Integrating Data and Model Optimization for Improved Multi-Class Land Cover Classification Using Multispectral Remote Sensing Data

Abstract. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, significant progress has been made in land cover classification using deep learning methods. However, in existing research, most studies focus more on improving classification accuracy by optimizing the model structure and less on mining the value of the data itself. In this paper, experiments on remote sensing multi-class land cover classification were conducted based on Worldview3 data, and strategies to improve classification accuracy were proposed in terms of sampling methods, band combination, loss function, and model optimization. Experiment results show that the proposed improvement strategies are effective for multi-class land cover classification, with recall, F1, and IoU improved by 29%, 17%, and 19%, respectively. The significant improvement in classification accuracy for less-represented targets confirms that enhancing data richness and balance leads to greater improvement than just optimizing the model.

Multispectral Remote Sensing Data Application in Modelling Non-Extensive Tsallis Thermodynamics for Mountain Forests in Northern Mongolia.

The imminent threat of Mongolian montane forests facing extinction due to climate change emphasizes the pressing need to study these ecosystems for sustainable development. Leveraging multispectral remote sensing data from Landsat 8 OLI TIRS (2013-2021), we apply Tsallis non-extensive thermodynamics to assess spatiotemporal fluctuations in the absorbed solar energy budget (exergy, bound energy, internal energy increment) and organizational parameters (entropy, information increment, q-index) within the mountain taiga-meadow landscape. Using the principal component method, we discern three functional subsystems: evapotranspiration, heat dissipation, and a structural-informational component linked to bioproductivity. The interplay among these subsystems delineates distinct landscape cover states. By categorizing ecosystems (pixels) based on these processes, discrete states and transitional areas (boundaries and potential disturbances) emerge. Examining the temporal dynamics of ecosystems (pixels) within this three-dimensional coordinate space facilitates predictions of future landscape states. Our findings indicate that northern Mongolian montane forests utilize a smaller proportion of received energy for productivity compared to alpine meadows, which results in their heightened vulnerability to climate change. This approach deepens our understanding of ecosystem functioning and landscape dynamics, serving as a basis for evaluating their resilience amid ongoing climate challenges.

Multiscale Inversion of Leaf Area Index in Citrus Tree by Merging UAV LiDAR with Multispectral Remote Sensing Data

The LAI (leaf area index) is an important parameter describing the canopy structure of citrus trees and characterizing plant photosynthesis, as well as providing an important basis for selecting parameters for orchard plant protection operations. By fusing LiDAR data with multispectral data, it can make up for the lack of rich spatial features of multispectral data, thus obtaining higher LAI inversion accuracy. This study proposed a multiscale LAI inversion method for citrus orchard based on the fusion of point cloud data and multispectral data. By comparing various machine learning algorithms, the mapping relationship between the characteristic parameters in multispectral data and point cloud data and citrus LAI was established, and we established the inversion model based on this, by removing redundant features through redundancy analysis. The experiment results showed that the BP neural network performs the best at both the community scale and the individual scale. After removing redundant features, the R2, RMSE, and MAE of the BP neural network at the community scale and individual scale were 0.896, 0.112, 0.086, and 0.794, 0.408, 0.328, respectively. By adding the three-dimensional gap fraction feature to the two-dimensional vegetation index features, the R2 at community scale and individual scale increased by 4.43% and 7.29%, respectively. The conclusion of this study suggests that the fusion of point cloud and multispectral data exhibits superior accuracy in multiscale citrus LAI inversion compared to relying solely on a single data source. This study proposes a fast and efficient multiscale LAI inversion method for citrus, which provides a new idea for the orchard precise management and the precision of plant protection operation.

Comparison of Machine Learning Methods for Estimating Leaf Area Index and Aboveground Biomass of Cinnamomum camphora Based on UAV Multispectral Remote Sensing Data

UAV multispectral technology is used to obtain leaf area index (LAI) and aboveground biomass (AGB) information on Cinnamomum camphora (C. camphora) and to diagnose the growth condition of Cinnamomum camphora dwarf forests in a timely and rapid manner, which helps improve the precision management of Cinnamomum camphora dwarf forests. Multispectral remote sensing images provide large-area plant spectral information, which can provide a detailed quantitative assessment of LAI, AGB and other plant physicochemical parameters. They are very effective tools for assessing and analyzing plant health. In this study, the Cinnamomum camphora dwarf forest in the red soil area of south China is taken as the research object. Remote sensing images of Cinnamomum camphora dwarf forest canopy are obtained by the multispectral camera of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), random forest (RF), radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) and support vector regression (SVR) algorithms are used to study the correlation and estimation accuracy between the original band reflectance, spectral indices and LAI and AGB of Cinnamomum camphora. The results of this study showed the following: (1) The accuracy of model estimation based on RF is significantly different for different model inputs, while the other four models have small differences. (2) The accuracy of the XGBoost-based LAI model was the highest; with original band reflectance as the model input, the R2 of the model test set was 0.862, and the RMSE was 0.390. (3) The accuracy of the XGBoost-based AGB model was the highest; with spectral indices as the model input, the R2 of the model test set was 0.929, and the RMSE was 587.746 kg·hm−2. (4) The XGBoost model was the best model for the LAI and AGB estimation of Cinnamomum camphora, which was followed by GBDT, RF, RFNN, and SVR. This research result can provide a theoretical basis for monitoring a Cinnamomum camphora dwarf forest based on UAV multispectral technology and a reference for rapidly estimating Cinnamomum camphora growth parameters.

Application of hyperspectral and multispectral datasets for mineral mapping

In this study, hyperspectral datasets are simulated from multispectral data using a spectral reconstruction approach which is a sensor-independent technique. This technique makes use of information from atmospherically corrected multispectral Remote Sensing (MRS) data and normalized ground spectra for the simulation of HRS data. In this study EO-1, the ALI dataset was used for the simulation of hyperspectral Remote Sensing (HRS) data to discover the Udaipur region’s unique minerals. A total of 61 spectral bands with 10 nm bandwidth were simulated. The simulated HRS data were validated using visual interpretation, statistical and classification approaches. Simulated HRS data from EO-1 Advanced Land Imager (ALI) has shown a high correlation with EO-1 Hyperion data. Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) classification was also performed on simulated hyperspectral data for mineral mapping. It was observed that simulated hyperspectral data have shown comparable results with Hyperion and are better than their corresponding multispectral datasets.

Fusion of Multispectral Remote-Sensing Data through GIS-Based Overlay Method for Revealing Potential Areas of Hydrothermal Mineral Resources

Revealing prospective locations of hydrothermal alteration zones (HAZs) is an important technique for mineral prospecting. In this study, we used multiple criteria inferred from Landsat-8 OLI, Sentinel-2, and ASTER data using a GIS-based weighted overlay multi-criteria decision analysis approach to build a model for the delineating of hydrothermal mineral deposits in the Khnaiguiyah district, Saudi Arabia. The utilized algorithms revealed argillic, phyllic, and propylitic alteration characteristics. The HAZs map resulted in the identification of six zones based on their mineralization potential, providing a basis for potential hydrothermal mineral deposit assessment exploration, which was created by the fusion of mineral bands indicators designated very low, low, moderate, good, very good, and excellent and covers 31.36, 28.22, 20.49, 10.99, 6.35, and 2.59%. Based on their potential for hydrothermal mineral potentiality, the discovered zones match gossans related to sulfide mineral alteration zones, as demonstrated by previous studies.

Lithological Mapping of Kohat Basin in Pakistan Using Multispectral Remote Sensing Data: A Comparison of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN)

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based multispectral remote sensing has been the best supporting tool using limited resources to enhance the lithological mapping abilities with accuracy, supported by ground truthing through traditional mapping techniques. The availability of the dataset, choice of algorithm, cost, accuracy, computational time, data labeling, and terrain features are some crucial considerations that researchers continue to explore. In this research, support vector machine (SVM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were applied to the Sentinel-2 MSI dataset for classifying lithologies having subtle compositional differences in the Kohat Basin’s remote, inaccessible regions within Pakistan. First, we used principal component analysis (PCA), minimum noise fraction (MNF), and available maps for reliable data annotation for training SVM and (ANN) models for mapping ten classes (nine lithological units + water). The ANN and SVM results were compared with the previously conducted studies in the area and ground truth survey to evaluate their accuracy. SVM mapped ten classes with an overall accuracy (OA) of 95.78% and kappa coefficient of 0.95, compared to 95.73% and 0.95 by ANN classification. The SVM algorithm was more efficient concerning computational efficiency, accuracy, and ease due to available features within Google Earth Engine (GEE). Contrarily, ANN required time-consuming data transformation from GEE to Google Cloud before application in Google Colab.

Monitoring Marine Oil Spills in Hyperspectral and Multispectral Remote Sensing Data by the Spectral Gene Extraction (SGE) Method

Oil spill incidents threaten the marine ecological environment. Detecting sea surface oil slicks by remote sensing images provides support for the efficient treatment of oil spills. This is important for sustainable marine development. However, traditional methods based on field analysis are time-consuming. Spectral indices lack applicability. In addition, traditional machine learning methods strictly rely on training and testing samples which are in short supply in oil spill images. Inspired by the spectral DNA encoding method, a spectral gene extraction (SGE) method was proposed to detect oil spills in hyperspectral images (HSI) and multispectral images (MSI). The SGE method contained a parameter and two strategies. The parameter of elimination was designed based on the population genetic frequency. It was used to control the number of spectral genes. The spectral gene extraction strategies, named largest in-class similarity (LIS) strategy and largest inter-class difference (LID) strategy, were proposed to mine the spectral genes by oil spill samples. The oil spills would be determined by calculating the similarity of the extracted spectral genes to the DNA encoded images. In this research, the SGE method was validated by two AVIRIS images of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, one MODIS image of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and one Landsat 8 image of a Persian Gulf oil spill. The oil spills in different remote sensing images could be detected accurately by the proposed method in a small set of samples. Experimental results indicated that the proposed method was suitable for detecting marine oil spills in AVIRIS, MODIS, and Landsat 8 images. In addition, the SGE method with the LIS strategy was more suitable for detecting oil spills in HSI. Its proper elimination rates were 0.8~1.0. The SGE method with the LID strategy was more suitable for detecting oil spills in MSI. Its proper elimination rates were 0.5~0.7.

Multispectral Remote Sensing Data Analysis Based on KNNLC Algorithm and Multimedia Image

In order to combine multimedia imagery and multispectral remote sensing data to analyze information, preprocessing becomes a necessary part of it. It is found that the KNN algorithm is one of the classic algorithms of data mining. As one of the most important branches in the field of data analysis, it is widely used in many fields such as classification, regression, missing value filling, and machine learning. As a lazy algorithm, this method requires no prior statistical knowledge and no additional data to train description rules and is easy to implement. However, the algorithm inevitably has many problems, such as how to determine the appropriate K value, the unsatisfactory effect of data processing for some special distributions, and the unacceptable computational complexity of high-dimensional data. In order to solve these shortcomings, the researchers proposed the KNNLC algorithm. Then, taking the classification experiment as an example, through the comparison of the experimental results on different data sets, it is proved that the average level of the classification performance of the KNNLC algorithm is better than the classic KNN classification algorithm. The KNNLC algorithm shows better performance in most cases, with an accuracy rate of 2 to 5 percentage points higher. An improved algorithm is proposed for the nearest neighbor selection strategy of the traditional KNN algorithm. First, in theory, combined with the theory of sparse coding and locally constrained linear coding, the classical KNN algorithm is improved, and the KNNLC algorithm is proposed. The comparison of the experimental results on the data set proves that the average level of the KNNLC algorithm is better than the classical KNN classification algorithm in terms of classification performance.

Remote Sensing-Based Agricultural Water Accounting for the North Jordan Valley

Remote sensing can provide important and updated information for agricultural water accounting (AWA). In this study, data from the open-access portal (WaPOR) of the Food and Agricultural Organization was used in AWA to assess levels of agricultural water consumption and to provide possible solutions for water deficiency in the North Jordan Valley (NJV). Consolidated procedures have been applied to complement and validate the WaPOR products. These included the use of climatic and ground data, the multispectral remote-sensing data of Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 to derive land use/cover maps, GIS layers, and calibrated evapotranspiration (ET) estimates using the surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL). The data of water inflows and outflows were analyzed using the water accounting plus (WA+) system. Results showed that the WaPOR data of actual ET and interception (AETI) were highly correlated with SEBAL-ET, with WaPOR data overestimating ET for irrigated areas. Precipitation data from WaPOR, on the other hand, were underestimating inflow from rainfall, although significant correlations were observed between these data and rainfall records. As a result, the quality of WaPOR data affected the outputs from agricultural water accounting. The main impact on water accounting outputs was the underestimation of percolated water that could be utilized as a possible solution to water deficiency in the NJV. In addition, the water accounting performance indicators were relatively affected, although they reflected the nature of the study area where water deficiency predominated as a result of inter-basin transfer. The study compared outputs from water accounting in terms of the possible solutions to water deficiency in the NJV and concluded that considerable amounts of recoverable water could be developed when compared with the option of developing surface water from the side wadis. Also, it emphasized the important role of remote-sensing sources for providing information for AWA needed for improved water management and governance.

A Comparative Study of Convolutional Neural Networks and Conventional Machine Learning Models for Lithological Mapping Using Remote Sensing Data

Lithological mapping is a critical aspect of geological mapping that can be useful in studying the mineralization potential of a region and has implications for mineral prospectivity mapping. This is a challenging task if performed manually, particularly in highly remote areas that require a large number of participants and resources. The combination of machine learning (ML) methods and remote sensing data can provide a quick, low-cost, and accurate approach for mapping lithological units. This study used deep learning via convolutional neural networks and conventional ML methods involving support vector machines and multilayer perceptron to map lithological units of a mineral-rich area in the southeast of Iran. Moreover, we used and compared the efficiency of three different types of multispectral remote-sensing data, including Landsat 8 operational land imager (OLI), advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (ASTER), and Sentinel-2. The results show that CNNs and conventional ML methods effectively use the respective remote-sensing data in generating an accurate lithological map of the study area. However, the combination of CNNs and ASTER data provides the best performance and the highest accuracy and adaptability with field observations and laboratory analysis results so that almost all the test data are predicted correctly. The framework proposed in this study can be helpful for exploration geologists to create accurate lithological maps in other regions by using various remote-sensing data at a low cost.

Supervised Machine Learning Approaches on Multispectral Remote Sensing Data for a Combined Detection of Fire and Burned Area

Bushfires pose a severe risk, among others, to humans, wildlife, and infrastructures. Rapid detection of fires is crucial for fire-extinguishing activities and rescue missions. Besides, mapping burned areas also supports evacuation and accessibility to emergency facilities. In this study, we propose a generic approach for detecting fires and burned areas based on machine learning (ML) approaches and remote sensing data. While most studies investigated either the detection of fires or mapping burned areas, we addressed and evaluated, in particular, the combined detection on three selected case study regions. Multispectral Sentinel-2 images represent the input data for the supervised ML models. First, we generated the reference data for the three target classes, burned, unburned, and fire, since no reference data were available. Second, the three regional fire datasets were preprocessed and divided into training, validation, and test subsets according to a defined schema. Furthermore, an undersampling approach ensured the balancing of the datasets. Third, seven selected supervised classification approaches were used and evaluated, including tree-based models, a self-organizing map, an artificial neural network, and a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN). All selected ML approaches achieved satisfying classification results. Moreover, they performed a highly accurate fire detection, while separating burned and unburned areas was slightly more challenging. The 1D-CNN and extremely randomized tree were the best-performing models with an overall accuracy score of 98% on the test subsets. Even on an unknown test dataset, the 1D-CNN achieved high classification accuracies. This generalization is even more valuable for any use-case scenario, including the organization of fire-fighting activities or civil protection. The proposed combined detection could be extended and enhanced with crowdsourced data in further studies.

A Multicenter Soft Supervised Classification Method for Modeling Spectral Diversity in Multispectral Remote Sensing Data

Due to the spectral diversity of objects within the same classes and the spectral similarity between different classes, classical fuzzy classification methods perform poorly in multispectral remote sensing image classification. The basic reason is that they often use a single spectral curve to represent a land cover type while ignoring spectral diversity characteristics. To solve this issue, this article proposes a novel multicenter supervised fuzzy classification (MCSFC) method for modeling spectral diversity in multispectral remote sensing data. Images are first split into clusters with similar sizes or volumes, namely, granularities, by a hierarchical clustering process. Second, the granularities are labeled by training samples. As a result, the centers of the granularities corresponding to one type of sample can represent the spectral diversity within one class and, thus, are treated as the multiple centers of a land cover type. The membership degree of each unlabeled sample belonging to any land cover type is determined by the shortest distance to the centers of each type, and the spectral diversity is considered in this stage. A comparison reveals that the proposed method clearly improves the classification performance of various single-center fuzzy semisupervised clustering (FSSC) methods. Two case studies indicate that the granularity volume parameter notably affects the classification performance, and the overall accuracy (OA) decreases with increasing granularity volume.

Monitoring Cyanobacteria Bloom in Dianchi Lake Based on Ground-Based Multispectral Remote-Sensing Imaging: Preliminary Results

Some lakes in China have undergone serious eutrophication, with cyanobacterial blooms occurring frequently. Dynamic monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms is important. At present, the traditional lake-survey-based cyanobacterial bloom monitoring is spatiotemporally limited and requires considerable human and material resources. Although satellite remote sensing can rapidly monitor large-scale cyanobacterial blooms, clouds and other factors often mean that effective images cannot be obtained. It is also difficult to use this method to dynamically monitor and manage aquatic environments and provide early warnings of cyanobacterial blooms in lakes and reservoirs. In contrast, ground-based remote sensing can operate under cloud cover and thus act as a new technical method to dynamically monitor cyanobacterial blooms. In this study, ground-based remote-sensing technology was applied to multitemporal, multidirectional, and multiscene monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms in Dianchi Lake via an area array multispectral camera mounted on a rotatable cloud platform at a fixed station. Results indicate that ground-based imaging remote sensing can accurately reflect the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of cyanobacterial blooms and provide timely and accurate data for salvage treatment and early warnings. Thus, ground-based multispectral remote-sensing data can operationalize the dynamic monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms. The methods and results from this study can provide references for monitoring such blooms in other lakes.

Image super-resolution with dense-sampling residual channel-spatial attention networks for multi-temporal remote sensing image classification

Image super-resolution (SR) techniques can benefit a wide range of applications in the remote sensing (RS) community, including image classification. This issue is particularly relevant for image classification on time series data, considering RS datasets that feature long temporal coverage generally have a limited spatial resolution. Recent advances in deep learning brought new opportunities for enhancing the spatial resolution of historic RS data. Numerous convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods showed superior performance in terms of developing efficient end-to-end SR models for natural images. However, such models were rarely exploited for promoting image classification based on multispectral RS data. This paper proposes a novel CNN-based framework to enhance the spatial resolution of time series multispectral RS images. Thereby, the proposed SR model employs Residual Channel Attention Networks (RCAN) as a backbone structure, whereas based on this structure the proposed models uniquely integrate tailored channel-spatial attention and dense-sampling mechanisms for performance improvement. Subsequently, state-of-the-art CNN-based classifiers are incorporated to produce classification maps based on the enhanced time series data. The experiments proved that the proposed SR model can enable unambiguously better performance compared to RCAN and other (deep learning-based) SR techniques, especially in a domain adaptation context, i.e., leveraging Sentinel-2 images for generating SR Landsat images. Furthermore, the experimental results confirmed that the enhanced multi-temporal RS images can bring substantial improvement on fine-grained multi-temporal land use classification.

Gradient Boosting Estimation of the Leaf Area Index of Apple Orchards in UAV Remote Sensing

The leaf area index (LAI) is a key parameter for describing the canopy structure of apple trees. This index is also employed in evaluating the amount of pesticide sprayed per unit volume of apple trees. Hence, numerous manual and automatic methods have been explored for LAI estimation. In this work, the leaf area indices for different types of apple trees are obtained in terms of multispectral remote-sensing data collected with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), along with simultaneous measurements of apple orchards. The proposed approach was tested on apple trees of the “Fuji”, “Golden Delicious”, and “Ruixue” types, which were planted in the Apple Experimental Station of the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University in Baishui County, Shaanxi Province, China. Five vegetation indices of strong correlation with the apple leaf area index were selected and used to train models of support vector regression (SVR) and gradient-boosting decision trees (GBDT) for predicting the leaf area index of apple trees. The best model was selected based on the metrics of the coefficient of determination (R2) and the root-mean-square error (RMSE). The experimental results showed that the gradient-boosting decision tree model achieved the best performance with an R2 of 0.846, an RMSE of 0.356, and a spatial efficiency (SPAEF) of 0.57. This demonstrates the feasibility of our approach for fast and accurate remote-sensing-based estimation of the leaf area index of apple trees.

Machine-Learning Classification of Soil Bulk Density in Salt Marsh Environments.

Remotely sensed data from both in situ and satellite platforms in visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared (VNIR–SWIR, 400–2500 nm) regions have been widely used to characterize and model soil properties in a direct, cost-effective, and rapid manner at different scales. In this study, we assess the performance of machine-learning algorithms including random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting machines (XGBoost), and support vector machines (SVM) to model salt marsh soil bulk density using multispectral remote-sensing data from the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) platform. To our knowledge, use of remote-sensing data for estimating salt marsh soil bulk density at the vegetation rooting zone has not been investigated before. Our study reveals that blue (band 1; 450–520 nm) and NIR (band 4; 770–900 nm) bands of Landsat-7 ETM+ ranked as the most important spectral features for bulk density prediction by XGBoost and RF, respectively. According to XGBoost, band 1 and band 4 had relative importance of around 41% and 39%, respectively. We tested two soil bulk density classes in order to differentiate salt marshes in terms of their capability to support vegetation that grows in either low (0.032 to 0.752 g/cm3) or high (0.752 g/cm3 to 1.893 g/cm3) bulk density areas. XGBoost produced a higher classification accuracy (88%) compared to RF (87%) and SVM (86%), although discrepancies in accuracy between these models were small (<2%). XGBoost correctly classified 178 out of 186 soil samples labeled as low bulk density and 37 out of 62 soil samples labeled as high bulk density. We conclude that remote-sensing-based machine-learning models can be a valuable tool for ecologists and engineers to map the soil bulk density in wetlands to select suitable sites for effective restoration and successful re-establishment practices.

Mineral Mapping in Zonouz Region Using Multi-Spectral Remote Sensing Data to Identify the Kaolin Extension

AbstractExploration of the new mineral deposits around the existing mines is an important objective in mining industry. Using multispectral remote sensing images, due to their diversity and vast availability is a useful tool to meet this purpose. In this research, the Zonouz region was investigated for discovering new high potential kaolinite mineralization areas using Landsat8 and ASTER data. Zonouz kaolin mine which is located in Marand county, East-Azarbaijan, is the biggest kaolin deposit in the Middle-East. In the current research, the capability of Landsat8, as a new generation multispectral data, and ASTER data were examined in mineral detection. At first, the preprocessing of data, i.e. atmospheric and topographic corrections and elimination of the vegetation cover were carried out. Then, the spectral profiles of the endmembers of the study area datasets were extracted. Identification of the extracted endmembers was done by comparison of the unknown spectra with reference spectra of the USGS spectral library, and 3 minerals including kaolinite, quartz, and Fe-bearing minerals were identified. Finally, the distribution maps of the identified minerals were extracted by using of the artificial neural networks, as a non-linear supervised method. To the best of our knowledge, the applied neural networks structure has not been implemented on LANDSAT 8 and ASTER data earlier. This research is also the first implementation of LANDSAT 8 and ASTER data in Zonouz kaolin region for extension mapping of the kaolin. Two different approaches including virtual verification and field sampling were applied for validation of the results. According to the Findings of this research, both of ASTER and Landsat8 datasets proved successfulness for identifying the kaolinite; but the Landsat 8 data exhibited better performance in detecting and mapping of the quartz and hematite. Remote characterization of photosynthetic communities in the Fryxell basin of Taylor Valley, Antarctica

AbstractWe investigate the spatial distribution, spectral properties and temporal variability of primary producers (e.g. communities of microbial mats and mosses) throughout the Fryxell basin of Taylor Valley, Antarctica, using high-resolution multispectral remote-sensing data. Our results suggest that photosynthetic communities can be readily detected throughout the Fryxell basin based on their unique near-infrared spectral signatures. Observed intra- and inter-annual variability in spectral signatures are consistent with short-term variations in mat distribution, hydration and photosynthetic activity. Spectral unmixing is also implemented in order to estimate mat abundance, with the most densely vegetated regions observed from orbit correlating spatially with some of the most productive regions of the Fryxell basin. Our work establishes remote sensing as a valuable tool in the study of these ecological communities in the McMurdo Dry Valleys and demonstrates how future scientific investigations and the management of specially protected areas could benefit from these tools and techniques.

Multispectral Remote Sensing Data Are Effective and Robust in Mapping Regional Forest Soil Organic Carbon Stocks in a Northeast Forest Region in China

Accurately mapping the spatial distribution information of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is a key premise for soil resource management and environment protection. Rapid development of satellite remote sensing provides a great opportunity for monitoring SOC stocks at a large scale. In this study, based on 12 environmental variables of multispectral remote sensing, topography and climate and 236 soil sampling data, three different boosted regression tree (BRT) models were compared to obtain the most accurate map of SOC stocks covering the forest area of Lvshun District in the Northeast China. Four validation indexes, including mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R2), and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (LCCC) were calculated to evaluate the performance of the three models. The results showed that the full variable model performed the best, except the model using multispectral remote sensing variables. In the full variable model, the regional SOC stocks are primarily determined by multispectral remote sensing variables, followed by topographic and climatic variables, with the relative importance of variables in the model being 63%, 28%, and 9%, respectively. The average prediction results of full variables model and only multispectral remote sensing variables model were 8.99 and 9.32 kg m−2, respectively. Our results indicated that there is a strong dependence of SOC stocks on multispectral remote sensing data when forest ecosystems have dense natural vegetation. Our study suggests that the multispectral remote sensing variables should be used to map SOC stocks of forest ecosystems in our study region.
