Utilizing cationic vacancies to enhance nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxides for efficient electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction

Electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is a promising approach for urea-rich wastewater splitting, which benefits for reducing energy consumption in hydrogen production accompanying environmental protection and sustainable energy development. To address the limitations posed by the self-oxidation of nickel-based catalysts on the activity of UOR, we here developed a NiCo LDH nanosheet catalyst with abundant Ni vacancies to initiate the UOR process prior to nickel oxidation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and In-situ spectroscopic characterizations confirm that the UOR process primarily occurs on the surface of the catalyst, rather than being driven by nickel oxidation products. The favorable electronic structure modulation induced by Ni vacancies makes the catalyst more energetically favorable for the UOR compared to nickel self-oxidation. The catalyst exhibits excellent UOR activity, only requiring 1.27 V vs. RHE at 10 mA cm−2 and 1.34 V vs. RHE at 100 mA cm−2, with no significant decay observed after over 120 h of operation. Furthermore, it can function as a bifunctional catalyst, requiring only 1.66 V to achieve 100 mA cm−2 for the UOR||HER system. This study expands the pathway for the application of cationic vacancies in UOR.

Recent Advances in Electronic Structure Modifications of Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) for the Water Splitting Application

AbstractElectrocatalytic water splitting is a feasible method for large‐scale hydrogen production. Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been identified as a possible candidate for accelerating the water splitting process. Nevertheless, certain structural alterations are necessary for immaculate LDH because of their weak electrocatalytic activity. These structural changes alter the local reaction environment by modulating the electronic structure of the metal center present in the LDH. This electronic structure tailoring is accomplished by a variety of processes, including heteroatom doping, single atom inclusion, cationic defect, oxygen vacancy creation, and heterostructure formation. Recently, there has been an uptick of advancement in this field, and it is necessary to summarize these developments. This review provides a concise summary of the current reports on the electronic structure manipulation of layered double hydroxide. The review begins by examining the local environmental changes of LDH resulting from the insertion of single atoms. Subsequently, we explore the charge transfer that occurs at the interface between LDH and other transition metal heterostructures. In addition, we explored the impact on the metal center near the vacancies on the basal plane of LDH. Finally, we presented a future perspective and guidance for advancing this field in electrocatalysis.

Assessing electronic structure modulation strategies toward the development of low‐cost oxygen evolution reaction catalysts

AbstractOxygen evolution reactions (OER) are critical to electrochemical synthesis reactions, including hydrogen production and organic hydrogenation. However, the high cost of existing OER catalysts (primarily Ir/Ru and its derived oxides) limits their practical application for electrochemical synthesis. To develop a low‐cost, high‐efficiency alternative, we need a deeper understanding of both the mechanisms that drive OER and the relationship between the catalyst's electronic structure and active sites. Here, we summarized recent developments of catalysts, especially focusing on the electronic structure modulation strategies and their subsequent activity enhancement. Most importantly, we pointed out the study directions for further work.

Modulation of d-Orbital Interactions in Dual-Atom Catalysts for Enhanced Polysulfide Anchoring and Kinetics in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Modulating the electronic structure is essential for improving the anchoring and catalytic capabilities of catalysts in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). This study delves into the modulation of d-orbitals in transition metal dual-atom catalysts (DACs) supported by boron nitride and graphene (BNC) hybrid sheets for LSBs. This study reveals that the d-band center of the DACs, a key determinant of material chemical properties, is primarily determined by the electronic configuration of the dyz and dx2-y2 orbitals. Furthermore, the interaction between dz2 of transition metals and S_3 p orbitals is critical for the binding strength of LiPSs. By understanding these interactions, the functionality of DACs can be customized for optimal performance in LSBs. For example, the MnCrBNC catalyst with 10 d-electrons exhibits the optimal d-band center and demonstrates exceptional LiPSs binding capability, the lowest Li2S decomposition energy barrier, and the lowest Gibbs free energy of reaction for the rate-determining step of sulfur reduction. This study elucidates the fundamental mechanisms for designing high-performance LSB catalysts through electronic structure modulation.

Dynamic Fe-O-Cu induced electronic structure modulation on CuOx electrode for selective electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol

Electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction to produce high-value organic chemicals has research significance for managing the overproduction of glycerol and handling the energy crisis. Herein, a copper-based self-supporting catalytic electrode with a dynamic Fe-O-Cu optimized coordination (Fe-CuOx/CF) was prepared. The oxygen-bridged asymmetric coordination structure (Fe-O-Cu) optimized the electronic configuration and promoted the formation of the crucial intermediate species. After Fe was embedded in the lattice of copper oxides, a remarkable enhancement in the adsorption capacity of OH- and glycerol was confirmed. As a result, Fe-CuOx/CF exhibited an excellent production capacity of formate, with high faradaic efficiency and selectivity values of 93.65 % and 95.10 %. Concurrent production of formate and high purity hydrogen was achieved in the double-electrode flow electrolyzer. This work provides guiding significance for the optimization of the catalytic coordination and the design of high-efficiency transition metal-based catalysts for electrooxidation of biomass platform molecules.

Coupled Lattice‐Expanded Ni and MoO2 Array for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

AbstractTransition metal oxides have attracted much attention due to their good electrical conductivity, high chemical stability, and easy electronic structure modulation. However, it is still a great challenge to solve the problems of sluggish reaction kinetics and high overpotential in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their poor intrinsic activity. Herein, a lattice‐expanded Ni‐decorated MoO2 array (Ni‐MoO2‐700) catalyst is prepared for the alkaline HER. Unlike most of the reported literature, the decoration of metal heteroatoms may lead to lattice expansion of the carrier catalyst. In contrast, lattice expansion of Ni is also achieved by adjusting the annealing temperature in this work. The Ni‐induced lattice‐expanding effect can not only modulate the electronic structure of the catalyst but also accelerate electron transfer during the reaction, thus increasing its intrinsic activity for the HER. As a result, Ni‐MoO2‐700 exhibits significantly enhanced catalytic activity with an overpotential of 74.9 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 m KOH, which is far superior to that of most of the reported advanced Ni‐ and Mo‐based materials. This work provides deep intrinsic insight and a great opportunity to design efficient transition metal oxide catalysts for the alkaline HER.

Energy‐Saving Hydrogen Production from Methanol Electrocatalysis Catalyzed by Molybdenum Phosphide/Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon Polyhedrons Supported Pt Nanoparticles

Comprehensive SummaryImproving the catalytic efficiency and anti‐poisoning ability of Pt‐based catalysts is very critical in methanol electrolysis technology for high‐purity hydrogen generation. Herein, the nitrogen‐doped carbon polyhedrons‐encapsulated MoP (MoP@NC) supported Pt nanoparticles were demonstrated to be effective for methanol electrolysis resulting from the combined advantages. The nitrogen‐doped carbon polyhedrons not only greatly enhanced the conductivity but also effectively prevented the aggregation of MoP to offer Pt anchoring sites. The electronic structure modification of Pt from their interaction reduced the adsorption energy of CO*, resulting in good CO‐poisoning resistance and accelerated reaction kinetics. Specifically, Pt‐MoP@NC exhibited the highest peak current density of 106.4 mA·cm–2 for methanol oxidation and a lower overpotential of 28 mV at 10 mA·cm–2 for hydrogen evolution. Energy‐saving hydrogen production from methanol electrolysis was demonstrated in the two‐electrode systems assembled by Pt‐MoP@NC which required a low cell voltage of 0.65 V to reach a kinetic current density of 10 mA·cm–2 on the glass carbon system, about 1.02 V less than that of water electrolysis.

Synthesis and characterization of zinc-doped hematite nanoparticles for photocatalytic applications and their electronic structure studies by density functional theory

Hematite nanoparticles doped with 1, 3 and 5 % Zn (all % are in molar) were prepared using mechanical alloying. Morphological and phase structure studies using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed nanoparticles possessing a semi-spherical shape and particle size of <50 nm crystallized in rhombohedral structure. The lattice parameters of hematite increased upon Zn doping. The energy-dispersive X-ray and Fourier-transform infrared results demonstrated that Zn was successfully incorporated. The optical behavior of nanoparticles was examined by UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and revealed that Zn doping increased the absorption intensity in the visible light region and decreased the band gap from 1.95 (hematite) to 1.83 eV (3 % Zn). Methylene blue dye degradation by the 3 % Zn sample proved doubling of the photocatalytic activity due to electronic structure modification upon Zn doping. First principles studies using density functional theory performed to investigate the effect of Zn on the electronic band structure of hematite showed that Zn doping caused band gap reduction, causing formation of new energy states, mainly above the valence band. Eventually, the enhancement of Urbach energy and reduction of effective mass, respectively accountable for increasing the relaxation time and mobility of charge carriers, were considered the two main mechanisms regarding the increased photocatalytic behavior of hematite by Zn doping.

Improving Catalytic Performance via the Synergy of Tensile Lattice Strain and Plasmonic Enhancement in Defective AuPd@Pd Short Nanowires.

The synthesis of bimetallic nanocatalysts with strained crystal lattices has attracted considerable interest. This is because, beyond the electronic structure modifications realized through elemental doping, the strain effect offers an extra mechanism to fine-tune the electronic structures, thereby possibly improving the catalytic performances. We present a method for constructing defective AuPd@Pd short nanowires, achieved through a controlled galvanic replacement reaction between short AuCu nanowires and Pd precursors. Advanced structural analyses using spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM) validated the expanded crystal lattice on the nanowire surface and also demonstrated pronounced plasmonic absorption in the UV-vis region. Leveraging both plasmonic absorption and strain effects, the AuPd@Pd short nanowires displayed a higher apparent rate constant compared to Pd nanoparticles. Integrating molecular dynamic simulations with density functional theory calculations revealed that the tensile strain on AuPd@Pd short nanowires benefited the catalytic activity by elevating the d-band center, thereby intensifying the adsorption of p-nitrophenol. The current research introduces a unique method for synthesizing noble metal nanocrystals with specific dimensions and elucidates the rational development of high-performance plasmonic nanocatalysts through synergistic exploitation of the beneficial strain effect.

Local electronic structure modulation via S substitution enables fast-discharging capability for Li-rich Mn-based oxides cathodes

Anionic and cationic redox reaction contribute to the ultrahigh specific capacities of Li-rich Mn-based oxides cathodes (LMNC). However, the irreversible oxygen evolution and sluggish kinetics result in the continuous capacity decay and poor rate performance, which limited its application as cathode material in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, the local electronic structure of LMNC is appropriately modulated via S2− doping to alleviate oxygen release, stabilize the crystal structure stability, and facilitate Li+ diffusion via facile surface defect engineering. The effect of S2− doping site on the systematically energy is investigated by DFT. Under the guidance of this result, LNMC-S is prepared by co-precipitation and high-temperature solid-phase reaction method. The effect of doping concentration on electrochemical property of LMNC was systematically investigated. The results exhibit that S2− doping can effectively suppress the electronic insulation of Li2MnO3, enhance the transport dynamics of lithium ion and inhibit the phase transition of LMNC sample during charge-discharge process. Thereby, the modified sample exhibits superior electrochemical property, such as the 200th discharge capacity is 184.3 mAh·g−1 under 1C, with a capacity retention rate of 87.6 %. This paper is beneficial for enriching the existing theoretical findings and discoveries, providing theoretical guidance for the preparation of high-performance material.

Modulation of p-Block Electron Orbits in Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Capture and Electrochemical Reduction.

Developing catalysts with excellent CO2 capture capability and electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) at a wide potential range simultaneously is significant but remains a formidable challenge. Here, two novel InMg defective trinuclear cluster-based MOFs (SNNU-41 and SNNU-42) with abundant p-block unsaturated coordinated sites were reported and exhibited good CO2 capture and CO2RR performance simultaneously. Due to the suitable micropores, SNNU-41 showed higher CO2 capture ability at different adsorption pressure conditions. On account of the rigid framework and the closer p band center to Fermi level, SNNU-42 accelerated the conversion of CO2 molecule to C1 efficiency. Notably, via adjusting the ratio of p-block metal (In) in the SNNU-42 framework, the performance of the CO2RR was promoted drastically. SNNU-42 with the InMg (1:1.8) mixed cluster delivered an excellent Faradaic efficiency of 91.3% for C1 products and high selectivity of 72.0% for HCOOH at -2.5 V (vs Ag/Ag+) with a total current density of 77.2 mA cm-2. This work provides a possibility for efficient CO2 capture and CO2RR electrocatalysts through the modulation of electronic structures and composition in MOFs.

Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in aqueous media using magnesium-substituted copper ferrite as a magnetic catalyst

In this study, copper nanosized ferrites substituted with magnesium ions were synthesized using the sol-gel self-combustion method, with polyethylene glycol (MW 2000) serving as both fuel and chelating agent. Structural properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction. It was confirmed that all samples crystallized as cubic spinels with space group Fd3m. Optical studies showed band gaps increasing from 1.51 eV for CuFe2O4 to 1.62 eV for MgFe2O4, suggesting modifications in electronic structure due to magnesium substitution. Photocatalytic studies revealed that CuFe2O4 exhibited the most efficient degradation of Methylene Blue dye, with near-complete degradation at 160 minutes. Magnesium-substituted samples (x = 0.4 and x = 0.6) also showed significant degradation, though at a slower rate compared to pure CuFe2O4. Photocatalytic performance, particularly in degrading Methylene Blue, was evaluated using various kinetic models such as First- and Second-Order Kinetics, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, and the two-parameter Weibull distribution.

Laser Irradiation Induced Electronic Structure Modulation of the Palladium‐Based Nanosheets for Efficient Electrocatalysts

AbstractPalladium nanosheets (Pd NSs) are widely used as electrocatalysts due to their high atomic utilization efficiency, and long‐term stability. Here, the electronic structure modulation of the Pd NSs is realized by a femtosecond laser irradiation strategy. Experimental results indicate that laser irradiation induces the variation in the atomic structures and the macrostrain effects in the Pd NSs. The electronic structure of Pd NSs is modulated by laser irradiation through the balancing between Au–Pd charge transfer and the macros‐strain effects. Finite element analysis (FEA) indicates that the lattice of the nanostructures undergoes fast heating and cooling during laser irradiation. The structural evolution mechanism is disclosed by a combined FEA and molecule dynamics (MD) simulation. These results coincide well with the experimental results. The L‐AuPd NSs exhibit excellent mass activity and specific activity of 7.44 A mg‐1 Pd and 18.70 mA cm−2 toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), 4.3 and 4.4 times higher than the commercial Pd/C. The 2500‐cycle accelerated durability (ADT) test confirms the outstanding catalytic stability of the L‐AuPd NSs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the catalytic mechanism. This unique strategy provides a new pathway to design the ultrathin nanosheet‐based materials with excellent performance.

Perovskite quantum dots/WSe2 mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure for photoelectric enhancement and polarization sensitivity

The performance of some heterostructures based devices is limited by strong interlayer coupling and limited electronic structure modulation. Meanwhile, the detection of polarized light holds great significance in future photoelectric fields such as cryptography. In this work, zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure (MvdWH) polarization-sensitive photodetector composed of solution-synthesized CH3NH3PbI3(MAPbI3) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown WSe2 was designed, forming a type II band structure. The MvdWH effectively enhance the carrier transmission rate, and improve the efficiency of charge separation, realizing an ultra-high responsiveness of 217.8 A/W and an ultrasensitive photodetectivity of 2.56 × 1011 Jones under 633 nm illumination. The device shows ultra-fast response times of 4.5/4.9 μs, which is due to the introduction of 0D QDs will shorten the electron transport path and reduces trap-mediated non-radiative recombination. Further, the in-plane anisotropy of MAPbI3 QDs was identified by angle-resolved absorption spectroscopy and angle-resolved polarization Raman spectroscopy, respectively. The MAPbI3/WSe2 device exhibits polarization-sensitive optoelectronic detection with an anisotropy ratio of 1.71, and powerful polarization-sensitive imaging ability, implying that MAPbI3 QDs endows the device with polarization detection and imaging capabilities. These results indicate that the construction of 0D/2D MvdWH opens a new avenue for ultrasensitive and polarization-sensitive photodetection, which depicts opportunities for designing multifunctional, high-performance imaging optoelectronic devices.

Geometric and Electronic Structure Modulation to Optimize the Charge Transfer of TiO2 for Ultrasensitive and Stable SERS Sensing.

Exploring the relationship between semiconductor structure and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity was essential for the development of ultrasensitive SERS substrates. Herein, we report an ytterbium atomic doping strategy to render TiO2 (Yb-TiO2) highly SERS sensitive superior to pure TiO2, with a detection limit as low as 1 × 10-9 M for 4-mercaptobenzoic acid. First-principles density functional theory calculations reveal that ytterbium doping leads to high electrostatic properties, allowing for significant charge transfer from molecules to semiconductors. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that Yb-TiO2 has a smaller band gap and higher density of states, which effectively enhance charge transfer between molecules and substrates, resulting in significant SERS activity. More importantly, Yb-TiO2 was particularly stable in air and acid solution and can be used for trace molecule detection in extreme environments. We demonstrate a promising approach to construct ultrasensitive SERS by optimizing the electronic structure induced by geometric structures.

Towards the scalable synthesis of two-dimensional heterostructures and superlattices beyond exfoliation and restacking.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, which feature atomically thin geometry and dangling-bond-free surfaces, have attracted intense interest for diverse technology applications, including ultra-miniaturized transistors towards the subnanometre scale. A straightforward exfoliation-and-restacking approach has been widely used for nearly arbitrary assembly of diverse two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures, superlattices and moiré superlattices, providing a versatile materials platform for fundamental investigations of exotic physical phenomena and proof-of-concept device demonstrations. While this approach has contributed importantly to the recent flourishing of 2D materials research, it is clearly unsuitable for practical technologies. Capturing the full potential of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides requires robust and scalable synthesis of these atomically thin materials and their heterostructures with designable spatial modulation of chemical compositions and electronic structures. The extreme aspect ratio, lack of intrinsic substrate and highly delicate nature of the atomically thin crystals present fundamental difficulties in material synthesis. Here we summarize the key challenges, highlight current advances and outline opportunities in the scalable synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenide-based heterostructures, superlattices and moiré superlattices.

Modulation of electronic structures and transport properties in 2D TM0.5Ga1.5O3 (TM = Al, Ga, In)

In this study, the band structures, density of states and transport properties of two-dimensional (2D) TM0.5Ga1.5O3 (TM=Al, Ga, In) are investigated by the first principle and the deformation potential theory. Both 2D Al0.5Ga1.5O3 and 2D In0.5Ga1.5O3 alloys tend to form under poor-oxygen conditions. Compared to bulk Ga2O3, the bandgap of 2D Ga2O3 is increased by 0.382 eV and its electron mobility is significantly increased from 143.352cm2·V−1·s−1 to 1486.638cm2·V−1·s−1. For 2D Al0.5Ga1.5O3, the bandgap and the electron effective mass are larger than those of 2D Ga2O3, but its electron mobility is reduced by >25%. In contrast, the bandgap of 2D In0.5Ga1.5O3 is narrower than that of 2D Ga2O3 while its electron mobility is increased by >52%, reaching 2262.901cm2·V−1·s−1. Therefore, 2D In0.5Ga1.5O3 has great potential to be used as a transport material for high-speed Ga2O3 electronic devices.

Facile synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-zirconium oxide/zinc oxide nanocomposites for effective antimicrobial and cytotoxic applications

In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was successfully synthesised and impregnated with ZrO2-activated ZnO nanoparticles using facile chemical technique to obtain rGO-ZrO2/ZnO nanocomposites for effective biomedical applications. Fourier transform infra-red and X-ray diffraction results were authorized the rGO-ZrO2-ZnO nanocomposites formulation. Scanning electron micrographs showed wrinkled sheets integration of agglomerated spherical grains with hillocks and voids for rGO-ZrO2/ZnO. UV–vis and photoluminescence spectral results proved the modulated electronic structure in the nanocomposites. An extensive investigation was done for synthesised rGO, ZnO, rGO-ZnO and rGO-ZrO2/ZnO against human lung cancer (A549) cell lines. The exposed outcomes revealed the high cytotoxic behaviour against the cancer cell lines by the rGO-ZrO2/ZnO nanocomposites. Moreover, the antimicrobial efficacy of rGO-ZrO2/ZnO nanocomposites exhibited a potential bactericidal effect against S. aureus and E. coli organisms related to rGO-ZnO. Thus, the synthesised rGO-ZrO2/ZnO nanocomposites depicted high, thermal stability and potential bactericidal properties which could be the possible candidate for effective biomedical applications.

Co-Co6Mo6C2 heterostructure grown on carbon nanofibers as tri-functional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting and rechargeable Zn-air batteries

The advancement of cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for the progress of clean energy conversion and storage technologies. In this work, cobalt (Co) and cobalt-molybdenum (Mo) bimetallic carbide (Co6Mo6C2) heterostructure grown on carbon nanofibers (denoted as Co-Co6Mo6C2/CNFs) as tri-functional electrocatalyst were prepared by a four-step method. Benefiting from the electronic structure modulation between the heterostructure to improve the catalytic activity, Co-Co6Mo6C2/CNFs exhibits high catalytic activity for HER (91 mV @ 10 mA cm−2), OER (293 mV @ 10 mA cm−2) and ORR (E1/2=0.80 V). Moreover, Co-Co6Mo6C2/CNFs assembled overall water splitting electrolyzer achieves a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a battery voltage of only 1.70 V and has long-term durability. Zn-air batteries (ZABs) based on Co-Co6Mo6C2/CNFs has a power density of 156.6 mW cm−2 with good stability. This study contributes to the development of inexpensive and efficient transition metal-based multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Exploring the role of redox-active species on NiS-NiS2 incorporated sulfur-doped graphitic carbon nitride nanohybrid as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

The advancement of effective and robust catalysts that can replace the precious-metal-based benchmarks for electrocatalytic overall water splitting is a highly fashionable approach to exploring sustainable energy utilization and addressing environmental issues. Herein, we demonstrate a facile single-step fabrication of NiS-NiS2 nanoparticles in situ grown on the layered porous sulfur-doped graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (NiS-NiS2/SGCN) act as bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline medium.Further, an increasing the Ni precursor (fixed sulfur source) increases the formation of NiS-NiS2 on the surface of SGCN (labeled as NS-1.0, NS-2.0, and NS-3.0). Structural and morphological studies such as PXRD, XPS, FTIR, HR-TEM, etc., revealed a uniform distribution of NiS/NiS2 on the surface of S-g-C3N4 nanosheets. The OER and HER activity of NiS-NiS2/SGCN nanohybrid were significantly enhanced by increasing the affinity of accessible surface-active edge sites, interfacial contact allows effective modification of electronic structure, high structural porosity, redox-active centers of Ni2+/Ni3+, and rich in sulfur vacancy. In addition, the enhancement of the exposure of the edge sites is improved by their attachment to a sulfur-doped g-C3N4 framework. As a result, in the half-cell experiments, the NiS-NiS2/SGCN (NS-3.0) catalyst exhibited enhanced performance in both OER and HER, requiring an overpotential of 298 mV to reach 50 mA/cm2 for OER and −144 mV to reach 10 mA/cm2 for HER. Furthermore, the constructed electrolyzer using Ni-S 3.0 as the cathode and anode required a cell voltage of 1.66 V to yield 50 mA/cm2 in overall water splitting. This study may inspire the in-situ synthesis of different metal sulfides on SGCN to provide a unique interfacial approach for improving the performance of bifunctional non-precious electrocatalysts.
