Our society’s view of the value of different occupations still seems to be shaped by dualistic traditions that conceive mind and body as different entities. This view of human nature is often connected to a devaluation of physical labor and craftsmanship which in turn makes it difficult to attract young people to the craft sector. Monistic-naturalistic ideas, which do not separate mind and body and which find one of their most important protagonists in the Dutch philosopher Spinoza, come to a different perspective. Moreover, in modern human research they are receiving much more recognition than the dualistic tradition. This should also foster a new perspective on the social recognition of craftsmanship.
