Analysis and Design of a Low-Noise X-Band MIC Mixer 1-GHz IF Amplifier

The analysis and design of a low-noise 500-MHz bandwidth MIC image- and sum-enhanced 12-GHz mixer-IF amplifier is described. Typical midband noise figures of 6.3 dB have been achieved.

Statistical gain fluctuations of microwave amplifiers measured with a Dicke-Radiometer

The dependence of the minimum detectable temperatur-difference\(\overline {\Delta T} _{min} \) of a Dicke-radiometer on gain variations in the absence of an input temperature difference is used to measure the spectrum of the low frequency gain variations of variousX-band amplifiers, namely travellingwave tubes (TWT), tunnel-diode amplifiers (TDA) and a mixer IF-amplifier. For a radiometer input temperature difference unequal zero the integral gain variations ΔG/G for TDA's were investigated, and it will be shown that an expression due to Yaroshenko for gain variations of audio amplifiers can be adapted for microwave amplifiers.

X-Band Integrated Circuit Mixer with Reactively Terminated Image

An X-band mixer using GaAs Schottky barrier diodes with a thin-film 500-MHz IF preamplifier was developed using hybrid microwave integrated circuit techniques. The balanced mixer had filters to provide a short circuit at the image frequency. The entire mixer preamplifier occupied an area of only 0.38 square inches and had a noise figure of 6.7 dB which corresponded quite closely to the theoretical noise figure considering all losses. The thin-film IF amplifier alone had a 2.2-dB noise figure and the mixer IF amplifier coupling network had a loss of 0.4 dB.
