Atmospheric Metallicity and C/O of HD 189733 b from High-resolution Spectroscopy

We present high-resolution K-band emission spectra of the quintessential hot Jupiter HD 189733 b from the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer. Using a Bayesian retrieval framework, we fit the dayside pressure–temperature profile, orbital kinematics, mass-mixing ratios of H2O, CO, CH4, NH3, HCN, and H2S, and the 13CO/12CO ratio. We measure mass fractions of and , and place upper limits on the remaining species. Notably, we find logCH4 < −4.5 at 99% confidence, despite its anticipated presence at the equilibrium temperature of HD 189733 b assuming local thermal equilibrium. We make a tentative (∼3σ) detection of 13CO, and the retrieved posteriors suggest a 12C/13C ratio similar to or substantially less than the local interstellar value. The possible 13C enrichment would be consistent with accretion of fractionated material in ices or in the protoplanetary disk midplane. The retrieved abundances correspond to a substantially substellar atmospheric C/O = 0.3 ± 0.1, while the carbon and oxygen abundances are stellar to slightly superstellar, consistent with core-accretion models which predict an inverse correlation between C/O and metallicity. The specific combination of low C/O and high metallicity suggests significant accretion of solid material may have occurred late in the formation process of HD 189733 b.

Gas phase ions in protoplanetary discs from collisions of solids

ABSTRACT Ionization is important for magnetohydrodynamics and chemistry in protoplanetary discs but known ionization sources are often weak along the mid-plane. We present, for the first time, data from a laboratory experiment, where we measure ions from colliding mm-basalt grains emitted into the surrounding gas phase. This positive detection implies that very basic collisions in early phases of planet formation are sources of ionization. The mid-plane of protoplanetary discs might be ionized despite the lack of intense radiation sources.

The impact of dust evolution on the dead zone outer edge in magnetized protoplanetary disks

Context. The dead zone outer edge corresponds to the transition from the magnetically dead to the magnetorotational instability (MRI) active regions in the outer protoplanetary disk midplane. It has been previously hypothesized to be a prime location for dust particle trapping. A more consistent approach to access such an idea has yet to be developed, since the interplay between dust evolution and MRI-driven accretion over millions of years has been poorly understood. Aims. We provide an important step toward a better understanding of the MRI–dust coevolution in protoplanetary disks. In this pilot study, we present a proof of concept that dust evolution ultimately plays a crucial role in the MRI activity. Methods. First, we study how a fixed power-law dust size distribution with varying parameters impacts the MRI activity, especially the steady-state MRI-driven accretion, by employing and improving our previous 1+1D MRI-driven turbulence model. Second, we relax the steady-state accretion assumption in this disk accretion model, and partially couple it to a dust evolution model in order to investigate how the evolution of dust (dynamics and grain growth processes combined) and MRI-driven accretion are intertwined on million-year timescales, from a more sophisticated modeling of the gas ionization degree. Results. Dust coagulation and settling lead to a higher gas ionization degree in the protoplanetary disk, resulting in stronger MRI-driven turbulence as well as a more compact dead zone. On the other hand, fragmentation has an opposite effect because it replenishes the disk in small dust particles which are very efficient at sweeping up free electrons and ions from the gas phase. Since the dust content of the disk decreases over millions of years of evolution due to radial drift, the MRI-driven turbulence overall becomes stronger and the dead zone more compact until the disk dust-gas mixture eventually behaves as a grain-free plasma. Furthermore, our results show that dust evolution alone does not lead to a complete reactivation of the dead zone. For typical T-Tauri stars, we find that the dead zone outer edge is expected to be located roughly between 10 au and 50 au during the disk lifetime for our choice of the magnetic field strength and configuration. Finally, the MRI activity evolution is expected to be crucially sensitive to the choice made for the minimum grain size of the dust distribution. Conclusions. The MRI activity evolution (hence the temporal evolution of the MRI-induced α parameter) is controlled by dust evolution and occurs on a timescale of local dust growth, as long as there are enough dust particles in the disk to dominate the recombination process for the ionization chemistry. Once that is no longer the case, the MRI activity evolution is expected to be controlled by gas evolution and occurs on a viscous evolution timescale.

Chemical evolution in planet-forming regions with growing grains

Context. Planets and their atmospheres are built from gas and solid material in protoplanetary disks. This solid material grows from smaller micron-sized grains to larger sizes in the disks during the process of planet formation. This solid growth may influence the efficiency of chemical reactions that take place on the surfaces of the grains and in turn affect the chemical evolution that the gas and solid material in the disk undergoes, with implications for the chemical composition of the planets. Aims. Our goal is to model the compositional evolution of volatile ices on grains of different sizes, assuming both time-dependent grain growth and several constant grain sizes. We also examine the dependence on the initial chemical composition. Methods. The custom Walsh chemical kinetics code was used to model the chemical evolution. This code was upgraded to account for the time-evolving sizes of solids. Chemical evolution was modelled locally at four different radii in a protoplanetary disk midplane (with associated midplane temperatures of 120, 57, 25, and 19.5 K) for up to 10 Myr. The evolution was modelled for five different constant grain sizes, and in one model, the grain size changed with time according to a grain-growth model appropriate for the disk midplane. Results. Local grain growth, with conservation of the total grain mass, and assuming spherical grains, acts to reduced the total grain-surface area that is available for ice-phase reactions. This reduces the efficiency of these reactions compared to a chemical scenario with a conventional grain-size choice of 0.1 μm. The chemical evolution modelled with grain growth leads to increased abundances of H2O ice. For carbon in the inner disk, grain growth causes CO gas to overtake CO2 ice as the dominant carrier, and in the outer disk, CH4 ice becomes the dominant carrier. Larger grain sizes cause less change the C/O ratio in the gas phase over time than when 0.1 μm sized grains are considered. Overall, a constant grain size adopted from a grain evolution model leads to an almost identical chemical evolution as a chemical evolution with evolving grain sizes. A constant grain size choice, albeit larger than 0.1 μm, may therefore be an appropriate simplification when modelling the impact of grain growth on chemical evolution.

A Highly Settled Disk around Oph163131

High dust density in the midplane of protoplanetary disks is favorable for efficient grain growth and can allow fast formation of planetesimals and planets, before disks dissipate. Vertical settling and dust trapping in pressure maxima are two mechanisms allowing dust to concentrate in geometrically thin and high-density regions. In this work, we aim to study these mechanisms in the highly inclined protoplanetary disk SSTC2D J163131.2-242627 (Oph 163131, i ∼ 84°). We present new high-angular-resolution continuum and 12CO ALMA observations of Oph 163131. The gas emission appears significantly more extended in the vertical and radial direction compared to the dust emission, consistent with vertical settling and possibly radial drift. In addition, the new continuum observations reveal two clear rings. The outer ring, located at ∼100 au, is well-resolved in the observations, allowing us to put stringent constraints on the vertical extent of millimeter dust particles. We model the disk using radiative transfer and find that the scale height of millimeter-sized grains is 0.5 au or less at 100 au from the central star. This value is about one order of magnitude smaller than the scale height of smaller micron-sized dust grains constrained by previous modeling, which implies that efficient settling of the large grains is occurring in the disk. When adopting a parametric dust settling prescription, we find that the observations are consistent with a turbulent viscosity coefficient of about α ≲ 10−5 at 100 au. Finally, we find that the thin dust scale height measured in Oph 163131 is favorable for planetary growth by pebble accretion: a 10 M E planet may grow within less than 10 Myr, even in orbits exceeding 50 au.

Self-scattering on large, porous grains in protoplanetary disks with dust settling

Context. Observations of protoplanetary disks in the sub-millimetre wavelength range suggest that polarisation is caused by scattering of thermal re-emission radiation. Most of the dust models that are used to explain these observations have major drawbacks: they either use much smaller grain sizes than expected from dust evolution models, or result in polarisation degrees that are lower than observed. Aims. We investigate the effect of dust grain porosity on the observable polarisation due to scattering at sub-millimetre wavelengths arising from grain size distributions up to millimetre sizes, as they are expected to be present close to the midplane of protoplanetary disks. Methods. Using the effective medium theory, we calculated the optical properties of porous dust and used them to predict the behaviour of the observable polarisation degree due to scattering. Subsequently, Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations for protoplanetary disks with porous dust grains were performed to analyse the additional effect of the optical depth structure, and thus the effect of multiple scattering events and inhomogeneous temperature distributions on the net observable polarisation degree. Results. We find that porous dust grains with moderate filling factors of about 10% increase the degree of polarisation compared to compact grains. For higher grain porosities, that is, grains with a filling factor of 1% or lower, the extinction opacity decreases, as does the optical depth of a disk with constant mass. Consequently, the unpolarised direct radiation dominates the scattered flux, and the degree of polarisation drops rapidly. Even though the simulated polarisation degree is higher than in the case of compact grains, it is still below the typical observed values for face-on disks. However, the polarisation degree can be increased when crucial model assumptions derived from disk and dust evolution theories, for instance, dust settling and millimetre-sized dust grains, are dropped. In the case of inclined disks, however, our reference model is able to achieve polarisation degrees of about 1%, and using higher disk masses, even higher than this.

Stratified and Vertically Shearing Streaming Instabilities in Protoplanetary Disks

Abstract Under the right conditions, the streaming instability between imperfectly coupled dust and gas is a powerful mechanism for planetesimal formation as it can concentrate dust grains to the point of gravitational collapse. In its simplest form, the streaming instability can be captured by analyzing the linear stability of unstratified disk models, which represent the midplane of protoplanetary disks. We extend such studies by carrying out vertically global linear stability analyses of dust layers in protoplanetary disks. We find that the dominant form of instability in stratified dust layers is the one driven by the vertical gradient in the rotation velocity of the dust−gas mixture, but also requires partial dust−gas coupling. These vertically shearing streaming instabilities grow on orbital timescales and occur on radial length scales ∼ 10−3 H g, where H g is the local pressure scale height. The classic streaming instability, associated with the relative radial drift between dust and gas, occurs on radial length scales ∼ 10−2 H g, but has much smaller growth rates than vertically shearing streaming instabilities. Including gas viscosity is strongly stabilizing and leads to vertically elongated disturbances. We briefly discuss the potential effects of vertically shearing streaming instabilities on planetesimal formation.

Cometary compositions compared with protoplanetary disk midplane chemical evolution

Context.Comets are planetesimals left over from the formation of planets in the solar system. With a growing number of observed molecular abundances in many comets, and an improved understanding of chemical evolution in protoplanetary disk midplanes, comparisons can be made between models and observations that could potentially constrain the formation histories of comets.Aims.Our aim is to carry out the first statistical comparison between cometary volatile ice abundances and modelled evolving abundances in a protoplanetary disk midplane.Methods.Aχ2-method was used to determine maximum likelihood surfaces for 14 different comets that formed at a given time (up to 8 Myr) and place (out to beyond the CO iceline) in the pre-solar nebula midplane. This was done using observed volatile abundances for the 14 comets and the evolution of volatile abundances from chemical modelling of disk midplanes. Two assumptions for the chemical modelling starting conditions (cloud inheritance or chemical reset), as well as two different sets of cometary molecules (parent species, with or without sulphur species) were investigated.Results.Considering all parent species (ten molecules) in the reset scenario,χ2likelihood surfaces show a characteristic trail in the parameter space with high likelihood of formation around 30 AU at early times and 12 AU at later times for ten comets. This trail roughly traces the vicinity of the CO iceline in time.Conclusions.A statistical comparison between observed and modelled chemical abundances in comets and comet-forming regions could be a powerful tool for constraining cometary formation histories. The formation histories for all comets were constrained to the vicinity of the CO iceline, assuming that the chemistry was partially reset early in the pre-solar nebula. This is found, both when considering carbon-, oxygen-, and sulphur-bearing molecules (ten in total), and when only considering carbon- and oxygen-bearing molecules (seven in total). Since these 14 comets did not previously fall into the same taxonomical categories together, this chemical constraint may be proposed as an alternative taxonomy for comets. Based on the most likely time for each of these comets to have formed during the disk chemical evolution, a formation time classification for the 14 comets is suggested.

Formation of cometary O2 ice and related ice species on grain surfaces in the midplane of the pre-solar nebula

Context. Detection of abundant O2 at 1–10% relative to H2O ice in the comae of comets 1P/Halley and 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has motivated attempts to explain the origin of the high O2 ice abundance. Recent chemical modelling of the outer, colder regions of a protoplanetary disk midplane has shown production of O2 ice at the same abundance as that measured in the comet. Aims. We aim to carry out a thorough investigation to constrain the conditions under which O2 ice could have been produced through kinetic chemistry in the pre-solar nebula midplane. Methods. We have utilised an updated chemical kinetics code to evolve chemistry under pre-solar nebula midplane conditions. Four different chemical starting conditions and the effects of various chemical parameters have been tested. Results. Using the fiducial network, and for either reset conditions (atomic initial abundances) or atomic oxygen only conditions, the abundance level of O2 ice measured in the comets can be reproduced at an intermediate time, after 0.1–2 Myr of evolution, depending on ionisation level. When including O3 chemistry, the abundance of O2 ice is much lower than the cometary abundance (by several orders of magnitude). We find that H2O2 and O3 ices are abundantly produced (at around the level of O2 ice) in disagreement with their respective abundances or upper limits from observations of comet 67P. Upon closer investigation of the parameter space, and varying parameters for grain–surface chemistry, it is found that for temperatures 15–25 K, densities of 109−1010 cm−3, and a barrier for quantum tunnelling set to 2 Å, the measured level of O2 ice can be reproduced with the new chemical network, including an updated binding energy for atomic oxygen (1660 K). However, the abundances of H2O2 and O3 ices still disagree with the observations. A larger activation energy for the O + O2 → O3 reaction (Eact &gt; 1000 K) helps to reproduce the non-detection of O3 ice in the comet, as well as reproducing the observed abundances of H2O2 and O2 ices. The only other case in which the O2 ice matches the observed abundance, and O3 and H2O2 ice are lower, is the case when starting with an appreciable amount of oxygen locked in O2. Conclusions. The parameter space investigation revealed a sweet spot for production of O2 ice at an abundance matching those in 67P and 1P, and O3 and H2O2 ice abundances matching those in 67P. This means that there is a radial region in the pre-solar nebula from 120–150 AU, within which O2 could have been produced in situ via ice chemistry on grain surfaces. However, it is apparent that there is a high degree of sensitivity of the chemistry to the assumed chemical parameters (e.g. binding energy, activation barrier width, and quantum tunnelling barrier). Hence, because the more likely scenario starting with a percentage of elemental oxygen locked in O2 also reproduces the O2 ice abundance in 67P at early stages, this supports previous suggestions that the cometary O2 ice could have a primordial origin.

CO destruction in protoplanetary disk midplanes: Inside versus outside the CO snow surface

Context. The total gas mass is one of the most fundamental properties of disks around young stars, because it controls their evolution and their potential to form planets. To measure disk gas masses, CO has long been thought to be the best tracer as it is readily detected at (sub)mm wavelengths in many disks. However, inferred gas masses from CO in recent ALMA observations of large samples of disks in the 1–5 Myr age range seem inconsistent with their inferred dust masses. The derived gas-to-dust mass ratios from CO are between one and two orders of magnitude lower than the ISM value of ~100 even if photodissociation and freeze-out are included. In contrast, Herschel measurements of hydrogen deuteride line emission of a few disks imply gas masses in line with gas-to-dust mass ratios of 100. This suggests that at least one additional mechanism is removing CO from the gas phase. Aims. Here we test the suggestion that the bulk of the CO is chemically processed and that the carbon is sequestered into less volatile species such as CO2, CH3OH, and CH4 in the dense, shielded midplane regions of the disk. This study therefore also addresses the carbon reservoir of the material which ultimately becomes incorporated into planetesimals. Methods. Using our gas-grain chemical code, we performed a parameter exploration and follow the CO abundance evolution over a range of conditions representative of shielded disk midplanes. Results. Consistent with previous studies, we find that no chemical processing of CO takes place on 1–3 Myr timescales for low cosmic-ray ionisation rates, &lt;5 × 10−18 s−1. Assuming an ionisation rate of 10−17 s−1, more than 90% of the CO is converted into other species, but only in the cold parts of the disk below 30 K. This order of magnitude destruction of CO is robust against the choice of grain-surface reaction rate parameters, such as the tunnelling efficiency and diffusion barrier height, for temperatures between 20 and 30 K. Below 20 K there is a strong dependence on the assumed efficiency of H tunnelling. Conclusions. The low temperatures needed for CO chemical processing indicate that the exact disk temperature structure is important, with warm disks around luminous Herbig stars expected to have little to no CO conversion. In contrast, for cold disks around sun-like T Tauri stars, a large fraction of the emitting CO layer is affected unless the disks are young (&lt;1 Myr). This can lead to inferred gas masses that are up to two orders of magnitude lower. Moreover, unless CO is locked up early in large grains, the volatile carbon composition of the icy pebbles and planetesimals forming in the midplane and drifting to the inner disk will be dominated by CH3OH, CO2 and/or hydrocarbons.

Molecular abundances and C/O ratios in chemically evolving planet-forming disk midplanes

Context. Exoplanet atmospheres are thought be built up from accretion of gas as well as pebbles and planetesimals in the midplanes of planet-forming disks. The chemical composition of this material is usually assumed to be unchanged during the disk lifetime. However, chemistry can alter the relative abundances of molecules in this planet-building material. Aims. We aim to assess the impact of disk chemistry during the era of planet formation. This is done by investigating the chemical changes to volatile gases and ices in a protoplanetary disk midplane out to 30 AU for up to 7 Myr, considering a variety of different conditions, including a physical midplane structure that is evolving in time, and also considering two disks with different masses. Methods. An extensive kinetic chemistry gas-grain reaction network was utilised to evolve the abundances of chemical species over time. Two disk midplane ionisation levels (low and high) were explored, as well as two different makeups of the initial abundances (“inheritance” or “reset”). Results. Given a high level of ionisation, chemical evolution in protoplanetary disk midplanes becomes significant after a few times 105 yr, and is still ongoing by 7 Myr between the H2O and the O2 icelines. Inside the H2O iceline, and in the outer, colder regions of the disk midplane outside the O2 iceline, the relative abundances of the species reach (close to) steady state by 7 Myr. Importantly, the changes in the abundances of the major elemental carbon and oxygen-bearing molecules imply that the traditional “stepfunction” for the C/O ratios in gas and ice in the disk midplane (as defined by sharp changes at icelines of H2O, CO2 and CO) evolves over time, and cannot be assumed fixed, with the C/O ratio in the gas even becoming smaller than the C/O ratio in the ice. In addition, at lower temperatures (&lt;29 K), gaseous CO colliding with the grains gets converted into CO2 and other more complex ices, lowering the CO gas abundance between the O2 and CO thermal icelines. This effect can mimic a CO iceline at a higher temperature than suggested by its binding energy. Conclusions. Chemistry in the disk midplane is ionisation-driven, and evolves over time. This affects which molecules go into forming planets and their atmospheres. In order to reliably predict the atmospheric compositions of forming planets, as well as to relate observed atmospheric C/O ratios of exoplanets to where and how the atmospheres have formed in a disk midplane, chemical evolution needs to be considered and implemented into planet formation models.

Methanol Formation via Oxygen Insertion Chemistry in Ices

Abstract We present experimental constraints on the insertion of oxygen atoms into methane to form methanol in astrophysical ice analogs. In gas-phase and theoretical studies this process has previously been demonstrated to have a very low or nonexistent energy barrier, but the energetics and mechanisms have not yet been characterized in the solid state. We use a deuterium UV lamp filtered by a sapphire window to selectively dissociate O2 within a mixture of O2:CH4 and observe efficient production of CH3OH via O(1D) insertion. CH3OH growth curves are fit with a kinetic model, and we observe no temperature dependence of the reaction rate constant at temperatures below the oxygen desorption temperature of 25 K. Through an analysis of side products we determine the branching ratio of ice-phase oxygen insertion into CH4: ∼65% of insertions lead to CH3OH, with the remainder leading instead to H2CO formation. There is no evidence for CH3 or OH radical formation, indicating that the fragmentation is not an important channel and that insertions typically lead to increased chemical complexity. CH3OH formation from O2 and CH4 diluted in a CO-dominated ice similarly shows no temperature dependence, consistent with expectations that insertion proceeds with a small or nonexistent barrier. Oxygen insertion chemistry in ices should therefore be efficient under low-temperature ISM-like conditions and could provide an important channel to complex organic molecule formation on grain surfaces in cold interstellar regions such as cloud cores and protoplanetary disk midplanes.

Setting the volatile composition of (exo)planet-building material

[Abridged] Chemical evolution in the protoplanetary disk midplane can modify the composition of ices and gases. We have investigated if and how chemical evolution affects the abundances and distributions of key volatile species in the midplane of a protoplanetary disk in the 0.2-30 AU range. A full chemical network including gas-phase, gas-grain interactions and grain-surface chemistry is used to evolve chemistry in time, for 1 Myr. Great diversity is observed in the relative abundance ratios of the main considered species: H2O, CO, CO2, CH4, O2, NH3 and N2. The choice of ionisation level, the choice of initial abundances, as well as the extent of chemical reaction types included are all factors that affect the chemical evolution. The only exception is the inheritance scenario with a low ionisation level, which results in negligible changes compared with the initial abundances, regardless of whether grain-surface chemistry is included. The chemical processing changes the C/O ratios for gas and ice significantly with radius and with model assumptions. For high ionisation levels, chemical processing becomes significant after a few times $10^{5}$~yrs. It is concluded that chemical evolution in the disk midplane needs to be considered in the determination of the volatile composition of planetesimals.

Cosmic Rays and the Origin of Volatiles in Protoplanetary Disks

AbstractThe origin of water and other volatiles in protoplanetary disks can be either interstellar or due to chemical processing during the protoplanetary disk phase. Depending on the strength of the ionization field present during this stage, an active chemical evolution in the protoplanetary disk midplane can lead to formation of complex volatiles on timescales shorter than the disk dissipation timescale. For this reason, we investigate the effects of cosmic rays and the usually neglected cosmic ray induced UV ionization field in time dependent chemical models of protoplanetary disks. These results are benchmarked against our current knowledge of the chemical composition of cometary ices. We conclude that water and other, more complex volatiles can be preserved in the ice mantles of dust grains. This ice mantle growth can also have a significant impact on the dust opacity and hence on the temperature profile of the disk midplane. This effect will be observable in the near future with ALMA.

THE D/H RATIO OF WATER ICE AT LOW TEMPERATURES

We present the modeling results of deuterium fractionation of water ice, H2, and the primary deuterium isotopologues of H3+ adopting physical conditions associated with the star and planet formation process. We calculated the deuterium chemistry for a range of gas temperatures (T_gas ~ 10 - 30 K), molecular hydrogen density (n(H2)~ 10^4 - 10^7), and ortho/para ratio (opr) of H2 based on state-to-state reaction rates and explore the resulting fractionation including the formation of a water ice mantle coating grain surfaces. We find that the deuterium fractionation exhibits the expected temperature dependence of large enrichments at low gas temperature. More significantly the inclusion of water ice formation leads to large D/H ratios in water ice (>= 10^-2 at 10 K) but also alters the overall deuterium chemistry. For T < 20 K the implantation of deuterium into ices lowers the overall abundance of HD which reduces the efficiency of deuterium fractionation at high density. In agreement with an earlier study, under these conditions HD may not be the primary deuterium reservoir in the cold dense interstellar medium and H3+ will be the main charge carrier in the dense centers of pre-stellar cores and the protoplanetary disk midplane.

The role of OH in the chemical evolution of protoplanetary disks

Context. We present a method for including gas extinction of cosmic-ray-generated UV photons in chemical models of the midplane of protoplanetary disks, focusing on its implications on ice formation and chemical evolution. Aims. Our goal is to improve on chemical models by treating cosmic rays, the main source of ionization in the midplane of the disk, in a way that is consistent with current knowledge of the gas and grain environment present in those regions. We trace the effects of cosmic rays by identifying the main chemical reaction channels and also the main contributors to the gas opacity to cosmic-ray-induced UV photons. This information is crucial in implementing gas opacities for cosmic-ray-induced reactions in full 2D protoplanetary disk models. Methods. We considered time-dependent chemical models within the range 1-10 AU in the midplane of a T Tauri disk. The extinction of cosmic-ray-induced UV photons by gaseous species was included in the calculation of photorates at each timestep. We integrated the ionization and dissociation cross sections of all atoms/molecules over the cosmic-ray-induced UV emission spectrum of H_2. By analyzing the relative contribution of each gas phase species over time, we were able to identify the main contributors to the gas opacity in the midplane of protoplanetary disks. Results. At 1 AU the gas opacity contributes up to 28.2% of the total opacity, including the dust contribution. At 3-5 AU the gas contribution is 14.5% of the total opacity, and at 7-8 AU it reaches a value of 12.2%. As expected, at 10-15 AU freeze-out of species causes the gas contribution to the total opacity to be very low (6%). The main contributors to the gas opacity are CO, CO_2, S, SiO, and O_2. OH also contributes to the gas opacity, but only at 10-15 AU.

Equilibrium condensation from chondritic porous IDP enriched vapor: Implications for Mercury and enstatite chondrite origins

The origin of Mercury's anomalous core and low FeO surface mineralogy are outstanding questions in planetary science. Mercury's composition may result from cosmochemical controls on the precursor solids that accreted to form Mercury. High temperatures and enrichment in solid condensates are likely conditions near the midplane of the inner solar protoplanetary disk. Silicate liquids similar to the liquids quenched in ferromagnesian chondrules are thermodynamically stable in oxygen-rich systems that are highly enriched in dust of CI-chondrite composition. In contrast, the solids surviving into the orbit of Mercury's accretion zone were probably similar to highly unequilibrated, anhydrous, interstellar organic- and presolar grain-bearing chondritic, porous interplanetary dust particles (C-IDPs). Chemical systems enriched in an assumed C-IDP composition dust produce condensates (solid+liquid assemblages in equilibrium with vapor) with super-chondritic atomic Fe/Si ratios at high temperatures, approaching 50% of that estimated for bulk Mercury. Sulfur behaves as a refractory element, but at lower temperatures, in these chemical systems. Stable minerals are FeO-poor, and include CaS and MgS, species found in enstatite chondrites. Disk gradients in volatile compositions of planetary and asteroidal precursors can explain Mercury's anomalous composition, as well as enstatite chondrite and aubrite parent body compositions. This model predicts high sulfur content, and very low FeO content of Mercury's surface rocks.

THE EFFECT OF THE RADIAL PRESSURE GRADIENT IN PROTOPLANETARY DISKS ON PLANETESIMAL FORMATION

The streaming instability (SI) provides a promising mechanism for planetesimal formation because of its ability to concentrate solids into dense clumps. The degree of clumping strongly depends on the height-integrated solid to gas mass ratio Z in protoplanetary disks (PPDs). In this letter, we show that the magnitude of the radial pressure gradient (RPG) which drives the SI (characterized by $q\equiv{\eta}v_K/c_s$, where ${\eta}v_K$ is the reduction of Keplerian velocity due to the RPG and $c_s$ is the sound speed) also strongly affects clumping. We present local two-dimensional hybrid numerical simulations of aerodynamically coupled particles and gas in the midplane of PPDs. Magnetic fields and particle self-gravity are ignored. We explore three different RPG values appropriate for typical PPDs: $q=0.025, 0.05$ and 0.1. For each $q$ value, we consider four different particle size distributions ranging from sub millimeter to meter sizes and run simulations with solid abundance from Z=0.01 up to Z=0.07. We find that a small RPG strongly promotes particle clumping in that: 1) At fixed particle size distribution, the critical solid abundance $Z_{\rm crit}$ above which particle clumping occurs monotonically increases with $q$; 2) At fixed Z, strong clumping can occur for smaller particles when $q$ is smaller. Therefore, we expect planetesimals to form preferentially in regions of PPDs with a small RPG.

DYNAMICS OF SOLIDS IN THE MIDPLANE OF PROTOPLANETARY DISKS: IMPLICATIONS FOR PLANETESIMAL FORMATION

(Abridged) We present local 2D and 3D hybrid numerical simulations of particles and gas in the midplane of protoplanetary disks (PPDs) using the Athena code. The particles are coupled to gas aerodynamically, with particle-to-gas feedback included. Magnetorotational turbulence is ignored as an approximation for the dead zone of PPDs, and we ignore particle self-gravity to study the precursor of planetesimal formation. Our simulations include a wide size distribution of particles, ranging from strongly coupled particles with dimensionless stopping time tau_s=Omega t_stop=1e-4 to marginally coupled ones with tau_s=1 (where Omega is the orbital frequency, t_stop is the particle friction time), and a wide range of solid abundances. Our main results are: 1. Particles with tau_s>=0.01 actively participate in the streaming instability, generate turbulence and maintain the height of the particle layer before Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is triggered. 2. Strong particle clumping as a consequence of the streaming instability occurs when a substantial fraction of the solids are large (tau_s>=0.01) and when height-integrated solid to gas mass ratio Z is super-solar. 3. The radial drift velocity is reduced relative to the conventional Nakagawa-Sekiya-Hayashi (NSH) model, especially at high Z. We derive a generalized NSH equilibrium solution for multiple particle species which fits our results very well. 4. Collision velocity between particles with tau_s>=0.01 is dominated by differential radial drift, and is strongly reduced at larger Z. 5. There exist two positive feedback loops with respect to the enrichment of local disk solid abundance and grain growth. All these effects promote planetesimal formation.

H2D+ line emission in Proto-Planetary Disks

Context. Previous studies have indicated that the 372.4 GHz ground transition of ortho-H 2 D + might be a powerful probe of Proto-Planetary Disks. The line could be especially suited for study of the disk mid-plane, where the bulk of the mass resides and where planet formation takes place. Aims. Provide detailed theoretical predictions for the line intensity, profile and maps expected for representative disk models. Methods. We determine the physical and chemical structure of the disks from the model developed by Ceccarelli & Dominik (2005, A&A, 440, 583). The line emission is computed with the new radiative transfer method developed recently by Elitzur & Asensio Ramos (2006, MNRAS, 365, 779). Results. We present intensity maps convolved with the expected ALMA resolution, which delineate the origin of the H 2 D + 372.4 GHz line. In the disk inner regions, the line probes the conditions in the mid-plane out to radial distances of a few tens of AU, where Solar-like planetary systems might form. In the disk outermost regions, the line originates from slightly above the mid-plane. When the disk is spatially resolved, the variation of line profile across the image provides important information about the velocity field. Spectral profiles of the entire disk flux show a double peak shape at most inclination angles. Conclusions. Our study confirms that the 372.4 GHz H 2 D + line provides powerful diagnostics of the mid-plane of Proto-Planetary Disks. Current submillimeter telescopes are capable of observing this line, though with some difficulties. The future ALMA interferometer will have the sensitivity to observe and even spatially resolve the H 2 D + line emission.
