Optimization of municipal solid waste collection system: systematic review with bibliometric literature analysis

AbstractMunicipal solid waste management (MSWM) requires significant planning and objective definitions of each of its stages. Waste collection and transportation stages are of utmost importance, and they represent a significant cost of the process. In this context, a systematic study using bibliometric analysis was conducted, seeking to identify and understand the applied methodologies and tools, as well as which parameters and approaches are employed to optimize the solid urban waste collection system. The analysis portfolio features 12 publications, focusing on the optimization of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection systems, mostly with the aim of optimizing routes for transporting waste from the collection points to the final destination, with the goal of reducing the costs of this stage. Results highlight how these studies only consider as optimization criteria the reduction of the travelled distance and lack other dimensions (such as an environmental impact perspective). Some of the studies demonstrate the vital role of technology in optimizing the waste collection operation, from the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to using sensors or smart bins. Future research efforts should widen the scope of what is considered in optimizing the waste collection system.

Sustainable waste management and waste-to-energy in the context of a circular economy through various waste management technologies.

Inappropriate waste management is a considerable ecological risk, leading to detrimental effects on the soil, air, and water quality. It is imperative to address these concerns promptly to minimize the repercussions of solid waste on public health and the ecosystem. It is evident that the level of economic growth directly impacts waste generation. This study intends to use the life cycle assessment (LCA) technique to evaluate the environmental impacts of four alternative municipal solid waste (MSW) management scenarios in Peshawar City, Pakistan. The goal is to discover an option that is both sustainable and minimizes environmental damage. The study examined the system boundaries encompassing the collection and transportation of MSW, along with its processing and final disposal, employing composting, anaerobic digestion (AD), material recovery facilities (MRF), and landfill methods. Comprehensive field studies and an in-depth literature review provided the data regarding Peshawar's existing MSW management system and the proposed scenarios, all of which was inventoried in the OpenLCA 1.10.3 database. Following data collection, the CML-IA technique was employed to analyze the data, measuring the environmental footprint in terms of climate change potential, human toxicity, acidification potential, photochemical oxidation, and eutrophication. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to identify the influence of varying recycling rates on the environmental strain correlated with the proposed scenarios. The analysis results indicated that scenario S2, which combined composting, landfilling, and MRF, exhibited the least environmental impact compared to the other considered scenarios. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis reflected an inverse correlation between alterations in the recycling rate and the total environmental impact. To counter the environmental problems arising from waste generation, it is essential to incorporate principles of the circular economy into the MSW management approach.

A comparative study on the selection of the most suitable route for the collection and transportation of municipal solid waste

Worldwide, approximately US$410 billion is spent annually on the management of four billion tons of domestic solid waste (MSW). The transportation cost alone accounts for more than 50% of the total expenditure on solid waste management. This cost constitutes approximately 85% of the collection and transportation cost. 54.4% of environmental protection expenditures cover waste services. The population of the Barış neighborhood in the Kayapınar district of Diyarbakır, which is the subject of this study, is 23 581 according to the 2020 TUIK data. The average amount of waste produced per person in a month is 7.6 kg/person. In the results of these statistics, it has been seen that the investment costs in the transportation of wastes are increasing day by day. In this study, the performance of ant colony and genetic algorithms, which are among the artificial intelligence techniques, and route optimization using GIS (geographic information system) software were tried to be achieved to solve the GSP (traveling salesman problem), which is included in the route planning problems. The results of the study showed that savings were achieved with an improvement of 15.1576% in GIS, 29.8104% in GA (Genetic algorithm) and 40.5171% in ACS (Ant Colony System) compared to real life. As a result of the application, it has been observed that the ant colony algorithm is superior to the Genetic algorithm and GIS, as it draws a shorter route in terms of distance and obtains a better result in terms of improvement rate.

Characteristics and mechanism of slagging in a 500 t/d MSW incinerator

With the promotion of classified collection of municipal solid waste (MSW), the heating value of waste sent to incinerators has significantly increased, which affects slagging and ash deposition. Thoroughly studying the slag characteristics in incinerators is important for determining its formation conditions and processes. In this study, slag samples from the furnace and superheaters of a 500 t/d incinerator were comprehensively studied. The slag characteristics were measured using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and field-emission high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the chemical thermodynamic equilibrium calculations were carried out using FactSage; and the melting kinetics were analysed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that under the high-temperature environment of the furnace, CaO and Fe2O3/MgO/Al2O3 react with SiO2 to form low-melting-point eutectic crystals, which are in a molten or semi-molten state and easily adhere to the inner wall of the furnace to form slag that is difficult to remove. CaSO4 does not melt in the furnace but moves with the flue gas and is mainly deposited on the surfaces of the third- and second-stage superheaters. Na2SO4 and K3Na(SO4)2 are in a gaseous state under high-temperature conditions in the furnace, and then transform into a liquid or solid state and condense on the surface of the superheaters. The ash melting process in the furnace can be described using zero-order kinetics. These research results provide a theoretical foundation for the detailed prediction of slagging and ash deposition in waste incinerators.

Optimizing municipal solid waste collection vehicle routing with a priority on infectious waste in a mountainous city landscape context

The growth of the economy, urban sprawl, and population expansion precipitate a substantial increase in solid waste generation, particularly in vital regions like the capital area and economically significant cities, including renowned tourist destinations. Furthermore, the protracted spread of the COVID-19 virus has led to a notable increase in the quantity of infectious waste. In this regard, the safe and effective management of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and transportation emerges as a major concern in MSW management. This paper aims to determine routes for waste collection, both infectious and noninfectious, from waste collection points to diverse waste disposal sites in the mountainous Khao Kho district of Phetchabun province, located in northern Thailand, with the objective of minimizing total fuel consumption and service time. Fuel consumption is contingent upon both the distance traveled and the prevailing condition of the road. The road condition exerts an influence on the vehicle's speed, thereby directly impacting fuel efficiency. In the context of service time, priority is assigned to collection points with substantial quantities of infectious waste, given the imperative to promptly dispose of such waste to mitigate the risk of transmission. In this paper, a mixed-integer programming model and three modified differential evolution (MDE) algorithms were developed to solve the problem. The computational results reveal that the MDE outperformed the traditional DE and is effective for the MSW transportation management system.

MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION ROUTING OPTIMIZATION BASED ON IAC-SFLA

In order to realize the efficient collection and low-carbon transport of municipal garbage and accelerate the realize the “dual-carbon” goal for urban transport system, based on the modeling and solving method of vehicle routing problem, the municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and transport routing optimization of an Improved Ant Colony-Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (IAC-SFLA) is proposed. In this study, IAC-SFLA routing Optimization model with the goal of optimization collection distance, average loading rate, number of collections, and average number of stations is constructed. Based on the example data of garbage collection and transport in southern Baohe District, the comparative analysis with single-vehicle models, multiple-vehicle models, and basic ant colony algorithms. The multi-vehicle model of collection and transportation is superior to the single-vehicle model and the improved ant colony algorithm yields a total collection distance that is 19.76 km shorter and an average loading rate that rises by 4.15% from 93.95% to 98.1%. Finally, the improved ant colony algorithm solves for the domestic waste collection and transportation path planning problem in the north district of Baohe. Thus, the effectiveness and application of the proposed algorithm is verified. The research result can provide reference for vehicle routing in the actual collection and transport process, improve collection and transport efficiency, and achieve the goal of energy conservation and emission reduction.

Analysis of using Internet of Things devices to manage the collection and transportation of municipal solid waste

The article analyzes the influence of M2M objects, the Internet of Things, robotics, and machine intelligence and vision systems on the municipal solid waste management system. It is demonstrated that goal-oriented, sustainable activity and development imply ensuring harmony in the homeostatic phase space of possible events. However, the life of society in the digital space is based on an increasingly expanding and often unexplored range of non-target manifestations of the development and application of information and telecommunication systems and technologies for working with digital data, carried out, among other things, with the support of government agencies.

Optimizing routes of municipal waste collection: an application algorithm

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to formulate an algorithm designed to discern the optimal routes for efficient municipal solid waste (MSW) collection.Design/methodology/approachThe research method is simulation. The proposed algorithm combines heuristics derived from the constructive genetic algorithm (CGA) and tabu search (TS). The algorithm is applied in a municipality located at Southern Brazil, with 40,000 inhabitants, circa.FindingsThe implementation achieved a remarkable 25.44% reduction in daily mileage of the vehicles, resulting in savings of 150.80 km/month and 1,809.60 km/year. Additionally, it reduced greenhouse gas emissions (including fossil CO2, CH4, N2O, total CO2e and biogenic CO2) by an average of 26.15%. Moreover, it saved 39 min of daily working time.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research should thoroughly analyze the feasibility of decision-making regarding planning, scheduling and scaling municipal services using digital technology.Practical implicationsThe municipality now has a tool to improve public management, mainly related with municipal solid waste. The municipality reduced the cost of public management of municipal solid waste, redirecting funds to other priorities, such as public health and education.Originality/valueThe study integrates MSW collection service with an online platform based on Google MapsTM. The advantages of employing geographical information systems are agility, low cost, adaptation to changes and accuracy.

Optimizing Segregated Waste Collection Routes as a Decision-Making Problem in the Municipal Solid Waste Management System in Small Town

Routing vehicles is a generic decision-making problem of strategic management in any business serving customers in distributed locations with a limited fleet including municipal solid waste collection. This paper introduces an approach tailored for optimizing waste collection routes in small towns and rural areas where dead-end streets are typical in the road network. Leveraging the Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP), the approach employs optimal route determination taking advantage of the specific character of a road network with many dead-end streets. The service area for waste collection was aggregated, so the graph representing the map results in a relatively small data instance. This facilitated the application of the exact method, i.e. Mixed-Integer Programming using the OpenSolver tool in Excel. Conducted in collaboration with a municipal agency in southeastern Poland, this study outlines a comprehensive methodology, emphasizing the reduction of complex dead-end streets into singular nodes within the graph for effective route optimization. A comprehensive methodology is outlined alongside the solutions attained. Computational experiments focused on minimizing total travel distance during waste collection operations, demonstrating the methodology's success. Beyond efficiency gains, optimized routes hold potential for significant environmental impact reduction. The reduced travel distances result in decreased fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with sustainability goals. Developing an Excel-based decision support tool for municipal solid waste management is a significant contribution, particularly for decision-makers less familiar with Operations Research. The tool's compatibility within the spreadsheet environment streamlines waste management processes for municipal units, enhancing decision-making efficiency in optimizing waste collection routes.

Internet of Things-Assisted Vehicle Route Optimization for Municipal Solid Waste Collection

The efficient collection of municipal solid waste poses a significant challenge for the prospective development of smart cities. Using Internet of Things (IoT) technology enables the detection of various kinds of waste-related information, facilitating the implementation of a comprehensive plan for efficient waste collection. In this paper, an innovative waste collection mechanism leveraging the IoT sensors and widely recognized Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), a robust multi-criteria decision analysis method is introduced. Recognized for its ability to yield optimal solutions amidst multiple influencing parameters, TOPSIS proves particularly advantageous when confronted with diverse factors affecting decision making. A TOPSIS-based algorithm for optimal route selection is developed to collect waste using metrics such as toxicity, volume, and time duration of the waste while minimizing the route distance. To demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed algorithm, a comparative analysis with existing algorithms that are dependent on and optimized for single parameters is conducted. Through rigorous evaluation, it is shown that our proposed algorithm reduces the total distance traveled to collect the waste from all the bins by 14% by effectively considering multiple criteria and optimizing waste collection routes.

Feasibility and effects of GIS-based municipal solid waste vehicle routing for Bahrain

<p>In the realm of waste management, efficient route optimisation for municipal solid waste (MSW) collection is becoming increasingly crucial, particularly for developing nations with budgetary considerations. This study leverages the capabilities of the geographic information system (GIS) and integrates the Dijkstra algorithm to enhance route optimisation for MSW vehicles in Bahrain. Utilising comprehensive local vehicle routing data from Urbaser and applying GIS methodologies, three distinct areas in Bahrain were methodically analysed. The results revealed a notable 55% reduction in travel distance, a 17% decrease in time, and a yearly fuel cost saving of 6405 BHD (16,974 USD) in the optimal scenario. Given these findings, the potential applicability of this optimisation algorithm extends beyond Bahrain, suggesting significant benefits for regions with similar challenges. To further refine this approach, the integration of real-time traffic data into the routing algorithm is recommended. Other additions to the optimization process could include additional parameters such as safety.</p>

Impact of collection from indigenous lands on the municipal solid waste management system: A case study in the Amazon

In the Amazon, solid waste collection is generally restricted to urban areas, excluding indigenous lands and rural areas. The objective of this research was to analyse the impact of collecting waste generated from indigenous lands on the municipal solid waste (MSW) management system, through life cycle assessment (LCA). A case study in the Humaitá city, state of Amazonas, Brazil, was based on life cycle inventory data, obtained from literature and field surveys, such as the waste gravimetry. The LCA followed the model proposed by ISO 14040 and 14044 and estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for three MSW management scenarios. The first, called Base Scenario (SB), corresponded to that practiced in Humaitá: collection of MSW from the urban area, logistic, and disposal in landfill. The second scenario (S1) corresponded to SB and the collection of waste generated on indigenous lands in that municipality. The third scenario (S2) corresponded to S1, excluding organic waste, which would be destined for composting on indigenous lands. The base scenario totalled an emission of 1,539 t CO2eq.year-1. Collecting solid waste from indigenous lands would increase these GHG emissions by 5.2% (S1) and 0.9% (S2) in relation to SB. The decentralized management of organic waste through composting associated with the separation and storage of dry waste would reduce the burning of waste in indigenous areas, their environmental vulnerability and promote the inclusion of these peoples.

Optimization of Green Vehicle Paths Considering the Impact of Carbon Emissions: A Case Study of Municipal Solid Waste Collection and Transportation

In recent years, the waste produced as a result of the production and consumption activities of urban residents has led to significant environmental degradation and resource wastage. This paper focuses on the research object of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and transportation based on the concept of “sustainable development and green economy”. Firstly, this study examines the current state of urban domestic garbage collection and transportation. It analyzes the following challenges and deficiencies of the existing collection and transportation system: (1) the operating efficiency of garbage collection vehicles is low, resulting in a significant accumulation of waste on the roadside and within the community; (2) the vehicle collection and transportation routes are fixed, and there are empty vehicles running; (3) the amount of garbage on a route exceeds the vehicle’s loading capacity, which requires the vehicle to perform a second round of collection and transportation. To enhance the efficiency of urban garbage collection and transportation and minimize the collection and transportation costs, we are investigating the problem of optimizing the path for green vehicles. To comprehensively optimize the fixed cost, variable cost, and carbon emission cost incurred during vehicle operation, a vehicle routing model with time windows is established, taking into account vehicle load constraints. Carbon emission coefficient and carbon tax parameters are introduced into the model and the “fuel-carbon emission” conversion method is used to measure the carbon cost of enterprises. An improved ant colony optimization (ACO) method is proposed: (1) the introduction of a vehicle load factor improves the ant state transfer method; (2) the updated pheromone method is improved, and additional pheromone is added to both the feasible path and the path with the minimum objective function; (3) the max–min ACO algorithm is introduced to address the issue of premature convergence of the algorithm; (4) the embedding of a 2-opt algorithm further prevents the ACO algorithm from falling into the local optimum. Finally, the calculation results based on the example data demonstrate that the algorithm has a significant advantage over the genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The total transportation distance determined by this algorithm is shorter than that of the GA and PSO methods, and the total cost of the scheme is 1.66% and 1.89% lower than that determined by GA and PSO, respectively. Compared to the data from the actual case, the number of vehicles required in the operation of this algorithm and model is reduced by three. Additionally, the total cost, fixed cost, and carbon emission cost incurred by the vehicles during operation were reduced by 31.2%, 60%, and 25.3% respectively. The results of this study help the station to collect and distribute waste efficiently, while also achieving the goals of energy saving, consumption reduction, and emission reduction.

An Evaluation of the Impact of Illegal Dumping of Solid Waste on Public Health in Nigeria: A Case Study of Lagos State.

The illegal dumping of solid waste is a prevalent issue in Nigeria, affecting all states. Lagos State, in particular, faces waste disposal problems that stem from urbanization, negative public perception towards waste management, insufficient waste disposal education, poor waste disposal practices, and the disposal of waste at illegal and unauthorized sites. This situation is further exacerbated by inadequate municipal solid waste (MSW) collection rates, making it challenging to combat illegal dumping effectively. To align with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 of Sustainable Cities, which seeks to minimize negative environmental effects associated with managing MSW by 2030, this study aims to assess the environmental and health impact of illegal dumping of solid waste in Lagos State. The objectives of this study include assessing people's attitudes towards illegal dumping, evaluating the extent of environmental degradation resulting from illegal solid waste dumping in Lagos, and assessing the health risks associated with exposure to illegally dumped solid waste in Lagos State, as well as determining if illegal dumping contributes to the diseases prevalent in Lagos State. This study will use a quantitative approach to collect data from study participants on demographics, educational background, waste management, and environmental and health issues using computer-assisted self-administered questionnaires (Google Forms). This study will also use observations and photographs of illegally dumped waste in communities and major illegal dumpsites in the study area to provide valuable information to complement the questionnaire responses. By combining both approaches, the study will be able to capture both numerical data and people's behaviors and attitudes associated with illegal dumping. This study will use a mixed sampling method consisting of cluster sampling and convenience sampling, focusing on communities impacted by illegal dumping in Lagos State. The sample size for this study will be 100. The questionnaire for this study will be administered via a Google Forms link that will be shared through various online platforms, enabling participants to access and complete the questionnaire from any location with internet access. To ensure representative participation, as part of the informed consent form on the initial page of the online questionnaire, a screening question that requires participants to indicate if they live or work in the study areas or have been exposed to the impact of illegal dumping will be included. Only those who meet these criteria will be able to proceed with the study. The primary data obtained will be carefully analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28. The study's results will highlight the importance of the linkage between illegal dumping, environmental degradation, and diseases prevalent in Lagos State, which could inform policymakers and relevant departments in developing effective strategies to improve public health.

Developing Optimization Tools for Municipal Solid Waste Collection in the Argentine City of Berazategui

We apply mathematical and computational techniques to the development of an approach for optimizing the waste collection system of the Argentine city of Berazategui, 26 km south of Buenos Aires. Taking full account of the city’s particular characteristics, our objective is to not only improve the system’s efficiency but also ensure equitable workloads for waste collection truck crews, including both drivers and collectors. The optimization problem is partitioned into three stages. In the first stage, a heuristic constructs structurally simple collection zones that are balanced in terms of collectors’ walking distances. In the second stage, a mixed-integer linear programming model designs a collection truck route for each zone and minimizes its length. In the third and final stage, each truck is assigned to two zones in such a way as to equalize to the extent possible the length of drivers’ working day. Because working-day length is influenced by multiple factors, we formulate this objective as a biobjective optimization problem and solve it by integer linear programming coupled with an iterative algorithm. The city implemented the approach in early 2020, resulting in a markedly more equitable workload distribution and significant fuel savings and maintenance expense for the city. A mini review of hazardous wastes generated by environmental analytical laboratories: a perspective from Sri Lanka as an economically developing country.

Attention given to environmental pollution caused by environmental analytical (EA) laboratories is very poor in Sri Lanka (an economically developing country). This article discusses EA laboratory effluents and hazardous solid wastes, current environmental management practices, and the legislative requirements in Sri Lanka. Effluent quantities generated are low (29.99-63.09 L/week), but characterized with variable pH, high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and heavy metals, and very high ecotoxicity. Quantities of chemical-contaminated solid wastes is 80-100 kg/year (excluding outdated and rejected chemicals). Most laboratories dispose chemical-contaminated solid wastes mixed with non-hazardous recyclables using the services of local authorities and some laboratories (particularly in areas where there is no municipal solid waste collection), practice backyard dumping or open burning, while a few laboratories employ private parties to dispose or burn these wastes elsewhere. Only one laboratory is disposing chemical-contaminated solid wastes through co-processing. Appropriate waste management strategies (including some cleaner production concepts) are discussed in this paper for selected streams of hazardous wastes.

EVALUATION OF INNOVATIVE TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGIES FOR SEPARATE COLLECTION OF SOLID MUNICIPAL WASTE

The article discusses the assessment of innovative transport technologies for the separate collection of municipal solid waste (MSW). It was revealed that the processes associated with the separate collection and removal of municipal solid waste need to be implemented innovative solutions that will optimize these processes and significantly reduce costs. Therefore, a scheme was proposed with the introduction of a garbage truck with the possibility of separate collection of waste and the installation of sensors that monitor the filling of containers for collecting municipal solid waste.
 Purpose. Development of an effective scheme for organizing the movement of garbage vehicles and optimization of transport processes for the separate collection of MSW through the introduction of innovative transport technologies.
 Methodology in article economic-mathematical methods, and also statistical methods were used.
 Results. The most informative parameters have been obtained, showing some features for identifying solutions that allow increasing the volume of the solid food waste collection process.
 Practical implications it is expedient to apply the received results the economic subjects which are carrying out foreign economic activity, one of which elements are export operations.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANNING IN KABUL NEW CITY, AFGHANISTAN: A CASE STUDY

The municipal solid waste collection system and services of existing Kabul City are not acceptable socially, economically, and environmentally. This study was carried out in 2020–2021 for the Phase-1 area of Kabul New City (KNC). The study aims to analyze different MSWCSS for the KNC area and choose the best option during the planning stage. The average incremental cost for different collection systems was determined, and the results show that the total annualized cost (AN) of the proposed waste collection system (PWCS) is 855.3699 AFN/tonne, while the total operation and maintenance cost (OP) is 577.1235 AFN/tonne. The AN and OP of the stand-alone underground waste collection system (SAUWCS), tailored collection point system, traditional (prevailed) system, and alley waste collection system (AWCS) are 911.3032 AFN/tonne and 499.9017AFN/tonne, 1,681.762 AFN/tonne and 1,267.28 AFN/tonne, 308.9254 AFN/tonne and 186.3363 AFN/tonne, and 716.7706 AFN/tonne and 410.5375 AFN/tonne, respectively. The social and environmental analysis for the PWCS, SAUWCS, existing system, and AWCS obtained scores of 19, 29, -6, 17, and -5, respectively. From the cost-benefit analysis, it has been proposed that for the PWCS of low-rise residential areas, three wheelie bins of different colors will be provided to each housing unit. The total costs per tonne of solid waste for the PWCS, SAUWCS, TCPS, and traditional system are 2,832.1952, 3,638.137205, 3,888.6272, 751.45984, and 1,975.8152, respectively. For the PWCS of residential areas, chute waste collection systems are planned for high-rise apartment buildings and SAUWCSs are planned in commercial areas.
