Sclerosing mucoepidermoid thyroid carcinoma combined with autoimmune thyroiditis

Background. Sclerosing mucoepidermoid thyroid carcinoma (SMTC) is a recently recognized malignant neoplasm of the thyroid. SMTC was frst reported in 1991. It arises in a background of Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT). There are two variants of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of thyroid gland: the conventional and sclerosing variants. SMTC has recently been recognized as a separate disease entity by World Health Organization (WHO). Description of the clinical case. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman with a 2-year history of autoimmune thyroiditis with a thyroid nodule. The patient had no symptoms or signs of compression. The level of thyroid–stimulating hormone (TSH) was 15.8 (range 0.4-4.0), antibodies to peroxidase: 150 Iu/ml. Scintigraphy of the thyroid gland revealed a dominant cold nodule (1.5×2 cm) in the right lobe of the gland. The control ultrasound examination showed negative fndings. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the nodule revealed follicular lesion in a background of TH. Extrafascial thyroidectomy was performed. The patient was followed up for 10 months.

Composite Follicular Variant of Papillary Carcinoma and Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of Thyroid Gland: A Case Report

A 50-yr-old male presented a thyroid mass with dysphasia and hoarseness. He underwent total thyroidectomy and neck node dissection. Pathologically, the tumor had two distinct tumor components with intermingled areas: follicular variant of papillary carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma composed of columnar cells, mucocytes, and squamoid cells showing solid and cystic lesion. Several small cysts lined by benign ciliated columnar epithelia suggesting that this tumor had originated from solid cell nest were seen around the tumor. By immunohistochemistry, columnar cells and squamoid cells in mucoepidermoid carcinoma were positive for cytokeratin but negative for thyroglobulin, TTF-1 and calcitonin. Positivity of p63 was seen in squamoid cells and basal cells of cysts. Some mucocytes are CEA positive. Tumor cells of papillary carcinoma are positive for TTF-1, thyroglobulin but negative for CEA, calcitonin and p63.

Occult papillary carcinoma of thyroid gland with mucoepidermoid features in a lymphnode metastasis––a report of a case

Primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of thyroid gland is an extremely rare tumour with only 21 cases reported to date. Only single case report has described primary papillary carcinoma of thyroid and mucoepidermoid component in a lymphnode metastasis. We report a case in which thyroid showed occult papillary carcinoma arising in background of fibrous type Hashimoto's thyroiditis, focus of solid cell nests and at the same time mucoepidermoid component in lymphnode metastasis.
