Enhancing retrieval performance of embedding models via fine-tuning on synthetic data in RAG chatbot for Vietnamese military science domain

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is a technology that combines information retrieval with large language models, enabling chatbots to provide accurate answers by querying relevant documents from a data repository before generating responses. While RAG chatbot has demonstrated effectiveness in many applications, there are still limitations in specialized Vietnamese data domains, particularly in the military science field. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a framework for fine-tuning embedding models using synthetic datasets generated by ChatGPT to enhance retrieval performance in a Q&A application focused on the history of the Institute of Information Technology (IoIT). Our approach evaluates 11 popular embedding models and shows a significant average improvement of 18.15% in the MAP@K metric. The resulting IoIT history Q&A chatbot, developed with fine-tuned embedding models and the Vietnamese language model Vistral-7B, outperforms chatbots utilizing OpenAI's embedding models and ChatGPT. These findings highlight the potential of RAG chatbot technology for advancing information retrieval applications in specialized fields like military science.

Types of Intratextual Glosses in the Charter of Military, Cannon and Other Matters Relating to Military Science

Purpose. The aim of the article is to describe intratextual glosses in the Charter of Military, Cannon and Other Matters Relating to Military Science, the reasons for and ways of introducing them into the text.Results. Three sources of gloss were identified: the author of Kriegsbuch L. Fronsperger, the translators (A. Radishevsky, M. Yuryev and I. Fomin) and the publishers of the text. The glosses in the German text were formed using the conjunctions oder (in the Russian translation it corresponds to the conjunctions syrech and ili), das ist (in the Russian syrech and to yest’) and mainly served to explain the borrowed vocabulary from the Latin, in isolated cases from the Italian and the Greek. The publishers' glosses are a few bracketed inclusions, inside which an explanation is given for some obsolete nominations or variants of words. Approximately 50 glosses entered by translators explain spatial measurements, chemicals and materials, names of persons by occupation or duties, military affairs. Syntactically, they are more often formed using the conjunctions syrech and to yest’, rarely the conjunction ili.Conclusion. Fronsperger’s rare glosses were oriented to the German reader of the second half of the 16th century, who was well acquainted with military and scientific terminology, numerous translators' glosses – to the Russian reader of the early 17th century, who was not familiar with European scientific texts of the New Age, publishers' glosses – to the reader of the second half of the 18th century, who no longer knew some Russian words of the 17th century.

Methodological Approaches in Military Science Research

Scientific research is a prerequisite for progress in all areas of society, and military science is no exception. However, its specificities require careful analysis in order to identify specific methodological approaches to ensure the added value of the results obtained. Moreover, the need for continuous transformation and adaptation of military structures to the operating environment and to the specific characteristics of contemporary armed conflicts leads to an increased interest in identifying innovative solutions in this field. Academic research is the approach to provide feasible and viable solutions to these challenges. However, there are relatively few works that address the methodological peculiarities specific to the field of military science. For this reason, the present article analyses how to organize and conduct scientific studies in the military field, proposing a structured framework of methodological approach in 14 steps to ensure the logical coherence of the approach, while highlighting the specificities of the field under analysis.

Human Anthropometric Indicators for the Preparation of Simulation Models

Normal human anthropometric parameters are used in the development of medical rehabilitation techniques, in the performance of surgical techniques used for normal human functioning. In order to perform these operations successfully, it is necessary to model normal human physical characteristics and, based on these models, perform the operations correctly. Normal anatomical characteristics have a positive effect on the physiological state of the person. The relevance of the research stimulates the development of the science of valeology and increases the relevance and practical significance of the topic. Prosthetics of organs lost in wars and accidents are also performed on the basis of computer models. The science of digital anthropology is modeling human anthropometrics, and practically important predictions are being made based on this modeling. Digital anthropology is based on the research of modern technology to compile a database of the most diverse anthropological indicators of people. Anthropology occupies a special place in the system of scientific knowledge about the world, because it is a field of science that studies the origin, development and role of humans in nature and society. In modern medicine, mathematical and graphic modeling of human anatomical and anthropological indicators is required in all fields. Anthropometric indicators of humans are taken as the basis in surgery, military science, sports. The structure of shoulders, diaphragm, hips, face, and the age of a human being can also be defined by these anthropometric indicators.

The case study– a useful research strategy in the field of military sciences

This article argues for the usefulness of adopting the case study as an effective and sufficient strategy from the perspective of developing research papers in the field of Military Science. In the first stage, using Saunders’ model, I showed the logical course of a researcher’s reasoning up to the moment of establishing a suitable research strategy according to his object of study, the topic of interest or the problem formulated at the initiation of the scientific approach. Afterwards, I justified the motivation for choosing the case study as a research strategy, bringing to attention the main advantages and disadvantages that it entails. I thus had two objectives in writing this article: to emphasize the importance of clarifying and establishing certain research design, exemplified by going through the layers of Saunders’ model, and subsequently to highlight the versatility and flexibility of the case study as a research strategy, as it is accepted and used in all fields of scientific research.

Bloodless but deadly : Information warfare in Russian military science research

This report examines the terminology of Russian information warfare from the annexation of Crimea and the start of the war in Eastern Ukraine until 2023. The report is based on the analysis of articles on information warfare published between 2014 and 2023 in two of the most prominent Russian journals on military science, Vestnik Akademi Voennyh Nauk and Voennaya Mysl. The terminology is categorised in the report in line with the Russian Armed Forces Dictionary into information warfare objectives, resources and means. The terminology was found to be extensive and constantly evolving, providing the Russian government with political latitude, which it has made use of, for example, in Ukraine since spring 2022. The Russian perspective on information warfare is holistic, and several terms of Anglo-Saxon origin have been adopted to refer to centuries-old Russian warfare concepts. Information warfare is seen as part of a civilisational struggle between Russia and the collective West, which varies in intensity and manifestations. Russia makes no distinction between war and peace. After the war of aggression launched by Russia in 2022, a shift to a kind of post-truth era has emerged, where facts are of secondary importance and the focus is on elements related to an individual's information processing, emotions and decision-making, which are subject to the influence of information warfare. In this phase of information warfare, it is crucial to saturate the information space with content that serves Russia's strategic objectives in the long run. Wartime experience of visual impressions: K. A. Korovin and the problem of camouflaging positions at the front during World War I

During World War I the development of new methods for camouflaging the troops demanded the involvement of not only military professionals but also of the artists. Thus, a famous artist and Academician of Painting, Konstantin Alekseevich Korovin (1861–1939), cooperated with the paint-disguise and camouflage service established on the South-West Front on the initiative of brothers A. N. and N. N. Suchkov. The documents deposited at the Russian State Military Historical Archives reflect Korovinʼs interest in the problems of military camouflage, his trips to the front and his inventions. In the documents published here (the letters to the Suchkov brothers; a memorandum and an explanatory report to the chief of engineers of the armies of the South-West Front; instructions for the so-called “color finder” for determining the color of paint after drying) the artist outlined the problems of camouflage at the front, gave advice on the best ways of concealing positions (camouflaging trenches by paint spraying, setting up observation points that merge with the terrain, the use of camouflage nets). Korovin was aware of the innovations in camouflage in the armies of Russiaʼs allies, and urged to adopt the best of what they had. According to Korovin, the leadership of camouflage teams should be entrusted to competent officers familiar with the rules and specifics of perception of color combinations. The documents suggest that Korovin was one of the pioneers in the military science of camouflage in Russia.

This conference aims to serve as a platform for scientists to exchange and share the results of basic research and applications as well as cutting edge of knowledge and findings in the domain of environment, resources, and earth sciences. During the last three years, the series of ICERES conferences were held successfully which drawn much attention and attracted many scientists in the fields of Environment, Resources and Earth Sciences. This year, the ICERES 2023 elaborated with the theme of “Green and Nature-based Solutions for Environmental Sustainability and Resources Management” was held on 21 October 2023. Troops Management Systems And The Difference Of Cultures. Part Ii (Variants and Lessons of Russian, Soviet and Other Models for Us)

Due to the absence of domestic military science as a separate branch of science, the topic touched on by the USSR’s GS and management culture, the largest bearer of the German model after the FWW, remains an open topic. The Russian and especially the Soviet model was based on the Prussian model and even more today continues to bear the influence of the latter, but in a more refined form. The Russian army was one of the first in the world to follow Prussian innovations. The British model was and still is unacceptable to the Russian mentality and value system. The problem is that liberalism has always been punished in this country, serfdom is still very deep in public perception. It should also be noted that the influence of the Soviet model among the post-Soviet countries was quite large and is still large. But in the second decade of the 20th century, a number of post-Soviet countries began to abandon this model one after another. Although the Soviet model seems to be the main one among the CSTO countries, nevertheless, as a result of the reforms taking place in the Armenian Army after the 44- Day War of 2020, there are tendencies to abandon that model. The article is dedicated to a prominent military figure, a scientist, a future reformer of the armed forces of the Russian Empire, who laid the theoretical foundations of a new military science – military statistics. This science contained a variety of information about states, their territories, population, political structure, industrial potential and armed forces. According to the author of the fundamental two-volume work “First Attempts at Military Statistics” only a systemic and critical analysis of state armed forces could constitute the aim and subject of military statistics, its instruction in the Imperial Military Academy as only then Russian military higher educational establishment found in the first half of the 19th century. The work “First Attempts at Military Statistics” became one of the main research works at the Imperial Military Academy, a theoretical basis for the methodology of military statistical research. D. A. Miliutin made a significant contribution to the fourth edition of the seventeen-volume “Military Statistical Review of the Russian Empire” and “Yearbook of the Russian Army”, which had a significant impact on the formation of Russian military statistics and on the formation of Russian geostrategy.

Tourism Potential Development Strategy Using the Military Model To Improve Local Economic Development in Indonesia

Indonesia has an incredible diversity of natural resources and is one of the largest countries in the Asian region and even in the world. These natural resources can boost the local economy through tourism and various businesses. Therefore, to increase regional economic growth through the development of tourism potential, it is necessary to make careful plans and strategies. The purpose of this study is to determine methods that can be used to increase regional economic growth through the development of tourism potential. This study used a qualitative description approach. The goal is to provide an accurate picture of a particular characteristic, situation, symptom, or group of individuals, or to identify the frequency or distribution of symptoms. In military science, the strategic concept of "ends, ways, and means" developed by Arthur F. Lykke Jr. can be used to increase tourism potential. This concept explains that the existence of the tourism sector must include three objectives of this strategy: 1) Ends, which is a strategic concept centered on the ultimate goal of a tourism management strategy; 2) Means, which are methods or approaches used to achieve goals; and 3) Means, which is By implementing this idea, it is hoped that regional tourism growth can generate prosperity and economic independence, as well as a significant contribution to regional and national income.

On the nature of the early Medieval fortified settlements in the Trans-Urals

In this article we discuss the characteristics of the medieval fortifications of the forest-steppe population from the Tobol-Ishim interfluve region (Trans-Urals). We aim at determining the functions of fortified settlements of the 4th–9th c. AD Bakal Culture. The primary objective is to identify the main features of the defensive architecture, defence and storm of settlements based on archaeological material. Fortresses-hillforts predominated over other types of sites in the Bakal Culture. Only their residential areas have been studied extensively, and the fortification lines have been discovered in trenches due to the high complexity of their study. We have eight objects that have been identified, and the series have been selected for the first preliminary conclusions. Methods for determining the protection levels of fortifications in the light of expert assessment of the state of military science in the early Medieval period (4th–9th c. AD) have been proposed. They have been used taking into consideration the following features: height of the floodplain, height of the rampart, depth of the ditch, presence of ledges, towns and bas-tions, the ratio of the sizes of citadel and outer territory. Hillforts differ in the sum of points in average by three times. The indicators vary as follows: the height of the floodplain from 10 to 54 m, the height of the rampart from 1.5 to 4 m, the width of the rampart from 2 to 7 m, the depth of the ditch from 0.5 to 3 m, the ratio of the citadel to outer territory sizes from 1:1 to 1:9. These figures demonstrate the different functions of the fortifications, sugges-ting that some of the sites were border forts (Ust-Utyak-1 and Lastochkino Gnezdo-1), some were economic and political centres (Ust-Tersyukskoye), and others were shelters for smaller settlements (Kolovskoye, Krasnogor-skoye, Papskoye, Staro-Lybaevskoye, Bolshoye Bakalskoye). Improper carrying out of excavations at some of the sites may be the result of unfinished construction work.

A LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF CHINESE MILITARY TECHNICAL TERMS

The study of military technical terms is essential for understanding the evolution of military science and technology. Chinese military terminology has a long and complex history that reflects the development of Chinese military strategy, tactics, and technology. This article explores the historical evolution of Chinese military technical terms, tracing their origins, development, and impact on modern military lexicon. By examining ancient texts, historical records, and contemporary usage, this study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the linguistic and cultural significance of Chinese military technical terms.

Ultrawide Spectra Camouflage Coatings from Metallic Flake Powder.

Ultrawide-spectra-compatible camouflage materials are imperative for military science and national security due to the continuous advancement of various sophisticated multispectral detectors. However, ultrawide spectra camouflage still has challenges, as the spectral requirements for different bands are disparate and even conflicting. This work demonstrates an ultrawide spectra camouflage material compatible with visible (VIS, 400-800 nm), infrared (IR, 3-5 and 8-14 μm), and microwave (S-Ku bands, 2-12 GHz). The carbon nanotubes adsorbed on porous anodic alumina/aluminum flake powder (CNTs@PAA/AFP) material for ultrawide spectra camouflage is composed of bioinspired porous alumina surface layers for low visible reflection and aluminum flake powder substrate for low infrared emissivity, while the surface of the porous alumina layers is loaded with carbon nanotubes for microwave absorption. Compared with previous low-emissivity materials, CNTs@PAA/AFP has omnidirectional low reflectance (Ravg = 0.29) and high gray scale (72%) in the visible band. Further, it exhibits low emissivity (ε3-5μm = 0.15 and ε8-14μm = 0.18) in the dual infrared atmospheric window, which reduces the infrared lock-on range by 59.6%/49.8% in the mid/far-infrared band at high temperatures (573 K). The infrared camouflage performance calculated from the radiation temperature of CNTs@PAA/AFP coatings is enhanced to over 65%, which is at least 4 times greater than that of its substrate. In addition, the CNTs@PAA/AFP coating achieves high microwave absorption (RLmin = -42.46 dB) and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB = 7.43 GHz) in the microwave band (S-Ku bands) due to the enhancement of interfacial polarization and conductive losses. This study may introduce new insight and feasible methods for multispectral manipulation, electromagnetic signal processing, and thermal management via bioinspired structural design and fabrication.

Sociological analysis of military education in Kazakhstan

Relevance. High-quality military education, which guarantees the creation of effective armed forces capable of repelling threats to national security, is one of the main factors in determining the strength and influence of a state in the international arena. Purpose. The purpose of the study was to determine the features and specifics of military education in Kazakhstan by studying the activities of military educational institutions and departments in large cities of the country. Methodology. The study used system-analytical method, with the help of which it became possible to consider the basic characteristics of the military education system in Kazakhstan; and the historical method, facilitating the analysis of the process of training in military specialities over time. Results. The determining factors and prerequisites for the formation and development of the independent armed forces of the Republics of Kazakhstan were identified and the state's military education system was characterized at all levels, from school to postgraduate education and advanced training courses. Key points in the processes of transformation of state military education were identified, in particular regarding the reorganization of a number of higher military institutions and the creation of a state higher educational institution � National University of Defence of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan � Elbasy. The effectiveness of the military sector was measured using qualitative and quantitative indicators. Additionally, the main military specialities and faculties offered in higher educational institutions in major cities were listed. Conclusions. This study covered the main directions, issues, tasks, and methods of the educational process in Kazakh military universities. It also examined the development of military education in Turkey and Russia, identifying key factors affecting their educational systems. The findings and conclusions can serve as a practical foundation for enhancing national programs to train military specialists in Kazakhstan and other countries. Problematizing Narratives of Tragedy: Postwar Scientific Discourse in Tōho SFX Films

ABSTRACT Tōho SFX films (tokusatsu eiga), more popularly known as kaiju films, are a subgenre of Japanese films that flourished in the postwar era. Since many of the early films feature radioactive monsters, the genre is largely valued for reflecting the trauma and anxiety of nuclear bombs, testing, and effects of radiation in postwar society. Rather than focus on nuclear science, this study considers the continuation of scientific development from wartime to postwar by examining two neglected films that deal with the horrors of military science: Tōmei Ningen (Oda, 1954) and Densō Ningen (Fukuda, 1960). It argues that while the films reflect the social structures that saw the laundering of a more complicated scientific development that included wartime atrocities, they also offer instances of resistance to such prevailing ideologies. By moving away from a preoccupation with nuclear discourse and consequently from victimhood, this study aims to complicate the approach to Tōho SFX films as cultural responses to the trauma of the war experience.

This study examines Bang Jin(方震), who was an important helper of Yi Sun-shin(李舜臣) but is not well-known. Bang Jin had his family clan in Onyang Bang and was born in 1514. After growing up in Gyodong Island, he moved to Songsan and settled in Baekamri, Asan following his marriage to a daughter of Hong Yun-pil(洪胤弼). He served as Daejeong Hyeongam(大靜縣監) between 1535 and 1537. It seems that he entered the world of public offices through the Yu-il recommendation system(遺逸薦擧). Later, he passed the military service examination and was appointed as Boseong Gunsu(寶城郡守). His daughter married Yi Sun-Shin in 1565. It was Yi Jun-gyeong(李浚慶) that led a discussion leading to their marriage. He passed the Saengwon examination(生員試) of 1522 along with Bang Guk-hyeong(方國亨), the father of Bang Jin, and Yi Baek-rok(李百祿), the grandfather of Yi Sun-Shin. Bang Jin kept an eye on Yi Sun-Shin who moved from Hanseong and asked Yi Jun-gyeong, one of his father's Dongbangs(同榜), to arrange a match for his daughter. As a result, his daughter married Yi Sun-Shin. Yi Sun-Shin lived at the home of his wife's parents according to the custom of Seoryubuga marriage(婿留婦家婚) and converted his career path from civil service to military service after marriage. In addition to Bang Jin, Bang Woo-ju(方佑周), Bang Hee-min(方希閔), Bang Eung-won(方應元), and Hwang Se-deuk(黃世得) who passed the military service examination were all related to the clan of Onyang Bang. In this sense, the family of his wife had an absolute impact on the career path change of Yi Sun-Shin. Bang Jin, who passed the military service examination, taught books on military science to Yi Sun-Shin as well as martial arts. Moreover, he lavished his economic support on him. As a consequence, Yi Sun-Shin was able to grow into a commander in literary and martial arts and become the hero to led the people to overcome the national crisis during Imjin War.

Science fiction in military planning—Case allied command transformation and visions of warfare 2036

AbstractThis article focuses on using science fiction for military purposes to anticipate the future of warfare and presents a new tool for creating military science fiction. As technology is a significant driver in the future of warfare, science fiction has increased its popularity for military purposes. Armies and defense organizations have begun utilizing science fiction to anticipate and prepare for future wars. Examples can be found in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and NATO. Even though military sci‐fi is on the rise, there is a lack of a more profound analysis of the sci‐fi narratives of the military and its foundations. Allied Command Transformation's, (NATO's Strategic Warfare Development Command) report called Visions of Warfare 2036 (2016) exhibits an example of military‐based science fiction employed to anticipate and get prepared for the future of warfare. It includes 12 narratives of the future of warfare varying from gene‐manipulated soldiers to AI‐generated warfare. By analyzing the report qualitatively using the Atlas.ti program and manual methods, the basic elements of the stories were identified. One of the findings of the analysis was that the stories were somewhat similar to each other. To create more diverse military science fiction scenarios, a new tool: the Military Science Fiction Scenario Card was created. This tool can be used in practical work when thinking about the war of the future and in particular the role of technology in it. It can also be seen as a new tool in the field of futures research.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE CURRICULUM “FOREIGN LANGUAGE FOR PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES” IN THE CONTEXT OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME “STATE BORDER SECURITY” OF MASTER’S DEGREE

Peculiarities and objectives of the Educational programme “State Border Security” for the second (Master’s) level of higher education have been analysed. Theoretical content of the subject area, methods, techniques and technologies which include general and specific methods of military science, information and communication technologies and techniques, methods and techniques for ensuring the security of the state border have been studied. Tools and equipment, teaching and training consisting of problem-oriented and contextual learning, activity and competence-oriented technologies, practical performance of training and combat tasks, practical training and daily activities have been specified.Assessment that is divided into forms of control and assessment of educational achievements were investigated.We studied program competences (Integral competence, General competencies and Special (professional, subject) competencies) and Program learning outcomes. Educational programme components were specified, namely Curriculum “Foreign language for professional purposes” was described with the aim to show how students’ professional communicative competence in English, which involves the study of such aspects of language as speaking, reading, translating, listening and writing is forming.Content of the discipline, planned educational activities, forms (methods) of study were investigated, including Bloom’s taxonomy levels (knowledge, comprehending, application, analysis, synthesis and assessment).Five-stage lesson plan (introduction, input, practice, production and conclusion) and credit tasks were described.

Methodological principles of forming the "image of the enemy" in the minds of ukrainian servicemen during the russian-ukrainian war

The relevance of the study is due to the development of scientific and practical knowledge regarding the moral and psychological aspects of war, one of which is the sociopsychological phenomenon "the image of the enemy" as a component of the social consciousness of war participants. Its formation depends on the readiness of Ukrainian servicemen to destroy the enemy and the appropriate moral and psychological state in general to perform combat tasks. The purpose of the article is to determine the theoretical and methodological principles of identifying the formation of the "enemy image" in the minds of Ukrainian servicemen in the process of communication and its formation if necessary.In the research process, general scientific methods were used: analysis, synthesis, comparison, and generalization. And special methods: model of neurological levels of R. Dilts for determining markers in communication and logical levels of the formation of the "image of the enemy" in the minds of Ukrainian servicemen, as well as for the formation of the "image of the enemy" if necessary. The method of interpretation is used to reveal the meaning of the statements of military personnel. The interdisciplinary approach made it possible to combine the development of a few humanitarian sciences, namely: philosophies of war, social psychology, social communications, and neurolinguistic programming.The main results of the study consist in the identification of markers in communication and logical levels of formation of the "image of the enemy" in the minds of Ukrainian servicemen during the Russian-Ukrainian war. According to R. Dilts' pyramid of logical levels, which are manifested in communication at the following levels: environment, behavior, strategies, values, and identity. And at the mission level, the "image of the enemy" acquires its final formation and completion. In addition, a toolkit has been developed for officers in internal communication work to identify the logical levels of formation of the "image of the enemy" in the minds of servicemen and its correction or formation in the process of communication. The materials of the article are of practical value for the military administration that organizes and manages internal communication work in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and for officers who conduct it with their personnel. The theoretical significance of the conducted research lies in the expansion of the humanitarian discourse of military science based on an interdisciplinary approach, which made it possible to involve effective methods, principles, and approaches of other humanitarian sciences to solve the actual tasks of military science.
