Real-time regulation of detention ponds via feedback control: Balancing flood mitigation and water quality

Detention ponds can mitigate flooding and improve water quality by allowing the settlement of pollutants. Typically, they are operated with fully open orifices and weirs (i.e., passive control). Active controls can improve the performance of these systems: orifices can be retrofitted with controlled valves, and spillways can have controllable gates. The real-time optimal operation of its hydraulic devices can be achieved with techniques such as Model Predictive Control (MPC). A distributed quasi-2D hydrologic-hydrodynamic coupled with a reservoir flood routing model is developed and integrated with an MPC algorithm to estimate the operation of valves and movable gates in real-time. The control optimization problem is adapted to switch from a flood-related algorithm focusing on mitigating floods to a heuristic objective function that aims to increase the detention time when no inflow hydrographs are predicted. The case studies show the potential results of applying the methods developed in a catchment in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The performance of MPC compared to alternatives that do not change the operation over time with either fully or partially open valves and gates are tested. Comparisons with HEC-RAS 2D indicate volume and peak flow errors of approximately 1.4% and 0.91% for the watershed module. Simulating two consecutive 10-year storms shows that the MPC strategy can achieve peak flow reductions of 79%. In contrast, the passive scenario has nearly half of the performance (41%). A 1-year continuous simulation results show that the passive scenario with 25% of the valves opened can treat 12% more runoff compared to the developed MPC approach, with an average detention time of approximately 6 h. For the MPC approach, however, the average detention time is nearly 14 h, indicating that both control techniques can treat similar volumes; however, the proxy water quality for the MPC approach is enhanced due to the longer detention times achieved.

Impact of data for forecasting on performance of model predictive control in buildings with smart energy storage

Data is required to develop forecasting models for use in Model Predictive Control (MPC) schemes in building energy systems. However, data is costly to both collect and exploit. Determining cost optimal data usage strategies requires understanding of the forecast accuracy and resulting MPC operational performance it enables. This study investigates the performance of both simple and state-of-the-art machine learning prediction models for MPC in multi-building energy systems using a simulated case study with historic building energy data. The impact on forecast accuracy of measures to improve model data efficiency is quantified, specifically for: reuse of prediction models, reduction of training data duration, reduction of model data features, and online model training. A simple linear multi-layer perceptron model is shown to provide equivalent forecast accuracy to state-of-the-art models, with greater data efficiency and generalisability. The use of more than 2 years of training data for load prediction models provided no significant improvement in forecast accuracy. Forecast accuracy and data efficiency were improved simultaneously by using change-point analysis to screen training data. Reused models and those trained with 3 months of data had on average 10% higher error than baseline, indicating that deploying MPC systems without prior data collection may be economic.

Improved Model-Free Predictive Control of a Three-Phase Inverter

Model predictive control (MPC) performance depends on the accuracy of the system model. Moreover, the optimization algorithm of MPC requires numerous online computations. These inherent limitations of MPC hinder its application in power electronics systems. This paper proposes a two-part solution for these challenges for a three-phase inverter with an output LC filter. The first part of the control scheme is a linear and modified model-free approach based on the auto-regressive structure (ARX) with exogenous input. The second part is the computationally efficient optimization algorithm based on the active set method to solve the optimization problem of the MFPC. The objective of the control scheme is to regulate the output voltages of the inverter in the presence of constraints. The constraints are the maximum admissible filter current and optimal duty cycle to avoid any damage to the system. To validate the performance of the proposed control scheme, simulations and hardware-in-loop (HIL) real-time investigations have been performed, comparing the results of the proposed approach with the model-based predictive control. The results showcase the computational efficiency and effectiveness of the MFPC approach, demonstrating its potential for overcoming the limitations of traditional MPC in power electronics systems.

Effect of prediction uncertainties on the performance of a white-box model predictive controller for district heating networks

The performance of a model predictive controller (MPC) depends on the accuracy of the controller model and predictions of system disturbances. This paper studies the effect of prediction uncertainties and/or an imperfect state observer on the performance of a white-box MPC applied to a small-scale district heating network by performing a co-simulation with a detailed emulator model. This effect is studied for both a non-linear program (NLP)-based MPC and a mixed-integer NLP (MINLP)-based MPC. The results show a limited impact of prediction uncertainties when using a perfect state observer, with electricity use and thermal discomfort changing by only ▪ to ▪ and ▪/day/building to 0.56 ▪/day/building. An MPC with perfect predictions and a simple state observer only impacts the MPC's trade-off between electricity use and thermal discomfort: the former increases by 2–▪ but the latter decreases by 0.01–▪/day/building. The combined effect of both simplifications has a significant impact with an increase in electricity use and thermal discomfort of 2–▪ and 0.35–▪/day/building, but MPC still outperforms a conventional rule-based controller. The MINLP-based MPC better predicts the actual system behaviour, but its performance is similar compared to the NLP-based MPC in terms of electrical energy use and thermal comfort.

Assessing the impact of the dataset’s size and quality on building thermal models for energy flexibility

The demand side is required to increase its energy flexibility to tackle the demand–supply mismatch caused by integration of renewable energy sources into the energy mix. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is one of the promising measures for achieving this goal. MPC requires operational data from the building to train its predictive model. The quality of this data affects the performance of MPC. This paper aims to analyze the impact of a dataset’s size and excitation method on flexibility harnessed by MPC. Five datasets have been generated that differ in their size and excitation method. They are used to train three modeling algorithms on two buildings. Next, generated predictive models are integrated into an MPC framework, to assess the impact of datasets on the performance of MPCs for activating the energy flexibility of a building. The case studies are two similar dwellings where one is equipped with Electric Heaters (EH), and the other uses an UnderFloor Heating (UFH) system. Results show that the flexibility of the EH case is more sensitive to the size of the dataset. Furthermore, it is shown that the suitability of the excitation signal for flexibility activation depends on the modeling algorithm. The results show that choosing an ill-suited dataset might cost the MPC 35 % and 20 % of the potential flexibility for EH and UFH cases, respectively.

Reduced complexity model predictive direct power control for unbalanced grid

The model predictive control (MPC) group is frequently used as a controller in PWM rectifiers because of its accuracy. Yet, the requirement of a processor with high computational efficiency for its real-time implementation has been a significant drawback. Although a few low-complexity MPCs have been reported in the past, none of such methods are validated in an unbalanced grid. Hence, this work aims to propose a reduced-complexity MPC algorithm that can also handle an unbalanced grid. The conventional MPC evaluates the cost function for all the switching vectors and then chooses the switching vector that produces the minimum cost. In contrast, by equating its first-order derivative of the cost function to 0, the proposed analytical approach directly evaluates switching vectors, resulting in a minimum value of the cost function. Thus, the controller estimates only the closest possible solutions of the cost function minimization process and abandons the rest. Furthermore, the proposed method also endorses the use of additional non-linear constraints in the cost function, which eradicates one of the major drawbacks of the previous low-complexity techniques. To ascertain the practicability of the proposed method, it is examined in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and the real-time system. The obtained results look promising as the proposed controller is able to imitate the performance of conventional MPC with less computational burden.

An event triggered control scheme for enhanced production of Escherichia coli and biomass concentration during fed-batch cultivation

Control of a bioprocess is a challenging task mainly due to the nonlinearity of the process, the complex nature of microorganisms, and variations in critical parameters such as temperature, pH, and agitator speed. Generally, the optimum values chosen for critical parameters during Escherichia coli (E.coli) K-12fed-batch fermentation are37 ᵒC for temperature, 7 for pH, and 35 % for Dissolved Oxygen (DO). The objective of this research is to enhance biomass concentration while minimizing energy consumption. To achieve this, an Event-Triggered Control (ETC) scheme based on feedback-feed forward control is proposed. The ETC system dynamically adjusts the substrate feed rate in response to variations in critical parameters. We compare the performance of classical Proportional Integral (PI) controllers and advanced Model Predictive Control (MPC) controllers in terms of bioprocess yield. Initially, the data are collected from a laboratory-scaled 3L bioreactor setup under fed-batch operating conditions, and data-driven models are developed using system identification techniques. Then, classical Proportional Integral (PI) and advanced Model Predictive Control (MPC) based feedback controllers are developed for controlling the yield of bioprocess by manipulating substrate flow rate, and their performances are compared. PI and MPC-based Event Triggered Feed Forward Controllers are designed to increase the yield and to suppress the effect of known disturbances due to critical parameters. Whenever there is a variation in the value of a critical parameter, it is considered an event, and ETC initiates a control action by manipulating the substrate feed rate. PI and MPC-based ETC controllers are developed in simulation, and their closed-loop performances are compared. It is observed that the Integral Square Error (ISE) is notably minimized to 4.668 for MPC with disturbance and 4.742 for MPC with Feed Forward Control. Similarly, the Integral Absolute Error (IAE) reduces to 2.453 for MPC with disturbance and 0.8124 for MPC with Feed Forward Control. The simulation results reveal that the MPC-based ETC control scheme enhances the biomass yield by 7 %, and this result is verified experimentally. This system dynamically adjusts the substrate feed rate in response to variations in critical parameters, which is a novel approach in the field of bioprocess control. Also, the proposed control schemes help reduce the frequency of communication between controller and actuator, which reduces power consumption.

Offset-Free Koopman Model Predictive Control of Thermal Comfort Regulation for a Variable Refrigerant Flow-Dedicated Outdoor Air System-Combined System

Abstract Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system has been an appealing solution of air conditioning for residential and commercial buildings, due to its flexibility and cost effectiveness, while lack of ventilation capability is a major drawback. Incorporation of dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) is a typical practice. However, good coordination between DOAS and VRF is critical for achieving desired thermal comfort is challenging due to the possible complexity of mixed sensible and latent heat exchanges. In this paper, to handle the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of VRF-DOAS system, we propose an offset-free Koopman model predictive control (MPC) strategy for thermal comfort regulation, in which the MPC design is computationally more efficient due to the convex problem formulation and the use of reduced-order Koopman models, and the offset-free MPC structure enhances the robustness to model uncertainties and unmeasured disturbances. A control-oriented model is obtained by hybridizing the first-principle and data-driven modeling approach. The proposed controls strategy is evaluated with a Modelica simulation model of a VRF-DOAS system. A Dymola-Python cosimulation platform is developed via the functional mockup interface (FMI), for which the MPC algorithms are implemented in Python. Simulation results show significantly better performance of the offset-free Koopman MPC in thermal comfort regulation.

On-board model predictive control for autonomous lane keeping with fuzzy preview distance: Design and experiment

This paper concerns with the development of computationally efficient lane keeping control method for the autonomous vehicles. To obtain autonomous lane keeping, model predictive control (MPC) scheme was intensively investigated in the previous studies owing to its inherent advantage of dealing with constrained multivariable systems. However, the tradeoff problem between the good tracking performance and the low computational complexity is inevitably raised in developing of MPC-based lane keeping technology. To alleviate the conflict between performance and cost, an on-board MPC with fuzzy preview distance is designed in this study. A linear system dynamics model is used in the MPC design to reduce the computational cost, and a fuzzy logic algorithm is developed to select an appropriate preview distance for enhancing the MPC performance. Further, hardware-in-the-loop test is adopted to explore the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed control method. In comparison to the proportional-integral controller, the experimental results show that the MPC is more sensitive to the selective value of fixed preview distance. Since the significant impact of preview distance selection on the MPC-based lane keeping performance, the fuzzy logic algorithm is of the essence in terms of selecting the appropriate preview distance for MPC enhancement under different vehicle speed and road curvature. Eventually, experimental results validate that the proposed fuzzy preview distance algorithm can effectively improve the MPC-based lane keeping performance for autonomous vehicles subject to limited computational resource.

Economic Performance of Model Predictive Control at Back-off Operating Point

In this paper, we address the economic performance of Model Predictive Control (MPC) while operating at a backed-off operating point. Operating the plant at a constrained optimal point will often cause constraint violations due to uncertainties such as disturbances and measurement errors, etc. To ensure dynamic feasibility, the concept of economic back-off is used. In this work, we select the set point as the economic back-off point such that the dynamic operating region should have the least variability in the active constrained variables while ensuring the feasibility of other variables. In other words, the dynamic operating region is oriented by the proper design of a controller such that variability in active constrained variables is as low as possible. This controller design can be transformed into equivalent objective function weights of the MPC controller. In this study, we demonstrate that the determined back-off point is optimal for both linear controller and MPC controller when there are no unconstrained degrees of freedom. For the case with unconstrained degrees of freedom, the back-off point determined using the presented approach is optimal only for a linear controller but suboptimal for an MPC controller. Demonstrative case studies are presented to illustrate the economic performance of the MPC controller at the determined economic back-off point.

Influence of usage and model inaccuracies on the performance of smart hot water heaters: lessons learned from a demand response field test

Domestic hot water heaters are considered to be easily integrated as flexible loads for demand response. While literature grows on reproducible simulation and lab tests, real-world implementation in field tests considering state estimation and demand prediction-based model predictive control approaches is rare. This work reports the findings of a field test with 16 autonomous smart domestic hot water heaters. The heaters were equipped with a retrofittable sensor/actuator setup and a real-time price-driven model predictive control unit, which covers state estimation, demand prediction, and optimization of switching times. With the introduction of generic performance indicators (specific costs and thermal efficiency), the results achieved in the field are compared by simulations to standard control modes (instantaneous heating, hysteresis, night-only switching). To evaluate how model predictive control performance depends on the user demand prediction and state estimation accuracy, simulations assuming perfect predictions and state estimations are conducted based on the data measured in the field. Results prove the feasible benefit of RTP-based model predictive control in the field compared to a hysteresis-based standard control regarding cost reduction and efficiency increase but show a strong dependency on the degree of utilization.

Unveiling overlooked aspects of model predictive control for building air conditioning systems

The ongoing research on model predictive control (MPC) for building air conditioning systems predominantly centers on improving the predictive capabilities of system models. In this paper, the impacts of three additional pivotal factors on MPC performance are assessed by examining a generic MPC design for a typical variable air volume (VAV) system that serves large commercial buildings. The three factors encompass the nuanced reformulation of optimization, the judicious relaxation of constraints, and the meticulous tuning of parameters. Detailed case studies with an integrated Modelica and EnergyPlus model of the US Department of Energy's Commercial Reference Building are conducted. The results confirm that the optimization formulation, along with relaxation methods, significantly affects MPC performance in terms of energy savings, zonal thermal comfort level, and computational demand. They also reveal that the impact of the MPC control parameters on the energy savings and thermal comfort may vary by season and can be non-monotonic.

Model predictive control (MPC) applied to a simplified model, magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia (MNPH) treatment process

Magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia (MNPH) has emerged as a promising cancer treatment that complements conventional ionizing radiation and chemotherapy. MNPH involves injecting iron-oxide nanoparticles into the tumor and exposing it to an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Iron oxide nanoparticles produce heat when exposed to radiofrequency AMF due to hysteresis loss. Minimizing the non-specific heating in human tissues caused by exposure to AMF is crucial. A pulse-width-modulated AMF has been shown to minimize eddy-current heating in superficial tissues. This project developed a control strategy based on a simplified mathematical model in MATLAB SIMULINK® to minimize eddy current heating while maintaining a therapeutic temperature in the tumor. A minimum tumor temperature of 43 [°C] is required for at least 30 [min] for effective hyperthermia, while maintaining the surrounding healthy tissues below 39 [°C]. A model predictive control (MPC) algorithm was used to reach the target temperature within approximately 100 [s]. As a constrained MPC approach, a maximum AMF amplitude of 36 [kA/m] and increment of 5 [kA/m/s] were applied. MPC utilized the AMF amplitude as an input and incorporated the open-loop response of the eddy current heating in its dynamic matrix. A conventional proportional integral (PI) controller was implemented and compared with the MPC performance. The results showed that MPC had a faster response (30 [s]) with minimal overshoot (1.4 [%]) than PI controller (115 [s] and 5.7 [%]) response. In addition, the MPC method performed better than the structured PI controller in its ability to handle constraints and changes in process parameters.

Discretionary Lane-Change Decision and Control via Parameterized Soft Actor–Critic for Hybrid Action Space

This study focuses on a crucial task in the field of autonomous driving, autonomous lane change. Autonomous lane change plays a pivotal role in improving traffic flow, alleviating driver burden, and reducing the risk of traffic accidents. However, due to the complexity and uncertainty of lane-change scenarios, the functionality of autonomous lane change still faces challenges. In this research, we conducted autonomous lane-change simulations using both deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and model predictive control (MPC). Specifically, we used the parameterized soft actor–critic (PASAC) algorithm to train a DRL-based lane-change strategy to output both discrete lane-change decisions and continuous longitudinal vehicle acceleration. We also used MPC for lane selection based on the smallest predictive car-following costs for the different lanes. For the first time, we compared the performance of DRL and MPC in the context of lane-change decisions. The simulation results indicated that, under the same reward/cost function and traffic flow, both MPC and PASAC achieved a collision rate of 0%. PASAC demonstrated a comparable performance to MPC in terms of average rewards/costs and vehicle speeds.

Cooperative control strategy of trajectory tracking and driving stability for distributed-drive vehicles under extreme conditions

Active chassis dynamics control has become increasingly important in recent years for achieving high-level automated driving of intelligent electric vehicles. To improve tracking performance of the commonly-used model predictive control (MPC) in extreme scenarios, such as emergency lane changing, an improved MPC motion stability controller (MPC_ISMC) based on sliding mode variable structure active steering control and differential torque yaw control is proposed. Firstly, an MPC-based trajectory tracking controller is designed to track the desired trajectory. Subsequently, active front-wheel steering (AFS) and direct yaw moment (DYC) controllers are designed by using the backstepping sliding mode variable structure and the adaptive super-twisting sliding mode variable structure, respectively. Moreover, a cooperative control law for the AFS and the DYC is formulated by the smooth switching function and intervention intensity factor with respect to vehicle stable state and trajectory tracking error. After that, a torque distribution scheme of four wheels is optimized to achieve the additional yaw moment target. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed cooperative control strategy is validated using a hardware-in-the-loop platform. The results indicate that the proposed controller has better performance in trajectory tracking and vehicle stability under extreme conditions compared with traditional MPC and other methods.

Assessment of Storage Sizing for Solar Tower Plants Using Model-Predictive Control for Dispatch Planning

Abstract Solar tower with thermal energy storage (ST-TES) represents a promising technology for large-scale exploitation of solar irradiation for electricity generation. A ST-TES has the potential to extend electricity generation to more favorable conditions, such as high electricity prices. The size of TES, however, constrains the flexibility of dispatching, especially when there is significant uncertainty in forecasts of solar irradiation and electricity prices. This study explores the impact of TES size when the plant uses model-predictive control (MPC) for dispatch planning. The performance of MPC is benchmarked against one perfect knowledge (PK) and two day-ahead strategies. The optimal achievable profit for each TES size is determined using the PK strategy. An analysis is conducted to evaluate the relative profit losses for all the other simulated strategies compared to the PK strategy. A case study is conducted for a hypothetical 115 MWe ST-TES in South Australia. For January and August, 100 tests are performed for each dispatch policy, with the TES size varying from 6 to 14 h. The revenue evaluation is conducted with both fixed and wholesale spot prices. The analysis shows that MPC-aided dispatching enables the adoption of a smaller TES compared to day-ahead policies while maintaining the same expected profit. The resulting TES size reduction from 14 to 10 h translates into approximately up to $45.4 million in capital cost savings. The findings of this study can inform the ST-TES plant’s design procedures and facilitate negotiations for electricity sales contracts.

Comparison of time-invariant and adaptive linear grey-box models for model predictive control of residential buildings

Model predictive control (MPC) is a promising optimal control technique for activating building energy flexibility using its thermal mass. The performance of the MPC controller is directly related to the accuracy of the model prediction. Grey-box models, based on physical laws and calibrated on measurement data, are commonly used to represent the building thermal dynamics in MPC. Most research works use Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) grey-box models even though weather conditions vary significantly throughout the heating season. This is critical as inaccurate model prediction can lead to a lower performance of the MPC controller. This study introduces two adaptive MPC schemes to overcome this limitation of LTI models. The first one, called the Partially Adaptive MPC, only updates the effective window area of the prediction model. The second one, called the Fully Adaptive MPC, updates all the parameters of the grey-box model. The adaptive MPC performance is compared with MPC using LTI models in two different tests. The simulation-based results show that MPC based on LTI performs well if the control model is trained during a period with similar weather conditions as the period when the MPC will be applied. The Partially Adaptive MPC is unable to deliver satisfactory prediction performance due to the limited number of parameters that are updated. The Fully Adaptive MPC has the best performance compared to the other MPCs, especially as it avoids thermal comfort violations.

Designing a Model Predictive Controller for Displacement Control of Axial Piston Pump

Variable displacement hydraulic pumps are widely used for energy efficiency, and they often have a mechanical feedback mechanism to ensure target tracking control performance and stability of tilt angle control. Furthermore, there are many examples which add electronic control to realize higher tracking control performance. However, in such cases, the control performance is significantly affected by the dynamic characteristics of the mechanical feedback mechanism, and this problem prevent its widespread use. Additionally, tilt angle control is susceptible to changes in dynamic characteristics and load pressure depending on the operating point, and there are constraints on the tilt angle. Hence, high control performance cannot be obtained without considering these nonlinearities. In this study, the variable displacement pump without mechanical feedback mechanism is focused on, and the objective of this study is to design a displacement control system for a hydraulic pump based on a model predictive control (MPC) that can consider various constraints on the design step. An adaptive system, which handles changes in dynamic characteristics and the effects of load pressure, is introduced. Additionally, the control performance of adaptive MPC is compared to adaptive model matching-based MPC with inverse optimization that can optimally design the weight matrices of the evaluation function without trial and error. Furthermore, in order to improve the transient response, a variable control input constraints are added in these two control systems. Experimental results of control performance have shown that the proposed method achieved a high tracking performance and short settling time, which confirmed the effectiveness of the variable control input constraints.

An Impact of Switching Frequency and Model Accuracy on Model Predictive Current Control Performance for Reluctance Synchronous Motors

Abstract The present paper investigates the feasibility of utilizing the simplified prediction model for finite control set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC) applied to reluctance synchronous motors (RSMs). The FCS-MPCC exhibits torque and current ripples, and a crucial consideration is the reduction of these ripples by increasing the switching frequency. The algorithm’s computational complexity is tied to the accuracy of the adopted model. Two approaches with varying levels of accuracy in predicting current dependencies concerning changes in the inductance of the RSM are investigated. The findings highlight the potential of employing simplified fixed inductance values for efficient control in drive systems, particularly those amenable to high switching frequencies.
