Unexpected Global Structure of Quasi‐4‐Day Wave With Westward Zonal Wavenumber 2 During the February 2023 Unusual Major Sudden Stratospheric Warming With Elevated Stratopause

AbstractDuring February 2023, the quasi‐4‐day wave (Q4DW) with westward zonal wavenumber 2 (W2) reached its largest amplitude of ∼400 m in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) geopotential height observations since 2004, which occurred simultaneously with an Arctic major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) with an elevated stratopause (ES). However, the Q4DW‐W2 perturbations in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) were unexpectedly suppressed despite the unstable Arctic stratosphere and mesosphere during the 2023 ES‐SSW. Diagnostic analysis shows that the westward winds at ∼54°N–70°N in the upper stratosphere of ∼‐79 m/s during the 2023 ES‐SSW were the strongest during boreal winters over the past two decades, which benefited from the onset of a preceding minor SSW at the end of January. The strongest westward wind generated a wave geometry configuration of full reflection for Q4DW‐W2 in the NH, while the Q4DW‐W2 enhancement in the SH was induced by the in‐situ amplification of the surviving seeding perturbations.

Large-scale dynamic processes during the minor and major sudden stratospheric warming events in January–February 2023

Using data from reanalyses of meteorological information, this study examines peculiarities of the thermodynamic regime of the Arctic stratosphere in the winter season of 2022–2023. For this purpose, components of the global meridional circulation, wave activity fluxes, volume of polar stratospheric clouds type I (PSC NAT) are analyzed, as well as changes in these indicators during sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events formed in January–February. The main features of the 2022–2023 winter season were the following: (1) a persistent cold stratospheric polar vortex was observed until mid-January, which caused the PSC NAT volume growth to its maximum values since 1980; (2) enhanced wave activity from mid-January led to the formation of a minor SSW at the end of January, an increase in the temperature of the lower stratosphere and a sharp reduction in PSC NAT; (3) a week of intensification of the polar vortex was then observed, followed by a weakening due to the next burst of wave activity propagation during the second SSW event in mid-February. This second SSW event was major, accompanied by a reversal of the mean zonal wind, which lasted until early March; (4) meridional heat flux in January–February 2023 was the highest since 1948, resulting in unprecedented warming of the lower Arctic stratosphere and preventing ozone depletion in March; (5) the minor SSW at the end of January was accompanied by a more intense change in the meridional circulation than the major SSW in mid-February. Formation of ozone mini-hole over Northern and Central Europe in February 2023 was associated with the strengthening of the anticyclone, leading to a stratopause elevation and northward transport of ozone-poor air masses from the subtropics along the western periphery of the anticyclone additionally to related to the major SSW temperature changes affected the ozone concentration in the lower stratosphere.

Analysis of Planetary Scale Waves Using Idealized Sudden Stratospheric Warming Simulations in Different Dynamical Cores

AbstractPlanetary waves from the troposphere are known to play an important role in sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). To evaluate the representation of large‐scale waves in idealized SSW simulations, three dynamical cores of the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Atmosphere Model were tested in this study: the Eulerian (EUL) spectral‐transform, finite‐volume (FV), and spectral element (SE) models. Notable differences were observed among the dynamical cores, with FV being unable to generate major SSWs and simulating minor SSWs less effectively than the other models. Wave decomposition analysis revealed distinct planetary wave propagation patterns during the development of each event. Zonal Wave Number 2 wave activities primarily determined SSW types, and ZWN1 led SSWs to recovery during the ensuing periods. However, FV failed to adequately propagate large‐scale waves in minor SSW events, preventing the reversal of stratospheric zonal‐mean zonal winds. Interestingly, FV showed decreased upward Eliassen–Palm flux compared to that of other dynamical cores, even during climatology. Additional tests were performed to examine the reasons for FV's atypical results, but the dynamic impacts on planetary waves remain poorly understood.

Impact of sudden stratospheric warming on middle atmospheric circulation in the southern hemisphere: A comparative study

A comparative study on the impact of rare Southern Hemisphere (SH) Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSW) on the middle atmospheric circulation is investigated using a global reanalysis dataset. Since the SH SSW generally occur around spring equinox marking the seasonal transition, so an attempt has been made to isolate the seasonal transition effect from the actual data by carrying out deseasoning to delineate the effects mainly due to the warming. The deseasoned winds are able to extract relatively weak dynamical signatures of SSW at lower altitudes in terms of prominent zonal mean easterly forcing around the peak warming day (PWD) which are not evident from the actual winds. The influence of 2002 SSW seems to reach the troposphere in terms of easterly deseasoned forcing, which is not the case in 2019. Also the deseasoned winds in the stratosphere reveals earlier occurrence of easterly forcing in the extratropical latitudes, which progresses poleward around the PWD indicating a possible tropical precursor to the SH SSW. In general, the actual upper mesospheric wind is dominated by seasonal transition but the deseasoned winds reveal easterly and southerly forcing due to the SSW. Interestingly, the horizontal flow is found to be very different or even opposite in direction at different longitudes indicating uneven longitudinal response of the atmosphere to the warming events across the globe. Overall, the present study provides a detailed and comparative overview of the middle atmospheric circulation in terms of zonal mean flow and concomitant zonal variability during two rare major and minor SSW events in the SH.

Conjugate hemispheric response of Earth’s ionosphere due to 2019 Antarctic minor Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW): Comparison with 2013 Arctic major SSW

In this paper, we attempt to compare the Antarctic SSW of 2019 with the Arctic SSW of 2013. Despite being a minor SSW, the rare Antarctic event of September 2019 caused a significant enhancement of stratospheric temperature at high latitudes with more temperature deviation than the Arctic major SSW of 2013. On the basis of the duration and extent of stratospheric zonal mean zonal wind, the 2019 SSW is comparable to major SSWs. An exceptionally strong wave 1 planetary wave was observed during the 2019 SSW. We have investigated the response of the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) during both the SSWs over two low mid-latitude locations Okinawa and Darwin, which form magnetic conjugate pair. The extent of maximum ionospheric deviations during the 2019 SSW is almost comparable to the 2013 SSW in their respective hemispheres. We have observed mostly night time enhancement in TEC during the Arctic SSW, while daytime enhancement is noted during the Antarctic SSW. Hemispheric asymmetry is observed during both the SSWs. Minor geomagnetic storm has been noticed coinciding with each SSW during different phases of the warming. The SSW, solar flux, and storm contribution on the TEC have been calculated during both the SSWs, which shows clear contribution of SSW on the total TEC despite the presence of storm and during moderately high solar activity. We have also investigated the foF2 variations from ionosonde and IRI-16 at the same two locations. The peak electron density from ionosonde responds to the warming in a manner similar to TEC. The foF2 of IRI-16 exhibits overestimation during daytime and underestimation during nighttime on quiet days during low solar activity (2019), while during moderate solar activity (2013), it overestimates during morning hours. However, it can not predict the enhancements of foF2 during SSWs.

Antarctic polar vortex dynamics in 2019 and 2020 under the influence of the subtropical stratosphere

The trend of strengthening of the Antarctic polar vortex in late spring and early summer (November–December) has been observed in recent decades. A good example of this trend is the dynamics of the Antarctic polar vortex in 2020 when it existed until the last week of December. In 2019, conversely, on the contrary, an unusually early breakup of the polar vortex occurred, a minor sudden stratospheric warming was recorded. Strengthening (or weakening) of the Antarctic polar vortex occurs as a result of an increase (or decrease) in the stratospheric meridional temperature gradient under conditions of growth (or decline) in the temperature of the lower subtropical stratosphere. We considered the temperature variations in the lower subtropical stratosphere in the spring of 2019 and 2020 and the corresponding response of the Antarctic polar vortex. The dynamics of the Antarctic polar vortex in September–October 2019 and November 2020 was largely synchronized with the temperature changes in the lower subtropical stratosphere relative to climatological means. Using correlation analysis, we show that the Antarctic polar vortex dynamics in December is largely due to the temperature changes in the lower subtropical stratosphere that occurred in the second half of November, which manifested itself in 2020.

Microwave radiometer observations of the ozone diurnal cycle and its short-term variability over Switzerland

Abstract. In Switzerland, two ground-based ozone microwave radiometers are operated in the vicinity of each other (ca. 40 km): the GROund-based Millimeter-wave Ozone Spectrometer (GROMOS) in Bern (Institute of Applied Physics) and the Stratospheric Ozone MOnitoring RAdiometer (SOMORA) in Payerne (MeteoSwiss). Recently, their calibration and retrieval algorithms have been fully harmonized, and updated time series are now available since 2009. Using these harmonized ozone time series, we investigate and cross-validate the strato–mesospheric ozone diurnal cycle derived from the two instruments and compare it with various model-based datasets: the dedicated GEOS-GMI Diurnal Ozone Climatology (GDOC) based on the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS-5) general circulation model, the Belgian Assimilation System for Chemical ObsErvations (BASCOE) – a chemical transport model driven by ERA5 dynamics, and a set of free-running simulations from the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM). Overall, the two instruments show very similar ozone diurnal cycles at all seasons and pressure levels, and the models compare well with each other. There is a good agreement between the models and the measurements at most seasons and pressure levels, and the largest discrepancies can be explained by the limited vertical resolution of the microwave radiometers. However, as in a similar study over Mauna Loa, some discrepancies remain near the stratopause, at the transition region between ozone daytime accumulation and depletion. We report similar delays in the onset of the modelled ozone diurnal depletion in the lower mesosphere. Using the newly harmonized time series of GROMOS and SOMORA radiometers, we present the first observations of short-term (sub-monthly) ozone diurnal cycle variability at mid-latitudes. The short-term variability is observed in the upper stratosphere during wintertime, when the mean monthly cycle has a small amplitude and when the dynamics are more important. This is shown in the form of strong enhancements of the diurnal cycle, reaching up to 4–5 times the amplitude of the mean monthly cycle. We show that BASCOE is able to capture some of these events, and we present a case study of one such event following the minor sudden stratospheric warming of January 2015. Our analysis of this event supports the conclusions of a previous modelling study, attributing regional variability of the ozone diurnal cycle to regional anomalies in nitrogen oxide (NOx) concentrations. However, we also find periods with an enhanced diurnal cycle that do not show much change in NOx and where other processes might be dominant (e.g. atmospheric tides). Given its importance, we believe that the short-term variability of the ozone diurnal cycle should be further investigated over the globe, for instance using the BASCOE model.

Whether Sudden Stratospheric Warming Effects Are Seen in the Midlatitude Thermosphere of the Opposite Hemisphere?

AbstractThe reaction of midlatitude daytime foF2 and thermospheric parameters in two Hemispheres has been analyzed for a minor Arctic Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) in January 2008, three major Arctic SSWs in January 2006, 2009, 2013, and a minor Antarctic SSW in September 2019. Arctic SSWs always result in a simultaneous foF2 depression observed at some stations in the Northern Hemisphere but not necessary in the opposite Hemisphere, that is, not all SSWs have global appearance. Thermospheric parameters retrieved from ionospheric observations in two Hemispheres manifest a dependence on the type of SSW (major/minor) and its magnitude. Pronounced thermospheric SSW effects in the opposite (Southern) Hemisphere may be expected only for strong major Arctic SSW events. Retrieved exospheric temperature does not manifest any visible reaction to SSWs both for major and minor SSW events. The duration of foF2 and atomic oxygen decrease related to SSW is 3–5 days in the vicinity of the SSW peak. Both observed neutral gas density and retrieved thermospheric parameters do not manifest a significant difference comparing western and eastern regions of North America during the minor Antarctic SSW in September 2019. Therefore, the previously reported (80–100%) increase in TEC in the western region of North America was not related with variations of neutral composition and winds.

Effects of Energetic Particle Precipitation on Stratospheric Temperature During Disturbed Stratospheric Polar Vortex Conditions

AbstractRecently, observational and re‐analysis studies have outlined potentially enhanced influence of Energetic Particle Precipitation (EPP) either at times preceding Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSW) or when the distribution of planetary wave activity is suitable. In addition, significant correlations have been found between EPP and the occurrence rate of SSWs when the phases of the Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation (QBO) are taken into account. Here we study the influence of EPP during disturbed stratospheric polar vortex conditions using chemistry‐climate model SOCOL‐MPIOM3 over the 20th century. When classifying disturbed conditions, the definition of minor SSWs are utilized along with a temperature gradient (day‐to‐day variations) criteria at 90°N and 10 hPa acting as a measure of the strength of the events. We find no influence of EPP on the occurrence rate of disturbed conditions over the last 100 year period. However, conditions preceding and during the disturbances are significantly different when EPP forcing is included into the model. This is especially true for stratospheric disturbances occurring in February. Furthermore, there is a clear tendency that the EPP effect becomes more notable after the 1950s. Our results imply that EPP forcing could be important for the stratospheric conditions during winter and that pre‐conditioning forced by atmospheric disturbances are an important factor when considering how the mechanism operates.

Ionospheric 14.5 Day Periodic Oscillation during the 2019 Antarctic SSW Event

The International Global Navigation Satellite Systems Service (IGS) ionospheric total electron content (TEC) data are used to study the periodic perturbation in the ionosphere during the 2019 Antarctic sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event, a rare Southern Hemisphere minor SSW event in the last 40 years. A 14.5 day periodic signal with a zonal wavenumber of 0 is observed in the mesosphere and the lower thermosphere (MLT) region and the ionosphere during this SSW period, which could be related to the lunar tide. The 14.5 day periodic disturbance in the IGS TEC exhibits local time dependence and latitudinal variation, with the maximum amplitude appearing between 1000 and 1600 LT in the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crest regions. Additionally, the 14.5 day periodic oscillation shows an obvious longitudinal variability, with the weakest amplitude appearing in the longitudinal region of 30° W–60° E.

Observations of Gravity Wave Refraction and Its Causes and Consequences

AbstractHorizontal gravity wave (GW) refraction was observed around the Andes and Drake Passage during the SouthTRAC campaign. GWs interact with the background wind through refraction and dissipation. This interaction helps to drive midatmospheric circulations and slows down the polar vortex by taking GW momentum flux (GWMF) from one location to another. The SouthTRAC campaign was composed to gain improved understanding of the propagation and dissipation of GWs. This study uses observational data from this campaign collected by the German High Altitude Long Range research aircraft on 12 September 2019. During the campaign a minor sudden stratospheric warming in the southern hemisphere occurred, which heavily influenced GW propagation and refraction and thus also the location and amount of GWMF deposition. Observations include measurements from below the aircraft by Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere and above the aircraft by Airborne Lidar for the Middle Atmosphere. Refraction is identified in two different GW packets as low as ≈4 km and as high as 58 km. One GW packet of orographic origin and one of nonorographic origin is used to investigate refraction. Observations are supplemented by the Gravity‐wave Regional Or Global Ray Tracer, a simplified mountain wave model, ERA5 data and high‐resolution (3 km) WRF data. Contrary to some previous studies we find that refraction makes a noteworthy contribution in the amount and the location of GWMF deposition. This case study highlights the importance of refraction and provides compelling arguments that models should account for this.

Observation of Scintillation Enhancements and Large‐Scale Structures Within the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly During a Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event

AbstractTotal electron content (TEC) and L‐band scintillations measured by several networks of GPS and GNSS receivers that operate in South and Central America and the Caribbean region are used to observe the morphology of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), examine the evolution of plasma bubbles, and investigate the enhancement of L‐band scintillations that occurred on February 12 and 13, 2016. A few weak and short magnetic storms developed these days, and a minor sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event was initiated a few days before. During these unusual conditions, TEC maps reported a split of the otherwise continuous crests of the EIA and the formation of a large‐scale (thousands of kilometers) almost‐circular structure. The western part of the southern crest faded, and a north‐south aligned segment developed near the center of the South American continent, joining the north and south crests of the EIA, forming an anomaly that resembled a closed loop on the eastern side of the continent. Concurrently with the anomaly events, several GPS stations reported increases in the L‐band scintillation index from 0.4 to values greater than 1. We analyzed TEC values from receivers between ±6° from the magnetic equator to identify and follow TEC depletions associated with plasma bubbles when they reach different stations. Although the magnetic activity was moderate (Kp = 3°), we believe that the anomaly redistribution and the scintillation enhancements are not related to a prompt penetration electric field but to enhancing the semidiurnal lunar tide propitiated by the onset of the minor SSW event. We found that depending on the lunar tide phase cycle, the neutral wind's meridional component can augment sub‐km scale irregularities and enhance L‐band scintillations through the wind gradient instability when U·n < 0 or the action of wind gradients (U) within the bubbles. Our observations imply that the SSW event enables prominent changes in the thermosphere wind system at F‐region altitudes.

A comprehensive investigation of Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events and upper atmospheric signatures associated with them

We present a study of the major and minor SSWs that have occurred in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) over the past four decades (1981–2020) from a statistical perspective. This study investigates the frequency and timing of occurrence of major and minor SSWs during the specified period. A correlation is observed between the timing of the earliest minor SSWs and final events, having different correlation coefficients in all four decades, with minimum correlation during the decade 2001–2010, including the extended solar minima. In the second part of our work, we examined SSW events of the last 18 winters based on ERA5 and MERRA2 reanalysis data. Surprisingly, the stratospheric parameters have been found to show different behaviors depending on the number of SSW events in a winter. The temperature and zonal mean zonal wind variations are stronger during winters with one major SSW, rather than winters having major SSW accompanied by minor SSWs. Finally, we conducted four case studies to investigate the atmospheric and ionospheric response to major and minor SSWs over three stations, namely Okinawa (26.21°N,127.68°E), Yamagawa (35.45°N,133.62°E), and Wakkanai (45.16°N,141.75°E). Like the stratospheric parameters, ionospheric parameters are not found to be much depended on the number of SSWs in a winter, but they are found to vary from event to event. Significant latitudinal variations in ionospheric parameters were observed in all the events, with more pronounced effects toward lower latitudinal station Okinawa. Although ionospheric disturbances are more pronounced during major SSWs, some severe minor events also have notable ionospheric impacts just as the major SSW.

Contributions of Early‐ and Middle‐Winter Perturbations at Higher Altitudes to Late‐Winter Anomalously Strong Arctic Polar Vortex in the Lower Stratosphere

AbstractBased on the Modern‐Era Retrospective analysis for Research Applications Version 2 reanalysis, an upper stratosphere/lower mesosphere (USLM) disturbance in early January and a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) in early February are both coincidentally captured preceding the anomalously strong polar vortex during the late boreal winters of 2010/2011 and 2019/2020. Our analysis indicates that planetary wave breaking during the USLM disturbance and SSW decelerates the westerly polar night jet (PNJ) in the upper stratosphere, which leads to a continuous downward and poleward propagation of the PNJ during the early and middle winter. As the peak height of the PNJ descends, the region with negative vertical wind shear and negative waveguides also extends downward and reaches an altitude of ∼40 km during the late winter, which significantly limits the upward propagation of planetary waves, inducing a stable polar vortex in the lower stratosphere. In addition, the transformed Eulerian mean diagnostic results based on the specified dynamics simulation of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model eXtended version confirm that the planetary wave‐induced downwelling is the main cause of the stratospheric warming during the two perturbations. More importantly, the simulation results indicate that the strength of the two upper stratospheric perturbations is appropriate to maintain the reflective configuration during the late winter, which suggests that such a specific sequence of perturbations during the early and middle winter, namely a USLM disturbance followed by a minor SSW, is favorable for the development of a late‐winter unusually strong Arctic polar vortex in the lower stratosphere.

Arctic Stratosphere Dynamical Processes in the Winter 2021–2022

The Arctic stratosphere winter season of 2021–2022 was characterized by a stable, cold stratospheric polar vortex with a volume of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) close to the maximum values since 1980, before the beginning of minor sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events in the late February and early March and major SSW on 20 March. Analysis of dynamical processes of the Arctic stratosphere using reanalysis data indicates that the main reasons for the strengthening of the stratospheric polar vortex in January–February are the minimum propagation of planetary wave activity from the troposphere to the stratosphere over the past 40 years and its reflection in the upper stratosphere–lower mesosphere in the second half of January. The first minor SSW was limited to the upper polar stratosphere, whereas the second one propagated to the middle and lower stratosphere and led to the disappearance of the PSC, which prevented significant ozone depletion. Both minor and major SSW events led to a weakening of the residual meridional circulation in the upper Arctic stratosphere and its intensification in the middle and lower stratosphere, which contributed to additional warming of the subpolar region and weakening of the polar vortex.

Anthropogenic Influence on the Antarctic Mesospheric Cooling Observed during the Southern Hemisphere Minor Sudden Stratospheric Warming

Processes behind Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW), which occurs more frequently in the northern hemispheric polar latitudes and its influence from the stratosphere to the upper atmosphere are well documented. However, physical processes associated with SSW, although it ensues rarely in the southern hemisphere (SH), have a strong influence on the background atmosphere from the stratosphere to the mesosphere and are poorly understood. Using a ground-based meteor radar, satellite-borne Microwave-Limb sounder, and Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications observations, we identified cooling of Antarctic mesopause by 26 K in response to a 66 K warming in the polar stratosphere during the 2019 minor SSW in the SH. The observed cooling is attributed to the interplay between planetary waves, CO2 infrared cooling, and O3 depletion, rather than adiabatic cooling due to gravity waves alone during SSW. It is proposed that anthropogenic and other sources generating chemical tracers in the lower atmosphere have caused mesospheric cooling and could be transported from the lower atmosphere both vertically and meridionally through residual mean meridional circulation from the tropics. Therefore, our study for the first time demonstrates the effect of lower atmosphere chemistry on the polar mesosphere thermal structure during the 2019 SSW.

Occurrence of Ionospheric irregularities over Brazil and Africa during the 2019 Antarctic minor sudden stratospheric warming

The influence of sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) on the ionosphere and ionospheric irregularities has been studied extensively over the years. However, majority of these investigations have been conducted using warming events originating from the northern hemisphere. Only a few studies have been done on ionospheric variations due to the Antarctic SSW events and to the best of our knowledge, there have not been any studies on southern hemisphere SSW and the occurrence of ionospheric irregularities. In this study, the occurrence of ionospheric irregularities during the 2019 minor Southern hemisphere (SH)/Antarctic SSW is investigated. The event occurs in a relatively calm solar and geomagnetic activity period which makes it possible to identify the effects of SSW on the occurrence of irregularities. Three ionosondes located in different latitudinal regions in Brazil as well as a network of ground-based GPS receiver stations located in both Brazil and Africa were used for this undertaking. Complimentary data from the same ionosonde stations using the same months from 2017 and 2018 were also used. On average more Spread-F was observed in 2019 than in 2017 or 2018 at all stations. ROT observations showed more occurrence in the Brazil sectors followed by West Africa and thenEast Africa. It was observed that the occurrence frequency decreased between 8% and 46 % from the pre-SSW phase to ascending/peak phases and from 2018 to 2019 for the peak phase.

Investigation on the MLT tidal variability during September 2019 minor sudden stratospheric warming

Tidal variability in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) during September 2019 Southern hemisphere minor sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is investigated utilizing ground-based meteor radar wind observations from the equatorial, extratropical, middle, and high latitude stations and global reanalysis dataset. The polar warming is found to move from the mesosphere to the stratosphere until the peak warming day (PWD) of the SSW. The diurnal and semidiurnal tides at individual observational sites do not exhibit any consistent response during the observational interval, but a notable and consistent variability in some specific zonal wavenumber components, i. e., DW1 (migrating diurnal tide), DE3 (nonmigrating eastward wavenumber 3 diurnal tide), and SW2 (migrating semidiurnal tide) is found in the global reanalysis dataset. Incidentally, the warming event occurs during Spring equinox when a dominant seasonal change in the tidal activities generally takes place and hence seasonal variability is also looked into while identifying the SSW impact during the observational interval. It is found that the seasonal broad changes in the DW1, DE3, and SW2 amplitudes can be explained by the variability in the tidal sources, i.e., water vapor, convective activity, ozone, etc during the observational period. However, the extracted short-term variability in the global tidal modes on removing seasonal trend reveals noticeable response in connection with the warming event. The deseasoned amplitude of the DW1 significantly enhances around the PWD at most of the present latitudes. The deseasoned DE3 amplitude responds significantly in the middle atmosphere at low latitudes during the warming phase. The deseasoned SW2 exhibit clear enhancement around the PWD at all the latitudes. However, the deseasoned tidal features do not seem to correlate well with that of the source species unlike the seasonal ones that imply involvement of complex processes during the warming event, seeking further future investigations in this regard.

Modulation of a long-lasting extreme cold event in Siberia by a minor sudden stratospheric warming and the dynamical mechanism involved

Previous studies have paid much attention to the impact of major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events on the tropospheric circulation. However, the attention to the modulation of minor SSW events on the extreme cold events is limited. In this study, the extreme cold event in Siberia in the winter of 2000/2001, the longest-lasting one from 1980/1981 to 2019/2020, and its linkages to the minor SSW event have been examined. Our results show that the largest cooling occurred in Siberia during 30 December 2000 − 10 January 2001, and then the cooling weakened and migrated to Northeast China from 11 to 18 January 2001. During the recovery stage of this minor SSW event, the stratospheric polar vortex gradually strengthened, along with strengthening of the zonal winds over the Ural region. The vertical distribution of positive zonal wind anomalies in the Ural region favored the reflection of stratospheric planetary wave in the Atlantic-Euro and Siberia region. The changes of planetary wave propagation were beneficial to the strengthening of the trough in the Atlantic-Euro and Siberia region during 26 December − 10 January, which facilitated the growth and maintenance of the Ural ridge in the same period by strengthening the meridional flow. The strengthened Ural ridge resulted in the extreme cold event breaking out and lasting from 30 December to 10 January. Because the stratospheric polar vortex did not continue to strengthen and a new ridge generated in the Atlantic region during 11 − 18 January, the Ural ridge decayed and the cold air moved to Northeast China.

Dynamical evolution of a minor sudden stratospheric warming in the Southern Hemisphere in 2019

Abstract. A major strong sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) occurred in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) stratosphere in 2002 (hereafter referred to as SSW2002), which is one of the most unusual winters in the SH. Following several warmings, the polar vortex broke down in midwinter. Eastward-traveling waves and their interaction with quasi-stationary planetary waves played an important role during this event. This study analyzed the Japanese 55-year reanalysis (JRA-55) dataset to examine the SSW event that occurred in the SH in 2019 (hereafter referred to as SSW2019). In 2019, a rapid temperature increase and decelerated westerly winds were observed at the polar cap, but since there was no reversal of westerly winds to easterly winds at 60∘ S in the middle to lower stratosphere, the SSW2019 was classified as a minor warming event. The results showed that quasi-stationary planetary waves of zonal wavenumber 1 developed during the SSW2019. The strong vertical component of the Eliassen–Palm flux with zonal wavenumber 1 is indicative of pronounced propagation of planetary waves to the stratosphere. The wave driving in September 2019 was larger than that of the major SSW event in 2002. Major SSWs tend to accompany preceding minor warmings, preconditioning, which changes the zonal flow that weaken the polar night jet as seen in SSW2002. A similar preconditioning was hardly observed in SSW2019. The strong wave driving in SSW2019 occurred in high latitudes. Waveguides (i.e., positive values of the refractive index squared) were found at high latitudes in the upper stratosphere during the warming period, which provided favorable conditions for quasi-stationary planetary waves to propagate upward and poleward.
