Quantum nature of reactivity modification in vibrational polariton chemistry.

In this work, we present a mixed quantum-classical open quantum system dynamics method for studying rate modifications of ground-state chemical reactions in an optical cavity under vibrational strong-coupling conditions. In this approach, the cavity radiation mode is treated classically with a mean-field nuclear force averaging over the remaining degrees of freedom, both within the system and the environment, which are handled quantum mechanically within the hierarchical equations of motion framework. Using this approach, we conduct a comparative analysis by juxtaposing the mixed quantum-classical results with fully quantum-mechanical simulations. After eliminating spurious peaks that can occur when not using the rigorous definition of the rate constant, we confirm the crucial role of the quantum nature of the cavity radiation mode in reproducing the resonant peak observed in the cavity frequency-dependent rate profile. In other words, it appears necessary to explicitly consider the quantized photonic states in studying reactivity modification in vibrational polariton chemistry (at least for the model systems studied in this work), as these phenomena stem from cavity-induced reaction pathways involving resonant energy exchanges between photons and molecular vibrational transitions.

Vibrational energy relaxation in shock-heated CO/N2/Ar mixtures.

Experimental and numerical studies were performed on the vibrational energy relaxation in shock-heated CO/N2/Ar mixtures. A laser absorption technique was applied to the time-dependent rovibrational temperature time-history measurements. The vibrational relaxation data of reflected-shock-heated CO were summarized at 1720-3230K. In shock-tube experiments, the rotational temperature of CO quickly reached equilibrium, whereas a relaxation process was found in the time-dependent vibrational temperature. For the mixture with 1.0% CO and 10.0% N2, the vibrational excitation caused a decrease in the macroscopic thermodynamic temperature of the test gas. In the simulations, the state-to-state (StS) approach was employed, where the vibrational energy levels of CO and N2 are treated as pseudo-species. The vibrational state-specific inelastic rate coefficients of N2-Ar collisions were calculated using the mixed quantum-classical method based on a newly developed three-dimensional potential energy surface. The StS predictions agreed well with the measurements, whereas deviations were found between the Schwartz-Slawsky-Herzfeld formula predictions and the measurements. The Millikan-White vibrational relaxation data of the N2-Ar system were found to have the most significant impact on the model predictions via sensitivity analysis. The vibrational relaxation data of the N2-Ar system were then modified according to the experimental data and StS results, providing an indirect way to optimize the vibrational relaxation data of a specific system. Moreover, the vibrational distribution functions of CO and N2 and the effects of the vibration-vibration-translation energy transfer path on the thermal nonequilibrium behaviors were highlighted.

Experimental and numerical studies on the thermal nonequilibrium behaviors of CO with Ar, He, and H2

The time-dependent rotational and vibrational temperatures were measured to study the shock-heated thermal nonequilibrium behaviors of CO with Ar, He, and H2 as collision partners. Three interference-free transition lines in the fundamental vibrational band of CO were applied to the fast, in situ, and state-specific measurements. Vibrational relaxation times of CO were summarized over a temperature range of 1110–2820 K behind reflected shocks. The measured rotational temperature instantaneously reached an equilibrium state behind shock waves. The measured vibrational temperature experienced a relaxation process before reaching the equilibrium state. The measured vibrational temperature time histories were compared with predictions based on the Landau–Teller model and the state-to-state approach. The state-to-state approach treats the vibrational energy levels of CO as pseudo-species and accurately describes the detailed thermal nonequilibrium processes behind shock waves. The datasets of state-specific inelastic rate coefficients of CO–Ar, CO–He, CO–CO, and CO–H2 collisions were calculated in this study using the mixed quantum-classical method and the semiclassical forced harmonic oscillator model. The predictions based on the state-to-state approach agreed well with the measured data and nonequilibrium (non-Boltzmann) vibrational distributions were found in the post-shock regions, while the Landau–Teller model predicted slower vibrational temperature time histories than the measured data. Modifications were applied to the Millikan–White vibrational relaxation data of the CO–Ar and CO–H2 systems to improve the performance of the Landau–Teller model. In addition, the thermal nonequilibrium processes behind incident shocks, the acceleration effects of H2O on the relaxation process of CO, and the characterization of vibrational temperature were highlighted.

Nonadiabatic Coupling in Trajectory Surface Hopping: Accurate Time Derivative Couplings by the Curvature-Driven Approximation.

Trajectory surface hopping (TSH) is a widely used mixed quantum-classical dynamics method that is used to simulate molecular dynamics with multiple electronic states. In TSH, time-derivative coupling is employed to propagate the electronic coefficients and in that way to determine when the electronic state on which the nuclear trajectory is propagated switches. In this work, we discuss nonadiabatic TSH dynamics algorithms employing the curvature-driven approximation and overlap-based time derivative couplings, and we report test calculations on six photochemical reactions where we compare the results to one another and to calculations employing analytic nonadiabatic coupling vectors. We correct previous published results thanks to a bug found in the software. We also provide additional, more detailed studies of the time-derivative couplings. Our results show good agreement between curvature-driven algorithms and overlap-based algorithms.

Inelastic N_2+H_2 collisions and quantum-classical rate coefficients: large datasets and machine learning predictions

Rate coefficients for vibrational energy transfer are calculated for collisions between molecular nitrogen and hydrogen in a wide range of temperature and of initial vibrational states (vle 40 for N_2 and wle 10 for H_2). These data are needed for the modelling of discharges in N_2/H_2 plasma or of atmospheric and interstellar medium chemistry in different temperature ranges. The calculations were performed by a mixed quantum-classical method, to recover quantum effects associated with the vibrational motion, on a refined potential energy surface. The obtained rates present striking discrepancies with those evaluated by first-order perturbation theories, like the SSH (Schwartz, Slavsky, Herzfeld) theory, which are often adopted in kinetic modelling. In addition, we present a detailed, though preliminary, analysis on the performance of different Machine Learning models based on the Gaussian Process or Neural Network techniques to produce complete datasets of inelastic scattering rate coefficients. Eventually, by using the selected models, we give the complete dataset (i.e., covering the whole vibrational ladder) of rate coefficients for the textrm{N}_2(v)+textrm{H}_2(0) longrightarrow textrm{N}_2(v-Delta v)+textrm{H}_2(0), Delta v=1,2,3 processes.Graphical abstract

Incoherent nonadiabatic to coherent adiabatic transition of electron transfer in colloidal quantum dot molecules

Electron transfer is a fundamental process in chemistry, biology, and physics. One of the most intriguing questions concerns the realization of the transitions between nonadiabatic and adiabatic regimes of electron transfer. Using colloidal quantum dot molecules, we computationally demonstrate how the hybridization energy (electronic coupling) can be tuned by changing the neck dimensions and/or the quantum dot sizes. This provides a handle to tune the electron transfer from the incoherent nonadiabatic regime to the coherent adiabatic regime in a single system. We develop an atomistic model to account for several states and couplings to the lattice vibrations and utilize the mean-field mixed quantum-classical method to describe the charge transfer dynamics. Here, we show that charge transfer rates increase by several orders of magnitude as the system is driven to the coherent, adiabatic limit, even at elevated temperatures, and delineate the inter-dot and torsional acoustic modes that couple most strongly to the charge transfer dynamics.

Energy-conserving coupled trajectory mixed quantum-classical dynamics.

The coupled-trajectory mixed quantum-classical method (CTMQC), derived from the exact factorization approach, has successfully predicted photo-chemical dynamics in a number of interesting molecules, capturing population transfer and decoherence from first principles. However, due to the approximations made, CTMQC does not guarantee energy conservation. We propose a modified algorithm, CTMQC-E, which redefines the integrated force in the coupled-trajectory term so to restore energy conservation, and demonstrate its accuracy on scattering in Tully's extended coupling region model and photoisomerization in a retinal chromophore model.

Exciton Dissociation in a Model Organic Interface: Excitonic State-Based Surface Hopping versus Multiconfigurational Time-Dependent Hartree.

Quantum dynamical simulations are essential for a molecular-level understanding of light-induced processes in optoelectronic materials, but they tend to be computationally demanding. We introduce an efficient mixed quantum-classical nonadiabatic molecular dynamics method termed eXcitonic state-based Surface Hopping (X-SH), which propagates the electronic Schrödinger equation in the space of local excitonic and charge-transfer electronic states, coupled to the thermal motion of the nuclear degrees of freedom. The method is applied to exciton decay in a 1D model of a fullerene–oligothiophene junction, and the results are compared to the ones from a fully quantum dynamical treatment at the level of the Multilayer Multiconfigurational Time-Dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) approach. Both methods predict that charge-separated states are formed on the 10–100 fs time scale via multiple “hot-exciton dissociation” pathways. The results demonstrate that X-SH is a promising tool advancing the simulation of photoexcited processes from the molecular to the true nanomaterials scale.

Clustering, collision, and relaxation dynamics in pure and doped helium nanoclusters: Density- vs particle-based approaches.

The clustering, collision, and relaxation dynamics of pristine and doped helium nanodroplets is theoretically investigated in cases of pickup and clustering of heliophilic argon, collision of heliophobic cesium atoms, and coalescence of two droplets brought into contact by their mutual long-range van der Waals interaction. Three approaches are used and compared with each other. The He time-dependent density functional theory method considers the droplet as a continuous medium and accounts for its superfluid character. The ring-polymer molecular dynamics method uses a path-integral description of nuclear motion and incorporates zero-point delocalization while bosonic exchange effects are ignored. Finally, the zero-point averaged dynamics approach is a mixed quantum-classical method in which quantum delocalization is described by attaching a frozen wavefunction to each He atom, equivalent to classical dynamics with effective interaction potentials. All three methods predict that the growth of argon clusters is significantly hindered by the helium host droplet due to the impeding shell structure around the dopants and kinematic effects freezing the growing cluster in metastable configurations. The effects of superfluidity are qualitatively manifested by different collision dynamics of the heliophilic atom at high velocities, as well as quadrupole oscillations that are not seen with particle-based methods, for droplets experiencing a collision with cesium atoms or merging with each other.

Energetics of the charge generation in organic donor-acceptor interfaces.

Non-fullerene acceptor materials have posed new paradigms for the design of organic solar cells , whereby efficient carrier generation is obtained with small driving forces, in order to maximize the open-circuit voltage (VOC). In this paper, we use a coarse-grained mixed quantum-classical method, which combines Ehrenfest and Redfield theories, to shed light on the charge generation process in small energy offset interfaces. We have investigated the influence of the energetic driving force as well as the vibronic effects on the charge generation and photovoltaic energy conversion. By analyzing the effects of the Holstein and Peierls vibrational couplings, we find that vibrational couplings produce an overall effect of improving the charge generation. However, the two vibronic mechanisms play different roles: the Holstein relaxation mechanism decreases the charge generation, whereas the Peierls mechanism always assists the charge generation. Moreover, by examining the electron-hole binding energy as a function of time, we evince two distinct regimes for the charge separation: the temperature independent excitonic spread on a sub-100fs timescale and the complete dissociation of the charge-transfer state that occurs on the timescale of tens to hundreds of picoseconds, depending on the temperature. The quantum dynamics of the system exhibits the three regimes of the Marcus electron transfer kinetics as the energy offset of the interface is varied.

Mixed Quantum–Classical Method for Fraud Detection With Quantum Feature Selection

This paper presents a first end-to-end application of a Quantum Support Vector Machine (QSVM) algorithm for a classification problem in the financial payment industry using the IBM Safer Payments and IBM Quantum Computers via the Qiskit software stack. Based on real card payment data, a thorough comparison is performed to assess the complementary impact brought in by the current state-of-the-art Quantum Machine Learning algorithms with respect to the Classical Approach. A new method to search for best features is explored using the Quantum Support Vector Machine's feature map characteristics. The results are compared using fraud specific key performance indicators: Accuracy, Recall, and False Positive Rate, extracted from analyses based on human expertise (rule decisions), classical machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, XGBoost) and quantum based machine learning algorithms using QSVM. In addition, a hybrid classical-quantum approach is explored by using an ensemble model that combines classical and quantum algorithms to better improve the fraud prevention decision. We found, as expected, that the results highly depend on feature selections and algorithms that are used to select them. The QSVM provides a complementary exploration of the feature space which led to an improved accuracy of the mixed quantum-classical method for fraud detection, on a drastically reduced data set to fit current state of Quantum Hardware.

Vibrational Energy Transfer in CO+N2 Collisions: A Database for V-V and V-T/R Quantum-Classical Rate Coefficients.

Knowledge of energy exchange rate constants in inelastic collisions is critically required for accurate characterization and simulation of several processes in gaseous environments, including planetary atmospheres, plasma, combustion, etc. Determination of these rate constants requires accurate potential energy surfaces (PESs) that describe in detail the full interaction region space and the use of collision dynamics methods capable of including the most relevant quantum effects. In this work, we produce an extensive collection of vibration-to-vibration (V–V) and vibration-to-translation/rotation (V–T/R) energy transfer rate coefficients for collisions between CO and N molecules using a mixed quantum-classical method and a recently introduced (A. Lombardi, F. Pirani, M. Bartolomei, C. Coletti, and A. Laganà, Frontiers in chemistry, 7, 309 (2019)) analytical PES, critically revised to improve its performance against ab initio and experimental data of different sources. The present database gives a good agreement with available experimental values of V–V rate coefficients and covers an unprecedented number of transitions and a wide range of temperatures. Furthermore, this is the first database of V–T/R rate coefficients for the title collisions. These processes are shown to often be the most probable ones at high temperatures and/or for highly excited molecules, such conditions being relevant in the modeling of hypersonic flows, plasma, and aerospace applications.

Contrasting Effects of Inhibitors Li+ and Be2+ on Catalytic Cycle of Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3β

Ionic lithium shows rare effectiveness for treating bipolar disorder and is a potential drug for neurodegenerative diseases. Unfortunately, lithium suffers from significant drawbacks, mainly a narrow therapeutic window. Among the targets of lithium, glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) may be responsible for its therapeutic effects. The development of alternative, selective inhibitors of this kinase could prevent lithium side effects, but such efforts have met little success so far. An atomistic understanding of Li+ inhibition and the GSK-3β phosphorylation reaction would therefore facilitate the development of new drugs. In this study, we use extensive sampling of catalytic states with our mixed quantum-classical dynamics method QM/DMD and binding affinities from a competitive metal affinity (CMA) approach to expand the atomistic picture of Li+ GSK-3β inhibition. We compare Li+ action with Be2+ and find our results in agreement with in vitro kinetics studies. Ultimately, our simulations show that Li+ inhibition is driven by decreasing the phosphorylation reaction rate, rather than reducing catalytic turnover through tight binding to different GSK-3β states like Be2+ inhibition. The effect of these metals derive from electrostatic differences and especially their smaller atomic radii compared to the native Mg2+ and thus provide insight for the development of GSK-3β inhibitors based on other paradigms.

Energy exchange rate coefficients from vibrational inelastic O2(Σg-3) + O2(Σg-3) collisions on a new spin-averaged potential energy surface.

A new spin-averaged potential energy surface (PES) for non-reactive O2(Σg-3) + O2(Σg-3) collisions is presented. The potential is formulated analytically according to the nature of the principal interaction components, with the main van der Waals contribution described through the improved Lennard-Jones model. All the parameters involved in the formulation, having a physical meaning, have been modulated in restricted variation ranges, exploiting a combined analysis of experimental and ab initio reference data. The new PES is shown to be able to reproduce a wealth of different physical properties, ranging from the second virial coefficients to transport properties (shear viscosity and thermal conductivity) and rate coefficients for inelastic scattering collisions. Rate coefficients for the vibrational inelastic processes of O2, including both vibration-to-vibration (V-V) and vibration-to-translation/rotation (V-T/R) energy exchanges, were then calculated on this PES using a mixed quantum-classical method. The effective formulation of the potential and its combination with an efficient, yet accurate, nuclear dynamics treatment allowed for the determination of a large database of V-V and V-T/R energy transfer rate coefficients in a wide temperature range.

Nuclear-electronic orbital Ehrenfest dynamics.

The recently developed real-time nuclear-electronic orbital (RT-NEO) approach provides an elegant framework for treating electrons and selected nuclei, typically protons, quantum mechanically in nonequilibrium dynamical processes. However, the RT-NEO approach neglects the motion of the other nuclei, preventing a complete description of the coupled nuclear-electronic dynamics and spectroscopy. In this work, the dynamical interactions between the other nuclei and the electron-proton subsystem are described with the mixed quantum-classical Ehrenfest dynamics method. The NEO-Ehrenfest approach propagates the electrons and quantum protons in a time-dependent variational framework, while the remaining nuclei move classically on the corresponding average electron-proton vibronic surface. This approach includes the non-Born-Oppenheimer effects between the electrons and the quantum protons with RT-NEO and between the classical nuclei and the electron-proton subsystem with Ehrenfest dynamics. Spectral features for vibrational modes involving both quantum and classical nuclei are resolved from the time-dependent dipole moments. This work shows that the NEO-Ehrenfest method is a powerful tool to study dynamical processes with coupled electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom.

Toward monitoring the dissipative vibrational energy flows in open quantum systems by mixed quantum-classical simulations.

In open quantum system dynamics, rich information about the major energy relaxation channels and corresponding relaxation rates can be elucidated by monitoring the vibrational energy flow among individual bath modes. However, such calculations often become tremendously difficult as the complexity of the subsystem-bath coupling increases. In this paper, we attempt to make this task feasible by using a mixed quantum-classical method, the Poisson-bracket mapping equation with non-Hamiltonian modification (PBME-nH) [H. W. Kim and Y. M. Rhee, J. Chem. Phys. 140, 184106 (2014)]. For a quantum subsystem bilinearly coupled to harmonic bath modes, we derive an expression for the mode energy in terms of the classical positions and momenta of the nuclei, while keeping consistency with the energy of the quantum subsystem. The accuracy of the resulting expression is then benchmarked against a numerically exact method by using relatively simple models. Although our expression predicts a qualitatively correct dissipation rate for a range of situations, cases involving a strong vibronic resonance are quite challenging. This is attributed to the inherent lack of quantum back reaction in PBME-nH, which becomes significant when the subsystem strongly interacts with a small number of bath modes. A rigorous treatment of such an effect will be crucial for developing quantitative simulation methods that can handle generic subsystem-bath coupling.

An analysis of isomorphic RPMD in the golden rule limit.

We analyze the golden rule limit of the recently proposed isomorphic ring polymer (iso-RP) method. This method aims to combine an exact expression for the quantum mechanical partition function of a system with multiple electronic states with a pre-existing mixed quantum-classical (MQC) dynamics approximation, such as fewest switches surface hopping. Since the choice of the MQC method adds a degree of flexibility, we simplify the analysis by assuming that the dynamics used correctly reproduces the exact golden rule rate for a nonadiabatic (e.g., electron transfer) reaction in the high temperature limit. Having made this assumption, we obtain an expression for the iso-RP rate in the golden rule limit that is valid at any temperature. We then compare this rate with the exact rate for a series of simple spin-boson models. We find that the iso-RP method does not correctly predict how nuclear quantum effects affect the reaction rate in the golden rule limit. Most notably, it does not capture the quantum asymmetry in a conventional (Marcus) plot of the logarithm of the reaction rate against the thermodynamic driving force, and it also significantly overestimates the correct quantum mechanical golden rule rate for activationless electron transfer reactions. These results are analyzed and their implications discussed for the applicability of the iso-RP method to more general nonadiabatic reactions.

Adiabatic-Molecular Dynamics Generalized Vertical Hessian Approach: A Mixed Quantum Classical Method To Compute Electronic Spectra of Flexible Molecules in the Condensed Phase.

We present a general mixed quantum classical method that couples classical molecular dynamics (MD) and vibronic models to compute the shape of electronic spectra of flexible molecules in the condensed phase without, in principle, any phenomenological broadening. It is based on a partition of the nuclear motions of the solute + solvent system in "soft" and "stiff" vibrational modes and an adiabatic hypothesis that assumes that stiff modes are much faster than soft ones. In this framework, the spectrum is rigorously expressed as a conformational integral of quantum vibronic spectra along the stiff coordinates only. Soft modes enter at the classical level through the conformational distribution that is sampled with classical MD runs. In each configuration, reduced-dimensionality quadratic Hamiltonians are built in the space of the stiff coordinates only, thanks to a generalization of the Vertical Hessian harmonic model and an iterative application of projectors in internal coordinates to remove soft modes. Quantum vibronic spectra, specific for each sampled configuration of the soft coordinates, are then computed at the desired temperature with efficient time-dependent techniques, and the global spectrum simply arises from their average. For consistency of the whole procedure, classical MD runs are performed with quantum-mechanically derived force fields, parameterized at the same level of theory selected for generating the quadratic Hamiltonians along the stiff coordinates. Application to N-methyl-6-oxyquinolinium betaine in water, dithiophene in ethanol, and cyanidine in water is presented to show the performance of the method.

Numerical tests of coherence-corrected surface hopping methods using a donor-bridge-acceptor model system.

Surface hopping (SH) is a popular mixed quantum-classical method for modeling nonadiabatic excited state processes in molecules and condensed phase materials. The method is simple, efficient, and easy to implement, but the use of classical and independent nuclear trajectories introduces an overcoherence in the electronic density matrix which, if ignored, often leads to spurious results, such as overestimated reaction rates. Several methods have been proposed to incorporate decoherence into SH simulations, but a lack of insightful benchmarks makes their relative accuracy unknown. Herein, we run numerical simulations of common coherence-corrected SH methods including Truhlar's decay-of-mixing (DOM) and Subotnik's augmented SH using a Donor-bridge-Acceptor (DbA) model system. Numerical simulations are carried out in the superexchange regime, where charge transfer proceeds from a donor to an acceptor as a result of donor-bridge and bridge-acceptor couplings. The computed donor-to-acceptor reaction rates are compared to the reference Marcus theory results. For the DbA model under consideration, augmented SH recovers Marcus theory with quantitative accuracy, whereas DOM is only qualitatively accurate depending on whether predefined parameters in the decoherence rate are chosen wisely. We propose a general method for parameterizing the decoherence rate in the DOM method, which improves the method's reaction rates and presumably increases its transferability. Overall, the decoherence method of choice must be chosen with great care and this work provides insight using an exactly solvable model.

Mixed quantum-classical simulation of the hydride transfer reaction catalyzed by dihydrofolate reductase based on a mapped system-harmonic bath model.

The hydride transfer reaction catalyzed by dihydrofolate reductase is studied using a recently developed mixed quantum-classical method to investigate the nuclear quantum effects on the reaction. Molecular dynamics simulation is first performed based on a two-state empirical valence bond potential to map the atomistic model to an effective double-well potential coupled to a harmonic bath. In the mixed quantum-classical simulation, the hydride degree of freedom is quantized, and the effective harmonic oscillator modes are treated classically. It is shown that the hydride transfer reaction rate using the mapped effective double-well/harmonic-bath model is dominated by the contribution from the ground vibrational state. Further comparison with the adiabatic reaction rate constant based on the Kramers theory confirms that the reaction is primarily vibrationally adiabatic, which agrees well with the high transmission coefficients found in previous theoretical studies. The calculated kinetic isotope effect is also consistent with the experimental and recent theoretical results.
