Chemical engineering of zein with polyethylene glycol and Angiopep-2 to manufacture a brain-targeted docetaxel nanomedicine for glioblastoma treatment.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the deadliest adult brain cancer. The current standard-of-care chemotherapy using orally administered temozolomide (TMZ) presents poor improvement in patient survival, emphasizing the compelling need for new therapies. A possible chemotherapeutic alternative is docetaxel (DTX), which possesses higher tumoricidal potency against GBM cells. However, its limited blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability poses a constraint on its application. Nonetheless, nanomedicine offers promising avenues for overcoming this challenge. Angiopep-2 (ANG2) is a peptide that targets the BBB-overexpressed low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR). In this work, we managed, for the first time, to employ a pioneering approach of covalently linking zein protein with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and ANG2 prior to its formulation into nanoparticles (ZNPs) with enhanced stability and LDLR-mediated brain targetability, respectively. Carbodiimide and click chemistry approaches were optimized, resulting in functional modification of zein with around 25% PEG, followed by functional modification of PEG with nearly 100% ANG2. DTX-loaded ZNPs presented 100nm average size, indicating high suitability for BBB crossing through receptor-mediated transcytosis. ZNPs maintained the cytotoxic effect of the loaded DTX against GBM cells, while demonstrating a safe matrix against BBB cells. Importantly, these brain-targeted ZNPs showcased up to fourfold enhancement in blood-to-brain permeability in a BBB in vitro model, highlighting the potential of this novel approach of BBB targeting in significantly improving therapeutic outcomes for GBM patients. The versatility of the system and the possibility of significantly increasing drug concentration in the brain open the door to its future application in a wide range of other brain-related diseases.

Enhancing camptothecin loading and release control through physical surface modification of organosilica nanoparticles with polyethylene glycol

The surface modification of nanoparticles holds the potential to enhance the loading capacity of drug molecules and regulate their release, making it possible to exploit the differences between tumor and normal cells. To this end, the surfaces of tetrasulfide-based phenylene-containing biodegradable periodic mesoporous organosilica (BPMO) nanoparticles (designated P4S) are modified herein with a hydrophilic and biocompatible polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer. The PEG coating is optimized by adjusting the PEG concentration during synthesis, thus resulting in a significant increase in the nanoparticle stability. Furthermore, PEG modification enhances the nanoparticles' camptothecin (CPT) loading capacity. Drug release assessments under physical and acidic pH conditions demonstrate the pH-responsive properties of the P4S nanoparticles upon PEG functionalization, which results in increased drug release at low pH, along with enhanced cellular uptake potential. Notably, the cytotoxicity of CPT against HepG2 cancer cells is significantly improved when loaded into the P4S-PEG nanoparticles. These findings reveal the efficacy of PEG surface modification of the drug-delivery material in augmenting the activity of CPT, with promising prospects for clinical applications.

Co-delivery of retinoic acid and miRNA by functional Au nanoparticles for improved survival and CT imaging tracking of MSCs in pulmonary fibrosis therapy

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) therapy. Increasing the MSC survival rate and deepening the understanding of the behavior of transplanted MSCs are of great significance for improving the efficacy of MSC-based IPF treatment. Therefore, dual-functional Au-based nanoparticles (Au@PEG@PEI@TAT NPs, AuPPT) were fabricated by sequential modification of cationic polymer polyetherimide (PEI), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and transactivator of transcription (TAT) penetration peptide on AuNPs, to co-deliver retinoic acid (RA) and microRNA (miRNA) for simultaneously enhancing MSC survive and real-time imaging tracking of MSCs during IPF treatment. AuPPT NPs, with good drug loading and cellular uptake abilities, could efficiently deliver miRNA and RA to protect MSCs from reactive oxygen species and reduce their expression of apoptosis executive protein Caspase 3, thus prolonging the survival time of MSC after transplantation. In the meantime, the intracellular accumulation of AuPPT NPs enhanced the computed tomography imaging contrast of transplanted MSCs, allowing them to be visually tracked in vivo. This study establishes an Au-based dual-functional platform for drug delivery and cell imaging tracking, which provides a new strategy for MSC-related IPF therapy.

A Concise Review on Effect of PEGylation on the Properties of Lipid-Based Nanoparticles.

Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems have emerged as promising platforms for enhancing therapeutic efficacy while minimizing off-target effects. Among various strategies employed to optimize these systems, polyethylene glycol (PEG) modification, known as PEGylation-the covalent attachment of PEG to nanoparticles, has gained considerable attention for its ability to impart stealth properties to nanoparticles while also extending circulation time and improving biocompatibility. PEGylation extends to different drug delivery systems, in specific, nanoparticles for targeting cancer cells, where the concentration of drug in the cancer cells is improved by virtue of PEGylation. The primary challenge linked to PEGylation lies in its confirmation. Numerous research findings provide comprehensive insights into selecting PEG for various PEGylation methods. In this review, we have endeavored to consolidate the outcomes concerning the choice of PEG and diverse PEGylation techniques.

Impact of protein corona and PEGylation on the accumulation and efficacy of lysosome-disrupting lipid nanoparticles in KRAS-mutated cancer

Nanomedicines offer promising approaches for targeted drug delivery to tumor cells but their clinical translation is hindered by limited delivery efficacy in heterogenous clinical tumors. Protein corona adsorbed to the surface of nanoparticles (NPs) would cause opsonization and accelerate blood clearance, posing a significant barrier to effective drug delivery. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) modification is widely employed to prolong the NPs’ circulation time and improve the delivery efficacy. Nevertheless, the clinical efficacy of PEG-based nanomedicines is still debatable. Here, we prepared non-PEGylated lysosomal-disrupting dimeric chloroquine (CQ) lipid nanoparticles (DCLNPs) and PEGylated DCLNPs (PEG-DCLNPs) and systematically studied the impact of PEGylation on DCLNPs’ delivery efficacy in KRAS-mutant (MT) and -wildtype (WT) cancers. We found that the protein corona facilitates KRAS-MT cancer-specific targeted delivery of DCLNPs by exploiting extracellular protein engulfment preference. In contrast, PEGylation hindered delivery and efficacy of DCLNPs. Proteomics analysis highlighted apolipoproteins, particular apolipoprotein E, as key factors promoting the uptake of DCLNPs. Additionally, DCLNPs sensitized immunosuppressive KRAS-MT cancers to anti-PD1 immunotherapy. These results underscore the importance of comprehending the context-dependent role of the protein corona in regulating nanoparticle biodistribution, suggesting that PEGylation may not be suitable across all cancer types.

PEG modification increases thermostability and inhibitor resistance of Bst DNA polymerase.

Polyethylene glycol modification (PEGylation) is a widely used strategy to improve the physicochemical properties of various macromolecules, especially protein drugs. However, its application in enhancing the performance of enzymes for molecular biology remains underexplored. This study explored the PEGylation of Bst DNA polymerase, determining optimal modification reaction conditions. In comparison to the unmodified wild-type counterpart, the modified Bst DNA polymerase exhibited significantly improved activity, thermal stability, and inhibitor tolerance during loop-mediated isothermal amplification. When applied for the detection of Salmonella in crude samples, the modified enzyme demonstrated a notably accelerated reaction rate. Therefore, PEGylation emerges as a viable strategy for refining DNA polymerases, helping in the development of novel molecular diagnostic reagents.

Combined ROS Sensitive Folate Receptor Targeted Micellar Formulations of Curcumin Effective Against Rheumatoid Arthritis in Rat Model.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory immune-mediated disease that involves synovitis, cartilage destruction, and even joint damage. Traditional agents used for RA therapy remain unsatisfactory because of their low efficiency and obvious adverse effects. Therefore, we here established RA microenvironment-responsive targeted micelles that can respond to the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in the joint and improve macrophage-specific targeting of loaded drugs. We here prepared ROS-responsive folate-modified curcumin micelles (TK-FA-Cur-Ms) in which thioketal (TK) was used as a ROS-responsive linker for modifying polyethylene glycol 5000 (PEG5000) on the micellar surface. When micelles were in the ROS-overexpressing inflammatory microenvironment, the PEG5000 hydration layer was shed, and the targeting ligand FA was exposed, thereby enhancing cellular uptake by macrophages through active targeting. The targeting, ROS sensitivity and anti-inflammatory properties of the micelles were assessed in vitro. Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rats model was utilized to investigate the targeting, expression of serum inflammatory factors and histology change of the articular cartilage by micelles in vivo. TK-FA-Cur-Ms had a particle size of 90.07 ± 3.44 nm, which decreased to 78.87 ± 2.41 nm after incubation with H2O2. The micelles exhibited in vitro targeting of RAW264.7 cells and significantly inhibited inflammatory cytokine levels. Pharmacodynamic studies have revealed that TK-FA-Cur-Ms prolonged the drug circulation and exhibited augmented cartilage-protective and anti-inflammatory effects in vivo. The unique ROS-responsive targeted micelles with targeting, ROS sensitivity and anti-inflammatory properties were successfully prepared and may offer an effective therapeutic strategy against RA.

Physicochemical Properties of Inorganic and Hybrid Hydroxyapatite-Based Granules Modified with Citric Acid or Polyethylene Glycol.

This study delves into the physicochemical properties of inorganic hydroxyapatite (HAp) and hybrid hydroxyapatite-chitosan (HAp-CTS) granules, also gold-enriched, which can be used as aggregates in biomicroconcrete-type materials. The impact of granules' surface modifications with citric acid (CA) or polyethylene glycol (PEG) was assessed. Citric acid modification induced increased specific surface area and porosity in inorganic granules, contrasting with reduced parameters in hybrid granules. PEG modification resulted in a slight increase in specific surface area for inorganic granules and a substantial rise for hybrid granules with gold nanoparticles. Varied effects on open porosity were observed based on granule type. Microstructural analysis revealed increased roughness for inorganic granules post CA modification, while hybrid granules exhibited smoother surfaces. Novel biomicroconcretes, based on α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) calcium phosphate cement and developed granules as aggregates within, were evaluated for compressive strength. Compressive strength assessments showcased significant enhancement with PEG modification, emphasizing its positive impact. Citric acid modification demonstrated variable effects, depending on granule composition. The incorporation of gold nanoparticles further enriched the multifaceted approach to enhancing calcium phosphate-based biomaterials for potential biomedical applications. This study demonstrates the pivotal role of surface modifications in tailoring the physicochemical properties of granules, paving the way for advanced biomicroconcretes with improved compressive strength for diverse biomedical applications.

Modification of liposomes: preparation, purpose, methods and the application in food

SummaryThe use of liposomes as an effective delivery system has been well documented. This system offers protection to functional components from various environmental factors such as light, oxygen, temperature and pH. However, liposomes also present certain limitations, including poor targeting, instability, short in vivo circulation time and low utilisation of encapsulated substances. These drawbacks can be addressed through the modification of liposomes. This review article examines the preparation of modified liposomes using methods such as the thin‐film method, reverse evaporation method and injection method. The purpose of liposome modification and its application in food are discussed, with a focus on enhancing targeting, prolonging in vivo circulation time, improving stability and ensuring the stability of encapsulated substances during storage. Additionally, the article explores modification methods such as polyethylene glycol modification, peptide and protein modification and polysaccharide modification. This comprehensive review aims to contribute to a better understanding of liposome modification and provide valuable references for the development of novel modified liposomes.

A new class of polyphenolic carbosilane dendrimers binds human serum albumin in a structure-dependent fashion

The use of dendrimers as drug and nucleic acid delivery systems requires knowledge of their interactions with objects on their way to the target. In the present work, we investigated the interaction of a new class of carbosilane dendrimers functionalized with polyphenolic and caffeic acid residues with human serum albumin, which is the most abundant blood protein. The addition of dendrimers to albumin solution decreased the zeta potential of albumin/dendrimer complexes as compared to free albumin, increased density of the fibrillary form of albumin, shifted fluorescence spectrum towards longer wavelengths, induced quenching of tryptophan fluorescence, and decreased ellipticity of circular dichroism resulting from a reduction in the albumin α-helix for random coil structural form. Isothermal titration calorimetry showed that, on average, one molecule of albumin was bound by 6–10 molecules of dendrimers. The zeta size confirmed the binding of the dendrimers to albumin. The interaction of dendrimers and albumin depended on the number of caffeic acid residues and polyethylene glycol modifications in the dendrimer structure. In conclusion, carbosilane polyphenolic dendrimers interact with human albumin changing its structure and electrical properties. However, the consequences of such interaction for the efficacy and side effects of these dendrimers as drug/nucleic acid delivery system requires further research.

M1 type macrophage targeted anti-inflammatory exosomes derived from BMSC for the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases

Uncontrolled inflammatory response is both an intervention target for various diseases, and the design basis for drug delivery strategies. In this work, based on the highly enriched characteristics of M1 type macrophages in local inflammation, we used exosomes derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) as drug carriers, modified with hyaluronic acid (HA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prepare an inflammation targeted and anti-inflammatory treatment nanoplatform (EXs-PH). By targeting M1 macrophages, HA endows EXs-PH with the ability to target inflammation, while PEG reduces the interaction between plasma proteins and exosome membrane proteins, giving the exosomes the ability to circulate within the body for a long time. The results indicate that after HA and PEG (PH) modification, exosomes derived from BMSC (EXs) can effectively enrich in the inflammatory site, achieving precise administration of curcumin (Cur) with anti-inflammatory and repair promoting functions. In vivo experiments on acute and chronic inflammatory models of spinal cord injury (SCI) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) also showed that PH modified Exs loaded with Cur (Cur@EXs-PH) were more effective in improving the recovery of motor function after lesions. In conclusion, the engineered Cur@EXs-PH we designed, provides a new drug delivery carrier for treating inflammatory diseases.

Study on the stability and targeting of AuNPs based on PEG and pepducin surface modification

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have garnered significant attention for their potential applications in cancer therapy. This study developed a novel formulation of AuNPs, named AuX2R, utilizing surface modification techniques to enhance biocompatibility and targeting capabilities for cancer treatment. The innovation of AuX2R lies in its simultaneous surface modification with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and lipidized peptides (pepducin), aimed at improving stability and cancer cell specificity. The study compared the stability of three different formulations of AuNPs in various solutions, indicating that PEGylation significantly increased nanoparticle stability, while the incorporation of pepducin enhanced their internalization and targeting towards cancer cells. This research not only provided a detailed analysis of the physicochemical properties and stability of the novel AuNPs but also investigated their internalization in prostate cancer cells, presenting new strategies for cancer therapy.

Research progress on the PEGylation of therapeutic proteins and peptides (TPPs).

With the rapid advancement of genetic and protein engineering, proteins and peptides have emerged as promising drug molecules for therapeutic applications. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in the field of chemical modification technology to address challenges associated with their clinical use, including rapid clearance from circulation, immunogenicity, physical and chemical instabilities (such as aggregation, adsorption, deamination, clipping, oxidation, etc.), and enzymatic degradation. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) modification offers an effective solution to these issues due to its favorable properties. This review presents recent progress in the development and application of PEGylated therapeutic proteins and peptides (TPPs). For this purpose, firstly, the physical and chemical properties as well as classification of PEG and its derivatives are described. Subsequently, a detailed summary is provided on the main sites of PEGylated TPPs and the factors that influence their PEGylation. Furthermore, notable instances of PEG-modified TPPs (including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), interferon, asparaginase and antibodies) are highlighted. Finally, we propose the chemical modification of TPPs with PEG, followed by an analysis of the current development status and future prospects of PEGylated TPPs. This work provides a comprehensive literature review in this promising field while facilitating researchers in utilizing PEG polymers to modify TPPs for disease treatment.

Auranofin-Loaded Chitosan Nanoparticles Demonstrate Potency against Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a clinical challenge due to molecular, metabolic, and genetic heterogeneity as well as the lack of validated drug targets. Thus, therapies or delivery paradigms are needed. Gold-derived compounds including the FDA-approved drug, auranofin have shown promise as effective anticancer agents against several tumors. To improve the solubility and bioavailability of auranofin, we hypothesized that the nanodelivery of auranofin using biodegradable chitosan modified polyethylene glycol (PEG) nanoparticles (NPs) will enhance anticancer activity against TNBC by comparing the best nanoformulation with the free drug. The selection of the nanoformulation was based on synthesis of various chitosan PEG copolymers via formaldehyde-mediated engraftment of PEG onto chitosan to form [chitosan-g-PEG] copolymer. Furthermore, altered physiochemical properties of the copolymer was based on the formaldehyde ratio towards nanoparticles (CP 1-4 NPs). Following the recruitment of PEG onto the chitosan polymer surface, we explored how this process influenced the stiffness of the nanoparticle using atomic force microscopy (AFM), a factor crucial for in vitro and in vivo studies. Our objective was to ensure the full functionality and inherent properties of chitosan as the parent polymer was maintained without allowing PEG to overshadow chitosan's unique cationic properties while improving solubility in neutral pH. Hence, CP 2 NP was chosen. To demonstrate the efficacy of CP 2 NP as a good delivery carrier for auranofin, we administered a dose of 3 mg/kg of auranofin, in contrast to free auranofin, which was given at 5 mg/kg. In vivo studies revealed the potency of encapsulated auranofin against TNBC cells with a severe necrotic effect following treatment superior to that of free auranofin. In conclusion, chitosan-g-PEG nanoparticles have the potential to be an excellent delivery system for auranofin, increasing its effectiveness and potentially reducing its clinical limitations.

Synergistic Interaction between Metal Single-Atoms and Defective WO3- x Nanosheets for Enhanced Sonodynamic Cancer Therapy.

Although metal single-atom (SA)-based nanomaterials are explored as sonosensitizers for sonodynamic therapy (SDT), they normally exhibit poor activities and need to combine with other therapeutic strategies. Herein, the deposition of metal SAs on oxygen vacancy (OV)-rich WO3- x nanosheets to generate a synergistic effect for efficient SDT is reported. Crystalline WO3 and OV-rich WO3- x nanosheets are first prepared by simple calcination of the WO3 ·H2 O nanosheets under an air and N2 atmosphere, respectively. Pt, Cu, Fe, Co, and Ni metal SAs are then deposited on WO3- x nanosheets to obtain metal SA-decorated WO3- x nanocomposites (M-WO3- x ). Importantly, the Cu-WO3- x sonosensitizer exhibits a much higher activity for ultrasound (US)-induced production of reactive oxygen species than that of the WO3- x and Cu SA-decorated WO3 , which is also higher than other M-WO3- x nanosheets. Both the experimental and theoretical results suggest that the excellent SDT performance of the Cu-WO3- x nanosheets should be attributed to the synergistic effect between Cu SAs and WO3- x OVs. Therefore, after polyethylene glycol modification, the Cu-WO3- x can quickly kill cancer cells in vitro and effectively eradicate tumors in vivo under US irradiation. Transcriptome sequencing analysis and further molecular validation suggest that the Cu-WO3- x -mediated SDT-activated apoptosis and TNF signaling pathways are potential drivers of tumor apoptosis induction.

Comparing solution-gate and bottom-gate nanowire field-effect transistors on pH sensing with different salt concentrations and surface modifications

Field-effect transistors (FETs) have been developed as pH sensors by using various device structures, fabrication technologies, and sensing film materials. Different transistor structures, like extended-gate (EG) FETs, floating-gate FET sensors, and dual-gate (DG) FETs, can enhance the sensor performance. In this article, we report the effects of using solution-gate and bottom-gate FET configurations on pH sensing and investigate the influence of different ionic concentrations of buffers in the measured signals. The surface charge of hafnium dioxide (HfO2) affected by the buffer pH, with/without the modification of polyethylene glycol (PEG) terminated with hydroxyl groups, and the location of applied gate voltage are vital factors to the sensor performance in pH sensing. Based on the results, the solution-gate FET exhibits good pH sensitivity even in the high ionic strength solutions of bis-tris propane (BTP), and these values of pH sensitivity are close to the Nernst limit (59.2 mV/pH). In general, silane-PEG-OH modification can reduce the deviations of measured signals in pH sensing. The performance of bottom-gate FET is inferior in the BTP buffers with high ionic solutions but suitable to be operated in low ionic concentrations, such as 0.1, 1, and 10 mM BTP buffers. The size of the ions was also studied and discussed. The solution-gate FET demonstrates excellent performance under high ionic strengths, meaning a more significant potential for detecting biological molecules under physiological conditions.

Design and preparation of an artificial vascular scaffold with internal surface modification.

Advances in regeneration methods have brought us improved vascular scaffolds with small diameters (φ < 6 mm) for enhancing biological suitability that solve their propensity for causing intimal hyperplasia post-transplantation. The correlation between the rehydration ratio of the hydrogel and its material concentration is obtained by adjusting the material ratio of the hydrogel solution. The vascular model with helical structure has been established and analyzed to verify the effect of helical microvascular structure on thrombosis formation by the fluid simulation methods. Then, the helical structure vascular has been fabricated by self-developed 3D bioprinter, the vascular scaffolds are freeze-dried and rehydrated in polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution. The experimental results showed that the hybrid hydrogel had a qualified rehydration ratio when the content of gelatin, sodium alginate, and glycerol was 5, 6, and 3 wt%. The established flow channel model can effectively reduce thrombus deposition and improve long-term patency ratio. After PEG solution modification, the contact angle of the inner wall of the vascular scaffold was less than 30°, showing better hydrophilic characteristics. In study, a small-diameter inner wall vascular scaffold with better long-term patency was successfully designed and prepared by wrinkling and PEG modification of the inner wall of the vascular scaffold. This study not only creates small-diameter vascular scaffolds with helical structure that improves the surface hydrophilicity to reduce the risk of thrombosis but also rekindles confidence in the regeneration of small caliber vascular structures.

To Assess Drug Delivery System Nanocarrier at Industrial Production: Establishment of Liposomal Surface Using Physicochemical Properties

Liposomes have been reported to be useful nanocarrier, however, there are number of challenges to resolve before they can be optimized for drug delivery. Liposomes are taken up by cell in the reticuloendothelial system (RES). Polyethyleneglycol (PEG) modification on the liposomal membrane forms a fixed aqueous layer and thus prevents uptake by the RES. The physicochemical properties of liposomes that are most commonly evaluated particle size and zeta potential are not sufficient indicator of the passive targeting effect by PEG modification. In contrast, the fixed aqueous layer thickness (FALT) around liposomal surface was clear to be regulated to be the utilized action in the body. It was showed that the FALT value of PEG-modified liposomes containing doxorubicin increased with the increase in the molecular weight of PEG. Furthermore, PEG modification with a combination of high- and low- molecular weight PEGs on liposomal membranes showed in optimal results with respect to FALT and a higher antitumor effect. In addition, we designed and synthesized a novel PEG-lipid, different double arms PEG (DDA-PEG), which consisted of two PEG chains of 500 and 2000 in one molecule to develop more useful PEG-modified liposomes. DDA-PEG was found to have superior antitumor activity and was associated with the prevention of tumor metastasis. Furthermore, we sought to (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) functions as a target ligand of the 67-kDa laminin receptor (67LR), which is expressed on high-grade tumor cells. EGCG-PEG-modified liposome appear to have superior antitumor activity against high 67LR-expressing tumor cells, as the liposomes had dual effects.

Optimized silicate nanozymes with atomically incorporated iron and manganese for intratumoral coordination-enhanced once-for-all catalytic therapy.

Although plant-derived cancer therapeutic products possess great promise in clinical translations, they still suffer from quick degradation and low targeting rates. Herein, based on the oxygen vacancy (OV)-immobilization strategy, an OV-enriched biodegradable silicate nanoplatform with atomically dispersed Fe/Mn active species and polyethylene glycol modification was innovated for loading gallic acid (GA) (noted as FMMPG) for intratumoral coordination-enhanced multicatalytic cancer therapy. The OV-enriched FMMPG nanozymes with a narrow band gap (1.74 eV) can be excited by a 650 nm laser to generate reactive oxygen species. Benefiting from the Mn-O bond in response to the tumor microenvironment (TME), the silicate skeleton in FMMPG collapses and completely degrades after 24 h. The degraded metal M (M = Fe, Mn) ions and released GA can in situ produce a stable M-GA nanocomplex at tumor sites. Importantly, the formed M-GA with strong reductive ability can transform H2O2 into the fatal hydroxyl radical, causing serious oxidative damage to the tumor. The released Fe3+ and Mn2+ can serve as enhanced contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging, which can track the chemodynamic and photodynamic therapy processes. The work offers a reasonable strategy for a TME-responsive degradation and intratumoral coordination-enhanced multicatalytic therapy founded on bimetallic silicate nanozymes to achieve desirable tumor theranostic outcomes.

Modification of Polyethylene Glycol and Citric Acid on Palm Fiber Waste Nanofibers on the Adsorption of Violet Crystal Dyes

&lt;p&gt;This study developed nanofibers derived from sugar palm fiber waste, incorporating citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) modifications to adsorb crystal violet (CV) dye. The synthesis process involved alkalization-acid hydrolysis and bleaching techniques. Subsequent analyses of nanofiber characteristics were conducted using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX). The efficacy of these modified nanofibers in adsorbing CV was quantitatively measured using an Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. The study successfully synthesized nanofibers from sugar palm fiber waste with modifications: PEG-modified nanofibers (NP 2 and NP 24) and citric acid-modified nanofibers (NS 2 and NS 24). These modifications resulted in nanofibers with a smooth, white texture. FTIR analysis of the samples (N, NP 2, NP 24, NS 2, and NS 24) revealed the presence of functional groups essential for cellulose, specifically -OH, C-H, and C-O groups. The addition of citric acid introduced a new group, C=O, albeit with very weak intensity. PEG modifications were evident from the stretching observed in the -OH groups. SEM analysis confirmed the presence of a layer on the nanofibers, attributed to citric acid (NS 2 and NS 24) and PEG (NP 2 and NP 24). XRD results indicated that the pre-and post-modification nanofibers exhibited a semi-crystalline phase. The adsorption mechanism was predominantly guided by Van der Waals electrostatic interactions between the absorbent material and the adsorbate. Intriguingly, the citric acid and PEG modifications did not significantly alter the adsorption outcomes. The adsorption capacity remained stable over time, as evidenced by measurements of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 minutes.&lt;/p&gt;
