Bispidine based Hg(II) 1D Coordination Polymers of Helical Topology: Stability, Selective Adsorption and 1D to 2D Dimensionality Change via SC-to-SC Transformation.

Bispidine based Hg(II) coordination polymers of helical topology CP-MeOH and CP-EtOH are almost isostructural (they mainly differ for the solvent included in their lattice and by a small % in unit cell parameters) but they differ for everything else: i) their intrinsic stability, ii) their ability to adsorb solvents upon prior evacuation, iii) their accessible structural transformations. In particular, one of the two starting materials, once evacuated, is capable to adsorb methanol from atmospheres containing binary and ternary mixtures of volatile organic compounds (MeOH, CHCl3 and EtOH) under ambient conditions (25 °C, 1 atm) and with a marked selectivity. The other one is not, but undergoes a 1D to 2D dimensionality change which can be monitored in situ by SC-XRD through a SC-to-SC process.

The application of PTR-MS and non-targeted analysis to characterize VOCs emitted from a plastic recycling facility fire.

On April 11th, 2023, the My Way Trading (MWT) recycling facility in Richmond, Indiana caught fire, mandating the evacuation of local residents and necessitating the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct air monitoring. The EPA detected elevated levels of plastic combustion-related air pollutants, including hydrogen cyanide and benzene. We aimed to identify these and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present as well as to identify the potential hazard of each compound for various human health effects. To identify the VOCs, we conducted air monitoring at sites within and bordering the evacuation zone using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and non-targeted analysis (NTA). To facilitate risk assessment of the emitted VOCs, we used the EPA Hazard Comparison Dashboard. We identified 46 VOCs, within and outside the evacuation zone, with average detection levels above local background levels measured in Middletown, OH. Levels of hydrogen cyanide and 4 other VOCs were at least 1.8-fold higher near the incidence site in comparison to background levels and displayed unique temporal and spatial patterns. The 46 VOCs identified had the highest hazardous potential for eye and skin irritation, with approximately 45% and 39%, respectively, of the VOCs classified as high and very high hazards for these endpoints. Notably, all detected VOC levels were below the hazard thresholds set for single VOC exposures; however, hazard thresholds for exposure to VOC mixtures are currently unclear. This study serves as a proof-of-concept that PTR-MS coupled with NTA can facilitate rapid identification and hazard assessment of VOCs emitted following anthropogenic disasters. Furthermore, it demonstrates that this approach may augment future disaster responses to quantify additional VOCs present in complex combustion mixtures.

Effect of the component and the concentration ratio on the removal of volatile organic compound mixtures by non-thermal plasma

Abstract The feasibility and efficiency of the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by non-thermal plasmas(NTP) has been extensive investigated and proved in laboratory experiments with single target component. In practical, multicomponent VOCs are emitted during industrial production. It is urgent need to study the abatement of multicomponent VOCs to evaluate the effectiveness of NTP technology in application, and explore the impact of interactions between VOCs components on degradation efficiency. This study focused on the degradation of VOCs mixtures composed of toluene (TOL), acetone (AC), and ethyl acetate (EA) by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in room temperature. Through changing the target gas in turn and the concentration ratio of additive gas in binary mixture, the influence of the composition and the concentration ratio of the additive gases on the target gas degradation have been investigated by comparing the decomposition of the single compound. The results showed that AC and EA had little or no inhibitory effect on degradation of TOL. When AC was added and degraded together with TOL, the degradation rate of TOL remained almost unchanged with slight fluctuations in the range of 75.3 ± 1.0% as the ratio of added AC increased. However, TOL significantly inhibited the degradation of EA, and AC, and more seriously on AC. When the ratio of added TOL increased, the degradation rates of EA or AC changed from 41.1% or 34.5% to 29.8% or 12.2%, which were 11.3% or 22.3% reduced respectively. It’s indicated that there was a mutual inhibitory effect between the AC and EA when they were degraded together, and a stronger inhibitory effect of EA on AC was observed. When the ratio of added AC to EA changed from 0:1 to 3:1, the degradation rate of EA decreased by 9.5%, from 49.8% to 40.3%. When the ratio of added EA to AC changed from 0:1 to 3:1, the degradation rate of AC decreased by 16.0%, from 37.9% to 21.9%.

Dynamic simulation and analysis of dichloromethane-acetone, dichloromethane-trichloromethane and dichloromethane-toluene VOC mixture abatement systems under transient feed conditions

Minimisation of environmental footprint in line with sustainability goals rests at the top of the agenda of the pharmaceutical industry. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), while essential to primary pharmaceutical manufacturing, are solvents whose emissions pose a risk to human health and ecosystems. Adsorption on activated carbon beds is an established technology for end of pipe emissions control, which, however, faces efficiency limitations by quick and irregular bed saturation due to complex, transient feeds. This study employs a validated nonisothermal, multicomponent adsorption model to quantitatively assess the exact effect and potential value of waste stream feed sequencing towards activated carbon bed utilisation optimisation. Our results indicate that gradual increase of dichloromethane feed concentration in combination with a low, constant inlet concentration of the strongly adsorbing component leads to the latest breakthrough onset for the dichloromethane-acetone, dichloromethane-chloroform and dichloromethane-toluene mixtures, paving the way to industrial VOC emission abatement scheduling and process optimisation.

Single and mixed effects of multiple volatile organic compounds exposure on hematological parameters in the U.S. adult population

BackgroundMost research exploring the correlation between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hematological parameters have focused on single VOCs. Our study aimed to explore the single and combined effects of VOCs on hematological parameters through three statistical models. MethodsData from 4 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used in this study. The correlations between single exposure to 16 VOCs and hematological parameters in the general population were assessed by weighted multiple linear regression. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to explore the relationship between the combined important VOCs selected by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and hematological parameters, as well as the effects of smoking status on them. ResultsA total of 4089 adults were included in the study. We found that a variety of VOCs were significantly associated with hematological parameters. Among them, N-acetyl-S-(benzyl)-l-cysteine (BMA) was significantly negatively correlated with white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), lymphocyte, and neutrophil counts. N-acetyl-S-(3-hydroxypropyl-1-methyl)-l-cysteine (HPMMA) was significantly positively correlated with WBC, monocyte, lymphocyte, and neutrophil counts. In the WQS analysis, the WQS index of the VOCs mixtures was positively correlated with WBC (β: 0.031; P < 0.001), monocyte (0.023; P = 0.021), and neutrophil (0.040; P = 0.001) counts, while negatively associated with RBC (−0.013; P < 0.001) counts. The BKMR model revealed that combined exposure to VOCs levels ≥70th percentile was significantly associated with lower RBC counts, and BMA was identified as the dominant contributor. Smoking significantly influenced the relationship between VOCs and hematological parameters. ConclusionsOur study indicated the effects of single and overall VOCs exposure on hematological parameters and suggested the hematotoxicity as well as pro-inflammatory effects of VOCs, which had strong public health implications for reducing the potential health hazards of VOCs exposure to the hematologic system.

Absorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by polymer tubing: implications for indoor air and use as a simple gas-phase volatility separation technique

Abstract. Previous studies have demonstrated volatility-dependent absorption of gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to Teflon and other polymers. Polymer–VOC interactions are relevant for atmospheric chemistry sampling, as gas–wall partitioning in polymer tubing can cause delays and biases during measurements. They are also relevant to the study of indoor chemistry, where polymer-based materials are abundant (e.g., carpets and paints). In this work, we quantify the absorptive capacities of multiple tubing materials, including four nonconductive polymers (important for gas sampling and indoor air quality), four electrically conductive polymers and two commercial steel coatings (for gas and particle sampling). We compare their performance to previously characterized materials. To quantify the absorptive capacities, we expose the tubing to a series of ketones in the volatility range 104–109 µg m−3 and monitor transmission. For slow-diffusion polymers (e.g., perfluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA) Teflon and nylon), absorption is limited to a thin surface layer, and a single-layer absorption model can fit the data well. For fast-diffusion polymers (e.g., polyethylene and conductive silicone), a larger depth of the polymer is available for diffusion, and a multilayer absorption model is needed. The multilayer model allows fitting solid-phase diffusion coefficients for different materials, which range from 4×10-9 to 4×10-7 cm2 s−1. These diffusion coefficients are ∼ 8 orders of magnitude larger than literature values for fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) Teflon film. This enormous difference explains the differences in VOC absorption measured here. We fit an equivalent absorptive mass (CW, µg m−3) for each absorptive material. We found PFA to be the least absorptive, with CW ∼ 105 µg m−3, and conductive silicone to be the most absorptive, with CW ∼ 1013 µg m−3. PFA transmits VOCs easily and intermediate-volatility species (IVOCs) with quantifiable delays. In contrast, conductive silicone tubing transmits only the most volatile VOCs, denuding all lower-volatility species. Semi-volatile species (SVOCs) are very difficult to sample quantitatively through any tubing material. We demonstrate a system combining several slow- and fast-diffusion tubing materials that can be used to separate a mixture of VOCs into volatility classes. New conductive silicone tubing contaminated the gas stream with siloxanes, but this effect was reduced 10 000-fold for aged tubing, while maintaining the same absorptive properties. SilcoNert (tested in this work) and Silonite (tested in previous work) steel coatings showed gas transmission that was almost as good as PFA, but since they undergo adsorption, their delay times may be humidity- and concentration-dependent.

Association of volatile organic compound exposure with metabolic syndrome and its components: a nationwide cross-sectional study

Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a health issue consisting of multiple metabolic abnormalities. The impact of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on MetS and its components remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess the associations of individual urinary metabolites of VOC (mVOCs) and mVOC mixtures with MetS and its components among the general adult population in the United States.Methods A total of 5345 participants with eligible data were filtered from the 2011–2020 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to assess the associations of individual mVOCs with MetS and its components. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression models were constructed to identify more relevant mVOCs. The weight quantile sum regression model was applied to further explore the links between mVOC co-exposure and MetS and its components.ResultsThe results indicated positive associations between multiple mVOCs and MetS, including CEMA, DHBMA, and HMPMA. CEMA was found to be positively correlated with all components of MetS. HMPMA was associated with elevated triglyceride (TG), reduced high-density lipoprotein, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) impairment; 3HPMA was associated with an elevated risk of high TG and FBG impairment; and DHBMA had positive associations with elevated TG and high blood pressure. The co-exposure of LASSO-selected mVOCs was associated with an increased risk of elevated TG, high blood pressure, and FBG impairment.ConclusionPositive associations of certain individual urinary mVOCs and mVOC mixtures with MetS and its components were observed by utilizing multiple statistical models and large-scale national data. These findings may serve as the theoretical basis for future experimental and mechanistic studies and have important implications for public health.

Increased oxidative stress in shoe industry workers with low-level exposure to a mixture of volatile organic compounds.

This study aimed to assess the redox status and trace metal levels in 49 shoe industry workers (11 men and 38 women) occupationally exposed to a mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which includes aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, ethers, and carboxylic acids. All measured VOCs were below the permitted occupational exposure limits. The control group included 50 unexposed participants (25 men and 25 women). The following plasma parameters were analysed: superoxide anion (O2 •-), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), total oxidative status (TOS), prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), oxidative stress index (OSI), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) enzyme activity, total SH group content (SHG), and total antioxidant status (TAS). Trace metal levels (copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, and manganese) were analysed in whole blood. All oxidative stress and antioxidative defence parameters were higher in the exposed workers than controls, except for PON1 activity. Higher Fe, Mg, and Zn, and lower Cu were observed in the exposed vs control men, while the exposed women had higher Fe and lower Mg, Zn, and Cu than their controls. Our findings confirm that combined exposure to a mixture of VOCs, even at permitted levels, may result in additive or synergistic adverse health effects and related disorders. This raises concern about current risk assessments, which mainly rely on the effects of individual chemicals, and calls for risk assessment approaches that can explain combined exposure to multiple chemicals.

Chemical Composition and Optical Properties of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Photooxidation of Volatile Organic Compound Mixtures.

The chemical and optical properties of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) have been widely studied through environmental chamber experiments, and some of the results have been parametrized in atmospheric models to help understand their radiative effects and climate influence. While most chamber studies investigate the aerosol formed from a single volatile organic compound (VOC), the potential interactions between reactive intermediates derived from VOC mixtures are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the SOA formed from pure and mixtures of anthropogenic (phenol and 1-methylnaphthalene) and/or biogenic (longifolene) VOCs using continuous-flow, high-NOx photooxidation chamber experiments to better mimic ambient conditions. SOA optical properties, including single scattering albedo (SSA), mass absorption coefficient (MAC), and refractive index (RI) at 375 nm, and chemical composition, including the formation of oxygenated organic compounds, organic-nitrogen compounds (including organonitrates and nitro-organics), and the molecular structure of the major chromophores, were explored. Additionally, the imaginary refractive index values of SOA in the multi-VOC system were predicted using a linear-combination assumption and compared with the measured values. When two VOCs were oxidized simultaneously, we found evidence for changes in SOA chemical composition compared to SOA formed from single-VOC systems, and this change led to nonlinear effects on SOA optical properties. The nonlinear effects were found to vary between different systems.

Using Machine Learning to Overcome Interfering Oxygen Effects in a Graphene Volatile Organic Compound Sensor.

Discriminating between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for applications including disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring, is often complicated by the presence of interfering compounds such as oxygen. Graphene sensors are effective at detecting VOCs; however, they are also known to be highly sensitive to oxygen. Therefore, the combined effects of each of these gases on graphene sensors must be understood. In this work, we use graphene variable capacitor (varactor) sensors to examine the cross-selectivity of oxygen at 3 concentrations and 3 VOCs (ethanol, methanol, and methyl ethyl ketone) at 5 concentrations each. The sensor responses exhibit distinct shapes dependent on the relative concentrations in mixtures of oxygen and VOCs. Because the entire response shape is therefore informative for distinguishing between each gas mixture, a classification algorithm that utilizes entire sequences of data is needed. Accordingly, a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is used to classify the mixtures and VOC concentrations. The model achieves 100% accurate classification of the VOC type, even in the presence of varying levels of oxygen. When the VOC type and VOC concentration are classified, we show that the sensors can provide VOC concentration resolution within approximately 200 ppm. Throughout this work, we also demonstrate that an effective gas mixture classification can be achieved, even while the sensors exhibit varied drift patterns typical of graphene sensors. This is made possible due to the data analysis and machine learning methods employed.

Identifying and correcting interferences to PTR-ToF-MS measurements of isoprene and other urban volatile organic compounds

Abstract. Proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) is a technique commonly used to measure ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban, rural, and remote environments. PTR-ToF-MS is known to produce artifacts from ion fragmentation, which complicates the interpretation and quantification of key atmospheric VOCs. This study evaluates the extent to which fragmentation and other ionization processes impact urban measurements of the PTR-ToF-MS ions typically assigned to isoprene (m/z 69, C5H8H+), acetaldehyde (m/z 45, CH3CHO+), and benzene (m/z 79, C6H6H+). Interferences from fragmentation are identified using gas chromatography (GC) pre-separation, and the impact of these interferences is quantified using ground-based and airborne measurements in a number of US cities, including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, and Detroit. In urban regions with low biogenic isoprene emissions (e.g., Las Vegas), fragmentation from higher-carbon aldehydes and cycloalkanes emitted from anthropogenic sources may contribute to m/z 69 by as much as 50 % during the day, while the majority of the signal at m/z 69 is attributed to fragmentation during the night. Interferences are a higher fraction of m/z 69 during airborne studies, which likely results from differences in the reactivity between isoprene and the interfering species along with the subsequent changes to the VOC mixture at higher altitudes. For other PTR masses, including m/z 45 and m/z 79, interferences are observed due to fragmentation and O2+ ionization of VOCs typically used in solvents, which are becoming a more important source of anthropogenic VOCs in urban areas. We present methods to correct these interferences, which provide better agreement with GC measurements of isomer-specific molecules. These observations show the utility of deploying GC pre-separation for the interpretation PTR-ToF-MS spectra.

Identification of Different Classes of VOCs Based on Optical Emission Spectra Using a Dielectric Barrier Helium Plasma Coupled with a Mini Spectrometer.

In this study, a micro helium dielectric barrier discharge (μHDBD) plasma device fabricated using 3D printing and molding techniques was coupled with a mini spectrometer to detect and identify different classes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using optical emission spectrometry (OES). We tested 11 VOCs belonging to three different classes (straight-chain alkanes, aromatics, and polar organic compounds). Our results clearly demonstrate that the optical emission spectra of different classes of VOCs show clear differences, and therefore, can be used for identification. Additionally, the emission spectra of VOCs with a similar structure (such as n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, and n-nonane) have similar optical emission spectrum shape. Acetone and ethanol also have similar emission wavelengths, but they show different line intensities for the same concentrations. We also found that the side-chain group of aromatics will also affect the emission spectra even though they have a similar structure (all have a benzene ring). Moreover, our μHDBD-OES system can also identify multiple compounds in VOC mixtures. Our work also demonstrates the possibility of identifying different classes of VOCs by the OES shape.

Development of the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-based aroma designer capable of modifying volatile chemical compositions in complex odors.

Many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are used to produce various commercial products with aromas mimicking natural products. The VOCs responsible for aromas have been identified from many natural products. The current major strategy is to analyze chemical compositions and aroma qualities of individual VOCs using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and GC-olfactometry. However, such analyses cannot determine whether candidate VOCs contribute to the characteristic aroma in mixtures of many VOCs. In this study, we developed a GC/MS-based VOC collection/omission system that can modify the VOC compositions of samples easily and rapidly. The system is composed of GC/MS with a switching unit that can change gas flow routes between MS and a VOC collection device. We first applied this system to prepare gas samples for omission tests, and the aroma qualities of VOC mixtures with and without some VOCs were evaluated by panelists. If aroma qualities were different between the 2 samples, the omitted VOCs were likely key odorants. By collecting VOCs in a gas bag attached to the collection device and transferring some VOCs to MS, specific VOCs could be omitted easily from the VOC mixture. The system could prepare omission samples without chemical identification, preparation of each VOC, and laborious techniques for mixing VOCs, thus overcoming the limitations of previous methods of sample preparation. Finally, the system was used to prepare artificial aromas by replacing VOC compositions between different samples for screening of key odorants. In conclusion, the system developed here can improve aroma research by identifying key odorants from natural products.

MnOx catalysts supported on SBA-15 and MCM-41 silicas for a competitive VOCs mixture oxidation: In-situ DRIFTS investigations

The catalytic oxidation of different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been widely studied for several decades within the field of air depollution. However, there is still much to understand regarding the effects that these VOCs have on each other when they are blended together in the reaction mixture, as would be expected in many emissions. Herein, the catalytic oxidation of toluene and 2-propanol on supported manganese oxides under both single and binary VOCs oxidation conditions has been studied. We have found the catalyst activity for VOCs mineralization and its selectivity towards other by-products (i.e., acetone or propylene from 2-propanol) to be strongly dependent on the reaction conditions, the catalyst redox properties and support acidity. We have also assessed the promotion/inhibition effects derived from the VOCs mixture and proposed the reaction mechanism in each case by means of in-situ DRIFTS measurements.

Exposure to volatile organic compounds induces cardiovascular toxicity that may involve DNA methylation

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are common air pollutants and water contaminants. We previously found maternal exposure to VOCs was associated with offspring congenital heart disease (CHD). However, little information is available about the effects of VOCs on cardiovascular development at embryonic stage and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of a mixture of six VOCs on cardiovascular development in zebrafish embryos. Embryos were exposed to different concentrations of VOCs mixture (32 mg/L, 64 mg/L and 128 mg/L) for 96 h, cardiovascular abnormalities including elongated heart shape, increased distance between sinus venosus and bulbus arteriosus, slowed circulation and altered heart rate were observed in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Meanwhile, VOCs exposure increased global DNA methylation levels in embryos. Analysis identified hundreds of differentially methylated sites and the enrichment of differentially methylated sites on cardiovascular development. Two differentially methylated-associated genes involved in MAPK pathway, hgfa and ntrk1, were identified to be the potential genes mediating the effects of VOCs. By enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, altered human serum hgf and ntrk1 levels were detected in abnormal pregnancies exposed to higher VOCs levels with fetal CHD. For the first time, our study revealed exposure to VOCs induced severe cardiovascular abnormalities in zebrafish embryos. The toxicity might result from alterations in DNA methylation and corresponding expression levels of genes involved in MAPK pathway. Our study provides important information for the risk of VOCs exposure on embryonic cardiovascular development.

Experimental study of adsorption characteristic of novel pyrazole-based metal-organic frameworks for volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the major indoor air pollutants that affect human health, comfort, and working performance. Sorbent material and adsorption technology are considered to be one of the most effective and economical ways to remove VOCs from indoor air. Among many sorbent materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received more and more attention because of their superior performance in capturing a variety of compounds. In this work, the adsorption characteristic of a newly synthesized pyrazole-based metal-organic framework (Al-pda) for different VOCs was investigated. First, the single-pass VOC adsorption rates of Al-pda and activated carbon were tested under different low-concentration VOCs mixture, which is in line with the practical application in the indoor environment. The results showed that Al-pda had an especially high adsorption ability for formaldehyde. The single-pass efficiency of formaldehyde adsorption was up to 89% at the beginning of the test and gradually stabilized at 66%. Compared with activated carbon, Al-pda had significantly higher selectivity and adsorption efficiency for the capture of formaldehyde. Then the effect of relative humidity on formaldehyde adsorption was investigated. After increasing the relative humidity from 15% to 65%, Al-pda’s formaldehyde single-pass adsorption rate almost remained at a similar level. Preliminary research showed that Al-pda is a promising material for the selective adsorption of indoor formaldehyde under humid conditions. More work is needed to probe this new MOF’s adsorption mechanism and application method.

Removal of cyclohexane vapors from air in biotrickling filters: Effects of gas mixture composition and circular economy approach

This work presents results of investigations on biotrickling filtration of air polluted with cyclohexane co-treated in binary, ternary and quaternary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) mixtures, including vapors of hexane, toluene and ethanol. The removal of cyclohexane from a gas mixture depends on the physicochemical properties of the co-treated VOCs and the lower the hydrophobicity of the VOC, the higher the removal efficiency of cyclohexane. In this work, the performance of biotrickling filters treating VOCs mixtures is discussed based on surface tension of trickling liquid for the first time. A mixed natural – synthetic packing for biotrickling filters was utilized, showing promising performance and limited maintenance requirements. Maximum elimination capacity of about 95 g/(m 3·h) of cyclohexane was reached for the total VOCs inlet loading of about 450 g/(m 3·h). This work presents also a novel approach of combining biological air treatment with management of a spent trickling liquid in the perspective of circular economy assumptions. The waste liquid phase was applied to the plant cultivation, showing a potential for e.g. enhanced production of energetic biomass or polluted soil phytoremediation.

Gas-responsive two-dimensional metal–organic framework composites for trace visualization of volatile organic compounds

Highly sensitive and specific identification of complex volatile organic compound mixtures has always been a huge challenge in the field of gas detection. To address this issue, the gas-responsive two-dimensional metal–organic framework (MOF) composites have been designed for fabricating a colorimetric sensor arrays for extremely sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The physically exfoliated MOF nanosheets Zn2(bim)4 with large surface area and abundant unsaturated active sites were used for loading various dyes to form dye/Zn2(bim)4 composites. Due to the protective effect on dye activity and preconcentration for VOCs, the dye/Zn2(bim)4 composites-based colorimetric sensor arrays showed significantly enhanced sensitivity compared with the corresponding dyes for the detection of various VOCs. The mechanical flexibility of the dye/MOF nanosheets endowed the excellent film-forming properties on various substrates for fabricating the colorimetric sensor arrays. Besides owing to the hydrophobic property and the protection of the Zn2(bim)4 nanosheets, the dye/Zn2(bim)4 sensor arrays exhibited excellent anti-interference including humidity and temperature influence. On the basis of the fantastic properties of dye/Zn2(bim)4 composites for VOCs detection, the dye/Zn2(bim)4 sensor arrays were applied for the early perception of the plant disease late blight via ultra-sensitive and highly specific sensing the VOCs released from the infected plants.

Broad-spectrum antagonistic potential of Bacillus spp. volatiles against Rhizoctonia solani and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae.

Rhizoctonia solani and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) are the two major diseases affecting the quality and quantity of rice production. In the current study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Bacillus spp. were used as green biocontrol agents for plant diseases. In in vitro experiments, Bacillus spp. FZB42, NMTD17, and LLTC93-VOCs displayed strong antimicrobial volatile activity with inhibition rates of 76, 66, and 78% for R. solani and 78, 81, and 76% for Xoo, respectively, compared to control. The synthetic VOCs, namely Pentadecane (PDC), Benzaldehyde (BDH), 1,2-Benz isothiazol-3(2H)-one (1,2-BIT), and mixture (MIX) of VOCs showed high volatile activity with inhibition rates of 86, 86, 89, and 92% against R. solani and 81, 81, 82, and 86%, respectively, against Xoo as compared to control. In addition, the scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM and TEM) analyses were performed to examine the effect of Bacillus and synthetic VOC treatments on R. solani and Xoo morphology. The analysis revealed the deformed and irregularized morphology of R. solani mycelia and Xoo cells after VOC treatments. The microscopic analysis showed that the rapid inhibition was due to severe oxidative productions inside the R. solani mycelia and Xoo cells. By using molecular docking, it was determined that the synthetic VOCs entered the active binding site of trehalase and NADH dehydrogenase proteins, causing R. solani and Xoo cells to die prematurely and an accumulation of ROS. In the greenhouse experiment, FZB42, NMTD17, and LLTC93-VOCs significantly reduced the lesions of R. solani 8, 7, and 6 cm, and Xoo 7, 6, and 6 cm, respectively, then control. The synthetic VOCs demonstrated that the PDC, BDH, 1,2-BIT, and MIX-VOCs significantly reduced R. solani lesions on leaves 6, 6, 6, and 5 cm and Xoo 6, 5, 5, and 4 cm, respectively, as compared to control. Furthermore, plant defence-related genes and antioxidant enzymes were upregulated in rice plants. These findings provide novel mechanisms by which Bacillus antimicrobial VOCs control plant diseases.

Effects of isoprene on the ozonolysis of Δ3-carene and β-caryophyllene: Mechanisms of secondary organic aerosol formation and cross-dimerization

Elucidating the mutual effects between the different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is crucial for comprehending the formation mechanism of atmospheric secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Here, the mixed VOCs experiments of isoprene and Δ3-carene/β-caryophyllene were carried out in the presence of O3 using an indoor smog chamber. The suppression effect of isoprene was recognized by the scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer, online vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) photoionization aerosol mass spectrometry, and quantum chemical calculations. The results indicate that the suppression effect of isoprene on the ozonolysis of Δ3-carene and β-caryophyllene shows fluctuating and monotonous trends, respectively. The carbon content of the precursor could be the main factor for regulating the strength of the suppression effect. Plausible structures and formation mechanisms of several new products generated from the single VOC precursor and VOC-cross-reaction are proposed, which enrich the category of VOC oxidation products. Meanwhile, a new dimerization mechanism of the RO2 + R'O2 reaction is suggested, which offers an intriguing perspective on the gas phase formation process of particle phase accretion products. The present findings provide valuable insights into clarifying the pivotal roles played by isoprene in the interplay between different VOCs and understanding of SOA formation mechanisms of VOC mixtures, especially nearby the emission origins.
