Libraries and Extension: Partnering to Expand Access Through Ebooks

Providing timely information—when and where people need it—has long been a goal of University of Minnesota Extension. This objective coincides with University of Minnesota Libraries' support of open access publishing and the use of Creative Commons to remove content from paywalls. Many libraries at land-grant institutions have developed their own publishing programs to support open scholarship, leveraging the depth of their expertise in research dissemination. This article highlights three examples of Extension ebooks published in partnership with the University of Minnesota Libraries.

What Do You Get When You Mix Libraries and Entrepreneurship? The Case of an Innovation Hub at a Large Research Library.

This article presents a case study of the University of Minnesota (UMN) Libraries collaboration with the UMN Carlson School of Management’s (CSOM) Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship (HCE) to create an innovation hub in our most heavily trafficked undergraduate library. During the same time that academic libraries have added makerspaces and have routinely invited partners into their buildings, entrepreneurship support has become a strategic priority for universities, business schools, and business libraries. The story of our innovation hub represents a confluence of these trends, and illustrates some of the challenges and benefits brought on by inviting a new kind of partner into the library space.

Transition Toward Closure: Recounting the Years 1966–1974 in the Life of the University of Minnesota Library School

ABSTRACT In 1983, during the early years of what later became known as a “rash” of library school closings, two members of the LIS professorate declared that library schools were in crisis, marked in part by an imminent closing of the University of Minnesota's Library School. They further claimed that Minnesota's departure created a fearful and worrisome atmosphere among LIS professionals and that other programs might be at risk. If such claims were true, what was it about the Minnesota experience that caused such concern? This article looks at a transitional period in the life of the University of Minnesota Library School and suggests that the lack of any succession planning and a poorly executed search for a new program director contributed to the school's problems. This faulty search and attendant transitions provided evidence of administrative and political weaknesses within the school that were later amplified and exploited by others.

CatDoc HackDoc: Tools and Processes for Managing Documentation Lifecycle, Workflows, and Accessibility

Documentation of local policies, workflows, and procedures is an important activity for cataloging and metadata units. But creating and maintaining documentation is a huge task that is not always a high priority. Librarians at the University of Minnesota Libraries planned a documentation hackathon, CatDoc HackDoc, with three primary goals: to update a large amount of documentation quickly, to apply accessibility best practices to all documentation, and to bring new staff into the documentation workflow. This article describes the event’s planning process, structure, and outcomes, and offers guidance on how others can adapt the CatDoc HackDoc model in their own organizations.

The Sexual Negotiation Space of Women in the Marital rape in Jember

This study focuses on sexual negotiations carried out by women because of the marital rape that their husbands did. Marital rape itself is a form of violence or forced sexual activity of a husband to his wife. Where, in this case, there are women's rights violated. It is based on the dichotomous ideal role of women and men in marriage, which is a manifestation of gender status that has implications for the division and subordination of sexuality to women. The researcher used the theory of feminist existentialism Simone de Beauvoir, to show the position of women as a socio-culture and sexually subordinated people and women's ability to demonstrate their existence through sexual negotiations in marriage. This study used qualitative feminist methods by using in-depth interviews with seven women who experienced problems with marital rape in their marriage. The results of this study are that sexual negotiation is created because of sexual injustice in the form of marital rape experienced by women in their marriages, where the sexual negotiation room is used by women to bargain with their husbands or even themselves. This process of negotiation shows that women can also fight or show their existence in marriage. It means that women do not have to sacrifice their marriage to be able to show their existence. Standardization and certification save us from the frustrations of the Greek drama

From the Chair

Although I have worked in libraries since I was in high school (which was much longer ago than I care to admit), I did not become a librarian until 2007. Why I chose to wait so long before going to library school is a story for another time. But there are some advantages to working as a student employee and then as a full-time paraprofessional in a large academic library—in my case, the University of Minnesota Libraries—before going to library school. One is that over the years I have done just about everything there is to do in a library. I have shelved books, worked in circulation, answered reference questions, done collection development, worked in technical services, shifted collections, done preservation work . . . the list goes on. As first a branch manager and now as a library administrator, the depth and breadth of my work experience in libraries has been invaluable; my work as a paraprofessional in particular has had a profound impact on how I approach librarianship in general.

Library, Library, Make Me a Match: Impact of Form-Based Readers’ Advisory on Academic Library Use and Student Leisure Reading

Staff from the Access and Information Services (AIS) department at the University of Minnesota Libraries developed several readers’ advisory services to promote student engagement. One project was a Book Matchmaking service, for which users completed a web form and were given reading suggestions owned by the libraries. A brief survey was distributed to users of the service during the fall of 2016 to assess impact. The resulting data made a strong argument for further readers’ advisory activities in academic libraries, as libraries and users benefit equally. Participating in the service encouraged positive engagement with the library and encouraged leisure reading.

Examining the Research Practices of Agricultural Scholars at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities

ABSTRACTDuring the spring and summer of 2016, the University of Minnesota Libraries joined 18 other institutions to participate in Ithaka S+R's Research Support Services Program to explore agricultural scholars' research focus, research methods, and publishing practices. This report summarizes our local findings, resulting from 16 interviews with University of Minnesota faculty from the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences on the Twin Cities campus. It also offers suggestions for agriculture libraries and librarians based on the data we have gathered.

Textbook access and affordability through academic library services: A department develops strategies to meet the needs of students

ABSTRACTIn the spring of 2015, the University of Minnesota Libraries formed the Content Services department, which is comprised of Interlibrary Loan, Publishing Services, and the Copyright Permissions Service. These three service points, as well as additional Library units, work together with campus partners to save students money on their course materials through a variety of programs and pilot projects. By employing multiple avenues to help faculty and students put affordable content into their existing workflows for providing and accessing required readings, the University of Minnesota Libraries are ensuring that there are many options available that support coursework and ultimately student success.

Academic Uses of Video Games: A Qualitative Assessment of Research and Teaching Needs at a Large Research University

Academic libraries develop collections and services for scholars who use video games in teaching and research. However, there are no assessments of related information and technology needs. The authors conducted 30 semistructured interviews to gather data about these needs and understand how the University of Minnesota Libraries can facilitate access to games and technology. A total of 28 interviewees used games in research, and 23 used games in teaching. We identified a variety of information and technology needs; many showed strong disciplinary trends. The findings can inform needs-based multidisciplinary strategies to develop video game services and collections relevant to unique academic communities.

Supporting Research Impact Metrics in Academic Libraries: A Case Study

Measuring research impact has become a nearly ubiquitous facet of scholarly communication. At the University of Minnesota Medical School, new administrative directives have directly tied impact metrics to faculty assessment, promotion, and tenure. In this paper, I describe a platform for the analysis and visualization of research impact that was developed in the University of Minnesota Libraries specifically to support these directives. The implementation of that platform, named Manifold, has required not only major technological resources but also new investments in user education. The libraries’ experience with Manifold offers a case study of the changing roles academic librarians increasingly face in managing expectations around research impact metrics.

A Long and Twisted Road: The Journey from EAD to ArchivesSpace Implementation at the University of Minnesota

ABSTRACTThis article will provide an overview of the implementation of EAD by the Archives and Special Collections Department, University of Minnesota Libraries, and the decision to implement ArchivesSpace, which necessitated addressing divergent and legacy practices. Some attention will be given to previous efforts to standardize description and accessibility at the University of Minnesota and how those efforts ultimately failed without a centralized content management system.

Saving students money with ebooks: A cross-departmental collaboration between interlibrary loan and course reserve

At the University of Minnesota Libraries, the interlibrary loan, acquisitions, and course reserve departments developed a new, data-driven project to provide students access to required course materials through patron-driven acquisition and cross-departmental collaboration. Item usage and student cost-savings data were collected throughout the project. During the spring 2015 semester, a survey was distributed to students across various disciplines affected by the project. Intended to measure the pilot project's success, the data and survey also yielded compelling evidence that academic libraries can best serve student needs by purchasing multiple user ebooks of required materials and promoting their availability.

Information management in the humanities: Scholarly processes, tools, and the construction of personal collections

The promise and challenge of information management in the humanities has garnered a great deal of attention and interest (Bulger et al., ; Freiman et al., ; Trace &amp; Karadkar, ; University of Minnesota Libraries, ; Wilson &amp; Patrick, ). Research libraries and archives, as well as groups from within the humanities disciplines themselves, are being tasked with providing robust support for information management practices, including helping to engage humanities scholars with appropriate digital technologies in ways that are sensitive to disciplinary‐based cultures and practices. However, significant barriers impede this work, primarily because the infrastructure (services, tools, and collaborative networks) to support scholarly information management is still under development. Under the aegis of the Scholars Tracking Archival Resources (STAR) project we are studying how humanities scholars gather and manage primary source materials with a goal of developing software to support their information management practices. This article reports the findings from our interviews with 26 humanities scholars, in conjunction with a set of initial requirements for a mobile application that will support scholars in capturing documents, recreating the archival context, and uploading these documents to cloud storage for access and sharing from other devices.
