On the prediction of Gibbs free energy of mixing of binary liquid alloys

Experimental measurement of thermodynamic properties and of phase equilibrium for some systems is complicated since these systems may be reactive and/or expensive to study. They may contain radioactive or scarce components and be otherwise highly unusual for bench top manipulation. For these systems, predicting thermodynamic properties using theoretical and/or empirical methods is of great interest. In this paper, the Engel–Brewer method, the Witusiewicz, Sommer and Faber relations, the Miedema and Hard-Sphere model have been reviewed and evaluated on their suitability for calculating mixing properties of liquid solutions. Analysis of the results indicated that the Engel–Brewer method is not robust, while the Miedema model, with some modifications, has been evaluated as an appropriate one for predicting enthalpy of mixing of liquid solutions. Moreover, the Witusiewicz relation and Hard-Sphere model were proved to be more reliable compared to that of Sommer and Faber for predicting entropy of mixing of liquid alloys. Finally, based on the current work, the combined Miedema–Witusiewicz or Miedema/Hard-Sphere models are recommended for parameterizing Gibbs free energy of mixing for liquid solutions.

Thermodynamic and surface properties of binary liquid alloys

The first order interaction parameters using Maclaurin infinite series have been used to investigate thermodynamic and surface properties of binary liquid alloys. The evaluated excess free energy of mixing of binary liquid alloys and activity coefficients of its constituent atoms are in agreement with the experiment. The study of concentration-concentration fluctuations at long wave length limit (S CC (0)) and chemical short range order parameter (α 1 ) reveals that MgZn liquid binary alloy is a complex forming alloy and it is more ordered towards Zn-rich end than Mg-rich end. The surface tension of Zn is lowered with the addition of Mg. Mg atoms are more active at the surface than that in the bulk throughout the whole concentration range where as it is up to 40% of concentration of Zn in the case of Zn atoms. Mg atoms segregate to the surface in MgZn liquid binary alloy but the degree of segregation is low.

Mixing enthalpies in liquid Ag–Sr alloys

The heats of mixing of binary liquid alloys of silver with strontium were measured by isoperibolic calorimetry at 1300 K. The experimental data show exothermic effects of alloy formation. The minimum integral enthalpy of mixing is −15.3 kJ mol −1 at 43 at.% strontium.

Thermochemistry of binary liquid alloys of copper with barium and lanthanide metals (europium, dysprosium and ytterbium)

The heats of mixing of binary liquid alloys of copper with barium, europium and ytterbium in the copper-rich concentration region and the heats of mixing in the Cu-Dy system over the total composition range were measured by isoperibolic calorimetry. The heats of formation increase with increasing atomic number, i.e. in agreement with previous investigations for other Cu-Ln melts. The component interaction energy is found to increase along the row Ba, Eu, Yb, Dy. An apparent variation in the partial mixing enthalpies with atomic size factor which contributes positively to the alloy formation energy is observed. Model calculations of integral enthalpy for the Cu-Ba system based on the atomic size difference factor allow one to estimate the mixing enthalpy in the total concentration region.

Thermochemistry of binary liquid alloys of silver with rare earth metals

The heats of mixing of binary liquid alloys of silver with barium and lanthanoid metals (La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy and Yb) were determined by isoperibolic calorimetry. The experimental data show the exothermic effects of alloy formation, thus confirming the strong interactions of the components in AgLn melts which increase from divalent (Ba, Eu, Yb) to trivalent metals, and from light to heavy rare earths. The results are discussed on the basis of the effective valence model of rare earths. The associated solution model calculations and characteristic dependence of the entropy of mixing show that these alloys have a short-range order in liquid state.
