Modeling and analysis of 3D mixed lubrication in marine cam–tappet pair

During the operation of the marine cam–tappet pair, affected by periodic dynamic load, transient velocity, and micromorphology, it usually operates in a mixed lubrication state. Under extreme operational conditions, contact is likely to occur at the asperity of the interface, leading to problems such as stress concentration and dry contact. Considering the transient dynamics and three-dimensional roughness of cam–tappet pair, a mixed-elastohydrodynamic lubrication model is developed in this article, while the effects of surface waviness on the lubrication state are also investigated. The results show that the film thickness can be increased by 0.098 μm, and the coefficient of friction can be reduced by 10.6% when the wavelength ratio ranges from 1/6 to 6. However, when the amplitude exceeds 0.6 μm, the coefficient of friction may reach 0.10. Under conditions of low speed and high load, the film thickness decreases and contact load ratio increases. And about 30% reduction in film thickness is achieved on cam–tappet pair, potentially leading to increased wear or scuffing failure.

Dynamic performances of novel misaligned non-uniform distributed tilting-pad bearing

The non-uniform distributed tilting-pad journal bearings (NDTPJB) in large wind turbine main shafting has become an important development trend for high-power wind turbines due to the advantages of improving reliability and reducing maintenance costs. However, studies involving NDTPJB have not been reported under specific conditions such as low speed, wide range variable direction and magnitude of heavy-load in wind turbine. A new transient mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (mixed EHL) model for NDTPJB is established, taking into account the misalignment effect of the shaft tilt and the swinging of pads in the circumferential and axial directions, as well as the influence of pivot friction and elastic deformation effects. Based on the mathematical model, the dynamic characteristics and structural parameter effects of NDTPJB are systematically studied under low speed, wide range variable direction and magnitude of heavy-load. The results indicate that the NDTPJB exhibits a more significant sensitivity to the heavy load direction due to the different functional roles of the above distributed pads (ADP) and bottom distributed pads (BDP). The modified mixed EHL model can more accurately evaluate the lubrication performance of NDTPJB, and combine the characteristics in individual pad swing and the overall effect of the pads to comprehensively analyze the dynamic lubrication behavior of NDTPJB. By setting the pivot coefficient to 0.55, reducing the distribution angle of BDP, and increasing the distribution angle of ADP, a better load-carrying capacity can be achieved. The research results have guiding significance for further monitoring and analyzing the experimental performance of NDTPJB, as well as designing and optimizing such bearing structures.

Numerical Point Contact Model of Mixed Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication for Transversely Isotropic Coating

Abstract Transverse isotropy, a typical property of coating providing protection or lubrication for transmission parts, is different from isotropy focused in most of previous research, catching increasing attention in recent years. This study aims to make the lubricating contact behavior of transversely isotropic coating under different working conditions better understood, with the assistance of a proposed mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model for a rigid ball in contact with transversely isotropic coating. Explicit analytical expressions of frequency response functions (FRFs) of the elastic field for transversely isotropic coating were derived, which could be used to work out surface/subsurface displacement and stress if surface pressure is known. The proposed EHL model for transversely isotropic coating was verified by comparing the film thickness and pressure distribution with those from literature by an uncoated model. Furthermore, the effects of coating elastic property, coating thickness, velocity, and load on lubrication performance and mechanical responses are investigated. In addition, the results under different coating parameters are also compared and discussed with those obtained by the Hamrock–Dowson equations to demonstrate the effectiveness of the latter. This investigation may provide a potential application for coating optimal design considering lubrication.

Study on mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication performance of point contact with non‐Gaussian rough surface

AbstractA numerical method is proposed to evaluate the effect of non‐Gaussian roughness on point contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL). A mixed EHL model of point contact, considering non‐Gaussian roughness, is developed. The oil film pressure in the model was controlled by the Reynolds equation of average flow, and the contact pressure of asperity was obtained by the rough surface micro‐contact model. The influence of non‐Gaussian roughness parameters on contact pressure distribution, film thickness profile and the ratio of asperity pressure to contact load (asperity load ratio) are investigated based on the mixed EHL model. The results show that the asperity pressure increases as root mean square (RMS) roughness increases, skewness and kurtosis. The film thickness also increases with RMS roughness and skewness, but is not sensitive to kurtosis.

Influence of Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) Shore Hardness and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Elastic Modulus on the Sealing Characteristics of Step Rod Seals

The influence of NBR Shore hardness and PTFE elastic modulus on the sealing characteristics of step rod seals is analyzed in this paper based on the developed mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model. The optimized selection studies of NBR Shore hardness and PTFE elastic modulus under different operating conditions are carried out based on the principle of minimizing net leakage and friction power loss. Results show that the Shore hardness of the NBR O-ring and, in particular, the elastic modulus of the PTFE ring has a significant effect on the sealing characteristics. Although the high values of these parameters result in high friction forces, they are beneficial for leakage control. To achieve both low leakage and low friction, it is recommended that high hardness and low modulus are selected for moderate-low pressure or high speed conditions, but low hardness and high modulus are selected for high pressure or low speed conditions.

Mathematical modeling for nonlinear dynamic mixed friction behaviors of novel coupled bearing lubricated with low-viscosity fluid

This paper aims to develop a mathematical model for investigating the nonlinear dynamic mixed friction behaviors, including hydrodynamic force, contact force, deformation, and displacements, of the novel coupled bearing lubricated with low-viscosity fluid. The model fully couples the five-degrees-of-freedom rotor dynamic model with the mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model of the novel coupled bearing, considering the unbalance and exciting forces/comments caused by the propeller rotor. A comparative analysis is carried out to validate the effectiveness of the present model. Through the numerical simulation, the dynamic nonlinear mixed friction behaviors of the novel coupled bearing under low-viscosity lubricant are revealed. Based on the established mathematical model, a series of parametric studies are conducted to explore the effect of the structural parameters on the nonlinear mixed friction behavior of the novel coupled bearing. Numerical results demonstrate that the exciting moments increase the range of the journal orbit, thereby generating the edge asperity contact for both the journal and thrust bearings. The angular displacement along the y axis improves the transient mixed friction performances of the thrust bearing. Furthermore, numerical results reveal that the increasing length–diameter ratio of the journal bearing (the specific pressure remains constant) improves the nonlinear dynamic mixed friction behaviors of the thrust bearing. In addition, the nonlinear dynamic mixed friction performance of the journal bearing becomes better with the increase in the thrust bearing radius.

Study on Surface Adhesive Wear and Wear Life of Double Involute Gears Under Mixed Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Abstract To slow down the surface wear process of double involute gears (DIG), the surface adhesive wear model and wear life prediction model are established according to its meshing characteristics, combined with the modified Archard wear model and mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model. This paper studies the surface wear and wear life of DIG, compares it with common involute gears (CIG), and discusses the influence of different factors on its surface wear. Results show that the adhesive wear distribution of DIG is similar to that of CIG. Properly reducing l* and increasing y* can reduce surface wear and prolong wear life. The reasonable selection of lubrication states and working conditions can be beneficial to enhance its tooth surface wear resistance.

Fractal simulation of surface topography and prediction of its lubrication characteristics

A machined surface has observable fractal characteristics, with infinite local and overall self-similar consistency. Therefore, the fractal theory is considered to provide a better description of the morphological characteristics of rough surfaces, which accurately reflects the randomness and multi-scale characteristics of rough surfaces and it is not comparable with the surface characteristics obtained based on statistical parameters limited by sampling length and device resolution. In this study, the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) function was applied to construct a fractal reconstruction surface, and the mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model was used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of real and reconstructed surfaces under the same fractal parameters. The effects of the fractal parameters on the fractal surface lubrication characteristics were further analyzed. The results demonstrate that the lateral roughness fractal surface provides greater resistance to the entrained flow of lubricant, which leads to a larger average film thickness, than the longitudinal roughness and isotropic fractal surface. With the increase in fractal dimension, the surface roughness peak density increases, which reduces the surface film thickness by 47%, and the friction coefficient increases by 46%. The lubrication parameter fluctuates slightly with the change in the number of overlapping ridges M of the fractal surface. Generally, M has little effect on the surface lubrication characteristics.

Study of the friction and wear of dimple textured surfaces based on mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication

In recent years, many study results have indicated that surface texture may have a positive effect on the improvement of the tribology properties of an interface. The novelty of this work is the study of the friction and wear of a line contact textured surface with consideration of the real surface topography and a discussion of the relationship between the roughness and the dimple depth. In this work, the mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model is employed to investigate the friction and wear of a line contact textured surface. In order to obtain the optimal texture form that is beneficial to improve the surface tribology performance, the friction coefficient and wear losses of different textured surfaces are compared. In addition, the influences of the dimple depth, roughness amplitude, and applied loads on the friction and wear of the interface are explored. The most important finding is that the textured surface has better tribology performance when the standard deviation of the surface roughness is close to the dimple depth.

Effect of micro-textures on lubrication characteristics of spur gears under 3D line-contact EHL model

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use a combination of numerical simulation and experiment to evaluate the performance of laser surface texturing (LST) in the field of gear lubrication, and to more accurately predict the lubrication characteristics of different surfaces. Design/methodology/approach The method used in this paper is developed on the basis of the deterministic solution of the three-dimensional (3D) mixed elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model and the model parameters are corrected by friction test. The film pressure, film thickness and friction coefficient of different micro-textured tooth surfaces are predicted on the basis of accurate 3D mixed EHL models. Findings The results demonstrate that the micro-texture structure of the tooth surface can increase the local film thickness and enhance the lubricating performance of the tooth surface without drastically reducing the contact fatigue life. The stress distribution and friction characteristics of the tooth surface can be optimized by adjusting the micro-texture arrangement and the size of the micro-textures. Originality/value A new evaluation method using a 3D hybrid EHL model and friction test to predict the lubrication characteristics of LST is proposed, which can effectively improve the processing economy and save time. Wear characterization under sliding–rolling contact using friction-induced vibration features

Skidding in rolling bearings often causes unexpected surface wear and early failures. Although vibration monitoring is widely used for bearing fault diagnosis, it is much less developed for wear analysis. This paper presents an investigation into characterizing the surface wear of a simplified sliding–rolling contact using friction-induced vibration features. The friction vibration mechanism under a rough sliding–rolling contact is explored by a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model. It is found that the friction coefficient has a positive correlation with the surface roughness, which indicates that the friction behaviour can be used to track the wear state under the sliding–rolling contact. Furthermore, the vibration excited by different rough surfaces is studied experimentally on a roller–ring test rig. The friction-induced vibration signal is extracted and a feature parameter ( K) is defined for quantitative wear characterization. Results show that the friction-induced vibration can well reflect the surface wear under the sliding–rolling contact. Compared with traditional time-domain parameters, the proposed parameter has a better linear relationship with the surface roughness.

A fatigue model for spiral bevel gears under mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication conditions

AbstractMany contributions have focused on the pitting analysis in gear transmissions. However, studies on pitting fatigue in spiral bevel gears are limited due to the complexity of tooth contact and lubrication analysis. This paper is to present a reasonable methodology to simulate the pitting crack nucleation of spiral bevel gears considering the real three‐dimensional (3D) rough surface contact where the intermittent asperity stress concentrations is prominent. The proposed model includes a loaded tooth contact analysis model, a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model proposed previously, 3D stress filed formulation, and multi‐axial fatigue criterions. In order to determine an appropriate multi‐axial fatigue criterion for spiral bevel gear, a characteristic plane approach and a conventional critical plane approach are employed in this study. The predicted micro‐pitting lives are compared to published micro‐pitting investigations to assess the reliability of two fatigue criterions in simulation of the micro‐pitting failure. It is observed that the characteristic plane approach is better to reveal the failure mechanism in spiral bevel gears.

Mixed EHL numerical analysis and leakage experiment of skeleton reciprocating oil seal

PurposeThis paper aims to present the mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model and obtain the leakage characteristics for the skeleton reciprocating oil seal.Design/methodology/approachThe model consists of a finite element analysis of the contact pressure, a fluid mechanics analysis of the fluid film, a contact analysis of the asperity contact pressure, a deformation analysis of the seal lip and an iterative numerical simulation process.FindingsSimulation results show that the leakage is in direct proportion to the seal roughness and speed, and in inverse proportion to the fluid viscosity. Comparisons with the experimental results verify the validity of the mixed EHL model.Originality/valueThis study provides a helpful method to calculate the leakage of the skeleton reciprocating oil seal, which shortens its development cycles.

Mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model of rotary lip seal with non-Gaussian surfaces: experimentation verification and numerical analysis on effects of sealed pressure.

Many published models can be used to analyse the sealing performance of rotary lip seal. The surfaces are normally assumed to be periodic variation. However, the quasi-randomness of surface height distribution should be considered, especially the non-Gaussian distribution. Hence, a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model with non-Gaussian surfaces is proposed and used to analyse the effects of sealed fluid pressure on the seal performance in this paper. Based on digital filter and Johnson's translator system, a rough surface simulation method is introduced to simulate non-Gaussian rough surface. Based on this method the mixed lubrication model with non-Gaussian surfaces is built. The proposed model is verified by comparing the simulation results to experimental observations. Furthermore, it is hardly to find the research focused on the effects of sealed pressure. Hence, the effects of sealed fluid pressure on the seal performance is focused.

Dynamics of lubricated spiral bevel gears under different contact paths

To assess the meshing quality of spiral bevel gears, the static meshing characteristics are usually checked under different contact paths to simulate the deviation in the footprint from the design point to the heel or toe of the gear flank caused by the assembly error of two gear axes. However, the effect of the contact path on gear dynamics under lubricated conditions has not been reported. In addition, most studies regarding spiral bevel gears disregard the lubricated condition because of the complicated solutions of mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL). Hence, an analytical friction model with a highly efficient solution, whose friction coefficient and film thickness predictions agree well with the results from a well-validated mixed EHL model for spiral bevel gears, is established in the present study to facilitate the study of the dynamics of lubricated spiral bevel gears. The obtained results reveal the significant effect of the contact path on the dynamic response and meshing efficiency of gear systems. Finally, a comparison of the numerical transmission efficiency under different contact paths with experimental measurements indicates good agreement.

Mixed lubrication of coated angular contact ball bearing considering dynamic characteristics

AbstractA mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model for a coated angular contact ball bearing is developed by coupling the influence coefficients with the unified deterministic mixed EHL model. Based on the bearing quasi‐dynamics analysis, the influences of the surface roughness, coating thickness, and boundary friction coefficient on the mixed EHL performance of the coated bearing are discussed. The results reveal that high surface root‐mean‐square roughness can be detrimental to bearing lubrication performance and increase the risk of coating failures. Coating thicknesses on the order of a few microns have a limited effect on the contact load ratio, film thickness ratio, and friction coefficient while having a significant effect on the maximum surface tensile stress and interfacial shear stress, especially for high‐friction low‐speed conditions. A low‐friction self‐lubricating coating can effectively improve the tribological performance and prolong the service life of the bearing, especially in the bad lubrication state with severe asperity contacts.

A Transient Mixed Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Model for Helical Gear Contacts

Abstract In this study, a non-Newtonian, transient, isothermal, mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model is proposed for helical gear contacts. The model accounts for nonelliptical contacts subject to spatially varying sliding and rolling velocity fields that are not aligned with any principal axis of the contact region, which is the case for helical gear contacts. The time-varying changes pertaining to key contact parameters and relative motion of roughness profiles on mating tooth surfaces are captured simultaneously to follow the contact from the root to the tip of a tooth while accounting for the transient effect due to relative motions of the roughness profiles. Actual tooth load distributions, contact kinematics, and compliances of helical gear contacts are provided to this model by an existing helical gear load distribution model. Measured three-dimensional roughness profiles covering the entire meshing zone are incorporated in the analyses to investigate its impact on the EHL conditions as well as mechanical power loss. Results of a parametric sensitivity study are presented to demonstrate the influence of operating conditions and surface roughness on the EHL behavior and the resultant gear mesh mechanical power loss of an example helical gear pair. The accuracy of the proposed mixed-EHL model is assessed by comparing the mechanical power loss predictions to available experimental results.

A mixed EHL model of grease lubrication considering surface roughness and the study of friction behavior

Grease lubrication is widely used in rolling element bearing because of its special rheological characteristics. Available studies are mainly based on experiments, while the relevant numerical studies of grease are quite limited. The purpose of this article is to establish a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model in point contact based on the rheological model of grease, which can calculate film thickness distribution applied to smooth and roughness surface. The obtained result is compared with that of it operated only in base oil. Besides, the impacts of load, surface roughness and rheological parameters on the grease film thickness have been investigated. In addition, the Stribeck curves of four greases covering different base oil viscosity and thickener types were measured on a ball-on-disc device, which can ensure that the contact area was in full film lubrication. From the study, it is concluded that the obtained grease friction behavior agrees well with the variation of grease film thickness calculated by the present mixed EHL model.

Wear law in mixed lubrication based on stress-promoted thermal activation

Although several empirical wear formulas have been proposed, theoretical approaches for predicting surface topography evolution during sliding wear are limited. In this study, we propose a novel wear-prediction method, wherein the energy-based Arrhenius equation is combined with a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model to predict the point-contact wear process in mixed lubrication. The surface flash temperature and contact pressure are considered in the wear model. Simulation results are compared with the experimental results to verify the theory. The surface topography evolutions are observed during the wear process. The influences of load and speed on wear are investigated. The simulation results based on the Arrhenius equation relationship shows good agreement with the results of experiments as well as the Archard wear formula. However, the Arrhenius equation is more accurate than the Archard wear theory in some aspects, such as under high-temperature conditions. The results indicate that combining the wear formulas with the mixed EHL simulation models is an effective method to study the wear behavior over time.

A Mixed Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication Model for Wear Calculation in Artificial Hip Joints

The aim of this paper was to propose a novel in silico mixed elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication model with the purpose of wear prediction in Total Hip Replacements (THRs). The model considers the progressive wear contribution in the calculation of the meatus filled by the non-Newtonian synovial fluid. The results were referred to the gait cycle kinematics, calculated by using musculoskeletal multibody software, while the loading was assumed by literature in vivo measurements. The simulations allow evaluating the fluid and the contact pressure fields and the acetabular cup wear over the time. The results were obtained considering a Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene, UHMWPE, cup and were compared with results from the literature, showing a good agreement in terms of total volume wear of the cup.
