The Return of the Warrior: Combining Anthropology, Imaging Advances, and Art in Reconstructing the Face of the Early Medieval Skeleton

Reconstructing the face from the skull is important not only for forensic identification but also as a tool that can provide insight into the appearance of individuals from past populations. It requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines anthropological knowledge, advanced imaging methods, and artistic skills. In the present study, we demonstrate this process on the skull of an early medieval warrior from Croatia. The skeletal remains were prepared and scanned using multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) and examined using standard anthropological and radiological methods. The analysis revealed that the remains belonged to a 35–45-year-old male individual who had suffered severe cranial trauma, probably causing his death. From MSCT images, we reconstructed a three-dimensional (3D) model of the skull, on which we digitally positioned cylinders demarking the soft tissue thickness and created the face with a realistic texture. A 3D model of the face was then optimized, printed, and used to produce a clay model. Sculpturing techniques added skin textures and facial features with scars and trauma manifestations. Finally, after constructing a plaster model, the model was painted and refined by adding fine details like eyes and hair, and it was prepared for presentation in the form of a sculpture.

Differentiation of radicular cysts and radicular granulomas via texture analysis of multi-slice computed tomography images.

This study aimed to establish a method for differentiating radicular cysts from granulomas via texture analysis (TA) of multi-slice computed tomography (CT) images. A total of 222 lesions with multi-slice computed tomography images acquired at our hospital between 2013 and 2022 that were pathologically diagnosed were included in this study. Cases of contrast-enhanced images, severe metallic artifacts, and lesions that were not sufficiently large to be analyzed were excluded. The images were chronologically divided into a training group and a validation group. The radiological characteristics were determined. Subsequently, a TA was performed. Pyradiomics software was used for the TA of three-dimensionally segmented volumes extracted from 2-mm slice thickness images with a soft-tissue algorithm. Features that differed significantly between the two lesions in the training group were extracted and used to create machine-learning models. The discriminative ability of these models was evaluated in the validation group using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. A total of 131 lesions, comprising 28 radicular cysts and 103 granulomas, were analyzed. Forty-three texture features that exhibited significant variations were extracted. A support vector machine and decision tree model, with areas under the curves of 0.829 and 0.803, respectively, were created. These models showed high discriminative abilities, even for the validation group, with areas under the curve of 0.727 and 0.701, respectively. Both models showed superior performance compared with that of the models based on radiographic findings. Discriminatory models were established for the TA of radicular cysts and granulomas using CT images.

Left Atrium Volume Measured with Multislice Computed Tomography as a Prognostic Predictor for Atrial Fibrillation Catheter Ablation Outcomes.

Background: Current guidelines consider atrial fibrillation (AF) type as the prognostic factor for a recommendation of catheter ablation. We aimed to determine whether LA and LA appendage (LAA) volumes measured using multislice computed tomography (MSCT) were related to long-term outcomes in AF following radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA). Methods: We evaluated 152 consecutive patients with drug-refractory AF (median age, 55.8 ± 9.6 years), including 110 male patients, who underwent RFCA in a single center. All patients underwent MSCT imaging for anatomical assessment. The endpoint of this study was documented AF recurrence after RFCA. Results: The overall procedure success rate was 77.6% (n = 118) during a mean follow-up period of 12.6 months. The LA volume was significantly larger for those who experienced AF recurrence after RFCA than for the patients without recurrent AF after the procedure (153.8 ± 29.9 mL vs. 139.2 ± 34.1 mL, p = 0.025). However, LAA volumes were nearly equivalent between the patients with and without AF recurrence after RFCA (16.2 ± 6.3 mL and 14.7 ± 6.5 mL, respectively; p = 0.235). LA volume ≥ 153.2 mL was the optimal cutoff value for estimating AF recurrence after RFCA, with 94% sensitivity and 66% specificity. LA volume remained an independent predictor of both AF recurrence and permanent AF. Conclusions: LA volume as assessed by MSCT might be helpful for identifying patients likely to achieve successful AF ablation. LA volume ≥ 153.2 mL, but not LAA volume, showed good accuracy in predicting AF recurrence after RFCA.

A radiomics nomogram based on MSCT and clinical factors can stratify fibrosis in inflammatory bowel disease

Intestinal fibrosis is one of the major complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and a pathological process that significantly impacts patient prognosis and treatment selection. Although current imaging assessment and clinical markers are widely used for the diagnosis and stratification of fibrosis, these methods suffer from subjectivity and limitations. In this study, we aim to develop a radiomics diagnostic model based on multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) and clinical factors. MSCT images and relevant clinical data were collected from 218 IBD patients, and a large number of quantitative image features were extracted. Using these features, we constructed a radiomics model and transformed it into a user-friendly diagnostic nomogram. A nomogram was developed to predict fibrosis in IBD by integrating multiple factors. The nomogram exhibited favorable discriminative ability, with an AUC of 0.865 in the validation sets, surpassing both the logistic regression (LR) model (AUC = 0.821) and the clinical model (AUC = 0.602) in the test set. In the train set, the LR model achieved an AUC of 0.975, while the clinical model had an AUC of 0.735. The nomogram demonstrated superior performance with an AUC of 0.971, suggesting its potential as a valuable tool for predicting fibrosis in IBD and improving clinical decision-making. The radiomics nomogram, incorporating MSCT and clinical factors, demonstrates promise in stratifying fibrosis in IBD. The nomogram outperforms traditional clinical models and offers personalized risk assessment. However, further validation and addressing identified limitations are necessary to enhance its applicability.

Risk factor analysis for major mediastinal vessel invasion in thymic epithelial tumors based on multi-slice CT Imaging.

To explore the characteristics and risk factors for major mediastinal vessel invasion in different risk grades of thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) based on computed tomography (CT) imaging, and to develop prediction models of major mediastinal artery and vein invasion. One hundred and twenty-two TET patients confirmed by histopathological analysis who underwent thorax CT were enrolled in this study. Clinical and CT data were retrospectively reviewed for these patients. According to the abutment degree between the tumor and major mediastinal vessels, the arterial invasion was divided into grade I, II, and III (< 25%, 25 - 49%, and ≥ 50%, respectively); the venous invasion was divided into grade I and II (< 50% and ≥ 50%). The degree of vessel invasion was compared among different defined subtypes or stages of TETs using the chi-square tests. The risk factors associated with TET vascular invasion were identified using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Based on logistic regression analysis, male patients (β = 1.549; odds ratio, 4.824) and the pericardium or pleural invasion (β = 2.209; odds ratio, 9.110) were independent predictors of 25% artery invasion, and the midline location (β = 2.504; odds ratio, 12.234) and mediastinal lymphadenopathy (β = 2.490; odds ratio, 12.06) were independent predictors of 50% artery invasion. As for 50% venous invasion, the risk factors include midline location (β = 2.303; odds ratio, 10.0), maximum tumor diameter larger than 5.9 cm (β = 4.038; odds ratio, 56.736), and pericardial or pleural effusion (β = 1.460; odds ratio, 4.306). The multivariate logistic model obtained relatively high predicting efficacy, and the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity were 0.944, 84.6%, and 91.7% for predicting 50% artery invasion, and 0.913, 81.8%, and 86.0% for 50% venous invasion in TET patients, respectively. Several CT features can be used as independent predictors of ≥50% artery or venous invasion. A multivariate logistic regression model based on CT features is helpful in predicting the vascular invasion grades in patients with TET.

Left atrial appendage sizing for percutaneous closure in virtual reality-a feasibility study.

The complex and highly variable three-dimensional anatomy of the left atrial appendage (LAA) makes planning and device sizing for interventional occlusion procedures (LAAC) challenging. Several imaging modalities [e.g. echocardiography, multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT)] are used for this purpose. Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging imaging technique to immerse into a three-dimensional left atrium and appendage, offering unprecedented options of visualization and measurement. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, accuracy and reproducibility of visualizing the LAA in VR for preprocedural planning of LAAC. Twenty-one patients (79 ± 7 years, 62% male) who underwent LAAC at University Hospital Düsseldorf were included in our study. A dedicated software generated three-dimensional VR models from preprocedural MSCT imaging data. Conventional measurements of LAA dimensions (ostium, landing zone and depth) using a commercially available software were compared to measurements in VR: MSCT and VR ostium min. (r = 0.93), max. (r = 0.80) and mean (r = 0.88, all p < 0.001) diameters as well as landing zone (LZ) min. (r = 0.84), max. (r = 0.86) and mean diameters (r = 0.90, all p < 0.001) showed strong correlations. Three-dimensional orientation was judged superior by physicians in VR compared to MSCT (p < 0.05). Virtual reality visualization of the left atrium and appendage based on MSCT data is feasible and allows precise and reproducible measurements in planning of LAA occlusion procedures with enhanced 3D orientation. Further studies need to explore additional benefits of three-dimensional visualization for operators in preprocedural planning.

Phleboliths, not Sialoliths: A Report of Submandibular Gland Arteriovenous Malformation with Numerous Calcifications: Analysis of Cine Images and Literature Review for the 54 Years

Here, we provide a case report of a 28-year-old woman diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the submandibular gland (SMG). A 14 phleboliths were the visualized on the multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) within the AVM and two calcifications were located 7-mm distant from AVM margins. Such AVMs and venous malformations are so-called in the literature as tumor-like vascular formations or “hemangiomas.” Ultrasonography (USG) and non-/post-contrast MSCT, which helped to make a correct pre-operative diagnosis, are presented. In total, in this report the 129 MSCT images are cinematically demonstrated. Also, the present case is enhanced by the pre-/intraoperative images, photographs of the specimen, removed phleboliths, and multiple histopathological images. Based on the literature review for the last 54 years and present case, the 19 cases with SMG malformations/hemangiomas were reported in 18 patients which were published in 15 articles. In one patient, a bilateral SMG venous malformation was reported. At the same time, our case report is a first case study of the SMG AVM with phleboliths that highlights this rare pathology in three videos (as cine loops). Advantages of integration of the cine images into case studies are analyzed. Also, the “submandibular gland-arteriovenous malformation conglomerate” was proposed by our team as a term for description of similar cases.

Numerical Method for Geometrical Feature Extraction and Identification of Patient-Specific Aorta Models in Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease

An algorithm providing information on the key geometric features of an aorta extracted from multi-slice computed tomography images is proposed. Using the numerical method, the aorta’s geometric characteristics, such as vessel cross-sectional areas and diameters, as well as distances between arteries, can be determined. This step is crucial for training the meta-model necessary to construct an expert system with a significantly reduced volume of data and for identifying key relationships between diagnoses and geometric and hydrodynamic features. This methodology is expected to be part of an innovative decision-making software product for clinical implementation. Based on clinical and anamnestic data as well as calculations, the software will provide the shunt parameters (in particular, its diameter) and installation position to ensure regular blood flow.

Strategy to implement a convolutional neural network based ideal model observer via transfer learning for multi-slice simulated breast CT images

Objective. In this work, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based multi-slice ideal model observer using transfer learning (TL-CNN) to reduce the required number of training samples. Approach. To train model observers, we generate simulated breast CT image volumes that are reconstructed using the FeldkampDavisKress algorithm with a ramp and Hanning-weighted ramp filter. The observer performance is evaluated on the background-known-statistically (BKS)/signal-known-exactly task with a spherical signal, and the BKS/signal-known-statistically task with random signal generated by the stochastic grown method. We compare the detectability of the CNN-based model observer with that of conventional linear model observers for multi-slice images (i.e. a multi-slice channelized Hotelling observer (CHO) and volumetric CHO). We also analyze the detectability of the TL-CNN for different numbers of training samples to examine its performance robustness to a limited number of training samples. To further analyze the effectiveness of transfer learning, we calculate the correlation coefficients of filter weights in the CNN-based multi-slice model observer. Main results. When using transfer learning for the CNN-based multi-slice ideal model observer, the TL-CNN provides the same performance with a 91.7% reduction in the number of training samples compared to that when transfer learning is not used. Moreover, compared to the conventional linear model observer, the proposed CNN-based multi-slice model observers achieve 45% higher detectability in the signal-known-statistically detection tasks and 13% higher detectability in the SKE detection tasks. In correlation coefficient analysis, it is observed that the filters in most of the layers are highly correlated, demonstrating the effectiveness of the transfer learning for multi-slice model observer training. Significance. Deep learning-based model observers require large numbers of training samples, and the required number of training samples increases as the dimensions of the image (i.e. the number of slices) increase. With applying transfer learning, the required number of training samples is significantly reduced without performance drop.

Postoperative computed tomography imaging of pediatric patients with craniosynostosis: radiation dose and image quality comparison between multi-slice computed tomography and O-arm cone-beam computed tomography

BackgroundWhen postoperative multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) imaging of patients with craniosynostosis is used, it is usually performed a few days after surgery in a radiology department. This requires additional anesthesia for the patient. Recently, intraoperative mobile cone-beam CT (CBCT) devices have gained popularity for orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures, which allows postoperative CT imaging in the operating room.ObjectiveThis single-center retrospective study compared radiation dose and image quality of postoperative imaging performed using conventional MSCT scanners and O-arm CBCT.Materials and methodsA total of 104 pediatric syndromic and non-syndromic patients who were operated on because of single- or multiple-suture craniosynostosis were included in this study. The mean volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose-length product (DLP) values of optimized craniosynostosis CT examinations (58 MSCT and 46 CBCT) were compared. Two surgeons evaluated the subjective image quality.ResultsCBCT resulted in significantly lower CTDIvol (up to 14%) and DLP (up to 33%) compared to MSCT. Multi-slice CT image quality was considered superior to CBCT scans. However, all scans were considered to be of sufficient quality for diagnosis.ConclusionThe O-arm device allowed for an immediate postoperative CBCT examination in the operating theater using the same anesthesia induction. Radiation exposure was lower in CBCT compared to MSCT scans, thus further encouraging the use of O-arms. Cone-beam CT imaging with an O-arm is a feasible method for postoperative craniosynostosis imaging, yielding less anesthesia to patients, lower health costs and the possibility to immediately evaluate results of the surgical operation.

Relevant Risk Factor and Follow-Up of Lung Nodules in Physical Examination with Low-Dose CT Screening.

We aimed to explore the risk factors of lung nodules and lung cancer in physical examination population with low-dose multi-slice spiral CT (LDCT) screening, to provide basis for lung cancer screening and follow-up management after CT examination. The general data, serum tumor markers and CT images of 2,274 patients underwent LDCT in the Physical Examination Center of the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University, China in 2019 were retrospectively analyzed and followed up for three years. The detection rate of lung nodules was 48.42%. The detection rate of lung nodules was higher in females, those over 70, those with history of smoking, passive smoking, drinking, precious history of lung diseases and family history of malignant tumors, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). The abnormal rate of serum tumor markers (CA199, CA125 female and CYFRA211) were higher than that in the non-nodule group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that gender, age, history of smoking, passive smoking, family history of malignant tumors and serum tumor markers (CYFRA211 and CA199) were independent risk factors for the occurrence of lung nodules. Gender female, age>35, history of smoking, passive smoking, history of drinking, history of past lung disease, family history of malignant tumors, abnormal CYFRA211 tumor markers were detected and low dose multi-slice spiral CT image showed ground-glass nodules are risk factors for lung nodules and lung cancer, which should be paid close attention to during physical examination and follow-up.

The Use of Foramen Magnum in The Determination of Sex Using Computed Tomography (CT) Scan Images of Sampled Population Attending National Ear Care Centre Kaduna State, Nigeria

Determination of sex is an important element of human identification which becomes challenging when only only fragments of body parts are available for investigation by forensic experts. This study was aimed at assessing the utility of foramen magnum parameters in the determination of sex among the Nigerian population. A retrospective study was conducted on patients attending National Ear Care Center Kaduna between the years 2017-2019. A total of 399 normal Multislice CT images of skulls (236 males and 163 females) of the age of 18 – 95 years were randomly picked from the archives of the Hospital in the computer database of the Radiology Department. The foramen magnum and occipital condyles parameters were measured by an experienced radiologist. Males tend to have a significantly higher mean value of foramen magnum width, Foramen Magnum Index, the length of the right occipital condyle, and the length of left occipital condyles as well as the width of the right occipital condyle at a p-value ≤ 0.05. The width of right occipital condyles was the only variable that got a significant (p ≤ 0.05) impact on our sex estimation following multiple logistic regression. However, by applying discriminate function analysis the length of the left occipital condyle and width of the right occipital condyle were the only discriminatory variables chosen for this study population. In conclusion, this study indicated that five variables of foramen magnum out of ten were statistically significantly different with males having higher mean values than females. Moreover, the only significant discriminatory variables to determine sex in this study population were the length of the left occipital condyle and the width of the right occipital condyle respectively.

Preoperative diagnosis of perineural invasion in patients with periampullary carcinoma by MSCT imaging: preliminary observations and clinical implications.

The aim of this study was to investigate the value of multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) in preoperatively diagnosing perineural invasion (PNI) of periampullary carcinoma (PAC). Of 81 patients pathologically diagnosed as PAC, 73 patients were included. Their clinical documents and preoperative upper abdominal enhanced MSCT images were retrospectively reviewed to analyse clinical characteristics and MSCT features. MSCT features included tumor size, classification of fat tissue around celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery. Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test or Fisher's exact test were used to compare the differences between PNI group and Non-PNI group. ROC analysis was performed to evaluate diagnostic efficiency for PAC PNI. There were significant differences in some clinical characteristics and MSCT features. PAC PNI patients had significantly higher CA19-9 levels, higher CEA levels, larger tumor size and higher classification of fat tissue around celiac trunk than Non-PNI patients (All P values < 0.05). In univariate analysis, tumor size had the highest AUC as 0.806, fat tissue around celiac trunk and CEA had the highest specificity as 100% (P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, classification of fat tissue around celiac trunk incorporated with tumor size, CA19-9, CEA, age and sex, showed the highest AUC as 0.939, with specificity of 95.0% and sensitivity of 90.4% (P < 0.001). PAC PNI could be diagnosed preoperatively by evaluating abdominal enhanced MSCT images with high accuracy, combined with serum tumor marker could be more helpful.

Role of Multislice CT Imaging in Predicting the Visibility of the Round Window during Cochlear Implantation

Aim: To envisage the visibility of round window nichein pediatric cochlear implantation by using computed tomography. Study design: Retrospective study Place and duration of study: Department of Radiology, Chandka Medical College Hospital, Larkana from 1st July 2021 to 31st March 2022. Methodology: Fifty five patients underwent the procedure of unilateral-cochlear implantation. Slices of round window niche and round window membrane were selected for visualization through HRCT imaging. The temporal bone imaging through high resolution computed tomography scans; before and after the operation were examined in detailed and scored. Each round window membrane and round window niche was then visualized for its visibility. The sensitivity as well as specificity of high resolution computed tomography imaging in prediction of round window membrane visuality were calculated. Results: The comparison of predictive values showed that the positive-predictive value of RWM was 73.1% and negative as 91.2%. The sensitivity as well as the specificity of HRCT identification in prediction difficulty in visualizing RWM was 79% and 87% respectively. Conclusion: Pre-operative high resolution computed tomography was proved helpful in visualization of detecting round window niche. In most cases, the volume of formations localized on the mucous membranes of the head and neck is squamous cell carcinoma. The purpose of medical imaging is not only to determine the histological structure of the formation but also to assess its spread into the surrounding tissues in order to determine the disease stage and pathology for treatment.

Urinary tract tuberculosis misdiagnosed and treated as renal carcinoma in the presence of diffuse interstitial nephritis: a case report

BackgroundUrinary tract tuberculosis (UTTB) is a common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) which can infrequently present as renal carcinoma, leading to serious errors in the diagnosis and treatment of UTTB.Case presentationA 76-year-old Syrian man presented with gross hematuria as the main symptom. A urinary endoscopic examination and pelvic multi-slice computed tomography imaging increased the suspicion of a speared renal mass in the right urinary tract. The patient was treated for renal cancer. After nephrectomy and ureterctomy, the histopathology of the resected mass confirmed the diagnosis of UTTB and interstitial nephritis.ConclusionThis case should serve to increase the attention of clinicians to perform an accurate diagnosis step by step. This is especially important if they have a patient similar to the case described here who presents with a renal mass, to avoid serious results such as the loss of an essential organ system.

In order to solve the problem of multislice spiral CT and three-dimensional image reconstruction technology in the observation of ankle sports injuries under the microscope, to meet the needs of the accuracy of the diagnosis of traumatic fractures, to make up for the shortcomings of the traditional treatment cycle, and to improve the recovery speed of patients. The subjects were inpatients in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of a hospital from January 2020 to January 2021.The ankle joint belongs to the flexion joint, which is formed by a dense joint at the lower end of the fibula, tibia, and talus. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of bone fracture, accounting for approximately 3.9% of the total skeletal system, and is most likely to occur in adolescents.

Using CT-based body composition metrics and frailty index in predicting survival among older adults with cancer.

12057 Background: Older adults with cancer are at an increased risk of treatment related toxicities and excess mortality during cancer treatment. While altered body composition and frailty are associated with worse survival among older adults with cancer, no prior study has examined their combined influence on survival prediction. Methods: Prospective study of older adults (≥60 years) undergoing geriatric assessment (GA) at initial visit with a medical oncologist at UAB from 9/2017-07/2021 with available abdominal computed tomography (CT) within 60 days of GA. Using multi-slice CT images from T12 to L5 level, volumetric skeletal muscle (SMV), visceral (VATV) and subcutaneous (SATV) adipose tissues, and skeletal muscle density (SMD), were derived. Sex-specific z-scores for each measure were determined. A 44-item frailty index was obtained, using the deficit accumulation model. Overall survival (OS) was defined as time from GA to death or last follow-up (11/8/2021). Kaplan-Meier estimates of survival rates were compared using log-rank statistics. Multivariable cox regression models were used to predict OS in a random sub-sample (1:1 split of training:validation set), sequentially adding frailty and each body composition measure and assessing improvement with likelihood ratio tests and Harrel’s C statistic. Results: 815 patients were included (median age 68 years, 61% men, and 75% non-Hispanic Whites. 73% had gastrointestinal malignancies (stage III, 25%, stage, IV 48%). 32% were frail, 31% pre-frail. There was a weak negative correlation between height-adjusted SMV and frailty (r = -0.16), particularly among men (r -0.24). Over a median follow-up of 25.7 months (range 0.3-49.6 months), 268 patients (33%) died. The 2-year survival rate was 75.9%, 68.5% and 52.2% among robust, pre-frail and frail (log-rank p &lt;.001), respectively. In multivariable models adjusted for age, sex, race, cancer type and cancer stage, being frail (vs robust) (Hazards Ratio, HR = 2.32; 95%CI: 1.69-3.2; p &lt;.001) and higher skeletal muscle volume (HR = 0.85; 95%CI: 0.72-0.99; p= 0.04, per SD increment) were independently associated with OS. Adding body composition and frailty to clinical variables led to significant improvement in prediction (Harrel’s C increased from 0.69 to 0.74). In the validation set, discrimination was similar (Harrel’s C = 0.72) and plots suggested good model calibration. Conclusions: CT-based body composition metrics and frailty are independent predictors of OS among older adults with cancer and improve survival prediction compared to routine clinical risk factors.

Value of MSCT plus MRI in the Detection of Colon Cancer.

Colon cancer is a common digestive system malignancy with nonspecific early symptoms, which necessitates better early detection methods. The present study was conducted to assess the accuracy and clinical value of multislice spiral CT (MSCT) plus magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for colon cancer. Between January 2019 and July 2020, 100 patients with pathologically confirmed colon cancer treated in Wuxi People's Hospital were assessed for eligibility and recruited. All eligible patients received MRI and MSCT without any treatment prior to scanning. The accuracy of preoperative diagnosis and staging of colon cancer by MRI, MSCT, and MRI plus MSCT were analyzed using postoperative pathological results as the gold standard, and consistency analysis was performed. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was plotted, and the area under the curve (AUC) was obtained to analyze the preoperative diagnostic value. The accuracy of MRI, MSCT, and MRI plus MSCT was 98.00%, 96.00%, and 100% with good consistency (Kappa = 0.732, 0.703, and 0.756). The AUC of MRI, MSCT, and MRI plus MSCT was 0.889, 0.861, and 0.903, respectively. The preoperative diagnostic accuracy of MRI for colon cancer at T1, T2, T3, and T4 stages was 76.92%, 82.61%, 73.47%, and 86.67%, respectively, those of MSCT was 53.85%, 69.57%, 63.27%, and 40.00%, respectively, and those of MRI plus MSCT was 100.00%, 95.65%, 95.92%, and 86.67%, respectively. Consistency analysis yielded good consistency for the diagnosis of the T-staging of colon cancer (Kappa = 0.754, 0.731, 0.776). MSCT plus MRI yielded higher accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity in the detection of colon cancer versus the standalone MRI or MSCT, which demonstrated great potential in the early detection of colon cancer with a high clinical value.
