DDoS SourceTracer: An Intelligent Application for DDoS Attack Mitigation in SDN

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enhances network management and efficiency and is particularly effective in defending against Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack through its centralized structure. Our proposed DDoS SourceTracer Application utilizes SDN to efficiently identify and mitigate DDoS attack by employing tracebacking and clustering techniques. This application uses supervised and ensemble machine learning algorithms for attack detection, and feature selection methods like the Chi-square test, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) F-test, Correlation matrix, and Extra tree classifier to optimize the feature set. Our results show that the clustering approach outperforms traditional methods like rate limiting and blocking and effectively mitigates the attack in just 3.5 s. We used the sFlow-RT tool on the Zoo topology to perform real-time analysis and validate our application’s effectiveness during attack and normal traffic. This tool analyzes how attack traffic is impacted when using clustering and tracebacking methods to mitigate DDoS attack.

Intrusion Detection System

Our project introduces an Integrated Intrusion Detection System (IDS) designed to bolster network and system security through a multi-faceted approach. This comprehensive IDS seamlessly combined Machine Learning, Anomaly Detection, File Scanning, and DDoS Prevention mechanisms to offer robust defense against diverse cyber threats. At the heart of the system lies the Machine Learning component, which continuously adapts to the evolving threat landscape. By analyzing network traffic and system behavior, it identifies both known and emerging threats in real-time, reducing reliance on traditional signature-based detection methods and allowing organizations to proactively stay ahead of cybercriminals. Anomaly Detection constantly monitors network and system activity, comparing it against established baselines. Any deviations from these baselines trigger alerts, facilitating swift responses to unusual activities that may indicate security breaches. File Scanning is another vital component ensuring data integrity and preventing malware infiltration or data exfiltration. It conducts thorough file analysis, checking for suspicious code, behavior, or unauthorized access, and offers continuous monitoring to detect anomalies in real-time. Additionally, our IDS includes Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Prevention mechanisms. By detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks, the system ensures the continuous availability of network resources and services even under intense traffic loads. This integrated approach to intrusion detection and prevention leverages Machine Learning, Honeypots, Anomaly Detection, File Scanning, and DDoS Prevention, empowering organizations to safeguard critical assets, maintain data integrity, and ensure network security in today's dynamic and perilous digital landscape. Our IDS solution serves as a valuable addition to the cybersecurity toolkit for organizations seeking comprehensive security against a wide range of threats.

Countering DDoS threats: leveraging ensemble methods for detection and mitigation

Cloud computing is the modern concept of distributing numerous services through the Internet, such as web applications, databases, and programmers that operate on several servers. As Cloud computing technologies evolve, increasing susceptibility to attack may result from service outages during data storage and transmission. The most common sort of assault against Cloud settings is distributed denial-of-service (DDoS). Several approaches for detecting and mitigating these attacks have been offered, however they are ineffective. In this research, we propose a method for detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks in their early phases, considering top-layer advances at the application layer and the TCP handshake mechanism. This study employs a variety of ensemble-based machine learning approaches to classify incoming data as legitimate or malicious to respond to DDoS attacks at the application layer. Furthermore, the double TCP connection concept is used to prevent DDoS. Experiments show that the stacked voting system detects DDOS attacks with the best F-score of 99.9%.

Enhancing Multi-Class DDoS Attack Classification using Machine Learning Techniques

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which adversely impact network availability, confidentiality, and integrity, represent a persistent threat. These attacks involve affected systems consuming resources through spurious requests instead of serving legitimate clients. Various methodologies exist for detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks, with Machine Learning (ML) emerging as a particularly effective approach due to its predictive capabilities after training on pertinent data. The primary objective of this study is to identify an improved ML algorithm for the detection of multiple DDoS types, considering metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and training time. Leveraging WEKA tools and the CICDDoS2019 dataset, several machine-learning algorithms, including Multilayer Perceptron, Reduced Error Pruning (REP) Tree, Partial Decision Tree (PART), RandomForest, and J48, were trained and evaluated. Among these, J48 was determined to be the superior algorithm for classifying four DDoS types (UDP, SYN, Portmap, MSSQL), based on the aforementioned criteria. The algorithms were experimented with using diverse sets of features, and optimal results were obtained using six features, resulting in an overall accuracy of 99.97%. Subsequently, the selected algorithm was integrated into a real-time model, exhibiting exceptional performance, which will be thoroughly elucidated and discussed in a forthcoming paper.

Advanced machine learning approach for DoS attack resilience in internet of vehicles security

Recent years have witnessed security as a great concern in vehicular networks (VANET). Particularly, Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks can jeopardize the network by broadcasting a storm of packets. Correspondingly, the network resources are jammed with malicious traffic. In this connection, the existing research presented various techniques to cope with DoS and DDoS attacks. Different from those traditional approaches, this study proposes an Intelligent Intrusion Detection System (IDS) by leveraging Machine Learning (ML). The proposed IDS utilizes a publicly available dataset on the application layer for mitigating DDoS attacks. The designed ML-based IDS relies on combining both the Random Projection (RP) and Randomized Matrix Factorization (RMF) methods to achieve the best results for enhancing the detection capabilities of the IDS. This amalgamation enhances the system's detection capabilities by extracting and analyzing meaningful features from network traffic data. Experimental validation of our approach involves a comprehensive evaluation of various ML models, including Extra Tree Classifier (ETC), Logistic Regression (LR), and Random Forest (RF). Remarkably, the combined accuracy of these models yields an average system accuracy of 0.98, surpassing existing methods. Unlike conventional approaches, our proposed IDS excels in efficiency and exhibits notable performance in detecting DoS and DDoS attacks in VANET. This proficiency ensures the integrity and safety of vehicle communications. Thus, our research substantially contributes to the vehicular network security field. The presented findings establish a foundation for future advancements in securing connected vehicles.

Energy efficiency in 5G systems: A systematic literature review

To ensure Energy Efficiency (EE) and better Quality of service (QoS), it is necessary to analyze the energy saving possibilities for low resource utilization in the current networks caused by rigorous QoS requirements and implementing EE approach in the planned model for performance improvement. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks aim to exhaust the network’s processing and communication capacity by saturating it with packets and generating malicious traffic. There are numerous advantages that make Digital Twin (DT) and Intrusion Detection technique (ID) an effective remedy for a range of (fifth generation) 5G problems. A DDoS attack must be immediately detected and stopped before a legitimate user can access the target of the attacker for the 5G network to provide an efficient energy service. Although they clearly show promise in assisting with the creation and implementation of the challenging 5G environment, Digital Twins is still a relatively new technology for 5G networks but will increase EE. In this research, a thorough examination of the materials was carried out to identify the most cutting-edge DT and ID methods. The purpose of this study was to comprehend the problems with Energy Efficiency, the need for DT, and the methods for dealing with large-scale attack by DDoS on Energy Efficient networks. Only 94 of the 1555 articles produced by the procedure were determined to be relevant using inclusion and exclusion criteria. The outcome demonstrates that in 5G networks, DT, and its fundamental approaches, like QoS and DDoS attack mitigation, can be used to regulate the network’s Energy Efficiency. Numerous practical applications focusing on 5G Systems use their own principles. The effectiveness of these strategies was evaluated using several assessment criteria, including DT, Intrusion Detection, QoS, Energy Efficiency, and 5G Systems. Each study issue is thoroughly explained, along with typical methods, advantages, disadvantages, and performance metrics. Energy economy, network reliability, privacy, and cost reduction are all considerably increased by the implementation of intrusion detection technology in 5G systems. The decision is supported by the technology’s demonstrated efficacy, scalability, real-time detection capacities, low error level, and personalized learning attributes, all of which contribute to the long-term viability of 5G networks as an entire system.

A Comparative Review on DDoS Attack Detection Using Machine Learning Techniques

The rapid growth of the internet and the increasing reliance on digital infrastructures have posed significant challenges to cybersecurity. Among the other variants of attacks, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have emerged as one of the most destructive and common threats. These attacks disrupt or slow down network services by overwhelming the network infrastructure with a massive volume of malicious traffic. To effectively identify and mitigate DDoS attacks, machine learning techniques have been extensively employed in intrusion detection systems. Machine learning approaches offer the advantage of automating the detection process by learning patterns and characteristics of DDoS attacks from historical data. Researchers have explored various machine learning algorithms such as K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Naïve Bayes to classify and detect DDoS attacks. These algorithms leverage features extracted from network traffic data, including packet size, packet delay patterns, and traffic behaviour, to differentiate between normal and malicious traffic.

Toward a Real-Time TCP SYN Flood DDoS Mitigation Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Classifier and SDN Assistance in Fog Computing

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has recently impacted our daily lives in many ways. As a result, a massive volume of data are generated and need to be processed in a short period of time. Therefore, a combination of computing models such as cloud computing is necessary. The main disadvantage of the cloud platform is its high latency due to the centralized mainframe. Fortunately, a distributed paradigm known as fog computing has emerged to overcome this problem, offering cloud services with low latency and high-access bandwidth to support many IoT application scenarios. However, attacks against fog servers can take many forms, such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks that severely affect the reliability and availability of fog services. To address these challenges, we propose mitigation of fog computing-based SYN Flood DDoS attacks using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and software defined networking (SDN) assistance (FASA). The simulation results show that the FASA system outperforms other algorithms in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. This shows how crucial our system is for detecting and mitigating TCP-SYN floods and DDoS attacks.

A Repeated Game-Based Distributed Denial of Service Attacks Mitigation Method for Mining Pools

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is a prevalent issue in the blockchain network layer, causing significant revenue loss for honest mining pools. This paper introduces a novel method, the Repeated Game-based DDoS attack mitigation (RGD), to address this problem. Unlike traditional methods such as game theory and machine learning-based detection, the RGD method can effectively reflect the changes in mining revenue and strategies under different network-strength environments. In particular, we abstract the problem of DDoS mining pool revenue loss into a game revenue model and propose the subgame perfect equilibrium (SPE) approach to solve the optimal payoffs and pool strategies in various network environments. Furthermore, we address the returns of mining pools in an infinitely repeated game environment using the Two-Stage Repeated Game (TSRG) method, where the strategy varies with different network environments. The Matlab experimental simulation results indicate that as the network environment improves, the optimal mining strategies of mining pools are gradually shifting from honest strategies to launching DDoS attacks against each other. The RGD method can effectively represent the impact of changes in the network environment on the mining pool’s strategy selection and optimal revenue. Consequently, with the changing network environment, the optimal revenue of the mining pool only increases by 10% of the revenue loss during a DDoS attack.

Cyber-Secure SDN: A CNN-Based Approach for Efficient Detection and Mitigation of DDoS attacks

Software Defined Networking (SDN) has become popular due to its flexibility and agility in network management, enabling rapid adaptation to changing business requirements, enhancing network performance, and reducing operational costs. However, the ubiquity of internet-based services has given rise to an alarming increase in cyber-attacks, posing serious threats to the security and stability of modern networks. Among these attacks, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have emerged as one of the most devastating, capable of disrupting critical services. Recent studies have shown that Deep Learning (DL) techniques with Software-defined networking have the potential to mitigate these threats effectively. However, existing solutions suffer from issues such as reliance on pre-defined rules and signatures, computational efficiency, low detection rates, and inefficient notification mechanisms, making them ineffective in detecting DDoS attacks. This paper proposes an efficient approach (BRS + CNN) using Balanced Random Sampling (BRS) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to detect DDoS attacks in SDN environments. We have applied various mitigation techniques to mitigate these threats, such as filtering, rate limiting, and iptables rule for blocking spoofed IPs. In addition, we introduce a monitoring system that utilizes rate-limiting to oversee blocked IP addresses, ensuring that legitimate traffic is processed efficiently. The proposed model achieves high performance in binary and multi-classification, with an accuracy of over 99.99% for binary classification and 98.64% for multi-classification. Our proposed DDoS detection system not only detects the attack but also sends detailed contextual information to a designated email address. We compare our model with existing literature and demonstrate its superiority using Area Under The Curve (AUC) analysis. Moreover, we evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed DDoS mitigation system by conducting a series of experiments across three distinct scenarios: Attack-Free, Attack-No Mitigation, and Attack-Mitigation. These results demonstrate the robustness of our proposed mitigation system in effectively combating DDoS attacks while also safeguarding the seamless continuity of regular network operations.

Securing Mobile Edge Computing Using Hybrid Deep Learning Method

In recent years, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has revolutionized the landscape of the telecommunication industry by offering low-latency, high-bandwidth, and real-time processing. With this advancement comes a broad range of security challenges, the most prominent of which is Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which threaten the availability and performance of MEC’s services. In most cases, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), a security tool that monitors networks and systems for suspicious activity and notify administrators in real time of potential cyber threats, have relied on shallow Machine Learning (ML) models that are limited in their abilities to identify and mitigate DDoS attacks. This article highlights the drawbacks of current IDS solutions, primarily their reliance on shallow ML techniques, and proposes a novel hybrid Autoencoder–Multi-Layer Perceptron (AE–MLP) model for intrusion detection as a solution against DDoS attacks in the MEC environment. The proposed hybrid AE–MLP model leverages autoencoders’ feature extraction capabilities to capture intricate patterns and anomalies within network traffic data. This extracted knowledge is then fed into a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) network, enabling deep learning techniques to further analyze and classify potential threats. By integrating both AE and MLP, the hybrid model achieves higher accuracy and robustness in identifying DDoS attacks while minimizing false positives. As a result of extensive experiments using the recently released NF-UQ-NIDS-V2 dataset, which contains a wide range of DDoS attacks, our results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid AE–MLP model achieves a high accuracy of 99.98%. Based on the results, the hybrid approach performs better than several similar techniques.

Mitigating DDoS attacks in cloud computing using machine learning algorithms

Machine learning models, such as supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms, are trained on network traffic data to identify patterns indicative of DDoS activity. The proposed system adapts to evolving attack strategies and is capable of real-time analysis, ensuring swift responses to emerging threats.

Mitigating DDoS attacks with an intrusion detection and prevention system based on 2-player Bayesian game theory

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are very dangerous to the availability and security of networks, so they need improved ways to be stopped. This article suggests a new way to fight DDoS attacks that uses Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) and 2-Player Bayesian Game Theory. Traditional IDPSs often have trouble responding quickly to changing attack tactics, which makes them less effective as defenses. The suggested structure, on the other hand, imagines the attacker and defense interacting as a Bayesian game. This lets them make proactive choices and come up with flexible ways to respond.The system uses Bayesian reasoning to describe the attacker’s actions and plans’ doubt, which lets it better assess the threat and decide how to respond. By constantly changing probability distributions based on what it sees attackers doing and what it sees defenders doing, the IDPS can quickly and effectively change its defenses to deal with new threats. The strategy contact between the attacker and the defense adds a competition factor that makes attackers less likely to start DDoS attacks by making them more expensive and risky. The proposed method works to stop different kinds of DDoS attacks while reducing the number of fake positives and negatives through a lot of simulations and experiments.

Enhancing Wireless Ad-Hoc Network Security by Mitigating Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) Attacks

The increasing threat landscape of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks makes network security a major concern. These attacks are a serious challenge to the stability and integrity of digital infrastructures. This research paper is an in-depth study on how to enhance network security through the detection and mitigation of DDoS attacks. The study reviews existing literature on DDoS attack mitigation strategies, emphasizing the evolving nature of these threats and the imperative for robust defense mechanisms. The research uses statistical analysis and logistic regression to provide a detailed methodology for distinguishing DDoS attacks from normal network activities. The results show that logistic regression is an effective classification model, providing insights into improved detection measures. Finally, the study concludes by recommending a multi-faceted approach that combines theoretical insights with empirical validation, highlighting the need for stronger network security measures against DDoS attacks and enhancing digital resilience.

Visualization with Prediction Scheme for Early DDoS Detection in Ethereum.

Blockchain technologies have gained widespread use in security-sensitive applications due to their robust data protection. However, as blockchains are increasingly integrated into critical data management systems, they have become attractive targets for attackers. Among the various attacks on blockchain systems, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are one of the most significant and potentially devastating. These attacks render the systems incapable of processing transactions, causing the blockchain to come to a halt. To address the challenge of detecting DDoS attacks on blockchains, existing visualization schemes have been developed. However, these schemes often fail to provide early DDoS detection since they typically display only past and current system status. In this paper, we present a novel visualization scheme that not only portrays past and current values but also forecasts future expected system statuses. We achieve these future predictions by utilizing polynomial regression with blockchain data. Additionally, we offer an alternative DDoS detection method employing statistical analysis, specifically the coefficient of determination, to enhance accuracy. Through our experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed scheme excels at predicting future blockchain statuses and anticipating DDoS attacks with minimal error. Our work empowers system managers of blockchain-based applications to identify and mitigate DDoS attacks at an earlier stage.

Enhancing DDoS Attack Detection Using Machine Learning: A Framework with Feature Selection and Comparative Analysis of Algorithms

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are an ever-present threat to network security and can make online services hard for users to access. Conventional detection methods often struggle to effectively counter new and sophisticated DDoS attacks. This research article aims to assess the effectiveness of several machine learning methods in detecting distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. The evaluation is conducted using the DDOS attack SDN dataset, which is sourced from Google's research dataset. Various algorithms, including Random Forest, Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, and Support Vector Machine (SVM), are used for the purpose of analyzing network traffic data and detecting abnormal patterns that may indicate DDoS attacks. Results indicate that the Random Forest algorithm achieves the highest accuracy rate of 99.4% in detecting DDoS attacks. Additionally, the Decision Tree and SVM algorithms perform admirably, achieving accuracy rates of 98.8% and 98.4%, respectively. This research underscores the potential of machine learning algorithms in detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks. It emphasizes the necessity of employing advanced techniques for robust cyber threat defense and offers valuable insights into the performance of different machine learning algorithms in the context of DDoS attack detection.

Detecting and Preventing of DDoS Attack in Cloud Computing Environment Based on Hybrid Technique (Cloudflare and WAF)

The adoption of cloud computing has revolutionized data storage and processing globally. Nevertheless, the need for a close watch on security is paramount. Hence, the aim of this paper, to develop a cloud security model that detects and prevents the risks of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in cloud computing systems which are gravely potent and, on the increase, today. This was done using two approaches: analyzing Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) header features of incoming packets in cloud computing environment in order to detect and classify spoofed IP address during DDoS attack via a custom-made Web Application Firewall (WAF); and the integration of the cloud resources with Cloudflare. The result shows that a total of 1,625,192 packets were transmitted in a short period which were captured and analyzed via Wireshark. Several TCP errors were observed over a very short time interval which indicated successful DDoS attack effectively crashing the system. The result varied when the custom-made WAF was put in place, and the attacking lab machine launched a TCP syn flood attack against the web server on port http port 80. A total of 2,353,585 packets were transmitted in a short period which were captured and analyzed using Wireshark and contained less TCP errors indicating successful mitigation of DDoS attacks. When the resources were hosted online and integrated with Cloudflare, integrity checks were successful before the resources were loaded, indicating complete mitigation of attacks. Implementing a Machine Learning based Hybrid Model to Counter Attacks in Mobile Edge Computing

This study focuses on the security of 5G mobile network major technology called Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) and its susceptibility to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. The goal of the research is to address the effects of DDoS attacks and implement effective mitigation techniques. Several supervised Machine Learning (ML) techniques, which include Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree, Naïve Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbour, Logistics Regression, and Blending/Stack Model, are evaluated using multiple performance metrics such as accuracy, detection/recall, F1-Measure, Matthew’s correlation coefficient, Receiver Operating Characteristic, and Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristic. According to literature, ML algorithms achieve the best performance in mitigating DDoS attacks, therefore, they can be optimized to enhance their effectiveness. The research provides an overview of the existing mitigation schemes in the MEC and proposes a DDoS mitigation scheme. The findings show that hybrid models outperformed traditional ML models. Among the mitigation techniques evaluated, RF proved to be the most effective in mitigating DDoS attacks in MEC.

DDoS Mitigation by Blockchain With Approach of Cost Model

Computer networks and internet services are increasingly threatened by attacks like Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS). DDoS attack mitigation techniques now in use are ineffective due to a lack of resources and a lack of adaptability. Using blockchains like Ethereum, DDoS attacks can be thwarted in innovative ways. With smart contracts, it is possible to track down the IP addresses of attackers without additional hardware. This study examines blockchain-based solutions to combat DDoS attacks for feasibility, effectiveness, as well as cost and performance. The cost model delves into economic aspects like gas, gas price, and Ether value. In it, the evaluation of various smart contracts for the signalization of DDoS attacks is documented and compared to assess three system variants, analyzing gas costs, deployment, speed, and accuracy. It also details Ethereum's ecosystem and how that affects smart contract design and it also acknowledges scalability challenges and suggests outsourcing data for a more scalable solution, advocating for specialized blockchains for DDoS signaling applications. The analysis provides insights into the gas costs associated with different variants, considering various scenarios and highlighting the trade-offs and efficiencies of each approach.

Security and risk analysis in the cloud with software defined networking architecture

Cloud computing has emerged as the actual trend in business information technology service models, since it provides processing that is both cost-effective and scalable. Enterprise networks are adopting software-defined networking (SDN) for network management flexibility and lower operating costs. Information technology (IT) services for enterprises tend to use both technologies. Yet, the effects of cloud computing and software defined networking on business network security are unclear. This study addresses this crucial issue. In a business network that uses both technologies, we start by looking at security, namely distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack defensive methods. SDN technology may help organizations protect against DDoS assaults provided the defensive architecture is structured appropriately. To mitigate DDoS attacks, we offer a highly configurable network monitoring and flexible control framework. We present a dataset shift-resistant graphic model-based attack detection system for the new architecture. The simulation findings demonstrate that our architecture can efficiently meet the security concerns of the new network paradigm and that our attack detection system can report numerous threats using real-world network data.
