Association between fish and shellfish consumption, n-3polyunsaturated fatty acids, and gastric cancer risk: the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study.

Fish and shellfish consumption is suggested to be a cancer-protective factor. However, studies investigating this association for gastric cancer, especially considering Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and atrophic gastritis (AG), are limited. We investigated gastric cancer risk associated with fish, shellfish, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs)consumption among Japanese adults. 90,504 subjects enrolled in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study(JPHC Study) were followed until December 2013. Dietary intake data were collected using a food frequency questionnaire. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) werecalculated for gastric cancer risk associated with fish and shellfishconsumption and marine n-3 PUFAs (sum of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) using Cox proportional hazards models. Among those with avaliable data, we conducted a subgroup analysis takingH. pylori infectionand AGstatusinto consideration. There were 2,701 gastric cancer cases during an average of 15years of follow-up. We observed an increased gastric cancer risk for salted fish consumption for men [HR for fifth quintile versus first quintile 1.43 (95% CI 1.18-1.75)] and for women [HR 1.33 (95% CI 1.00-1.77)]. We observed a weak risk reduction trend for women as the intake ofmarine n-3 PUFAs increased (p-trend:0.07). When we included H. pylori infection and atrophic gastritis status in the analysis, the associations diminished. Our results suggest that salted fish increases gastric cancer risk for men and women, while marine n-3 PUFAs marginally decreases this risk among women in Japan.

Morphometric traits, carcass characteristics and biochemical composition of meat between local and synthetic Algerian rabbit genotypes

The aim of this research was to study the genetic and sex effects on morphometric traits, carcass characteristics and biochemical composition of rabbit meat of two Algerian breeds, local population and synthetic line (ITELV2006). For this purpose, 60 animals (30 per group) from 90 d of age were used. The body weight and the morphometric traits recorded were determined using a digital weighing scale and flexible tape. At slaughter, carcass traits, and biochemical meat quality characteristics such us protein, fat, ash, moisture content and fatty acids composition were measured. The results obtained revealed that the synthetic line has higher values of morphometric measurements than the local breed. The sex factor and the interaction genotype X sex had a significant effect only on chest circumference (P < 0.05). It is also observed, that the majority of carcass characteristics were more affected by genetic than by genetics. Which body weight at slaughter of males and females derived from synthetic lines were 41% and 22% higher than local rabbits respectively. Furthermore, the new line displayed a good meat yield (60%) with a higher mean value (+ 5%) of dressing out % rather than the local one. Regarding, the proximate biochemical composition of meat, the synthetic line has shown also the highest content of protein and fat (P < 0.05). Concerning with fatty acids profile; the local breed exhibited the highest content of n3 and n6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3 and n6 PUFAs), consequently, the lower value of n-6: n-3 ratio (9.82) and the highest value of polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids (PUFAs/SFAs: 0.73). Finally, it should be emphasized that the relevant differences recorded in this experiment are assumed to be primarily genetic, thus, sex might be regarded as a minor factor. The synthetic showed better characteristics due to its genetic potential. Therefore, it is recommended to be used for Algerian meat production.

Multimodal machine learning for modeling infant head circumference, mothers’ milk composition, and their shared environment

Links between human milk (HM) and infant development are poorly understood and often focus on individual HM components. Here we apply multi-modal predictive machine learning to study HM and head circumference (a proxy for brain development) among 1022 mother-infant dyads of the CHILD Cohort. We integrated HM data (19 oligosaccharides, 28 fatty acids, 3 hormones, 28 chemokines) with maternal and infant demographic, health, dietary and home environment data. Head circumference was significantly predictable at 3 and 12 months. Two of the most associated features were HM n3-polyunsaturated fatty acid C22:6n3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA; p = 9.6e−05) and maternal intake of fish (p = 4.1e−03), a key dietary source of DHA with established relationships to brain function. Thus, using a systems biology approach, we identified meaningful relationships between HM and brain development, which validates our statistical approach, gives credence to the novel associations we observed, and sets the foundation for further research with additional cohorts and HM analytes.

Enhancement of γ-Aminobutyric Acid and the Characteristics of Nutrition and Function in White Quinoa through Ultrasound Stress at the Pre-Germination Stage.

The global production of quinoa has been increasing in recent years. In plant-based foods, ultrasound stress has received increasing attention, owing to its ability to enhance the production of primary and secondary metabolites. We studied the effects of ultrasonic stress at the pre-germination stage on the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) accumulation and characteristics of nutrition and function in quinoa. The results showed that ultrasonic conditions of 100 W for 4 min promoted an increase in GABA content by 9.15-fold, to 162.47 ± 6.69 mg/100 g·DW, compared to that of untreated quinoa, through promoting a 10.2% and 71.9% increase in the water absorption and glutamate decarboxylase activity of quinoa, respectively. Meanwhile, compared to untreated quinoa, ultrasonic stress at the pre-germination stage enhanced the total phenolic, total flavonoid, and total saponin contents of quinoa by 10.2%, 33.6%, and 90.7%, to 3.29 mg GA/g·DW, 104.0 mg RE/100 g·DW, and 7.13 mg/g, respectively, without decreasing its basic nutritional quality. Ultrasonic stress caused fissures on the surface of quinoa starch particles. Additionally, germination under ultrasonic stress increased the n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids by 14.4%. Furthermore, ultrasonic stress at the pre-germination stage promoted the scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl1-picrylhydrazyl radicals and inhibitions of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and pancreatic lipase by 14.4%, 14.9%, 24.6%, and 20.0% in vitro, compared to untreated quinoa. The results indicated that the quinoa sprouted via ultrasonic stress could represent a promising method through which to develop nutritionally balanced whole grains rich in GABA, with hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activities, which could provide theoretical support for the development of functional whole-grain foods based on quinoa.

Characterization of the invasive macroalgae Rugulopteryx Okamurae for potential biomass valorisation

This study aimed to examine the composition and properties of the invasive macroalgae R. okamurae and explore potential applications. The results showed that the seaweed biomass is mainly composed of structural carbohydrates, with alginate being the main constituent, accounting for 32 % of its total composition and with a mannuronic and guluronic acid ratio (M/G) ratio of 0.93. It also has a relatively high concentration of fucose, related to the presence of fucoidans that have important biological functions. Among the mineral contents, a high magnesium and calcium (7107 and 5504 mg/kg) concentration, and the presence of heavy metals above legislated thresholds, were notable. R. okamurae also contained a high lipid content of 17 %, mainly composed of saturated fatty acids, but with a significant fraction of n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (18 %) resulting in a low n6/n3 ratio (0.31), that has health benefits. The protein content of R. okamurae was 12 %, with high-quality proteins, as essential amino acids (mainly leucine, phenylalanine and valine) constitute 32 % of the total amino acids. It also showed a high polyphenol content and outstanding antioxidant properties (106.88 mg TE/g). Based on these findings, R. okamurae has significant potential as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds that can add value to different sectors, including food, feed, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Marine phospholipid nanoliposomes: A promising therapeutic approach for inflammatory bowel disease: Preparation, safety, and efficacy evaluation

Promising findings have been emerged from studies utilizing n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) supplementation in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Introduction of marine phospholipids which combine n3 PUFA with phosphatidylcholine in a nanoliposome formulation offers enhanced pharmacological efficacy due to physical stability, improved bioavailability, and specific targeting to inflamed colitis tissues. In the present study, a marine phospholipid-based nanoliposome formulation was developed and optimized, resulting in nanovesicles of approximately 107.7 ± 1.3 nm in size, 0.18 ± 0.01 PDI, and − 32.03 ± 3.16 mV ZP. The nanoliposomes exhibited spherical vesicles with stable properties upon incubation at SGF as shown by the TEM, DLS, and turbidity measurements over 3 h. MPL nanoliposomes were cytocompatible until the concentration of 500 µg/mL as per MTT assay and taken by macrophages through macropinocytosis and caveolae pathways, and demonstrated significant inhibitory activity against reactive oxygen species (ROS) in LPS-stimulated macrophages. They were also shown to be blood-compatible and safe for administration in healthy mice. In a colitis mouse model, the nanoliposomes displayed preferential distribution in the inflamed gut, delaying the onset of colitis when administered prophylactically. These findings highlight the potential of marine phospholipid nanoliposomes as a promising therapeutic approach for managing inflammatory bowel disease.

Sustainable utilization of unsaleable walnut kernel in substitution for corn grain in the diet of fattening lambs improves growth performance and meat quality.

As a cost-effective typical co-product of walnut processing; this study aimed to investigate the effects of feeding poor quality, unsaleable walnut kernel, also known as wasted walnut (WW) kernel, on growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality and fatty acid (FA) composition of fattening lambs. The experiment was conducted using 24 fattening lambs (27 ±1.07 kg initial BW) assigned to two total mixed concentrate-based diets, over a 80-day experimental period on a completely randomized design. Dietary treatments were: 1) WW (10% WW), and 2) CON (without WW). Average daily and total gain, and final weight increased with WW inclusion (P < 0.05). Also, a significant enhancement in feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05) and carcass cooler shrink loss (P = 0.03) were observed by feeding WW. Dry matter intake (DMI) was not influenced by feeding WW as did carcass prime cuts, meat, bone and fat-tail; however, the backfat thickness was increased (P = 0.01). WW inclusion reduced cholesterol and increased protein load in muscle tissue (P ≤ 0.05). Moreover, this inclusion led to higher concentration of vaccenic acid (VA), conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and C20 polyunsaturated FAs (PUFA), total n3 and n6 PUFA in muscle and fat-tail (P ≤ 0.05). Due to enhanced animal performance, also chemical and FA composition of muscle and adipose tissue, WW can be included in fattening lamb diets as a rich source of protein and PUFA.

53 Hemp seed oil as a novel fatty acid supplement for horses

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play a role in regulating the body's response to inflammation. Most grains fed to horses are high in linoleic acid (LA), a pro-inflammatory n6 PUFA, compared with α-linolenic acid (ALA), an anti-inflammatory n3 PUFA. Recent interest in hemp (Cannabis sativa) seed oil (HSO) as a PUFA source has arisen due to its unique fatty acid (FA) profile, which includes γ-linolenic acid (GLA), an n6 PUFA with anti-inflammatory properties. Dietary GLA is rapidly converted to dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA), a precursor to anti-inflammatory eicosanoids. Manipulating dietary FA may lead to alterations in tissue FA profiles in the horse which could promote a reduced inflammatory response. Thus, our objective was to determine if oral supplementation of HSO for 28 d would cause detectable changes in FA composition in synovial fluid (SF) and skeletal muscle (MUS). Six Thoroughbred geldings (11 ± 3.2 yrs, 568 ± 26 kg BW) were used in a crossover experiment with 2 consecutive 63d periods. Horses were offered a control (CON) basal diet of hay and concentrate or the basal diet with the addition of 166 mL HSO delivering 5g GLA. Diets were designed to be isocaloric. Over 7d, HSO was introduced gradually, maintained for another 28d, and then removed and horses resumed basal diets for an additional 28d. Horses were weighed, and body condition score (BCS) assessed weekly. MUS and SF samples werecollected on d0, d35, and d63 of each period. MUS biopsies were taken from the middle gluteus muscle at a depth of 8cm. SF was collected from the left carpus joint. FA were extracted from MUS and SF and analyzed by GC. Individual FA are represented as g of FA per 100g of total fatty acids. Data were analyzed using Proc MIXED in SAS (v.15.1 SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). No changes in BW or BCS were observed throughout the study. In SF, GLA was detected after 28d of HSO supplementation (0.32 ± 0.06g/100g) but not at any other time point. On d 28, horses supplemented with HSO also had greater SF DGLA (0.31 ± 0.04g/100g) than CON (0.19 ± 0.04g/100g; P = 0.04). MUS ALA tended (P = 0.07) to be greater in horses fed CON compared with HSO. No other differences were observed for FA in MUS or SF. These results indicate that 28d of HSO supplementation can modify FA profiles in equine skeletal muscle and synovial fluid. This could potentially influence inflammation signaling molecules and subsequently the inflammatory response, however, longer studies with more horses are needed to determine peak incorporation and the effects of varying quantities of HSO in the diet.

Altered profile of plasma phospholipids in woman with recurrent pregnancy loss and recurrent implantation failure treated with lipid emulsion therapy.

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) and Recurrent Implantation Failure (RIF) are highly heterogeneous condition and many of the mechanisms involved still require elucidation. The aim was to analyze the lipidomic profile in plasma of women with RPL and RIF before and after receiving the Lipid Emulsion Therapy (LET) containing 10% fish oil (SMOFlipid® 20%). This study included twenty-six women with RPL or RIF from immunological or inflammatory causes, with elevated natural killer cell levels and divided into a Pregnancy Loss or a Live Birth group according to the outcome. The women received intravenous LET and sample collecting was done before the first, third and fifth dose of LET in the pregnant women. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF MS) and multivariate statistical methods were performed to evaluate the profile of phospholipids present in the women's plasma. An increase of phosphatidylcholines (PC) 40:8 and 36:5 levels with predominance of n6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was observed in plasma lipids of the Pregnancy Loss Group compared to Live Birth Group. We also observed an increase in the relative abundance of n3 PUFA-PC species (42:10 and 36:6) and LysoPC 15:0 with the long term use of LET. The greater availability of n3 PUFA in plasma of the pregnant women stemming from LET use can be considered advantageous regarding the alteration of the phospholipid profile and its postulated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory role.

Camelina sativa as a sustainable and feasible feedstuff for laying poultry: A review

Camelina sativa is a promising oilseed crop with unique characteristics, including rapid growth, drought and frost tolerance, low input requirements, and resistance to pests and diseases. It offers diverse applications in both feed and non-feed sectors, primarily due to its high levels of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and antioxidants. However, the presence of secondary plant metabolites in camelina restricts its use in poultry nutrition. These compounds may inhibit some digestive enzymes, increase digesta viscosity, and affect nutrients absorption, potentially compromising bird health and product quality. Various techniques, such as heat treatment, multi-enzyme supplementation, and copper supplementation, have been employed to mitigate the negative effects of these antinutritional compounds. Inclusion at high levels (&gt;10%) of camelina by-products in poultry diets has been found to decrease nutrients digestibility and laying performance. Nonetheless, the inclusion of camelina by-products, particularly oil, in the diets resulted in comparable or improved egg quality. The egg yolk fatty acid profile exhibited a higher content of PUFA, reducing the n-6/n-3 ratio, thereby enhancing the nutritional value of eggs. Sensory evaluations showed no significant differences in product quality among diet groups. This review highlights the feeding value of camelina by-products and provides a comprehensive overview of the existing literature, focusing on digestibility, performance, and egg quality evaluation in laying poultry diets.

The hepatoprotective effects of n3-polyunsaturated fatty acids against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in diabetic rats through the FOXO1/PPARα/GABARAPL1 signalling pathway

AimWe compared the efficacy of n3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3-PUFAs) and metformin in halting the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) developed in the milieu of insulin deficiency. Main methodsNAFLD was induced by a chronic high-fat diet (HFD) in male Sprague Dawley rats, rendered diabetic by a low dose streptozotocin (STZ). Diabetic rats were treated with n3-PUFAs (300 mg/kg/d) or metformin (150 mg/kg/d) for 8 weeks. Improvements in the NAFLD score and hepatic insulin resistance (IR) were addressed and correlated to changes in the hepatic expression of Forkhead box protein O1 (FOXO-1), microtubule-associated proteins 1A/1B light chain 3B (MAP1LC3B) and gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor-associated protein-like 1 (GABARAPL1) genes. Hepatic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α), and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) protein expression was also assessed. Key findingsDriven by insulin deficiency and HFD, the FOXO-1 gene along with its downstream targets, MAP1LC3B and GABARAPL1, were highly expressed in the liver tissue of the HFD/STZ group. Meanwhile, hepatic expression of PPAR-α and Bcl-2 was markedly decreased. These abnormalities coincided with a marked increase in the hepatic IR and NAFLD activity. Comparable to metformin, n3-PUFAs were able to rearrange hepatic PPAR-α and FOXO-1 expression in HFD/STZ rats, resulting in improved diabetic/steatotic liver phenotype. SignificanceAlong with the enhancement of PPAR-α expression, inhibition of FoxO1/GABARAPL1/MAP1LC3B transcription is suggested as a core mechanism for the protective effects of n3-PUFAs on hepatic IR and NAFLD. Under conditions of insulin deficiency, n3-PUFAs retain their potential as a safe and promising approach for the control of NAFLD.

A Rapid Procedure for the Simultaneous Determination of Eugenol, Linalool and Fatty Acid Composition in Basil Leaves.

Eugenol and linalool are often the most abundant volatile compounds found in basil (Ocimum basilicum L., Lamiaceae) leaves, and they are interesting for the aroma they provide and for their numerous beneficial bioactivities. Their determination is thus needed for several purposes. In the present study, to avoid the previous isolation of essential oil, the direct solvent extraction is proposed coupled with a transmethylation to convert acyl lipids into fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs), thus assessing the possible simultaneous analysis of eugenol and linalool with FAMEs by gas chromatography coupled to flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The method has been validated and applied to ten basil leaves samples in which eugenol and linalool were found in mean concentrations of 2.80 ± 0.15 and 1.01 ± 0.04 g kg-1 (dry weight), respectively. FAMEs composition was dominated by linolenic acid (52.1-56.1%) followed by palmitic acid (19.3-22.4%) and linoleic acid (9.6-11.3%). The ratio of n6-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)/n3-PUFAs was in the range of 0.17-0.20 in the investigated samples. The proposed method exploits a rapid procedure requiring 40 min, making use of a small amount of solvent and allowing the simultaneous determination of molecules contributing to assess the quality of this worldwide appreciated herb.

Lipid nutritional value and bioaccessibility of novel ready‐to‐eat seafood products with encapsulated bioactives

SummaryIn order to develop a healthy food with easily absorbable nutrients for the elderly, functional ready‐to‐eat seafood based on restructured fish fillets (from undervalued fish species) and encapsulated fish oil was prepared and assessed. Four restructured fish products (raw fillet, RF and raw fillet with encapsulated material incorporation, RF+, and fried fillet, CF and fried fillet with encapsulated material incorporation, CF+) were tested. The study entailed characterising lipid fraction and determining lipid and fatty acid (FA) bioaccessibility. Frying increased the weight of the n6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) content, from 3.9–5.1% to 6.8–10.2%. PUFA concentration decreased from 32.6–45.0 (RF and CF) to 28.3–34.4% (RF+ and CF+). Regarding bioaccessibility, the n3/n6 PUFA ratios were lowered in RF and RF+ and augmented in CF and CF+. To meet the EPA + DHA RDI and derive potential benefits for the elderly, two servings of RF, RF+ and CF+ and three servings of CF per week would suffice by ignoring bioaccessibility. However, based on bioaccessibility, 12 servings of RF and 6 servings of RF+ and CF contrast with only 2 servings of CF+. CF+ would be an excellent choice for enhancing n3 PUFA intake, thus representing a way of valorising undervalued marine resources through innovative functional food.

Maternal Supplementation with Polyphenols and Omega-3 Fatty Acids during Pregnancy: Prenatal Effects on Fetal Fatty Acid Composition in the Iberian Pig.

Simple SummaryThe present study aimed to determine the effects of maternal dietary supplementation combining hydroxytyrosol and n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3-PUFA) from day 35 to day 100 of gestation on the fatty acid (FA) composition of the offspring tissues of the Iberian pig. No effects were found in the plasma FA composition of the dams but higher levels of n3-PUFA were found in the plasma and different tissues (muscle, liver, and brain) of the supplemented fetuses. These findings may have important implications for piglets’ health and may offer guidance for achieving human dietary n3-PUFA recommendations.Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) is a major problem in pig production and different strategies, mainly maternal supplementation with different agents, are currently being studied. The combination of hydroxytyrosol and n3-PUFA seems to be a promising treatment to counteract IUGR, since the combination may help improve n3-PUFA composition and lower the inflammatory status of IUGR piglets. The aim of the present study is to determine the effects of a maternal supplementation, from day 35 to day 100 of pregnancy, with linseed oil and hydroxytyrosol on the fetal FA composition. The results showed higher n3 levels, including eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic FA in the offspring from treated gilts, which showed lower n6-PUFA/n3-PUFA (n6/n3) ratios. Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were also affected by treatment, especially in the muscle and brain. Thus, a maternal supplementation with linseed oil and hydroxytyrosol affected the fetal FA tissue composition, which could have implications in pig production due to the improvement of the piglets’ health status.

The influence of feeding media enriched with different oils on the fatty acid composition of the Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens)

The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) has emerged as an interesting alternative protein source in animal feed due to its ability to grow on various substrates. Although it has many rearing benefits and possible applications, it has an unfavourable fatty acid profile if used for human consumption due to its high content of lauric acid and low content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In order to investigate whether the lipid composition of black soldier fly larvae can be altered, the feeding media were supplemented with varying concentrations of fish, linseed or coconut oil (1, 2.5 and 5%). Two-week-old larvae were collected, measured and their tissue fatty acid composition was determined. The fatty acid profile of the larvae showed significant plasticity, depending on the life stage and the fatty acid composition of the feeding media. The addition of 2.5 and 5% of different oils significantly changed the fatty acid composition of larvae, depending on the type and percentage of oil. The n6/n3 ratio was considerably improved by supplementing fish and linseed oil. The addition of linseed oil increased the content of linolenic acid, but bioconversion to eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids was low. In contrast, the addition of fish oil significantly increased the content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in the larvae. The content of lauric acid significantly increased after coconut addition. The trial showed that by using different oils, the lipid composition of black soldier fly larvae could be specifically changed to increase the beneficial long chain n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and the amount of lauric or linolenic acid.

Determination of Proximate Composition and Fatty Acid Profiles of Commercial Fish Feeds

The proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of the selected fish feeds (S, A, G3, and G6) prepared with different rations were investigated. The results showed that the crude protein, lipid, moisture, and ash level in feeds were in the range of 44.07% – 46.69%, 15.72% – 18.32%, 6.54% – 8.41% and 7.44% – 11.37%, respectively. The percentages of total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were higher in group A than in all other group, whereas the corresponding total monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) content was lower. All of the feeds had significant levels of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). The n6/n3 ratio of feeds was in the range of 1.15 - 1.98. The data obtained indicate that the % composition of n3 PUFAs was lower for G3 feed. These feeds were good sources of EPA (in the range of 3.13% - 4.57%) and DHA (in the range of 3.41% - 8.50%). Therefore, it was concluded that these fish feeds are suitable as a balanced food choice for aquaculture.

Dietary sodium butyrate and/or vitamin D3 supplementation alters growth performance, meat quality, chemical composition, and oxidative stability in broilers

The present study was conducted to elucidate the effects of sodium butyrate (SB) and vitamin D3 (VD3) supplementation on meat quality, oxidative stability, and nutritional value of the broiler chicken. The results indicated that dietary SB decreased lightness (L*), cooking and drip loss, free fatty acids (FFA), C14:0, C16:0, saturated fatty acids (SFA), C20:4n6, and n-6: n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and increased DPPH and ABTS in chicken meat. The PUFAs content in the chicken meat increased only when SB was added along with higher VD3 levels. However, the amino acid content was reduced with an increase in the VD3 levels. In conclusion, dietary SB supplementation improved chicken meat quality by enhancing the antioxidant capacity and physical properties. Moreover, adding SB or combined with higher VD3 levels optimized the fatty acid composition. However, higher VD3 levels reduced the amino acid content of the chicken meat.

Maternal and Neonatal Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Intake and Risk of Neurodevelopmental Impairment in Premature Infants.

The N3 and N6 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA) are essential for proper neurodevelopment in early life. These fatty acids are passed from mother to infant via the placenta, accreting into fetal tissues such as brain and adipose tissue. Placental transfer of LCPUFA is highest in the final trimester, but this transfer is abruptly severed with premature birth. As such, efforts have been made to supplement the post-natal feed of premature infants with LCPUFA to improve neurodevelopmental outcomes. This narrative review analyzes the current body of evidence pertinent to neurodevelopmental outcomes after LCPUFA supplementation in prematurely born infants, which was identified via the reference lists of systematic and narrative reviews and PubMed search engine results. This review finds that, while the evidence is weakened by heterogeneity, it may be seen that feed comprising 0.3% DHA and 0.6% AA is associated with more positive neurodevelopmental outcomes than LCPUFA-deplete feed. While no new RCTs have been performed since the most recent Cochrane meta-analysis in 2016, this narrative review provides a wider commentary; the wider effects of LCPUFA supplementation in prematurely born infants, the physiology of LCPUFA accretion into preterm tissues, and the physiological effects of LCPUFA that affect neurodevelopment. We also discuss the roles of maternal LCPUFA status as a modifiable factor affecting the risk of preterm birth and infant neurodevelopmental outcomes. To better understand the role of LCPUFAs in infant neurodevelopment, future study designs must consider absolute and relative availabilities of all LCPUFA species and incorporate the LCPUFA status of both mother and infant in pre- and postnatal periods.

Fatty Acid Metabolism and Derived-Mediators Distinctive of PPAR-α Activation in Obese Subjects Post Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surger (BS) is characterized by lipid metabolic changes as a response to the massive release of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) from adipose depots. The study aimed at evaluating changes in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) metabolism and biosynthesis of the lipid mediators N-acylethanolamines (NAE), as indices of nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α activation. The observational study was performed on 35 subjects (27 female, 8 male) with obesity, undergoing bariatric surgery. We assessed plasma FA and NAE profiles by LC-MS/MS, clinical parameters and anthropometric measures before and 1 and 6 months after bariatric surgery. One month after bariatric surgery, as body weight and clinical parameters improved significantly, we found higher plasma levels of N-oleoylethanolamine, arachidonic and a 22:6-n3/20:5-n3 ratio as evidence of PPAR-α activation. These changes corresponded to higher circulating levels of NEFA and a steep reduction of the fat mass. After 6 months 22:6-n3/20:5-n3 remained elevated and fat mass was further reduced. Our data suggest that the massive release of NEFA from adipose tissue at 1-Post, possibly by inducing PPAR-α, may enhance FA metabolism contributing to fat depot reduction and improved metabolic parameters in the early stage. However, PUFA metabolic changes favor n6 PUFA biosynthesis, requiring a nutritional strategy aimed at reducing the n6/n3 PUFA ratio.
