Persistent ATP‐Concentration Gradients in a Hydrogel Sustained by Chemical Fuel Consumption

AbstractWe show the formation of macroscopic ATP‐concentrations in an agarose gel and demonstrate that these gradients can be sustained in time at the expense of the consumption of a chemical fuel. The approach relies on the spatially controlled activation of ATP‐producing and ATP‐consuming reactions through the local injection of enzymes in the matrix. The reaction‐diffusion system is maintained in a stationary non‐equilibrium state as long as chemical fuel, phosphocreatine, is present. The reaction‐diffusion system is coupled to a supramolecular system composed of monolayer protected gold nanoparticles and a fluorescent probe. As a result of this coupling, fluorescence signals emerge spontaneously in response to the ATP‐concentration gradients. We show that the approach permits the rational formation of complex fluorescence patterns that change over time as a function of the evolution of the ATP‐concentrations present in the system.

Spotting Local Environments in Self-Assembled Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles.

Organic-inorganic (O-I) nanomaterials are versatile platforms for an incredible high number of applications, ranging from heterogeneous catalysis to molecular sensing, cell targeting, imaging, and cancer diagnosis and therapy, just to name a few. Much of their potential stems from the unique control of organic environments around inorganic sites within a single O-I nanomaterial, which allows for new properties that were inaccessible using purely organic or inorganic materials. Structural and mechanistic characterization plays a key role in understanding and rationally designing such hybrid nanoconstructs. Here, we introduce a general methodology to identify and classify local (supra)molecular environments in an archetypal class of O-I nanomaterials, i.e., self-assembled monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles (SAM-AuNPs). By using an atomistic machine-learning guided workflow based on the Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) descriptor, we analyze a collection of chemically different SAM-AuNPs and detect and compare local environments in a way that is agnostic and automated, i.e., with no need of a priori information and minimal user intervention. In addition, the computational results coupled with experimental electron spin resonance measurements prove that is possible to have more than one local environment inside SAMs, being the thickness of the organic shell and solvation primary factors in the determining number and nature of multiple coexisting environments. These indications are extended to complex mixed hydrophilic-hydrophobic SAMs. This work demonstrates that it is possible to spot and compare local molecular environments in SAM-AuNPs exploiting atomistic machine-learning approaches, establishes ground rules to control them, and holds the potential for the rational design of O-I nanomaterials instructed from data.

Self-organized nanoreceptors-based fluorescent probe for quantitative detection of denatured glutathione

Though a number of protocols have been developed for the detection of glutathione (GSH), insufficient attention has been paid to the quantitative discrimination of the denaturation of GSH. In this study, monolayer protected gold nanoparticles (MPGN) featured with cationic trimethylammonium headgroups were elaborately designed as self-organized nanoreceptors. Taken 1-pyrenesulfonic acid sodium salt as indicator, of which the fluorescence can be completely quenched through the binding with MPGN and recovered by the presence of GSH, the detection of GSH can be achieved. Moreover, due to the dominating role of thiol group played in the GSH discrimination process, the GSH/GSSG (glutathione disulfide) ratio can be quantitatively analyzed through the fluorescence response. The facile methodology presented herein will provide instructive direction for the evaluation of GSH based pharmaceuticals.

Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles Functionalized with Halogen Bonding Capability─An Avenue for Molecular Detection Schemes.

The use of functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) and their aggregation in the presence of a targeted analyte is a well-established molecular detection strategy predicated on harnessing specific molecular interactions to the NP periphery. Molecules able to specifically interact with the functionalized NPs alter the unique optical and electrochemical properties of the NPs as a function of interparticle spacing. While many intermolecular interactions have been successfully exploited in this manner in conjunction with aqueous NP systems, the use of non-aqueous NPs in the same capacity is significantly less explored. A fundamental interaction that has not been previously investigated in NP schemes is halogen bonding (XB). XB is an orthogonal, electrostatic interaction between a region of positive electrostatic potential (δ+) on a halogen atom (i.e., XB donor) and a negative (δ-) Lewis base (XB acceptor) molecule. To couple XB with NP systems, ligands featuring a molecular structure that promotes XB interactions need to be identified, optimized, and synthesized for subsequent attachment to NPs. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) and NMR techniques are used to identify a strong XB-donor moiety (-C6F4I) and a synthetic scheme for a thiolate ligand featuring that functionality is devised and executed with high purity/yield (78%). Ligand-exchange reactions allow functionalization of non-aqueous alkanethiolate-protected gold NPs or monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) with the XB-donor ligands. Functionalized MPCs (f-MPCs), within both assembled films and in solution, are shown to engage in XB interactions with target XB-acceptor molecules. Molecular recognition events, including induced aggregation of the f-MPCs, are characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, TEM imaging, and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy NMR with limits of detection of 50-100 nM for strong XB acceptors. While fundamental exploration of XB interactions is ongoing, this study represents a step toward utilizing XB within molecular detection schemes, an application with implications for supramolecular chemistry, forensic, and environmental chemical sensing.

Predicting the Physicochemical Properties and Biological Activities of Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles Using Simulation-Derived Descriptors.

Gold nanoparticles are versatile materials for biological applications because their properties can be modulated by assembling ligands on their surface to form monolayers. However, the physicochemical properties and behaviors of monolayer-protected nanoparticles in biological environments are difficult to anticipate because they emerge from the interplay of ligand-ligand and ligand-solvent interactions that cannot be readily inferred from ligand chemical structure alone. In this work, we demonstrate that quantitative nanostructure-activity relationship (QNAR) models can employ descriptors calculated from molecular dynamics simulations to predict nanoparticle properties and cellular uptake. We performed atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of 154 monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles and calculated a small library of simulation-derived descriptors that capture nanoparticle structural and chemical properties in aqueous solution. We then parametrized QNAR models using interpretable regression algorithms to predict experimental measurements of nanoparticle octanol-water partition coefficients, zeta potentials, and cellular uptake obtained from a curated database. These models reveal that simulation-derived descriptors can accurately predict experimental trends and provide physical insight into what descriptors are most important for obtaining desired nanoparticle properties or behaviors in biological environments. Finally, we demonstrate model generalizability by predicting cell uptake trends for 12 nanoparticles not included in the original data set. These results demonstrate that QNAR models parametrized with simulation-derived descriptors are accurate, generalizable computational tools that could be used to guide the design of monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles for biological applications without laborious trial-and-error experimentation.

Role of Ionic Strength in the Formation of Stable Supramolecular Nanoparticle-Protein Conjugates for Biosensing.

Monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) exhibit distinct physical and chemical properties depending on the nature of the ligand chemistry. A commonly employed NP monolayer comprises hydrophobic molecules linked to a shell of PEG and terminated with functional end group, which can be charged or neutral. Different layers of the ligand shell can also interact in different manners with proteins, expanding the range of possible applications of these inorganic nanoparticles. AuNP-fluorescent Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) conjugates are gaining increasing attention in sensing applications. Experimentally, their stability is observed to be maintained at low ionic strength conditions, but not at physiologically relevant conditions of higher ionic strength, limiting their applications in the field of biosensors. While a significant amount of fundamental work has been done to quantify electrostatic interactions of colloidal nanoparticle at the nanoscale, a theoretical description of the ion distribution around AuNPs still remains relatively unexplored. We perform extensive atomistic simulations of two oppositely charged monolayer-protected AuNPs interacting with fluorescent supercharged GFPs co-engineered to have complementary charges. These simulations were run at different ionic strengths to disclose the role of the ionic environment on AuNP–GFP binding. The results highlight the capability of both AuNPs to intercalate ions and water molecules within the gold–sulfur inner shell and the different tendency of ligands to bend inward allowing the protein to bind not only with the terminal ligands but also the hydrophobic alkyl chains. Different binding stability is observed in the two investigated cases as a function of the ligand chemistry.

Thiolate end-group regulates ligand arrangement, hydration and affinity for small compounds in monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles

The ability to control the properties of monolayer protected gold nanoparticles (MPNPs) discloses unrevealed features stemming from collective properties of the ligands forming the monolayer and presents opportunities to design new materials. To date, the influence of ligand end-group size and capacity to form hydrogen bonds on structure and hydration of small MPNPs (<5 nm) has been poorly studied. Here, we show that both features determine ligands order, solvent accessibility, capacity to host hydrophobic compounds and interfacial properties of MPNPs. The polarity perceived by a radical probe and its binding constant with the monolayer investigated by electron spin resonance is rationalized by molecular dynamics simulations, which suggest that larger space-filling groups – trimethylammonium, zwitterionic and short polyethylene glycol – favor a radial organization of the thiolates, whereas smaller groups – as sulfonate – promote the formation of bundles. Zwitterionic ligands create a surface network of hydrogen bonds, which affects nanoparticle hydrophobicity and maximize the partition equilibrium constant of the probe. This study discloses the role of the chemistry of the end-group on monolayer features with effects that span from molecular- to nano-scale and opens the door to a shift in the conception of new MPNPs exploiting the end-group as a novel design motif.

The Interplay of Ligand Properties and Core Size Dictates the Hydrophobicity of Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles.

The hydrophobicity of monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles is a crucial design parameter that influences self-assembly, preferential binding to proteins and membranes, and other nano-bio interactions. Predicting the effects of monolayer components on nanoparticle hydrophobicity is challenging due to the nonadditive, cooperative perturbations to interfacial water structure that dictate hydrophobicity at the nanoscale. In this work, we quantify nanoparticle hydrophobicity by using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to calculate local hydration free energies at the nanoparticle-water interface. The simulations reveal that the hydrophobicity of large gold nanoparticles is determined primarily by ligand end group chemistry, as expected. However, for small gold nanoparticles, long alkanethiol ligands interact to form anisotropic bundles that lead to substantial spatial variations in hydrophobicity even for homogeneous monolayer compositions. We further show that nanoparticle hydrophobicity is modulated by changing the ligand structure, ligand chemistry, and gold core size, emphasizing that single-ligand properties alone are insufficient to characterize hydrophobicity. Finally, we illustrate that hydration free energy measurements correlate with the preferential binding of propane as a representative hydrophobic probe molecule. Together, these results show that both physical and chemical properties influence the hydrophobicity of small nanoparticles and must be considered together when predicting gold nanoparticle interactions with biomolecules.

Selective sensing of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) over adenosine diphosphate (ADP), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and inorganic phosphates with zinc(II)-dipicolylamine-containing gold nanoparticles.

Mixed monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles containing surface-bound triethylene glycol and dipicolylamine groups aggregated in water/methanol, 1 : 2 (v/v) in the presence of nucleotides, if the solution also contained zinc(ii) nitrate to convert the dipicolylamine units into the corresponding zinc complexes. Nanoparticle aggregation could be followed with the naked eye by the colour change of the solution from red to purple followed by nanoparticle precipitation. The sensitivity was highest for adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which could be detected at concentrations >10 μM, and decreased over adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to adenosine monophosphate (AMP), consistent with the typically higher affinity of zinc(ii)-dipicolylamine-derived receptors for higher charged nucleotides. Inorganic sodium diphosphate and triphosphate interfered in the assay by also inducing nanoparticle aggregation. However, while the nucleotide-induced aggregates persisted even at higher analyte concentrations, the nanoparticles that were precipitated with inorganic salts redissolved again when the salt concentration was increased. The thus resulting solutions retained their ability to respond to nucleotides, but they now preferentially responded to AMP. Accordingly, AMP could be sensed selectively at concentrations ≥50 μM in an aqueous environment, even in the presence of other nucleotides and inorganic anions. This work thus introduces a novel approach for the sensing of a nucleotide that is often the most difficult analyte to detect with other assays.

Optical detection of di- and triphosphate anions with mixed monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles containing zinc(II)-dipicolylamine complexes.

Gold nanoparticles covered with a mixture of ligands of which one type contains solubilizing triethylene glycol residues and the other peripheral zinc(II)–dipicolylamine (DPA) complexes allowed the optical detection of hydrogenphosphate, diphosphate, and triphosphate anions in water/methanol 1:2 (v/v). These anions caused the bright red solutions of the nanoparticles to change their color because of nanoparticle aggregation followed by precipitation, whereas halides or oxoanions such as sulfate, nitrate, or carbonate produced no effect. The sensitivity of phosphate sensing depended on the nature of the anion, with diphosphate and triphosphate inducing visual changes at significantly lower concentrations than hydrogenphosphate. In addition, the sensing sensitivity was also affected by the ratio of the ligands on the nanoparticle surface, decreasing as the number of immobilized zinc(II)–dipicolylamine groups increased. A nanoparticle containing a 9:1 ratio of the solubilizing and the anion-binding ligand showed a color change at diphosphate and triphosphate concentrations as low as 10 μmol/L, for example, and precipitated at slightly higher concentrations. Hydrogenphosphate induced a nanoparticle precipitation only at a concentration of ca. 400 μmol/L, at which the precipitates formed in the presence of diphosphates and triphosphates redissolved. A nanoparticle containing fewer binding sites was more sensitive, while increasing the relative number of zinc(II)–dipicolylamine complexes beyond 25% had a negative impact on the limit of detection and the optical response. Transmission electron microscopy provided evidence that the changes of the nanoparticle properties observed in the presence of the phosphates were due to a nanoparticle crosslinking, consistent with the preferred binding mode of zinc(II)–dipicolylamine complexes with phosphate anions which involves binding of the anion between two metal centers. This work thus provided information on how the behavior of mixed monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles is affected by multivalent interactions, at the same time introducing a method to assess whether certain biologically relevant anions are present in an aqueous solution within a specific concentration range.

Computational Insights into the Binding of Monolayer-Capped Gold Nanoparticles onto Amyloid-β Fibrils.

Amyloids-β (Aβ) fibrils are involved in several neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate how monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles interact with Aβ(1-40) and Aβ(1-42) fibrils. Our results show that small gold nanoparticles bind with the external side of amyloid-β fibrils that is involved in the fibrillation process. The binding affinity, studied for both kinds of fibrils as a function of the monolayer composition and the nanoparticle diameter, is modulated by hydrophobic interactions and ligand monolayer conformation. Our findings thus show that monolayer-protected nanoparticles are good candidates to prevent fibril aggregation and secondary nucleation or to deliver drugs to specific fibril regions.

From Monolayer-Protected Gold Cluster to Monolayer-Protected Gold-Sulfide Cluster: Geometrical and Electronic Structure Evolutions of Au60S n (SR)36 (n = 0-12).

Thiolate-monolayer-protected gold clusters are usually formulated as AuNSR[Au(I)-SR]x, where AuN and SR[Au(I)-SR]x (x = 0, 1, 2, ...) are the inner gold core and outer protection motifs, respectively. In this work, we theoretically envision a new family of S-atom-doped thiolate-monolayer-protected gold clusters, namely, Au60Sn(SR)36 (n = 0–12). A distinct feature of Au60Sn(SR)36 nanoclusters (NCs) is that they show a gradual transition from the monolayer-protected metal NC to the SR[Au(I)-(SR)]x oligomer-protected gold-sulfide cluster with the increase of the number of doping S atoms. The possible formation mechanism of the S-atom-doped thiolate-protected gold cluster is investigated, and the size-dependent stability and electronic and optical absorption properties of Au60Sn(SR)36 are explored using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is found that doping of S atom significantly tails the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap and optical absorption properties of thiolate-protected gold cluster, representing a promising way to fabricate new monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles.

Mixed Fluorinated/Hydrogenated Self-Assembled Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles: In Silico and In Vitro Behavior.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) covered with mixtures of immiscible ligands present potentially anisotropic surfaces that can modulate their interactions at complex nano-bio interfaces. Mixed, self-assembled, monolayer (SAM)-protected AuNPs, prepared with incompatible hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon amphiphilic ligands, are used here to probe the molecular basis of surface phase separation and disclose the role of fluorinated ligands on the interaction with lipid model membranes and cells, by integrating in silico and experimental approaches. These results indicate that the presence of fluorinated amphiphilic ligands enhances the membrane binding ability and cellular uptake of gold nanoparticles with respect to those coated only with hydrogenated amphiphilic ligands. For mixed monolayers, computational results suggest that ligand phase separation occurs on the gold surface, and the resulting anisotropy affects the number of contacts and adhesion energies with a membrane bilayer. This reflects in a diverse membrane interaction for NPs with different surface morphologies, as determined by surface plasmon resonance, as well as differential effects on cells, as observed by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Overall, limited changes in monolayer features can significantly affect NP surface interfacial properties, which, in turn, affect the interaction of SAM-AuNPs with cellular membranes and subsequent effects on cells.

The Key Role of Temperature and Lipid Composition in Modulating the Intake of Gold Nanoparticles into the Plasma Membrane

Monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles are emerging as promising candidates for drug delivery due to their ability to permeate through plasma membranes. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of such complex systems is crucial to control cell permeation and to develop efficient biomedical delivery applications based on nanoscale gold nanoparticles. Here, neutron reflectometry (NR) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to shed light on the interaction between cationic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and model lipid membranes and the consequences thereof. Atomistic simulations predicted that there is a free energy barrier that has to be overcome to enforce AuNPs to partition into a DSPC bilayer. NR experiments confirmed the prediction, showing that AuNP encapsulation takes place only at temperatures higher than ∼330 K. Meanwhile, in a mixture of DSPC-DSPG (3:1), experiments showed that the adsorption of AuNPs to the membrane is weak; the nanoparticles were readily released during annealing. Coarse-grained MD simulations used to interpret this behaviour indicated that in this mixture DSPGs migrate around AuNPs, thereby weakening their interaction with the surface and leading to detachment of AuNPs at high temperatures. NR experiments also confirmed this by showing that in the presence of negative lipids (DSPG), desorption of AuNPs is associated with a reduced coverage of the floating bilayer, suggesting that some lipids, which comprise both DSPC and DSPG, are extracted and left the bilayer. Finally, the results indicated that the crowding of lipids over the nanoparticles shields the electrostatic interaction between cationic nanoparticles, thus fostering their aggregation on the membrane surface and driving the membrane composition to be locally asymmetric, causing membrane instability.

Energy landscape for the insertion of amphiphilic nanoparticles into lipid membranes: A computational study.

Amphiphilic, monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles (NPs) have been shown to enter cells via a non-endocytic, non-disruptive pathway that could be valuable for biomedical applications. The same NPs were also found to insert into a series of model cell membranes as a precursor to cellular uptake, but the insertion mechanism remains unclear. Previous simulations have demonstrated that an amphiphilic NP can insert into a single leaflet of a planar lipid bilayer, but in this configuration all charged end groups are localized to one side of the bilayer and it is unknown if further insertion is thermodynamically favorable. Here, we use atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to show that an amphiphilic NP can reach the bilayer midplane non-disruptively if charged ligands iteratively “flip” across the bilayer. Ligand flipping is a favorable process that relaxes bilayer curvature, decreases the nonpolar solvent-accessible surface area of the NP monolayer, and increases attractive ligand-lipid electrostatic interactions. Analysis of end group hydration further indicates that iterative ligand flipping can occur on experimentally relevant timescales. Supported by these results, we present a complete energy landscape for the non-disruptive insertion of amphiphilic NPs into lipid bilayers. These findings will help guide the design of NPs to enhance bilayer insertion and non-endocytic cellular uptake, and also provide physical insight into a possible pathway for the translocation of charged biomacromolecules.

PH-Dependent aggregation and pH-independent cell membrane adhesion of monolayer-protected mixed charged gold nanoparticles.

Design of pH-responsive monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that are mixed charged, with the ability to switch their net surface charge, based on the stimuli of environmental pH is a promising technique in nanomedicine. However, understanding of pH-responsive mixed charged AuNP behavior in terms of their stability and cellular interaction are still limited. In this work, we study the aggregation of pH-responsive AuNPs and their interaction with model lipid bilayers by adopting Martini coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics simulations. The surface of these AuNPs is decorated by both positively and negatively charged ligands. The AuNP is positively charged at low pH values due to protonation of negatively charged ligands. Its net charge is lowered at higher pH by increasing the ratio of deprotonated negatively charged ligands. We find that the AuNPs are severely aggregated at moderate pH value, where each AuNP has an overall neutral charge, whereas they are stable and dispersed at both low and high pH values. Further free energy analysis reveals that the energy barrier at a larger separation distance than the location of the hydrophobic driving force potential well, plays a key role that determines the stability of monolayer-protected AuNPs at different pH values. This energy barrier is dramatically decreased at moderate pH value, leading to severe aggregation of AuNPs. By investigating the interaction between AuNPs and model lipid bilayers, we find that all the AuNPs adhere onto the lipid bilayer, independent of the pH value. Moreover, the lipids present originally in the bilayer are extracted by the AuNPs through a process of protrusion and upward climbing. The extraction of lipids can cause dehydration and disruption of the bilayers when multiple AuNPs are adhered. Free energy analysis reveals that the penetration of AuNPs will induce a dramatic free energy increase because of deformation of the ligands with hydrophilic functional end groups. We have systematically studied the stability of pH-responsive AuNPs and their interactions with lipid bilayers by simulation, which might pave the way for the design of pH-responsive monolayer protected AuNPs for biomedical applications.

Variable Growth and Characterizations of Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles Based on Molar Ratio of Gold and Capping Ligands.

Controlling the size of nanoscale entities is important because many properties of nanomaterials are directly related to the size of the particles. Gold nanoparticles represent classic materials and are of particular interest due to their potential application in a variety of fields. In this study, hexanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles are synthesized via the Brust-Schiffrin method. Synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by various analytical techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. We have varied the molar ratio of gold to the protecting agent (hexanethiol) to discover the effect of gold-to-hexanethiol ligand ratio on the size of gold particles. The clear correlation between particle size and molar ratio is found that the averaged particle size decreases from 4.28 ± 0.83 to 1.54 ± 0.67 nm as the gold-to-ligand molar ratio changes from 1:1 to 1:9. In contrast to a recent report that thiolated gold nanoparticles are under spontaneous disintegration when they are assembled on a gold substrate, our STM experiments proved that these gold nanoparticles can form a stable monolayer or multiple layers on the platinum electrode without observing disintegration within 72 h. Therefore, our STM experiments demonstrate that the disintegration behavior of gold nanoparticles is related to the type of ligands and the nature of substrate materials. In electrochemical experiments, these gold nanoparticles displayed an electrochemical quantized charging effect, making these nanoparticles useful in the device applications such as electrochemical or biological sensors.

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Studies of Tiopronin Gold Nanoparticles Binding With Extracted DNA of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Nanomaterial can interact with biological systems in different way, using their surface functionalities and depending on the particle size, shape, and aggregation .The present work aims to characterize the binding of tiopronin gold nanoparticles with extracted DNA from blood patients with rheumatoid arthritis kinetically and thermodynamically. A total of 19 patients with rheumatoid arthritis attending Baghdad Teaching Hospital / Medical City were included in this study. Tiopronin monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles) were prepared by chemical methods and a partial purification of DNA extracted was preceded using negative ions exchange column chromatography. Characterization of Tio Au NPs binding with DNA was investigated by using TEM,SEM,FTIR,EDX and UV-VIS. techniques.The results indicated that the average size of Tio Au NPs was 48 nm.,and there is a different binding affinity of DNA to tiopronin gold nanoparticles depending on pH. Also the melting temperature of DNA was decreased 5C0 when binding with tiopronin gold nanoparticles. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the reaction was endothermic, less order, and non spontaneous.

Effect of Core Morphology on the Structural Asymmetry of Alkanethiol Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are versatile materials suitable for various biological applications due to their tunable surface properties, but structure–function relationships between specific GNP components and GNP behavior are largely lacking. In this work, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the influence of gold core morphology, size, and ligand length on the structure of uniformly nonpolar alkanethiol monolayer-protected GNPs in water. By use of a generalized system preparation workflow, three gold core models were selected for this study: (1) a uniformly spherical hollow gold core, (2) a spherical gold core cut from a bulk gold lattice, and (3) a faceted gold core obtained from variance-constrained semigrand-canonical simulations.
