"The protective effect of nano curcumin supplementation on doxorubicin induced cardiotoxicity in breast cancer patients; a randomized, double-blind clinical trial".

Anthracycline drugs play a fundamental role in breast cancer treatment; however, the cardiotoxicity side effects obscure the advantages of treatment. Curcumin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we investigated the effect of nanocurcumin supplementation on Doxorubicin induced Cardiotoxicity. In this randomized clinical trial, a week before starting the doxorubicin regimen for breast cancer patients, the control group received placebo and curcumin group received 80 mg daily dosage of nano curcumin capsules for six months. Echocardiography parameter changes before chemotherapy and after six months were evaluated. 46 patients were included. Left ventricle (LV) ejection fraction significantly decreased and LV end diastolic volume significantly increased in control group but no significant changes were observed in the curcumin group (LVEF: 2.62 ± 59.35 to 4.23 ± 56.85, p-value: 0.014 vs 59.55 ± 1.91 to 58.46 ± 3.41, p-value:0.135; LVEDV: 77.09 ± 15.33 to 80.65 ± 14.54, p-value:0.023 vs 72.41 ± 15.34 74.00 ± 14.25, p-value: 0.294). Additionally, LVEF, LV end systolic diameter (LVESD), and end diastolic diameter (LVEDD) insignificantly more decreased in control group versus curcumin group (LVEF: 4.13 ± 2.50- vs 3.36 ± 1.08-, p-value: 0.223; LVESD: 0.27 ± 0.06-vs 0.120.45 ±, p-value:0.110; LVEDD: -0.44 ± 0.33 vs 0.070.33 ±, p-value:0.269). Furthermore, symptomatic cardiomyopathy and ejection fraction ratio less than 53% were not observed. The LVEF reduction >15% was observed was also high in the control group, (p-value = 0.020). This study shows the possible effect of nanocurcumin capsules to reduce the cardiotoxicity of anthracycline chemotherapy medications.

Effect of nano-curcumin supplementation on cardiometabolic risk factors, physical and psychological quality of life, and depression in patients with coronary slow flow phenomenon: a randomized double-blind clinical trial

BackgroundExtensive evidence has suggested the cardio-protective properties of the polyphenol curcumin. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a highly bioavailable curcumin supplement on cardiometabolic risk factors, health-related quality of life, and depression in patients with coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP).MethodsThis randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted in 42 patients with CSFP (age 35–70 years, 25 ≤ body mass index < 40 kg/m2). Patients received either 80 mg/day nano-curcumin or placebo for 12 weeks. Serum levels of visfatin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and glycemic indices were measured before and after the intervention. The short form 36-item quality of life (SF-36) and Beck’s Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) questionnaires were assessed, as well.ResultsNo significant improvements were observed in circulating hs-CRP and visfatin following the intervention. A significant increase was observed in pre- to post-fasting blood glucose (− 0.9 ± 12.2 vs. 7.7 ± 12.4 mg/dl, p = 0.02) and hemoglobin A1C (− 0.1 ± 0.8 vs. 0.5 ± 0.8%, p = 0.04) levels, in the placebo compared with the intervention group. Physical (8.2 ± 8.1 vs. − 1.2 ± 6.5, p < 0.001) and mental (6.8 ± 11.8 vs. − 1.1 ± 10.4, p = 0.02) component summary scores were significantly improved in the nano-curcumin than the placebo group. Additionally, the number of patients with lower degrees of depression was significantly better in the intervention than the placebo group following the supplementation (p = 0.046).ConclusionCurcumin supplementation prevented deterioration of glycemic control and improved physical and psychological quality of life and depression in patients with CSFP.Trial registrationIranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT20131125015536N8), June 19, 2019.

Effect of nano-curcumin supplementation on angina status, and traditional and novel cardiovascular risk factors in overweight or obese patients with coronary slow flow phenomenon: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial

BackgroundCardiovascular events and poor quality of life are frequently observed in patients with coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP). This trial evaluated the effect of nano-curcumin supplement containing curcuminoids, as multifunctional nutraceuticals, on angina status, and some traditional and novel cardiovascular risk factors in overweight or obese patients with CSFP.MethodsIn this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 42 overweight or obese patients with CSFP received either 80 mg/day of nano-curcumin or placebo for 12 weeks. Seattle angina questionnaire (SAQ) as a clinical measure of angina status, circulating endocan, adropin, homocysteine, lipid profile, and the novel scores of visceral adiposity index (VAI) and waist-triglyceride index (WTI) were assessed before and after the intervention. The independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney test, analysis of covariance, Chi-square, and Fisher’s exact tests were used where appropriate.ResultsAll domains of SAQ including physical limitation, angina stability, angina frequency-severity, treatment satisfaction, and disease perception and quality of life improved significantly in the nano-curcumin compared with the placebo group. No significant changes were observed in serum endocan, adropin, and homocysteine following the intervention. Triglycerides, triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, WTI and VAI values improved significantly only within the nano-curcumin group.ConclusionsSupplementation with 80 mg/day nano-curcumin (containing curcuminoids) for 12 weeks significantly improved clinically important disease-specific aspects of health in patients with CSFP. Some traditional and novel cardiovascular risk factors improved significantly only compared with the baseline values, which need further investigation.Trial registrationThis study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (IR.TUMS.VCR.REC.1398.794). Efficacy of Nano-curcumin Supplementation on Depression, Anxiety, Stress and Clinical Symptoms in Migraine Patients: A Randomized Double-blind Clinical Trial

Background:: Migraine is a debilitating neuroinflammatory disorder. Patients with migraine often experience elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, which are associated with the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. Curcumin has been shown to have regulatory effects on depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as analgesic properties through various mechanisms. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of nanocurcumin supplementation on depression, anxiety, stress, and clinical manifestations in patients with migraine. Methodology:: This study was conducted as a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. A total of forty-four patients with episodic migraines were recruited for the trial. Stratified randomization was employed to ensure a balanced distribution of participants based on BMI and sex. The patients were equally assigned to two groups using permuted block randomization: 1) the intervention group, which received 80 mg of nano-curcumin, and 2) the placebo (control) group, which received a paraffin-based placebo. The intervention and control periods lasted for 2 months. Anthropometric and demographic data, clinical signs and symptoms (including headache frequency, duration, and severity as reported by the patients), as well as stress, anxiety, and depression scores (using the Dass-21 questionnaire), were recorded before and after the study. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 22. For normally distributed data, paired t-tests and independent t-tests were utilized. Non-normal data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney U test. The chi-squared test was employed for categorical variables. To account for confounding factors, the ANCOVA test was conducted. A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The intention-to-treat method was applied to address outliers and missing data. Results:: Based on the findings, the current study demonstrates that supplementation with nano-curcumin can effectively mitigate symptoms of depression and anxiety (p &lt; 0.05). Regarding stress, a noticeable reduction within the nano-curcumin group was observed, although it did not reach statistical significance when compared between groups (p &gt; 0.05). Moreover, nano-curcumin exhibited a significant decrease in the frequency, duration, and severity of headaches (p &lt; 0.05). Conclusion:: Our research findings have shown that supplementation with nano-curcumin can effectively decrease the frequency, severity, and duration of headaches while also alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety in comparison to the placebo group. Hence, curcumin exhibits significant potential as an adjuvant therapy to enhance the treatment of migraines.

The Effect of Aerobic Training and Nanomicelle Curcumin Supplementation on MDA and BAX And BCL2 Activity Levels on Cardiotoxicity of Mice Infected with Breast Cancer in the Phase of Mani with Doxorubicin

Background: Doxorubicin is a universal drug in the treatment of all types of cancers, which is limited due to its many side effects. Therefore, the present study has investigated the effect of aerobic exercise and the use of curcumin nano micelles on the activity levels of BAX, BCL2, and MDA concentration in doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in mice with breast cancer.&#x0D; Methods: In this research, which was of a fundamental type and controlled experimentally, 24BalbC female rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: doxorubicin, doxorubicin patient and exercise, doxorubicin patient and nano curcumin supplement and doxorubicin patient, exercise and supplement. Breast cancer induction was done with MC4-L2 cells. Doxorubicin 2mg/kg was injected subcutaneously 6 times on day 28, 21, 14, 7, 1 and 35. The aerobic program consisted of 5 sessions per week for 42 days with an increase in the speed of the treadmill every two weeks including 14, 16, and 18 meters per minute and the use of nano curcumin at a dose of 100mg/k. The collected data were analyzed with a two-way analysis of variance with a significance level of 0.05 in the tests.&#x0D; Results: 6 weeks of aerobic training had no effect on BCL2 activity and MDA concentration, but it significantly decreased BAX activity. Taking nano curcumin supplement for 6 weeks decreased BAX activity and MDA concentration and significantly increased BCL2 activity. Conclusion 6 A week of aerobic training along with nano curcumin supplementation did not affect BAX activity and MDA concentration, but it caused an increase in BCL2 activity (p value &lt; 0.05).&#x0D; Conclusion: Aerobic exercise and the use of curcumin nano micelle supplement separately or at the same time can be effective in reducing the cardiac toxicity of doxorubicin in patients with breast cancer.

Influence of 8 Weeks of Tabata High-Intensity Interval Training and Nanocurcumin Supplementation on Inflammation and Cardiorespiratory Health among Overweight Elderly Women.

Nanocurcumin (NaC) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) play crucial role in weight and inflammation control. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the separate and combined effects of 8 weeks of Tabata-HIIT and NaC supplementation on the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, long non-coding RNA myocardial infarction associated transcript (lncRNA MIAT) expression, body composition, and cardiorespiratory health in elderly overweight women. A total of 48 healthy overweight elderly women were randomly divided into four groups: NaC, Tabata-HIIT+Pla, Tabata-HIIT+NaC, and placebo. Participants underwent a Tabata HIIT program (2 days per week, at 80∼0% of maximal HR) and NaC supplementation (daily 80 mg in two 40 mg capsules) for 8 weeks. Blood sampling, cardiorespiratory hemodynamic responses, and body composition evaluations were obtained before and after treadmill stress testing at the baseline timepoint and following 8 weeks of intervention. The mRNA of lncRNA-MIAT and NLRP3 were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction. After 8 weeks, a significant improvement was observed in body composition and cardiorespiratory hemodynamics in the Tabata-HIIT groups compared to the NaC alone and placebo groups (P<0.05). Tabata training, both with and without the addition of nano curcumin supplementation, did not result significant effect on the resting levels of lncRNA-MIAT expression (P>0.05). Nevertheless, NaC supplementation along with Tabata training led to a significant reduction in NLRP3 inflammasome. In addition, NaC supplementation in overweight/preobese women improved systemic inflammation during treadmill stress testing. These findings indicating the suppressive effects of non-pharmacologic interventions on the sympathetic system and downregulation of the inflammasome.

Curcumin, the primary curcuminoid component of turmeric (Curcuma longa L), has been shown to have powerful antibacterial properties, inhibiting the growth of a wide range of infections. The research presented here focuses on current Curcumin nanosystems investigations to aid in the progress of curcumin and its derivatives as comprehensive antiviral therapies. The breakdown rates of curcumin were determined using spectrophotometry, which allowed the compound's stability to be determined using chitosan and Tergitol-15-S-7. Tergentole 5 was also utilised as a surfactant. Hydrophobic contacts, hydrogen bond formation, and electrostatic interactions are examples of exothermic interactions between curcumin and chitosan. Tergitol-15-S-7 impacts the interaction between curcumin and chitosan in large doses, according to an examination of absorption and fluorescence patterns at a physiological pH (7.4). The apparent binding constants and distribution of curcumin within the interior of chitosan have been demonstrated using the fluorescence quenching method. Nano-curcumin supplementation in patients with mild and moderate acute pancreatitis: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

We aimed to investigate whether nano-curcumin as an anti-inflammatory agent is effective in patients with mild and moderate AP. This study was a double-blind, parallel-arm randomized controlled trial conducted at Taleghani hospital, Tehran, Iran. Eligible subjects with a diagnosis of mild and moderate AP were randomly assigned to receive either two doses of nano-curcumin (40 mg) or placebo (control) daily for 2 weeks. The primary endpoint was gastrointestinal (GI) ward length of stay (LOS). A total of 42 patients were randomly assigned to receive either nano-curcumin (n = 21) or placebo (n = 21). Compared with placebo, nano-curcumin supplementation decreased hospital LOS (RR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.502-0.894; p = 0.006), reduced the need for analgesics over time (OR = 0.576, 95% CI: 0.421-0.790; p = 0.001), and increased overall appetite score over the study period (β = 0.104, SE: 0.053; p = 0.049). No adverse effects or mortality were reported and there was no withdrawal during the study period. The results indicate that nano-curcumin as an adjuvant therapy is safe and may reduce GI ward LOS, analgesics requirement, and improve the overall appetite in patients with mild and moderate AP. Future multi-center trials with larger sample sizes are required to verify these findings. Clinical trial registration: www.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04989166.

The effectiveness of moderate intensity continuous exercises and nano-curcumin supplementation on sensory-motor disorders in Rats with brain tumors

Background and Objectives:Any abnormal growth of cells in the brain in an uncontrolled manner leads to the formation of tumor cell masses and disruption of the normal functional functions of the brain, including sensory-motor problems. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the The effectiveness of moderate-intensity continuous exercise and nanocurcumin supplementation on sensorimotor disorders in mice with brain tumors. Subjects and Methods: 35 healthy male Wistar rats randomly divided into 7 groups of 5, basal control (BC), 4-week control (4wC), basal cancer control(BT), 4-week cancer control(4wT), cancer-training (TE), cancer - Nanocurcumin (TN), Cancer-Exercise-Nanocurcumin (TEN) were divided. One week after the injection of cancer cells in the frontal cortex, the animals entered the main exercise program on the tape by performing the 6-parameter behavioral test (18 points) of Garcia and gavage of nano curcumin supplement at the rate of 80 mg/kg (28 days, 5 days a week). (4 weeks, at a speed of 18 meters per minute, 25-40 minutes and 3 days a week). At the end, rats were victim and data were collected and analyzed. Result: Continuous exercises with moderate intensity Simultaneously with nano-curcumin supplementation significantly reduced tumor volume in the TEN group (p≤0.05). It also led to a significant increase in behavioral testing in the study groups compared to the 4 wT group. Conclusion: It seems that the combination of continuous exercises with nano curcumin can be used as a therapeutic supplement along with other methods to reduce brain tumor size and improve sensory-motor functions.

Effect of 6 weeks of aerobic training with nanocurcumin consumption on IL1β, nitric oxide, and depression in women with metabolic syndrome

Backgrounds and ObjectivesThe use of anti-inflammatory supplements is important in improving the executive function of obese people. This research aims to investigate the effect of 6 weeks of aerobic exercise with moderate intensity as well as the consumption of nanocurcumin on IL1β, nitric oxide (NO), and depression in women aged 60–65 with metabolic syndrome.Materials and MethodsFourty-four women with metabolic syndrome were randomly selected and divided into four groups of 10 based on their use of nanocurcumin supplement. The treatment included the training (T), nanocurcumin (N), training + nanocurcumin (TN), and the control groups. The groups exposed to training performed aerobic exercise for 6 weeks (three sessions per week). Blood samples were obtained before and after the training period for antioxidant indicators and lipid degradation measurement. Also, the Beck anxiety questionnaire was used for evaluating levels of anxiety. T-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were used for the assessment of within-group and between-group differences, respectively.ResultsThere was a significant difference in IL1β, NO, and depression before and after exercise in all three experimental groups (p ≤ 0.05). Also, the results showed a significant difference in the level of NO and depression in the experimental groups. The highest decrease in these variables was observed in the T and TN groups (p ≤ 0.05).ConclusionThese findings indicated that 6-week nanocurcumin supplementation with aerobic training is a suitable method for reducing IL1β, NO, and depression, preventing metabolic, cardiovascular, and inflammatory diseases in women with metabolic syndrome.Name of the registry: IR.SEMUMS.REC.1396.107Trial registration number: IRCT2017082335857N1

The effect of aerobic training and curcumin supplementation on the expression of IGF-1 gene in muscle rat

Background: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of four weeks of moderate aerobic training and nanocurcumin supplementation on IGF-1 gene expression and its receptor in the soleus muscle of rats. Materials and Methods: 32 male Wistar rats, approximately eight weeks old, with a weight range of 200±10 grams, were prepared and kept for one week under standard conditions of light, temperature, and humidity. Rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of 8 series: healthy control group, aerobic training group, nanocurcumin group and aerobic training + nanocurcumin group. The training protocol was for 4 weeks, 5 days a week, in the first week, 20 minutes of activity with a speed of 18 meters per minute, and finally in the 4th week, it reached 35 minutes of activity with a speed of 20 meters per minute. Nanocurcumin supplement was also used for each animal at 80 mg / kilogram of body weight. One-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni's post hoc test was used at the significance level (P<0.05). Results: The results showed an increase in IGF-1 and IGF-1R gene expression levels in the soleus muscle in all groups compared to the control group. Conclusion: The combination of training and nanocurcumin supplementation probably increases the antioxidant capacity of the body and causes a greater increase in the expression of the IGF-1 gene and IGF-1R in skeletal muscles, which indicates more anabolic effects.

The Effect of Moderate-intensity Continuous Exercise and Nanocurcumine Supplementation on STAT3 Gene Expression in Rats With Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Tumor

Background and Objectives Continuous exercise with moderate intensity and the use of nanocurcumin supplementation has the potential to control and reduce tumors of the central nervous system, including glioblastoma. We assessed the simultaneous effect of moderate-intensity continuous exercises and nanocurcumin supplementation on STAT3 gene expression in mice with glioblastoma multiforme brain tumors. Subjects and Methods Thirty-five male Wistar rats were randomly divided into seven groups of five rats: basal control (BC), 4-week control (4wC), basal cancer control (BT), 4-week cancer control (4 wT), cancer+training (TE), cancer+nanocurcumin (TN), cancer+ exercise + nanocurcumin (TEN). After injection of cancer cells in the forehead, the animals were treated with nanocurcumin by gavage at the dose of 80 mg/kg for 28 days, five days a week, and started moderate-intensity continuous training on the treadmill for four weeks, three days/weeks, 25 to 40 minutes per week at a speed of 18 m/min. Finally, and then rats were sacrificed and data were collected. Results Moderate-intensity continuous training with nanocurcumin supplementation significantly reduced tumor volume and STAT3 gene expression in the TEN group (P&lt;0.05). But this decrease was not significant in the TE and TN groups. Conclusion It seems that with decreased STAT3 gene expression and brain tumor size, the combination of moderate-intensity continuous training and nanocurcumin supplementation has a therapeutic role in the treatment process of glioblastoma multiforme brain tumors.

The Effect of Nanocurcumin Supplementation on Protein C, Partial Thromboplastin Time, Transforming Growth Factor-β1, and Simplified Acute Physiology Score II in Patients With Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a general inflammation that involves many patients’ organs in intensive care units and significantly affects the risk of morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate the effect of nanocurcumin on protein C, partial thromboplastin time (PTT), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and simplified acute physiology score II (SAPS II) in patients with SIRS. In this randomized, clinical trial, 40 SIRS-positive patients were randomly assigned to the intervention group who received 160 mg/day of nanocurcumin and the control group that received routine treatment for 10 days. Before, the 5th and 10th days of the study, the SAPS II questionnaire was completed, and protein C, PTT, and TGF-β1 levels were measured. At the end of the study, the PTT levels in the intervention and control groups increased and decreased, respectively. However, the significant increase of protein C levels was shown only in the intervention group. SAPS II scores were also decreased significantly only in the intervention group. There was no significant difference in serum levels of TGF-β1 in both groups. According to the results of this study, supplementation with nanocurcumin can decrease the SAPS II and improve the coagulation status in patients with SIRS.

The effect of dietary nanocurcumin on the growth performance, body composition, haemato‐biochemical parameters and histopathological scores of the Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) challenged with Aspergillus flavus

The study aims to investigate the potential effect of nanocurcumin as feed additive in the diet of Oreochromis niloticus to improve its growth performance, health status and resistance against Aspergillus flavus. The control group was fed on a basal diet without nanocurcumin, and four diets T1, T2, T3 and T4 were supplemented with 10, 25, 40 and 55 mg/kg of nanocurcumin, respectively, in triplicate (20 fish/replicate). The duration of the feeding trial was 60 days. The final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate and survival rate showed significantly (p < 0.05) increased values in the nanocurcumin groups than the control. Fish fed with nanocurcumin supplementation showed improvement in RBCs, haemoglobin, total protein, albumin and globulin while there was a decrease in the liver enzymes (AST and ALT), glucose and alkaline phosphatase. The creatinine was also decreased in fish fed nanocurcumin. The digestive enzymes amylase and lipase increased in the nanocurcumin-treated groups, and the triglycerides values showed non-significant increase, whereas the cholesterol values showed non-significant decrease in T1 and T4. Meanwhile, the cortisol was nearly the same in all groups. At the end of the trial, the fish were challenged with Aspergillus flavus for 15 days. Aspergillus flavus resulted in the mortality of 100% of the control group and the groups with lower doses of nanocurcumin (T1 and T2) within the first week and second week post challenge respectively. In the treatments with high doses (T3 and T4), higher survival rates were recorded in a dose-dependent manner. The pathogenicity of Aspergillus flavus was confirmed histopathologically. It was concluded that the dietary supplementation of nanocurcumin enhanced the health status of O. niloticus by improving the haemato-immunological response and body composition parameters of the fish, and protected it from the Aspergillus flavus infection with optimum inclusion levels of 25–40 mg/kg diet.

Effects of Dietary Nano-Curcumin Supplementation on Growth Performance, Glucose Metabolism, and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Juvenile Largemouth Bass, Micropterus salmoides

This study evaluated the effects of nano-curcumin on growth performance, mucosal immunity, antioxidant response, glucose metabolism, and endoplasmic reticulum stress in largemouth bass. Three groups (three replicates/group) of 270 fish with the mean body weight of 7.00 ± 0.02 g were fed with diets containing 0% (control), 0.1%, and 0.2% nano-curcumin for 60 days. The results showed that dietary supplementation of nano-curcumin had no significant effects on the growth performance, body composition, lysozyme (LYZ), and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in skin mucus, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activity in serum of largemouth bass. However, dietary supplementation with 0.2% nano-curcumin significantly increased peroxidase (POD) activity in skin mucus and decreased the serum MDA activity compared with the control group. Moreover, dietary supplementation of 0.2% nano-curcumin significantly decreased the levels of serum glucose and liver glycogen, which may be mainly related to the increased gene expression of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), glucokinase (GK), phosphofructokinase (PFK), and pyruvate kinase (PK). At the same time, the hepatic gene expression of glucose-regulated protein78 (GRP78), activating transcription factor6 (ATF6), inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE), and eukaryotic initiation factor 2α (eIF2α) in the 0.2% nano-curcumin group were rapidly suppressed, indicating that adding 0.2% nano-curcumin to the diet can alleviate endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in fish. In conclusion, diets supplemented with 0.2% nano-curcumin effectively improved mucosal immunity, antioxidant properties, and glucose metabolism and alleviated ERS induced by long-term carbohydrate intake in largemouth bass.

Does nano-curcumin supplementation improve hematological indices in critically ill patients with sepsis? A randomized controlled clinical trial.

Sepsis is the final common pathway to death for severe infectious diseases worldwide. The present trial aimed to investigate the effects of nano-curcumin supplementation on hematological indices in critically ill patients with sepsis. Fourteen ICU-admitted patients were randomly allocated into either nano-curcumin or placebo group for 10days. The blood indices, serum levels of inflammatory biomarker and presepsin as well as nutrition status, and clinical outcomes were assessed before the intervention and on days 5 and 10. White blood cells, neutrophils, platelets, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and the levels of interleukin-8 significantly decreased in the nano-curcumin group compared to the placebo after 10days of intervention (p=.024, p=.045, p=.017, p=.041, and p=.004, respectively). There was also a marginal meaningful decrease in serum presepsin levels in the intervention group compared to the placebo at the end of the study (p=.054). However, total lymphocyte count showed a significant increase in the nano-curcumin group compared to the placebo at the end-point (p=.04). No significant differences were found in the level of lymphocyte and the ratios of neutrophil/lymphocyte and platelet/lymphocyte between the study groups. Moreover, no significant between-group differences were observed for other study outcomes, post-intervention. Collectively, nano-curcumin may be a useful adjuvant therapy in critically ill patients with sepsis. However, further trials are suggested to examine the effects of nano-curcumin in the management of sepsis and its complications. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Curcumin (1,7-bis[4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5- dione) or diferuloylmethane is widely used in medicine due to its several biological properties. Recent evidence has shown that curcumin possesses multiple pharmacological activities including immune-modulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-microbial effects. In this study, it was observed that nano-curcumin at a dose of 160mg for 10days, without side effects, reduced some inflammatory factors and regulated the immune responses in sepsis patients. For the first time, this trial was conducted to determine the effect of nano-curcumin on hematological indices and the serum levels of presepsin and IL-8.
