Physiological and morphological plasticity in response to nitrogen availability of a yeast widely distributed in the open ocean.

Yeasts are prevalent in the open ocean, yet we have limited understanding of their ecophysiological adaptations, including their response to nitrogen availability, which can have a major role in determining the ecological potential of other planktonic microbes. In this study, we characterized the nitrogen uptake capabilities and growth responses of marine-occurring yeasts. Yeast isolates from the North Atlantic Ocean were screened for growth on diverse nitrogen substrates, and across a concentration gradient of three environmentally relevant nitrogen substrates: nitrate, ammonium, and urea. Three strains grew with enriched nitrate while two did not, demonstrating that nitrate utilization is present but not universal in marine yeasts, consistent with existing knowledge of nonmarine yeast strains. Naganishia diffluens MBA_F0213 modified the key functional trait of cell size in response to nitrogen concentration, suggesting yeast cell morphology changes along chemical gradients in the marine environment. Meta-analysis of the reference DNA barcode in public databases revealed that the genus Naganishia has a global ocean distribution, strengthening the environmental applicability of the culture-based observations. This study provides novel quantitative understanding of the ecophysiological and morphological responses of marine-derived yeasts to variable nitrogen availability in vitro, providing insight into the functional ecology of yeasts within pelagic open ocean environments.

Cucumber leaf necrosis caused by radiation with abrupt increase of far-red component

Plants exhibit morphological plasticity in response to changes in the proportion of far-red radiation (FR). However, little is known about the response to a sudden increase of FR component. Cucumber seedlings were acclimatized to radiation without FR (FR-) for 1 - 5 d after germination, and then transferred to radiation containing FR (FR+) at levels similar to those in natural sunlight. Other seedlings were acclimatized to FR- or FR+, which was maintained continuously. The sudden increase in FR damaged the cotyledons and the first true leaf, especially when radiation was changed from FR- to FR+ at days 3 or 4 after germination. Necrosis of the damaged leaves may have resulted from inhibition of water flow in leaf xylem, because wilting and decreased stomatal conductance were observed simultaneously with leaf necrosis. Plants in the treatment groups that showed the most frequent damage showed two peaks in cotyledon elongation. This suggests that the leaves that had been acclimatized to FR- were easily damaged by the sudden promotion of leaf expansion caused by FR+.

Dynamic morphological plasticity in response to emergence timing in Abutilon theophrasti (Malvaceae).

Selections on emergence time might be conflicting, suggesting the existence of the optimal emergence time for plants. However, we know little about this and how morphological plasticity contributes to the strategies of plants in response to emergence timing. To better understand this issue from a dynamic perspective, we conducted a field experiment by subjecting plants of Abutilon theophrasti to four emergence treatments (ET1~ ET4) and measuring a number of mass and morphological traits on them at different growth stages (I ~ IV). On day 50, 70, and/or final harvest, among all ET treatments, plants germinated in late spring (ET2) performed the best in total mass, spring germinants (ET1) and ET2 performed better in stem allocation, stem, and root diameters than later germinants (ET3 and ET4); summer germinants (ET3) had the highest reproductive mass and allocation, while late-summer germinants (ET4) had the greatest leaf mass allocation, with greater or canalized leaf number, and root length traits than others. Plants that emerged in late spring can maximize their growth potential, while those with either advanced or delayed emergence are still capable of adaptation via allocation and morphological plasticity. Early germinants (ET1 and ET2) preferred stem growth to leaf and reproductive growth, due to sufficient time for reproduction in the growth season. With limited time for growth, plants that emerged late may prefer to quicken leaf growth (indicated by increased leaf mass allocation and leaf number) at the cost of stem or root growth for the complete life cycle, reflecting both positive and negative effects of delayed emergence.

Plastic Morphological Response to Spectral Shifts during Inorganic Phototropic Growth.

Plants exhibit phototropism in which growth is directed toward sunlight and demonstrate morphological plasticity in response to changes in the spectral distribution of the incident illumination. Inorganic phototropic growth via template-free, light-directed electrochemical deposition of semiconductor material can spontaneously generate highly ordered mesostructures with anisotropic, nanoscale lamellar features that exhibit a pitch proportional to the wavelength (λ) of the stimulating illumination. In this work, Se–Te films were generated via a two-step inorganic phototropic growth process using a series of narrowband light-emitting diode sources with discrete output wavelengths (λ0 ≠ λ1). Analogous to the plasticity observed in plants, changes in illumination wavelength from λ0 to λ1 resulted in morphological changes including feature branching, termination, and/or fusion along the growth direction. The interfacial feature pitch changed with the growth duration, in some cases in a notably nonmonotonic fashion, and eventually matched that obtained for growth using only λ1. Simulated morphologies generated by modeling light–material interactions at the growth interface closely matched the evolved structures observed experimentally, indicating that the characteristics of the optical stimulation produce the observed plastic response during inorganic phototropic growth. Examination of the interfacial electric field modulation for λ1 illumination of simplified structures, representative of those generated experimentally, revealed the interfacial light scattering and concentration behavior that directed phototropic growth away from equilibrium, as well as the emergent nature of the phenomena that reestablish equilibrium.

Plasticity in fluctuating hydrodynamic conditions: tube foot regeneration in sea urchins.

Regenerating structures critical for survival provide excellent model systems for the study of phenotypic plasticity. These body components must regenerate their morphology and functionality quickly while subjected to different environmental stressors. Sea urchins live in high-energy environments where hydrodynamic conditions pose significant challenges. Adhesive tube feet provide secure attachment to the substratum but can be amputated by predation and hydrodynamic forces. Tube feet display functional and morphological plasticity in response to environmental conditions, but regeneration to their pre-amputation status has not been achieved under quiescent laboratory settings. In this study, we assessed the effect of turbulent water movement, periodic emersion and quiescent conditions on the regeneration process of tube foot morphology (length, disc area) and functionality (maximum disc tenacity, stem breaking force). Disc area showed significant plasticity in response to the treatments; when exposed to emersion and turbulent water movement, disc area was larger than that of tube feet regenerated in quiescent conditions. However, no treatment stimulated regeneration to pre-amputation sizes. Tube foot length was unaffected by treatments and remained shorter than non-amputated tube feet. Stem breaking force for amputated and non-amputated treatments increased in all cases when compared with pre-amputation values. Maximum tenacity (force per unit area) was similar among tube feet subjected to simulated field conditions and amputation treatments. Our results suggest a role of active plasticity of tube foot functional morphology in response to field-like conditions and demonstrate the plastic response of invertebrates to laboratory conditions.

Chytrid rhizoid morphogenesis resembles hyphal development in multicellular fungi and is adaptive to resource availability.

Key to the ecological prominence of fungi is their distinctive cell biology, our understanding of which has been principally based on dikaryan hyphal and yeast forms. The early-diverging Chytridiomycota (chytrids) are ecologically important and a significant component of fungal diversity, yet their cell biology remains poorly understood. Unlike dikaryan hyphae, chytrids typically attach to substrates and feed osmotrophically via anucleate rhizoids. The evolution of fungal hyphae appears to have occurred from rhizoid-bearing lineages and it has been hypothesized that a rhizoid-like structure was the precursor to multicellular hyphae. Here, we show in a unicellular chytrid, Rhizoclosmatium globosum, that rhizoid development exhibits striking similarities with dikaryan hyphae and is adaptive to resource availability. Rhizoid morphogenesis exhibits analogous patterns to hyphal growth and is controlled by β-glucan-dependent cell wall synthesis and actin polymerization. Chytrid rhizoids growing from individual cells also demonstrate adaptive morphological plasticity in response to resource availability, developing a searching phenotype when carbon starved and spatial differentiation when interacting with particulate organic matter. We demonstrate that the adaptive cell biology and associated developmental plasticity considered characteristic of hyphal fungi are shared more widely across the Kingdom Fungi and therefore could be conserved from their most recent common ancestor.

Coccolithus pelagicus subsp. braarudii morphological plasticity as a response to variations in the upwelling regime of the west coast of Iberia

Taxonomy of fossil coccolithophores is based primarily on the heterococcolith life cycle stagemorphology and, at species level, on fine variations in size and shape. Coccolith size is relevant on routine identification of certain calcareous nannofossil species, but morphometry can also be a tool to study their morphological plasticity. Here we used a new morphometric statistical method to reassess Coccolithus pelagicus s. l. data from the Holocene of the west coast of Iberia. Our results suggest that both C. pelagicus subsp. braarudii and C. pelagicus subsp. pelagicus present morphological plasticity in response to (paleo)environmental changes, mainly variations in the upwelling regime in the west coast of Portugal and (paleo)oceanographic conditions in the North Atlantic linked to glacial periods of the Holocene.

Corticosterone mediated functional and structural plasticity in corticotropin-releasing hormone neurons

Corticosteroid stress hormones drive a multitude of adaptations in the brain. Hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neurons control the circulating levels of corticosteroid stress hormones in the body and are themselves highly sensitive to corticosteroids. CRH neurons have been shown to undergo various adaptions in response to acute stress hormone elevations. However, their structural and physiological changes under chronically elevated corticosterone are less clear. To address this, we determined the structural and functional changes in CRH neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus following 14 days of corticosterone treatment. We find that prolonged corticosterone elevation reduces CRH neuron intrinsic excitability as measured by summation of subthreshold postsynaptic depolarisations and spiking output. We find that under normal conditions, CRH neurons have a relatively compact and simple dendritic arbor, with a low density of somatic and dendritic spines. Interestingly, the axon originated from a proximal dendrite close to the soma in approximately half of the CRH neurons reconstructed. While prolonged elevation in corticosterone levels did not result in any changes to gross dendritic morphology, it induced a significant reduction in both somatic and dendritic spine density. Together these data reveal the morphological features of hypothalamic CRH neurons and highlight their capacity to undergo functional and morphological plasticity in response to chronic corticosterone elevations.This article is part of the Special Issue entitled ‘Hypothalamic Control of Homeostasis’.

Mapping GABA and glutamate inputs to gonadotrophin-releasing hormone neurones in male and female mice.

Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurone function is dependent upon gonadal steroid hormone feedback, which is communicated in large part through an afferent neuronal network. The classical neurotransmitters GABA and glutamate are important regulators of GnRH neurone activity and are implicated in mediating feedback signals. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether GABAergic or glutamatergic input to GnRH neurones differs between males and females and/or exhibits morphological plasticity in response to steroid hormone feedback in females. Tissue collected from GnRH-green fluorescent protein (GFP) male and female mice in dioestrus underwent immunofluorescence labelling of GFP and either the vesicular GABA transporter (VGAT) or the vesicular glutamate transporter 2 (VGLUT2). No differences in the densities or absolute numbers of VGAT-immunoreactive (-IR) or VGLUT2-IR puncta apposed to GnRH neurones were identified between males and females. The most significant input from either neurotransmitter was to the proximal dendritic region and 80% of VGAT-IR puncta apposed to GnRH neurones co-localised with synaptophysin. Putative inputs were also assessed in ovariectomised (OVX) female mice treated with negative (OVX+E) or positive (OVX+E+E) feedback levels of oestrogen, and OVX+E+E mice were killed during the expected GnRH/luteinising hormone surge. No differences in VGLUT2-IR contacts to GnRH neurones were identified between animals under the negative-feedback influence of oestrogen (OVX+E) or the positive influence of oestrogen (OVX+E+E), regardless of cFos activation status. By contrast, a significant elevation in putative GABAergic inputs to GnRH neurones at the time of the preovulatory surge was found in the cFos-negative subset of GnRH neurones, both at the level of the soma and at the proximal dendrite. Taken together, these data suggest that, although GABAergic and glutamatergic innervation of GnRH neurones is not sexually differentiated, cyclic fluctuations in steroid hormone feedback over the female oestrous cycle result in plastic changes in GABAergic inputs to a subpopulation of GnRH neurones.

Continuous root xylem formation and vascular acclimation to water deficit involves endodermal ABA signalling via miR165.

The plant root xylem comprises a specialized tissue for water distribution to the shoot. Despite its importance, its potential morphological plasticity in response to environmental conditions such as limited water availability has not been thoroughly studied. Here, we identify a role for the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) for proper xylem development and describe how ABA signalling-mediated effects on core developmental regulators are employed to alter xylem morphology under limited water availability in Arabidopsis Plants with impaired ABA biosynthesis and reduced ABA signalling in the cell layer surrounding the vasculature displayed defects in xylem continuity, suggesting that non-cell autonomous ABA signalling is required for proper xylem development. Conversely, upon external ABA application or under limited water availability, extra xylem strands were formed. The observed xylem developmental alterations were dependent on adequate endodermal ABA signalling, which activated MIR165A. This resulted in increased miR165 levels that repress class III HD-ZIP transcription factors in the stele. We conclude that a pathway known to control core developmental features is employed as a means of modifying plant xylem morphology under conditions of environmental stress.

Morphological plasticity in response to population density varies with soil conditions and growth stage in Abutilon theophrasti (Malvaceae)

The complexity of plant response to density in nature has been recognized, but seldom interpreted, especially in the context of various abiotic environments or plant ontogeny. Our objective was to investigate whether and how soil conditions and plant growth stage affected plant responses to density in a variety of traits under field conditions. Abutilon theophrasti (annual species) was planted at low, medium, and high densities (13.4, 36, and 121 plants m−2, respectively) under good or poor soil conditions and harvested 30, 50, or 70 days after seedling emergence. Responses of many traits to density varied with soil conditions and growth stages. Initially, leaf size, petiole angle, and stem diameter were decreased by high density in good soil, but not in poor soil. After 50 days, high density induced extra stem elongation and stem mass increment in both soil conditions; this was at the cost of biomass allocated to other organs in good soil. In contrast, in poor soil, high density decreased more morphological traits, with less effects on allocation patterns. At 70 days, there were decreases in more traits in response to density in poor soil, whereas most traits remained stable in good soil. Results demonstrated that density–plasticity was inherently complex, including multiple responsive trends within and among traits, and revealed that the ability of the plants to adapt to variation in density via responses of various modular traits has been underestimated. Soil conditions and growth stage may affect these responses, either directly through effects on plant size and competition strength, or indirectly through effects on strength of stem response. Contrasting stage-dependent plasticity to density under two soil conditions also revealed different growth strategies of plants in dealing with biotic environmental challenges. These findings highlighted the importance of considering roles of abiotic environmental factors and growth stage in modulating plasticity to biotic environments.

Canopy gradients in leaf functional traits for species that differ in growth strategies and shade tolerance

In temperate deciduous forests, vertical gradients in leaf mass per area (LMA) and area-based leaf nitrogen (Narea) are strongly controlled by gradients in light availability. While there is evidence that hydrostatic constraints on leaf development may diminish LMA and Narea responses to light, inherent differences among tree species may also influence leaf developmental and morphological response to light. We investigated vertical gradients in LMA, Narea and leaf carbon isotope composition (δ13C) for three temperate deciduous species (Carpinus caroliniana Walter, Fagus grandifolia Ehrh., Liriodendron tulipifera L.) that differed in growth strategy (e.g., indeterminate and determinate growth), shade tolerance and leaf area to sapwood ratio (Al:As). Leaves were sampled across a broad range of light conditions within three vertical layers of tree crowns to maximize variation in light availability at each height and to minimize collinearity between light and height. All species displayed similar responses to light with respect to Narea and δ13C, but not for LMA. Light was more important for gradients in LMA for the shade-tolerant (C. caroliniana) and -intolerant (L. tulipifera) species with indeterminate growth, and height (e.g., hydrostatic gradients) and light were equally important for the shade-tolerant (F. grandifolia) species with determinate growth. Fagus grandifolia had a higher morphological plasticity in response to light, which may offer a competitive advantage in occupying a broader range of light conditions throughout the canopy. Differences in responses to light and height for the taller tree species, L. tulipifera and F. grandifolia, may be attributed to differences in growth strategy or Al:As, which may alter morphological and functional responses to light availability. While height was important in F. grandifolia, height was no more robust in predicting LMA than light in any of the species, confirming the strong role of light availability in determining LMA for temperate deciduous species.

The effects of global dimming on the wheat crop grown in the Yangtze Basin of China simulated by SUCROS_LL, a process-based model

Low light spell, one of the major causes of reduction in global radiation (global dimming), has become a new challenge to crop production. For assessing impacts of low light spells on wheat yield, we proposed a low light index (LLI) and quantified the effects of low light spell conditions occurring at different development stages on five key crop parameters of wheat (leaf photosynthetic capacity, photosynthetic initial light-use efficiency, specific leaf area, dry matter partitioning index for green leaf and harvest index) as functions of LLI using data from field experiments with different levels (50%, 66% and 84% of reduction in incident radiation from ambient) and durations (2d, 4d, 6d and 8d) of shading treatments. These functions were then incorporated into the generic process-based crop growth model SUCROS97 to develop a model, called SUCROS_LL hereafter, for assessing potential yield loss of wheat caused by low light spells. SUCROS_LL was validated and tested using independent data from field shading experiments and 19 agro-meteorological experimental stations, and then used for assessing the potential yield loss of wheat caused by low light spells in the Middle-Lower Reaches of Yangtze River Basin during 1961–2010. Our field experimental data showed that responses of wheat parameters and yield to low light depended on not only LLI, but also the development stages. Plant adaptive responses cannot fully mitigate the negative effects of short-term substantial reduction in incident radiation on wheat crop yield. Compared with SUCROS97, SUCROS_LL significantly improved prediction accuracy of wheat yield by 37% under field shading experimental conditions and 29% under natural low light spell conditions at the 19 agro-meteorological experimental stations. The simulated potential yield loss of wheat caused by low light spells averaged over 1961–2010 increased from the North (below 10%) to the South (above 40%) in the studied region. Potential yield loss averaged over the whole studied region was estimated to increase from the 1960s to the 1990s by 2.9% per decade, but decrease in the 2000s by 9.1% per decade. Although potential wheat yield loss caused by low light spells has been decreased in the past decade in the studied region, the trends of global dimming suggests that breeding/choice of cultivars with better morphological plasticity in response to light availability is in need to mitigate the negative effects of reduction in incident radiation on wheat growth and yield.

MDia2 and CXCL12/CXCR4 chemokine signaling intersect to drive tumor cell amoeboid morphological transitions

Morphological plasticity in response to environmental cues in migrating cancer cells requires F-actin cytoskeletal rearrangements. Conserved formin family proteins play critical roles in cell shape, tumor cell motility, invasion and metastasis, in part, through assembly of non-branched actin filaments. Diaphanous-related formin-2 (mDia2/Diaph3/Drf3/Dia) regulates mesenchymal-to-amoeboid morphological conversions and non-apoptotic blebbing in tumor cells by interacting with its inhibitor diaphanous-interacting protein (DIP), and disrupting cortical F-actin assembly and bundling. F-actin disruption is initiated by a CXCL12-dependent mechanism. Downstream CXCL12 signaling partners inducing mDia2-dependent amoeboid conversions remain enigmatic. We found in MDA-MB-231 tumor cells CXCL12 induces DIP and mDia2 interaction in blebs, and engages its receptor CXCR4 to induce RhoA-dependent blebbing. mDia2 and CXCR4 associate in blebs upon CXCL12 stimulation. Both CXCR4 and RhoA are required for CXCL12-induced blebbing. Neither CXCR7 nor other Rho GTPases that activate mDia2 are required for CXCL12-induced blebbing. The Rho Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor (GEF) Net1 is required for CXCL12-driven RhoA activation and subsequent blebbing. These results reveal CXCL12 signaling, through CXCR4, directs a Net1/RhoA/mDia-dependent signaling hub to drive cytoskeleton rearrangements to regulate morphological plasticity in tumor cells. These signaling hubs may be conserved during normal and cancer cells responding to chemotactic cues.

Growth and nutrients accumulation potentials of giant reed (Arundo donax L.) in different habitats in Egypt

ABSTRACTArundo donax L. has a high biomass production and a tendency toward community dominance in many habitats and thereby a tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions. Therefore, the present study investigated the potentiality of A. donax to accumulate nutrients and trace metals in its biomass. Six main habitats (Nile Bank, Drain Bank, Canal Bank, Field Edges, Railways and Roadsides) were recognized. At each habitat, six quadrats (each 1 m2), distributed equally in two sites, were selected for growth measurements (e.g., density, shoot height, diameter, leaf area and biomass), plant and soil analyses. Plants from Nile, Canal and Drain Banks had the highest values of most growth measurements, while those from Railways and Roadsides had the lowest. Canal Bank plants accumulated the highest concentrations of P, Cu and Pb in their leaves; Zn in the stem; and Mg, Cd and Fe in the rhizome. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) of A. donax, for Cd, Fe, Mn and Zn, was greater than 1, while the translocation factor (TF) of most trace metals was less than unity in most habitats. In conclusion, A. donax showed morphological plasticity in response to habitat heterogeneity, and its growth was most vigorous in the riparian habitats. The high BF, as well as the significant positive correlations between trace metals, especially Cd, in soil and plant, renders A. donax a powerful phytoremediator.

Effects of Salt Loading on the Morphology of Astrocytes in the Ventral Glia Limitans of the Rat Supraoptic Nucleus.

In the ventral glial limitans (VGL) of the supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the rat, a unique astrocyte type is found with an ability to undergo striking morphological plasticity in response to a wide range of physiological stimulations such as chronic hypernatraemia. This includes a thinning of the VGL, which contains the somata and proximal processes of these astrocytes, as well as an almost complete withdrawal of their vertically-oriented distal processes. Currently, there is little information available on the types of astrocytes that reside in the SON-VGL and which of these exhibit state-dependent structural plasticity. To address this, we enabled the visualisation of single SON-VGL glia using two novel cell labelling techniques with fluorescence microscopy. First, we used an inducible genetic reporter mouse line that allowed the specific labelling of a low density of astrocytes expressing glutamate and aspartate transporter (GLAST)/excitatory amino acid transporter 1. This approach revealed a high degree of variability in the morphology of mouse SON-VGL astrocytes, in contrast to what has been reported for cortical astrocytes. Next, we used the DiOlistlic labelling approach to label single glial cells with DiI in the SON-VGL of rats. Astrocytes observed using this approach shared the morphological features of GLAST-expressing astrocytes in the mouse SON-VGL. Specific structural aspects of these cells were modified by chronic hypernatraemia achieved by 7-day salt loading. Notably, the average area of cells exhibiting protoplasmic features was significantly reduced in the horizontal plane, and the size of varicosities present on fibrous projections was significantly enlarged. These observations indicate that novel cell labelling methods can significantly advance our understanding of SON-VGL cells and reveal specific forms of morphological plasticity that can be driven by chronic hypernatraemia.

Acute changes in whole body corticosterone in response to perceived predation risk: A mechanism for anti-predator behavior in anurans?

Anuran larvae exhibit behavioral and morphological plasticity in response to perceived predation risk, although response type and magnitude varies through ontogeny. Increased baseline corticosterone is related to morphological response to predation risk, whereas the mechanism behind behavioral plasticity remains enigmatic. Since tadpoles alter behavioral responses to risk immediately upon exposure to predator cues, we characterized changes in whole body corticosterone at an acute (<1h post-exposure) timescale. Tadpoles (Lithobates sylvaticus) at Gosner stage (GS) 25 (free-swimming, feeding larvae) increased corticosterone levels to a peak at 10–20min post-exposure to predator cues, paralleling the acute stress response observed among other taxa. Tadpoles reared for 3weeks (mean GS29) with predation risk (caged, fed Aeshnid dragonfly nymph) had lower corticosterone levels at 10–20min post-exposure to dragonfly cues than predator-naïve controls, suggesting habituation, although the magnitude of increase was markedly diminished when compared to younger tadpoles (GS25). These experiments represent the first assessment of tadpole hormonal responses to predation risk at the acute timescale. Further research is required to establish causality between hormonal responses and behavioral changes, and to examine how and why responsiveness changes over ontogeny and with chronic exposure to risk.

Contrasting Effects of Long-Term Grazing and Clipping on Plant Morphological Plasticity: Evidence from a Rhizomatous Grass.

Understanding the mechanism of plant morphological plasticity in response to grazing and clipping of semiarid grassland can provide insight into the process of disturbance-induced decline in grassland productivity. In recent studies there has been controversy regarding two hypotheses: 1) grazing avoidance; and 2) growth limiting mechanisms of morphological plasticity in response to defoliation. However, the experimental evidence presented for the memory response to grazing and clipping of plants has been poorly reported. This paper reports on two experiments that tested these hypotheses in field and in a controlled environment, respectively. We examined the effects of long-term clipping and grazing on the functional traits and their plasticity for Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvelev (the dominate species) in the typical-steppe grassland of Inner Mongolia, China. There were four main findings from these experiments. (i) The majority of phenotypic traits of L. chinensis tended to significantly miniaturize in response to long-term field clipping and grazing. (ii) The significant response of morphological plasticity with and without grazing was maintained in a hydroponic experiment designed to remove environmental variability, but there was no significant difference in L. chinensis individual size traits for the clipping comparison. (iii) Plasticity indexes of L. chinensis traits in a controlled environment were significantly lower than under field conditions indicating that plants had partial and slight memory effect to long-term grazing. (iv) The allometry of various phenotypic traits, indicated significant trade-offs between leaf and stem allocation with variations in plant size induced by defoliation, which were maintained only under grazing in the hydroponic controlled environment experiment. Taken together, our findings suggest that the morphological plasticity of L. chinensis induced by artificial clipping was different with that by livestock grazing. The miniaturization of plant size in long-term grazed grassland may reflect retained characteristics of dwarf memory for adaptation to long-term grazing by large herbivores.

High water level impedes the adaptation of Polygonum hydropiper to deep burial: responses of biomass allocation and root morphology.

Many studies have investigated the individual effects of sedimentation or inundation on the performance of wetland plants, but few have examined the combined influence of these processes. Wetland plants might show greater morphological plasticity in response to inundation than to sedimentation when these processes occur simultaneously since inundation can negate the negative effects of burial on plant growth. Here, we evaluate this hypothesis by assessing growth of the emergent macrophyte Polygonum hydropiper under flooding (0 and 40 cm) and sedimentation (0, 5, and 10 cm), separately and in combination. Deep burial and high water level each led to low oxidation-reduction potential, biomass (except for 5-cm burial), and growth of thick, short roots. These characteristics were generally more significant under high water level than under deep burial conditions. More biomass was allocated to stems in the deep burial treatments, but more to leaves in the high water level treatments. Additionally, biomass accumulation was lower and leaf mass ratio was higher in the 40-cm water level + 10-cm burial depth treatment than both separate effects. Our data indicate that inundation plays a more important role than sedimentation in determining plant morphology, suggesting hierarchical effects of environmental stressors on plant growth.

Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) larvae alter morphological but not chemical defenses in response to predator cues

Prey traits are often modified in response to exposure to predators, a phenomenon known as predator-induced phenotypic plasticity. Morphological plasticity in response to predator cues is well documented in amphibians; however, predator-induced chemical defenses have received relatively little attention. The Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens (Rafinesque, 1820)), which possesses tetrodotoxin—a toxin for chemical defense, is most vulnerable to predation during its larval stage. We assessed whether exposing Eastern Newt larvae to predator scent cues (from dragonfly larvae) would elicit change in their morphological and chemical defenses. Newt larvae exposed to scent cues of predatory dragonfly larvae exhibited significantly greater tail depths, which should increase survival of attempted predation by allowing them to swim faster, but did not differ in mass, snout–vent length, or tail length. Toxin concentrations in newt larvae were not significantly affected by exposure to these predator cues. Larval toxicity may be derived maternally or environmentally and is inflexible, or induced toxicity may only be detectable later in development. Predator-induced phenotypic plasticity, especially of chemical defenses, warrants greater attention, as potentially important outcomes of species interactions remain unclear.
