Investigation of Nonequilibrium Ionization Plasma during a Giant Flare of UX Arietis Triggered with MAXI and Observed with NICER

We detected a giant X-ray flare from the RS CVn–type binary star UX Ari using the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image on 2020 August 17 and started a series of Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer observations 89 minutes later. For a week, the entire duration of the flare was covered with 32 snapshot observations including the rising phase. The X-ray luminosity reached 2 × 1033 erg s−1, and the entire energy release was ∼1038 erg in the 0.5–8.0 keV band. X-ray spectra characterized by continuum emission with lines of Fe xxv Heα and Fe xxvi Lyα were obtained. We found that the temperature peaks before the flux does, which suggests that the period of plasma formation in the magnetic flare loop was captured. Using the continuum information (temperature, flux, and their delay time), we estimated the flare loop size to be ∼3 × 1011 cm and the peak electron density to be ∼4 × 1010 cm−3. Furthermore, using the line ratio of Fe xxv and Fe xxvi, we investigated any potential indications of deviation from collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE). The X-ray spectra were consistent with CIE plasma throughout the flare, but the possibility of an ionizing plasma away from CIE was not rejected in the flux rising phase.

A comprehensive study of orbital evolution of LMC X-4: existence of a second derivative of the orbital period

ABSTRACT We report here results from pulse arrival time delay analysis of the eclipsing high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsar LMC X-4 using observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, XMM–Newton, NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope ARray), and AstroSat. Combining the orbital parameters determined from these observations with the historical measurements dating back to 1998, we have extended the Tπ/2 epoch history of LMC X-4 by about 4600 binary orbits spanning about 18 yr. We also report mid-eclipse time measurements (Tecl) using data obtained from wide-field X-ray monitors of MAXI-GSC (Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image – Gas Slit Camera) and Swift-BAT (Burst Alert Telescope). Combining the new Tπ/2 and Tecl estimates with all the previously reported values, we have significantly improved the orbital evolution measurement, which indicates that the orbital period is evolving at a time-scale ($P_{\rm orb}/\dot{P}_{\rm orb}$) of about 0.8 Myr. For the first time in an accreting X-ray pulsar system, we confirm the existence of a second derivative of the orbital period, having an evolution time-scale ($\dot{P}_{\mathrm{ orb}}/\ddot{P}_{\mathrm{ orb}}$) of about 55 yr. Detection of a second derivative of the orbital period in LMC X-4 makes its orbital evolution time-scale more uncertain, which may also be true for other HMXBs. Independent solutions for the orbital evolution measurement using the mid-eclipse data and the pulse timing data are consistent with each other, and help us put an upper limit of 0.009 on the eccentricity of the binary system.

Correlated spectral and recurrence variations of Cygnus X-1

ABSTRACT We present results of recurrence analysis of the black hole X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 using combined observations from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer All-sky Monitor and the Japanese Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image aboard the International Space Station. From the time-dependent windowed recurrence plot (RP), we compute 10 recurrence quantities that describe the dynamical behaviour of the source and compare them to the spectral state at each point in time. We identify epochs of state changes corresponding to transitions into highly deterministic or highly stochastic dynamical regimes and their correlation to specific spectral states. We compare k-Nearest Neighbors and Random Forest models for various sizes of the time-dependent RP. The spectral state in Cygnus X-1 can be predicted with greater than 95 per cent accuracy for both types of models explored across a range of RP sizes based solely on the recurrence properties. The primary features from the RP that distinguish between spectral states are the determinism, Shannon entropy, and average line length, all of which are systematically higher in the hard state compared to the soft state. Our results suggest that the hard and soft states of Cygnus X-1 exhibit distinct dynamical variability and the time domain alone can be used for spectral state classification.

Optical and X-ray variations during five outbursts of Aql X-1 in 3.6 yr from 2016

ABSTRACT We analysed optical/X-ray quasi-simultaneous light curves of Aql X-1, obtained by Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, Zwicky Transient Facility, and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope network in about 3.6 yr from 2016, for understanding electromagnetic radiation mechanisms during its outbursts. As a result, we confirmed that five outbursts had detected in the epoch, and that three outbursts underwent the X-ray state transition across Low-Hard, In-Transition, and High-Soft state while remaining two outbursts stayed in the Low-Hard state. We found that the optical spectral energy distribution in the High-Soft state is consistent with a simplified irradiated disc model, and that the optical colour/magnitude variation can be explained by variations in the X-ray luminosity and the disc geometrical thickness.

Accretion Spin-up and a Strong Magnetic Field in the Slow-spinning Be X-Ray Binary MAXI J0655-013

We present Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations of the Be X-ray binary, MAXI J0655−013, in outburst. NuSTAR observed the source once early in the outburst, when spectral analysis yields a bolometric (0.1–100 keV), unabsorbed source luminosity of L bol = 5.6 × 1036 erg s−1, and a second time 54 days later, by which time the luminosity had dropped to L bol = 4 × 1034 erg s−1 after first undergoing a dramatic increase. Timing analysis of the NuSTAR data reveals a neutron star spin period of 1129.09 ± 0.04 s during the first observation, which decreased to 1085 ± 1 s by the time of the second observation, indicating spin-up due to accretion throughout the outburst. Furthermore, during the first NuSTAR observation, we observed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with centroid frequency ν 0 = 89 ± 1 mHz, which exhibited a second harmonic feature. By combining the MAXI and NuSTAR data with pulse period measurements reported by Fermi/GBM, we are able to show that apparent flaring behavior in the MAXI light curve is an artifact introduced by uneven sampling of the pulse profile, which has a large pulsed fraction. Finally, we estimate the magnetic field strength at the neutron star surface via three independent methods, invoking a tentative cyclotron resonance scattering feature at 44 keV, QPO production at the inner edge of the accretion disk, and spin-up via interaction of the neutron star magnetic field with accreting material. Each of these result in a significantly different value. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method and infer that MAXI J0655−013 is likely to have a high surface magnetic field strength, B s > 1013 G.

GRB 221009A: Discovery of an Exceptionally Rare Nearby and Energetic Gamma-Ray Burst

We report the discovery of the unusually bright long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB), GRB 221009A, as observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer Mission. This energetic GRB was located relatively nearby (z = 0.151), allowing for sustained observations of the afterglow. The large X-ray luminosity and low Galactic latitude (b = 4.°3) make GRB 221009A a powerful probe of dust in the Milky Way. Using echo tomography, we map the line-of-sight dust distribution and find evidence for significant column densities at large distances (≳10 kpc). We present analysis of the light curves and spectra at X-ray and UV–optical wavelengths, and find that the X-ray afterglow of GRB 221009A is more than an order of magnitude brighter at T 0 + 4.5 ks than that from any previous GRB observed by Swift. In its rest frame, GRB 221009A is at the high end of the afterglow luminosity distribution, but not uniquely so. In a simulation of randomly generated bursts, only 1 in 104 long GRBs were as energetic as GRB 221009A; such a large E γ,iso implies a narrow jet structure, but the afterglow light curve is inconsistent with simple top-hat jet models. Using the sample of Swift GRBs with redshifts, we estimate that GRBs as energetic and nearby as GRB 221009A occur at a rate of ≲1 per 1000 yr—making this a truly remarkable opportunity unlikely to be repeated in our lifetime.

The study of thermonuclear X-ray bursts in accreting millisecond pulsar MAXI J1816−195 with NuSTAR and NICER

ABSTRACT The millisecond pulsar MAXI J1816−195 was recently discovered in an outburst by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) in 2022 May. We study different properties of the pulsar using data from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations. The unstable burning of accreted material on the surface of neutron stars induces thermonuclear (Type-I) bursts. Several such thermonuclear bursts have been detected by MAXI J1816−195 during its outburst. We investigate the evolution of the burst profiles with flux and energy using NuSTAR and NICER observations. During the NuSTAR observation, a total of four bursts were detected from the source. The duration of each burst is around ∼30 s and the ratio of peak to persistent count rate is ∼26 as seen from the NuSTAR data. The burst profiles are modelled using a sharp linear rise and exponential decay function to determine the burst timing parameters. The burst profiles show a relatively long tail at lower energies. The broad-band time-resolved spectra during the burst periods are successfully modelled with a combination of an absorbed blackbody along with a non-thermal component to account for the persistent emission. From our modelling results, we are able to estimate the maximum apparent emitting area of the blackbody of the neutron star to be ∼12.5 km during the peak of the outburst and the maximum distance to the object to be 8.7 kpc. Our findings for the mass accretion rate and the α factor indicate the stable burning of hydrogen via a hot CNO cycle during the bursts.

INTEGRAL study of MAXI J1535−571, MAXI J1820+070, and MAXI J1348 − 630 outbursts

In black hole X-ray binaries, a nonthermal high-energy component is sometimes detected at energies above 200 keV. The origin of this high-energy component is debated and distinct spectral modelizations can lead to different interpretations. High-energy polarimetry measurements with the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) enable new diagnostics on the physics responsible for the MeV spectral component in black hole X-ray binaries. In this work, we aim to investigate the high-energy behavior of three bright sources discovered by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image: MAXI J1535−571, MAXI J1820+070, and MAXI J1348−630. We took advantage of their brightness to investigate their soft γ-ray (0.1–2 MeV) properties with INTEGRAL. We used both spectral and polarimetric approaches to probe their high-energy emission with the aim of bringing new constraints on the MeV emission in black hole X-ray binaries. We first studied the spectral characteristics of the sources in the 3–2000 keV range using JEM-X, IBIS, and SPI, with a semi-phenomenological description of the data. We then used IBIS as a Compton telescope in order to evaluate the polarization properties of the sources above 300 keV. A high-energy component was detected during the hard-intermediate state and soft-intermediate state of MAXI J1535−571, the low-hard state of MAXI J1820+070, and the low-hard state of MAXI J1348−630. The components detected in MAXI J1820+070 and MAXI J1348 − 630 were polarized with a polarization fraction of 26 ± 9° and > 56% in the 300–1000 keV range, respectively. With no polarization information for MAXI J1535−571, the component detected could either come from the jets or the corona. In the case of MAXI J1820+070, the extrapolation of the synchrotron spectrum measured in the infrared indicates that the component is likely due to a nonthermal distribution of electrons from a hybrid corona. For MAXI J1348−630, the high fraction of polarization points toward a jets origin; however, we cannot formally conclude this without any infrared data giving information on the optically thin part of the synchrotron spectrum.

Confirmation of dust scattering echo around MAXI J1421–613 by Swift observation

MAXIJ1421–613 is an X-ray burster discovered by Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on 9 January 2014 and is considered to be a low-mass X-ray binary. A previous study analyzing follow-up observation data obtained by Suzaku on 31 January to 3 February 2014 reported that an annular emission of ∼3′–9′ radius was found around the transient source. The most plausible origin of the annular emission is a dust scattering echo by the outburst of MAXIJ1421–613. In this paper, we confirm the annular emission by analyzing the data of the Swift follow-up observation which was conducted by the photon counting mode on 18 January 2014. In a radial profile, we found an annular emission at ∼2′.5–4′.5. Its spectrum was well explained by an absorbed power law, and the photon index was higher than that of MAXIJ1421–613 itself by ΔΓ∼2. The flux and radius of the annular emission observed by Swift are explained by dust scattering of the same outburst as is responsible for the annular emission observed by Suzaku. Assuming that the dust layer causing the annular emission found by Swift is located at the same position as the CO cloud in front of MAXIJ1421–613, the distance to the transient source was estimated to be ∼3 kpc, which is consistent with the value estimated by the previous study of Suzaku.

Discovery of a new supergiant fast X-ray transient MAXI J0709−159 associated with the Be star LY Canis Majoris

Abstract We report on the discovery of a new supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT), MAXI J0709−159, and its identification with LY CMa (also known as HD 54786). On 2022 January 25, a new flaring X-ray object, named MAXI J0709−159, was detected by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). Two flaring activities were observed in two scans ∼3 hr apart, where the 2–10 keV flux reached 5 × 10−9 erg cm−2 s−1. During the period, the source exhibited a large spectral change, suggesting that the absorption column density NH increased from 1022 to 1023 cm−2. A NuSTAR follow-up observation on January 29 identified a new X-ray source with a flux of 6 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1 at a position consistent with LY CMa, which has been identified as a B supergiant as well as a Be star, located at a 3 kpc distance. The observed X-ray activity, characterized by short (≲several hours) duration, rapid (≲ a few seconds) variabilities accompanied by spectral changes, and a large luminosity swing (1032–1037 erg s−1), agree with those of SFXTs. On the other hand, optical spectroscopic observations of LY CMa reveal a broad Hα emission line, which may indicate the existence of a Be circumstellar disk. These results suggest that the optical companion, LY CMa, certainly has a complex circumstellar medium including dense clumps.

MAXI and NuSTAR Observations of the Faint X-Ray Transient MAXI J1848-015 in the GLIMPSE-C01 Cluster

Abstract We present the results of Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) monitoring and two Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations of the recently discovered faint X-ray transient MAXI J1848015. Analysis of the MAXI light curve shows that the source underwent a rapid flux increase beginning on 2020 December 20, followed by a rapid decrease in flux after only ∼5 days. NuSTAR observations reveal that the source transitioned from a bright soft state with unabsorbed, bolometric (0.1–100 keV) flux F = 6.9 ± 0.1 × 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1, to a low hard state with flux F = 2.85 ± 0.04 × 10−10 erg cm−2 s−1. Given a distance of 3.3 kpc, inferred via association of the source with the GLIMPSE-C01 cluster, these fluxes correspond to an Eddington fraction of the order of 10−3 for an accreting neutron star (NS) of mass M = 1.4M ⊙, or even lower for a more massive accretor. However, the source spectra exhibit strong relativistic reflection features, indicating the presence of an accretion disk that extends close to the accretor, for which we measure a high spin, a = 0.967 ± 0.013. In addition to a change in flux and spectral shape, we find evidence for other changes between the soft and hard states, including moderate disk truncation with the inner disk radius increasing from R in ≈ 3 R g to R in ≈ 8 R g, narrow Fe emission whose centroid decreases from 6.8 ± 0.1 keV to 6.3 ± 0.1 keV, and an increase in low-frequency (10−3–10−1 Hz) variability. Due to the high spin, we conclude that the source is likely to be a black hole rather than an NS, and we discuss physical interpretations of the low apparent luminosity as well as the narrow Fe emission.

Discovery of Transition from Marginally Stable Burning to Unstable Burning after a Superburst in Aql X-1

Abstract Superbursts are long duration, rare, and extremely energetic thermonuclear explosions of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (NS LMXBs), which are proposed to be due to unstable carbon ignition. We report the superburst properties and consequences from Aql X–1 observed by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, Swift, and Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) on the MJD 59130.7. We found two faint type I X-ray bursts 9.44 days after the superburst with a short recurrence time of 7.6 minutes, which is the most accurate measurement of the quenching time in all NS LMXBs with observed superbursts. We also discovered mHz quasi-periodic oscillations in the frequency range 2.7–11.3 mHz immediately after the superburst, before and after the resumption of the first type I X-ray burst from NICER, Swift, and Insight-HXMT observations. For the first time, we observed the transition from superburst, via marginally stable burning to unstable burning in NS LMXBs. We compared the quenching time and the recurrence time of type I X-ray bursts with simulations.

The RS CVn–type Star GT Mus Shows Most Energetic X-Ray Flares Throughout the 2010s

Abstract We report that the RS CVn–type star GT Mus (HR 4492, HD 101379+HD 101380) was the most active star in the X-ray sky in the last decade in terms of the scale of recurrent energetic flares. We detected 11 flares from GT Mus in 8 yr of observations with the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) from 2009 August to 2017 August. The detected flare peak luminosities were 1–4 × 1033 erg s−1 in the 2.0–20.0 keV band for its distance of 109.6 pc. Our timing analysis showed long durations (τ r + τ d) of 2–6 days with long decay times (τ d) of 1–4 days. The released energies during the decay phases of the flares in the 0.1–100 keV band were in the range of 1–11 × 1038 erg, which are at the upper end of the observed stellar flare. The released energies during the whole duration were in the range of 2–13 × 1038 erg in the same band. We carried out X-ray follow-up observations for one of the 11 flares with the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on 2017 July 18 and found that the flare cooled quasi-statically. On the basis of a quasi-static cooling model, the flare loop length is derived to be 4 × 1012 cm (or 60 R ☉). The electron density is derived to be 1 × 1010 cm−3, which is consistent with the typical value of solar and stellar flares (1010–13 cm−3). The ratio of the cooling timescales between radiative (τ rad) and conductive (τ cond) cooling is estimated to be τ rad ∼ 0.1 τ cond from the temperature; thus, radiative cooling was dominant in this flare.

We present the results of a weekly monitoring of the new black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1631-472 carried out with the MeerKAT radio interferometer, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) instrument, during its 2018-2019 outburst. The source exhibits a number of X-ray states, in particular both high- and low-luminosity hard states bracketed by extended soft states. Radio flaring is observed shortly after a transition from hard/intermediate states to the soft state. This is broadly in agreement with existing empirical models, but its extended duration hints at multiple unresolved flares and/or jet-ISM interactions. In the hard state radio:X-ray plane, the source is revealed to be 'radio quiet' at high luminosities, but to rejoin the `standard' track at lower luminosities, an increasingly commonly-observed pattern of behaviour.

Discovery of the Black Hole X-Ray Binary Transient MAXI J1348–630

Abstract We report the first half-year monitoring of the new Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1348–630, discovered on 2019 January 26 with the Gas Slit Camera on board the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). During the monitoring period, the source exhibited two outburst peaks, where the first peak flux (at T = 14 days from the discovery of T = 0) was ∼4 Crab (2–20 keV) and the second one (at T = 132 days) was ∼0.4 Crab (2–20 keV). The source exhibited distinct spectral transitions between the high/soft and low/hard states and an apparent “q”-shape curve on the hardness-intensity diagram, both of which are well-known characteristics of black hole binaries (BHBs). Compared to other bright black hole transients, MAXI J1348–630 is characterized by its low disk temperature (∼0.75 keV at the maximum) and high peak flux in the high/soft state. The low peak temperature leads to a large innermost radius that is identified as the innermost stable circular orbit, determined by the black hole mass and spin. Assuming the empirical relation between the soft-to-hard transition luminosity (L trans) and the Eddington luminosity (L Edd), L trans/L Edd ≈ 0.02, and a face-on disk around a non-spinning black hole, the source distance and the black hole mass are estimated to be D ≈ 4 kpc and , respectively. The black hole is more massive if the disk is inclined and the black hole is spinning. These results suggest that MAXI J1348–630 may host a relatively massive black hole among the known BHBs in our Galaxy.

Multi-epoch Modeling of TXS 0506+056 and Implications for Long-term High-energy Neutrino Emission

Abstract The IceCube report of a excess of 13 ± 5 neutrino events in the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 in 2014–2015 and the 2017 detection of a high-energy neutrino event, IceCube-170922A, during a gamma-ray flare from the same blazar, have revived the interest in scenarios for neutrino production in blazars. We perform comprehensive analyses on the long-term electromagnetic emission of TXS 0506+056 using optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, and the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We also perform numerical modeling of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in four epochs prior to 2017 with contemporaneous gamma-ray and lower-energy (optical and/or X-ray) data. We find that the multi-epoch SEDs are consistent with a hybrid leptonic scenario, where the gamma-rays are produced in the blazar zone via external inverse Compton scattering of accelerated electrons, and high-energy neutrinos are produced via the photomeson production process of co-accelerated protons. The multi-epoch SEDs can be satisfactorily explained with the same jet parameters and variable external photon density and electron luminosity. Using the maximal neutrino flux derived for each epoch, we put an upper limit of ∼0.4–2 on the muon neutrino number in 10 years of IceCube observations. Our results are consistent with the IceCube-170922A detection, which can be explained as an upper fluctuation from the average neutrino rate expected from the source, but in strong tension with the 2014–2015 neutrino flare.

Diagnostic of the spectral properties of Aquila X-1 by Insight-HXMT snapshots during the early propeller phase

We study the 2018 outburst of Aql X-1 via the monitor of all sky X-ray image (MAXI) data. We show that the outburst starting in February 2018 is a member of short-low class in the frame of outburst duration and the peak count rate although the outburst morphology is slightly different from the other fast-rise-exponential-decay (FRED) type outbursts with a milder rising stage. We study the partial accretion in the weak propeller stage of Aql X-1 via the MAXI data of the 2018 outburst. We report on the spectral analysis of 3 observations of Aquila X-1 obtained by Insight – hard X-ray modulation telescope (Insight-HXMT) during the late decay stage of the 2018 outburst. We discuss that the data taken by Insight-HXMT is just after the transition to the weak propeller stage. Our analysis shows the necessity of a comptonization component to take into account the existence of an electron cloud resulting photons partly up-scattered.

Monitoring the Superorbital Period Variation and Spin Period Evolution of SMC X-1

Abstract The X-ray pulsar SMC X-1 shows a superorbital modulation with an unstable cycle length in the X-ray band. We present its timing behaviors, including the spin, orbital, and superorbital modulations, beyond the end of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer mission. The time-frequency maps derived by the wavelet Z-transform and the Hilbert–Huang transform suggest that a new superorbital period excursion event occurred in ∼MJD 57,100 (2015 March). This indicates that the excursion is recurrent and probably (quasi)periodic. The hardness ratio obtained with the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) suggests increased absorption during the transition from the high to the low state in the superorbital cycle. Compared to the regular epochs, the superorbital profile during the excursion epochs has a shallower and narrower valley, likely caused by a flatter warp. By tracking the spin period evolution with the MAXI Gas Slit Camera in 2–20 keV, we derive an averaged spin-up rate of ν ˙ = 2.515 ( 3 ) × 10 − 11 s−2 during the period between MJD 55,141 (2009 November) and 58,526 (2019 February). We obtain no positive correlation between the spin frequency residual and the superorbital frequency, but a torque change accompanying the superorbital period excursion is possible. We suggest that the accretion torque on the neutron star could be changed by various mechanisms, including the change of mass accretion rate and the warp angle. We update the value of the orbital decay as P ˙ orb / P orb = − 3.380 ( 6 ) × 10 − 6 yr−1. Finally, we reconfirm the detection of the superorbital modulation in the optical band and its coherence in phase with the X-ray modulation.

The 2018 X-Ray and Radio Outburst of Magnetar XTE J1810–197

Abstract We present the earliest X-ray observations of the 2018 outburst of XTE J1810−197, the first outburst since its 2003 discovery as the prototypical transient and radio-emitting anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP). The Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) detected XTE J1810−197 immediately after a November 20–26 visibility gap, contemporaneous with its reactivation as a radio pulsar, first observed on December 8. On December 13 the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) detected X-ray emission up to at least 30 keV, with a spectrum well-characterized by a blackbody plus power-law model with temperature kT = 0.74 ± 0.02 keV and photon index Γ = 4.4 ± 0.2 or by a two-blackbody model with kT = 0.59 ± 0.04 keV and kT = 1.0 ± 0.1 keV, both including an additional power-law component to account for emission above 10 keV, with Γ h = −0.2 ± 1.5 and Γ h = 1.5 ± 0.5, respectively. The latter index is consistent with hard X-ray flux reported for the nontransient magnetars. In the 2–10 keV bandpass, the absorbed flux is 2 × 10−10 erg s−1 cm−2, a factor of 2 greater than the maximum flux extrapolated for the 2003 outburst. The peak of the sinusoidal X-ray pulse lags the radio pulse by ≈0.13 cycles, consistent with their phase relationship during the 2003 outburst. This suggests a stable geometry in which radio emission originates on magnetic field lines containing currents that heat a spot on the neutron star surface. However, a measured energy-dependent phase shift of the pulsed X-rays suggests that all X-ray emitting regions are not precisely coaligned.

Discovery and state transitions of the new Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1535−571

Abstract We report on the detection and subsequent X-ray monitoring of the new Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1535−571 with the Gas Slit Camera onboard Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI/GSC). After the discovery on 2017 September 2, made independently with MAXI and the Swift/BAT, the source brightened gradually, and in a few weeks reached the peak intensity of ∼5 Crab, or ∼1.6 × 10−7 erg cm−2 s−1 in terms of the 2–20 keV flux. On the initial outburst rise, the 2–20 keV MAXI/GSC spectrum was described by a power-law model with a photon index of ≲ 2, while after a hard-to-soft transition, which occurred on September 18, the spectrum required a disk blackbody component in addition. At around the flux peak, the 2–8 keV and 15–50 keV light curves showed quasi-periodic and anti-correlated fluctuations with amplitudes of 10%–20%, on a time scale of ∼1 d. Based on these X-ray properties obtained with the MAXI/GSC, with additional information from the Swift/BAT, we discuss the evolution of the spectral state of this source, and give constraints on its system parameters.
