Disk Turbulence and Star Formation Regulation in High-z Main-sequence Analog Galaxies

The gas-phase velocity dispersions in disk galaxies, which trace turbulence in the interstellar medium, are observed to increase with lookback time. However, the mechanisms that set this rise in turbulence are observationally poorly constrained. To address this, we combine kiloparsec-scale Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO(3−2) and CO(4−3) with Hubble Space Telescope observations of Hα to characterize the molecular gas and star formation properties of seven local analogs of main-sequence galaxies at z ∼ 1–2, drawn from the DYNAMO sample. Investigating the “molecular gas main sequence” on kiloparsec scales, we find that galaxies in our sample are more gas-rich than local star-forming galaxies at all disk positions. We measure beam-smearing-corrected molecular gas velocity dispersions and relate them to the molecular gas and star formation rate surface densities. Despite being relatively nearby (z ∼ 0.1), DYNAMO galaxies exhibit high velocity dispersions and gas and star formation rate surface densities throughout their disks, when compared to local star-forming samples. Comparing these measurements to predictions from star formation theory, we find very good agreements with the latest feedback-regulated star formation models. However, we find that theories that combine dissipation of gravitational energy from radial gas transport with feedback overestimate the observed molecular gas velocity dispersions.

PHANGS-MeerKAT and MHONGOOSE HI observations of nearby spiral galaxies: Physical drivers of the molecular gas fraction, Rmol

The molecular-to-atomic gas ratio is crucial to our understanding of the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies. We investigated the balance between the atomic (ΣHI) and molecular gas (ΣH2) surface densities in eight nearby star-forming galaxies using new high-quality observations from MeerKAT and ALMA (for H I and CO, respectively). We defined the molecular gas ratio as Rmol = ΣH2/ΣHI and measured how Rmol depends on local conditions in the galaxy disks using multiwavelength observations. We find that, depending on the galaxy, H I is detected at > 3σ out to 20 − 120 kpc in galactocentric radius (rgal). The typical radius at which ΣHI reaches 1 M⊙ pc−2 is rH I ≈ 22 kpc, which corresponds to 1 − 3 times the optical radius (r25). We note that, Rmol correlates best with the dynamical equilibrium pressure, PDE, among potential drivers studied, with a median correlation coefficient of ⟨ρ⟩ = 0.89. Correlations between Rmol and the star formation rate surface density, total gas surface density, stellar surface density, metallicity, and ΣSFR/PDE (a proxy for the combined effect of the UV radiation field and number density) are present but somewhat weaker. Our results also show a direct correlation between PDE and ΣSFR, supporting self-regulation models. Quantitatively, we measured similar scalings as previous works, and attribute the modest differences that we do find to the effect of varying resolution and sensitivity. At rgal ≳ 0.4r25, atomic gas dominates over molecular gas among our studied galaxies, and at the balance of these two gas phases (Rmol = 1), we find that the baryon mass is dominated by stars, with Σ* > 5 Σgas. Our study constitutes an important step in the statistical investigation of how local galaxy properties (stellar mass, star formation rate, or morphology) impact the conversion from atomic to molecular gas in nearby galaxies.

A 260 pc resolution ALMA map of HCN(1–0) in the galaxy NGC 4321

The property of star formation rate (SFR) is tightly connected to the amount of dense gas in molecular clouds. However, it is not fully understood how the relationship between dense molecular gas and star formation varies within galaxies and in different morphological environments. Most previous studies have typically been limited to kiloparsec-scale resolution such that different environments could not be resolved. In this work, we present new ALMA observations of HCN(1−0) at 260 pc scale to test how the amount of dense gas and its ability to form stars varies with environmental properties. Combined with existing CO(2−1) observations from ALMA and Hα from MUSE, we measured the HCN/CO line ratio, a proxy for the dense gas fraction, and SFR/HCN, a proxy for the star formation efficiency of the dense gas. We find a systematic > 1 dex increase (decreases) of HCN/CO (SFR/HCN) towards the centre of the galaxy, and roughly flat trends of these ratios (average variations < 0.3 dex) throughout the disc. While spiral arms, interarm regions, and bar ends show similar HCN/CO and SFR/HCN, on the bar, there is a significantly lower SFR/HCN at a similar HCN/CO. The strong environmental influence on dense gas and star formation in the centre of NGC 4321, suggests either that clouds couple strongly to the surrounding pressure or that HCN emission traces more of the bulk molecular gas that is less efficiently converted into stars. Across the disc, where the ISM pressure is typically low, SFR/HCN is more constant, indicating a decoupling of the clouds from their surrounding environment. The low SFR/HCN on the bar suggests that gas dynamics (e.g. shear and streaming motions) can have a large effect on the efficiency with which dense gas is converted into stars. In addition, we show that HCN/CO is a good predictor of the mean molecular gas surface density at 260 pc scales across environments and physical conditions.

Molecular Gas and the Star-Formation Process on Cloud Scales in Nearby Galaxies

Observations that resolve nearby galaxies into individual regions across multiple phases of the gas–star formation–feedback “matter cycle” have provided a sharp new view of molecular clouds, star-formation efficiencies, timescales for region evolution, and stellar feedback. We synthesize these results, covering aspects relevant to the interpretation of observables, and conclude the following: ▪The observed cloud-scale molecular gas surface density, line width, and internal pressure all reflect the large-scale galactic environment while also appearing mostly consistent with properties of a turbulent medium strongly affected by self-gravity.▪Cloud-scale data allow for statistical inference of both evolutionary and physical timescales. These suggest a period of cloud collapse on the order of the free-fall or turbulent crossing time (∼10–30 Myr) followed by forming massive stars and subsequent rapid (≲5 Myr) gas clearing after the onset of star formation. The star-formation efficiency per free-fall time is well determined over thousands of individual regions at εff ≈ 0.5−0.3 +0.7%.▪The role of stellar feedback is now measured using multiple observational approaches. The net yield is constrained by the requirement to support the vertical weight of the galaxy disk. Meanwhile, the short gas-clearing timescales suggest a large role for presupernova feedback in cloud disruption. This leaves the supernovae free to exert a large influence on the larger galaxy, including stirring turbulence, launching galactic-scale winds, and carving superbubbles.

The properties and kinematics of HCN emission across the closest starburst galaxy NGC 253 observed with ALMA

Context. Investigating molecular gas tracers, such as hydrogen cyanide (HCN), to probe higher densities than CO emission across nearby galaxies remains challenging. This is due to the large observing times required to detect HCN at a high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Although approximate kiloparsec scales of HCN maps are available for tens of galaxies, higher-resolution maps still need to be available. Aims. We aim to study the properties of molecular gas, the contrast in intensity between two tracers that probe different density regimes (the HCN(1–0)/CO(2–1) ratio), and their kinematics across NGC 253, one of the closest starburst galaxies. With its advanced capabilities, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) can map these features at a high resolution across a large field of view and uncover the nature of such dense gas in extragalactic systems. Methods. We present new ALMA Atacama Compact Array and Total Power (ACA+TP) observations of the HCN emission across NGC 253. The observations cover the inner 8.6′ of the galaxy disk at a spatial resolution of 300 pc. Our study examines the distribution and kinematics of the HCN-traced gas and its relationship with the bulk molecular gas traced by CO(2–1). We analyze the integrated intensity and mean velocity of HCN and CO along each line of sight. We also used the SCOUSE software to perform spectral decomposition, which considers each velocity component separately. Results. We find that the denser molecular gas traced by HCN piles up in a ring-like structure at a radius of 2 kpc. The HCN emission is enhanced by two orders of magnitude in the central 2 kpc regions, beyond which its intensity decreases with increasing galactocentric distance. The number of components in the HCN spectra shows a robust environmental dependence, with multiple velocity features across the center and bar. The HCN spectra exhibit multiple velocity features across the center and bar, which shows a robust environmental dependence. We have identified an increase in the HCN/CO ratio in these regions, corresponding to a velocity component likely associated with a molecular outflow. We have also discovered that the ratio between the total infrared luminosity and dense gas mass, which is an indicator of the star formation efficiency of dense gas, is anticorrelated with the molecular gas surface density up to approximately 200 M⊙ pc−2. However, beyond this point, the ratio starts to increase. Conclusions. We argue that using information about spectroscopic features of molecular emission is an important aspect of understanding molecular properties in galaxies.

Do spiral arms enhance star formation efficiency?

Spiral arms, as those of our own Milky Way, are some of the most spectacular features in disc galaxies. It has been argued that star formation should proceed more efficiently in spiral arms as a result of gas compression. Yet, observational studies have so far yielded contradictory results. Here, we examine arm/interarm surface density contrasts at sim 100\,pc resolution in 28 spiral galaxies from the PHANGS survey. We find that the arm AND interarm contrast in stellar mass surface density ($ is very modest, typically a few tens of percent. This is much smaller than the contrasts measured for molecular gas ($ mol $) or star formation rate ($ SFR $) surface density, which typically reach a factor of $ sim 3$. However, $ mol $ and $ SFR $ contrasts show a significant correlation with the enhancement in $ suggesting that the small stellar contrast largely dictates the stronger accumulation of gas and star formation. All these contrasts increase for grand-design spirals compared to multi-armed and flocculent systems (and for galaxies with high stellar mass). The median star formation efficiency (SFE) of the molecular gas is $16$<!PCT!> higher in spiral arms than in interarm regions, with a large scatter, and the contrast increases significantly (median SFE contrast $2.34$) for regions of particularly enhanced stellar contrast ($ contrast $>1.97$). The molecular-to-atomic gas ratio ($ mol atom $) is higher in spiral arms, pointing to a transformation of atomic to molecular gas. As a consequence, the total gas contrast ($ mol atom $) slightly drops compared to $ mol $ (median $4$<!PCT!> lower, working at sim kpc resolution), while the SFE contrast increases when we include atomic gas (median $8$<!PCT!> higher than for $ mol $). The contrasts show important fluctuations with galactocentric radius. We confirm that our results are robust against a number of effects, such as spiral mask width, tracers, resolution, and binning. In conclusion, the boost in the SFE of molecular gas in spiral arms is generally modest or absent, except for locations with exceptionally large stellar contrasts.

The recent star formation histories of nearby galaxies on resolved scales

ABSTRACT Star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies are affected by a variety of factors, both external (field versus cluster/group) and internal [presence of a bar and active galactic nucleus (AGN), morphological type]. In this work, we extend our previous study and apply the $\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$ metric to a sample of 11 nearby galaxies with Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations. Based on a combination of H α and ultraviolet photometry, $\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$ is sensitive to star formation time-scales of ∼5–200 Myr and therefore measures the present-day rate of change in the star formation rate (SFR), dSFR/dt. Within this limited galaxy sample, we do not observe systematic variations between the global value of $\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$ and the presence of an AGN, stellar bar, or group or cluster membership. Within some of the individual galaxies, we, however, observe significant differences in $\langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {5}} \rangle \big / \langle \mathrm{SFR}_{\textnormal {200}} \rangle$ between the arm and interarm regions. In half of the galaxies, the recent SFH of both arm and interarm regions has been very similar. However, in the galaxies with higher bulge-to-total light ratios and earlier morphological type, the SFR is declining more rapidly in the interarm regions. This decline in SFR is not a result of low molecular gas surface density or a decrease in the star formation efficiency, implying that other factors are responsible for this SFR decrease.

Stored in the archives: Uncovering the CN/CO intensity ratio with ALMA in nearby U/LIRGs

ABSTRACT We present an archival Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) study of the cyanide radical (CN) N = 1 − 0/carbon monoxide (CO) J = 1 − 0 intensity ratio in nearby (z < 0.05) ultra-luminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs). We identify 16 U/LIRGs that have been observed in both CN and CO lines at ∼500 pc resolution based on 16 different ALMA projects. We measure the (CN bright)/CO and (CN bright)/(CN faint) intensity ratios at an ensemble of molecular clouds scales (CN bright = CN N = 1 − 0, J = 3/2 − 1/2; CN faint = CN N = 1 − 0, J = 1/2 − 1/2 hyperfine groupings). Our global measured (CN bright)/CO ratios range 0.02–0.15 in LIRGs and 0.08–0.17 in ULIRGs. We attribute the larger spread in LIRGs to the variety of galaxy environments included in our sample. Overall, we find that the (CN bright)/CO ratio is higher in nuclear regions, where the physical and excitation conditions favour increased CN emission relative to the disc regions. 10 out of 11 galaxies which contain well-documented active galactic nuclei show higher ratios in the nucleus compared with the disc. Finally, we measure the median resolved (CN bright)/(CN faint) ratio and use it to estimate the total integrated CN line optical depth in ULIRGs (τ ∼ 0.96) and LIRGs (τ ∼ 0.23). The optical depth difference is likely due to the higher molecular gas surface densities found in the more compact ULIRG systems.

VERTICO. VII. Environmental Quenching Caused by the Suppression of Molecular Gas Content and Star Formation Efficiency in Virgo Cluster Galaxies

We study how environment regulates the star formation cycle of 33 Virgo Cluster satellite galaxies on 720 pc scales. We present the resolved star-forming main sequence for cluster galaxies, dividing the sample based on their global H i properties and comparing to a control sample of field galaxies. H i–poor cluster galaxies have reduced star formation rate (SFR) surface densities with respect to both H i–normal cluster and field galaxies (∼0.5 dex), suggesting that mechanisms regulating the global H i content are responsible for quenching local star formation. We demonstrate that the observed quenching in H i–poor galaxies is caused by environmental processes such as ram pressure stripping (RPS), simultaneously reducing the molecular gas surface density and star formation efficiency (SFE) compared to regions in H i–normal systems (by 0.38 and 0.22 dex, respectively). We observe systematically elevated SFRs that are driven by increased molecular gas surface densities at fixed stellar mass surface density in the outskirts of early stage RPS galaxies, while SFE remains unchanged with respect to the field sample. We quantify how RPS and starvation affect the star formation cycle of inner and outer galaxy disks as they are processed by the cluster. We show both are effective quenching mechanisms, with the key difference being that RPS acts upon the galaxy outskirts while starvation regulates the star formation cycle throughout disk, including within the truncation radius. For both processes, the quenching is caused by a simultaneous reduction in the molecular gas surface densities and SFE at fixed stellar mass surface density.

Molecular and ionized gas in tidal dwarf galaxies: the spatially resolved star formation relation

ABSTRACT Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are low-mass objects that form within tidal and/or collisional debris ejected from more massive interacting galaxies. We use CO(1–0) observations from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and integral-field spectroscopy from Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer to study molecular and ionized gas in three TDGs: two around the collisional galaxy NGC 5291 and one in the late-stage merger NGC 7252. The CO and H α emission is more compact than the H i emission and displaced from the H i dynamical centre, so these gas phases cannot be used to study the internal dynamics of TDGs. We use CO, H i, and H α data to measure the surface densities of molecular gas (Σmol), atomic gas (Σatom), and star formation rate (ΣSFR), respectively. We confirm that TDGs follow the same spatially integrated ΣSFR–Σgas relation of regular galaxies, where Σgas = Σmol + Σatom, even though they are H i dominated. We find a more complex behaviour in terms of the spatially resolved ΣSFR–Σmol relation on subkpc scales. The majority ($\sim 60~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) of star-forming regions in TDGs lie on the same ΣSFR–Σmol relation of normal spiral galaxies but show a higher dispersion around the mean. The remaining fraction of star-forming regions ($\sim 40~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) lie in the starburst region and are associated with the formation of massive super star clusters, as shown by Hubble Space Telescope images. We conclude that the local star formation activity in TDGs proceeds in a hybrid fashion, with some regions comparable to normal spiral galaxies and others to extreme starbursts.

Metal-THINGS: a panchromatic analysis of the local scaling relationships of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569

ABSTRACT We investigate several panchromatic scaling relations (SRs) for the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569 using Integral Field Unit (IFU) data from the Metal-THINGS Survey. Among the spatially resolved properties analysed, we explore SRs between the stellar mass, SFR, molecular gas, total gas, baryonic mass, gas metallicity, gas fraction, SFE, and effective oxygen yields. Such multiwavelength SRs are analysed at a spatial resolution of 180 pc, by combining our IFU observations with data from the surveys THINGS, CARMA, and archival data from DustPedia. Although we recover several known relations, our slopes are different to previously reported ones. Our star formation main sequence, Kennicutt–Schmidt (KS), and molecular KS relations show higher SFRs, lower scatter, and higher correlations, with steeper (1.21), and flatter slopes (0.96, 0.58), respectively. The shape of the SRs including metallicity, stellar mass, and gas fraction are flat, with an average value of 12 + log(O/H) ∼ 8.12 dex. The baryonic mass versus effective oxygen yields, and the stellar, gas and baryonic mass versus SFE show higher dispersions and lower correlations. Since we use the dust mass as a tracer of gas mass, we derive the dust-to-gas ratio and the CO luminosity-to-molecular gas mass conversion factors, showing differences of 0.16 and 0.95 dex for the total and molecular gas surface density, respectively, in comparison to previously reported values. We use a self-regulated feedback model to conclude that stellar feedback plays an important role generating outflows in NGC 1569.

Neutral Atomic and Molecular Clouds and Star Formation in the Outer Carina Arm

We present a comprehensive investigation of H i (super)clouds, molecular clouds (MCs), and star formation in the Carina spiral arm of the outer Galaxy. Utilizing HI4PI and CfA CO survey data, we identify H i clouds and MCs based on the (l, v LSR) locations of the Carina arm. We analyzed 26 H i clouds and 48 MCs. Most of the identified H i clouds are superclouds, with masses exceeding 106 M ⊙. We find that 15 of these superclouds have associated MC(s) with M H I ≳ 106 M ⊙ and 50 M ⊙ pc−2. Our virial equilibrium analysis suggests that these CO-bright H i clouds are gravitationally bound or marginally bound. We report an anticorrelation between molecular mass fractions and Galactocentric distances, and a correlation with total gas surface densities. Nine CO-bright H i superclouds are associated with H ii regions, indicating ongoing star formation. We confirm the regular spacing of H i superclouds along the spiral arm, which is likely due to some underlying physical process, such as gravitational instabilities. We observe a strong spatial correlation between H ii regions and MCs, with some offsets between MCs and local H i column density peaks. Our study reveals that, in the context of H i superclouds, the star formation rate surface density is independent of H i and total gas surface densities but positively correlates with molecular gas surface density. This finding is consistent with both extragalactic studies of the resolved Kennicutt–Schmidt relation and local giant molecular clouds study of Lada et al. (2013), emphasizing the crucial role of molecular gas in regulating star formation processes.

Star Formation Laws and Efficiencies across 80 Nearby Galaxies

We measure empirical relationships between the local star formation rate (SFR) and properties of the star-forming molecular gas on 1.5 kpc scales across 80 nearby galaxies. These relationships, commonly referred to as “star formation laws,” aim at predicting the local SFR surface density from various combinations of molecular gas surface density, galactic orbital time, molecular cloud free fall time, and the interstellar medium dynamical equilibrium pressure. Leveraging a multiwavelength database built for the Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby Galaxies (PHANGS) survey, we measure these quantities consistently across all galaxies and quantify systematic uncertainties stemming from choices of SFR calibrations and the CO-to-H2 conversion factors. The star formation laws we examine show 0.3–0.4 dex of intrinsic scatter, among which the molecular Kennicutt–Schmidt relation shows a ∼10% larger scatter than the other three. The slope of this relation ranges β ≈ 0.9–1.2, implying that the molecular gas depletion time remains roughly constant across the environments probed in our sample. The other relations have shallower slopes (β ≈ 0.6–1.0), suggesting that the star formation efficiency per orbital time, the star formation efficiency per free fall time, and the pressure-to-SFR surface density ratio (i.e., the feedback yield) vary systematically with local molecular gas and SFR surface densities. Last but not least, the shapes of the star formation laws depend sensitively on methodological choices. Different choices of SFR calibrations can introduce systematic uncertainties of at least 10%–15% in the star formation law slopes and 0.15–0.25 dex in their normalization, while the CO-to-H2 conversion factors can additionally produce uncertainties of 20%–25% for the slope and 0.10–0.20 dex for the normalization.

Aims. In this Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) science paper, we aim to study how the star formation process depends on the galactic environment and gravitational interactions in the context of galaxy evolution. We explore the scaling relation between the star formation rate surface density (ΣSFR) and the molecular gas surface density (Σmol), also known as the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation, in a subsample of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. Methods. We used new Atacama Compact Array and Total Power (ACA+TP) observations from the VERTICO-Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program at 720 pc resolution to resolve the molecular gas content, as traced by the 12CO (2 − 1) transition, across the disks of 37 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. In combination with archival UV and IR observations used to determine the star formation rate (SFR), we estimated the parameters of the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation for the entire ensemble of galaxies, and within individual galaxies. Results. We find the KS slope for the entire population to be N = 0.97 ± 0.07, with a characteristic molecular gas depletion time of 1.86 Gyr for our full sample, which is in agreement with previous work in isolated, nearby star-forming galaxies. In individual galaxies, we find that the KS slope ranges between 0.69 and 1.40, and that typical star formation efficiencies of molecular gas can vary from galaxy to galaxy by a factor of ∼4. These galaxy-to-galaxy variations account for ∼0.20 dex in scatter in the ensemble KS relation, which is characterized by a 0.42 dex scatter. In addition, we find that the HI-deficient galaxies in the Virgo cluster show a steeper resolved KS relation and lower molecular gas efficiencies than HI-normal cluster galaxies. Conclusions. While the molecular gas content in galaxies residing in the Virgo cluster appears – to first order – to behave similarly to that in isolated galaxies, our VERTICO sample of galaxies shows that cluster environments play a key role in regulating star formation. The environmental mechanisms affecting the HI galaxy content also have a direct impact on the star formation efficiency of molecular gas in cluster galaxies, leading to longer depletion times in HI-deficient members.

A nearly constant CN/HCN line ratio in nearby galaxies: CN as a new tracer of dense gas

ABSTRACT We investigate the relationship between CN N = 1 − 0 and HCN J = 1 − 0 emission on scales from 30 to 400 pc using ALMA archival data, for which CN is often observed simultaneously with the CO J = 1 − 0 line. In a sample of nine nearby galaxies ranging from ultra-luminous infrared galaxies to normal spiral galaxies, we measure a remarkably constant CN/HCN line intensity ratio of 0.86 ± 0.07 (standard deviation of 0.20). This relatively constant CN/HCN line ratio is rather unexpected, as models of photon dominated regions have suggested that HCN emission traces shielded regions with high column densities while CN should trace dense gas exposed to high ultraviolet radiation fields. We find that the CN/HCN line ratio shows no significant correlation with molecular gas surface density but shows a mild trend (increase of ∼1.3 per dex) with both star formation rate surface density and star formation efficiency (the inverse of the molecular gas depletion time). Some starburst and active galactic nuclei show small enhancements in their CN/HCN ratio, while other nuclei show no significant difference from their surrounding discs. The nearly constant CN/HCN line ratio implies that CN, like HCN, can be used as a tracer of dense gas mass and dense gas fraction in nearby galaxies.

Enhanced Star Formation Efficiency in the Central Regions of Nearby Quasar Hosts

We combine Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations tracing the molecular gas, millimeter continuum, and ionized gas emission in six low-redshift (z ≲ 0.06) Palomar–Green (PG) quasar host galaxies to investigate their ongoing star formation at roughly kiloparsec-scale resolution. The AGN contribution to the cold dust emission and the optical emission-line flux is carefully removed to derive spatial distributions of the star formation rate (SFR), which, complemented with the molecular gas data, enables the mapping of the depletion time (t dep). We report ubiquitous star formation activity within the quasar host galaxies, with the majority of the ongoing star formation occurring in the galactic center. The rise of the SFR surface density (ΣSFR) toward the nucleus is steeper than that observed for the cold molecular gas surface density, reaching values up to ΣSFR ≈ 0.15–0.80 M ⊙ yr−1 kpc−2. The gas in the nuclear regions is converted into stars at a shortened depletion time (t dep ≈ 0.2–2.0 Gyr), suggesting that those zones can be deemed as starbursts. At large galactocentric radius, we find that the ongoing star formation takes place within spiral arms or H ii region complexes, with an efficiency comparable to that reported for nearby inactive spirals (t dep ≈ 1.8 Gyr). We find no evidence of star formation activity shutoff in the PG quasar host galaxies. On the contrary, these observations shed light on how the central environments of galaxies hosting actively accreting supermassive black holes build up stellar mass.

Statistical Study of the Star Formation Efficiency in Bars: Is Star Formation Suppressed in Gas-rich Bars?

The dependence of the star formation efficiency (SFE) on galactic structures—especially whether the SFE in the bar region is lower than those in other regions—has recently been debated. We report the SFEs of 18 nearby gas-rich massive star-forming barred galaxies with large apparent bar major axes (≧75″). We statistically measure the SFE by distinguishing the center, the bar end, and the bar regions for the first time. The molecular gas surface density is derived from archival CO(1–0) and/or CO(2–1) data by assuming a constant CO-to-H2 conversion factor (α CO), and the star formation rate surface density is derived from a linear combination of far-UV and mid-IR intensities. The angular resolution is 15″, which corresponds to 0.3–1.8 kpc. We find that the ratio of the SFE in the bar to that in the disk was systematically lower than unity (typically 0.6–0.8), which means that the star formation in the bar is systematically suppressed. Our results are inconsistent with similar recent statistical studies, which have reported that the SFE tends to be independent of galactic structures. This inconsistency can be attributed to the differences in the definitions of the bar region, the spatial resolutions, the α CO, and the sample galaxies. Furthermore, we find a negative correlation between the SFE and the velocity width of the CO spectrum, which is consistent with the idea that the large dynamical effects—such as strong shocks, large shears, and fast cloud–cloud collisions caused by the noncircular motion of the bar—result in a low SFE.

VERTICO V: The environmentally driven evolution of the inner cold gas discs of Virgo cluster galaxies

Abstract The quenching of cluster satellite galaxies is inextricably linked to the suppression of their cold interstellar medium (ISM) by environmental mechanisms. While the removal of neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) at large radii is well studied, how the environment impacts the remaining gas in the centres of galaxies, which are dominated by molecular gas, is less clear. Using new observations from the Virgo Environment traced in CO survey (VERTICO) and archival H i data, we study the H i and molecular gas within the optical discs of Virgo cluster galaxies on 1.2-kpc scales with spatially resolved scaling relations between stellar ( $\Sigma_{\star}$ ), H i ( $\Sigma_{\text{H}\,{\small\text{I}}}$ ), and molecular gas ( $\Sigma_{\text{mol}}$ ) surface densities. Adopting H i deficiency as a measure of environmental impact, we find evidence that, in addition to removing the H i at large radii, the cluster processes also lower the average $\Sigma_{\text{H}\,{\small\text{I}}}$ of the remaining gas even in the central $1.2\,$ kpc. The impact on molecular gas is comparatively weaker than on the H i, and we show that the lower $\Sigma_{\text{mol}}$ gas is removed first. In the most H i-deficient galaxies, however, we find evidence that environmental processes reduce the typical $\Sigma_{\text{mol}}$ of the remaining gas by nearly a factor of 3. We find no evidence for environment-driven elevation of $\Sigma_{\text{H}\,{\small\text{I}}}$ or $\Sigma_{\text{mol}}$ in H i-deficient galaxies. Using the ratio of $\Sigma_{\text{mol}}$ -to- $\Sigma_{\text{H}\,{\small\text{I}}}$ in individual regions, we show that changes in the ISM physical conditions, estimated using the total gas surface density and midplane hydrostatic pressure, cannot explain the observed reduction in molecular gas content. Instead, we suggest that direct stripping of the molecular gas is required to explain our results.

Nearby galaxies in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey

Context. Magnetic fields, which regulate stellar feedback and star formation in galaxies, are key to understanding galaxy evolution. Aims. We probe the origin of magnetic fields in late-type galaxies, measuring magnetic field strengths and exploring whether magnetic fields are only passive constituents of the interstellar medium or whether, being part of the local energy equilibrium, they are active constituents. Methods. We measure equipartition magnetic field strengths in 39 galaxies from the second data release of the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS-DR2) at 144 MHz with 6 arcsec angular resolution (0.1–0.7 kpc). For a subset of nine galaxies, we obtain atomic and molecular mass surface densities using H I and CO(2-1) data from the THINGS and HERACLES surveys, respectively. These data are at 13 arcsec angular resolution, which corresponds to 0.3–1.2 kpc at the distances of our galaxies. We measure kinetic energy densities using H I and CO velocity dispersions. Results. We find a mean magnetic field strength of 3.6–12.5 μG with a mean of 7.9 ± 2.0 μG across the full sample. The magnetic field strength has the tightest and steepest relation with the total gas surface density, with B ∝ ΣH I+H20.309 ± 0.006. The relations with the star-formation rate surface density and molecular gas surface density have significantly flatter slopes. After accounting for the influence of cosmic-ray transport, we find an even steeper relation of B ∝ ΣH I+H20.393 ± 0.009. Conclusions. These results suggest that the magnetic field is regulated by a B–ρ relation, which has its origin in the saturation of the small-scale dynamo. This is borne out by an agreement of kinetic and magnetic energy densities, although local deviations do exist, in particular in areas of high kinetic energy densities where the magnetic field is sub-dominant.

The metallicity’s fundamental dependence on both local and global galactic quantities

ABSTRACT We study the scaling relations between gas-phase metallicity, stellar mass surface density (Σ*), star formation rate surface density (ΣSFR), and molecular gas surface density ($\Sigma _{{\rm H}_2}$) in local star-forming galaxies on scales of a kpc. We employ optical integral field spectroscopy from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, and ALMA data for a subset of MaNGA galaxies. We use partial correlation coefficients and Random Forest regression to determine the relative importance of local and global galactic properties in setting the gas-phase metallicity. We find that the local metallicity depends primarily on Σ* (the resolved mass–metallicity relation, rMZR), and has a secondary anticorrelation with ΣSFR (i.e. a spatially resolved version of the ‘Fundamental Metallicity Relation’, rFMR). We find that $\Sigma _{{\rm H}_2}$ is less important than ΣSFR in determining the local metallicity. This result indicates that gas accretion, resulting in local metallicity dilution and local boosting of star formation, is unlikely to be the primary origin of the rFMR. The local metallicity depends also on the global properties of galaxies. We find a strong dependence on the total stellar mass (M*) and a weaker (inverse) dependence on the total SFR. The global metallicity scaling relations, therefore, do not simply stem out of their resolved counterparts; global properties and processes, such as the global gravitational potential well, galaxy-scale winds and global redistribution/mixing of metals, likely contribute to the local metallicity, in addition to local production and retention.
