Selling alcohol at college sports events may sound like a terrible idea, but it is lucrative for the colleges. During its first year of alcohol sales at home events in 2021, Boise State University earned almost $1 million, according to a report last month in the Idaho Statesman. This information was not published in a press release—the news organization had to request it as a public record. What the college athletic department receives specifically: 26% to 43% in commission from alcohol sales at games. According to a spokesman for the university, Boise State earned 43% of beer sales commissions at all six home football games in 2021. “Former Boise State Athletic Director Curt Apsey said he wasn't a fan of mixing alcohol and college athletics, but new AD Jeramiah Dickey doesn't have the same reservations,” according to the Idaho Statesman. “He made it clear that he was open to the idea as soon as he was hired in January 2021.”
