Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) in Polymers: Effect of Polymer size on the Fluorescence of Low Molecular Weight PEG and PPG.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a fascinating phenomenon where specific molecules exhibit enhanced fluorescence upon aggregation. This unique property has revolutionized the design and development of new fluorescent materials for different applications, from biosensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to biomedical imaging and diagnostics. Researchers are creating sensitive and selective sensing platforms, opening new avenues in material science and engineering by harnessing the potential of AIE. To expand the knowledge in this field, this study explored the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of two polymers, namely polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polypropylene glycol (PPG) of low molecular weight (MW) using fluorescence spectroscopy and absorbance (UV). PEG-300 and PPG-725 were the most fluorescent polymers at UV of the ten investigated. Interestingly, AIE did not correlate linearly with molecular weight (MW), and monobutyl ether substitution in PEG with a similar MW substantially altered its AIE. Furthermore, fluorescence precisely quantified low polymer concentrations in water, and non-aqueous solvents suppressed AIE, suggesting potential for AIE manipulation. These findings enhance our understanding of AIE in polymers, fostering the development of novel materials for applications such as biosensors.

Fluorescence visualization of CO2-responsive phase transfer materials targeting at the heterogeneous interfacial reactions in advanced oxidation of naphthenic acid in wastewater

Treatment of naphthenic acids (NAs) in wastewater is necessary due to its high toxicity and difficult degradation. In the heterogeneous Fenton-like advanced oxidation of organic pollutant system, the insufficient accessibility of oxidizing agent and NAs greatly hamper the reaction efficiency. CO2-responsive phase transfer materials derived from polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based deep eutectic solvents were specific targeted at the immiscible-binary phase system. The NAs oxidative degradation process was optimized including the kinds of catalyst (Molecular weight of PEG, constitute of DESs, and dosage.), temperature, flow rate of CO2, et al. With the help of fluorescence properties of catalyst, the hydrophilic-hydrophobic interaction was visual-monitored and further studied. The amphipathic property of PEG-200/Sodium persulfate/Polyether amine 230 (PEA230) greatly reduced the aqueous/organic phase transfer barrier between sodium persulfate and NAs (up to 84 %), thus accreting oxidation rate. The surface tension decreased from 35.364 mN/m to 28.595 mN/m. To control the reaction rate, the CO2 respond structure of amido played an important role. In addition, the interfacial transfer intermediates and oxidation pathways were also explored by nuclear magnetic resonance, flourier transform infrared spectroscopy, surface tension, and radical inhibition experiments. The mechanism of advanced oxidation of NAs catalyzed by CO2-responsive phase transfer catalyst was proposed, which would made up for the deficiency of the system theory of heterogeneous chemical oxidation of organic pollutants.

Highly permeable membrane based on permax and PEG for air dehumidification

In this work, polyethylene glycol (PEG) with varying molecular weights was incorporated into the water-based polyurethane matrix (Permax232) to prepare Permax/PEG blend membranes for air dehumidification. The physical properties of the prepared membranes were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD and DSC. Furthermore, the influence of PEG molecular weight on the water vapor adsorption and permeability properties of the Permax/PEG blend membranes was investigated. The experimental results showed that blending PEG600 into the Permax232 matrix obtained optimal performance for air dehumidification. The water vapor sorption enthalpy and the permeation activation energy in the membranes were determined. Furthermore, Permax/20PEG600/PAN thin film composite membrane was developed via dip-coating method. The composite membrane showed superior water vapor permeance of 6578 GPU and water vapor/N2 selectivity of 4909 and a satisfactory long-term stability, which had potential industrial application for energy efficient dehumidification.

Enhancing biomarker detection in human serum for lung cancer diagnosis: Aqueous biphasic systems for simultaneous depletion of high-abundance proteins and efficient extraction of CYFRA 21–1

Analysing biomarkers in human serum could be used as an effective and less invasive approach for the diagnosis of lung cancer; however, biomarker detection reliability is highly limited due to matrix effects. Herein, aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) are studied as platforms for human serum pretreatment, allowing the simultaneous depletion of high abundant proteins and biomarker extraction. By using ABS varying the polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecular weight between 400 and 6000 g·mol−1 and adopting phosphate buffer as the other phase-forming component, the depletion of the high abundance serum proteins immunoglobulin G (IgG) and human serum albumin (HSA) is induced at the ABS interphase, through precipitation, forming a three-phase partitioning system (ABS-TPP). Maximum depletion efficiencies of 99 % for IgG and 70 % for HSA were achieved in one step using PEG 1500-based ABS-TPP. On the other hand, lung cancer biomarkers, such as CYFRA 21–1, are extracted to the PEG-rich phase of the same ABS-TPP with recovery yields of 91 %. This work shows that a proper selection of the PEG molecular weight in the ABS composition leads to the efficient depletion of high-abundance proteins and extraction of cancer biomarkers from human serum, in a single step, confirming the potential of ABS for sample pretreatment to improve biomarker analysis.

Method of hyaluronidase immobilization to produce an oral dosage form

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that helps maintain an optimal balance of hyaluronic acid in connective tissue and ensures full tissue regeneration. Currently, hyaluronidase drugs are used in various fields of medicine. Meanwhile, there are no oral preparations based on hyaluronidase on the pharmaceutical market due to its low bioavailability in this method of administration. One of the options to increase enzyme bioavailability is electron-beam pegylation, which involves obtaining drugs with a modified pharmacokinetic profile in the direction of increasing enteral bioavailability, as well as having additional protection from the action of proteolytic enzymes. Aim of the study was using the electron beam pegylation method to obtain a laboratory batch of a preparation based on highly purified hyaluronidase, which can be further used in the development of an oral drug product. Material and methods. Hyaluronidase, which was isolated from bovine testicular hyaluronidase and polyethylene glycols of different molecular weight, was used in the experimental study. Experiments were carried out using a pulsed linear accelerator ILU-10 for enzyme electron beam immobilization on a water-soluble polymer matrix of polyethylene glycol molecules. The formation of hyaluronidase and polyethylene glycols conjugates was confirmed by exclusion chromatography. Results. As a result of accelerated electron irradiation of hyaluronidase and polyethylene glycol of molecular mass 1500 Da conjugates of enzyme and polymer matrix were formed. After electron-beam pegylation, the specific activity of the enzyme was retained. Conclusions. A laboratory batch of prototype pharmaceutical substance based on immobilised hyaluronidase on polyethylene glycol was obtained.

A thermostable ionic liquid-methacrylate-based polymer electrolyte for energy storage application

In recent years, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) incorporating ionic liquids (ILs) have been explored extensively for lithium-ion batteries due to their favourable thermal stability and high ionic conductivity. Gel polymer electrolytes can also improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries by eliminating the flammable organic solvents which are often used in traditional electrolyte systems. Herein, we report an efficient synthesis of a thermostable ionic liquid-methacrylate-based polymer gel electrolyte via a photo-initiated phase separation (PIPS) process in an inert environment. Anionic liquid phase of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMIMTFSI), coupled with a low molecular weight polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME), was combined with a solid phase of bisphenol A ethoxylate dimethacrylate (BEMA) at varying solid to liquid ratios to produce a thermally stable gel electrolyte. The highest ionic conductivity of 1.9 × 10−3 S cm−1 (at 30 °C) was achieved for the electrolyte with a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:3 by weight. The Lithium metal cells utilizing these electrolytes and LiFePO4 as cathode active material exhibited the initial discharge capacity of 144 mAh g−1 with capacity retention of 85 % over 100 cycles in ambient temperature. The thermal stability of the cells was significantly improved upon increasing the EMIMTFSI content. This study illustrates the potential application of the IL-methacrylate gel polymer electrolyte system in enhancing the safety of Li-ion batteries through careful tuning of the composition. Their versatile properties also make them suitable for quasi-solid-state batteries with high energy density and safety.

Polyethylene Glycol Impacts Conformation and Dynamics of Escherichia coli Prolyl-tRNA Synthetase Via Crowding and Confinement Effects.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a flexible, nontoxic polymer commonly used in biological and medical research, and it is generally regarded as biologically inert. PEG molecules of variable sizes are also used as crowding agents to mimic intracellular environments. A recent study with PEG crowders revealed decreased catalytic activity of Escherichia coli prolyl-tRNA synthetase (Ec ProRS), where the smaller molecular weight PEGs had the maximum impact. The molecular mechanism of the crowding effects of PEGs is not clearly understood. PEG may impact protein conformation and dynamics, thus its function. In the present study, the effects of PEG molecules of various molecular weights and concentrations on the conformation and dynamics of Ec ProRS were investigated using a combined experimental and computational approach including intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and atomistic molecular dynamic simulations. Results of the present study suggest that lower molecular weight PEGs in the dilute regime have modest effects on the conformational dynamics of Ec ProRS but impact the catalytic function primarily via the excluded volume effect; they form large clusters blocking the active site pocket. In contrast, the larger molecular weight PEGs in dilute to semidilute regimes have a significant impact on the protein's conformational dynamics; they wrap on the protein surface through noncovalent interactions. Thus, lower-molecular-weight PEG molecules impact protein dynamics and function via crowding effects, whereas larger PEGs induce confinement effects. These results have implications for the development of inhibitors for protein targets in a crowded cellular environment.

Preparation and performance analysis of polyethylene glycol/epoxy resin composite phase change material

It is crucial for their widespread application to develop phase change materials (PCMs) that can be mass-produced and possess high thermal storage capacity and stability. This study uses polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the phase change material and epoxy resin as the matrix to prepare polyethylene glycol/epoxy resin composite phase change materials (EPPCM) by blending and analyzing the effects of PEG's molecular weight and content on EPPCM's performance. The results indicate that PEG and epoxy resin are physically blended without chemical reaction. When the molecular weight of PEG is fixed, the larger the content of PEG, the higher the crystallinity, phase change enthalpy value, and phase change temperature of EPPCM, and the weaker the thermal cyclic stability and mechanical properties. When the content of PEG is fixed, the larger the molecular weight of PEG, the higher the crystallinity, phase change enthalpy value, and phase change temperature of EPPCM, the stronger the thermal cyclic stability, and the weaker the mechanical properties. Using PEG-10000 as the PCM with a PEG to epoxy resin ratio of 1:2.5, the EPPCM shows a phase change exothermic temperature range of 33.4 °C to 45.7 °C, an endothermic temperature range of 54.3 °C to 65.4 °C, a phase change enthalpy of 130.0 J/g, and only 1.56 % mass loss after 30 phase change cycles.

Biodistribution and therapeutic efficacy of a gold nanoparticle-based targeted drug delivery system against pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is characterized by desmoplasia; crosstalk between pancreatic cancer cells (PCCs) and pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs) leads to the deposition of extracellular matrix proteins in the tumor environment resulting in poor vascularity. Targeting either PCCs or PSCs individually has produced mixed results, and there is currently no effective strategy to target both cell types simultaneously. Previously, we demonstrated, through in vitro cell culture experiments, that a specific gold nanoparticle-based nanoformulation containing the anti-EGFR antibody cetuximab (C225) as a targeting agent and gemcitabine as a chemotherapeutic agent effectively targets both PCCs and PSCs simultaneously. Herein, we extend our studies to test the ability of these in vitro tested nano formulations to inhibit tumor growth in an orthotopic co-implantation model of pancreatic cancer in vivo. Orthotopic tumors were established by co-implantation of equal numbers of PCCs and PSCs in the mouse pancreas. Among the various formulations tested, 5 nm gold nanoparticles coated with gemcitabine, cetuximab and poly-ethylene glycol (PEG) of molecular weight 1000 Da, which we named ACGP441000, demonstrated optimal efficacy in inhibiting tumor growth. The current study reveals an opportunity to target PCCs and PSCs simultaneously, by exploiting their overexpression of EGFR as a target, in order to inhibit pancreatic cancer growth.

Green, recyclable and high latent heat form-stable phase change composites supported by cellulose nanofibers for thermal energy management

Efficiently addressing the challenge of leakage is crucial in the advancement of solid-liquid phase change thermal storage composite materials; however, numerous existing preparation methods often entail complexity and high energy consumption. Herein, a straightforward blending approach was adopted to fabricate stable phase change nanocomposites capitalizing on the interaction between TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules. By adjusting the ratio of TOCNF to PEG and the molecular weights of PEG, TOCNF/PEG phase change composites (TPCC) with customizable phase transition temperature (40.3–59.1 °C) and high phase transition latent heat (126.3–172.1 J/g) were obtained. The TPCC of high-loaded PEG (80–95 wt%) ensured a leakage rate of less than 1.7 wt% after 100 heating-cooling cycles. Moreover, TPCC exhibits excellent optical properties with a transmittance of over 90 % at room temperature and up to 96 % after heating. The thermal response analysis of TPCC demonstrates exceptional thermal-induced flexibility and good thermal stability, as well as recyclability and reshaping ability. This study may inspire others to design bio-based phase change composites with potential applications in thermal energy storage and management of smart-energy buildings, photothermal response devices, and waste heat-generating electronics.

Polyethylene glycol hypersensitivity, patient outcomes in a 7-year retrospective study

BackgroundImmediate IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions to polyethylene glycol (PEG) are rare. Our understanding of PEG hypersensitivity is limited. ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical characteristics and investigation outcomes of the largest cohort of patients with PEG allergy reported. MethodsA total of 44 patients investigated for suspected PEG allergy across 4 United Kingdom tertiary allergy centers between October 2013 and December 2020 were studied. Clinical characteristics, index reaction, and approaches to and outcomes of allergy investigations were analyzed. ResultsPEG hypersensitivity was confirmed in 42 of 44 cases. Macrogol laxatives were the most common index drugs reported (23%), followed by depo-medroxyprogesterone (19%), oral penicillin V (10%), and depo-methylprednisolone (10%). In general, 61% experienced grade III anaphylaxis. Intradermal testing (IDT) increased the diagnostic sensitivity from 51% to 85%. Five patients experienced systemic reactions during IDT. Of the 5 patients, 2 were skin prick test positive to a high molecular weight PEG. Three patients with negative skin test results had positive drug provocation test results. Seven patients with PEG allergy reported tolerance to H1-antihistamines containing PEG. Administration of messenger RNA COVID-19 or Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines was tolerated in all 16 patients to whom they were administered. ConclusionPEG hypersensitivity is an uncommon cause of drug-induced anaphylaxis. Four index drugs accounted for two-thirds of the cases, and reactions to these drugs should prompt PEG hypersensitivity investigations. PEG IDT increases diagnostic yield. The role of skin prick test with higher molecular weight PEGs requires further attention. Further studies are required to understand PEG thresholds and PEG equivalent doses of various administration routes. COVID-19 vaccines were tolerated by all exposed.

The preparation of permanent antistatic additive based on poly(ether-b-amide) copolymers and its modification effect on polyamide 6

Abstract Conventional polymers have typically been used in the packaging of various electronic devices; however, due to the inherent electrically insulating properties these materials fail to dissipate static charges. To address this issue, novel poly(ether-b-amide) (PEBA) segmented copolymers consisting of uniform rigid oxalamide and flexible polyethylene glycol (PEG) were synthesized via melt polycondensation. The influence of PEG molecular weight and the spacer length separating two oxalamide units on the condensed structure, mechanical performance, and antistatic properties was systematically investigated. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) demonstrated strongly hydrogen bonded and highly ordered oxalamide hard segments with the degree of ordering between 71 and 85 % even at low levels. Mechanical behavior results showed that segmented copolymers have an obvious yield point, an elastic modulus between 20 and 30 MPa, and strain at break exceeding 2000 %. Meanwhile, such copolymers possessed low surface resistivity, as low as 107 Ω, which is significantly less than that of commercial antistatic additives. The antistatic effect of PEBA on polyamide 6 (PA6) was also investigated, revealing that when the content reached 30 wt%, the surface resistivity of the alloys decreased from 1013 Ω to 1011 Ω and remained stable after 40 days, even after water washing treatment. Overall, these findings illustrate that the newly synthesized PEBA copolymers demonstrate outstanding long-term antistatic properties and provide valuable insights for the development of polyether-based multiblock copolymer antistatic agents.

Investigating and Optimizing Insulin Partitioning with Conjugated Au Nanoparticles in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems Using Response Surface Methodology.

This study investigated the impact of bioconjugation on the partitioning of insulin, a clinically valuable protein, in an aqueous two-phase system. Gold nanoparticles of different sizes were synthesized and conjugated with insulin. Analysis of the conjugated insulin showed that the insulin remains fully active. Conjugated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/insulin) were used in polyethylene glycol (PEG)-dextran aqueous two-phase systems to investigate the effect of pH, PEG and dextran molecular weights, PEG and dextran concentrations, AuNPs/insulin dosage, and nanoparticle size on the partition coefficient. These systems were chosen for their biocompatibility and low toxicity. Response surface methodology with D-optimal design was used to model and optimize these systems and their affected parameters. At the optimum condition of a pH = 8 system containing 21% PEG 4000, 5% dextran 100,000, and 100 IU AuNPs/insulin, the partition coefficient of AuNPs/insulin was found to be 192.96, which is in agreement with the empirical partition coefficient of 189.2. This is significantly higher than the partition coefficient of free insulin in a similar system. This approach could be used to overcome limitations in the feasibility of aqueous two-phase systems for industrial-scale purification of biomolecules and biopharmaceuticals.

Polyethylene glycol regulates the pitch and liquid crystal behavior of cellulose nanocrystal-based photonic crystals

Inspired by iridescent color in natural creations, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) photonic crystals artificially created by nanotechnology have great application prospects due to their potential to control light propagation in the linear and nonlinear regimes. One of the most important development directions of photonic crystals is the diversification of colors, usually by adjusting the pitch. However, few researchers notice the effect of polymer molecular weight and content on pitch regulation and the interaction between polymer and CNC liquid crystals. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used as polymers to regulate the pitch of CNC photonic crystals and investigate the changes in microstructure, crystal structure, thermal properties, and liquid crystal texture of the composites by changing the PEG content and molecular weight. Different photonic crystal construction systems show that when the molecular weight of PEG is 0.4 k, it can be filled between CNCs to regulate the pitch of photonic crystals, while when the molecular weight of PEG is 20 k, it cannot always be filled between CNCs in evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) process due to the depletion interaction, which cannot effectively regulate the pitch. This study reveals the relationship between PEG and CNC liquid crystals, which supports the development of photonic crystals and the pitch regulation.

Effect of a nonionic surfactant and anionic polyelectrolyte binary system on the stability of a calcium and magnesium carbonates dispersion

The effect of sodium polyacrylate, polyethylene glycol of various molecular weights, and their mixtures on the dispersion stability of calcium and magnesium carbonates was studied. It was shown that in the presence of a binary system, the light transmission of the dispersion decreases 1.2–1.5 times, the content of fine fraction particles increases by 1.1–1.3 times compared to the individual components. The stability of the dispersion of carbonates depends on the components ratio in the binary system and their molecular weight. The formation of adsorption solvated layers of polyacrylate and polyethylene glycol molecules at the interphase boundary contributes to an increase in the stability of the carbonate dispersion.

To Assess Drug Delivery System Nanocarrier at Industrial Production: Establishment of Liposomal Surface Using Physicochemical Properties

Liposomes have been reported to be useful nanocarrier, however, there are number of challenges to resolve before they can be optimized for drug delivery. Liposomes are taken up by cell in the reticuloendothelial system (RES). Polyethyleneglycol (PEG) modification on the liposomal membrane forms a fixed aqueous layer and thus prevents uptake by the RES. The physicochemical properties of liposomes that are most commonly evaluated particle size and zeta potential are not sufficient indicator of the passive targeting effect by PEG modification. In contrast, the fixed aqueous layer thickness (FALT) around liposomal surface was clear to be regulated to be the utilized action in the body. It was showed that the FALT value of PEG-modified liposomes containing doxorubicin increased with the increase in the molecular weight of PEG. Furthermore, PEG modification with a combination of high- and low- molecular weight PEGs on liposomal membranes showed in optimal results with respect to FALT and a higher antitumor effect. In addition, we designed and synthesized a novel PEG-lipid, different double arms PEG (DDA-PEG), which consisted of two PEG chains of 500 and 2000 in one molecule to develop more useful PEG-modified liposomes. DDA-PEG was found to have superior antitumor activity and was associated with the prevention of tumor metastasis. Furthermore, we sought to (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) functions as a target ligand of the 67-kDa laminin receptor (67LR), which is expressed on high-grade tumor cells. EGCG-PEG-modified liposome appear to have superior antitumor activity against high 67LR-expressing tumor cells, as the liposomes had dual effects.

Pal power: Demonstration of the functional association of the Helicobacter pylori flagellar motor with peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein (Pal) and its preliminary crystallographic analysis.

The bacterial flagellar motor is a molecular nanomachine, the assembly and regulation of which requires many accessory proteins. Their identity, structure and function are often discovered through characterisation of mutants with impaired motility. Here, we demonstrate the functional association of the Helicobacter pylori peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein (HpPal) with the flagellar motor by analysing the motility phenotype of the ∆pal mutant, and present the results of the preliminary X-ray crystallographic analysis of its globular C-terminal domain HpPal-C. Purified HpPal-C behaved as a dimer in solution. Crystals of HpPal-C were grown by the hanging drop vapour diffusion method using medium molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) Smear as the precipitating agent. The crystals belong to the primitive orthorhombic space group P1 with unit cell parameters a = 50.7, b = 63.0, c = 75.1 Å. X-ray diffraction data were collected to 1.8 Å resolution on the Australian Synchrotron beamline MX2. Calculation of the Matthews coefficient (VM=2.24 Å3/Da) and molecular replacement showed that the asymmetric unit contains two protein subunits. This study is an important step towards elucidation of the non-canonical role of H. pylori Pal in the regulation, or function of, the flagellar motor.

PETR: A novel peristaltic mixed tubular bioreactor simulating human colonic conditions.

A novel bioreactor simulating human colonic conditions for in vitro cultivation of intestinal microbiota is presented. The PEristaltic mixed Tubular bioReactor (PETR) is modular designed and periodically kneaded to simulate intestinal peristalsis. The reactor is introduced, characterized from a bioprocess engineer's perspective and discussed in its ability to mimic colon conditions. PETR provides physiological temperature and appropriate anaerobic conditions, simulates intestinal peristalsis, and has a mean residence time of 32.8 ± 0.8 h comparable to the adult human colon. The single-tube design enables a time-constant and longitudinally progressive pH gradient from 5.5 to 7.0. Using a dialysis liquid containing high molecular weight polyethylene glycol, the integrated dialysis system efficiently absorbs short chain fatty acids (up to 60%) and water (on average 850 mL d-1 ). Cultivation of a typical gut bacterium (Bifidobacterium animalis) was performed to demonstrate the applicability for controlled microbiota cultivation. PETR is unique in combining simulation of the entire colon, peristaltic mixing, dialytic water and metabolite absorption, and a progressive pH gradient in a single-tube design. PETR is a further step to precise replication of colonic conditions in vitro for reliable and reproducible microbiota research, such as studying the effect of food compounds, prebiotics or probiotics, or the development and treatment of infections with enteric pathogens, but also for further medical applications such as drug delivery studies or to study the effect of drugs on and their degradation by the microbiota.

The development of cost-effective, safe, and low-corrosion alkaline aqueous redox flow batteries, such as alkaline zinc-iron flow batteries, has motivated the research of hydrocarbon-based anion exchange membranes. These membranes, characterized by their positively charged functional groups, facilitate the transport of hydroxide anions (OH−) in alkaline environments, rendering them as potential alternatives to conventional proton exchange membranes in emerging alkaline redox flow batteries. Herein, a facilely synthesized anion exchange membrane (AEM) with superior chemical stability in alkaline media and outstanding ion conductivity has been developed for use in an alkaline redox flow battery. The membrane consists of a partially imidazolium substituted poly (vinylbenzyl chloride) polymer matrix and low molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) additive. The membrane provides positively charged polymer backbone with hydroxide anion as counter ions. The additive PEG not only augments membrane flexibility through interaction with the rigid polymer backbone, but also enhances the conductivity through conducting ions by the alkalized-ether functionality. The optimized anion exchange membrane demonstrates better ionic conductivity of 58.2 mS cm−1 and comparable permeability compared with commercially Nafion117 membrane, enabling promoted energy efficiency (83.5 %), coulombic efficiency (99.85 %) and excellent stability (280 cycles with negligible capacity degradation) of a zinc-iron flow battery at 80 mA cm−2.
