The Application of Traditional Plant Patterns in Modern Clothing Design

The development of traditional Chinese patterns is closely related to social development. As a part of traditional Chinese patterns, the application of plant patterns in costume design is also closely related to politics, economy, and culture. The application of plant patterns in costume design in different dynasties has different characteristics. It has become an indispensable part of dress design, and the formed dress culture has a profound influence on modern dress design. The application of traditional plant patterns in modern clothing design can not only increase the beauty and cultural connotation of clothing but also bring the meaning of purifying the soul and edifying the sentiment to the viewers and users. Therefore, based on discussing the development of traditional plant patterns in clothing design, this paper analyzes the meaning of traditional plant patterns in clothing design and puts forward effective strategies to do a good job in the application of traditional plant patterns in modern clothing design.

EVER REVOLVING MODERN NIGERIAN FASHION

Fashion revolves in circle, reflecting historical, cultural, political, economical and social life of a nation as noted by Ogunduyile. It hence, satisfies the apparel accessory wants and needs of the people at a given period of time, thereby reflecting man’s environment, and stands as a means of non-verbal communication in revealing the culture and history of a people. Thus, it is innovative and reflects popular values of the society and changes when such values change. However, Nigeria as a country is not an exception to this norm. Although, desirable and inevitable the Nigeria modern fashion may be, the pace and degree of changes in contemporary Nigeria fashion necessitated by the influx of foreign cultures has continued to put traditional Nigerian hand-woven fabrics such as Akwa-Ocha, Aso-Oke, and Akwete among others in an adverse situation since designers use less of these fabrics for modern dress styles. The paper discusses Modern Nigerian Fashion as it has kept revolving and changing since the 1960s till date.

The Application of Traditional Hakka Clothing Cultural Elements in Modern Clothing Design in Western Fujian Based on Image Feature Extraction Technology

Abstract In this paper, by applying the SIFT algorithm to the color category, texture and shape features of the dress pattern image for feature extraction and eliminating the low contrast texture feature points of the Taylor series expansion, using the statistics of the grayscale covariance matrix as the texture features. Based on the SIFT algorithm, the SURF feature extraction algorithm is proposed. The ideas of the Hessian matrix, determinant value approximation (DoH) and integral image (IGI) classifier are integrated to construct the feature fusion algorithm. Finally, the experimental results of several algorithms are compared and analyzed by taking the traditional dress pattern of the western Fujian Hakka family as the experimental object. The results show that among all the fusion algorithms, the SURF+IGI algorithm achieves an average recognition rate of 0.8914, which is the best performance. And the AUC value of its test set is 0.9445 when the learning rate is 0.005. The research in this paper meets the demand of extracting and applying the cultural elements of the traditional dresses of the Hakka family in western Fujian in modern dress design.

The Influence of Chinese Traditional Costumes on Contemporary Trends --Taking Horse-face Skirts as an Example

This study explores the influence of traditional Chinese dresses on contemporary fashion trends using the Horse-face skirt as an example. In ancient China, the Horse-face skirt was one of the notable skirts for women and maintained its typical style of womens dress during the Ming and Qing dynasties. With the passage of history and the revival of traditional Chinese culture, it has begun to arouse interest in traditional Chinese dress. Among them, Hanfu, including the Horse-face skirt, has attracted significant attention in modern dress, where ancient design elements are combined with modern dress. Through a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature, historical documents, and fashion resources, this study analyzes the development of the Horse-face skirt and its influence on contemporary fashion trends. The study shows that the development of new media, the spread of ethnic culture and the innovation of ethnic dress are important factors that contribute to the development of ancient traditional dresses influencing modern trends.

Application of multi-source data fusion of modern dress design with the artistic elements of Chinese embroidery

Abstract This paper first investigates the method of extracting features from Chinese embroidery art images, including preprocessing, filtering, and enhancement steps. Then, the multi-classification recognition technique based on an improved support vector machine is used to classify and recognize different modern dress designs. Non-iterative and conjugate orthogonal algorithms are proposed for a feature fusion method based on partial least squares analysis. In the performance analysis part, the performance of feature extraction classification, data fusion energy, and fused data noise are evaluated. Lastly, the impact of the dress style generation map incorporating fused Chinese embroidery elements is analyzed. The study shows that the method in this paper can save 33.4 J of energy consumption after running for 250 s compared with the popular learning-based method. At least a 10% improvement in the number of dress style graphs that interest social event participants, etiquette service practitioners, and performers was achieved after multiple training iterations.

It’s All Because of the Classics: Yesterday’s Today’s Inspiration Cinderella Wore A Modern Dress

The Classics remain to be an inspiration for modern works of art. One typical example is the Classic fairy tale Cinderella which has been retold and reimagined in various ways but has maintained its Classic flavor that blends well with its modern recipes. In our highly digitized world, the Classics are depicted in a modern format called the visual novel. This study tackled Victor Shklovsky’s defamiliarization to show the familiar and unfamiliar in a modern recommunicated version of Cinderella known as Cinders, a visual novel digital platform demonstrating how this contemporary work of art is inspired by the Classics. Likewise, this paper is hinged on Stephen Jay Greenblatt’s New Historicism framework to investigate the historical developments of a Classic tale like Cinderella evolving into its eponym Cinders who wears the modern dress of a visual novel in conformity with the Millennial fashion of digitized fairy tale writing’s format, platform, and presentation. The use of Karl Marx’s and Friedrich Engel’s Cultural Materialism in this study proves how perspectives about material wealth are being differently viewed by key characters as they vigorously pursue their personal goals. Melding with these literary frameworks is the researcher’s improvisation of three (3) guiding stars as the compass that helped uncover Cinders’s Classic spark, Classic vestiges, and Millennial or Contemporary Differences from its Classic inspirer Cinderella. Finally, this undertaking discussed the contrasts between book reading of a Classic work including the digital reading and playing of a Classic reincarnated version to cap this researcher’s scholarly journey.

Archaeology and Quality of Life in Central-European, Pre-Industrial Towns (Fourteenth to Eighteenth Centuries)

Diversification of standards of living in modern societies is one of the main research topics for economists and sociologists. Usually, economic inequalities are considered to be a natural phenomenon which trigger further progress and, in moderate amounts, are socially acceptable. However, deep inequalities are unjust and destructive and lead to conflicts. The research of contemporary inequalities in living standards mainly focuses on defining their source and their social and economic implications. The issue of social inequalities in pre-industrial societies is researched in a similar way, but requires different methods and data sources. The purpose of this paper is to determine the usefulness of archaeology in the research of diversification of living standards in Central-European cities at the end of Middle Ages and in the Early Modern era. As a case study we discuss the consumption strategies of Late Medieval and Early Modern dress accessories from different burgher plots in Prague (modern Czech Republic) and Wrocław (modern Poland) as an introduction for broader research.

Georg Jensen is best known as a silversmith and as the founder of his namesake company, today a global brand. But Jensen also made and exhibited ceramics— first large-scale sculptures and then smaller vessels decorated with flora, fauna, and sometimes people. With his frequent collaborator Christian Joachim, Jensen designed an earthenware jar, simple in form save for the sculpted figure of a woman donning modern dress and hairstyle, who protrudes from the top of the handle and seems to tiptoe across the edge of the jar’s top lip (Fig. 1). The Relevance of Modern Islamic Boarding Schools with Ulama Cadre According to Imam Zarkasyi (1910-1985)

Imam Zarkasyi was a figure who gave birth to the modern pesantren and ulama cadre in Indonesia. This review is based on literature research with a historical approach. The sources of information depart from the biography and the concept of thought, the methods and information instrumentation from books, papers, posts, magazines, websites, and other types of documentation. The information was analyzed using management systems that can draw information from documentation. Relevant data sourced from works on the topic were analyzed descriptively. The research results are 1) based on "Pondok Modern Synthesis," 2) aiming to produce students who are ready for society, 3) changing the traditional integrity system to the classical boarding school system, 4) presenting educational methods with direction, training, assignments, habituation, guards, role model, and approaches, 5) integrating curriculum with religious material, general material, and language proficiency, 6) forming a waqf body to minimize disputes over ownership and decision making, 7) instilling the psychological value, the Motto of the boarding school, and the philosophy of life, and 8) changing the pattern in appearance from shabby to a modern dress style. This study indicates that modern pesantren as an educational institution has been well-managed and provides great impacts on students or santri as cadres of scholars who are educated to become the next ulama's successors.

Introduction

In Britain, from the nineteenth century onwards, the default ‘setting’ for Shakespeare’s plays (by which I mean costume, mise-en-scène, and assumed historical and cultural context) has been medieval and early modern: the time of the plays’ composition (late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries) or the time of their historical location (medieval Britain or Europe, ancient Greece or Rome, etc.). In this visual and physical context, Twelfth Night would normally be performed or imagined in Elizabethan or Jacobean, Macbeth and Hamlet in medieval, Julius Caesar in ancient Roman dress and settings. In the historical context of their original production, the plays were performed in contemporary dress with minimal mise-en-scène; through the Restoration and eighteenth century in fashionable modern dress and increasingly naturalistic settings. Today in Britain, Shakespeare can be performed in any style of costume, setting and cultural context, from the time of the plays’ reference to the immediate contemporary present, and often in an eclectic blend of some or all. But strong forces of tradition and cultural memory tie the plays, in their visual and physical realisation as well as their language, to the medieval and early modern past. We see this attachment in film versions of the plays and of Shakespeare’s life. We dress Shakespeare in the costumes of all the ages, but we know that he truly belongs, as in the various portraits, in doublet and ruff.

Challenges in Displaying Archaeological and Historic Vestments from the Collections of the National Museum of Transylvanian History

"The focus of this paper is represented by the display of female and male clothing pieces as well as luxurious ornaments, from the premodern and modern collections of The National History Museum of Transylvania, as exhibited in the temporary exhibition Cornucopia. Luxury in Transylvanian noble world.1 The aim is to underline the challenges the conservators had in mounting the items of dress, while considering the conservation restrictions (the mounting would not damage the object) as well as display requirements (an appropriate arranging of historic clothing). In order to properly display the dresses’ relationship with the human silhouette and due to the fact that some of the objects required prior restoration, the mounting itself proved to be extremely challenging. Since the exhibition’s curators had to work with a tight budget, that also meant that the costumes had to be mounted on standard sized, commercially available dress stands, as opposed to acquiring ‘museum mannequins,’ specifically designed to dress every individual object. Therefore, modern dress stands were adapted to fit the historical and archaeological garments: they were carved, cut‑down, padded, while under‑structures were created using horizontal and vertical tubes of cotton filled with puffed wadding sewn onto the inside of an underskirt‑like structure; as a result, the mounted mannequins, captured the body‑dress relationship the curators wanted, while, at the same time, considering the conservation and display requirements."

Colonialism in its modern dress: post-colonial narratives in EUrope-Indonesia relations

This article argues that Indonesia-EU economic relations have been accompanied by a post-colonial narrative, which has led to a transposition of anti-colonial sentiment towards the Netherlands to the EU as a whole. The post-colonial theoretical approach adopted assumes that human beings create meaning through narratives to make sense of the world that surrounds us, and that national histories contain narratives that legitimate the existence of nation-states. Through a study of Indonesian nationalism and the place of the EUropean in it, the article shows how economic relations between Indonesia and the EU have been shaped historically. It will be demonstrated how since Indonesia’s independence encounters between Indonesia and Europe has been accompanied by the experience of past colonization by an EU member state. This, it is argued, is the result of nation-building in Indonesia, whereby the other was needed to construct solidarity among its members. At present, so the article concludes, although progress has been achieved in Indonesia-EU relations, the self-image of the EU as a force for good has not reached Indonesia’s shores.

The Gran Ballo Sport: The Apotheosis of Sport at La Scala1

In 1897 Milan’s La Scala Theatre mounted a massive narrative ballet entitled simply Sport. It was a celebration in dance and spectacle of such activities as mountain climbing, horseracing, skating, gymnastics, hunting, and cycling. The ‘gran ballo’ featured some 300 dancers, an orchestra of 100 augmented by a brass band of 30, mimes, live horses and other assorted supernumeraries. The ballet was partly inspired by the 1896 Olympic Games which raised Italian interest in sport as well as encouraging a strong sense of internationalism. Sport consisted of six scenes, each taking place in a different region of the world, from Canada to Europe. Sport was an example of an ‘up-to-date’ ballet which tackled modern fads and issues; it also starred dancers who wore modern dress rather than tutus and tights. Its revolutionary plot acclaimed both feminism and women’s participation in games. The grand finale consisted of a march of hundreds of real athletes and a spectacular ‘Apotheosis of Sport.’

Health Hazards

Studies of early modern dress frequently focus on its connection with status and identity, overlooking clothing’s primary function, namely to protect the body and promote good health. The daily processes of dressing and undressing carried numerous considerations: for example, were vital areas of the body sufficiently covered, in the correct fabrics and colours, in order to maintain an ideal body temperature? The health benefits of clothing were countered by the many dangers it carried, such as toxic dyes, garments that were either too tight or voluminous, or harboured dirt and diseases that could infect the body. This article draws on medical treatises and health manuals printed and read in Italy and England, as well as personal correspondence and diaries, contextualised with visual evidence of the styles described. It builds on the current, wider interest in preventative medicine, humoral theory, health and the body in the early modern period by focusing in depth on the role of clothing within these debates.

서양 근세 복식에 나타난 재료의 재구성 분석 : 르네상스부터 로코코까지 복식 텍스츄어의 시각적 촉각성을 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to analyze the reconstitution of materials which started to appear in Western dress designs from the Renaissance era to the Rococo era, focusing on the visual tactility of texture. The research includes a literature survey and content analysis to probe the following three research questions. How do the material reconstitution techniques appear as classified in the dress texture? What are the characteristics of early modern dress textures and the applied techniques? What are the features of visual tactility from the Renaissance era to the Rococo era, using the extracted reconstitution ratio as the point of comparison? This study answers these questions by analyzing the reconstitution techniques of materials and their characteristics through 487 photos gathered from books and museum collections published between the 15th and 18th centuries.BR As a result of the analysis, the techniques can be divided into frontal and multifaceted reconstitutions, based on their frontality and their multifaceted nature. These were in further subdivided as “low-relief texture,” “high-relief texture,” “cut-style texture,” and “attachment-style texture,” depending on the properties of surface texture. The study classified the reconstitution of materials used in early modern Western dresses as “one-dimensional visual tactility,” “two-dimensional visual tactility,” and “three-dimensional visual tactility,” based on the material and technique applied. Consequently, the reconstitution of materials in the Renaissance era dresses were mostly comprised of two-dimensional visual tactility using a single technique to build a three-dimensional silhouette. In contrast, the surface combination of qualitatively different materials created a preponderance of three-dimensional visual tactility in the Baroque era. Lastly, Rococo dresses exhibited a prevalence of two-dimensional visual tactility to establish artificial forms and three-dimensional visual tactility emphasizing flexible decorativeness.
