV spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmittance electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The maximum concentration of nanoparticles in the composite was 3.5%. The average diameter of the nanoparticles was approximately 50-60 nm. The inclusion of Ag and ZnO nanoparticles accelerated the healing process by approximately 25%.

Quercetin has a protective impact on human umbilical vein endothelial cells against tungsten carbide cobalt nanoparticle-induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, apoptosis

Oxidative stress is a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of various cancer diseases. In fact, oxidative DNA damage is described as the type of damage probably to occur in cancer cells. This study examined the protective impact of the polyphenolic compound quercetin on human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVEC) cells against tungsten carbide cobalt nanoparticles (WC-Co NPs)-induced oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis. One of the most often used models for studying endothelial cells in vitro is the human umbilical vein epithelial cell. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to measure the size of the NPs prior to WC-Co NPs treatment. WC-Co NPs had a polygonal form and measured 45.26 ± 1 nm in size. Using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT),neutral red uptake(NRU) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays, the cytotoxicity of WC-Co NPs on HUVECs cells was assessed. The cytotoxicity of NPs increased in a concentration-dependent way. The MTT result was used to calculate the median inhibitory concentration (IC50) for HUVEC cells at 24 h, which came out to be 23.14 μg/ml. Intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS) and lipid peroxidation(LPO) levels were elevated at 17 g/ml WC-Co NPs and then reduced in HUVECs cells upon immediate exposure to 150 µM quercetin (QR). Using JC-1 staining, the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP) in control, WC-Co NPs alone and WC-Co NPs plus QR exposed cell were evaluated. In HUVECs cells, maximum apoptotic cells were seen at increasing NPs concentrations. Based on the impacts of NPs on HUVECs cells, the data suggests that QR may work on the process of scavenging ROS, which is responsible for DNA repair. Consequently, the above findings highlight the significance of these QR as defenses against DNA damage brought on by oxidative stress, which frequently happens in a number of cancer disorders.

Damping and acoustic properties of nanosilica filled poly(styrene-acrylate) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs): Effect of nanocomposite preparation method

Research on noise pollution reduction has focused on utilizing damping coatings and polymer nanocomposites to enhance sound absorption. Nanosilica/poly(styrene-acrylate) nanocomposites as a water-based coating were prepared through in-situ emulsion polymerization and direct mixing methods at varying concentrations of 1, 2, and 3 wt% of nanosilica. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the inclusion of surfactant-containing micelles and a more extended synthesis period in the in-situ synthesis technique enhanced the interaction between silica nanoparticles and polymer chains. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis showed a unimodal distribution and an acceptable range of polydispersity index (PDI) for neat and nanocomposite latexes. The addition of silica nanoparticles enhanced the stability of latex particles, especially evident in the direct mixing method. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the better dispersion of nanoparticles within the polymer matrix in the in-situ method. The addition of nanosilica resulted in a significant increase in pseudoplastic behavior and viscosity, notably in the in-situ synthesis. In both the in-situ synthesis and direct mixing techniques, the addition of 1 wt% of nanosilica resulted in an increase in the damping factor of nanocomposite films to about 2. However, when the nanosilica content was further increased to 3 wt%, the damping factor decreased. Acoustic tests demonstrated improved sound absorption with silica nanoparticles, yielding noise reduction coefficient (NRC) values of 0.49 and 0.46 for in-situ synthesis and direct mixing. The direct mixing method notably enhanced tensile properties at all nanoparticle content levels. Dried nanocomposite films exhibited superior UV-blocking capabilities compared to neat polymer films.

Unlocking the potential of green synthesis: biogenic silver nanoparticles enhance biomass and bioactive chemicals in Ricinus communis Callus

Harnessing the power of nature, this study delves into the remarkable influence of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on biomass production and bioactive chemical synthesis in Ricinus communis callus. Leveraging the eco-friendly properties of Calligonum comosum leaf aqueous extract as both reducing and capping agents, the synthesis of AgNPs was meticulously characterized through an array of analytical techniques, including FTIR, UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDS, confirming the triumphant creation of biogenic AgNPs. Unveiling a landscape of possibilities, the assessment of R. communis biomass and phytochemical substances unraveled intriguing insights. Results unveiled a resounding enhancement in biomass production upon the introduction of biosynthesized AgNPs to the plant media. Noteworthy is the revelation that increasing concentrations of silver NPs acted as catalysts for heightened plant growth and enriched physiological parameters. Moreover, the application of silver nitride elicited a profound amplification in both biomass and antioxidant enzyme activities within plant cells. However, amidst these triumphs, a curious observation emerged: the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) exhibited a notable decline with escalating doses of AgNPs. In essence, this groundbreaking study not only underscores the potential of biosynthesized AgNPs to orchestrate a symphony of growth and biochemical synthesis within R. communis callus but also beckons forth an era of exploration. By charting a course for future research, it beckons scientists to delve deeper into the intricate pathways of phytochemical production and bioactive molecule synthesis under the influence of AgNPs.

Ultrasonic Production of Chitosan Nanoparticles and Their Application Against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Present in the Ataulfo Mango

In Mexico, the Ataulfo mango crop faces significant challenges due to anthracnose, a disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The need to use eco-friendly fungicides is crucial to avoid the use of harmful synthetic chemicals. This study aimed to prepare chitosan nanoparticles through a simple and effective ultrasound-assisted top-down method, with high antifungal efficiency. The nanoparticles were prepared from chitosan (DD = 85%, MW = 553 kDa) and Tween 20 under constant sonication. The formation of the nanoparticles was initially confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy; and their physicochemical properties were subsequently characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The antifungal potential of the chitosan nanoparticles against the phytopathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was evaluated with isolated fungi obtained directly from mango tissues showing anthracnose symptoms in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. The fungus was identified through SEM imaging, showing a regular and smooth conidial layer, with cylindrical shape (r = 2 µm, h = 10 µm). In vitro tests were conducted with three different concentrations of chitosan nanoparticles to assess their inhibitory effects. After seven days of incubation, a maximum inhibition rate of 97% was observed with the 0.5% nanoparticle solution, corresponding to a fungal growth rate of 0.008 cm/h. At this time, the control mycelial growth was 7 cm, while the treated sample reached a radius of 0.55 mm. These results demonstrated the antifungal effect of the nanoparticles on the membrane and cell wall of the fungus, suggesting that their composition could induce a resistance response. The inhibitory effect was also influenced by the particle size (30 nm), as the small size facilitated penetration into fungal cells. Consequently, the parent compound could be formulated and applied as a natural antifungal agent in nanoparticle form to enhance its activity. The method described in this study offers a viable alternative for the preparation of chitosan nanoparticles, by avoiding the use of toxic reagents.

Water chestnut starch nanoparticle Pickering emulsion for enhanced apricot seed oil stability: A sustainable functionality approach.

The usage of starch nanoparticles for Pickering emulsion stabilization has become more popular for various benefits. This work investigated the potential of nano reduced starch as stabilizer in Pickering emulsions. Two different concentrations of starch nanoparticles (2.5 % and 5 %) were used for stabilization of apricot seed oil-in-water Pickering emulsion. Emulsion stabilized by 5 % starch nanoparticles (PE (5 %)) displayed zeta potential of -46.92 mV and emulsions stabilized by 2.5 % starch nanoparticles (PE (2.5 %)) exhibited zeta potential of -15.33 mV. In PE (2.5 %) after 24 h, creaming index (CI) was 12 %. CI remained zero in PE (5 %) after 30 days of storage period.PE (2.5 %) and apricot oil (AO) showed higher peroxide value than PE (5 %). Malondialdehyde (MDA) content of AO was 156.02 mmol/kg oil after 30 day storage period at 45 °C. Comparatively, PE (5 %) possessed lower MDA content (36.02 mmol/kg oil). The findings revealed that starch nanoparticles can be used as stabilizer in Pickering emulsions for stabilization and preventing lipid oxidation in polyunsaturated fatty acid rich oils. This study introduces a sustainable approach to enhance the stability of apricot seed oil using underutilized starch nanoparticles.

Optimization of a rapid, sensitive, and high throughput molecular sensor to measure canola protoplast respiratory metabolism as a means of screening nanomaterial cytotoxicity

Nanomaterial-mediated plant genetic engineering holds promise for developing new crop cultivars but can be hindered by nanomaterial toxicity to protoplasts. We present a fast, high-throughput method for assessing protoplast viability using resazurin, a non-toxic dye converted to highly fluorescent resorufin during respiration. Protoplasts isolated from hypocotyl canola (Brassica napus L.) were evaluated at varying temperatures (4, 10, 20, 30 ˚C) and time intervals (1–24 h). Optimal conditions for detecting protoplast viability were identified as 20,000 cells incubated with 40 µM resazurin at room temperature for 3 h. The assay was applied to evaluate the cytotoxicity of silver nanospheres, silica nanospheres, cholesteryl-butyrate nanoemulsion, and lipid nanoparticles. The cholesteryl-butyrate nanoemulsion and lipid nanoparticles exhibited toxicity across all tested concentrations (5-500 ng/ml), except at 5 ng/ml. Silver nanospheres were toxic across all tested concentrations (5-500 ng/ml) and sizes (20–100 nm), except for the larger size (100 nm) at 5 ng/ml. Silica nanospheres showed no toxicity at 5 ng/ml across all tested sizes (12–230 nm). Our results highlight that nanoparticle size and concentration significantly impact protoplast toxicity. Overall, the results showed that the resazurin assay is a precise, rapid, and scalable tool for screening nanomaterial cytotoxicity, enabling more accurate evaluations before using nanomaterials in genetic engineering.

Synthesis of zinc oxide semiconductor nanoparticles using natural extract: a systematic evaluation of cationic dye photodegradation influenced by extract concentration, catalyst dose, and pH.

This work obtained zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using organic components extracted from Waltheria americana at different concentrations. ZnO materials were subsequently applied in the photodegradation of two cationic dyes, Rhodamine B (RB) and methylene blue (MB), at different doses of catalyst and pH. The crystallinity and hexagonal Wurtzite structure of ZnO were established through XRD analysis. The Zn-O bond in the ZnO NPs was confirmed in the FTIR, with the characteristic signals observed in the fingerprint region at ~ 400cm-1. SEM and TEM revealed the formation of quasi-spherical particles with an average size ranging from 2 to 12nm, depending on extract concentrations during synthesis. UV-Vis studies indicated the optical bandgap of ZnO, with values below 3eV, also dependent on extract concentration. PL analysis revealed the recombination of free excitons and defects in ZnO. Photocatalytic studies of ZnO materials demonstrated excellent degradation efficiency of RB and MB dyes, which was influenced by the extract concentration of NPs, while the degradation of MB was enhanced with a 1:1 dye-to-catalyst ratio under acidic conditions. In contrast, due to RB more complex structure, an increased ratio of 1:1 to 1:3 and acidic pH conditions improved its degradation. Green-synthesized ZnO NPs using photocatalysis techniques exhibit significant potential as eco-friendly alternatives for removing contaminants from water.

A Novel Technique in Determining Mud Cake Permeability in SiO2 Nanoparticles and KCl Salt Water Based Drilling Fluid using Deep Learning Algorithm

The permeability of the mud cake formed at the formation-wellbore interface is an important factor in the designing of water-based drilling fluids. This study presents a novel approach to utilizing experimental thixotropic and rheological parameters of polymeric water-based drilling fluids having varying concentrations of SiO2 nanoparticles and KCl salt. A fully connected feed-forward multi-layered neural network, more commonly known as a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) was developed to predict the mud cake permeability using input parameters such as SiO2 & KCl concentration, differential pressure, temperature, mud cake thickness, API LPLT and HPHT filter loss volume and spurt loss volume. The results suggested that the developed Multilayer Perceptron model effectively determined the mud cake permeability based on the input parameters of the WBDF mentioned above. The model converged on the global minima, minimizing the loss function using the Gradient descent algorithm. A higher Coefficient of Determination (R2) value i.e., 0.8781, and a lesser Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value i.e., 0.04378 indicates the higher accuracy of the model. Pearson’s Coefficient of Correlation obtained via the heatmap indicates that mud cake permeability is strongly influenced by the differential pressure followed by filter loss volume, spurt loss volume, mud cake thickness, and temperature. Previous similar studies have focused on using machine learning algorithms, this study utilized a robust deep learning algorithm i.e., Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network to simultaneously model the combined effects of SiO2 nanoparticles and KCl salt concentrations on mud cake permeability, offering an unprecedented level of accuracy in predicting key WBDF performance parameters

Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) Act as Nanoelicitors in Melissa officinalis to Enhance the Production of Some Important Phenolic Compounds and Essential Oils

ABSTRACTNanoparticles (NPs) are well‐known biostimulants in plant biotechnology, utilised to enhance the physical properties of plants and exhibit positive effects on them. The important key role is the most suitable type, effective dose and size of NP to be used in plant tissue culture systems. In this study, various concentrations of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs; 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 μg L−1) were tested as elicitors in callus culture with the aim of enhancing secondary metabolite production in lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.). According to the results obtained, callus formation rates have shown an increase in all applications compared to the control group. The highest callus formation, weight and diameter were observed in 50 μg L−1 application. In this application, the callus structure was compact and its colour was green. However, the aromatic compounds, neral and geranial increased significantly in 25 μg L−1 application. The maximum increase in phenolic compounds such as caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, proto‐catechic acid, hesperidin and p‐coumaric acid was observed in the 75 μg L−1 AgNP and the highest increase in rosmarinic acid compound was determined in the 50 μg L−1 application. The study found that AgNP applications are an effective method for increasing the production of secondary metabolites in medicinal and aromatic plants, such as lemon balm, in vitro.

Unsteady Free Convection of Nanofluid Past an Infinite Vertical Sheet Under the Effects of Inclined Magnetic Field and Cogley Radiation

Background: An infinite vertical sheet is the medium of inquiry for studying the copper- water nanofluid behavior with an inclined magnetic field and Cogley radiation. The research contains significant aspects. The use of this nanofluid is of great practical importance, especially in the areas of energy efficiency, thermal management, radiative cooling for space technology, environmental impact reduction, and improving heat transfer efficiency in electronic device cooling operations. Moreover, the research enhances the understanding and manipulation of sophisticated materials. The uttermost significance of this resides in its capacity to uncover issues inherent in the stages of planning, developing, analyzing, and improving manufacturing processes, possibly securing new solutions via patent protection. Objective: This research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the unsteady natural convection of a nanofluid along an infinite vertical sheet. The study focuses on understanding how an inclined magnetic field, Cogley radiation, heat source, and varying nanoparticle volume concentrations impact the velocity, thermal, and concentration profiles of the nanofluid. Additionally, the investigation seeks to evaluate the Nusselt number, Sherwood number, and skin friction coefficient across different concentration profiles to derive meaningful insights. Methods: The Laplace transform (L.T.) method, in combination with the MATLAB symbolic computing program, is used to develop numerical solutions for the main boundary value issues. The Laplace transform technique is used to clarify dimensionless partial differential equations (PDEs) and their limiting situations. An in-depth study is conducted on the profiles of momentum, energy, and concentration for various kinds of nanofluids with changing volume concentrations of nanoparticles. This research provides a comprehensive examination and also identifies prospective prospects in this field that might be protected by patents. Result: The work provides an in-depth understanding of how inclined magnetic fields, Cogley radiation, heat generation, and nanoparticle volume concentration affect the velocity, energy, and mass profiles of the nanofluid. Graphical representations depict these effects, offering a visual comprehension of the system's behavior. The Nusselt number and skin friction coefficient are determined by analytical and numerical methods. These findings demonstrate that the Nusselt number and skin friction coefficient have an inverse relationship with changes in concentration profiles. Conclusion: The work improves our comprehension of the fluctuating natural convection of nanofluids across an unbounded vertical surface, taking into account variables such as an inclined magnetic field, heat source, Cogley radiation, and nanoparticle volume concentration. The practical implications of the discoveries, together with the analytical and numerical results, enhance our comprehension of the dynamics of nanofluid systems. Ensuring the protection and widespread distribution of patented technology is essential for promoting sustainable advancements.

Induced magnetic field and thermal regulation of synovial fluid flow through irregular surfaces with first-order slip and gold nanoparticles

ABSTRACT The current computational exploration develops a poroelastic model of the knee cartilage to elevate its temperature under cyclic sinusoidal loading. A contributing factor to the rise in temperature is this tissue’s viscous dissipation, which converts some of the mechanical energy supplied into heat. The manipulation of cartilage temperature is mostly reliant on the movement of synovial fluid inside the space between joints and within the permeable cartilage. We developed the region flow model in the presence of induced magnetic fields and gold nanoparticles, which enhanced the efficiency of joint lubrication by boosting the load-carrying capacity. We dealt with the problem for two different models. Model 1 assumes that viscosity is exponentially dependent on concentration. The shear thinning index in Model 2 is regarded as a concentration-dependent variable. We introduce these models for a complex wavy surface, where the first-order slip effect occurs. We modified the governing problem by assuming a long wavelength and a low Reynolds number. We followed up with a computational analysis utilizing the Rung–Kutta–Merson approach with Newton iteration in a shooting and matching strategy. We have conducted detailed comparisons between Model 1 and Model 2. The graphical findings have been shown for the distributions of velocity, temperature, and nanoparticle concentration. Additionally, the pressure gradients, streamlines, and axially generated magnetic fields have also been included. These results are presented for numerous physical parameters. The mechanics of trapping are thoroughly examined through the use of streamlines.

The Physiological Effect Of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) Nanopesticide On Aedes aegypti Larvae

Aedes aegypti is responsible for transmitting various mosquito-borne diseases. Recently, there have been concerns about the negative impacts of the insecticides used in vector control including insecticide resistance development in the mosquito population. These circumstances lead to efforts to develop other strategies for controlling mosquito vectors. As technology in nanoparticles advances, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles have the potential as the alternative for chemical pesticides for mosquito larvicides due to their optical properties and widespread usage in different industries. The purpose of this study was to determine the toxicity of ZnO nanoparticles towards Ae. aegypti larvae and to examine the physiologies of Ae. aegypti mosquito larvae treated with ZnO nanoparticles at LC50 level. Toxicity bioassays were carried out to determine LC50 and LC90 values. The larvae surface and midgut treated with LC50 ZnO were examined using the Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The LC50 and LC90 concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles after 4 hr of direct UV exposure against Ae. aegypti larvae were 49.141 mg/L and 64.195 mg/L, respectively. After exposure to ZnO nanoparticles, Ae. aegypti larvae showed morphological abnormalities, including distorted and shrunk body parts as well as midgut rupture. Overall, the findings suggest that ZnO nanoparticles have the potential to replace chemical pesticides as a means of reducing the populations of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes.

Study the Antifungal Effects of Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles on the Aspergillus niger, Microsporum canis, and Candida albicans

: The increasing prevalence of drug-resistant fungal pathogens and the limitations of current antifungal therapies underscore the need for novel alternative treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal effects of green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on three clinically significant fungi: Aspergillus niger, Microsporum canis, and Candida albicans. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using plant-based extracts to ensure eco-friendly production methods. The synthesized Ag NPs were characterized using UV spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Characterization assays revealed spherical particles with colloidal stability, an average size of approximately 80 nm, a Polydispersity Index of 0.4, and a surface charge of 62.3 mV. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values demonstrated effective suppression of fungal growth at low nanoparticle concentrations. In conclusion, our study highlights the potential of green-synthesized Ag NPs as a promising alternative to conventional antifungal agents, emphasizing their significant advantages in biocompatibility and eco-friendliness. These findings could pave the way for a new era in treating fungal infections, particularly those caused by drug-resistant strains.

Morphophysiological, biochemical, and nutrient response of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) by foliar CeO2 nanoparticles under elevated CO2

Nanomaterials offer considerable benefits in improving plant growth and nutritional status owing to their inherent stability, and efficiency in essential nutrient absorption and delivery. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) at optimum concentration could significantly influence plant morpho-physiology and nutritional status. However, it remains unclear how elevated CO2 and CeO2 NPs interactively affect plant growth and quality. Accordingly, the ultimate goal was to reveal whether CeO2 NPs could alter the impact of elevated CO2 on the nutrient composition of spinach. For this purpose, spinach plant morpho-physiological, biochemical traits, and nutritional contents were evaluated. Spinach was exposed to different foliar concentrations of CeO2 NPs (0, 25, 50, 100 mg/L) in open-top chambers (400 and 600 CO2 μmol/mol). Results showed that elevated CO2 enhanced spinach growth by increasing photosynthetic pigments, as evidenced by a higher photosynthetic rate (Pn). However, the maximum growth and photosynthetic pigments were observed at the highest concentration of CeO2 NPs (100 mg/L) under elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 resulted in a decreased stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (Tr), whereas CeO2 NPs enhanced these parameters. No significant changes were observed in any of the measured biochemical parameters due to increased levels of CO2. However, an increase in antioxidant enzymes, particularly in catalase (CAT; 14.37%) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX; 10.66%) activities, was observed in high CeO2 NPs (100 mg/L) treatment under elevated CO2 levels. Regarding plant nutrient content, elevated CO2 significantly decreases spinach roots and leaves macro and micronutrients as compared to ambient CO2 levels. CeO2 NPs, in a dose-dependent manner, with the highest increase observed in 100 mg/L CeO2 NPs treatment and increased roots and shoots magnesium (211.62–215.49%), iron (256.68–322.77%), zinc (225.89–181.49%), copper (21.99–138.09%), potassium (121.46–138.89%), calcium (118.22–91.32%), manganese (133.15–195.02%) under elevated CO2. Overall, CeO2 NPs improved spinach growth and biomass and reverted the adverse effects of elevated CO2 on its nutritional quality. These findings indicated that CeO2 NPs could be used as an effective approach to increase vegetable growth and nutritional values to ensure food security under future climatic conditions.

AbstractThe mathematical modeling of blood flow with the incorporation of ternary hybrid nanoparticles (i.e., titania, silica, and alumina nanoparticles) is the focus of this work. The flow of blood is simulated using the Casson fluid model. The impacts of ternary hybrid nanoparticles, shape factor, and Geometry of solid nanoparticles are visualized and investigated. The momentum and thermal characteristics of a flowing liquid are determined by considering magnetization, porosity, and nonlinearized radiating thermal flux. The basic partial differential equations resulting from mathematical modeling are turned into non‐linear ordinary differential equations using suitable velocity transforms. The derived nonlinear equations are then numerically calculated using the 4th‐5th order Runge‐Kutta‐Fehlberg method with the shooting technique and analytically solved by the Adomian decomposition method (ADM). The effects of the factors involved on the dimensionless profiles produced are fully addressed. It is found that the Skin friction factor and heat transfer rate in the radial direction upsurge with the augment of both rotation parameter and nanoparticles volume fraction; however, the Skin friction factor drops in the azimuthal direction. Also, results obtained reveal an enhancement in the local Nusselt number with the upsurge in the magnitude of radiation parameter, Rd, solid nanoparticles concentration, , shape factor value, s, and disk temperature, . For validation, the outcomes of this inquiry were compared to the outcomes of the HAM‐based Mathematica software. In addition, the acquired analytical DRA data are compared to numerical RKF45 values and those given in the literature.

Oxidative stress, histopathological and genotoxicity of copper oxide nanoparticles in Biomphalaria alexandrina snail

AbstractHigher usage of copper oxide nanomaterials in industrial and biomedical fields may cause an increase of these nanoparticles in aquatic environments, which could have a detrimental ecological effect. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of copper oxide nanoparticles on the freshwater gastropod, Biomphalaria alexandrina. Transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis and UV–VIS spectrophotometer of CuO NPs revealed a typical TEM image and a single crystal structure with average crystallite size of approximately 40 nm also, a sharp absorption band was appeared. Following exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of CuO NPs (LC10, 15.6 mg/l and LC25, 27.2 mg/l), treated snails revealed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in total antioxidant capacity, reduced glutathione contents as well as catalase, and sodium dismutase activities were significantly declined (p < 0.05) in comparison to the control group. Also, histopathological alterations were observed in the digestive gland, including ruptured and vacuolated digestive cells, and a marked increase in the number of secretory cells and the severity of the damage increased with rising concentrations. Furthermore, changes in RAPD profiles were detected in the treated snails. In conclusion, our research highlights the potential ecological impact of CuO NPs release in aquatic ecosystems and advocates for improved monitoring and regulation of CuO NPs industrial usage and disposal.

Silk fibroin microspheres with photothermal nanocarrier encapsulation for anticancer drug delivery

Controlled drug release systems are pivotal in optimizing therapeutic outcomes and mitigating side effects in treatment protocols. While traditional delivery vectors such as liposomes, micro/nanoparticles, and microspheres are effective, they often struggle with consistency in drug release rates. This study addresses these issues by integrating stimuli-responsive elements specifically magnetic, thermal, and pH-responsive components into drug delivery systems for precise control. Central to our approach is the use of silk fibroin (SF), chosen for its superior biocompatibility and tunable degradation kinetics. We developed uniform carrier microspheres (CMs) by embedding polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) into SF microspheres using a custom-designed microfluidic platform. The development process and the application of this platform are detailed, highlighting the precision in control achievable. These CMs showcased enhanced photothermal effects, with the thermal response finely adjustable by altering the PDA NPs concentration, achieving a notable temperature increase of 24.5°C at 7.4 wt% concentration. High drug loading capacity (7.5%) and encapsulation efficiency (91.6%) were achieved, along with a pH-responsive release profile under near-infrared irradiation, paving the way for targeted anticancer drug delivery systems using the model drug doxorubicin hydrochloride. These findings underscore the potential of the developed CMs for external topical application, offering promising prospects for targeted cancer therapy utilizing drug-loaded microspheres.
