Porous Media Microstructure Determines the Diffusion of Active Matter: Experiments and Simulations

Active swimmers are known to accumulate along external boundaries owing to their persistent self-motion, resulting in a significant reduction in their effective mobility through heterogeneous and tortuous materials. The dynamic interplay between the slowdown experienced by the active constituents near boundaries and their long-time diffusivity is critical for understanding and predicting active transport in porous media. In this work, we study the impact of boundary layer accumulation on the effective diffusivity of active matter by analyzing the motion of active Brownian particles in an array of fixed obstacles. We combine Janus particle experiments, Brownian dynamics simulations, and a theoretical analysis based on the Smoluchowski equation. We find that the shape, curvature, and microstructure of the obstacles play a critical role in governing the effective diffusivity of active particles. Indeed, even at dilute packing fractions of obstacles, ϕ = 12%, we observed a 25% reduction in the effective diffusivity of active particles, which is much larger than the hindrance experienced by passive Brownian particles. Our combined experimental and computational results demonstrate a strong coupling between the active force and the porous media microstructure. This work provides a framework to predict and control the transport of active matter in heterogeneous materials.

Pseudo-chemotaxis of active Brownian particles competing for food.

Active Brownian particles (ABPs) are physical models for motility in simple life forms and easily studied in simulations. An open question is to what extent an increase of activity by a gradient of fuel, or food in living systems, results in an evolutionary advantage of actively moving systems such as ABPs over non-motile systems, which rely on thermal diffusion only. It is an established fact that within confined systems in a stationary state, the activity of ABPs generates density profiles that are enhanced in regions of low activity, which is thus referred to as ‘anti-chemotaxis’. This would suggest that a rather complex sensoric subsystem and information processing is a precondition to recognize and navigate towards a food source. We demonstrate in this work that in non-stationary setups, for instance as a result of short bursts of fuel/food, ABPs do in fact exhibit chemotactic behavior. In direct competition with inactive, but otherwise identical Brownian particles (BPs), the ABPs are shown to fetch a larger amount of food. We discuss this result based on simple physical arguments. From the biological perspective, the ability of primitive entities to move in direct response to the available amount of external energy would, even in absence of any sensoric devices, encompass an evolutionary advantage.

Collective motion of active Brownian particles with polar alignment.

We present a comprehensive computational study of the collective behavior emerging from the competition between self-propulsion, excluded volume interactions and velocity-alignment in a two-dimensional model of active particles. We consider an extension of the active brownian particles model where the self-propulsion direction of the particles aligns with the one of their neighbors. We analyze the onset of collective motion (flocking) in a low-density regime (10% surface area) and show that it is mainly controlled by the strength of velocity-alignment interactions: the competition between self-propulsion and crowding effects plays a minor role in the emergence of flocking. However, above the flocking threshold, the system presents a richer pattern formation scenario than analogous models without alignment interactions (active brownian particles) or excluded volume effects (Vicsek-like models). Depending on the parameter regime, the structure of the system is characterized by either a broad distribution of finite-sized polar clusters or the presence of an amorphous, highly fluctuating, large-scale traveling structure which can take a lane-like or band-like form (and usually a hybrid structure which is halfway in between both). We establish a phase diagram that summarizes collective behavior of polar active brownian particles and propose a generic mechanism to describe the complexity of the large-scale structures observed in systems of repulsive self-propelled particles.

Impact of correlated noise in an energy depot model.

Based on the depot model of the motion of active Brownian particles (ABPs), the impact of cross-correlated multiplicative and additive noises has been investigated. Using a nonlinear Langevin approach, we discuss a new mechanism for the transport of ABPs in which the energy originates from correlated noise. It is shown that the correlation between two types of noise breaks the symmetry of the potential to generate motion of the ABPs with a net velocity. The absolute maximum value of the mean velocity depends on correlated noise or multiplicative noise, whereas a monotonic decrease in the mean velocity occurs with additive noise. In the case of no correlation, the ABPs undergo pure diffusion with zero mean velocity, whereas in the case of perfect correlation, the ABPs undergo pure drift with zero diffusion. This shows that the energy stemming from correlated noise is primarily converted to kinetic energy of the intrawell motion and is eventually dissipated in drift motion. A physical explanation of the mechanisms for noise-driven transport of ABPs is derived from the effective potential of the Fokker-Planck equation.

Collective motion of active Brownian particles in one dimension

We analyze a model of active Brownian particles with non-linear friction and velocity coupling in one spatial dimension. The model exhibits two modes of motion observed in biological swarms: A disordered phase with vanishing mean velocity and an ordered phase with finite mean velocity. Starting from the microscopic Langevin equations, we derive mean-field equations of the collective dynamics. We identify the fixed points of the mean-field equations corresponding to the two modes and analyze their stability with respect to the model parameters. Finally, we compare our analytical findings with numerical simulations of the microscopic model.

Canonical active Brownian motion

Active Brownian motion is the complex motion of active Brownian particles. They are "active" in the sense that they can transform their internal energy into energy of motion and thus create complex motion patterns. Theories of active Brownian motion so far imposed couplings between the internal energy and the kinetic energy of the system. We investigate how this idea can be naturally taken further to include also couplings to the potential energy, which finally leads to a general theory of canonical dissipative systems. Explicit analytical and numerical studies are done for the motion of one particle in harmonic external potentials. Apart from stationary solutions, we study nonequilibrium dynamics and show the existence of various bifurcation phenomena.

Stationary swarming motion of active Brownian particles in parabolic external potential

We investigate the stationary swarming motion of active Brownian particles in parabolic external potential and coupled to its mass center. Using Monte Carlo simulation we first show that the mass center approaches to rest after a sufficient long period of time. Thus, all the particles of a swarm have identical stationary motion relative to the mass center. Then the stationary probability density obtained by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi integrable Hamiltonian systems in our previous paper for the motion in 4-dimensional phase space of single active Brownian particle with Rayleigh friction model in parabolic potential is used to describe the relative stationary motion of each particle of the swarm and to obtain more probability densities including that for the total energy of the swarm. The analytical results are confirmed by comparing with those from simulation and also shown to be consistent with the existing deterministic exact steady-state solution.

Stationary motion of active Brownian particles.

The stationary motion of active Brownian particles is studied by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems. First the stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems is briefly introduced. Then the stationary solution of the dynamic equations governing an active Brown particle in plane with the Rayleigh velocity-dependent friction model subject to Gaussian white noise excitations is obtained by using the stochastic averaging method. The solution is validated by comparison with the result from Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, two more stationary solutions of the dynamic equations governing active Brownian particle with the Schienbein-Gruler and Erdmann velocity-dependent friction models, respectively, subject to Gaussian white noise excitations are also given.

Stationary solution of motion of active Brownian particle

The stochastic averaging method for a quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system has been applied to the study of the motion of active Brownian particles. Firstly, the stochastic averaging method is introduced. Then, the stationary solution of the dynamic equations governing an active Brownian particle moving in a plane with Schienbein-Gruler velocity-dependent friction model subject to Guassian white noise excitation is obtained by using this method. The solution is proved validated by comparison with the results from digital simulation and those from experiment. Finally, the solutions for the Rayleigh and Erdamnn model are also given.

Uphill motion of active brownian particles in piecewise linear potentials

We consider Brownian particles with the ability to take up energy from the environment, to store it in an internal depot, and to convert internal energy into kinetic energy of motion. Provided a supercritical supply of energy, these particles are able to move in a ``high velocity'' or active mode, which allows them to move also against the gradient of an external potential. We investigate the critical energetic conditions of this self-driven motion for the case of a linear potential and a ratchet potential. In the latter case, we are able to find two different critical conversion rates for the internal energy, which describe the onset of a directed net current into the two different directions. The results of computer simulations are confirmed by analytical expressions for the critical parameters and the average velocity of the net current. Further, we investigate the influence of the asymmetry of the ratchet potential on the net current and estimate a critical value for the asymmetry in order to obtain a positive or negative net current.
