Mobile-Based Education App for Improved Performance in Empowerment Technologies

This study aimed to improve the performance in Empowerment Technologies subject of the Grade 11 TVL students, the researcher sought to find out if creating an interactive application would make an impact to the teaching and learning process. The study employed an experimental design where the researcher used the mobile-based education app to improve the written and hands-on performance of the students in Empowerment Technologies subject. This study is also descriptive where the respondents’ perception about the application in terms of the aspects of mobile learning was evaluated. Thus, the researcher tested whether the perception of the students in terms of the aspects of mobile learning on the developed mobile-based education app is significantly related to students’ performances. The findings reveal that there were more female among the respondents. The parents’ educational attainment was high school graduate and have an income of less than 10,000 pesos per month. Majority of the respondents have a smartphone as their available gadgets at home. Furthermore, the mobile-based education app on the aspects of mobile learning such as device aspect, learner aspect and social aspects were strongly agreed. The majority of the respondents were fair level during the pre-test written performance and has significantly improved after using the mobile-based education app. Thus, majority of the respondents were very satisfactory in their hands-on performances. The perception of the respondents in the aspects of mobile-based education app is not significantly related to their performances.; the hypothesis was Sustained. It is recommended that the developed mobile-based education app be used in other grade levels whenever applicable for any intervention or enrichment activities.

Effect of a Mobile-based Educational Program on Anxiety and Self-efficacy of Iranian Mothers With Children Admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Units

Background & Aims Admitting a child to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) brings various physical, psychological and social consequences for parents. Supporting parental self-efficacy is a step to ensure successful implementation of pediatric care. Therefore, it is necessary to provide appropriate interventions to reduce anxiety and stress and improve self-efficacy of parents. Although mobile-based education has been used for patients in many studies, its use for family caregivers of children admitted to PICU is limited. This study aims to assess the effect of a mobile-based educational program on the anxiety and self-efficacy of mothers with children admitted to PICUs in Iran. Materials & Methods In this quasi-experimental study, participants were 60 mothers of children admitted to the PICUs of hospitals in Shahrekord, Iran from April to August 2022. They were selected using a convenience sampling method and were divided into two intervention and control groups. The intervention group received a mobile-based educational program for four days, one session per day, each for 60 minutes. For the control group, routine education was given by the ward nurses. Data were collected by Spielberger’s state-trait anxiety inventory and Schwarzer & Jerusalem’s general self-efficacy scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results The mean self-efficacy score in the intervention group increased significantly compared to the pre-intervention score (from 19.60±4.01 to 21.87±5.13; P<0.001), but no significant difference was observed in the control group (from 18.53±4.23 to 19.30±5.40; P=0.393). In the intervention group, the mean anxiety score decreased significantly compared to the pre-intervention score (from 47.33±5.52 to 43.63±5.27; P=0.001) but no significant difference was observed in the control group (from 48.30±6.88 to 46.43±9.02; P=0.131). There was no significant difference between the two groups in anxiety and self-efficacy scores before and after the intervention (P>0.05). Conclusion Nurses can reduce anxiety and increase the self-efficacy of mothers of children admitted to PICUs by using other measures along with virtual education, which requires more research in this field.

The effects of mobile-based education on nurse self-concept among nursing students: an embedded mixed methods study.

This study evaluates the effects of mobile-based education (MBE) on nurse self-concept (NSC) among nursing students. This embedded mixed methods study was conducted in 2020-2021 in a main quantitative phase and a supplementary qualitative phase. In the quantitative phase, a quasi-experimental study with the Solomon four-group design was conducted on 117 second-year nursing students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. 70 students in the first (C1: n=37) and the second (C2: n=33) semesters of the 2020 academic year were respectively considered as the control groups, and 40 students in the first semester of the 2021 academic year considered as the experimental groups (I1: n=20 and I2: n=20). Participants in the experimental groups received NSC-related MBE through an Android application, while their counterparts in the control groups received no NSC-related MBE. Cowin's Nurse Self-Concept Questionnaire was used to assess the NSC. In the qualitative phase, six students from the experimental groups were purposively selected and interviewed through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Moreover, two focus group discussions were held with a six-person and a five-person group of students from the experimental groups. While the mean scores of NSC and its dimensions did not significantly change in the C1 group, the posttest mean scores of them in the E1 group were significantly greater than the corresponding pretest values (p<0.05), expect for the care dimension (p=0.586). Moreover, except for the care dimension (p>0.05), the posttest means scores of NSC and its other dimensions in the E1 and the E2 groups were significantly greater than the C1 and the C2 groups, respectively (p<0.05). Analysis of the qualitative data resulted in the generation of the main theme of multidimensional growth and development with three main categories, namely development of coping strategies, knowing professionalization strategies, and development of managerial potentials. NSC-related MBE is effective in improving nursing students' NSC.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the mobile-based military WithYou program on the sexual violence myth, empathy, bystander efficacy, and intent to help friends or strangers among Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy (KAFNA) cadets. Methods: The study was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 113 (control group: 56; experimental group: 57). The WithYou program was provided in mobile-based education. This study was conducted in KAFNA from 18 March to 8 April 2021. Data were analyzed by the chi-square test, Fisher''s exact test, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) using the SPSS program. Results: The results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in empathy (F=5.23, p=.024), bystander efficacy (F=17.36, p<.001), intent to help friend (F=22.64, p<.001) and intent to help stranger (F=22.13, p<.001) scores between the control and experimental groups. Conclusion: The mobile-based military WithYou program may improve empathy, bystander efficacy and intent to help, which are necessary to behave as bystanders and intend to help friends and strangers. We suggest to develop systematic and expanded WithYou program in various ways.

Effects of Maternal Adjustment Enhancement Program Using Mobile-Based Education for Chinese Immigrant Women in Korea: A Quasi-Experimental Study

This study aimed to develop a maternal adjustment program for Chinese immigrant primiparous women in Korea and to investigate its effectiveness. Forty-five Chinese immigrant women with newborns were recruited and conveniently assigned into experimental and control groups. A maternal adjustment enhancement program was initiated to the experimental group using a mobile-based education regarding cultural intimacy for 4 weeks. In the follow-ups, the experimental group showed significantly higher knowledge of childcare and parenting efficacy. Both the experimental and control groups showed an improvement in social support and a decrease in childcare stress without between-group differences. The maternal adjustment enhancement program can be utilized as an effective approach to improve knowledge of childcare and reinforce parenting efficacy of Chinese immigrant women in Korea. Strategies to reduce language barrier and to provide education with culturally friendly manners should be utilized for successful transition to motherhood among immigrant mothers.

Long-term effect of mobile phone-based education and influencing factors of willingness to receive HPV vaccination among female freshmen in Shanxi Province, China

ABSTRACT Background This study was conducted to characterize the long-term effect of mobile-based education on Chinese female freshmen and disclose the possible predictors of their willingness to get vaccinated based on the information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model. Methods We randomly assigned 509 participants to a 7-day mobile-based educational intervention or control group and collected information about general information, health, and sexual behavior, HPV vaccination intention and action, HPV-related knowledge, cognition, and behavioral skill by an online self-administrated questionnaire at baseline, post-intervention, and at the 1-month and 3-month follow-ups. Results The intervention arm showed an improvement in IMB scores after education. Despite the persistent improvement in knowledge, the improvement in their motivation and behavioral skills decreased at the 1-month and 3-month follow-ups. Participants’ vaccination willingness was elevated after the baseline survey in both the intervention and control groups, while the overall appointment/vaccination rate was only 3.73% 3 months later. The intention to get vaccinated was associated with knowing HPV (adjusted OR: 2.37, 95% CI: 1.44 – 3.89), perceiving more barriers (adjusted OR: 2.16, 95% CI: 1.44 – 3.25), higher subjective norms (adjusted OR: 2.05, 95% CI: 1.26 – 3.32), and having more behavioral skills (adjusted OR: 2.95, 95% CI: 1.79 – 4.87). Conclusion Seven-day mobile-based education was effective to increase IMB model scores among female freshmen. However, the improvement in motivation and behavioral skills was not persistent. Information, perceived barriers, subjective norms, and behavioral skills were discovered to be influencing factors of vaccination intention. Future research with longer, more convenient, and more tailored education to the main influencing factors is warranted.

The Effect of a Mobile-Based Education App on Fear of Childbirth in Pregnant Women

BACKGROUNDFear of childbirth is one of the most important reasons for not choosing natural childbirth. The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of a mobile-based education (MBE) app on fear of childbirth in pregnant women.METHODSThe present study was quasi-experimental and included 114 pregnant women assigned to experimental (n = 57) and control (n = 57) groups. Data collection tools included the demographic information questionnaire and Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire. Questionnaires were completed and then an educational intervention based on a mobile app was performed for the experimental group. The mothers of the experimental group were instructed to read the entire contents of the application once a week for 8 weeks. The questionnaires were completed again after 8 weeks of educational intervention and after delivery.RESULTSResearch units had no significant differences in personal data at the beginning of the study (p &gt;.05). After the intervention, in the experimental and control groups, the mean change score of fear of childbirth had significant differences (p &lt; .001). In addition, the mean change in fear of childbirth score before and after the intervention in the experimental group was significant (p &lt; .001). However, in the control group, there was no significant difference between before and after the intervention.CONCLUSIONThe results of this study showed that mobile application-based education is effective on the fear of childbirth in pregnant women. Therefore, it is recommended that health care providers, especially midwives, use this educational method to prevent and reduce the fear of childbirth in pregnant women.

The influence of mobile app in Glycemic Control and Prevention of Hypoglycemics in Diabetic management: A Systematic Review

Background. The use of technology in the treatment of diabetes can facilitate the medium of communication between nurses and clients in data collection to create a comfortable life for patients. The use of mobile health technology in diabetic education is an innovative learning method that can engage patients and influence positive health behaviors. Aim. This study aims to find out the influence of mobile-based education applications in the Haemoglobin A1c control and prevention of hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods. Database search for article are from four databases such as Pubmed, Sciencedirect, Proquest, and Cochrane is limited to the publication of the last ten years from 2010 to 2021 and full text article in English. Authors individually screened the titles and abstracts, then full articles in order to obtain papers that met inclusion criteria Results. a total of 664 references were found. After duplicates were removed, 391 potentially relevant references remained from the database searches. Eight articles were finally designated as articles to be reviewed and use RCT design. Most studies put a Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) as a primary outcomes, and hypoglycemia as a secondary outcomes. Through the use of mobile app, there are reductions in HbA1c which affect the hypoglycemia events in Type 2 DM patients. Conclusion. Mobile application can enhance HbA1c and hypoglycemia control among T2DM patients. Because providing patient education face to face is time-consuming, the use of mobile application may be an effective complement or alternative for healthcare professionals to manage the rapidly increasing number of diabetes patients.

The effect of education using a mobile application on knowledge and decision of Iranian mothers about prevention of foreign body aspiration and to relieve choking in children: A quasi-experimental study

PurposeThe aim of this study was to determine the effect of mobile-based education on mothers' knowledge and decisions about prevention of foreign body (FBA) aspiration and to relieve choking in preschool children. MethodsThis is a quasi-experimental study in which 88 mothers whose children were registered in each selected kindergarten of the city of Rasht (in Iran) were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling. All mothers were educated through lectures. Then, in the control group, an educational booklet and CDs were used, and in the intervention group, a mobile application was used. Mothers' knowledge and decision were measured by a researcher-made questionnaire before and after the lecture and four weeks after providing the interventions. Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and Friedman tests were used to analyze the data. The level of significance was p < 0.05. ResultsThe results showed that the mean scores of knowledge (n = 44, M = 13.47, SD = 1.84) and decision (n = 44, M = 8.52, SD = 1.30) of participants immediately and mean scores of knowledge (n = 44, M = 14.68, SD = 1.98) and decision of participants (n = 44, M = 9.56, SD = 2.15) four weeks after the educational interventions, in the intervention group, were statistically significantly higher than the control group. Intragroup comparison of the mean scores of knowledge and decision immediately and four weeks after educational interventions, showed that only in the intervention group did the mean scores have statistically significant increase, (p < 0.05). ConclusionMobile-based education was more effective in improving mothers' knowledge and decision about prevention of foreign body aspiration and to relieve choking in children than other educational methods. Practice implicationsMobile applications may be a new and effective method for providing education to parents.

Comparing the Effects of Mobile-Based Education and Booklet-Based Education on Iranian Mothers’ Perception on Antibiotics: A Quasi-Experimental Study

PurposeThe aim of this study was to investigate the effect of mobile-based education in comparison with booklet-based education on mothers' perception on antibiotics. Design and methodsThis quasi-experimental study was performed on 160 mothers of children aged 1 to 6 years (80 in the experimental group and 80 in the control group) who referred to the urban community health centers in Iran. Both groups were taught about the proper use of antibiotics. The experimental group was taught using a mobile application and the control group was taught using a booklet. The Parental Perception on Antibiotics (PAPA) scale was used to collect data at the beginning and two to four weeks after the educational intervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 19. ResultsThe results showed that 91.9% of mothers used the knowledge of nurses or other health care providers and 86.3% used their previous experience as the source of information about antibiotics. Also, mothers' perceptions about antibiotics in the subscales of knowledge and beliefs, behaviors, adherence and awareness about antibiotics resistance in the experimental group improved significantly compared to the control group (p < 0.05). ConclusionsMobile-based education was more effective in improving mothers' perception on antibiotics than booklet-based education. Practice implicationsHealth care providers can use mobile-based educational method for different groups of society to promote health in various fields.

InCell VR: A Virtual Reality-based Application on Human Cell Division for Mobile Learning

Many teaching and learning tools incorporate current technologies for the learners to gain new knowledge thus increasing the efficiency of learning. Some of the technologies adopted in the mobile-based education systems are virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. In the Biology field, one of the problems faced by the learners is the difficulties in visualizing the human cell division process in the topic of mitosis and meiosis. Thus, many innovations which adopt these technologies are created to improve the understanding and interest of the learners. In this work, an interactive mobile learning application with virtual reality technology has been designed and developed to help learners visualize the human cell division process. The mobile application which is known as &lt;em&gt;InCell VR&lt;/em&gt; also includes mini games which can help to test and improve the learners’ understanding. The &lt;em&gt;InCell VR&lt;/em&gt; was developed using Unity, a game engine platform for developing high performance commercial game. The final evaluation assesses two parts: the learners’ knowledge gain after using the application and usability evaluation of the application. The usage of the proposed application was seen to give positive impact on the development of learners’ knowledge from the pre- and post-test testing sessions. The usability study showed that &lt;em&gt;InCell VR&lt;/em&gt; application is useful, easy to be used and learnt, and give satisfactions to the users.

Instagram Uygulamasının Dental Eğitimdeki Rolü

Objective: Technological developments affect educational processes, learning methods, and learning environments. Dentistry education should be adapted parallel with technological developments for students whose learning habits change with the increasing using of social media and mobile phones. This study aims to compare the efficacy of the mobile-based education method (Instagram application) and the traditional classroom education method. Material and Methods: The study was conducted with 42 volunteer students who had not taken general and oral pathology courses yet. Students (n:21) in the control group took radiological features of the odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts and odontogenic tumors course by the classroom learning method. The study group (n:21) followed the same lessons' images on the newly opened @beuradyoloji Instagram account. Both groups were trained for 1 hour a week for 4 weeks. The knowledge test was held 15 days after the end of the courses to all students. Paired sample t-test was performed to investigate differences between the mean knowledge test scores of the groups. Results: The examination average for the study group was 71.97±9.3 and the control group was 68.33±8.39. Paired sample t-test showed no significant difference between the study and control groups in knowledge scores (p>0.05). Conclusion: The current study is the first that investigates the effect of the mobile-based education method on radiological features of the specific cysts and tumors. The study carried out on a limited number of students, shows that the value of mobile-based education has almost the same effectiveness to classroom education.

Abstract 16296: Heart Failure-Smart Life: Effects of a Mobile-based Education and Self-management Program for Patients With Heart Failure

Introduction: It is considered an important strategy to support heart failure (HF) patients for lifetime self-management. However, some programs for HF patients made them difficult to revisit the hospital or due to economic burden. Therefore, a practical alternative to a comprehensive and user-friendly self-management program for HF patients is needed. Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a mobile App program for HF patients, and to identify the impact of the program on patients with HF. Methods: We developed a mobile App program, named “HF-Smart Life”. This App installed the configurations and functions of educational materials using pictures and animations, daily health (blood pressure and body weight) check-up diary, Q &amp; A, and 1:1 chat considering user’s convenience. Regarding the experimental study, we employed a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the effects of the program in 74 patients with HF. The experimental group participated to use the mobile App program, including education, feedbacks on self-management, and monitoring in their daily life, for 3 months. Results: Participants of the program (n=36) exhibited significantly improved NYHA functional class and cardiac diastolic function (E/Ea ratio measured by echocardiogram) than the control group (n=38) after 3 months. The mean NYHA function class of the experimental group changed from 2.14 to 1.82, and that of the control group changed from 2.66 to 2.38 (F=9.260, p=.003). Also, the mean E/Ea ratio decreased from 12.24 to 11.35 in the experimental group, whereas that of the control group increased from 14.70 to 16.42 (F=5,280, p=.024). However, there was no significant difference between the groups with cardiac systolic function (left ventricular ejection fraction measured by echocardiogram) and quality of life. Conclusions: This mobile App program showed effectively improvements in HF patients' symptom (functional) class and cardiac diastolic function. Future study is needed to investigate the long-term effects of the mobile-based education and self-management program in HF population. RETRACTED: Mobile-based education design for teaching and learning platform based on virtual reality

As a new teaching medium, virtual reality technology has been widely used in the field of education due to the characteristics of immersiveness, imagination, and interactivity, thereby changing the previous teaching concepts and teaching models. Mobile learning has developed rapidly due to its characteristics of mobility, personalization, fragmentation, and hypermedia. Based on the characteristics of the two, we innovatively propose the application of virtual reality technology to the development and construction of mobile learning platforms. This article analyzes the application advantages of virtual reality technology in mobile learning first; proposes design ideas, development tools, architecture design, functional design, and development process of the virtual reality-based mobile learning platform second; displays some of the virtual reality-based mobile learning platforms that have been completed subsequently. Various teaching practice activities have been carried out based on these platforms and achieved good results.

EML: An Android Application for Electrical Education

This paper is to explain the development of android that will be used later in the mobile-based education system. Nowadays, it is important for schools, colleges, and universities to search for an innovative way of delivering information to students. Since the advancement of mobile-based technology, android has now become an important tool in teaching and learning processes. Several institutions have also proved that with this application, students are now able to gain more experience and be more engaging in classroom learning rather than the traditional learning method. In relation to that, the author has created a new application in mobile learning called Electrical Mobile Learning (EML), especially for Electrical Education. The purpose of this application is to positively contribute to users by providing them with a simple, convenient, reliable and a faster way of accessing information in Electrical Education either online or offline. EML application is developed by using the MIT Apps Inventor 2 platform and is mainly made with five function buttons containing electrical information as the user’s options. The EML has been successfully developed with more options and information with just one application.

Emotions identification utilizing periodic handwriting on mobile surfaces

The purpose of this study is to between the learners’ emotional characteristics and styles in touch screen environments. We propose a method to identify the variety of learners' boredom in the learning process utilising handwriting data. The novelty of the method is to avoid explicit polling of learners how do they feel. We use the recurring acquiring of personal handwriting data utilising the computational power of both a mobile device and cloud-based resources. Also, we use machine learning-based sentiment detection in the research. We smoothly inject periodic handwriting tests convolving them with learning objects to study the correlation between learners’ emotions dynamic, they demonstrate, and the ability to focus and think critically. With the help of machine-learning methods and new communication protocols, we can step up the student-centric mobile-based education process by taking advantage of the latest achievements in a big data analysis and cloud computing. Also, we clarify the conceptual model for the testbed used in the experiment. The findings may likely impact the future personalized e-learning systems.
