Increasing the scan-efficiency of pulmonary imaging at 0.55 T using iterative concomitant field and motion-corrected reconstruction.

To develop an iterative concomitant field and motion corrected (iCoMoCo) reconstruction for isotropic high-resolution UTE pulmonary imaging at 0.55 T. A free-breathing golden-angle stack-of-spirals UTE sequence was used to acquire data for 8 min with prototype and commercial 0.55 T MRI scanners. The data was binned into 12 respiratory phases based on superior-inferior navigator readouts. The previously published iterative motion corrected (iMoCo) reconstruction was extended to include concomitant field correction directly in the cost function. The reconstruction was implemented within the Gadgetron framework for inline reconstruction. Data were retrospectively reconstructed to simulate scan times of 2, 4, 6, and 8 min. Image quality was assessed using apparent SNR and image sharpness. The technique was evaluated in healthy volunteers and patients with known lung pathology including coronavirus disease 2019 infection, chronic granulomatous disease, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, and lung nodules. The technique provided diagnostic-quality images, and image quality was maintained with a slight loss in SNR for simulated scan times down to 4 min. Parenchymal apparent SNR was 4.33 ± 0.57, 5.96 ± 0.65, 7.36 ± 0.64, and 7.87 ± 0.65 using iCoMoCo with scan times of 2, 4, 6, and 8 min, respectively. Image sharpness at the diaphragm was comparable between iCoMoCo and reference images. Concomitant field corrections visibly improved the sharpness of anatomical structures away from the isocenter. Inline image reconstruction and artifact correction were achieved in <5 min. The proposed iCoMoCo pulmonary imaging technique can generate diagnostic quality images with 1.75 mm isotropic resolution in less than 5 min using a 6-min acquisition, on a 0.55 T scanner.

Stop moving: MR motion correction as an opportunity for artificial intelligence.

Subject motion is a long-standing problem of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which can seriously deteriorate the image quality. Various prospective and retrospective methods have been proposed for MRI motion correction, among which deep learning approaches have achieved state-of-the-art motion correction performance. This survey paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of deep learning-based MRI motion correction methods. Neural networks used for motion artifacts reduction and motion estimation in the image domain or frequency domain are detailed. Furthermore, besides motion-corrected MRI reconstruction, how estimated motion is applied in other downstream tasks is briefly introduced, aiming to strengthen the interaction between different research areas. Finally, we identify current limitations and point out future directions of deep learning-based MRI motion correction.

Inverse radon transform with deep learning: an application in cardiac motion correction

Objective. This paper addresses performing inverse radon transform (IRT) with artificial neural network (ANN) or deep learning, simultaneously with cardiac motion correction (MC). The suggested application domain is cardiac image reconstruction in emission or transmission tomography where IRT is relevant. Our main contribution is in proposing an ANN architecture that is particularly suitable for this purpose. Approach. We validate our approach with two types of datasets. First, we use an abstract object that looks like a heart to simulate motion-blurred radon transform. With the known ground truth in hand, we then train our proposed ANN architecture and validate its effectiveness in MC. Second, we used human cardiac gated datasets for training and validation of our approach. The gating mechanism bins data over time using the electro-cardiogram (ECG) signals for cardiac motion correction. Main results. We have shown that trained ANNs can perform motion-corrected image reconstruction directly from a motion-corrupted sinogram. We have compared our model against two other known ANN-based approaches. Significance. Our method paves the way for eliminating any need for hardware gating in medical imaging.

Non-rigid motion-compensated 3D whole-heart T2 mapping in a hybrid 3T PET-MR system.

Simultaneous PET-MRI improves inflammatory cardiac disease diagnosis. However, challenges persist in respiratory motion and mis-registration between free-breathing 3D PET and 2D breath-held MR images. We propose a free-breathing non-rigid motion-compensated 3D T2 -mapping sequence enabling whole-heart myocardial tissue characterization in a hybrid 3T PET-MR system and provides non-rigid respiratory motion fields to correct also simultaneously acquired PET data. Free-breathing 3D whole-heart T2 -mapping was implemented on a hybrid 3T PET-MRI system. Three datasets were acquired with different T2 -preparation modules (0, 28, 55 ms) using 3-fold undersampled variable-density Cartesian trajectory. Respiratory motion was estimated via virtual 3D image navigators, enabling multi-contrast non-rigid motion-corrected MR reconstruction. T2 -maps were computed using dictionary-matching. Approach was tested in phantom, 8 healthy subjects, 14 MR only and 2 PET-MR patients with suspected cardiac disease and compared with spin echo reference (phantom) and clinical 2D T2 -mapping (in-vivo). Phantom results show a high correlation (R2 = 0.996) between proposed approach and gold standard 2D T2 mapping. In-vivo 3D T2 -mapping average values in healthy subjects (39.0 ± 1.4 ms) and patients (healthy tissue) (39.1 ± 1.4 ms) agree with conventional 2D T2 -mapping (healthy = 38.6 ± 1.2 ms, patients = 40.3 ± 1.7 ms). Bland-Altman analysis reveals bias of 1.8 ms and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) of -2.4-6 ms for healthy subjects, and bias of 1.3 ms and 95% LOA of -1.9 to 4.6 ms for patients. Validated efficient 3D whole-heart T2 -mapping at hybrid 3T PET-MRI provides myocardial inflammation characterization and non-rigid respiratory motion fields for simultaneous PET data correction. Comparable T2 values were achieved with both 3D and 2D methods. Improved image quality was observed in the PET images after MR-based motion correction.

Feasibility of a Prototype Image Reconstruction Algorithm for Motion Correction in Interventional Cone-Beam CT Scans

Assess the feasibility of a prototype image reconstruction algorithm in correcting motion artifacts in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of interventional instruments in the lung. First, phantom experiments were performed to assess the algorithm, using the Xsight lung phantom with custom inserts containing straight or curved catheters. During scanning, the inserts moved in a continuous sinusoidal or breath-hold mimicking pattern, with varying amplitudes and frequencies. Subsequently, the algorithm was applied to CBCT data from navigation bronchoscopy procedures. The algorithm's performance was assessed quantitatively via edge-sharpness measurements and qualitatively by three specialists. In the phantom study, the algorithm improved sharpness in 13 out of 14 continuous sinusoidal motion and five out of sevenbreath-hold mimicking scans, with more significant effects at larger motion amplitudes. Analysis of 27 clinical scans showed that the motion corrected reconstructions had significantly sharper edges than standard reconstructions (2.81 (2.24-6.46) vs. 2.80 (2.16-4.75), p=0.003). These results were consistent with the qualitative assessment, which showed higher scores in the sharpness of bronchoscope-tissue interface and catheter-tissue interface in the motion-corrected reconstructions. However, the tumor demarcation ratings were inconsistent between raters, and the overall image quality of the new reconstructions was rated lower. Our findings suggest that applying the new prototype algorithm for motion correction in CBCT images is feasible. The algorithm improved the sharpness of medical instruments in CBCT scans obtained during diagnostic navigation bronchoscopy procedures, which was demonstrated both quantitatively and qualitatively.

A motion-corrected deep-learning reconstruction framework for accelerating whole-heart magnetic resonance imaging in patients with congenital heart disease

BackgroundMRI is an important imaging modality for the assessment and management of adult patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). However, conventional techniques for 3D whole-heart acquisition involve long and unpredictable scan times and methods that accelerate scans via k-space undersampling often rely on long iterative reconstructions. Deep-learning-based reconstruction methods have recently attracted much interest due to their capacity to provide fast reconstructions whilst often outperforming existing state-of-the-art methods. In this study, we sought to adapt and validate a non-rigid motion-corrected model-based deep-learning (MoCo-MoDL) reconstruction framework for 3D whole-heart MRI in a CHD patient cohort. MethodsThe previously proposed deep-learning reconstruction framework MoCo-MoDL, which incorporates a non-rigid motion-estimation network and a denoising regularisation network within an unrolled iterative reconstruction, was trained in an end-to-end manner using 39 CHD patient datasets. Once trained, the framework was evaluated in 8 CHD patient datasets acquired with seven-fold prospective undersampling. Reconstruction quality was compared with the state-of-the-art non-rigid motion-corrected patch-based low-rank reconstruction method (NR-PROST) and against reference images (acquired with three-or-four-fold undersampling and reconstructed with NR-PROST). ResultsSeven-fold undersampled scan times were 2.1 ± 0.3 minutes and reconstruction times were ~ 30 seconds, approximately 240 times faster than an NR-PROST reconstruction. Image quality comparable to the reference images was achieved using the proposed MoCo-MoDL framework, with no statistically significant differences found in any of the assessed quantitative or qualitative image quality measures. Additionally, expert image quality scores indicated the MoCo-MoDL reconstructions were consistently of a higher quality than the NR-PROST reconstructions of the same data, with the differences in 12 of the 22 scores measured for individual vascular structures found to be statistically significant. ConclusionThe MoCo-MoDL framework was applied to an adult CHD patient cohort, achieving good quality 3D whole-heart images from ~ 2-minute scans with reconstruction times of ~ 30 seconds.

Correction of motion tracking errors for PET head rigid motion correction

Objective. In positron emission tomography (PET) rigid motion correction, erroneous tracking information translates into reduced quality in motion corrected reconstructions. We aim to improve the accuracy of the motion tracking data, to improve the quality of motion corrected reconstructions. Approach. We developed a method for correction of marker/skin displacement over the skull, for tracking methods which require multiple markers attached on the subject head. Additionally, we correct for small magnitude (∼1–2 mm) residual translation tracking errors that can still be present after other corrections. We performed [18F]FDG scans in awake mice (n = 8) and rats (n = 8), and dynamic [18F]SynVesT-1 scans in awake mice (n = 8). Head tracking was performed with the point source tracking method, attaching 3–4 radioactive fiducial markers on the animals’ heads. List-mode even-by-event motion correction reconstruction was performed using tracking data obtained from the point source tracking method (MC), tracking data corrected for marker displacement (MC-DC), and tracking data with additional correction for residual translation tracking errors (MC-DCT). Image contrast, and the image enhancement metric (IEM, with MC as reference) were calculated in these 3 reconstructions. Main results. In mice [18F]FDG scans, the contrast increased on average 3% from MC to MC-DC (IEM: 1.01), and 5% from MC to MC-DCT (IEM: 1.02). For mice [18F]SynVesT-1 scans the contrast increased 6% from MC to MC-DC (IEM: 1.03), and 7% from MC to MC-DCT (IEM: 1.05). In rat [18F]FDG scans contrast increased 5% (IEM: 1.04), and 9% (IEM: 1.05), respectively. Significance. The methods presented here serve to correct motion tracking errors in PET brain scans, which translates into improved image quality in motion corrected reconstructions.

Feasibility of online non-rigid motion correction for high-resolution supine breast MRI.

Conventional breast MRI is performed in the prone position with a dedicated coil. This allows high-resolution images without breast motion, but the patient position is inconsistent with that of other breast imaging modalities or interventions. Supine breast MRI may be an interesting alternative, but respiratory motion becomes an issue. Motion correction methods have typically been performed offline, for instance, the corrected images were not directly accessible from the scanner console. In this work, we seek to show the feasibility of a fast, online, motion-corrected reconstruction integrated into the clinical workflow. Fully sampled T2 -weighted (T2 w) and accelerated T1 -weighted (T1 w) breast supine MR images were acquired during free-breathing and were reconstructed using a non-rigid motion correction technique (generalized reconstruction by inversion of coupled systems). Online reconstruction was implemented using a dedicated system combining the MR raw data and respiratory signals from an external motion sensor. Reconstruction parameters were optimized on a parallel computing platform, and image quality was assessed by objective metrics and by radiologist scoring. Online reconstruction time was 2 to 2.5 min. The metrics and the scores related to the motion artifacts significantly improved for both T2 w and T1 w sequences. The overall quality of T2 w images was approaching that of the prone images, whereas the quality of T1 w images remained significantly lower. The proposed online algorithm allows a noticeable reduction of motion artifacts and an improvement of the diagnostic quality for supine breast imaging with a clinically acceptable reconstruction time. These findings serve as a starting point for further development aimed at improving the quality of T1 w images.

Motion-corrected model-based reconstruction for 2D myocardial T1 mapping.

To allow for T1 mapping of the myocardium within 2.3 s for a 2D slice utilizing cardiac motion-corrected, model-based image reconstruction. Golden radial data acquisition is continuously carried out for 2.3 s after an inversion pulse. In a first step, dynamic images are reconstructed which show both contrast changes due to T1 recovery and anatomical changes due to the heartbeat. An image registration algorithm with a signal model for T1 recovery is applied to estimate non-rigid cardiac motion. In a second step, estimated motion fields are applied during an iterative model-based T1 reconstruction. The approach was evaluated in numerical simulations, phantom experiments and in in-vivo scans in healthy volunteers. The accuracy of cardiac motion estimation was shown in numerical simulations with an average motion field error of 0.7 ± 0.6 mm for a motion amplitude of 5.1 mm. The accuracy of T1 estimation was demonstrated in phantom experiments, with no significant difference (p = 0.13) in T1 estimated by the proposed approach compared to an inversion-recovery reference method. In vivo, the proposed approach yielded 1.3 × 1.3 mm T1 maps with no significant difference (p = 0.77) in T1 and SDs in comparison to a cardiac-gated approach requiring 16 s scan time (i.e., seven times longer than the proposed approach). Cardiac motion correction improved the precision of T1 maps, shown by a 40% reduced SD. We have presented an approach that provides T1 maps of the myocardium in 2.3 s by utilizing both cardiac motion correction and model-based T1 reconstruction.

Deep learning-based left ventricular segmentation demonstrates improved performance on respiratory motion-resolved whole-heart reconstructions.

Deep learning (DL)-based segmentation has gained popularity for routine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) image analysis and in particular, delineation of left ventricular (LV) borders for LV volume determination. Free-breathing, self-navigated, whole-heart CMR exams provide high-resolution, isotropic coverage of the heart for assessment of cardiac anatomy including LV volume. The combination of whole-heart free-breathing CMR and DL-based LV segmentation has the potential to streamline the acquisition and analysis of clinical CMR exams. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a DL-based automatic LV segmentation network trained primarily on computed tomography (CT) images in two whole-heart CMR reconstruction methods: (1) an in-line respiratory motion-corrected (Mcorr) reconstruction and (2) an off-line, compressed sensing-based, multi-volume respiratory motion-resolved (Mres) reconstruction. Given that Mres images were shown to have greater image quality in previous studies than Mcorr images, we hypothesized that the LV volumes segmented from Mres images are closer to the manual expert-traced left ventricular endocardial border than the Mcorr images. This retrospective study used 15 patients who underwent clinically indicated 1.5 T CMR exams with a prototype ECG-gated 3D radial phyllotaxis balanced steady state free precession (bSSFP) sequence. For each reconstruction method, the absolute volume difference (AVD) of the automatically and manually segmented LV volumes was used as the primary quantity to investigate whether 3D DL-based LV segmentation generalized better on Mcorr or Mres 3D whole-heart images. Additionally, we assessed the 3D Dice similarity coefficient between the manual and automatic LV masks of each reconstructed 3D whole-heart image and the sharpness of the LV myocardium-blood pool interface. A two-tail paired Student's t-test (alpha = 0.05) was used to test the significance in this study. The AVD in the respiratory Mres reconstruction was lower than the AVD in the respiratory Mcorr reconstruction: 7.73 ± 6.54 ml vs. 20.0 ± 22.4 ml, respectively (n = 15, p-value = 0.03). The 3D Dice coefficient between the DL-segmented masks and the manually segmented masks was higher for Mres images than for Mcorr images: 0.90 ± 0.02 vs. 0.87 ± 0.03 respectively, with a p-value = 0.02. Sharpness on Mres images was higher than on Mcorr images: 0.15 ± 0.05 vs. 0.12 ± 0.04, respectively, with a p-value of 0.014 (n = 15). We conclude that the DL-based 3D automatic LV segmentation network trained on CT images and fine-tuned on MR images generalized better on Mres images than on Mcorr images for quantifying LV volumes.

Single-heartbeat cardiac cine imaging via jointly regularized nonrigid motion-corrected reconstruction.

The aim of the current study was to develop a novel approach for 2D breath-hold cardiac cine imaging from a single heartbeat, by combining cardiac motion-corrected reconstructions and nonrigidly aligned patch-based regularization. Conventional cardiac cine imaging is obtained via motion-resolved reconstructions of data acquired over multiple heartbeats. Here, we achieve single-heartbeat cine imaging by incorporating nonrigid cardiac motion correction into the reconstruction of each cardiac phase, in conjunction with a motion-aligned patch-based regularization. The proposed Motion-Corrected CINE (MC-CINE) incorporates all acquired data into the reconstruction of each (motion-corrected) cardiac phase, resulting in a better posed problem than motion-resolved approaches. MC-CINE was compared with iterative sensitivity encoding (itSENSE) and Extra-Dimensional Golden Angle Radial Sparse Parallel (XD-GRASP) in 14 healthy subjects in terms of image sharpness, reader scoring (range: 1-5) and reader ranking (range: 1-9) of image quality, and single-slice left ventricular assessment. MC-CINE was significantly superior to both itSENSE and XD-GRASP using 20 heartbeats, two heartbeats, and one heartbeat. Iterative SENSE, XD-GRASP, and MC-CINE achieved a sharpness of 74%, 74%, and 82% using 20 heartbeats, and 53%, 66%, and 82% with one heartbeat, respectively. The corresponding results for reader scoring were 4.0, 4.7, and 4.9 with 20 heartbeats, and 1.1, 3.0, and 3.9 with one heartbeat. The corresponding results for reader ranking were 5.3, 7.3, and 8.6 with 20 heartbeats, and 1.0, 3.2, and 5.4 with one heartbeat. MC-CINE using a single heartbeat presented nonsignificant differences in image quality to itSENSE with 20 heartbeats. MC-CINE and XD-GRASP at one heartbeat both presented a nonsignificant negative bias of less than 2% in ejection fraction relative to the reference itSENSE. It was concluded that the proposed MC-CINE significantly improves image quality relative to itSENSE and XD-GRASP, enabling 2D cine from a single heartbeat.

Low-rank motion correction for accelerated free-breathing first-pass myocardial perfusion imaging.

Develop a novel approach for accelerated 2D free-breathing myocardial perfusion via low-rank motion-corrected (LRMC) reconstructions. Myocardial perfusion imaging requires high spatial and temporal resolution, despite scan time constraints. Here, we incorporate LRMC models into the reconstruction-encoding operator, together with high-dimensionality patch-based regularization, to produce high quality, motion-corrected myocardial perfusion series from free-breathing acquisitions. The proposed framework estimates beat-to-beat nonrigid respiratory (and any other incidental) motion and the dynamic contrast subspace from the actual acquired data, which are then incorporated into the proposed LRMC reconstruction. LRMC was compared with iterative SENSitivity Encoding(SENSE) (itSENSE) and low-rank plus sparse (LpS) reconstruction in 10 patients based on image-quality scoring and ranking by two clinical expert readers. LRMC achieved significantly improved results relative to itSENSE and LpS in terms of image sharpness, temporal coefficient of variation, and expert reader evaluation. Left ventricle image sharpness was approximately 75%, 79%, and 86% for itSENSE, LpS and LRMC, respectively, indicating improved image sharpness for the proposed approach. Corresponding temporal coefficient of variation results were 23%, 11% and 7%, demonstrating improved temporal fidelity of the perfusion signal with the proposed LRMC. Corresponding clinical expert reader scores (1-5, from poor to excellent image quality) were 3.3, 3.9 and 4.9, demonstrating improved image quality with the proposed LRMC, in agreement with the automated metrics. LRMC produces motion-corrected myocardial perfusion in free-breathing acquisitions with substantially improved image quality when compared with iterative SENSE and LpS reconstructions.

High-resolution motion- and phase-corrected functional MRI at 7 T using shuttered multishot echo-planar imaging.

To achieve high-resolution multishot echo-planar imaging (EPI) for functional MRI (fMRI) with reduced sensitivity to in-plane motion and between-shot phase variations. Two-dimensional radiofrequency pulses were incorporated in a multishot EPI sequence at 7T which selectively excited a set of in-plane bands (shutters) in the phase encoding direction, which moved between shots to cover the entire slice. A phase- and motion-corrected reconstruction was implemented for the acquisition. Brain imaging experiments were performed with instructed motion to evaluate image quality for conventional multishot and shuttered EPI. Temporal stability was assessed in three subjects by quantifying temporal SNR (tSNR) and artifact levels, and fMRI activation experiments using visual stimulation were performed to assess the strength and distribution of activation, using both conventional multishot and shuttered EPI. In the instructed motion experiment, ghosting was lower in shuttered EPI images without or with corrections and image quality metrics were improved with motion correction. tSNR was improved by phase correction in both conventional multishot and shuttered EPI and the acquisitions had similar tSNR without and with phase correction. However, while phase correction was necessary to maximize tSNR in conventional multishot EPI, it also increased intermittent ghosting, but did not increase intermittent ghosting in shuttered EPI. Phase correction increased activation strength in both conventional multishot and shuttered EPI, but caused increased spurious activation outside the brain and in frontal brain regions in conventional multishot EPI. Shuttered EPI supports multishot segmented EPI acquisitions with lower sensitivity to artifacts from motion for high-resolution fMRI.

Evaluation of a respiratory motion-corrected image reconstruction algorithm in 2-[18F]FDG and [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-NOC PET/CT: impacts on image quality and tumor quantification

Respiratory motions may cause artifacts on positron emission tomography (PET) images that degrade image quality and quantification accuracy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a respiratory motion-corrected image reconstruction (MCIR) algorithm on image quality and tumor quantification compared with nongated/nonmotion-corrected reconstruction. We used a phantom consisting of 5 motion spheres immersed in a chamber driven by a motor. The spheres and the background chamber were filled with 18F solution at a sphere-to-background ratio of 5:1. We enrolled 42 and 16 patients undergoing 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose {2-[18F]FDG} and 68Ga-labeled [1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid]-1-Nal3-octreotide {[68Ga]Ga-DOTA-NOC} PET/computed tomography (CT) from whom 74 and 30 lesions were segmented, respectively. Three reconstructions were performed: data-driven gating-based motion correction (DDGMC), external vital signal module-based motion correction (VSMMC), and noncorrection reconstruction. The standardized uptake values (SUVs) and the volume of the spheres and the lesions were measured and compared among the 3 reconstruction groups. The image noise in the liver was measured, and the visual image quality of motion artifacts was scored by radiologists in the patient study. In the phantom study, the spheres' SUVs increased by 26-36%, and the volumes decreased by 35-38% in DDGMC and VSMMC compared with the noncorrection group. In the 2-[18F]FDG PET patient study, the lesions' SUVs had a median increase of 10.87-12.65% while the volumes had a median decrease of 14.88-15.18% in DDGMC and VSMMC compared with those of noncorrection. In the [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-NOC PET patient study, the lesions' SUVs increased by 14.23-15.45%, and the volumes decreased by 19.11-20.94% in DDGMC and VSMMC. The image noise in the liver was equal between the DDGMC, VSMMC, and noncorrection groups. Radiologists found improved image quality in more than 45% of the cases in DDGMC and VSMMC compared with the noncorrection group. There was no statistically significant difference in SUVs, volumes, or visual image quality scores between DDGMC and VSMMC. MCIR improves tumor quantification accuracy and visual image quality by reducing respiratory motion artifacts without compromised image noise performance or elongated acquisition time in 2-[18F]FDG and [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-NOC PET/CT tumor imaging. The performance of DDG-driven MCIR is as good as that of the external device-driven solution.

Clinical validation of an AI-based motion correction reconstruction algorithm in cerebral CT.

To evaluate the clinical performance of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based motion correction (MC) reconstruction algorithm for cerebral CT. A total of 53 cases, where motion artifacts were found in the first scan so that an immediate rescan was taken, were retrospectively enrolled. While the rescanned images were reconstructed with a hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithm (reference group), images of the first scan were reconstructed with both the hybrid IR (motion group) and the MC algorithm (MC group). Image quality was compared in terms of standard deviation (SD), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), the mean squared error (MSE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), and mutual information (MI), as well as subjective scores. The diagnostic performance for each case was evaluated accordingly by lesion detectability or the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) assessment. Compared with the motion group, the SNR and CNR of the MC group were significantly increased. The MSE, PSNR, SSIM, and MI with respect to the reference group were improved by 44.1%, 15.8%, 7.4%, and 18.3%, respectively (all p < 0.001). Subjective image quality indicators were scored higher for the MC than the motion group (p < 0.05). Improved lesion detectability and higher AUC (0.817 vs 0.614) in the ASPECTS assessment were found for the MC to the motion group. The AI-based MC reconstruction algorithm has been clinically validated for reducing motion artifacts and improving diagnostic performance of cerebral CT. • An artificial intelligence-based motion correction (MC) reconstruction algorithm has been clinically validated in both qualitative and quantitative manner. • The MC algorithm reduces motion artifacts in cerebral CT and increases the diagnostic confidence for brain lesions. • The MC algorithm can help avoiding rescans caused by motion and improving the efficiency of cerebral CT in the emergency department.

Spatiotemporal Kernel Reconstruction for Linear Parametric Neurotransmitter PET Kinetic Modeling in Motion Correction Brain PET of Awake Rats.

The linear parametric neurotransmitter positron emission tomography (lp-ntPET) kinetic model can be used to detect transient changes (activation) in endogenous neurotransmitter levels. Preclinical PET scans in awake animals can be performed to investigate neurotransmitter transient changes. Here we use the spatiotemporal kernel reconstruction (Kernel) for noise reduction in dynamic PET, and lp-ntPET kinetic modeling. Kernel is adapted for motion correction reconstruction, applied in awake rat PET scans. We performed 2D rat brain phantom simulation using the ntPET model at 3 different noise levels. Data was reconstructed with independent frame reconstruction (IFR), IFR with HYPR denoising, and Kernel, and lp-ntPET kinetic parameters (k2a: efflux rate, γ: activation magnitude, td: activation onset time, and tp: activation peak time) were calculated. Additionally, significant activation magnitude (γ) difference with respect to a region with no activation (rest) was calculated. Finally, [11C]raclopride experiments were performed in anesthetized and awake rats, injecting cold raclopride at 20 min after scan start to simulate endogenous neurotransmitter release. For simulated data at the regional level, IFR coefficient of variation (COV) of k2a, γ, td and tp was reduced with HYPR denoising, but Kernel showed the lowest COV (2 fold reduction compared with IFR). At the pixel level the same trend is observed for k2a, γ, td and tp COV, but reduction is larger with Kernel compared with IFR (10–14 fold). Bias in γ with respect with noise-free values was additionally reduced using Kernel (difference of 292, 72.4, and −6.92% for IFR, IFR+KYPR, and Kernel, respectively). Significant difference in activation between the rest and active region could be detected at a simulated activation of 160% for IFR and IFR+HYPR, and of 120% for Kernel. In rat experiments, lp-ntPET parameters have better confidence intervals using Kernel. In the γ, and td parametric maps, the striatum structure can be identified with Kernel but not with IFR. Striatum voxel-wise γ, td and tp values have lower variability using Kernel compared with IFR and IFR+HYPR. The spatiotemporal kernel reconstruction adapted for motion correction reconstruction allows to improve lp-ntPET kinetic modeling noise in awake rat studies, as well as detection of subtle neurotransmitter activations.

Motion correction and volumetric reconstruction for fetal functional magnetic resonance imaging data

Motion correction is an essential preprocessing step in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) of the fetal brain with the aim to remove artifacts caused by fetal movement and maternal breathing and consequently to suppress erroneous signal correlations. Current motion correction approaches for fetal fMRI choose a single 3D volume from a specific acquisition timepoint with least motion artefacts as reference volume, and perform interpolation for the reconstruction of the motion corrected time series. The results can suffer, if no low-motion frame is available, and if reconstruction does not exploit any assumptions about the continuity of the fMRI signal. Here, we propose a novel framework, which estimates a high-resolution reference volume by using outlier-robust motion correction, and by utilizing Huber L2 regularization for intra-stack volumetric reconstruction of the motion-corrected fetal brain fMRI. We performed an extensive parameter study to investigate the effectiveness of motion estimation and present in this work benchmark metrics to quantify the effect of motion correction and regularised volumetric reconstruction approaches on functional connectivity computations. We demonstrate the proposed framework’s ability to improve functional connectivity estimates, reproducibility and signal interpretability, which is clinically highly desirable for the establishment of prognostic noninvasive imaging biomarkers. The motion correction and volumetric reconstruction framework is made available as an open-source package of NiftyMIC.

Myocardial T1, T2, T2*, and fat fraction quantification via low-rank motion-corrected cardiac MR fingerprinting.

PurposeDevelop a novel 2D cardiac MR fingerprinting (MRF) approach to enable simultaneous T1, T2, T2*, and fat fraction (FF) myocardial tissue characterization in a single breath‐hold scan.MethodsSimultaneous, co‐registered, multi‐parametric mapping of T1, T2, and FF has been recently achieved with cardiac MRF. Here, we further incorporate T2* quantification within this approach, enabling simultaneous T1, T2, T2*, and FF myocardial tissue characterization in a single breath‐hold scan. T2* quantification is achieved with an eight‐echo readout that requires a long cardiac acquisition window. A novel low‐rank motion‐corrected (LRMC) reconstruction is exploited to correct for cardiac motion within the long acquisition window. The proposed T1/T2/T2*/FF cardiac MRF was evaluated in phantom and in 10 healthy subjects in comparison to conventional mapping techniques.ResultsThe proposed approach achieved high quality parametric mapping of T1, T2, T2*, and FF with corresponding normalized RMS error (RMSE) T1 = 5.9%, T2 = 9.6% (T2 values <100 ms), T2* = 3.3% (T2* values <100 ms), and FF = 0.8% observed in phantom scans. In vivo, the proposed approach produced higher left‐ventricular myocardial T1 values than MOLLI (1148 vs 1056 ms), lower T2 values than T2‐GraSE (42.8 vs 50.6 ms), lower T2* values than eight‐echo gradient echo (GRE) (35.0 vs 39.4 ms), and higher FF values than six‐echo GRE (0.8 vs 0.3 %) reference techniques. The proposed approach achieved considerable reduction in motion artifacts compared to cardiac MRF without motion correction, improved spatial uniformity, and statistically higher apparent precision relative to conventional mapping for all parameters.ConclusionThe proposed cardiac MRF approach enables simultaneous, co‐registered mapping of T1, T2, T2*, and FF in a single breath‐hold for comprehensive myocardial tissue characterization, achieving higher apparent precision than conventional methods.

AreTomo: An integrated software package for automated marker-free, motion-corrected cryo-electron tomographic alignment and reconstruction

AreTomo, an abbreviation for Alignment and Reconstruction for Electron Tomography, is a GPU accelerated software package that fully automates motion-corrected marker-free tomographic alignment and reconstruction in a single package. By correcting in-plane rotation, translation, and importantly, the local motion resulting from beam-induced motion from tilt to tilt, AreTomo can produce tomograms with sufficient accuracy to be directly used for subtomogram averaging. Another major application is the on-the-fly reconstruction of tomograms in parallel with tilt series collection to provide users with real-time feedback of sample quality allowing users to make any necessary adjustments of collection parameters. Here, the multiple alignment algorithms implemented in AreTomo are described and the local motions measured on a typical tilt series are analyzed. The residual local motion after correction for global motion was found in the range of ± 80 Å, indicating that the accurate correction of local motion is critical for high-resolution cryo-electron tomography (cryoET).
