Effects of 10 Weeks of Walking With Mobile Step-Tracking Apps on Body Composition, Fitness, and Psychological State in Adolescents Who Are Overweight and Obese: Randomized Controlled Trial.

In recent decades, physical activity intervention programs have been developed to reduce overweight and obesity in adolescents. However, this population is considered hard to reach in physical activity programs due to lack of adherence and poor results. Interventions with mobile phones in the adolescent population with normal weight have shown benefits, so this line of research may provide benefits in adolescents with overweight or obesity, although it has not yet been explored in the scientific literature. This study aims to determine the changes produced by a 10-week intervention promoted during school lessons on physical education using step tracker mobile apps in out-of-school hours on physical activity, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, body composition, and the physical condition of adolescents who are overweight and obese, and to analyze the changes achieved by the 10-week intervention on the psychological state of adolescents who are overweight and obese. The study was based on a randomized controlled trial with an initial sample of 50 adolescents aged between 12 and 16 years (from the first to the fourth years of compulsory secondary education), whose body composition, physical activity level, physical condition, and psychological state were measured. Participants were divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), where the EG performed a series of walking steps with a mobile app in their free time outside physical education classes. Adolescents in the CG continued to perform their physical activities as normal but did not use any mobile apps. Inclusion in the EG and CG was randomized, and the researchers were blinded. An increase was found in the EG in corrected arm girth (mean difference -0.46; P=.05), curl-up repetitions (mean difference -6.35; P=.02) and push-up repetitions (mean difference -2.27; P=.04) after the intervention. In the CG, there was a significant increase in hip girth (mean difference -1.37; P=.05), corrected thigh girth (mean difference -1.28; P=.04), and muscle mass (mean difference -0.87; P=.04), as well as a significant decrease in competence (mean difference 3.08; P=.03). The covariates gender and age showed an effect on corrected arm girth (gender: P=.04), curl-up repetitions (gender: P=.04) and push-up repetitions (gender: P=.04) in the EG; while in the CG it affected corrected thigh girth (gender: P=.04), adherence to the Mediterranean diet (gender: P=.04 and age: P=.047) competence (gender: P=.04 and age: P=.04) and relatedness (gender: P=.05 and age: P=.04). No significant differences were found when comparing changes in the CG and EG. A 10-week program of mobile app use by adolescents who are overweight and obese for physical activity outside of school hours does not appear effective in producing improvements in body composition, physical fitness, or adequate psychological state as it does not appear to significantly increase physical activity. Pemanfaatan Mobile JKN Untuk Meningkatkan Efektifitas Pelayanan

The Mobile JKN application is a government innovation in the health sector managed by BPJS Kesehatan in providing public services to participants. This Mobile JKN application is expected to reduce queues at each BPJS Kesehatan branch office by helping to serve all participant administrative activities. However, many people do not have the Mobile JKN application and still, many participants come to the office for services. This study aims to determine the use of the Mobile Health Insurance (JKN) application to increase the effectiveness of services at BPJS Kesehatan Wonogiri Regency. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach and data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. This study took informants as many as one staff and nine BPJS Kesehatan Wonogiri Regency participants. The study results show that participants' understanding and awareness of the Mobile JKN application is still low. The use of the National Health Insurance Mobile (JKN) application at BPJS Kesehatan Wonogiri Regency has been running. Still, it has not been effective and efficient in terms of measures of effectiveness, namely, program understanding, target accuracy, timeliness, achievement of goals, and real changes. The obstacles participants face in using the application are system disruptions, full storage of participants' mobile phones, and networks, participants who do not understand the application, and incomplete login requirements. Prevalence and determinants of no mobile phone phobia among university students: an Italian multicenter study

ObjectiveAs the Internet has undergone a significant increase, the smartphone has become the primary electronic device used for accessing it. However, several adverse effects on health and also psychological disorders, such as the fear of not being able to use a mobile phone and/or its services, called nomophobia, may be related to their use. This multicenter study was aimed at evaluating the prevalence, the correlates and the predictors of nomophobia in a large sample of university students recruited throughout the Italian territory.MethodsStudents attending 12 Italian universities were asked to complete a web-based questionnaire investigating their sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics and including the Nomophobia-Questionnaire, items from the Generalized Anxiety Disorder and the Patient Health Questionnaire.Resultsout of 1303 respondents (mean age 24.1 ± 4.4, 69.5% females), 454 (34.8%) showed a medium/severe profile of nomophobia which seems to be related with attention to diet (PR 0.831, 95%CI 0.715–0.966, p = 0.016), physical activity levels (PR 0.799, 95%CI 0.682–0.934, p = 0.005), and alcohol consumption (PR 1.290, 95%CI 1.010–1.647, p = 0.042). Furthermore, nomophobia was slightly related with a predisposition to anxiety (rho = 0.2312, p < 0.001) and depression (rho = 0.0699, p = 0.0116).ConclusionsThe results indicated that in the sample examined nomophobia profile is associated with unhealthy behaviors, and then this finding suggested that awareness and control of health risks related to the use of mobile phones should be increased in the population examined.

Illegalisms and discipline in a Brazilian prison

The article summarizes research with an empirical sample of all cases of severe disciplinary misconduct for possessing a cell phone in a prison of Curitiba in 2017. The question posed for analysis is which parameters would determine the imputation of disciplinary responsibility for cell phones seized from this or that prisoner. From the study of the processes and participant observation, it becomes evident how, in the great majority of cases, the prisoners who take responsibility for the seized items do so because they do not have family in the region, because they have a high remnant penalty or to get some form of payment, not being the real owners of the devices. The application of the disciplinary sanction, with knowledge of the falsity of the confession, indicates that prison administration operates as a manager of illegalisms and not from the legal/illegal binomial.

Ghosts of solid air: contested heritage and augmented reality in public space

ABSTRACT This article critically reflects on the design and development of a new Augmented Reality (AR) experience addressing issues of contested heritage in the historic built environment. The experience – Ghosts of Solid Air – is a 45-minute interactive theatrical narrative for mobile phones that tells a critical story about the legacies of colonialism and histories of protest and disobedience that have shaped contemporary Britain. Audiences follow the story from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square in central London, encountering varied contested monuments and activist figures from the past along the route. This article describes the main elements of the experience before tracing the evolution of the project and its relationship to shifting debates on contested heritage in the UK since 2020. We conclude with reflections on the challenges and opportunities of AR when it comes to opening up new modes of heritage engagement, paying particular attention to questions of justice and participation that transcend issues of representation, recognition, and reinterpretation.

Disentangling the good, the bad, and the neutral of co-present mobile phone use: A new perspective on “partner phubbing”

Studies show that the use of smartphones in the presence of a partner may result in lower relationship quality, intimacy, and increased conflict. Such co-present phone use, often referred to as “phubbing” or “technoference,” has been problematized in the literature. However, few studies have hitherto explored the possibility that using phones in each other's presence may not cause any relational harm and might even support relationship maintenance. Only recently did the critiques and theoretical frameworks begin to expand our understanding of the broader role of smartphones in dyadic interactions. In this study, we tested whether co-present phone use is always perceived as negative, or if it could also be neutral or positive. We employed quantitative methods and content coding of free responses to understand the participants’ experiences and reasoning in different evaluations. We analyzed the responses of British participants ( N = 383) living with their partner, who were enrolled via Prolific to take part in the study. The analyses revealed that only 15% of participants perceived their partner's phone use as negative, the majority evaluating it as neutral or positive. Most participants reported that their partner's phone use had no impact on their time together or was integrated with other activities. Those who reported a negative impact attributed it to the partner's lack of attention. The present study challenges the existing literature and highlights the need for a conceptual expansion of smartphone-related behaviors in dyads.

The adoption of information technology governance frameworks by universities in Gauteng province, South Africa

Lately, there has been a rise in personal and commercial use of computer devices, be it mobile phones, laptops, or any other computing devices, not forgetting the network, networking peripherals, and software that these devices function with. That being said, it has led organisations and institutions of higher learning to establish and adhere to Information Technology governance frameworks set out by the government and the higher education sector. White and Greiner (2022) defined Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) as an Information Technology (IT) service management framework that outlines best practices for delivering IT services. Kidd (2019) defined Control Objectives for Information and Related Technologies (COBIT) as an IT management framework developed by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) to help businesses develop, organize, and implement strategies around information management and IT governance. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ITIL and COBIT, as IT governance frameworks recommended by the higher education sector in South Africa, were adopted by ICT departments in universities in Gauteng province, South Africa. Data collection was done using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent via email to 52 potential respondents from all the higher institutions in Gauteng. A total of 41 questionnaires were returned. The questionnaire for both ITIL and COBIT frameworks was designed using Google Forms. The study findings showed that universities in Gauteng have adopted ITIL and COBIT as ICT governance frameworks recommended by the Higher Education sector in South Africa. The study's results are crucial for university administrators as they might improve comprehension of the factors affecting the adoption, administration, and utilization of ICT resources to enhance the university's capacities

The Role of Mobile Phones in Facilitating Business Education During the Transition to New Normal Learning Models

This study explores the impact of mobile phone use on self-regulated learning among students at the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology San Isidro Campus, specifically within the College of Management and Business Technology. Using a descriptive correlational research design, the study aims to assess how integral mobile phones are to students’ learning processes, focusing on activities such as goal setting, environment structuring, task strategies, time management, help-seeking, and self-evaluation. Data were collected through a survey distributed to a significant portion of the student body, with subsequent statistical analysis to elucidate the relationship between mobile phone use and the efficacy of self-regulated learning strategies. Results reveal that mobile phones play a crucial role in enhancing students’ ability to manage their learning autonomously. They facilitate access to resources, enable communication with peers and instructors, and support various aspects of self-regulated learning. However, the study also identifies challenges such as distraction, dependency, and varying access to digital resources, suggesting a need for structured guidance in mobile usage. The assumptions emphasize the potential of mobile phones as beneficial educational tools when integrated with supportive measures to mitigate associated challenges. This study contributes to the understanding of mobile learning dynamics and underscores the need for educational strategies that leverage mobile technology effectively.

Adaptation of problematic mobile phone usage scale (PMPUS) among students from countries of the commonwealth of independent states in Russian university

An aim of this study was to evaluate the precision and reliability of the problematic mobile phone use scale in the context of Russia and to investigate the frequency and associated factors of problematic mobile phone use among university students. The survey included a random sample of 481 university students from Moscow, Russia. The dataset was randomly split into two groups in order to support exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). An EFA helped to build the five-component framework including social dissonance, emotional impact, cognitive impact, psychosomatic impact, and loss of control. The CFA validated this structure by obtaining favorable model fit indices. Both Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s (2013) omega coefficients for all subscales demonstrated a high level of dependability. The application of latent profile analysis revealed three clearly defined user profiles: high-risk users, moderate users with social concerns, and low-risk users. This study presents a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating problematic mobile phone usage in the Russian setting and provides significant insights into the complex and multifaceted nature of this phenomena. The results emphasize the need to implement focused intervention measures, especially for vulnerable populations, and add to the expanding repository of research on problematic cell phone usage in many cultural settings.

Modeling Thermal Runaway Mechanisms and Pressure Dynamics in Prismatic Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries play a vital role in modern energy storage systems, being widely utilized in devices such as mobile phones, electric vehicles, and stationary energy units. One of the critical challenges with their use is the thermal runaway (TR), typically characterized by a sharp increase in internal pressure. A thorough understanding and accurate prediction of this behavior are crucial for improving the safety and reliability of these batteries. To achieve this, two new combined models were developed: one to simulate the thermal runaway and another to simulate the internal cell pressure. The thermal model tracks a chain of decomposition reactions that eventually lead to TR. At the same time, the pressure model simulates the proportional increase in pressure due to the evaporation of the electrolyte and the gases produced from the decomposition reactions. What sets this work apart is the validation of the pressure model through experimental data, specifically for prismatic lithium-ion cells using NMC chemistries with varying stoichiometries—NMC111 and NMC811. While the majority of the literature focuses on the simulation of temperature and pressure for cylindrical cells, studies addressing these aspects in prismatic cells are much less common. This article addresses this gap by conducting pressure validation experiments, which are hardly documented in the existing studies. Furthermore, the model’s accuracy and flexibility are tested through two experiments, conducted under diverse conditions to ensure robust and adaptive predictions of cell behavior during failure scenarios.

The Relationship between Self-Control and Problematic Internet Use with Phubbing in Emerging Adults

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-control, problematic internet use (PIU), and phubbing behaviour in emerging adults or early adults aged 18-29. Self-control is regulating thoughts, emotions and behaviour to achieve long-term goals. Meanwhile, PIU is an excessive use of the internet that negatively affects mental well-being and social functioning. Phubbing ignores others because they are too focused on cell phones or the internet. The sample selection used a probability sampling technique, with a stratified random sampling method, involving 425 participants, 255 female participants and 170 male participants. The measuring instruments used in this study were the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS), Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ), and Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP). This study has correlation results between variables with a p-value &lt;0.001, which shows that self-control plays a role in reducing PIU and phubbing behaviour and indicates that PIU and phubbing are closely related. Conducting this study can help develop interventions to increase self-control and reduce the negative impact of PIU and phubbing on emerging adults or individuals who are in the early adult phase.

Journalist's Strategy Tras.Id in Search of News in Bengkulu Province

Every day journalists are required to be able to find and make news. With these demands, journalists are encouraged to be able to fulfill them in various ways in accordance with the rules and regulations. This paper shows the strategies of Tras.id journalists in finding news in the Bengkulu Region. Purposive sampling, an informant interview technique, was used in this qualitative research. Planning, production, and editing are the three main focuses of this research. This study uses data collection methods with observation, interviews, and documentation to collect information from six people, namely the public, editor-in-chief, editors, and journalists. Starting with daily editorial meetings and the availability of supporting equipment such as cars, cell phones, agendas/notebooks, and press cards, this research resulted in a news search strategy. The study's recommendations focus on two areas: the lack of case studies or specific topics on the news published by Tras.id media and the need to initiate some major investigations into the escalation of political issues. The next advice that needs to be given is to pay close attention to each sentence on the news page before it is published.

Segmentation and Proportion Extraction of Crop, Crop Residues, and Soil Using Digital Images and Deep Learning

Conservation tillage involves covering the soil surface with crop residues after harvest, typically through reduced or no-tillage practices. This approach increases the soil organic matter, improves the soil structure, prevents erosion, reduces water loss, promotes microbial activity, and enhances root development. Therefore, accurate information on crop residue coverage is critical for monitoring the implementation of conservation tillage practices. This study collected “crop–crop residues–soil” images from wheat-soybean rotation fields using mobile phones to create calibration, validation, and independent validation datasets. We developed a deep learning model named crop–crop residue–soil segmentation network (CCRSNet) to enhance the performance of cropland “crop–crop residues–soil” image segmentation and proportion extraction. The model enhances the segmentation accuracy and proportion extraction by extracting and integrating shallow and deep image features and attention modules to capture multi-scale contextual information. Our findings indicated that (1) lightweight models outperformed deeper networks for “crop–crop residues–soil” image segmentation. When CCRSNet employed a deep network backbone (ResNet50), its feature extraction capability was inferior to that of lighter models (VGG16). (2) CCRSNet models that integrated shallow and deep features with attention modules achieved a high segmentation and proportion extraction performance. Using VGG16 as the backbone, CCRSNet achieved an mIoU of 92.73% and a PA of 96.23% in the independent validation dataset, surpassing traditional SVM and RF models. The RMSE for the proportion extraction accuracy ranged from 1.05% to 3.56%. These results demonstrate the potential of CCRSNet for the accurate, rapid, and low-cost detection of crop residue coverage. However, the generalizability and robustness of deep learning models depend on the diversity of calibration datasets. Further experiments across different regions and crops are required to validate this method’s accuracy and applicability for “crop–crop residues–soil” image segmentation and proportion extraction.

Reliability and concurrent validity of the iHandy level mobile application to measure thoracolumbar range of motion in low back pain patients

IntroductionThe use of smartphone technology and software (apps), in addition to an inclinometer and goniometer, has expanded the clinician’s assessment possibilities. However, the legitimacy and trustworthiness of these cell phones and applications are still questioned. This study aimed to determine the reliability and concurrent validity of the iHandy level mobile application to measure the thoracolumbar range of motion in people with low back pain.MethodsThis descriptive study included 40 participants, of which 20 were symptomatic, and 20 were asymptomatic for non-specific chronic pain in the lower back. Measurements were taken for extension, flexion, and left and right-side bending range of motion (ROM). Two investigators were involved. One measured ROM values with a Samsung iHandy level and inclinometer, and the second investigator registered the data. Two values were taken and the mean was used for further analysis. Measurements were taken at baseline and one-week follow-up.ResultsIn asymptomatic participants, the mobile application had ICC values of 0.81, 0.70, 0.79, and 0.85, while in symptomatic, regarding intra-rater reliability, these were 0.80, 0.78, 0.81Regarding the concurrent validity of mobile apps in asymptomatic patients, ICC values were 0.94, 0.93, 0.84, and 0.89, while in symptomatic patients, the ICC values were found to be 0.92, 0.89, 0.83, and 0.85 for flexion, extension, RLF, and LLF, respectively. These showed an excellent correlation between the inclinometer and mobile app regarding intra-rater reliability and concurrent validity.ConclusionsiHandy level smartphone applications might be considered reliable and valid for assessing thoracolumbar motion ranges in individuals with chronic pain in the lower back.

Impact of Using Mobile Phone on Students’ Academic Performance at Government College of Education Sukkur, Sindh, Pakistan

This study was conducted using mixed method to know the impact of using mobile phone on students’ academic performances. The data was collected through interview and questionnaire. The interview was taken by using structured questionnaire for students and teachers, separately using Google Forms. The sample size was comprised of 12 male teachers and 70 male and female student-teachers of Government College of Education Sukkur while the 12 students were from other institutes. The data analyzed qualitatively &amp; quantitatively with the help of SPSS software. The study results have shown that 98% of students were using mobile phone, while only 2% of the students were not using mobile phone. The quantitative data suggested that more than 50% always used the mobile phone for photography/camera, text messaging, for contacting with their classmates and for the social media. More than 50% respondent reported that they have rare/often usage frequency for to contact easily with teachers for study purpose, for voice call, usage of dictionary /thesaurus in class. More than 50% respondent reported that they never/rare usage frequency for games. Teachers reported they used mobile plane for teaching purposes, audio recording, for video calling, for calculator and for the calendar purposes. The qualitative data suggested following main themes from the interview data of 8 teachers: 1) Mobile phone has Positive influence on the students, 2) Use of mobile phone improves the student’s performance, 3) Students use mobile phone, alone for academic purpose and enhance their performance, 4) It is better for all generations, specially for students, to improve knowledge. However, 4 teachers reported that mobile phone has the mixed usage positive and negative simultaneously effects on students, like bullying, lost concentration in the classes. A Transport Mode Detection Framework Based on Mobile Phone Signaling Data Combined with Bus GPS Data

Transport mode is one of the important travel characteristics for citizens, which is crucial to the planning and management of urban transportation. With the natural advantages of large sample sizes and a wide coverage of people, more and more researchers adopt mobile phone signaling data (MSD) to detect transport modes. However, due to their low positioning accuracy and temporally irregular nature, identifying transport modes with similar spatiotemporal features, such as the bus and car modes, is particularly challenging. We propose a transport detection framework using MSD combined with bus GPS data to distinguish between the car and bus modes. First, a trajectory matching algorithm is proposed to obtain the most probable bus that mobile phone users may take. Then, more features are mined to improve the accuracy of transport mode detection with different classification models. Furthermore, for signaling trajectories identified as the bus mode, more bus travel information is recognized, including the boarding and alighting station and timestamp. Finally, we built a ground truth dataset and compared the recognition accuracies under different features and classification models. The result shows that the transport mode detection accuracies of the proposed framework with the GBDT, XGBoost, and LightGBM algorithms are all higher than 94%.

Digital dynamics: exploring ICT's role in revolutionising Nigeria's trade sectors

PurposeThis study examined the influence of information and communication technology (ICT) on Nigeria's trade in sectors. Specifically, the research evaluated the effects of internet penetration, mobile phone subscriptions and fixed telephone subscriptions on exports and imports.Design/methodology/approachThe study considered data from 1995 to 2022, highlighting ten trade sectors per standard international trade classification (SITC) single digit. It utilised the panel auto-regressive distributed lag (ARDL) with a preference for a pooled mean group (PMG) estimator.FindingsThe study finds that, in the short run, increases in internet penetration, mobile phone subscriptions and fixed telephone subscriptions significantly decrease export levels in Nigeria. Nonetheless, ICT advancements, particularly in mobile and fixed telephone subscriptions, significantly boost import activities by 17.9 and 41.5% in the long run, highlighting their positive impact on trade dynamics. In the long run, mobile telephone subscriptions substantially negatively affect exports. In contrast, internet penetration and fixed telephone subscriptions show no significant impact, indicating differing influences of ICT components on trade over time.Practical implicationsThe study underscored the need to prioritise enhancing ICT infrastructure to boost export growth, especially in sectors identified under the SITC framework. Strategies should be developed to mitigate the negative impacts associated with ICT advancements.Originality/valueThe study used the SITC framework, which presents different export and import sectors. It offers a distinctive examination of the short- and long-term effects of ICT on Nigeria's trade sectors. It also provided valuable insights into the impact of mobile and internet technologies on exports and imports, highlighting sector-specific effects and the need for strategic resource allocation.

Mobile phone based laser scanning as a low-cost alternative for multidisciplinary data collection

Airborne and terrestrial laser scanners have traditionally been used as specialised toolsets for three-dimensional scene capture in engineering, providing highly accurate measurements with increasingly minimal human interaction. However, commercial or engineering-grade scanning instruments remain expensive and sensitive, requiring costly routine calibrations to ensure their optimum functionality. The recent inclusion of laser scanning sensors by mobile phone corporations such as Apple Computer Inc. is now analogous to the integration of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and cameras into smartphones as seen decades ago. Likely, these initial efforts to include the scanning sensor in mobile phones will see rapid improvements in the application and accuracy of the sensor to serve the growing need for scanning applications for transdisciplinary users. However, there is a limited amount of literature that benchmarks the emerging and low-cost scanning sensors to existing commercial ones to inform practice, thus prompting a need for researchers to evaluate and provide scientific evidence that can inform multidisciplinary scanning. It was noted that there was some absolute positional shift and scan drift in the iPhone Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. The researchers therefore investigated the extent to which the accuracy of laser scanning tools available within the iPhone 12 Pro compared to engineering-grade laser scanners. Outcomes from the study showed that iPhone scanners can deliver the required models, despite being unstable in dynamic environments when pitched against engineering-grade LiDAR scanners. The research recommends that stabilisers, such as stabilising gimbals or enhanced GNSS receivers, be used in practice to achieve improved accuracy from the mobile phone LiDAR.
